  4. When we first set out to build Citadel: Forged With Fire over four years ago, we had two clear goals in mind: Create the ultimate fantasy sandbox game Make the world online with players from around the world Today, I think we have accomplished those goals and I couldn’t be more excited to show you what this game is all about. The list of things you can do as a newly minted Wizard in Citadel: Forged With Fire is absolutely enormous, but there are a couple features I wanted to talk about today: Castle Building and Dragons. In Citadel, players are given a massive world full of resources to explore and conquer. One of the first things you’ll want to do is find a safe plot of land to build a shelter. Harvest more resources and you can transform that basic shelter into a magical home. Want to go one step further? Keep going and you can build yourself a proper castle. We have given players have a wide array of tools at their disposal, all rooted in magic. You can build anything you like in our grid-based construction system that is as easy to use as it is flexible. We have seen some really crazy designs over the years, and can’t wait to see what designs you come up with. Be sure to fortify your castle with defenses, traps and hidden passageways, and don’t forget to claim ownership by placing down your throne! Aside from building castles, the next thing I wanted to show you about Citadel is our dragons. We’ve got a lot of fantastical creatures to interact with, but my personal favorite thing to do is fly around on the back of a dragon. Taming a dragon isn’t easy but if you can pull it off, it is one of the coolest parts of the game. First, I’d recommend using a spell imbued with a Frozen Essence – hit a dragon with one of those spells to slow it down. Next, use your Pacify spell to tame the dragon. Once you have taken control your dragon, make sure to give it a name and equip it with a saddle. The only thing left to do is jump on board, fly high into the sky and pilot your dragon across the land, raining fire down on your enemies below. There’s nothing more intimidating than flying up to someone else’s castle on the back of your trusty dragon, ready to open fire. Better yet, team up with friends online and fly your dragons together, side by side. This is just a taste of what you can do in Citadel and I can’t wait to see what kind of castles you build (and destroy!). See you in the game. View the full article

We’ll keep the polls open throughout this weekend, so make sure you get those votes in before Sunday at 11:59pm Pacific. Two months to go… any predictions for November and December? How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year. What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. 6. Shenmue III releases on PS4 on November 19 — that’s less than three weeks! — continuing the story of one of gaming’s most influential series. We had a chance to speak with Yu Suzuki, the legendary designer whose name is attached to dozens of titles including Virtua Fighter, Out Run, Daytona USA, and After Burner — and who more recently (relatively speaking) directed the original Shenmue, its 2001 sequel, and now Shenmue III. Read on to learn about Suzuki san’s plans for the Shenmue series, the projects he’s most proud of, and what he really thinks of forklifts. PlayStation.Blog: Can you tell us about how you got your start in games, and how that led to the development of the original Shenmue? Yu Suzuki: At first, I was aiming for a job as a system engineer of large computer system at the time and had some interviews, but I also took one interview for a video game company—that company happened to be SEGA. As the interviewer was intriguing, I decided to choose SEGA. My earlier works focused almost exclusively on arcade games where gameplay time is rather short, and the impetus came when I found myself wanting to do a home console RPG where I could take the proper time to get messages across. PSB: Is Shenmue III planned as the final game in the series, or have you explored the idea of continuing Ryo’s story in the future? YS: The series will not end with Shenmue 3. Rushing to tie up the plot here would have made for a flat game. And I hope to continue the series as long as people are interested. PSB: Revisiting PlayStation’s 2015 E3 press conference announcement, it’s still emotional watching videos of fans’ reactions to the announcement of Shenmue III. Looking back four years later, what kind of effect did that outpouring of fan support have on you, or on the development of the game? YS: I made the game with that image of joyful fans always in mind, and it made Shenmue III grew in scale and quality. I feel confident that we made an even better Shenmue game. PSB: You’ve been directly involved in some of the most influential games of all time over the past 35 years, including Outrun, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, and, of course, Shenmue — among many, many others. Looking back, what are some of the projects you’ve worked on that you’re most proud of? YS: That would be the Virtua Fighter and Shenmue series. And I really hope that now with Shenmue III, it will again find a place in the hearts of everyone who plays it. PSB: Are there any secrets you hid in any of your past games that remain undiscovered? YS: Yes, there are. (But they remain secrets.) PSB: Having been such a prominent figure in the gaming industry since its inception, are there any trends or technology you’ve seen develop that you’re particularly curious about or interested in? YS: Brainwave sensors, holography, AI, automobiles and foldable screen devices would be a few. PSB: What is the emotion you hope players feel immediately after finishing Shenmue III? Do you think most players will have a similar reaction to it? YS: It would be nice if players felt like coming back from a journey. If you hurry through the game, there is a good chance it will just stress you out. Rather, by taking your time, the experience will be one of trying all the different things the game has to offer. PSB: The original Shenmue was seen as an advancement both in terms of technology and storytelling. Did you approach that game’s development from the technological or narrative side first? What about with Shenmue III? YS: Many of the times you want to do something new, it necessitates new technology and taking on new challenges. With Shenmue III, there were again new challenges we took on. PSB: What’s something you think Shenmue has contributed to the overall DNA of the gaming industry, be it a specific mechanic, a way of telling a story, including arcade-faithful ports of retro classics, or something else entirely? YS: After Shenmue I & II, the word “open world” came about. In that one world, there were lots of different game elements you could have fun with. Many people have said that kind of style had a big impact on games to come, and for that I feel highly honored. PSB: How has the combat system of Shenmue III evolved since you first began the project? YS: To make the combat system of Shenmue III fit as an RPG game, we needed to make the battle engine from scratch. The system is designed so that even if you are someone who is not necessarily good at fighting games, by raising your level you can be confident that you can move the story along. People who are used to the VF2 engine, for example, may not feel enough, but this is how I feel it should be evolving in Shenmue. PSB: Has your perspective on forklifts changed at all in the past 20 years? YS: Why does the forklift get singled out for so much love and attention? That fact is still beyond me. (laughs) PSB: Can you tell us about the development of the soundtrack for Shenmue III? Did you follow a similar process to that which you did for previous games in the series? YS: This time around it may seem like there are not so many new songs, but we did add a lot of new ones. I hope everyone looks forward to them. PSB: What’s an example of a small detail in Shenmue III that you think will enhance players’ experience with the game? YS: I would ask everyone to take your time to play and not hurry through. When you come upon something you like, just stop and hang out for as long as you like, trying all things the game has to offer. For example, if you’re someone who doesn’t like gambling, try it in Shenmue and you may just have fun. View the full article

  8. Greetings, PlayStation Slayers! Today I’m here to tell you about our latest free seasonal content update for Dauntless, which goes live today on PS4. If you’ve taken a look around Ramsgate in the past week, you’ve likely noticed that the Dark Harvest has transformed the city into a shadow-laden bastion for the Unseen. This ominous cult tends to arrive at this time of year to spread their message to any Slayer keen enough to decipher their scrawls spread across Ramsgate and beyond. To combat the Unseen, today we’re launching the Haunted Shadows Hunt Pass, which welcomes a new faction: the Night Hunters. Haunted Shadows offers Slayers the ability to earn a full set of Night Hunter cosmetic armour on either the Basic or Elite track, plus a prestigious set of Ultra Armour at Elite Track Level 50. The Dauntless store is also filled to the brim with spooky seasonal cosmetics, emotes, and more, so be sure to take a look if you fancy yourself a bone xylophonist. As we outlined in the previous post, the new Bounty system rewards slayers with Hunt Pass experience, and today you’ll be able to draft a new slate of bounties to work your way to level 50. Whether or not you’ve been following our Unseen community ARG, today you can celebrate the event as we’re offering both the Unseen emote and laughing pumpkin flare for free until November 5. Grab ‘em while you can! We’re always listening closely to community feedback, and we’re happy to share that Haunted Shadows brings with it numerous performance and quality-of-life improvements. Starting today, we’re introducing an AFK timer to all hunts, so Slayers who go idle for more than three minutes will be automatically returned to Ramsgate. As always, Behemoth health and difficulty will automatically scale for the remaining party. We’ve also done a full design pass on our compass system, ensuring that Slayers can easily find their way around Ramsgate, identify quest prompts, and track flares while on a hunt. There are dozens more nuanced changes that arrive with Haunted Shadows, so if you’re interested in digging in, go check out our official community Reddit. Lastly, I want to remind all PlayStation Plus subscribers about our exclusive Royal Steel weapon skin set. You can grab it now at PlayStation Store and look especially regal as you slay. Have any feedback on Haunted Shadows, or Dauntless in general? Hit us up in the comments! View the full article
  9. Lithium: Inmate 39 Relapsed Edition launches next Tuesday, November 5, taking you back to the twisted mind of our favorite psychiatric patient. Get ready for new game mechanics, new bosses, new creatures, new music and a whole new terrifying atmosphere that will keep you up at night. This enhanced version gives players a better, darker look at its creepy creatures and adds new trophies and items. We’ve also added brand-new cutscenes created with the intent of immersing you in Lithium’s shadows, frightening you, then leaving you alone to walk the path on your own. Our team of artists and developers got behind the script and set out to tell the story of the Inmate 39 the way we originally intended. We paid close attention to details throughout the game to make sure everything feels even more disturbing this time. The aesthetics of the walls, floors, and terrains have been redesigned, with blood splashes, gore pieces, animation and violence better fitting the style of the game. The game’s bosses — other patients whose backgrounds you can learn via their medical records — have also been remodeled from scratch and their environments have been enriched with pieces of their past. Lithium: Inmate 39 Relapsed Edition Photo Gallery We truly are excited to bring this new version to you. We have given it our best effort to ensure this will be a gaming experience you’ll love. So, are you ready to relapse and get lost in a schizophrenic dream? View the full article
  10. Hello everyone I’m Fumihiko Yasuda, the producer for Nioh 2. I’d like to share some incredibly exciting news with you all! First and foremost, I’m happy to finally announce our launch date of March 13, 2020. I know many of you have been waiting and we thank you for your patience while we worked to set an official date. One of the primary reasons for not rushing to set a launch date was to ensure that we can achieve a “genuine evolution” from Nioh, which to us meant that we needed to bring in fresh new elements while retaining the things that we felt were right from the first game. Although there weren’t enough significant changes in the Alpha, we now feel that we have come much closer to reaching our goals. Open Beta Details With that being said, we would also like to give you guys a sneak peek at the game by releasing an open beta demo for you to try out. This open beta will be available from November 1-10 and is downloadable from PlayStation Store. All players will be able to experience new elements such as our extensive character customization feature, our newest weapon- the Switchglaive, and so much more. As you begin the beta, you will enter into a place called the Interim. Unlike the dojo tutorial from the previous game, the Interim is a safe zone where you will be able to choose your weapons, test out the basic moves and transition to a real stage when you are ready. This place was designed and based on the Tibetan Buddhist concept of intermediate, transitional state between life and death. I’m actually very fond of the environment we created which is modeled after the Sanzu river surrounded in tranquility (similar to the river Styx from Greek mythology). As you move on from the Interim, you will start your journey in a stage called Sunomata. This stage is based on the Sunomata castle which by some accounts was constructed in just one night by Hideyoshi. The experience will be an interpretation of historical actualities combined with a healthy injection of Yokai adventure! In addition, this new stage will treat you to an impressive environment covered in autumn maple leaves. In a similar fashion to the cherry blossoms stage (The Village of Cursed Blossoms), we had the great fortune of highlighting another stunning time of year within Japan’s four distinct seasons. I hope that you will enjoy this stage and the open beta in November. If you are skilled and fortunate enough to conquer the beta, you will earn The Mark of the Demon Slayer – a reward entitling you to unlock the Kamaitachi Helmet from the in-game Shrine to use in the full game when it arrives next year. Although the trial time is limited, we sincerely hope that you can play the beta and provide your invaluable feedback to us by responding to the survey. Pre-orders Start Today Also at this time you will be able to pre-order Nioh 2 from PlayStation Store, which will award you with valuable bonus items to use with the final game. For those of you who are new to Nioh, and want to discover the world around it, the original game will be available for free to PlayStation Plus members on November 5. As for the seasoned veterans, kindly guide the newcomers with your battle hardened skills. As the development enters into its final phase, we will be busy with debug, rebalance, debug, rebalance… All kidding aside, I’m anxious for you guys to play the Beta and we very much look forward to your feedback so that we can properly finalize Nioh 2. Thank you for your support! View the full article

Prepare for the fight of your life next month as you lock swords with otherworldly evil in brutal action-RPG Nioh, and struggle for survival in tense psychological horror Outlast 2 – both joining the PS Plus monthly games lineup on November 5. Let’s take a closer look: Nioh Nioh is a visceral, action-driven adventure where you must hone your skills, upgrade your weapons and demonstrate perseverance and mastery in besting some of ancient Japan’s fiercest demons. Travel to the blood-soaked Sengoku period and take on the role of an embattled outsider as you fight to liberate a guardian spirit from the clutches of a power-hungry sorcerer. Wielding swords, spears, shuriken, bows, rifles, powerful elemental magic and more, shape yourself into an unstoppable samurai warrior. Develop new skills, find ever more powerful armor and perfect your playstyle as you explore overrun towns, brooding caves and abandoned harbors. Outlast 2 Immerse yourself in a desperate fight for survival in an isolated rural community as you attempt to rescue your kidnapped wife from the clutches of a deranged cult. Having narrowly escaped death in a helicopter crash, set out into the rundown village of Temple Gate and do your best to avoid its crazed inhabitants as you fight to locate your partner. Haunted by your troubled past, look for answers as you uncover the ever more disturbing secrets lurking beneath the town and the twisted ambitions of its charismatic leader. 12. Gran Turismo fans! We’re excited to finally announce you that the October update Patch 1.47 will be available for everyone starting tonight, October 30, at 10:00 PT (Internet connection required for update) adding the legendary race track, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and four new cars including the Porsche Taycan Turbo S ‘19. New Vehicles The following four vehicles will be available: Porsche Taycan Turbo S ’19 Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce ’15 Mazda Demio XD Touring ’15 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG ’71 Featured Vehicle: Porsche Taycan Turbo S ’19(Gr.X) The Taycan is Porsche’s answer to the question of sustainable mobility, their first fully-electric vehicle. A sports sedan that combines sports performance with everyday usability, its electric all-wheel-drive system uses two electric motors mounted on the front and rear axles, with the rear-motor encompassing a revolutionary 2-speed transmission allowing unparalleled acceleration and efficiency at high speeds. Both the Turbo and the Turbo S models normally output 460 kW (616 BHP), but with the overboost feature engaged the output of the Turbo model is boosted to 500 kW (670 BHP), and the Turbo S cranks out a staggering 560 kW (750 BHP). This incredible power output is enabled by the first 800-volt power unit to be seen in a production car, which successfully achieves greater efficiency while drastically reducing charging time. And of course no effort has been spared in producing dynamic handling. It features Porsche’s superior active suspension management and torque vectoring technology, controlling these systems in sync to provide the best possible driving experience under all driving conditions. Taycan’s technical advances also extend to its user interface, enabling media and air-conditioning to be operated directly through its intuitive voice control system. The Taycan carries forward Porsche’s historical lineage while signaling a new era of automobiles. Truly a model in which heritage meets the future. New Track: Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps Spa-Francorchamps is located 40km Southeast of Liège, Eastern Belgium’s industrial city. This is a high speed technical circuit that has hosted everything from F1 to endurance races over the years, and the 7+km long track utilizes the mountainous environment of its location for its many ups and downs. For this reason the track is the very definition of dynamic, including many famous turns such as the high speed uphill corner ‘Eau Rouge’, the ultra-high speed left hand ‘Blanchimont’, and the ‘Bus Stop’ chicane has been the scene of many famous battles. The track is praised by many racing drivers for being one of the most challenging in the world. Spa- In addition, the following new rounds have been added to the GT League: Beginner League: Two new rounds added to the Group 4 Cup Amateur League: Two new rounds added to the Real Circuit Tours Professional League: Two new rounds added to the Nostalgic 1979 Endurance League: One new round added to the X2019 Competition Endurance Series View the full article
  13. The Avengers are a complex group of Super Heroes, and that complexity takes center stage in the team’s upcoming original, action-adventure spectacle currently in development at Crystal Dynamics. While the super-powered ensemble is traditionally celebrated as a group of heroes, the catastrophic event that kicks off their newest journey paints them as villains. But the responsible way to wrap your head around a larger-than-life experience like Marvel’s Avengers is to observe the facts. As such, here’s some key intel we’ve gathered on the upcoming blockbuster action game during a chat with Studio Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics, Noah Hughes. We also received a concise video that highlights exciting new details around Super Hero customization, mission variety, and the insidious AIM’s influence on society. Asymmetrical co-op is a big focus Not a shocker here, but the Avengers’ unique combat styles complement one another. “We know everyone is wondering how co-op works, and we’re excited to go into more detail in early 2020,” Hughes says. “However, we can give a quick overview in the meantime! As you see in the video, there are two different types of missions: Hero Missions and Warzone Missions. Hero Missions are single-player only and are part of the overall Campaign. These Hero Missions are specific canvases to showcase each hero as you reassemble them to your growing roster. Warzone Missions can be played solo or with a group of up to four players as any Hero in your roster, allowing you to embody an Avenger within a team of Avengers! Each mission scales based on the team size and makeup.” “While you’ll be taking control of iconic characters, player choice is important to our experience. Players can customize each of their Hero’s Gear, Skills, and choose from a diverse array of Outfits, all of which creates a personal experience. For instance, one player might play Thor as an AOE damage dealer controlling the crowd, but an ally could build him up primarily focused on melee tactics. It is critical that we deliver the true feeling of being each unique Super Hero — it’s the Avengers after all! You can fast-track straight to multiplayer if you want Or hey, you can head right into the co-op missions that exist outside of the campaign if you prefer, after completing the introductory “A-Day” battle. “The caveat there is that you’ll be exposed to spoilers” from the campaign, Hughes cautioned. Your character progress will be persistent between modes Another thoughtful touch from Crystal Dynamics. Your character’s progress will persist across different play modes, so you can jump between the campaign and co-op missions whenever you want without missing a beat. Another bonus: you and a friend can team up online, and the game will scale the difficulty to accommodate. A feat worthy of the Avengers! There are many ways to customize your Super Hero abilities As you gain levels, you’ll be able to purchase new abilities via skill trees. Though many of these skills will upgrade your attack power, you’ll also be making choices between different build types. “We have a vast amount of Gear unique to each Super Hero in Marvel’s Avengers, each with its own rarity, stats, and Perks to unlock,” Hughes says. “When we say ‘play your way,’ we mean it. Players can dive deep into min-maxing their hero build through Skills and Gear. Players can switch out Gear and choose which pieces suit individual playstyles as new, better Gear is discovered or earned, allowing them to further tune their playstyle.” “For Gear — the real powers are found by unlocking their innate Perks. Perks are unique modifiers tied to Gear that augment or enhance how each Super Hero plays — examples of Perks are the ability to unleash an AOE Burst upon taking damage or faster recharging Heroics. In addition, Branded Gear Sets, which enable more custom builds with stat bonuses are present in the game. Gear — and Skills — are a foundational part of our progression system and allow players to really flex their creativity. This, combined with the crazy number of purely cosmetic Outfits available for each Super Hero, will make everyone feel unique. What you’re seeing in the Game Overview video is pre-Alpha so it’s subject to change and evolve as we develop the game.” New suits will be cosmetic only The game’s detailed visual customization will allow you to unlock (or purchase) new suits and outfits as you play, but the fashion upgrades won’t affect gameplay. There will be “…no loot boxes, no pay-to-win, you’re not going to be paying money to beat the game or be better at the game,” Hughes clarified. Outfits will be a combination of fan favorites from comics, the colorful and rich designs present in eighty plus years of Marvel history and new designs that are completely original to the game. The growing influence of AIM… What would a world where Super Heroes live be without insidious powers to keep in check? “AIM, or Advanced Idea Mechanics, rises from the ashes of ‘A-Day,’ when many people were affected by the Terrigen mist from the reactor explosion. AIM feels that those affected must be cured,” Hughes says. “A growing public sentiment is shaped that Super Heroes are dangerous and if left unchecked, they could wreak more havoc than good. AIM wants to define mankind’s future with reason, with logic. They believe in science, not Super Heroes, and that this devout purity to science will make the world a safer, stronger place; which also means Super Heroes can’t be left to roam freely. “Due to this doctrine of science, AIM has mobilized an AI force to protect the rest of us against super powered individuals while claiming to research a cure for those affected by A-Day.” “Having 80 years of history to draw from, we’ve recreated classic AIM characters from the comic books through the Crystal Dynamics lens, such as the Keeper (our version of the iconic AIM Beekeeper), our version of the Synthoid, or the all new Monotronic Exo; this is how AIM stands toe-to-toe as humans versus Super Heroes. And this is just the start. However… AIM’s pursuit of a technocratic utopia, if left unchecked, could unleash an even greater threat to the world that only the Avengers could stop. It’s up to players to unravel the AIM conspiracy, reassemble the Avengers, and save the Earth.” The characters are really in-depth Any worthy Avenger has a Swiss Army knife of skills that lets them adapt mid-combat. Crystal Dynamics is creating characters with robust battle options. “I am very much enjoying Black Widow the most right now,” says Hughes, “I love her agility and combos. Black Widow’s grapple allows her to zip around, she’s got pistols which give her really good range, and she’s got Widow’s Bite and various equipment as some of her specials…” “Her gauntlets have special attacks — you may have seen there are a couple Heroics you can trigger through Skills players can modify or upgrade, like her trademark Widow’s Bite. She’s also got her tonfa, which are awesome, and she can also combine them into a deadly bo staff. There’s just a wide and wild range of unique skills she can put into action.” Post-launch characters will come at no additional cost Though Crystal Dynamics isn’t discussing the number of post-launch Super Heroes planned, Hughes clarified that sheer quantity itself isn’t the goal. “We treat each of these Heroes as wanting to be able to star in their own game… The truth is the hardest thing is deciding which Heroes to not make.” Marvel’s Avengers assemble on PS4 May 15, 2020. 14. Over four years ago, we made a bold decision to change the rules and revolutionize the traditional TV-viewing experience in the U.S. with PlayStation Vue. We set the bar high and sought to innovate an established industry by delivering a modern TV experience. By completely rethinking live and on demand television, we offered an incredible user experience that allowed viewers to discover and watch content in completely new ways. Today we are announcing that we will shut down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business. PlayStation fans can continue to access movie and TV content through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and via our partnerships with top entertainment apps. With 100 million PlayStation 4s in the market today, our community continues to grow and thrive. We will continue to deliver the best entertainment experiences across the network, along with other key gaming services, including PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus. We are very proud of what PlayStation Vue was able to accomplish. We had ambitious goals for how our service could change how people watch TV, showcasing PlayStation’s ability to innovate in a brand-new category within the Pay TV industry. We want to thank all of our customers, some of whom have been with us since PlayStation Vue’s launch in 2015. We appreciate your continued support as we move through this transitional period and look toward the future. View the full article

  16. For many of us at Digital Eclipse, the original release of Aladdin on the 16-bit Sega Genesis console back in 1993 was a monumental and unforgettable moment. It was the first time that a game truly resembled an interactive cartoon and was able to redefine what a “licensed game” could be like. It was also a game with a very interesting story behind it, given the close involvement of Disney Feature Animation, so the creation of a collection focused on it certainly always appealed to us. It would take several years, a lucky discovery, and some good timing for it all to finally come together. Our team at Digital Eclipse has known members of the original Virgin Games Aladdin development team for quite some time, with one of them (Nick Bruty) actually working at the company, so the notion of doing something with Aladdin was always bouncing around. However, we wanted to make sure that whatever we did was something special. Just throwing the Aladdin game into a box wouldn’t be enough. We needed to do something different, but what? Diving back into these games to share some new and refreshed content with fans was something we got especially excited about, and luckily publisher Nighthawk Interactive and Disney felt the same way. With their support, work on Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King began earlier this year. As discussions with the original development team progressed, the pieces started coming together. The discovery of a wealth of content that never made it into the released version of the game was a major eye-opener. There was so much unseen content that the idea of an Aladdin collection really started making sense. The Lion King was another 16-bit Disney favorite published by Virgin Games soon after the original Aladdin, and it seemed like the perfect time to bring these two games together into one collection. The Games A lot of thought goes into what games are included in every project we work on, and it’s important that the games connect to each other in key ways and are able to present an interesting story. For this collection, we brought together two classic Disney games connected by the team at Virgin in the heydays of the Genesis and SNES. But we went beyond the Genesis and SNES, working hard to include multiple playable versions of the various platform releases fans have enjoyed over the years: Aladdin Genesis Version Japanese Mega Drive Version GameBoy Version Colorized GameBoy Version The Lion King SNES Version Genesis Version Japanese Mega Drive Version GameBoy Version Colorized GameBoy Version The Options It was also important to us to include a variety of options to improve the experience of playing these games in the modern age of consoles. That meant adding “rewind” to all the games so that players could easily backtrack and overcome mistakes, providing easy access to level skips and invulnerability, and even including the Interactive Game Viewer featuring entire (and fully watchable) playthroughs of the games so that players can jump in and start playing at whatever spot they want. We want every person who buys this collection to be able to finish every game, so it’s important for us to provide the tools for them to do that and empower them to enjoy the experience any way they want to. We also feel that players should be able to adjust the overall presentation of each game to suit their tastes, so including a variety of screen options was a must. From each game’s options screen, players can switch between a screen size that best reflects the native aspect ratio of the original game or make it bigger or even fill the entire screen, if they want. They can also choose from three different filters designed to mimic the look of traditional CRT televisions and monitors, as well as turn on screen borders. The “Final Cut” With such rich history behind both of these titles, the museum section in Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King packs in a lot of content and previously unseen bonus material. In fact, what we learned while filming the behind-the-scenes Aladdin videos for this collection inspired us to create an additional, bonus version: the Aladdin “Final Cut.” While based upon the original version of the game, this updated version features a large number of fixes, tweaks, and additions; so many, in fact, that listing them out would probably take around seven pages. The original development team explained the things they would have loved to have fixed or improved if time had allowed. While they had to make key decisions on what to focus on for their initial release, that got the Digital Eclipse team thinking about how we now had the chance to explore all those refinements. We didn’t want to make any changes just for the sake of making changes, though, so we spent a lot of time figuring out what were things that a) would genuinely make the experience more enjoyable for fans and b) the team would have probably done themselves if they had some extra time. Being fans ourselves, a) was easy to figure out. It was b) that was a bit harder, so we ended up enlisting the aid of some of the original team members, such as William Anderson, to help out with suggestions. William was one of the level designers on Aladdin and a great sounding board for our ideas and suggestions. Combined with Rich Whitehouse’s expansive knowledge of the game, we had the tools needed to make the changes we felt appropriate. It was important to all of us, though, that we didn’t make a version of Aladdin that felt too different from the original. Why mess with something so great, right? Instead, we wanted to create something closer to a “Day 1 patch” for the game, which is something the original team never had the opportunity to make. Along those lines, we addressed key items such as the camera system, which had some problems around centering the character and dead zones; the combat system, which benefited from some adjustments to attack animations, how sword clashes are handled; and overall enemy balance. We then went in and fixed a variety of smaller issues, such as collision bugs that were making it harder for players to reach certain items. We even added in new level sections and items to promote a bit more exploration and sense of discovery. In the end, I feel that we struck a nice balance of preserving what made the original version of Aladdin so great and timeless, while also making some changes that will hopefully make the experience a bit more balanced and enjoyable for fans of the game. We hope they agree. With all the new and never-before-seen content in this collection, only some of which I mentioned, we can’t wait until Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King gets into the hands of the fans tomorrow. The journey to get to this point was sometimes challenging, but we always knew it would be worth it. We hope that this collection captures what made both the original Aladdin and The Lion King games so magical and is able to introduce a whole new generation of Disney fans to some classic experiences that are still just as good today as they were decades ago. 21. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches tonight on PS4, and at a recent Activision-hosted event, I was able to play through the game’s campaign in its entirety. I won’t spoil anything directly here, but I will discuss some of the themes Infinity Ward explores and narrative techniques they employ. With that said, Modern Warfare’s campaign is a ruthless gut-punch of a journey that confronts players with a series of difficult truths and instills an impressive level of empathy for its characters. The restraint and maturity present in Modern Warfare’s narrative, coupled with the respect its writers show for its subject matter, mean that while certain scenes made me feel uncomfortable, that discomfort was always in the service of a greater purpose. Infinity Ward wastes no time confronting players with these challenging scenarios: an early, extremely time-sensitive moral quandary deftly illustrates that hesitation in the face of crisis can get you and those around you killed. Morals take a back seat here, not out of a crass disregard for human empathy, but out of necessity. “The needs of the many,” as they say. How does Infinity Ward approach such delicate subject matter? “With great care and research,” says Jakob Minkoff, Modern Warfare’s single-player design director. “Every step of the way we would ask ourselves ‘What feels responsible? What feels accurate? What feels authentic? And conversely, what feels offensive? What, if we didn’t show it or tried to wash over it, would feel disrespectful?” For my money, the most powerful moment in the campaign comes around the halfway point and forces you to understand the origins of one character’s motives in an emotionally taxing flashback sequence recounting an invasion of their childhood home. Various moments throughout this story challenge players to confront uncomfortable realities and reconcile the uncertainty of war — its participants most often occupy shades of gray, rather than clean-cut black and white boundaries — but after this scene I had to step away and take a walk before getting back into things. I asked Minkoff about Infinity Ward’s approach to building this scene: “You can’t just drop the player into these things,” he explains. “You have to earn it. If we just dropped that at the front of the game, you wouldn’t be bought into that character’s journey and story, and you wouldn’t be bought into the kind of gameplay we ask of you. We’ve given you a bunch of your more ‘core’ gameplay leading up to that, so now you’re ready for that type of experience.” An impressive narrative decision on Infinity Ward’s part comes later in the campaign, organically and seamlessly giving players the opportunity to sit out of a scene they might not feel comfortable participating in. After some stage-setting, it becomes clear that you’re about to be asked to do something that… doesn’t feel right. “You don’t have to do this,” assures another character once the time comes. “Are you in or out?” The game doesn’t judge you for passing here; a quick fade to black and you’re moving on. In addition to the narrative, Modern Warfare’s gameplay shines, too. Weapons have a weighty, kinetic feel that further drive home that these are people — not superhuman killing machines — wielding powerful, terrifying tools of destruction. And since you are, in fact, a person, running headlong into danger is a surefire way to get yourself killed. Whether you’re executing an NVG-supplemented nighttime raid or fighting to escape an enemy ambush, all it takes is a couple well-placed bullets to send you back to your last checkpoint, so it’s more important than ever to check those corners. I played on “Regular” difficulty and, while I’m a competent-enough FPS player, it gave me a run for my money. Throughout this campaign, patience and a plan will outweigh pure gunskill. “It’s higher tension — higher stakes,” explains Minkoff. “It’s not just ‘shoot anything that moves,’ but at the same time, because you’re in such tight quarters, because you have limited visibility, because the enemy knows the space and you don’t, the lethality is so much higher. That’s another thing, mechanically, we decided to do. A lot of games have gotten more and more arcadey, they’ve gotten more that you can run ’n gun, run into a space and absorb a bunch of bullets… Price used to say ‘Check those corners!’ but you didn’t actually have to. In Modern Warfare, you do.” Amplifying the game’s immersive nature, Infinity Ward relies on radio chatter and other organic ways to convey information to the player, rather than lighting up the screen with extraneous markers and waypoints. An early mission instructs the player to look through a scope to mark enemies occupying a nearby encampment — okay, par for the course so far — but instead of highlighting enemies and letting the player track them through walls, this is simply vocal intel conveyed matter-of-factly to your team (and to you, if you’re paying attention). This early example sets the tone for the level of realism Infinity Ward grounded the full campaign in. Of course, if you’re not sure where you should be headed all it takes is a quick tap of your DualShock 4’s touch pad to bring up a visual indicator that will point you in the right direction — an interface element Infinity Ward iterated to perfection thanks to technology that allowed them to track the movement of focus testers’ eyes. “If it just appeared at the edge of the screen, I could tell that players never saw it,” says Zied Rieke, gameplay director on Modern Warfare. “Once we made it move, we could see that they followed that motion — they immediately got it.” The campaign’s pacing is impeccable, too. You’ll rarely be faced with a loading screen (unless you die) and impressively animated cutscenes transition seamlessly into gameplay, meaning you won’t have as many excuses to mindlessly reach for your phone while waiting for a mission to load. Asked whether this was an intentional goal the team set out to achieve when beginning development on Modern Warfare, Minkoff replied with a grin: “Hell yeah. Loading screens are the worst.” This all adds up to an immersive, technically impressive, harrowing depiction of the cost of war on an international level — and a personal one. “We don’t believe that any of the characters in this game are wholly right or wrong,” posits Minkoff. “We believe that every one of them occupies a moral gray area. You can have characters you’re rooting for, but you’re only rooting for them because you’ve been presented their side of the story. “At the end of the day, we believe that’s the true nature of the world: None of our hands are clean, no matter which country you work for or live in.” View the full article
  22. To our fans, Let me cut to the chase and get the news out of the way. The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29, 2020. I know. It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date. The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members. After working on something for so many years, it’s invigorating to get a glimpse of validation for all the hard work. However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team. While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry. We hope you understand that this additional time ensures that The Last of Us Part II lives up to our collective ambition as well as our commitment to the highest level of quality. We know the extra few months will add to what may already be an excruciating wait for all of us. We are grateful for your patience and continued support. Come next May, you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II. -Neil View the full article
  23. Hey Vault Hunters! Starting today, Bloody Harvest – Borderlands 3’s first Event with a capital “E” – is available for free to all players, and with it comes a new boss, new map, new Terror gameplay mechanic, new Legendary weapon, and more! Check out the trailer above for a quick look at what’s in store. Now that Bloody Harvest is here, we wanted to take this opportunity to talk not just about Bloody Harvest but also about Gearbox’s execution of “Event” content as a whole, since prior to Borderlands 3, Events weren’t something Gearbox had ever done as a studio. To start, let’s define what Events actually are. In a nutshell, Events are repeatable missions that put a twist on combat throughout the entirety of the game (in Bloody Harvest’s case, the introduction of Haunted enemies scattered through the galaxy) and eventually reward access to an Event Map and Boss. Events contain cosmetics unlockable via Event Challenges, a new set of unique gear, and Anointed weapon parts that are only available during each Event. After the Event, those items become unattainable, though any gear or cosmetics earned by players remain in their inventories. From the Beginning We came up with the earliest concept of what became Events almost two years ago in December 2017. At the time, we had three primary goals: Leverage the ideas behind the Headhunter Packs of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 but give them a modern twist with free, cyclical, and re-usable content releases. Create a layer of content on top of the regular game rather than a singular, separate Headhunter level. Implement a robust reward system with limited time loot and Event Challenges. In the very first pitch for Events, we expected players to start a new character. Events would have released bi-monthly, and we were even considering leaderboards. I’m a huge fan of games like Path of Exile, Warframe, World of Warcraft, and Diablo 3, and the way they handle post-launch content inspired me in different ways. Path of Exile has an immovable release schedule and Challenge Leagues; Warframe has incredible scheduled and reusable content; and WoW and Diablo 3 do great seasonal bits. We needed to boil those various bits down, put our own spin on them, and turn it all into something that would work for Borderlands 3. Over time, player characters became something we wanted players to stick with, rather than encouraging players to make new ones. It turned out leaderboards don’t work without dedicated servers because it’s easy to fake/cheat your way to the top. A bimonthly release schedule is more or less untenable. Et cetera. But the things that stuck around were: limited-time loot, Event Challenges, and the idea that we could affect the entirety of Borderlands’ combat without breaking the whole damn game. On to Phase Two Once we had a plan in place, we then had to figure out how to bring it to life in-game. As Borderlands 3’s first post-release content, Events encountered a host of challenges due to the fact that our content would be the first to release following the launch of the game. We found solutions, but ultimately, there was one very robust piece of tech that provided the backbone of how Events work. This part gets a bit technical, but essentially: we ended up piggy-backing off of the game’s streaming system because Jasper Foreman, the coder who wrote the Spawn System, was simultaneously able to create a major component we needed for Events. Thanks to his work, we gained the ability to affect anything that spawns or dies across the entire game. This was a huge win for design. In the end, one relatively small piece of blueprint handles the entirety of the world mechanic (i.e. what players see in the regular game with Haunted enemies in the Bloody Harvest event). With this tech in place, we had what we needed not only for Bloody Harvest but for Events content in general. So naturally, we have plans for more Events and, more importantly, plans for branching out from holidays (though we will totally do those too). We get to be really creative about what we are adding in the future, and that’s fun – because when we have fun making stuff, players have fun. That’s how Borderlands gets made. We will eventually get back to things like Mercenary Day, but for now, enjoy Bloody Harvest and thanks for the continued support! View the full article
  24. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches imminently, and if you’re like us, you’re ready to spend the entire opening weekend playing this new entry to the Call of Duty franchise. Whether you participated in Modern Warfare’s Multiplayer Alpha and Beta periods, or are jumping into the game for the first time, there is always room for improvement as a Tier One Operator. We’ve studied this game to give you as much intel as possible so that you have the tools to become a Modern Warfare master. We’ve summarized what we’ve learned while playing the game into a handy top-10 list that anyone – from a recruit to a veteran – can learn from. Operators, these are your Top-10 Tips for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Multiplayer: 10. Play the Campaign and Special Ops. While we know a good portion of players just enjoy Multiplayer, there is a lot to be learned about Modern Warfare through its Campaign and Special Ops modes. Exploring these modes could give you a bit more practice with the game’s basic mechanics against A.I. opponents, whose difficulty can be adjusted to offer a challenge for any skill level. 9. Open up those Options. Default settings are a great starting point for any newcomer, yet it’s not the end-all be-all for how the game should be played. Whether it’s trying out new sensitivity settings and button layouts or fine-tuning visual options to your comfort level, the biggest step towards improving your game could be the changes you make before dropping into battle. 8. Know your Loadout. A shotgun may not be the best weapon for long-range sharpshooting and hitting a target with a sniper rifle without aiming down sights can be difficult. Even if tensions are high in battle, always keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of your loadout. 7. Think like a Tier One Operator. The best players in Modern Warfare know the value of staying alive and taking calculated risks. Reckless deaths may lead to the enemy gaining the upper hand, so it may be wise to take a tactical approach and consider all options before diving headfirst into combat. 6. If there is an objective, consider playing around it. When playing objective-based game modes, you’re more likely to get into engagements and win games by focusing on the objective at hand. Plus, the potential XP gained for capturing objectives and the multiple challenges revolving around winning games, make it worth considering playing the objective. 5. Take the drive to Enlisted Rank 55. When you first start Multiplayer, you will be limited to default loadouts, a few Killstreaks, and two Field Upgrades. However, as you play the game and gain experience for both your Operator and weapons, you’ll be able to further customize loadouts and more to your playstyle. Keep on ranking up until you have the entire arsenal at your disposal at Enlisted Rank 55. 4. Experimentation could equal success. Don’t be afraid to try out a new weapon, Killstreak, Field Upgrade, or even an attachment. Who knows? Coming out of your comfort zone could help you get a step closer to upping your game and finding an epic win streak. 3. Communication is key. Tier One Operators is a plural term. The best in the business probably rely on their squadmates to execute the mission at hand. Whether you dive into Multiplayer with friends or make some new ones in the lobby, clear, effective communication can go a long way in battle. 2. Intel is power, both in-game and out.
