Hey everyone! I’m JF Dugas, Senior Creative Director on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy at Eidos-Montréal. When we first started working on the game and got to speak with Marvel about what was ahead of us, they gave us carte blanche to craft our own take on this band of misfits. For us, it meant diving into everything that had came before – comics, movies, animated series and more – to understand the essence of these characters, and from there, reimagine them in a fresh and faithful way. Today, we’re going to tell you more about their backstories and how they relate to their designs. In our universe, a massive Galactic War initiated by a race called the Chitauri took place 12 years before the beginning of the game. This conflict ravaged the whole galaxy and left a lot of destruction in its wake, impacting everyone – including the Guardians, of course. Peter Quill, son of J’Son (king of the planet Spartax) and Meredith Quill, was living a mostly carefree teenage life on Earth when the Chitauri landed in his backyard. They killed his mother and kidnapped him to use him as leverage against Spartax, holding him prisoner for the next four years. During that time, he met Yondu, leader of the Ravagers, and escaped with his help. He joined the Ravagers and participated in the Galactic War to help the Kree resistance against the Chitauri. Years later, he fell off with the Ravagers and decided to form the Guardians of the Galaxy as heroes-for-hire, seeing opportunity in a galaxy still reeling from the aftermath of the War. Looking for adventure and profit, this is Star-Lord’s chance for a fresh start, which he’ll extend to his future Guardians. Our approach for Star-Lord’s design was to go for a space pirate look, combined with key elements from his backstory. When he was a kid, Peter was a huge fan of a rock band called none other than… Star-Lord! This became the origin of his cosmic name, with his passion for this band informing his design, for example with the patch in the back of his jacket. Peter Quill is very nostalgic of his time on Earth, and this is also reflected by his 1980’s hairstyle, the studs on his leather jacket and the pins that harken back to things like his favorite video game. Drax, who was born and raised on the planet Katath, experienced tragedy during the War as well. His wife and daughter were killed by Thanos, who was working with the Chitauri. He embarked on a quest for revenge, and met cosmic Marvel characters such as Mentor and Chronos, who helped him prepare for the fight ahead. Ultimately, he killed Thanos in a legendary battle, but didn’t truly believe he was dead and continued his hunt. Drax became a wanted man because of the destruction his obsession caused, and finally decided to turn himself in. He spent seven years in prison, and was recruited by Star-Lord on the day of his release. Drax joined the Guardians, hoping to prove he was more than ‘the Destroyer’. The Katathian scarification on his body are not just for show: in our lore, they also tell about all the important events of his life, including of course his love for his family and the battles he fought to honor and avenge them. Drax has been through hell and back, and his markings are a testament to his resilience. Gamora is the sole survivor of a race called the Zen-Whoberi. She was adopted by Thanos and became sister to Nebula. After years at their side, she decided to defect from Thanos and the Chitauri, and teamed up with Richard Rider to fight against them and help end the Galactic War. But because of her past, she was never accepted as a hero. Years later, a battle against Nebula left Gamora on the verge of death. By sheer coincidence, she crossed paths with Mantis and the Priests of Pama, who took her in and healed her. The two of them became friends, and Gamora didn’t think twice about coming to her aid when Mantis was kidnapped by an assassin. This is when she met the Guardians and teamed up with them to save Mantis. Gamora is the deadliest woman in the galaxy, and this is wholly reflected by her outfit. At the same time, we took inspiration from some of her looks in the Guardians comics, with black and white armor. Inspirations for her gear also came from big feline predators. She can prey without being seen. We chose to give her a full tactical body armor, with some sections of the suit designed with sharp edges to emphasize how lethal she can be. Everything about her style is sharp and practical, all the way down to the blades on her knuckles and boots. She’s ready for action at any moment. Groot is also the sole survivor of his own race, the Flora Colossi, his home planet having been destroyed by the Chitauri during the War. Groot himself was left critically injured, and the remnants of his body was discovered by search drones sent by Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector. Groot was brought back to him and regrew from a twig while imprisoned. This is where his best friend-to-be Rocket arrived and stole him from Tivan’s collection while on a job. Rocket is a genetically-engineered super-soldier experiment born on Halfworld during the Galactic War. He escaped his captors thanks to his superior intelligence and settled in Knowhere, taking odd jobs – ultimately stealing Groot and befriending him. They set off to explore the galaxy, working together as bounty hunters for the next 10 years. One of their marks happened to be Star-Lord himself, who offered to pay them double the price on his head if they joined his Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket and Groot are inseparable, and their designs are similarly intertwined. Their gear echoes their dynamic and how integral they are to one another: for instance, Groot wears a harness created by Rocket so he can climb up and fire away at enemies, and Rocket sports a bead shaped like a mini-Groot in his goatee. Now that you know the story of how the Guardians came together, you’re all set for the release of our game on October 26 on PS4 and PS5! We still have a lot to show on our game, so stay tuned. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/CvK00VZnCVQView the full article

Black Panther has been an iconic character in the Marvel universe for over 50 years now, first debuting in the comics in 1966. With so much history in a single character, there were endless avenues our team could have gone down to create the Marvel’s Avengers version of Black Panther and his diverse collection of outfits. We’d like to take a moment to discuss creating T’Challa’s look and our thought-process behind it. Iconic Outfit – Let’s begin with a Crystal Dynamics original design and the outfit you’ll start with in the Expansion. When creating this outfit, we combined the classic Black Panther visuals and silhouette with the full hood and armbands with the more modern and functional aspects of his look that many fans have grown accustomed to over the years. We used these two aspects of Black Panther’s history and put it through what we call the “Crystal Lens” in order to create a suit that could be more realistically made with materials and construction methods, but also still set in the fantastical where it is a one-of-a-kind creation just for T’Challa. We took the classic armbands on his forearms and turned them into bracers that Black Panther can use to defend himself. We also wanted to include the crest in the center of his chest to denote that iconic feel that he is the Black Panther and to give him a visual ownership of that mantle. When it comes to the helmet, we were inspired to create a silhouette that was reminiscent of his first look in the comics, but with closer inspection, there is more structure to it; the eyes aren’t empty, they have a lens there that signifies he is looking at his own HUD to once again blend the classic with the modern. We also included some fine detail into the outfit to make it more advanced and cutting edge by interlacing Vibranium throughout to reflect his ability to absorb energy. Our team built the mesh of the Iconic Outfit from scratch and used our material system to push how the lighting reflects off of the multiple surfaces in the outfit whether that’s the carbon fiber, hard plastic, or the original woven material. Players can zoom in closely to the Iconic Outfit and see just how much detail we put into the suit due to our material system. A version of this Iconic Outfit that will be released is inspired by Black Panther’s secret guard, the Hatut Zeraze, who eventually became mercenaries that were loyal to Wakanda. When our team was thinking of what other outfits to include with the War for Wakanda Expansion, we wanted to provide a variety from various points of Black Panther’s 50+ year comic history. We also wanted to make sure each of them had a signature look that could be instantly recognizable from a distance whether on a screen or in the game, so we went with bold choices that stand out. Most Dangerous Man Outfit – Taken from the comics, this noir-style outfit was front and center when Kasper Cole, who first appeared in Black Panther #50 (2002), briefly took on the mantle of Black Panther in New York City. Kasper thought wearing the outfit would give him an edge, especially with the coat over it. Damisa-Sarki Outfit – With “Introducing the Sensational Black Panther!” on the cover of the comic that showed how Black Panther was first envisioned by Jack Kirby, our team knew we had to do a reinterpretation of it. Meaning “The Panther” in Wakandan, the Damisa-Sarki Outfit shows Black Panther in a short cape and the same attention to detail when it comes to the materials of the outfit. Black Panther has worn a cape in many of his looks throughout comic history, which is reflected in this outfit. Royal Legacy Outfit – This is an outfit taken from the iconic Black Panther comic series. We wanted to include an outfit that paid homage to ancient Wakandan culture. We worked with Marvel to ensure proper care was given to all of T’Challa’s outfits. That’s it for now! We hope you enjoyed reading about our process on creating Black Panther’s many outfits and inspired we were by his vast history. Our team put a lot of heart and soul into ensuring Black Panther and Wakanda had a visual identity that was instantly recognizable by Black Panther fans, but also one that we could add a Crystal Dynamics touch to. We’re always creating new outfits for Marvel’s Avengers and will continue to create more for Black Panther. Keep an eye out for them! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/mYWo9o-ZbfYView the full article

I’m Chris Chung, the indie developer behind Catlateral Damage and its brand new Remeowstered version. Today I’m thrilled to announce that Catlateral Damage: Remeowstered will be releasing on both PS4 and PS5 on September 15! If you’re not familiar with the original Catlateral Damage, it’s a family friendly, first-person destructive house cat simulator where you get to be a cat on a rampage and knock things onto the floor. You know, typical kitty stuff. It started as a small one-week prototype back in 2013, inspired by the antics of my childhood cat, Nippy (he once dragged a whole pizza off the kitchen counter). Eventually, it went on to have a successful Kickstarter and release on PS4 in 2016, with a free VR Mode added a few months later for the launch of PlayStation VR. Catlateral Damage: Remeowstered is the “mew and improved” definitive edition of the game, with a whole bunch of new content and improvements to the user interface, animations, and overall visuals. Fan-favorite features like collecting real-life cat photos and the laid-back Litter Box Mode also return. The most substantial change is a complete progression redesign, where you complete goals in Goals Mode to unlock new levels and the other game modes. You can also collect treats by finding them in levels or receiving them as rewards for completing goals in Procedural Mode (where levels are procedurally generated). Treats unlock permanent stat boosts and special abilities, like a more powerful charged swat and a forward dash. In addition, there’s a completely revamped soundtrack, a bunch of new pet photos to find, and new features like scratching curtains and riding a robot vacuum. The PlayStation 5 version also has some special features that leverage the console’s capabilities. Of course there’s the 4K resolution, faster load times, and increased render distances, as well as support for Activities and Game Presets (for camera inversion). But my favorite feature is the DualSense wireless controller’s advanced haptics, which allow you to feel your in-game cat purring when it sleeps as if you were holding it in your hands. Adorable. Both PS4 and PS5 versions also support the motion sensor function for camera aiming, in case using the stick isn’t your thing. Bottom line: if you love cats like I do, I’m sure you’ll love Remeowstered. It’s a relaxing game about just being a cat, and everybody wants to be a cat. Oh, and if you purchase the PS4 version, you get the PS5 version for free (and vice versa). Please check it out when it launches on September 15th! Here’s a photo of my cats, Wil & Lyn (who are playable in the game), and thanks for reading 😺 http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/h6NJLMHQup8View the full article

Greetings everyone, I am Emre Sağırlar, Community Manager of Hero Concept. Our latest title Mayhem Brawler will be out on streets tomorrow and I wanted to talk about the project’s development process, how it evolved, and the studio’s innovative approaches to this classic genre. Let’s scroll the belts, shall we? Play Video One wild coin was yet to be inserted Mayhem Brawler is an urban fantasy-themed beat ’em up game with a comic-book art style. But it wasn’t always that. Originally, we’d set out on this project to create a digital trading card game. We wanted to create an urban fantasy universe with a superhero motif, featuring stories from every corner and perspective. TCG’s are well-known for their huge amount of lore, locations, characters, creatures, and much more, which made it the ideal genre to realise our world in. Ultimately the team realized it would take a significant amount of time to bring all the corners of this rich universe into a cohesive whole with the careful balancing we’d want in a trading card game. Yet with all the materials we’d created, a sudden thought struck: why not adapt them into a classic style, side-scrolling beat ‘em up? With our world, characters and art style drawing inspiration from the likes of comic-books, classic beat ‘em ups, and novels that told everlasting stories, the crew was able to bring some new things to the genre. Even though we’ve inspired from the classic beat ’em ups, the story won’t involve the overused “save the kidnapped daughter/girlfriend” formula. Instead, players will be the top metahuman officers of super-powered law enforcement agency Stronghold. You – and up to two friends in local multiplayer – will police the streets and save the residents of Mayhem City. The urban fantasy-theme gave us opportunities to create varieties of enemy minions and bosses, such as wizards that assemble for spine-tingling rituals, vampires that own megacorps to do their evil deeds, lycanthropes that live among mankind for filthy errands, and mejins that came from another dimension to simply party in the neighborhood. As beta players shared their surprise and delight at the fantastical creatures they faced, we knew we were off to a good start with the choices we’ve made for the project. We’re proud of this world we’ve created and as such, the idea for a trading card game at some point in the future is still very much alive. Does the walker choose the path, or path the walker? The immense amount of lore written for Mayhem Universe allowed us to create a “choose your own adventure” style journey. With a more labyrinthine progression system, the story will offer three completely different endings. The story has twelve stages in total, but players will go on seven patrols in one playthrough as choices will be made at the end of every level. These choices will determine which ending players will confront. Each level is divergent from others with its unique locations, stories, enemies and a final boss. For example, players can finish the game without encountering a single wizard. We believe this will offer multiple, distinct player experiences, with separate stories to hear, diverse enemies to arrest, and tons of pop culture references to notice. Naturally, this will heighten the replay value as well. Know thine enemy, exploit their weakness We’ve taken a page out of the RPG handbook in rolling with status effects as a combat mechanic. Our officers can perform offensive and defensive special abilities. Not only these skills will improve players combo potential, but they will also leave opponents with certain condition effects, such as Bleed (making the target take additional damage) or Expose (decreasing an opponent’s resistance). Weapons that you’ll pick up as you patrol the streets (crowbars, knives, handguns) will also be able to apply condition effects depending on their type. Using the right effect on the right enemy will help you deal greater damage, clear stages faster and obtain higher scores. Be warned: Minions of Mayhem City can possess special abilities or use weapons to leave our officers with condition effects as well! From Istanbul with love The team diligently worked on this project for two years. Those who know our previous titles, Doughlings: Arcade and Doughlings: Invasion are probably aware that we love timeless classics in gaming history. Developing a beat ’em up game was inevitable for the studio. We did our utmost best to create one that feels nostalgic yet fresh for the arcade veterans and newcomers. The game releases tomorrow, on August 19 for PS4 (and is playable on PS5). It features English voiceovers along with subtitles and UI in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. As Hero Concept, we hope you enjoy Mayhem Brawler to your heart’s content! Now go patrol the streets. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/z2GE-6ZwdiMView the full article

Hello, PlayStation fans! We just released our biggest Expansion yet to Marvel’s Avengers – War for Wakanda. It features Black Panther, our new playable Hero, a slew of dangerous new enemy types, and hours of new multiplayer content, but today we want to share a little bit about the story and offer some insight into how we crafted it. Just like our main campaign, War for Wakanda tells an original story set in our Marvel’s Avengers universe. T’Challa rules over the sovereign nation of Wakanda, a technologically advanced country with a stockpile of a rare meteoric alloy called Vibranium. When the nefarious Ulysses Klaue breaches Wakanda’s borders, T’Challa will have to confront his distrust of others and work alongside the Avengers to defeat his foe. When crafting this story, our narrative team (Narrative Director Nicole Martinez, Game Writer Hannah MacLeod, Game Writer Jessica Krause, and Narrative Designer Keano Raubun) reflected on Black Panther’s comic history in order to differentiate between the essential and non-essential elements of his persona and narrative. The death of T’Challa’s father T’Chaka, for example, is one of those essential beats that always happens in some form in Black Panther stories – much like Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben – and so that was an element we knew we had to maintain in our lore as well. Klaue’s origins are an example of an element we got to play with though. In the comics, he’s the son of a war criminal who enters Wakanda to steal technology. In War for Wakanda, we rewrote his origins in a way that opened the door to some exciting new combat scenarios for the game, including two new Villains and the addition of a variety of new enemy types. In our retelling, Klaue is still a sonic physicist like he is in the comics, allowing us to introduce enemies with sonic-powered weapons into the game. It also meant we could transform the human Ulysses Klaue into his sonic-monster alter ego, Klaw. Another little wrinkle we added to the lore was the inclusion of the infamous Crossbones as Klaue’s head lieutenant. The Crossbones fight is one of our exciting new villain encounters players get to experience, dealing with his impenetrable shield tech and his heavy assault weaponry. Like Klaue, we drew a lot of inspiration from the comics for our characterization of Shuri. We loved her youthfulness, her presence, and her ability to lead in these stories, and you’ll see these characteristics in our version as well. Shuri and T’Challa are at odds in War for Wakanda on how to deal with Klaue, and we think that conflict will make our take on these characters feel distinct from other incarnations. We think it’s fun to experience our favorite characters in new ways, which is why we spend so much time making each of our cast members feel distinct from their comic book and film incarnations rather than just copying and pasting their personas in other media into our game. Our version of T’Challa should feel distinct too. While the Black Panther from the films is new to the throne, War for Wakanda depicts a version of T’Challa who’s been leading for years. He exudes a surety and confidence that you don’t get to see in the film. His relationship to each of the Avengers is unique to our story as well. Internally, we place new Heroes on a “family tree” to help us nail down what kind of role they play in the Avengers’ family: Steve Rogers is the “dad;” Natasha and Kamala are “big and little sisters,” respectively; Thor is the “jock older brother,” etc. We wrote our Black Panther as “your best friend’s dad” – the kind of dad you wish were yours when you visit your best friend’s house. Fun and cool. To bring T’Challa and our other new War for Wakanda characters to life, we knew we’d need an A-list cast of voice talent. We wrote T’Challa with Christopher Judge (God of War) in mind for the role, but admittedly we didn’t think we’d ever get him onto the project. You don’t often get your number one choice in our business! So it was a delightful surprise when he signed on. We knew Judge could deliver the emotional weight of our script, particularly in scenes with Shuri who is voiced by another powerhouse, Erica Luttrell (Westworld). Shuri and T’Challa’s relationship is at the heart of War for Wakanda’s story, so finding actors such as Judge and Luttrell who could perform weightier, emotional scenes was critical in our search. It’s tricky to write a story that both honors the Black Panther ethos while also introducing original elements, but we think we’ve struck the perfect balance of old and new in our Expansion. The War for Wakanda Expansion adds to a game already packed with content including a total of over 25 hours of single-player story content across several campaigns, nine playable heroes, and endless multiplayer co-op action for up to four players. In addition, new modes and events are introduced regularly, and dozens of outfits inspired by Marvel comics and movies are available to customize players’ favorite Super Heroes. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/3hoqComEpnEView the full article

We’ve been thrilled by the incredibly positive feedback from the free public demo of Fracked which launched last month. On August 20 people can finally jump into the full Fracked experience (or from today, August 17, if you’ve pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition). So, grab your PlayStation Move controllers and get ready to take on this fast-paced action adventure, only on PlayStation VR. Fracked launches on August 20 as both a Standard Edition ($29.99 / €24.99 / £19.99) and a Deluxe Edition ($34.99 / €29.99 / £24.99). The Deluxe Edition provides players with exclusive digital rewards such as an artbook, soundtrack, and the unique Earth Defender equipment skins for you to enjoy! Tips to becoming the Action Hero Fracked provides the ultimate power fantasy of stepping into the shoes of the action hero. It’s inspired by classic action cinema, made possible by video games, and enhanced by the power of VR. Take on the legions of interdimensional foes known as The Fracked, with total freedom of movement, one-to-one cover-based combat, and an arsenal of interactive and powerful weapons. To celebrate launch week, let’s get into three key tips that’ll really help you kick crystalline butt this summer. 1. Use the environment to your advantage Just like any great action movie, you’re outnumbered and outgunned. You’re the first line of defence. Become the action hero. Save the planet. With a varied assortment of weapons, you’ll outsmart and outmanoeuvre the enemy. Using the environment to your advantage will be key to your success. We’ve implemented an immersive grabbable cover mechanic, which totally grounds the player in the world. If it’s grabbable, it’s cover. On their own, The Fracked can be tackled easily. But once they descend in number, you’ll need to use cover tactically to avoid the onslaught and press your advantage. Run from cover-to-cover, get the best angles on your opponents, and feel like the unstoppable hero of the story that you are. Just don’t get cocky. You’ll also have total freedom of movement at your disposal, with zip-lines allowing you to drop down on enemy positions. When the Fracked begin to swarm, you’re going to be thankful for these methods of escape and redirection that allow you to wrestle back control of the situation. 2. Knowing when to use fight or flight This fast-paced shooter has total freedom of movement. With a diverse range of traversal methods, coupled with intuitive one-to-one movement, you’ll be immersed into an action hero’s world that allows for speed, pace, and roleplay. Fracked is not on rails. It provides you with the functionality that you’d expect in a traditional first person shooter, including the ability to strafe and walk backwards, all done with intuitive controls that ensure that you have choice and options when the bullets start flying. Get amongst The Fracked, use your wits and your 360 degree movement to check all of your angles and chase them down. When the action heats up, look for cover, zip-lines, climbing points, and any other way out! Regroup, and get back in there. On the ski slopes, the action doesn’t stop, it just gets faster. Naturally tilt your head left or right to control your direction of movement. Use the variety of different routes down the mountainside to avoid or take on enemy pursuers and guard towers! The head-based tracking of movement is a simple but elegant solution when your hands are occupied during a firefight. 3. When to use your arsenal In Fracked, you have a diverse range of firearms to help you combat any scenario, from our core interactive weapons to the limited-use special weapons. The grenade launcher that can stagger and bring down the hulking brute known as The Blaster. Once he’s down, shoot away at his weak spot. The revolver is powerful enough to shoot through walls, perfect to use behind cover, and can keep the explosive Screamers at bay with one shot. You’ll have to be reactive to every given situation, combing the environment for that perfect addition to your arsenal. Be resourceful with what you have or search for what you need to succeed. Fracked’s striking game design choices ensure that fun is the priority. From an active reload system that doesn’t compromise on the game’s fast pace, to pulse-pumping on-ski shoot-outs as you outrun pursuing snowmobiles. Players will be treated to exciting combat scenarios worthy of the silver screen. Get ready to save the planet You embody the protagonist. An unshakeable reluctant hero. Calm and collected under pressure, he finds himself thrust into a fight for his life. Coupled with his ever-present sidekick, Rosalez, you must work together to overcome the explosive and otherworldly happenings in this remote mountain facility. From heart-in-your-mouth shootouts to nail-biting set pieces, the pace and stakes remain high throughout your time with Fracked. Whether you’re desperately climbing around a broken funicular carriage as it teeters across a chasm or clutching to the landing gear of a helicopter as you’re peppered with incoming fire, Fracked will take you on a journey with an impressive degree of scope, all done to a powerful, punchy, and eclectic soundtrack that remixes everything from 90s rock, house, and 50s orchestral pieces. Fracked launches on August 20 for those that haven’t pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition. We can’t wait for you to experience the action adventure of Fracked for yourself! Let us know what you’re most looking forward to in the comments below and please be sure to check out the Fracked Demo for yourself on the PlayStation Store. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/tcWhvEW7HyQView the full article

Recompile is available on August 19 on PlayStation 5! We hope that this next-gen optimized title will provide players with a unique experience that we have spent so long striving to create. An atmospheric explorative-platformer meets hacking adventure, Recompile features intense combat, tight 3D platforming, super-powered abilities, environmental logic-based hacking mechanics, and a unique stylized visual identity. Play Video In this game you’ll play as a sentient virus, a program created by the enigmatic Janus as you try to escape deletion whilst infiltrating the sprawling 3D virtual world of the Mainframe. Your end mission is unclear, but you know that you’ll have to hack, repair and dismantle various systems in order to benefit your creators and perhaps even contribute to saving humankind. You’ll discover the origins of the Hypervisor, the AI antagonist hell-bent on halting your progress at every opportunity, and eventually you will unravel the true purpose of the mysterious Mainframe. The Mainframe: A retro futuristic virtual world The landscape of the Mainframe is completely open and explorable. We’ve crafted a small yet fully-realized environment bursting with character and details. There are multiple biomes, each representing a single function of the computer system you’ve been tasked to infiltrate. From the heavily armed security fortifications of Tet to the authoritarian engineered world of Hex, each location requires different skills and strategies to master. To create the Mainframe we combined stylized 3D environment assets with innovative use of shaders and technical art, giving Recompile a striking art style to immerse players on a whole new level. The Program Designing Recompile’s protagonist was one of the many happy accidents that arose during the game’s prototyping phase. Because the character is a computer virus, we wanted something a little different to the traditional hero design. We also didn’t have a dedicated character artist at the time, but one of the core team members is a VFX and animation specialist. Our idea was to make the character consist entirely of animated particles, and so we ended up creating a voxel-based particle rendering system, to represent the player being made of code and pure energy. The accompanying videos and gifs went viral on social media, and so the design stuck, and it became an important part of Recompile’s iconic visual style. PhiOS One of the biggest features of the game and one I’m personally the most proud of is our custom UI rendering system, built completely from scratch. A text based “ASCII” framework, PhiOS gives us the ability to create retro futuristic 80’s style command line terminal interfaces, but with modern design sensibilities. This kind of animated “Hollywood” user interface I feel is one that is quintessentially Recompile. The journey to Recompile The project now known as Recompile has actually been through multiple iterations and prototypes over the years. I’ve always known that I wanted to make a game based inside a computer, with gated, explorative platformer mechanics, but through experimentation this basic idea has taken on many forms: Fort Mainframe 2015 Prototype 1 – A turn-based puzzle/strategy game Fort Mainframe 2016 Prototype 2 – An faux-isometric action platformer Fort Mainframe 2017 Prototype 3 – A “return to basics” 3D platformer with rudimentary placeholder cube graphics, designed to inspire future team members to “fill in the missing gaps” Unity and HDRP Finally, I want to give a nod to one of the most important game development technologies of the generation, and without it Recompile could absolutely not exist. Unity has given us great power in developing this ambitious title, and the recent upgrade to its rendering system in the form of HDRP (High Definition Rendering Pipeline) has been a total lifesaver for Phigames, giving us a clear route to export to powerful next-generation consoles such as the PS5. We hope that you are as excited to play the game as we were making it. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and good luck with the hack! http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/4mcjM4I79AgView the full article

Bonjour, I’m Jérôme from 1P2P Studio, an indie studio based in the north of France. Today, I’m happy to announce that our first game, Young Souls, is coming to PS4 this fall! To celebrate, we put together this PS Blog post to give you some insights into the game and the bosses you’ll fight. Play Video Young Souls and boss fights With Young Souls, our goal from day one was to make boss fights the core of the game experience. Once you’re all geared up, you’ll face goblin warriors, ninjas, giant spiders, and 30-foot trolls. The gameplay was partly inspired by games straight out of the old-school, 2D beat ’em up genre and partly by our personal influences, which lean towards 3D beat ’em ups and more modern games. Probably the best example of the latter’s influence is the fast-paced gameplay we’ve infused into Young Souls; things definitely move quicker than the classic titles, which tend to be more deliberate in nature (but no less captivating!) Creating enemies Over the course of the game, you’ll face a bunch of mid-bosses whose main role is to introduce a new enemy behaviour or a weapon/accessory that the player collects and gets to use once the mid-boss is defeated. Defeat Mohm, a spooky giant spider, and you’ll be able to fight with its mandibles that can spawn friendly poisonous spiders – the perfect weapon to deal with an enemy crowd. The main bosses are a key part of the story, and so these confrontations constitute recognizable peaks in both the story and the gameplay. Gameplay-wise, the main bosses represent true challenges to your progression through Young Souls, testing your mastery of the game’s combat system by unleashing a combination of different attacks that you’ll need to defend against and counter. A balance between art-direction freedom and gameplay For the art direction, we worked with Xavier Houssin, one of our favourite character designers in the business. He designed all of the characters in Young Souls, including (obviously) all of the bosses – with which we took two totally different approaches regarding design. For the mid-bosses, the guidelines for Xavier were very game design focused, with the art direction being influenced by the gameplay. This meant that Xavier worked off of a very ‘functional’ description of each monster and an estimation of its size. A gigantic but slow mecha is the perfect way to introduce you to bombs or a stealthy assassin is a great enemy to learn how to parry and counter-attack. However, for the main bosses this approach was reversed: Xavier worked off of the story guide and a ‘screenplay sheet’ we created. This ensured that the gameplay wouldn’t interfere with his ability to shape the characters to his own vision. For Kah-Kon, Xavier wanted him to have a massive Morgenstern for a weapon. Conveying the weight of such a massive weapon was tricky but given how important this boss is, we just had to pull this animation off! Our biggest challenge: designing monsters Designing the bosses in Young Souls was no small task, but in the end it was worth it because the game gives a lot of freedom to the player. You’ll discover all kinds of weapons and accessories, each with their own uses and effects: magma swords, gladiator shield, freezing blades, anti-poison armor, XP-boosting Sneakers or a grappling hook….we’ve got you covered. Since the bosses have to defend themselves against a variety of attacks (especially when you can play the game in co-op with another player), we made a point of personalizing each boss with multiple behaviours. The destructive Fazmore can either attack you with lasers and fireballs so long range attacks are definitely advised… but if you’re playing it too safe, he’ll teleport right in front of you and give you a punch you’ll never forget. Of course, we also made sure to give each boss its own weak spots as well as some resists to certain elementary attacks or accessories. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that once you get the hang of the game, you’ll discover some awesomely powerful combos that bring a huge advantage against certain types of enemies. Understanding and learning the bosses’ behaviours Throughout the development of Young Souls, our goal was to challenge players via a rapid evolution of the bosses’ skills during each encounter. To achieve this, we created a ‘life system’ for the bosses that allowed us to make each fight unique. Every time a ‘life’ is taken from a boss, its behaviour evolves. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy increasingly satisfying gameplay runs; every time you defeat a boss, a new milestone is reached and you become even more engaged in measuring your progression from one run to the next. Thanks a lot for reading this PS Blog post! We’ll see you soon in the Young Souls boss arenas – very soon in fact, since the game will be available this fall on PlayStation 4. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/wg6c710N8uQView the full article

The War for Wakanda Expansion is the next free update to our game, and it’s our biggest one yet. Whether you’re new to Marvel’s Avengers or one of our veteran players with multiple max-level heroes, there’s never been a better time to play. Let’s dive into everything that comes in the Expansion. The War for Wakanda We know how important story is to you all, so we worked incredibly hard to create for you an epic Black Panther narrative that adds hours of new cinematic story content to the game. War for Wakanda is an original story set in our Marvel’s Avengers universe. The Expansion picks up years after the events of A-Day — T’Challa rules over Wakanda, and the country’s borders are closed to everyone… until the devious Ulysses Klaw finds a way in. When Klaw invades the country in efforts to harvest its wealth of Vibranium, T’Challa has to team up with outsiders – the Avengers – in order to protect his home. Our team collaborated with Black Panther comics writer Evan Narcisse in crafting our original story. Narcisse is known for the popular “Rise of the Black Panther” comic run! Enter: Black Panther Black Panther is our new playable character in War for Wakanda, and his martial arts-inspired playstyle with feel totally different from the other Avengers on our roster. Some of his moves include: Pounce, which allows him to leap at and grapple-attack enemies; Percussive Blast, which drains your Intrinsic Meter with a blast of stored up kinetic energy; and Devastating Daggers, which is a ranged attack that allows you to do increased damage to enemies that are embedded with your daggers. T’Challa’s Assault Heroic is King’s Mercy, which sees him summoning a Vibranium spear and hurling it at hapless foes. His Support Heroic is Kimoyo Beads, which hover around the area to support allies or stun enemies. Finally, his Ultimate Heroic leans into the spiritual side of his character, summoning a spectral projection of the panther goddess Bast to grant him a major damage buff. The Enemies of Wakanda War for Wakanda introduces a variety of new enemy types, including Vibranium-armored mercenaries and grunts armed with Sonic-powered weapons. Klaw also commands an army of Crawlers both big and small. If you love our Villain Sectors, the Expansion includes two new fights against Klaw in his comic book-inspired sonic form, as well as a fight against his head lieutenant: Crossbones. The Wakandan Jungle is a dangerous place! The Jungles of Wakanda Our Expansion introduces an entirely new (and massive) biome for you to explore. The Wakandan Jungle is more treacherous than previous biomes. There are pitfalls you’ll have to avoid, defense weapons you’ll have to dodge, and light puzzles in ancient structures you’ll need to solve to progress in certain areas. You’ll get to explore a new Outpost, too: Birnin Zana, the capital city of Wakanda, where you’ll run into familiar faces like Shuri and Okoye. An All-Star Cast We pulled in more amazing vocal talent for War for Wakanda. Chris Judge will play T’Challa, Debra Wilson (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) will play Okoye, Erica Luttrell (Westworld) will play Shuri, Dave Fennoy (The Walking Dead video games) will play Zawavari, and Steve Blum (Star Wars Rebels) will play Ulysses Klaue. Our actors worked closely with Beth McGuire, the vocal coach behind the accent in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. Beth worked with each actor over multiple VO sessions to ensure that their Wakandan accents were properly delivered. UI Updates Lastly, the War for Wakanda Expansion comes with a major overhaul of our user interface, putting all of the character tabs on one easy-to-navigate page. This change comes out of feedback from the community, and it will allow you to gear up and get back into the game faster than before. There’s never been a better time to jump into Marvel’s Avengers. The War for Wakanda expansion adds to a game already packed with content including a total of over 25 hours of single-player story content across several campaigns, nine playable heroes, and endless multiplayer co-op action for up to four players. In addition, new modes and events are introduced regularly, and dozens of outfits inspired by Marvel comics and films are available to customize players’ favorite Super Heroes. Go to social and let us know your thoughts when War for Wakanda launches tomorrow. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/8XsB2APcCGUView the full article

Tandem: A Tales of Shadows is an original puzzle platformer game featuring around 45 levels where players will have to alternate between two characters: Emma (top-down view) and Fenton (side view). Players will have to solve puzzles by using Emma and Fenton’s unique abilities and perspectives. Together they’ll face a variety of obstacles and enemies such as bosses that stand in their way. The unique thing about our game is a feature of two controllable protagonists. We thought that controlling two characters, each with their own personality and characteristics, is a fun, creative exercise for the player. It’s satisfying, especially as players enter later stages. We designed the game with Sherlock Holmes and Watson in mind. They rely on each other to solve investigations. We were fascinated by the late 19th century, which was one of the most creative and innovative periods in history. We thought the Victorian period was appropriate for our game, but we didn’t want to include steampunk elements. Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is not a historical game, but we tried to faithfully recreate every detail. We also fully assume the casual side of the game which often provokes the wonder of childhood but with a strong Burtonian influence! As its name implies, the game’s art direction plays a lot with the chiaroscuro (the importance of lights and shadows), so we also drew inspiration from the golden age of Dutch paintings. The strategy between the two characters is in two dimensions. The player controls Emma in a top-down view — and thanks to her lantern, it lights the scene and forecasts shadows. When it comes to Fenton, the player controls him on a side-scroller view and has the power to walk on the shadows projected by his friend’s Emma lantern. In the first universe, the shadows on which Fenton can walk are mainly generated by scene assets and simple objects that Emma can move. As the player discovers the different universes, new shadow mechanics will be proposed. Emma operates a system of transparent pipes with valves and branches in order to cast shadows. Emma attracts enemies with a bait to eat each other and grow up to cast shadows large enough to allow Fenton to walk. Controlling two characters who each have their own personality and characteristics is very enjoyable and creative for the player. The further you advance in the game, the more pronounced the collaborative aspect between the two characters becomes and contributes to the progressive enrichment of the experience. It is also a reference to Sherlock Holmes and Watson: one needs the other to solve their cases. We hope you enjoy discovering our work on Tandem: A Tale of Shadows which will be available this fall on October 21 on PlayStation 4. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/wTnVSjlHJb8View the full article

After more than two decades, the legacy of the Dark Wanderer and the demonic burden he bears is making a resurgence in the realms of humanity. Blizzard Entertainment’s resurrection of the acclaimed action role-playing game that defined a genre is nearly here! For the first time, console players who pre-order Diablo II: Resurrected will be able to experience first-hand the remastered epic of Diablo II with Early Access to the Open Beta, now live on PS5 and PS4. Diablo II’s legacy will continue on new platforms over 20 years after its original release on PC in 2000. New players and veterans will be able to experience this iconic chapter of the Eternal Conflict through the extraordinary capabilities of the PlayStation consoles and DualShock 4 controller on PS4 and DualSense wireless controller on PS5. Bringing the classic keyboard-and-mouse gameplay to a controller was a unique challenge. To illustrate the Diablo II: Resurrected team’s approach to adapting the feel and controls to PlayStation controllers, we invited Design Director Robert Gallerani to share his insights. When we set out designing the controller control scheme, we broke down the work into a handful of categories. Each of these were core considerations we wanted to be mindful of as we brought Diablo II: Resurrected to console players. With a keyboard and mouse, the player acts as an “eye in the sky” telling their character what to do and where to go by clicking somewhere. Do you perform a ranged ability on a monster? Do you walk over to a chest and open it? Perhaps you open a door? With the mouse, the players’ primary input is a click that conveys aiming or a specific ability or action. The game then guides the character to the place where it can perform the action, finding a path for you. On a controller, however, the player is more directly acting as their avatar. This starts to have serious ramifications at many levels—but to our players, it all just needs “to work.” Play Video Watch the iconic intro cinematic, remastered in Diablo II: Resurrected Tweaking the Movement On a controller, movement is tied to the analog stick. This means that the player, and not the game, is directing the character where to go. To achieve this, we turned off the game’s pathfinding. However, now players can travel to places the game would never have guided you before. For example, a player can try and run into a wall or move against collision objects. This also makes it easier to evade oncoming attacks from adversaries. In addition to considering where you go, you also need to determine how fast you go. Diablo II has a stamina system. This means that there are two modes of travel: walking and running. When your stamina depletes, you can no longer run. We needed to have this system work in parallel with players’ expectations that when you push the analog stick a little, you move a small amount, and when you push it all the way, you move at top speed. We tried having stick deflection alone drive the player’s speed, but this made it too hard to “just walk.” Walking gives your character better stats in the game, so it was important we made it easy for players to control this. We settled on a toggle in the end, because it preserved the conscious decision of choosing to walk instead of run. This was vital when it comes to picking up items, but more on that later. Finding the Targets The next big difference when not having a mouse is probably the most obvious. You have no cursor, your means to tell the game what to attack. However, with a thumb stick on the controller, we are always scanning the playfield with a large cone, and prioritizing targets at many levels—monsters, items, objects you can interact with, other players, your corpse, and so on—and the priorities are tuned per class. So, for example, a Necromancer will tend to prioritize corpses more than other classes do. We experimented with showing a player all the different targeting options, but it became information overload. We settled on just showing the player their primary target. So even though we don’t show a corpse being highlighted, we are selecting the closest one should the player trigger an ability that requires a corpse. Looting with Ease The only thing as important as killing monsters in Diablo II is looting them once they are dead. The way players loot with keyboard and mouse is typically to hold a key to see the items’ label, and then they would click on the name. To some players, holding a button on a controller can be uncomfortable, so we removed the need to hold down the item label button (although it is still present). When using the controller, item names are shown based on time and distance to the player. This means that if an item is near a player, it will always show. And when an item drops, its name will stay on screen for a short period of time. The next challenge was to determine how a player picks the item up. With a controller, it just made sense to have the player walk over to the item. This proved quite tricky when a monster would explode into a loot pinata, but the player only wanted that one specific item. So, in the end, we added the ability for players to walk very slow and stop in between different items on the ground so that they could loot the specific item they wanted, making the looting experience on console far more accessible. Triggering the Abilities Here we knew we had to meet Diablo III players’ expectations. In the original Diablo II, a player has two buttons: left and right mouse click. To gain access to any number of other abilities, players use hotkeys to quickly remap these two buttons. This is a very roundabout way to use abilities. With a controller, we changed this to not remap, but to have buttons directly trigger the abilities. We then display these abilities very similarly to Diablo III, in a “tray” on the bottom of the screen. However, given that players can have a significant number of abilities at any given time, we allow players to hold the left trigger to provide the player with access to another six slots, effectively giving players 12 slots to quickly launch any abilities. Balancing the Classic A frequent challenge with the controller is that we have far fewer buttons on a controller than a keyboard, so we spend a lot of time weighing the trade-offs of button mappings and ensuring the most essential abilities are on the easiest-to-reach buttons. Based on the feedback from the Technical Alpha (from PC controller players), we feel we’ve taken controller support in a solid direction that we hope meets players’ expectations. We are still polishing edge cases, but we think we have struck the right balance between a modern feel and preserving the classic mechanics. –Robert Gallerani, Design Director As Robert noted, we got a lot of excellent feedback from PC players who used controllers throughout the Technical Alpha. That insight helped us mold, iterate on, and tune the controller controls in a fashion that feels comfortable for the player and emulates the authentic journey of playing Diablo II. We can’t wait to introduce opportunities for PlayStation players to dive into Diablo II: Resurrected. In addition to getting Early Access to the Open Beta which begins on August 13 at 10am PT, players who pre-order Diablo II: Resurrected will get the Heritage of Arreat transmog set for Diablo III (shown above), while those who pre-order the Diablo Prime Evil Collection will loot a few additional in-game goodies, including the Hatred’s Grasp Wings cosmetic, Mephisto Pet. Rally your friends. The upcoming Early Access* test will have multiplayer enabled, allowing up to eight players to play cooperatively in Act I: The Sightless Eye and Act II: The Secret of the Vizjerei. Players will be able to choose from five of Diablo II’s seven unique classes to experience—the Amazon, Barbarian, Druid, Paladin, and Sorceress; each with highly customizable builds and gear options for players to explore throughout the test. Unable to participate in Early Access? No worries. On August 20 at 10:00 a.m. PDT, the Open Beta* weekend will kick-off. All the players across the PlayStation community will be able to freely download the Diablo II: Resurrected Open Beta and confront the minions of the Burning Hells (playable content is the same as the Early Access). Play Video Check out the remastered Act 2 cinematic above. Truly, there isn’t a better time to be a Diablo fan. Whether you’re new to this game or a longtime fan itching to relive this timeless classic, the gates of Hell are opened to you. We’re thrilled to share Diablo II: Resurrected with you and hope you’ll join us in the Early Access and Open Beta in the lead up to launch on September 23. We’d love to see your feedback and impressions of this gameplay experience before our launch. *PlayStation Plus is not required during Early Access or the Open Beta, but will be required to access multiplayer features at launch on PlayStation systems. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/40m2R7pM6sUView the full article

In our previous PS Blog post, we shared the design philosophy and creative process behind Rayton, the protagonist of F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch. Today, we will talk about his combat skills and how we designed a satisfying, yet elegant, combo system for players to enjoy. At the beginning, we made it clear that the combat system in F.I.S.T. should be designed to provide an arcade-style action experience. Apart from our crazy love for the arcade scene when we were young, the characteristics of arcade games are also fascinating: those combat systems are easy to understand and become confident with. Players can have fun in these games very quickly. This is the kind of game experience we want our players to have in F.I.S.T. In our initial design, combat involved a single attack button. Press and hold to charge; press the button to launch combo skills; when the enemy’s HP is reduced to a certain value, press the button to launch an Execution. One button covered three key attacks: a powerful strike at the battle’s start, a set of continuous attacks during, and a gorgeous Execution at its end. The functions and visual effects worked as one, giving the sensation of an arcade experience. We were very satisfied with it. We spent more than two months producing a demo based on this system. Feedback from players who tried the demo at expos was positive, which convinced us that we are heading in the right direction. The contradiction between streamlined combat and rich stages Then, we started formal development. We defined F.I.S.T. as an easy-to-operate action game with more than 10 hours of main story playtime, an expansive and seamless map, and a large number of exploration elements. However, after completing the first stage, with more and more content and a longer overall playtime added in, the original combat system began to show some disadvantages. The original three-stage combat experience involves charge, attacks, and Execution. Charge attacks take time to prepare, which is difficult when combat encounters happen suddenly. Execution is essentially a performance with little input beyond the initial activation. As a result, players have to press the same button again and again for combo attacks most of the time during the battle. Such a combat system is a reasonable design for a 15-minute demo, but not quite as suitable for a game that lasts a few hours. It became boring. Considerations while designing combo attacks After rethinking the player experience when performing combo attacks, we decided to add one button into the combat system. The two attack buttons are to perform light attack and heavy attacks. Players will need to memorize combos, such as L(ight)L(Light)H(eavy), LHL, HLH to perform different skills. But we don’t want to give up our original intention of developing an arcade-styled action game. If it’s necessary to memorize combos, how could we simplify it as much as possible? After several brainstorms, we developed the following rules: Each combo must begin with a light attack The maximum number of hits in a combo is 5 No light attacks after a heavy attack Use as few buttons as possible With these rules, we restrict combo skills to the following seven: LH, LLL, LLH, LHH, LLHH, LLLH, LLLHH Seem hard to remember? In fact, the combos are easy to perform in F.I.S.T. First, you need to perform an A action. If you want to launch combo skills, perform a B action. This combo system satisfied our need to develop a combat system that is simple but interesting. Starting with a light attack and ending with a heavy attack, the combo system provides an intensifying battle process. In design language and picture performance, we also realized a certain consistency with this intensifying trend. In addition, given that there are three weapons in the game, we divide some moves with similar effects into a unified operation mode. For example, for all the three weapons, AB knocks the enemy into the air. Players don’t have to memorize different air launchers for each weapon. Fine-tuning a balanced combat system As the development goes on, besides combo skills, we added more battle operations such as SP skill, throw skill, special skills, weapon switching, jump, dash, and cancel. Players will have more choices in combat. However, throughout development, we have been doing “addition” and “subtraction” at the same time for every battle system. We would like players to have more moves in battle, but we also wanted those moves to be understood and handled as easily as possible. The ultimate goal is to let our players launch those cool moves in a relatively simple way as if they were in the arcade hall. F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch will be released on PS5 and PS4 on September 7, but you can pre-order at PlayStation Store now. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/DKxCyAI4g7QView the full article

Bonjour, this is Cyrille from Dotemu! I’m the executive producer of Windjammers 2. You may be familiar with other works of ours, such as Streets of Rage 4 (released last year) and the port of the original Windjammers for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2017. We are a small team here in Paris and retro is our motto. Ever since our re-release of the first Windjammers game, we’ve been anxious to do a sequel. In fact, Windjammers 2 is the first game that we’re developing 100% in-house! We can’t wait for you to try it yourselves. More on that in a bit… …But first, I’m happy to confirm that the game will be released on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5! The PlayStation community was extremely supportive of the first game, so bringing the sequel to PS4 and PS5 was a no-brainer. Development is going well, and we wanted to provide gamers with a sneak-peek before our launch later this year. So get your controllers ready, because from August 11 until August 22 we’re hosting an open Beta for Windjammers 2 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The open Beta will be free and available for all – no PlayStation Plus subscription is required. Also, Windjammers 2 will offer cross-play between PlayStation consoles, so you’ll face players from both platforms. It’ll be a blast! What is Windjammers? Windjammers is a sports arcade game where you have to shoot a disc into your opponent’s goal to win. It’s fast-paced and highly addictive…think of it as Street Fighter meets Pong. And we’re pulling out all the stops to ensure that Windjammers 2 is even more exciting and engaging than the arcade classic. Here’s a quick tutorial that explains how to play Windjammers 2. We’ve asked an old friend to lend a hand with this – none other than the legendary Windjammers champion of the United States. The one…The only…Gary Scott! Play Video Open beta content During the Beta, you can demo four characters: Steve Miller (United Kingdom) Clever and agile, Steve excels at executing split-second reversals and tricky curved shots. Gary Scott (United States) The American heavyweight may be slow, but he’s one of the game’s most powerful characters. And I have to admit, he’s also the Dotemu team’s favorite. Loris Biaggi (Italy) Swift, strong, versatile…this well-balanced champion hasn’t lost a step. Sophie De Lys (France) We just had to add a French character, right? But attention: she’s fast and furious. Each character has a unique balance of power and speed – find the one that best fits your playstyle! More characters are included in the full game, with even crazier tricks and throws. The Beta also features four stages: Beach: a narrow court that facilitates fast games and quick throws. Ring: a wide stage perfect for running your opponent ragged. Stadium: this court boasts a 5-point zone that grows larger when a player scores multiple times in a row. A great way to catch-up! Rooftop: a regular court, except for the bumpers that change the disc’s direction when they’re hit. Careful, they’re as diabolical as they sound! Windjammers 2 is not only fun and exciting, it’s also competitive – which is why the open Beta will feature ranked matches. We want to build a global community around the game and we know that international competitions are essential. Some of the features we’ve cooked up for the full game will remain a secret for now, but don’t worry – you’ll get your fair share of surprises later on, I can tell you that much. Windjammers 2 will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 later this year. In the meantime, the Dotemu team looks forward to throwing some discs with you when the Beta launches August 11 to August 22. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/L0i5cprmkWYView the full article

DreamsCom, our in-game convention for Dreams content creators made a return this year, bigger than ever! It’s an entire expo, made in Dreams, featuring a show floor with over 40 halls and 250+interactive booths from nearly 300 unique creators. There were demos to play, new titles announced and so much more from the amazing Dreams community – and we can’t get enough of the creativity on display. It’s been a challenge picking a handful of booths to showcase in this blog, but the following 13 booths really captured what’s possible at DreamsCom, so we asked the creators to tell us about their process: Made In Dreams Podcast – Hall #47 LucidNebulaGames: The Made in Dreams Podcast is community-based, so it was only fitting to use community assets from the Dreamiverse. I loved searching through assets and placing them all together to create a talk show style booth that represents our show and its community. Magma-Monsta’s Booth – Hall #40 Magma-Monsta: I kept my booth fairly plain in color to create a strong contrast to the colorful DreamsCom. With the voiceover coming from the animatronic character, I tried to underline the whole concept of the booth. My goal was to question the concept of an expo in a game like Dreams – just for fun. I love games that break the fourth wall. DreamsCom is very special to me, because it shows the power of the Dreams community. It offers every creator the possibility to express their work in a really cool and unique way. ApesOnFire’s Booth – Hall #8 ApesOnFire: Without the Dreams community, I would have had no booth for DreamsCom. Brought to life with the help of MrCaseyJones and AndymationB, I was able to express my creativity, and encourage new members of the community to stop by my channel and share their creations! My favourite part about participating in DreamsCom21 is the opportunity to discover new creators! Deadzone: Aberration – Hall #47 NauticalSquatch: I used my booth to promote my upcoming FPS game, Deadzone: Aberration. I wanted it to look like the cover of a pulpy sci-fi novel, and pay homage to the classic horror book series, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”. The best part about participating in Dreamscom as a creator is being given a platform to show what you’ve been working on – then seeing that there are people, including Media Molecule, that care and are excited about the work you’ve put your time and love into. Deh Plushies – Hall #9 YahDeh: This mini Deh Plushies shop is filled with cute, cuddly plushie toys. It now comes with a café and a selection of books written by fellow Dreamers. Take photos with your favorite Foodimals like pancake shark, candy narwhal, and melon bread turtle. My favorite part of participating in DreamsCom was simply being able to contribute to the show floor and see how the amazing community has come together yet again to showcase the potential of Dreams. DreamsFest 2021 – Hall #46 beardofcats88: DreamsFest is a music festival event in Dreams so our team thought it would only be appropriate to build a small rock show performance for our booth complete with lights, music and a DJ. My favorite part of DreamsCom21 was all of the interactive booths – oooDorienooo’s 3 mini game booth was mind blowing. I also loved being able to compare DreamsCom21 to last year’s event. It’s clear to see that Dreams is growing stronger all the time, and it’s not going anywhere! SootyPinions’ Art & Assets – Hall #14 I wanted to make a little green space. I knew there would be so many logic marvels and that’s never been my forte, but a small moment under trees might be nice amongst the excitement, and that’s what I’m good at! Everyone has a signature – mine happens to be leafy! My favourite part of DreamsCom is being able to explore how inventive people are given the same space and limitations. Porto – Hall #14 Cubixphere: The large display announcing the development of Porto hints at the world of the upcoming game. Each letter was sculpted, using a text gadget as a guide. To the left, stands the main character who stands as an animatronic in the booth. It happily cycles through different animations greeting visitors. Participating in the DreamsCom stream and announcing my new project was incredibly fun and exciting! Pet Cafe Kiosk – Hall #41 Mezzyartiist: When I thought about making a Pet Cafe booth, I wanted to include some elements that didn’t make it in the final game, like the giraffe and the little hamster, so it was fun finally getting to draw them how they would appear in-game! I definitely enjoyed and embraced the wackiness of the event! Lou Moves In – Hall #21 Byvsen: The best part of my booth is that you can talk to [my character] Lou. It’s a fun way to give players information about the project, as well as getting to know Lou a bit more! It was quite challenging to squeeze this feature into the booth, but it was worth it. My favorite bit about participating in DreamsCom is to finally get to see what people think about my project so far – it really motivates me to continue working on it! The Orion Trail – Hall #27 donut_mutt & Ghostfruit64: We presented our booth as a travel agency for our game The Orion Trail’s pervasive mega-corporation, Hyperion Galactic. Retro-futuristic posters, displays, and a grainy broadcast voice promise players a safe journey to the new world, free from the other-worldly threats. Players can get a glimpse of the journey ahead by believing the very opposite of whatever Hyperion has to say. Being involved in DreamsCom is like being invited to the best party in the world for indie game devs! Topher Thebes & The Enchanted Crystal: Remastered – Hall #6 VerbalCreative: I wanted my booth to be interactive while promoting my latest project. Using assets from Topher Thebes and the Enchanted Crystal: Remastered, I came up with the idea to have a hide and seek game with Topher. This allowed my son to help, as he is the voice of Topher in the booth and in game. Participating in DreamsCom is such an amazing way to showcase your work, but my favorite part is discovering the rest of the community’s amazing talents! Pig Detective and the Beast of Boffington – Hall #25 Team Pig Detective: Although the Pig Detective booth features a very spooky mini-game by DirtyHarolds, a photo-point lovingly drawn by Andymationb and ReddishBoat in a pineapple costume, it is in fact only a vehicle for the secret password that treated DreamsCom visitors to an exclusive preview of the demo to the upcoming game Pig Detective and the Beast of Boffington. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/cvfzvNUkICYView the full article

The remote villages and their surroundings are home to folk and beast alike, and among them lurks the unseen: spirits, demons, ancient creatures, and many other supernatural beings. Only the Knowers – witches and wizards – know how to defeat or subdue them to service. In Black Book, out tomorrow on PlayStation 4, you play as Vasilisa, a peasant girl who was given an ancient artifact by her grandpa – the Black Book. With it, Vasilisa turns to witchery in order to break the seals of the Black Book, for it is said that doing so may grant any wish. There is nothing more she wants than to bring her deceased beloved back from the dead. During your journeys through her homeland, Cherdyn, you will encounter numerous magical creatures, each a formidable foe that requires a unique approach and zagovors (spell combinations) in order to defeat… Leshy Ancient keepers of the forest, it is said that leshys live for thousands of years and can take any form, animal or human. Leshys jealously guard the forest they claim as their own. Everyone who passes through the leshy’s forest must ask for permission, or face dire consequences. A leshy can cast powerful curses and a Knower would do well to prepare with certain herbs against them. Rusalka Rusalkas are akin to mermaids but have legs instead of a fishtail. They are cunning and beautiful, they hunt their prey with ease by hypnotizing it and strangling it slowly. Rusalkas can call upon her entranced allies to aid her in battle. Werewolf Werewolves are humans who stayed under a powerful changeling spell too long to return to their human form. They almost always hunt in a pack and prove to be fearsome foes, with damage attacks capable of cleaving people in half. Take care to have ample defenses against such an enemy ahead of time. Ikota A parasitic demon that crawls inside the unsuspecting person and slowly possesses them, tormenting the victim with convulsions, pain, and involuntary actions. The possessed person cannot rest and is often cast out of the community. To defeat an Ikota, the Knower should take care to target the demon when it crawls out of its host, otherwise the victim may perish as well. Bannitsa Bannitsa is a common but powerful demon that resides in a banya (or sauna), under the stove. Bannitsa surrounds herself with banniks, hot lumps of coal that shoot red-hot embers and otherwise look to “cleanse” the intruder of its grease and filth, usually by skinning the person alive. Demons that cleanse all positive and negative effects from you will be hard to deal with unless you come prepared knowing this. Vodyanoi Vodyanois are ancient spirits of water. Much like leshys that are masters of forests, vodyanois command lakes and rivers that they claim as their kingdom. Rusalkas, drowners, and other creatures or undead serve the vodyanoi that rules the area. These spirits love to strike a bargain though you must take to know what they offer because they love to trick even more. Eretnik If a koldun (a wizard) dies before passing his demon flock upon his successor, they torment his soul and prevent him from passing from this world. When that happens, the corpse becomes a terrible undead creature, full of malice and hatred. These undead beings suck the soul out of their victims, so one would be wise to prepare to counter that with blessings and other certain spells. These and many other mystical creatures you will meet during Vasilisa’s journey through Cherdyn, in our realm and that beyond it. Every enemy has its unique set of abilities that requires a thoughtful approach and just the right deck of cards. Discover new spells during your playthrough, build the perfect hand for each particular enemy (boss or otherwise) and break the seals of the Black Book to make your sincerest wish come true! See you in Cherdyn, and stay safe. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/18rwf6lDErUView the full article

Hello! I’m thrilled to share with you that Arashi: Castles of Sin launches exclusively on PlayStation VR tomorrow, August 10. In Arashi: Castles of Sin, assume the role of Kenshiro, an elite shinobi assassin. With an arsenal of feudal weapons and your wolf companion, Haru, exact vengeance against ruthless bandits who have terrorized the countryside and claimed castles across feudal Japan as their own. One of the keys to making this game was to stay small, scrappy, and flexible. We kept our approach as DIY as possible by using state-of-the-art mocap tools like an inertial motion capture suit for full body capture, mocap gloves for finger capture, and an app that captures high quality facial motion. We captured this all on a sub-$1,000 laptop, proving it can be done without huge, expensive workstations. Play Video By having these tools on hand, we were able to have a mobile mocap studio capable of shooting at a quality that would usually require a mocap stage, a dozen personnel, and hundreds of thousands of dollars of hardware and equipment – all with a three-person team of Forrest Söderlind, Patrick Jandro, and myself from our office last summer. To provide the motion capture for the combatants you’ll fight we worked with Master Russell McCartney, a world record holder in Japanese swordplay. As our Creative Director Tom Doyle likes to say, “you won’t simply be fighting against some sword-wielding bad guy; you’re actually facing one of the greatest swordsmen alive.” Your katana isn’t your only weapon though- it’s only one of ten different weapons in Arashi. Meaningful player choices and expressive play are paramount to our design director, Peter Carlson, so we made sure each weapon has its own strengths and drawbacks which enable players to tackle challenges in the play style of their choice. Our team was passionate about presenting this story entirely in Japanese with subtitles. We have a deep love and appreciation for Japanese cinema of the 40s and 50s and wanted to transport the player right into their own personal Criterion Collection film. We felt it was important to find a way to represent cultural mannerisms specific to Japan. Our solution: send a mobile phone all the way around the world to Japan, set up a tripod, and hit record on capture software while our Japanese voice actors performed. As excited as we were about it, presenting the entire game in Japanese brought about an interesting challenge as neither of our animators are Japanese speakers. Luckily, our 3D Art Lead Louis Lu and his wife are both fluent and helped make the lip syncing and subtitles as cohesive as possible. There was still plenty of work from there and Forrest and Pat say this was one of the most complex and rewarding experiences for them on this project. To give you a peek into one part of the process, we whipped up this video of Ayane, Kenshiro’s cousin and guide. We wanted Haru to not just be a powerful weapon, but also your companion. To capture the spirit of Haru, we took a field trip to a wildlife sanctuary, Predators of the Heart, and had an amazing day studying and playing with the wolves. Haru was one part of our process that was a little less DIY. Our plan was to be at a mocap studio and shoot animation for her, but due to pandemic reasons that was a bust. We called up our friends at Beyond Capture in Vancouver, Canada, who coordinated with us for a remote capture of four German Shepherds, each with a different role: neutral, aggressive, cinematic, and playful. In all our careers, doing a remote quadruped shoot was completely unprecedented and a massive undertaking, but we’re so happy with Haru. Oh, and can you pet the dog? Yep. You can pet the dog. Well, wolf. When I’m playing Arashi, I feel like a stealthy, strategic ninja assassin in a playground with all my awesome toys. I laughed out loud with joy the first time I took on two enemies, fighting one with my katana and the other with my tanto. One of my favorite things is to drop a mine near a bunch of enemies and command Haru to distract them, luring them right into my trap. Boom! Our team is so excited for you to play starting tomorrow, August 10. We can’t wait to hear about your adventures in the shadows. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PSBlog/~4/Q9ac1TlaV3AView the full article

As the MLB season heats up with teams battling for a postseason berth, we take a small break to celebrate the smaller things, specifically a baseball field nestled in a cornfield in Iowa as the Field of Dreams stadium is added to MLB The Show 21 on Tuesday, August 10 in a free content update for all players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Check out San Diego Studio’s design journal below to learn more about the development process! Play Video As the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox step onto the diamond this week in the cornfields of Iowa, you too can step onto the field with this update and live out your dreams. The team at San Diego Studio worked closely with the field architects and MLB to accurately replicate this one-of-a-kind field. We didn’t stop with just adding this iconic stadium to MLB The Show 21, but we have an entire week of live content dedicated to Field of Dreams. Reconstructing the most famous cornfield in Iowa to include in MLB The Show 21 was an awesome chance to show what makes this game unique and why we love baseball. Since Major League Baseball is coming to Iowa this August, we figured, why couldn’t we? At the start of the year, we received artwork that would help us build a stadium paying homage to the famed Field of Dreams in rural Iowa. I remember watching the movie with my dad back in 1989 thinking how exciting it would be to play here. When the opportunity arose to bring this new stadium adjacent to the most famous cornfield in Iowa I thought, this might be the only chance that fans get to experience this so we must get this right. Recreating the Field of Dreams was no small task for us, and because of that we needed to be very fluid in our build process. We started listing all the elements in the stadium that would be unique and representative of this famed site, like the corn for example. We were able to start designing the light structure locations, seating area, and general surroundings. One of the more technically important things in-stadium is the field dimensions. This render was a good start, but far from the essential information we needed to create a true representation that this stadium demands. We then received the first detailed layout of the stadium, which was essential for our teams to begin production. With the bleachers, while we didn’t have exact dimensions available, our team has been designing stadiums for so long, we felt we had a good idea what they would realistically look like. After designing stadium dimensions, we received the first look at the stadium during construction. With reference material in hand, from here it was up to the artists to create the details and bring the stadium to life. As stadium construction in Iowa had yet to be finished, our designers needed to research previous construction projects from the builder to craft all the minute details that would make a true-to-life stadium interior. Ultimately, our designers aimed to create a playable, in-game replica that gives the Field of Dreams the respect it deserves and is something that we, the fans, and the Players would be proud of. We hope you enjoy playing in the Field of Dreams as much as we enjoyed designing it. Hit homers, pitch no-hitters, and bask in the glory of corn. If you haven’t had a chance to try MLB The Show 21, now is the perfect opportunity.
