  1. Building a city is easier than you think. What’s more difficult is then bringing one to the brink of utter destruction. For Ubisoft Massive, it’s the second time in under five years it’s managed to do both. It began with New York City back in 2016 with the debut of its open-world shooter, The Division. For the game’s sequel, out this March, that ambition was even grander: a 1:1-scale Washington DC. Every ward, every district, mapped out and built to be fully explorable in-game. Over 68 square miles carefully replicated to mimic its real-world counterpart. Constructed and then systematically destroyed, street by street. The studio envisioned an American capital heavily scarred by a trio of world-altering events: the viral outbreak that ravaged its populace, the subsequent seven-month fallout that crippled its infrastructure, and the invasion of rogue forces reshaping what remained. It was a tough proposition. But the challenge was necessary: The Division’s gameplay needed a switch-up. What Washington DC offers that New York doesn’t “There’s a grid-like structure which doesn’t lead to a lot of variety,” says creative director Julian Gerighty of the original game’s New York setting. “When we started talking about the sequel, we really started thinking about the variety we wanted players to experience, walking from street to street.” There were two interlinked problems with Manhattan. The city’s uniformity limited attack strategy, while exploration was restricted to two types of biomes: residential and commercial. In contrast, The Division’s new home has six, each offering a distinct look and feel. So, as with NYC, we have residential and commercial zones. But these are joined by government districts, nature spots and suburbs. And that visual variety feeds directly into gameplay. You’ll need to adapt your tactics depending on the zone you’re fighting in as you try and liberate settlements and reclaim key locations. Your approach to the White House, which forms the game’s opening, is a straight running battle up the iconic building’s lawn. In contrast, the two-mile stretch of the central Mall is open territory with attacks coming from all sides, so sniper rifles are all-important for taking the upper hand. Different again are the tight corners and claustrophobic European-style streets of Georgetown, which makes the shotgun the weapon of choice. The game’s enemy AI has also been adapted to take advantage of these different spaces, promising a richer range of engagement scenarios this time around. You’ll face off against a trio of factions. Hyenas: drug-fuelled chaos-revellers preying on the weak. True Sons: a militia who rule by brute force. The Outcasts’ premise is intriguing: infected individuals were left in the city’s makeshift encampments to die. Those that survived have banded together and are now out for vengeance. A fourth faction, the Black Tusks, could pose the biggest threat. As well-equipped and organized as Division agents, this organization will be introduced as part of The Division 2’s endgame, laying siege to city areas at random. How Ubisoft Massive built a city and then destroyed it The initial build of Washington DC in-game was the easiest part of the process. The studio used ordnance survey information to efficiently digitize the base layer of the city, saving hundreds of man hours. “Basically we got the footprint of the city for free,” Gerighty explains, before elaborating on the task facing his team. “Recreating a city isn’t the biggest challenge. It’s recreating one with a story to tell — a world that’s been transformed — that makes it really interesting.” The director references a “world bible,” around an inch in thickness, that’s the accumulation of the studio looking at every district, street and building and asking the same question: “what happened here?” Every corner has a story. That’s true of every district — including the game’s new Dark Zones. How The Division 2 reinvents the original’s Dark Zone The Division’s Dark Zone was a cancer eating away at the very heart of New York City. An isolated, PvP battlefield that raged on darkened streets as players attempted to acquire and extract high-value gear without being killed. DC’s trio of Dark Zones are no less foreboding, but are positioned at the edges of Washington DC. A relocation partly to stop DC being split in two (potentially aggravating non-PvP parties trying to cross town) but to also strengthen the sequel’s new gameplay flow. PvE missions will slowly guide you in a full circle around the city, eventually leading you past these walled off areas — and hopefully tempting you inside. As with the wider city, the location for each helped shape their backstory and the gameplay experience within. Union Station to the east was the site of DC’s patient zero and is filled with government and army equipment. To the west is affluent Georgetown, with hastily-built walls that kept the general populace out but not the infection. Trek south and you’ll hit an area just recovering from flooding and being targeted by weaponized chemicals. You’ll find similar stories everywhere as you traverse the city. Streets entirely burnt-out as emergency services were overwhelmed, while others serve as pre-outbreak time capsules as their residents were evacuated first. Creating a living world If the theme for the first game was arguably about isolation and loss, the sequel is about rebirth. “It’s starting to put down the foundations to be able to build a better society,” suggests Gerighty when the question is put to him. “It’s less hopeless.” Part of that is in the weather; the switch from winter to spring instinctively suggests renewal. But it’s reflected in the populace as well. As we roam through the streets during a hands-on session, our street battle against a group of Hyenas is bolstered by armed civilians. Ineffectual they may be, but at least they’re fighting back. Ubisoft Massive is keen to balance the macro with the micro this time around. Side missions will bring these human interest stories to the fore, building your personal relationship with various pockets of the populace. It’s an emotional hook the studio hopes players will engage with: rescuing a kidnap victim will be as important as rebuilding an organizational infrastructure. “To create something that feels coherent, we’ve really grounded the game in the needs and resources of both the settlements and base of operations,” elaborates Julian. “Everything you do is related to either what civilians need, or what you need as a Division agent.” Everything in The Division 2 is intertwined. Aiding settlements helps you reclaim the city. Washington DC’s topography enriches gameplay. Mission design guides you on a lap of DC. Ubisoft Massive constructs and destroys a city again. All with the intention to make The Division 2 a superior online shooter to its predecessor. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2’s private beta launches today. The full game will release on March 15. 4. Hello fellow God Eaters! 2019 marks the ninth anniversary of the God Eater series — that’s almost a decade of hacking, slashing, and shooting huge monsters. 2019 also marks the release of the latest iteration in the series, God Eater 3. Let’s talk about the new features you can expect when you pick up the game starting this Friday for PS4. Character Customization: As with the previous entries, you’ll build your character from the ground up and that includes the way they look. God Eater 3 offers a plethora of new and different options to customize your protagonist with — we’re talking hair type, eye size and color, right down to the kind of satchels they’re wearing on their belt. The combinations are almost endless. Weapon Types: We won’t send you into battle unprepared, so your God Eater is equipped with a God Arc, a multi-purpose weapon that can be switched into several new modes. These modes include: Biting Edge: A dual-wield blade form that hides a “Mow-down state.” While in the mow-down state, stamina will not recover but you have a set of deadly new attacks. Airborne attacks are also available to you. Raygun: A radiation-powered rifle that increases in power output the longer it’s used. You can remain mobile while firing but the rifle’s power level resets when you stop shooting. These are just some of the new weapon modes you’ll master throughout your journey. There are many more to discover as you take down your enemy… Ash Aragami: The main threat to our heroes, the Aragami. More specifically the Ash Aragami, a new species of monster bred from the most recent “Calamity.” These beasts are highly adaptable and will prevent you from devouring their core while within the Ash Region of the game. Long story short, you step into their world prepare for an all-out war. It would be best to bring some friends along if you want to stand a chance of beating them… Multiplayer: New to God Eater 3 are the co-op Assault Missions. If you’re connected to the PlayStation Network, you’ll be matched with eight random players. NPCs will be added if there aren’t enough real folks to join in. You’ll be taking on a very powerful enemy within a five-minute window. The task in front of you will be quite formidable but you may still reap some rewards even if you aren’t able to best the challenge in front of you. Those are just some of the new features and modes you’ll experience in God Eater 3 when it’s unleashed. If you want to see the game in action, join us on our launch livestream this Friday, February 8, from 4:00pm – 5:00pm PST. Until then, good hunting! View the full article

  6. We’re thrilled to finally bring The Mage’s Tale to the PlayStation VR community. The Mage’s Tale is a 10+ hour dungeon crawler RPG set in the world of The Bard’s Tale series and designed from the ground up for virtual reality. Exploration, combats, puzzles to solve, and secrets await every player who dons the PS VR headset. When your wizarding master is kidnapped, it’s up to you to rescue him and complete your journey from apprentice to master mage. You’re armed with nothing but your wits, raw elemental power, and your own wizarding workshop in which you can craft hundreds of different spell combinations. The unrivaled immersion of VR allows you to tell your very own Mage’s Tale. What makes VR so special? The Mage’s Tale was inspired by the daydreaming we do as kids. We wanted the capture the feeling of going into your backyard and pretending to be a master wizard, summoning lighting bolts, and throwing fireballs at make believe masters. All of the game is designed to capture that sense of childlike wonder and power fantasy. For inXile CEO Brian Fargo, VR was the realization of something that he had been striving for his whole gamedev career. When he helped create The Bard’s Tale in 1985, it was about providing a way of making players feel like they were exploring a fantasy world — to capture the spirit of tabletop gaming in a video game. With the arrival of VR, we now had the power to put players into the dungeon, the world alive and full of danger. They no longer have to imagine their surroundings. They are there. Virtual Reality Your Way To fulfill that power fantasy of being an all-powerful wizard, it was critical that we make you, the player, feel in control. VR really shines when you get to be creative in how you interact with the world. If a player walks into a room, sees an object, and says to themselves “I bet X will happen if I do Y,” it’s our jobs as developer to make as many of those intuitive jumps come true. Because each time your expectations aren’t fulfilled, you feel more like you are in a game and less like you’re in the magical world of Caith. We extended that philosophy to our world building, combat systems, and crafting systems. For example, one of our favorite moments happened at GDC while demoing the game. Our GDC volunteer decided to craft an anti-gravity windblast landmine with confetti. He threw down a landmine right before a goblin warrior went in for the kill. The explosion threw the goblin up into the air and into the roof of the dungeon, causing an explosion of confetti. As the confetti filled up the room, the player switched back to fireballs to blow the poor goblin up on his way back down. It was one of the coolest moments and combos that we have ever seen. VR game development was completely new to inXile and relatively new to most gamers as well. Because of that, we put an emphasis on early first time user experiences (FTUE) to really wow people who were new to VR and blow them away with its potential. We noticed that players wanted to poke, prod, and examine everything in the dungeon and around them — whether igniting cobwebs, picking up bones, trying to kill bats, blowing up crates and barrels, or anything that let them feel that they were “there” in the world. Therefore, we turned all those little things (Non-Essential Funds in gamedev speak, items that provide flavor rather than direct gameplay) into interactables. This resulted in some great player-generated moments such as: Throwing a ice javelin at a bat and freezing him then using the frozen bat as a paper airplane Grabbing an unlit torch, using a fireball to ignite it, and then using the torch to fend off ghost traps Finding a random, worthless gold coin that you can throw into the water to find a ghost ship and skip a puzzle The game’s responsiveness is key to its immersion; it makes you feel present in a living, breathing world, not just another on-rails VR experience. We truly appreciate all the people that came into the studio, tried out the dev builds, and shared their wish list of things they want to do in the dungeons. As important as it is for a game to look good, it’s probably more important for a VR title to feel good. We realized early on that everyone was looking for different things when it came to their play preferences. We made immersion one of the core product pillars, and that meant it had particular rules that we had to follow. We had to build the game around the fact that the player will have no HUD or heavy UI elements. The player gets all the visual feedback by actual things such as a spell book showing what you have unlocked, your crafting tables have the ingredients you picked up, your gloves have gems that indicate health and experience, etc. We couldn’t have 100% immersion since some feedback is important so if you bring your gloves up to the player’s face (as though you’re looking at your watch), you will see values like Hit Points or Experience Points needed for the next level. Beyond that, there are no UI elements in the player’s vision. Here is a short list that we created to get around things: To load or start a game you have to throw a magic bottle into a cauldron. To delete a game profile, you have to burn it with fire Your HP can be refilled by health potions, but it is not automatic. You have to drink the potion by bringing it to your mouth (or pouring it all over your head). Your “Inventory” is a magic frog, Fergus, that you feed your items on your adventures. To craft new magic spells, you combine spell ingredients in a cauldron and stir them up. To equip that spell you have to grab the spell and place it into your spell book. “Options” is a physical table that you can interact with. Shortly after our initial release we found that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for action VR experiences like ours. We’ve added many options for both comfort and immersion for you to set. For example: a reticle for aiming helps, but doesn’t feel “real” to some players. Smooth Movement feels “real,” but makes many people seasick. VR needs more options to work outside of the normal choices that players are used to. With that line of reasoning in mind, we implemented Step Movement, Step Turning, Smooth Movement, and Smooth Turning (with speed adjustment) — and, since the player is a mage, they still get an aimed teleport as well. Along with the movement options, we also gave the player the ability to see their reticle or hide it, and show or hide the sensor if the player loses tracking. All of these things matter because VR is all about the experience. A VR Game with Meat on its Bones At inXile, we’re known for our classic-styled RPG titles such as Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera, so when we announced The Mage’s Tale, it came as a surprise to our fans. For many of us at the studio, VR was an opportunity to realize gamedev dreams decades in the making. At the time we were developing The Mage’s Tale, most VR experiences were more tech demos than games. As a RPG company, we really wanted to create a full game experience in VR — a story, character progression, exploration with secrets to be found, and different systems to master. Everything about the game — the combat, the exploration, the crafting, the puzzles — is designed with VR in mind. The more a player feels a part of the world, the more they can lose themselves in the gameplay and have an amazing playing experience. The Mage’s Tale is YOUR Tale With PS VR, Sony has made an incredible commitment to VR gaming and we’re thrilled to finally bring The Mage’s Tale to a fanbase that has been patiently waiting for this day for a while. Thank you to Sony and thanks to all of you who have asked after a PS VR of the game. Your enthusiasm is what made this moment a reality and we hope you enjoy the adventure! View the full article
  7. Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game where legendary competitors fight for glory, fame, and fortune on the fringes of the Frontier. To win in the Apex Games you’ll need to stay sharp, use your wits, and keep your friends close. But victory also favors the prepared, and a few helpful tips in your pocket can be the difference between defeat and sweet, sweet triumph. Check out these critical tips and tricks to help you kickstart your career in the Apex Games. Choose the Legend Who Matches Your Playstyle In the Apex Arena, all competitors are equals, and the Legends are evenly matched in terms of strength, speed, and firepower. It’s their abilities that set them apart, so you’ll want to pick the Legend that matches your preferred playstyle and complements your squad. Want to be the shield between your team and opponents? Jump into the arena as the hearty Gibraltar. How about helping your squad travel long distances to take your enemies by surprise? Pathfinder, with his trusty grappling hook, is your perfect pick. Figure out what role you like to play and try different Legends to see which fits you best. Stay Close to Your Squad Squadplay is critical to success in Apex Legends, where you jump into the arena with two teammates at your side. Working together, you can keep each other safe and outplay your opponents by combining your abilities. A well-placed Dimensional Rift by Wraith, for example, can put her team right on top of unsuspecting opponents, while Caustic can protect teammates by using Nox gas to drive away enemies. Try to strike out on your own, and you’ll be up against other teams who can easily overwhelm you. Stick close to your squad, and you’ll have a greater chance at success. Use Smart Comms to Keep in Touch with Your Teammates You can give your teammates critical information — and vice versa — through an in-game system that lets you ping useful items and locations on their screens. You can pinpoint the position of gear pieces (and what they are), highlight threats, and tell your teammates which direction you’re going before you’ve even plugged in a microphone. Use this to your advantage to make sure your teammates see what you see and always have the latest intel. Apex Legends | Image Gallery Get Familiar with the Arena Kings Canyon — the map where all Apex Matches take place — is a deadly playground full of abandoned military installations and encroaching nature. Learning how to maneuver, where the hotspots of activity are, and where to find the best loot are all important nuggets of knowledge. The arena is surrounded by a giant Ring that shrinks at regular intervals throughout the match, and you’ll receive damage every second you spend outside its perimeter. Knowing your surroundings will help you make decisions faster and maneuver more effectively to avoid getting stuck outside it. Go for the Good Stuff, But Be Careful Different sections of the map spawn different tiers of loot — the higher your weapon or armor piece’s tier, the stronger it is. Some locations on the map are consistently full of high-tier loot, which means everyone will want to get to these spots first. The true motherlode comes packed inside dropships that land at random spots on the map, rewarding anyone who can claim them with the most powerful loot in the game. You start each match with no weapons or armor, so you and your squad will have to decide if these high-tier caches are worth the risk each time you play. As for where they are? We’ll let you figure that out on your own. Revive and Respawn Your Teammates After your health is depleted, you’ll go into a downed state where you’re still alive, but slow and in need of medical attention. If you die before your teammates can help, they have one last shot to save you. Every Legend carries a Legend Banner that they drop when they die. Only their teammates can pick these up, and taking one to a Respawn Beacon will bring that Legend back to life. Pulling off a successful resurrection can bring a team back from the brink of defeat, so don’t let the opportunity slip by. Use Jump Towers, Hot Zones, and Other Features to Your Advantage Kings Canyon is full of semi-permanent map objects you can use to get a leg up on your opponents. Jump Towers allow you to fly into the air and skydive back down to the ground. Hot Zones give you access to higher-tier loot on a random portion of the map if you can get there first. Respawn Beacons can bring downed teammates back to life. Whether you use them to get out of a hairy situation or take your enemies by surprise, learning how to use these features adds another layer to your team’s strategy. That’s as good as another gun in your arsenal. Don’t Let Anything Go to Waste Body armor, weapon attachments, and other helpful pieces of gear are all hidden across the arena for you to grab. The inventory system will automatically tell you if a weapon or piece of gear is better than what you already have and keep you from grabbing lower-tier loot. That way, you won’t risk snatching something you can’t use in a panic. You and your teammates can help each other by calling out item locations as you spot them. The tagging system also notes an item’s rarity level, so you can snag a higher-level piece of gear that you might’ve missed otherwise. Also make sure to loot fallen enemies — they’ll drop a cache when you take them out, and often have some of the best loot. Always keep an eye out, because you never know when a single piece of armor is going to save you in the end. Play Apex Legends for free now on PlayStation 4, and we’ll see you in the arena. 8. In 2017, Activision delighted Crash Bandicoot fans by unleashing the gorgeous N. Sane Trilogy. This trio of remastered PlayStation classics spun up fans’ excitement and an appetite for an updated version of 1999’s beloved Crash Team Racing. Activision made that desire a reality last December by announcing Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, and now we’ve had a chance to go hands-on with the kart racer. We also spoke with Stéphane Gravelat, Production Director at Beenox, about updating the colorful and wacky racing game. Taking The Wheel Like bringing in a reliable old vehicle to the shop, Nitro-Fueled’s stunning new coat of paint immediately captures the eye. Beginning with the racer-selection menu, it’s clear that Beenox has carried forward the endearing detail introduced with the N. Sane Trilogy. Doctor Cortex has a side-eye that could kill, whereas Coco adorably checks her phone while idling in her kart. That same visual splendor carries over the tracks themselves, which burst with cartoonish liveliness. Lush waterfalls and looming pirate ships inject Crash Cove with new personality, while families of cuddly polar bears meander about Polar Pass. The tracks are distinct and memorable. The kart controls are tightly tuned and responsive. I felt completely in control when weaving through marching seals in Polar Pass or dodging rolling armadillos in Dingo Canyon. Drifting takes some getting used to, as racers can quickly cut corners on a dime and it’s easy to accidentally ram a wall. Before long you’ll fall into the drifting rhythm and be boosting through tricky maneuvers. Developer Beenox promises everything fans loved about the original will be here. The single-player campaign will let you showdown with tough bosses like the erratic Ripper Roo, and ultimately race against the nasty extraterrestrial himself, Nitrous Oxide. Time trials pack plenty of challenge to veteran players, while new options will make the game more accessible to newcomers (read more below). Local split-screen is still alive and well, while online functionality for all multiplayer modes lets you race against players everywhere. From muffler to headlights, Nitro-Fueled is the complete CTR package, with some extra horsepower. Read on for a deeper look under the hood of development with Beenox Production Director, Stéphane Gravel. Tuning Up CTR for a New Generation of Racers What sets Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled apart from other kart racers out there? Well, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is the original kart-racing experience. It’s the same experience players got 20 years ago when they started playing on the original PlayStation. It was important for us to stay true to that game, while of course updating it to today’s graphical standards. It’s the best of both worlds – you have a great game and you are able to make it look as beautiful as possible. That’s something we are very proud of. The game has been in development a little over a year. What has it been like eating, breathing, and sleeping that world? It’s a lot of fun. Back at Beenox we are big fans of Crash Bandicoot. Even when the N. Sane Trilogy was announced, we were really glad that came out. We like the original games, and like many fans out there we wanted Crash Team Racing to be remastered as well, at some point. So when the chance came up that Activision was looking for a studio to remaster that game, we stepped up to that occasion to bring it to this generation of consoles. Where does the development process begin with a remaster like this? It begins by replaying the original game a lot. We played a lot of Crash Team Racing. Taking notes, finding opportunities where we can improve on that game, where possible. Mostly – towards the fact that it’s been 20 years – things have evolved a lot. What can we do to modernize that game up to today’s standards. Of course, visual fidelity was the most obvious choice, but there was also the online racing. 20 years ago, online racing wasn’t part of the standards, but now when you buy a game you pretty much expect to be able to race against your friends online. What’s it like to go back to game design and aesthetic of the late ’90s? It was different depending on who you were on the team. For some of us it was nostalgic. I started in the game industry in 1998, and [Crash Team Racing] came out in 1999. We were playing [Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled] during lunchtime and having a lot of fun competing against each other. It reminded me of the good time I had when I started working in the industry. For some of our team, they pretty much never saw an original PlayStation game. They are younger than I am, so they finally get to see what Crash Team Racing was. That game still has a huge cult following 20 years after coming out. When you see the original graphics of the PlayStation, some of [the younger developers] were like “Whoa, you played games like that?” Actually, that game was great-looking at that time. Depending on how old you are, you have a different level of reception, if you will. Any final message you want to deliver to big CTR fans out there? We are seeing on some online forums that fans want [Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled] to be as close to the original game. This is something that’s near to our hearts as well, so we’re making sure that the feeling is as close as possible to the original CTR. Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled peels out onto PS4 June 21. 9. Hey campers, rise and shine! Raul Rubio here, Creative Director and CEO of Tequila Works. I am so excited to say that I’m directing Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality (SPVR) and produced by SPVR and MWM Immersive, to be released later in the year at PS Store. In Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, you’ll play the charming but arrogant Phil Connors Jr., who grew up in the shadow of his father — a man who spent a lifetime repeating a single day until he had made it perfect. But for Phil Jr., today is the worst day of his life. He’s trapped back home in Punxsutawney, the small town he thought he’d escaped — where he can’t even get a decent cappuccino — and he’s going to have to repeat the day over and over until he learns the true value of friends and family. At Tequila Works, we have been looking into VR since its beginning. We released The Invisible Hours in 2017, our first step in developing what we call Spherical Narrative. By following several simultaneous stories in real time, the player can find clues and discover the mysteries hiding in plain sight. For this VR project, we wanted to go a step further by making the player an active, disruptive element in the story, giving them more narrative choices to have a key influence on the storyline. Not only will the player have a much stronger sense of physical interactivity, but a deeper emotional connection to the non-playable characters. When we got the opportunity to work on Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, it looked like the perfect scenario to create a unique experience of intertwined stories, with the player fully embedded in timeline choices. After all, time loops are like being trapped in a videogame! This game contains a time loop mechanic with multiple branching narratives, as well as individual meaningful stories that we can build upon. It also includes the same dark humor of the original film, letting us play around with the inherent instinct of every VR player to mess with everything around them. James Siciliano of Rick and Morty and Joshua Rubin of Telltale lent their expertise to help us build this original story from the world of the beloved movie. We have developed an ever-changing experience through deep branching narrative gameplay and full interaction with all NPCs. Because what would you do with eternity if there were no tomorrow? Like we did in The Invisible Hours, we are working with talented facial and motion capture artists to create a unique, immersive experience. Using our dedicated VR tools and the support of SPVR and MWM Immersive, a leading creator of high-quality VR and AR experiences, we have been able to create gameplay that is accessible and highly engaging. We’re so excited to bring this game to PSVR, you can’t imagine how much it hurts biting our tongues for so long! So please enjoy Punxsutawney Phil’s weather forecast and we hope you are as excited as we are to share what we’ve been cooking up! Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is coming out later this year. Enjoy the teaser and stay tuned for more! View the full article

  12. It’s finally time to get hands on with Anthem. The Anthem Open Demo is from February 1-3 and it’s your chance to jump into a javelin and explore the beauty and chaos of the world you’ve heard so much about. If you’re wondering what the Open Demo experience is like, take a second to check out these four things you can expect from the Anthem Open Demo. 1. You’ll Get to Visit Fort Tarsis The demo starts in Fort Tarsis, the walled city that you call home in Anthem. It’s your hub for everything you’ll need between missions — it’s also a space where you are protected from dangerous forces that torment the outside world. In Tarsis, you can visit the Forge and customize your javelin with loot you pick up on missions. You can also head to other locations in Fort Tarsis – like the Enclave, the Bar, and the Arcanist Lab. This will be where you get to know the characters of Anthem, and many of them will be around to chat, though their contracts (special in-game missions) will not be available. 2. You’ll Get Your Own Javelin to Personalize (Two of Them, Actually) In the Open Demo, you’ll start out as a level 10 pilot with a fully equipped javelin of your choice. You can unlock a second javelin of your choice (either Ranger, Colossus, Storm, or Interceptor) at level 12. Your level will be capped at level 15 for the Open Demo. Since you have access to the Forge, you’ll also be able to personalize your javelins and change your loadouts to equip any new gear or weaponry you get on missions. The earn rates on XP, Items, and Coin have been adjusted to give you a full Anthem experience over the relatively short timeframe of the Open Demo. You’ll also be given some Coin in the demo so you can have the chance to purchase and equip cosmetics. 3. You’ll Embark on Expeditions In the demo you can head out into the world, completing missions and discovering some of the secrets it holds. You’ll meet the Arcanist Matthias, part of an order of researcher-monks charged with unlocking the mysteries of the world, who will send you on a three-part expedition to track down a shaper relic with mysterious powers. Explore, fly, and swim in Freeplay and take on emergent challenges as you travel through a section of Great Falls Canyon and some of the surrounding areas. You’ll even get to delve into one of the Strongholds, high-level dungeons that require a full squad of Freelancers to complete. 4. You’ll Encounter Unfriendly Wildlife Whenever you venture into the world of Anthem you can be sure that you’ll encounter beautifully dangerous wildlife. You might be hoping for a grabbit sighting but don’t let your guard down — there are living, moving threats that can come from all angles. These creatures don’t care if you’re in the midst of a Mission or casually exploring the world in Anthem’s free-roaming mode Freeplay, they’re poised to make you have a no good, very bad day — and cause major damage while they’re at it. You may encounter wyverns, vicious flying creatures, will attack anything they come across, raining fire on their prey from above and leaving you desperate for a way to douse the flames and regain your health. Oh, but if you think that’s terrifying, just wait until you meet an Ursix. This Open Demo will give you an amazing look at the full Anthem experience, so mark your calendars for February 1-3, and get ready for the full game’s release on February 22! View the full article

  14. Valhalla! What comes to mind when you think of this word? Most people will think of the grand hall in Norse mythology, where great warriors gather after their death. A few of you, however, will have flashbacks of being heel-stomped to death by a masked angel with metallic wings. This article is dedicated to you! My name is Denny Yeh, Senior Staff Combat Designer here at Sony Santa Monica Studio. I worked on many of the enemies and boss fights in the latest God of War. Today, I’d like to talk about one of my favorites: The Valkyries. WARNING: Heavy spoilers and nerdy combat design theory talk ahead. What is a Boss Fight? There is no single formula for making a good boss fight in video games. Every fight serves a different purpose. The best fights are the ones that embrace that purpose, without getting bogged down by lofty ideas about what a good boss fight needs to look like. For example, let’s compare the Valkyrie boss fight to the Baldur boss fight. The Spectacle Boss The Baldur fight is all about spectacle and story. It’s there to remind you how brutal and over the top God of War fights can be. Since it was the first fight in the game, we couldn’t make the combat very hard. If we did, many players would get stuck and be unable to enjoy the rest of the game. It did not have the deepest gameplay mechanics, though, because that’s not what players needed one hour into the game (when they were still getting used to the new camera and controls). Baldur’s attacks were simple and straightforward, encouraging players to experiment with their defensive options. The fight focused on memorable action moments, from Kratos shattering a giant boulder with his shield, to the ground splitting in two beneath his feet as he locked arms with Baldur. It was a fun, fast-paced roller coaster that players of all skill levels could play through and they could feel awesome while doing so. The action moments helped get the blood pumping, but rarely did they put the player at true risk of dying. This is because the purpose of the Baldur fight was not to challenge the player. The purpose of the Baldur fight was to make the player feel like the god of war, Kratos, fighting against a seemingly invincible opponent that felt no pain. When Baldur first punches Kratos over the roof of the building, the players are just as surprised as Kratos. When Baldur comes back to life and throws the giant monolith at Kratos, the players are just as tired of his crap (the fight is maybe a tad long). And when Kratos finally snaps Baldur’s neck and sends him plummeting down the chasm, players are just as relieved that the ordeal is over. The Baldur fight focuses on selling the emotional beats of the narrative through spectacular action moments. The Combat Boss The nine Valkyrie fights are on the opposite end of the boss fight spectrum. They’re end-game content, so we could assume players are accustomed to the game’s controls by then. They’re optional, so we didn’t have to worry about players getting stuck. Also, unlike the story-focused Baldur fights, the narrative of the Valkyries are done pre and post-fight, without combat dialogue. This meant that the Valkyries had the freedom to focus entirely on combat. Imagine the game as one long class that teaches you the basics of each subject. The subjects are the combat mechanics, such as block, dodge, parry, axe throw, son arrows, runic attacks, etc. Some players may excel at certain subjects more than others, but no one should fail at any of them. In this analogy, the nine Valkyries are the final exams of each subject. If you’re the kind of player that always relies on rolling around like a polar bear to dodge everything, the Valkyries will hit you with an undodgeable attack so that you start appreciating the importance of blocking. The Valkyries’ purpose was to push God of War’s combat mechanics to their limits. The Valkyries encouraged (and sometimes required) players to master mechanics that they may have neglected previously. They were an opportunity for players to improve their own personal combat skills and challenge themselves if they wanted more after completing the main story. Attacks with a Purpose Like the boss fights themselves, all of a boss’ attacks also need to have a purpose in mind. We designed each of the Valkyrie’s attacks to enforce a different behavior from the player. When designing enemy behavior, the important question isn’t “What can this enemy do?” it’s “What can this enemy make the player do?” For example, let’s look at two of the Valkyrie’s ranged attacks: Multi Chakram Throw: The Valkyrie holds her arms out horizontally and then tosses a spread of medium speed chakram projectiles. If you try to dodge this, one of the outer chakrams will hit you. Instead, you’re better off blocking. Heavy Chakram Throw The Valkyrie holds her arms up vertically and then tosses a fast unblockable chakram straight at the player. If you try to block this… well, it’s unblockable. To avoid this, you must dodge sideways. These two attacks are designed to complement each other. The player action that beats one will get you killed if you try it against the other. As a result, you have to watch the attack animations closely and answer with the proper move. This is how we keep the fights engaging. Paying attention in class is fun! Flexible Difficulty We gave some attacks multiple answers, allowing the player more freedom to express their individual skills. For example, the Valkyrie has an attack where she flies up, summons a giant mace and then slams it into the ground. You can’t block or dodge this attack, so you must knock her out of the air before she completes it. Knocking her down with the son’s arrows is the easiest option, but it doesn’t stun the Valkyrie long enough to follow up with additional hits. If players want to deal more damage, they must use the slower and riskier axe throw instead. This kind of design gives the Valkyrie a more flexible difficulty level. If you’re not confident in your axe throw abilities, you have the option of just using the son’s arrows. However, it won’t be as effective. Side note: On the hardest difficulty (Give me God of War), the arrows won’t knock her down at all. We demand perfection from anyone bold enough to choose the difficulty level written in bright red text! Challenging but Fair It’s sometimes surprising to people when I tell them the Valkyries were designed to be beatable by a level 1 Kratos without taking any damage. Sure, they’re supposed to be the hardest enemies in the game, but we also wanted them to be completely fair. This meant putting the outcome of the fight entirely in the hands of the player. Every single thing the Valkyrie can do has an answer. Every time you die against a Valkyrie, you know there was something you could have done differently to prevent it. This is the most important thing to keep in mind when designing a challenging boss. It must be fair. If a boss hits you with an instant speed attack that automatically kills you, it feels like you’re just rolling the dice. That is a bad type of challenge. Players need to be confident that if they play properly, they will succeed. This the unspoken trust between a player and a game. If we break that trust, we run the risk of players feeling like the fight was cheap rather than challenging. Some players will of course still say the Valkyrie fights are cheap or unfair, but that is usually due to lack of knowledge. Maybe they didn’t realize you could interrupt their mace quake attack, or they didn’t know you had to dodge an attack a certain way. Because of all the effort we put into fair gameplay, we could confidently give tips on how to succeed next time. Watch for the Valkyrie to pull out her scythe and time your parry, or throw your axe at her when she flies into the air, or make sure to dodge three times in a row when she tries to stomp you. There is a solution for every death. It’s like papa Kratos always said, “Do not be salty… be… better.” Nine Unique Personalities There are nine Valkyrie fights in total scattered throughout the game. We wanted each one to feel unique, even though they shared many similar moves. To achieve this goal, we had to be smart about how we chose each Valkyrie’s move set. Each one needed a defining theme to make them stand out among the others. In addition, even though players could fight the first eight in any order, there was a rough intended progression based on how easily accessible their location was. We used this to help ease players in to the more complex Valkyrie fights. Some of the earlier Valkyries are designed to teach you mechanics that will be necessary to defeat the later Valkyries, and eventually the queen. Gunnr – The Tutorial Valkyrie Gunnr is the first Valkyrie most people fight, so we purposely kept her as the simplest. She only has three damaging attacks: Wing swipes into a double scythe swipe Flying downward scythe chop Dashing scythe spiral As you can see, all of these attacks involve the scythe weapon. The Valkyries have three weapons available to them, which they can instantly summon when needed: Scythe, Mace and Chakram. To help with keeping each Valkyrie memorable, we were careful about which weapons we allowed each Valkyrie to use. Gunnr was limited to the scythe to keep her straightforward. The scythe is the least punishing of the three weapons, since it can both be parried and dodged with good timing. Regardless of which defensive mechanic the player preferred, it was always effective against Gunnr. She didn’t counter any specific playstyle. Her attacks tested the player’s timing rather than demanding the correct answer. The question wasn’t “What are you gonna do” it was “When are you Gunnr do it.” Sorry. Eir – The Defender Valkyrie Eir tested the player’s offensive capabilities, specifically the ability to interrupt her attacks. She introduced a new defensive cocoon ability, testing the player’s ability to break her guard. She also used the flying mace quake ability mentioned previously, which required the player to knock her out of the… Eir… using projectile attacks. The rest of her arsenal was rounded out by primarily slow and unblockable mace attacks. All of this, combined with her high health total, made her feel like a heavy tank compared to Gunnr. Also, while Gunnr encourages you to simply answer her attacks as they came, Eir forces you to pro-actively stop her attacks before they can hit you. Imagine that annoying kid in class who shouts out the answer to a question before the teacher could finish asking. That’s who Eir teaches you to become. Geirdriful – The Ranged Valkyrie Geidriful doesn’t like you. Maybe she thinks you smell. Or maybe she doesn’t like the way you chew your food. Whatever her reasoning, she does her best to stay far away from you and shoot you down with her signature chakram projectiles. This tendency of hers already gives her a different feel from Eir and Gunnr, who prefer to charge toward you. Geirdriful tests the player’s ability to close the distance safely. Players have to navigate her many different projectile types to reach her and do damage. She also tests the player’s patience, especially on harder difficulties where you can’t knock her out of the air. Kara – The Summoner Valkyrie Kara is very different. You might even say she’s the most unique “Kara-cter” among all the Valkyries. She is much weaker than her sisters, but has the unique ability to summon minions to fight for her. Whereas other Valkyries test the player’s mastery in a one-on-one duel, Kara tests the player’s ability to deal with crowds. The Kara fight is an interesting one to watch people play, because there are many different strategies you can employ. Some players will utilize their big-area runic attacks to clear multiple minions at once, while others will use their high damage single target runic attacks to try to burst Kara’s low health down. Players also have the option of using the environment to their advantage, instantly killing minions by knocking them into the pit below. Each of these are valid strategies that players can employ during other group encounters, so we made sure Kara supported them all. Kara is well positioned as one of the middle Valkyrie fights players usually encounter. She serves as a reminder of how different each fight can feel. Olrunn – The Quick Valkyrie Olrunn is the fastest Valkyrie. She uses no weapons, relying only on her tricky movements and her razor sharp wings. She tests the player’s ability to control the camera and keep track of the target. Her signature move is her circle evade, in which she breaks lock on and dodges behind the player. She encourages the use of an often neglected mechanic in our game – the quick turn (default down on d-pad). Olrunn’s attack behaviors make her feel like a trickster. By cherry-picking specific attacks from the Valkyrie’s arsenal, we’re able to give her a personality that’s communicated entirely through gameplay. This is an example of how powerful a cohesive combat loop can be when designing boss fights. Olrunn’s purpose is to feel slippery, so we focused on giving her attacks that let her Ol-runn away quickly. Rota – The Grappler Valkyrie Rota loves Valhalla…almost as much as she loves stomping on Kratos’ face. Rota’s theme was that she focused on dealing high damage with her grappling attacks: the heel stomp and the swoop. Rota is an example of how enemy characters can share attacks, but use them in completely different ways. While other Valkyries do have these moves in their repertoire, Rota had the ability to chain them up to three times in a row (five times in new game plus). She also had tricky ways to combo into them from her non-grapple attacks. We also designed Rota before we implemented the game’s lock-on ability. This meant that every time she swooped past you, you had to use quick turn or manually spin the camera to dodge her next swoop. This made Rota originally one of the hardest Valkyries for most players. Once lock-on was implemented, she became more manageable. In the end, her repeated screams of “Valhalla!” every single time she leapt into the air made her memorable as the “crazy one.” Gondul – The Fire Valkyrie Unlike the previous Valkyries, Gondul was themed around an elemental affinity to fire. However, that alone isn’t enough to make a fight feel different. A lot of things can be fire based. If she just shot fireballs, for example, that wouldn’t feel any different than Geirdriful’s chakrams. We had to find a way to communicate that fire affinity through gameplay rather than just visuals. We prototyped a few different fire based attacks for her, but ended up going with only one: her fire meteors. She can summon these by leaping into the air or dashing back and casting a spell. The meteors fly in from the sky and leave behind dangerous hazards on the ground where they land. This was a good signature move for her because it changed how the player interacted with her other attacks. The rest of Gondul’s attacks feel different because players must now be careful about which direction they dodge into, lest they roll right into a burning pyre and find their health bar suddenly gone… dul. Despite this meteor attack being her only fire themed move, Gondul still felt like a fire Valkyrie because of how important it was to her combat loop. Hildr – The Ice Valkyrie Hildr is a product of her location. You fight her in Niflheim, meaning that you have a time limit (due to Niflheim’s poison mist). Also, unlike the other Valkyries, if you die to her, you have to run through a few rooms of Niflheim to try again. All of these things combined make her potentially the most frustrating Valkyrie to face. We were very careful to take this into account when balancing her. The nice thing about the other Valkyrie fights is that it was easy to learn their attacks by repetition, because you could retry the fight very fast after dying. Hildr did not have this luxury, so we purposely kept her fight less complex. There aren’t many new mechanics to learn when fighting Hildr, so players are free to focus on beating the time limit imposed by the poison mist. Oh, and she has a sweet ice barrage attack, but really, that did not have as big an impact in making her feel unique as everything else surrounding her. She turned out to be less of an “Ice Valkyrie” and more of a “Niflheim Mist Valkyrie.” Sigrun – The Valkyrie Queen In reality, all of the previous Valkyrie boss fights were just tutorials to get you ready for the true final boss fight against Sigrun. Sigrun is the culmination of everything you learned while facing her sisters. She has almost every attack. In fact, she originally had so many attacks in her decision tree that the game engine could not handle it. We had to trim down her movelist a bit to fit her into the game’s limits for an AI character. This still resulted in over 25 attacks, in addition to many combo chains and variations. She is the final exam that assumes you’ve been paying attention all semester. During one of our playtests, a player started fighting Sigrun in the late morning. I remember leaving for lunch and coming back to find this same player still fighting her a few hours later. When he finally beat her, we interviewed him about the experience. I expected him to be extremely frustrated, since that’s usually what happens when someone spends three hours on a single fight. You might even say I expected his day to be… Sigruined. Instead, he said that fight was his favorite part of the game. What we didn’t see during those three hours was how he was improving with each try. Every time he died, he would remember what he did wrong and make a mental note of what to do next time. Each time he retried, his muscle memory got better along with his knowledge of the fight. He was mentally engaged in learning the fight throughout that entire three-hour session. When he finally defeated her, the satisfaction of the win was even greater because he knew it was his own built up experience that paid off. This is the kind of fun that Sigrun aims to give players: the fun of leveling up your own skills as a player to overcome an immense challenge. That kind of personal leveling is always more rewarding than just leveling up your in-game avatar. Conclusion There are so many more things that went into designing the combat for the Valkyries that I could talk all day about them. But I won’t, because this is already getting too long. And I want to cut some slack to whoever is editing or localizing this (sorry!). If you’d like to read more about the Valkyries from an art perspective, you can check out our article on that here: https://godofwar.playstation.com/stories/creating-valkyries Or, if you’re interested in reading about a different flavor of boss fight, you can find our article on Baldur here: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/08/16/fighting-a-god-behind-the-scenes-of-god-of-wars-first-boss-battle/ Thank you for sticking with me through this long combat-focused dive into the creation of the Valkyrie boss fights. We had a blast making them and thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone fight, struggle, and eventually overcome them. The next time you run into a Valkyrie, we hope you’ll appreciate the deeper meaning behind everything they do to teach you to become a better player. Remember, when a Valkyrie tries to step on your face or chop off your head with a scythe, she’s really just saying “I value your education.” God of War is on sale now for $25.99USD ($32.49 CAD). 15. Alright 2019, you’ve made your point. Judging by the new games we’ve seen so far this year, it’s gonna be a good one. We’ve already got an awfully diverse lineup with survival horror masterpiece Resident Evil 2, the long (long) awaited Kingdom Hearts III, and action flight sim Ace Combat 7, not to mention smaller hits like Futuregrind, Megalith, and Wandersong. But enough talk… have at you! And by you, I mean the polls. Get in there. How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year. What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will. How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted. 16. Greetings, PlayStation Nation. Hope 2019 is off to a great start for you all! Before we get to this month’s line up, we have news to share about cloud storage for PS Plus members. In early February, we will be expanding our cloud storage space from 10GB to 100GB for PS Plus members — giving PS4 owners even more space to keep all those game saves. 17. Beautiful, but oh so brutal, Mortal Kombat 11 deals out bone-snapping, wince-inducing strikes with the speed and ferocity of a card shark. The detail (and sheer inventiveness) of the fatalities will cause you to flinch, but equally you’ll feel the conviction of a fighter’s intent in their facial expressions alone. Take Sub-Zero’s ice-cold fury at meeting old foe Scorpion in their match-up intro, for example. Even with the mask covering half his face, it had us catching our breath. Mortal Kombat was always a genre heavyweight graphically, but every inch of MK11 – character movement, those heavily -detailed stage backdrops, even loading screens – pack an inarguable level of polish that deserves to be appreciated. There’s plenty fresh with MK11; new combatants who fit flawlessly into the ever-expanding mythos; reinvigorated move-sets; refined systems; additional modes. MK11 feels like the product of teachings learnt not just from its predecessors but the critically-acclaimed Injustice 2. But for a title that’s so intent on not coasting on past glories in terms of mechanics, it is a game that has a thematic fixation with time. Both to its manipulation and in context of the franchise’s history. The time-traveling twists of its story MK11 is a continuation of a story beat that was core to the 2011 series’ reboot. There, the story told across the 1992 original and its two sequels was changed due to a warning sent back through time to Raiden. The message came from a future version of himself, in the hope that foreknowledge would alter events and prevent his defeat at a later date. Subsequently characters, events and more were changed – but not all for the better. The fallout of that intervention will be dealt directly in MK11, with the reveal of new big bad, Kronica. She’s “the boss of bosses,” director Ed Boon explains. “She’s been staging all the events since MK1 to MKX.” And thus, a time travel caper forms the spine of the MK11 story. “We’re taking all the events of MK1, MK2, and MK3, and folding them on top of the current timeline,” Boon continues. “We have time quakes, characters meeting their former selves…[for example], young Liu Kang meeting revenant Liu Kang. It’s so cool.” The reexamination of the series’ 26 year history could be a compelling hook for longtime fans. Imagine Looper with martial arts rather than bullets. Or a gory spin on Back to the Future. Time manipulation bleeds into gameplay, too. Newcomer Geras can tamper with time as part of his move set. Learn him and you’ll be do undo damage by rewinding a few seconds, resurrect yourself or subtract seconds off the round timer. It’ll be fascinating to witness two pro-players who’ve fully got to grips with his potential. And that’s the great thing about Mortal Kombat 11. If you’re not concerned with its story and character politics, you can just enjoy its highly polished fighting mechanics. The rebuilt fighting system NetherRealm Studios is clearly not content on incremental updates. Even on first hands-on, Mortal Kombat 11 is a different beast from its predecessor. Combo focus seems to be weighed towards shorter, more brutish displays of power (and muscle memory) that arguably feel welcomingly old-school compared to the lengthy juggle strings of MKX. As for special moves, Scorpion’s yo-yo-like spear twirling, Sub-Zero’s ice shuriken and axe are early highlights. From a purely visual standpoint, the creativity behind Skarlet’s weaponized blood and the fearsome, new-gen look to returning fan-favorite Baraka promise plenty of new showstopper combos. Even the classics get an overhaul: Raiden’s famous ‘superman’ can be stalled on deployment. Let the mind-games begin. Character customization is a major new advancement seemingly influenced by Injustice 2, fusing aesthetic preference with moveset partiality to better tailor your MK main to your preferred fight style. Couple that with collectable attribute points to spend as you wish to shape the strengths of your chosen kombatant, the degree of variation and gameplay depth increases massively. Mortal Kombat 11 seems eager to bring something different to a genre it’s help define over two decades. “Change… I always feel like changing the game up is important,” says Ed Boon when asked about the franchise’s longevity, suggesting it is a careful balance of the old and new. Of taking a fresh approach to the best history has to offer. “There’s a nostalgia itch,” he continues, saying that as much as everyone remembers where they were when they heard a particular song the first time, you always remember your first fatality. “If you can scratch that itch, and add something new… I think that’s one of the variables that allows us to keep it at this level.” View the full article
  18. Humble’s first mixed-publisher bundle of PlayStation games is here, and this time, it’s indie. A great lineup of developers is teaming up with PlayStation for the Humble Indie PlayStation Bundle 2019, a limited-time promotion available at HumbleBundle.com. The bundle will feature over $239 worth of games, all for PS4 (SIEA regions only). Like all Humble Bundles, it’s a brief offering, available only from 11 a.m. PT on January 29 until 11 a.m. PT on February 12. If you’re not familiar with how Humble Bundles work, you pay what you want for your bundle, with higher tiers unlocking more games. No matter what price you choose, you can allow the default split of your payment or you can choose where the money goes: between the developers and publishers, Humble Bundle, and/or charity. In the “Humble” tradition, the Humble Indie PlayStation Bundle 2019 contributes a portion of the proceeds to charity. When you purchase the bundle, you can support GameChanger, Save the Children, the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, and/or a charity of your choice from Humble’s list of over 30,000 organizations. The following games are included in the bundle: For $1 or more, you get: Grim Fandango Remastered: This epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore. The Bard’s Tale: Take on the role of the Bard, a sardonic and opportunistic musician and adventurer. You can choose the Bard’s responses toward other characters, and each choice changes the course of events in the game. InnerSpace: An exploration flying game set in the Inverse, a world of inside-out planets with no horizons. Soar through ancient skies and abandoned oceans to discover the lost history of this fading realm, where gods still wander. “Beat the average” price (at least 1¢ more than the current average bundle payment), to also get: Layers of Fear: A first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut – Standard Edition: Deck out your Ranger squad with the most devastating weaponry this side of the fallout zone, test the limits of your strategy skills, and bring justice to the wasteland. The choices are yours, but so are the consequences. The Talos Principle: A philosophical first-person puzzle game. Players are tasked with solving a series of increasingly complex puzzles woven into a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in an inevitably doomed world. Broken Age: A timeless coming-of-age story of barfing trees and talking spoons. Vella Tartine and Shay Volta are two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds. The player can freely switch between their stories, helping them take control of their own lives and dealing with the unexpected adventures that follow. Pay $15 or more to get everything above plus: Killing Floor 2: The outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has quickly spread. Upon tracking specimen clone outbreaks, players will descend into zed-laden hot zones and exterminate them. Killing Floor 2 ramps up the gore with a proprietary, high powered persistent blood system. Shadow Warrior 2: Wield a devastating combination of guns, blades, magic and wit to strike down the demonic legions overwhelming the world. Battle alongside allies online in four-player co-op or go it alone in spectacular procedurally-generated landscapes. 19. We sat down with Steve Kuroki, VP of Creative at nWay, to learn more about Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, up for pre-order at PlayStation Store starting today. What is Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid? Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a brand new console fighting game featuring the Power Ranger heroes and villains where players fight head to head in online and offline battle modes. The game uses traditional fighting game inputs that players are familiar with. Players create a team of three warriors of varying play styles and roles to battle their friends or other players online. How is this game different than other fighting games out there? First, this is the only Power Rangers fighting game on the PS4. We have given each character’s animation a lot of TLC to make sure they stay authentic to the source material — details that the biggest Power Rangers fans will care about. This will also make the game not only fun to play, but also fun to watch. Also, we are adopting an online-first model. This means that we want the game to feel alive and have longevity. We plan to do this by regularly rolling out new content — new characters and new stories — as well as host special events, missions, and online tournaments. To support a healthy online competitive community, we are lowering the barrier to entry with a starting price of $19.99, allowing more people to join the matchmaking pool. We just celebrated the 25th anniversary of Power Rangers — what characters do you plan on featuring in the game? We have shown Tommy, Jason, Gia and Lord Drakkon thus far. We plan to announce other fan favorite characters in the roster as we get closer to launch, so stay tuned! What type of battle mechanics can we expect to see implemented in Power Rangers: BFTG? The controls are similar to a traditional fighter — something like a Dragon Ball FighterZ or Marvel vs. Capcom series, so you can expect battle mechanics in the team-based fighting genre. What was the development process like? What engine is the game built on? We use Unity. We have a lot of experienced developers with a fighting game background on our team, so we can do a lot of fast development, get it into the hands of the designers and playtesters, and iterate on combat very quickly. We’ve also brought onboard Justin Wong to consult and help tune our game. With Justin’s experience as one of the most decorated fighting game pros, he’s helping us make sure this game stands on par with the other top competitive fighting games out there. What game modes will be available at launch? At launch, the game will feature online Ranked and Casual matches as well as a brand-new story written by the makers of the Shattered Grid Power Rangers comic series. This is an original story for the game. We will have more to share about the story later, as I know the Power Rangers fans would want to know. Are there plans to add any DLC to the game? If so, what kind of content will be available? Absolutely! We have 25 years of Power Rangers history to tap into and every fan has a different favorite Ranger, so we want to keep adding more and more warriors to the roster. We really want this game to have a long life, so in addition to new warriors, we also want to add new stories to play in the arcade mode. When can fans expect to get their hands on this game (and for how much)? Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid will be coming this Spring. The Standard Edition is $19.99 and the Digital Collector’s Edition is $39.99. View the full article
  20. Hello, Kingdom Hearts fans! I can’t believe this day is finally here! We’re extremely excited to launch Kingdom Hearts III on PlayStation 4 today. Sora and his friends have grown a tremendous amount since his story first began in Kingdom Hearts. As we head into the launch of Kingdom Hearts III, he’s become an incredibly strong and bright character supported by his trusty companions, Donald and Goofy, and his many friends he’s made over the course of the series. Sora’s journey is really a tale of the power of friendship, and how friends can come together to overcome hardship, support each other through difficult times and spread positivity within a dark world. As you get started in Kingdom Hearts III you’ll be able to adventure through an array of new worlds and make new friends from iconic Walt Disney Animation Studios films like Frozen and Pixar Animation Studios films including Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. and more. You’ll also be able to enjoy a variety of new and exciting features like the Attractions which build on the series iconic gameplay. Personally, I hope that fans will enjoy the updated Gummiship gameplay — I’m having a blast building new ships! It has been an honor to be a part of this series from the beginning. To think that it all started from a conversation in an elevator when Square Enix Japan was in the same building as Disney! I have so many fond memories surrounding Kingdom Hearts, from working on the games to meeting fans around the world at events. As I mentioned earlier, Kingdom Hearts has always been about the power of friendship, and the passion and positivity of the series’ fans demonstrates that it is a message they have taken to heart. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support and for following along on Sora’s incredible journey. We hope you enjoy what we’ve created for you! In closing, I’d like to leave you with my favorite quote: “My friends are my power!” Sincerely, Executive Producer, Shinji Hashimoto View the full article
  21. Discover The Creators is a PlayStation Store curation program in which we’ve asked some of the biggest names in the biz to pick their favorite PS4 games in order to help your find your next game to play. What I love about video games is how they can achieve a type of magic by combining art with technology to create powerful new experiences. But I don’t really consume a ton of different games. Instead I find a few each year that really move me, and I obsess about them — first immersing myself in the experience, and then trying to figure out how they work. From playing games as a little kid to leading a dev studio, it’s always been the same exercise: if a game casts a powerful spell over me, maybe if I learn how they did it, I could create magical new experiences for others? Here are some games that in their own ways captivated me — as a player and as a developer. Browse Casey’s Full List at PlayStation Store Inside I loved Playdead’s Limbo so I was really looking forward to Inside, and it exceeded my expectations. What impressed me so much about Inside is how it so seamlessly weaves clever gameplay mechanics and dramatic visuals to create a thought-provoking narrative. There are some particularly powerful instances of this, like a sequence where you must conform your movements to the behavior of a group to proceed. It has some moments of visual storytelling that will stay with me forever, and when it was all over Inside left me wondering about the higher meaning of what I experienced. Until Dawn I don’t play many survival horror games, but a friend recommended Until Dawn and I really enjoyed it. It’s scary, but not excessively gory or manipulative, and it builds an immersive story experience through interesting character moments and atmospheric tension. And yes, it scared the hell out of me more than a few times! It’s tough to evoke fear in a player without resorting to cheap scares, and I think Until Dawn does it well, through consistently strong execution — from the art direction and acting performances (including Rami Malek) to its novel approach to visualizing player decisions through the butterfly effect. It’s a game that I still come back to now and then, when I’m playing in the dark late at night and want to see if it can still creep me out. Grand Theft Auto V I’ve played every GTA and enjoyed them all, but never played very far into the story. I just had fun with them as open-world sandboxes. At first I did the same with GTAV, but the world itself was so huge and well-executed, I wanted to get the most out of the game and started pursuing the storyline. It’s the first GTA that I ever finished, and I think it doesn’t get enough credit for the quality of storytelling and narrative innovations it delivers. Even now, it’s still my go-to game for when I just want to relax and escape to a digital world. Thimbleweed Park For me this one captures a different kind of magic: nostalgia. As a kid I played a lot of point and click adventure games, so I was excited to play a new one by a legend of the genre, Ron Gilbert. It’s got lots of quirky puzzles, and tons of memorable characters with funny writing and great voice acting. But what makes it really special is how it recreates the best elements of the genre while subtly introducing new design and creative elements that make it feel contemporary. Unravel 2 I played through all of Unravel 2 with my 10-year old son, and it was probably the most rewarding co-op game experience I’ve ever had. Its clever yarn-swinging mechanic provides some really challenging puzzles, but they’re so well-tuned that we never got stuck. We figured out how to proceed by experimenting cooperatively, and the experimenting itself was fun to do. Much of what I loved about the game was the problem-solving chatter it provoked between my son and I. And in between the tougher challenges we appreciated the joyful movement system and gorgeous artwork. Unravel 2 got us talking about the symbolism of the experience and the topics it subtly explored about childhood (bullying, siblings, loneliness…) and it’s one of my favorite examples of the power of games as an art form. Head over to PlayStation Store now to browse Casey’s list as well as picks curated by Cory Barlog, Yoko Taro, Ed Boon, and more. View the full article

  23. Hey, True Believers! Christos Gage here, one of the writers of Marvel’s Spider-Man, available exclusively on PlayStation 4 – and more than a few Spidey-related comics like the recent Spider-Geddon event which our web-slinger starred in. If you’ve seen all the Easter Eggs in the game, you’ve probably surmised that I, like the rest of the team, am a gigantic and longtime comic book fan. Which is why I was so excited by Marvel’s tease on January the 8th that the fabulous Fantastic Four are back in the spotlight – and back in Marvel Games – as part of Marvel’s “World’s Greatest Week.” To celebrate, we’ve been working with Insomniac Games to include some fantastic content, available in today’s patch 1.14 for Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4! “But what do the Fantastic Four have to do with Spider-Man?” you may ask. Or maybe you don’t – because you know that Spidey has a long history with the Fantastic Four, going back to 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1, when our rookie wall-crawler tried to join the team – only to end up fighting them! That was just the beginning of many years of adventure (including the 2010 Spider-Man/Fantastic Four miniseries written by yours truly and drawn by Mario Alberti) that has led us to today, with the new Fantastic Four comic written by longtime Spidey-scribe and game story contributor Dan Slott. There have been too many cool Spidey/Fantastic Four moments to count, but one of the most memorable in their illustrious history was in Amazing Spider-Man #258, when Spidey swung by the Fantastic Four’s headquarters for help with the alien symbiote he was wearing as a costume (that’s right, it later became Venom). The Fantastic Four got it off, but then Spidey was left in his underpants (we’d never do something that silly in the game…wait, I’m being told we did). So Spidey borrowed a Fantastic Four costume…but they don’t have masks! So, to conceal Peter Parker’s secret identity, his frenemy, the Human Torch, gave Spidey a grocery bag to wear on his head. As The Thing might say, what a revoltin’ development! Another chapter in their shared story came when Spidey actually joined the Fantastic Four, then calling themselves the Future Foundation, and they all wore cool black and white costumes. Hey, Dan wrote many of those issues, and I scripted one or two myself! That suit was awesome looking because – but you don’t want to hear me yap, look for yourself! How sweet is that? The Bombastic Bag-Man and the Future Foundation suit – and they can be yours to use in the game simply by downloading patch 1.14 for the game by connecting online to the PlayStation Network. But what’s that you say, web-heads? You want to see how they actually look in-game? Well I have some good news for you! At 2pm Pacific today, you can check out Insomniac Games’ livestream where they will be playing the game with both of the new suits! Just go to www.twitch.tv/insomniacgames at 2pm Pacific. And once again – THANK YOU from all of us at Marvel, Insomniac, and PlayStation for the unbelievable reception you’ve given our game. It was a labor of love, made by fans for fans and we hope you enjoy this special new content! If you haven’t picked up Marvel’s Spider-Man yet, make sure you pick up your copy today, available exclusively on PlayStation 4. Looking forward to seeing your #PS4Share in the new suits!
