  2. In the not-so-distant future, a rogue AI has taken control of earth and enslaved humanity. On their 18th birthday, every human is given one chance to earn their freedom by playing and defeating the AI at their favorite game: Holoball. Equipped with only a paddle and your own skill, do you have what it takes to defeat your opponent and earn your freedom? Holoball is a futuristic take on racquetball, set in a Bladerunner/Tron inspired universe. The player, with paddle in hand, smashes and slices the ball in an attempt to score, whilst defending their own net. The harder the player hits the ball, the faster it goes; your timing and athleticism determine the outcome, and by the time you’re done playing you will be sweating. The LooksWhile I was away at PAX East, Shawn had developed a small Pong/Paddle Ball VR demo. Once I returned home I got the chance to try it, and it ended up being extremely fun to just hit a ball in VR. I was then tasked with making this game look interesting, and coming up with an overall theme/story. We ended up throwing around a few ideas, including a grungy “junkball†theme, a minimalist clean glossy theme, and a few others. There was one major caveat, though: we were a 2D-only game studio, zero experience at all with 3D. So whatever we decided, we had to make sure it was reasonable and achievable with just the two of us. We were both fond of the retrofuture, neon chrome style that has been re-emerging as of late, so we quickly became attached to it as an overall concept that was within our means. Then, inspired by the Blood Dragon cover art, I began to learn 3D modeling so I could recreate that world in VR. After a lot of trial and error, endless YouTube tutorials, and online training, I finally felt comfortable enough to create our arena, then eventually all the other assets. The end result? Holoball looks like what the 80’s thought the future, and VR, would look like. This aesthetic brought the whole project together, feeling cohesive, congruent, and — most importantly — exciting to interact with in VR. The FeelsWhen we first began developing in VR it quickly became apparent that the small things make all the difference. Multiple layers of subtle effects can add up to much more than the sum of their parts. We took this to heart and ran with it. In Holoball we used finely tuned haptic vibrations to make the paddle feel alive in your hand, and shudder when you nail those smash shots. We paid special attention to spatialized 3D sound effects for ball bounces and explosions, increasing the depths of the world around you. We then found some amazing synthwave tracks by Dance with the Dead and integrated them directly into the world. As you play, the entire world pulses to the beat of the music, further sinking you into the world and dialing up the immersion. Another powerful aspect of VR that we realized early on was scale. Our brains are easily mesmerized by large structures, and in VR the sense of scale is very convincing. So, we scaled everything up! The arena got bigger, the ball got faster, and the end result is an extreme sense of power and awe, which really gets the adrenaline pumping. The final layer of immersion, bringing it all together, is the enemy AI. Constantly taunting you, and belittling your efforts, things quickly become personal. As you defend your sweet 80’s ride, you will want nothing more than to beat this guy, and shut him up for good! With the anger, comes the joy when you finally prevail, and when it’s all over, standing there in victory, you will have completely forgotten you’re actually in a living room, wearing a helmet with two glowing lights in your hands! The FutureThe gaming industry as a whole is growing considerably every year. The emergence and accessibility of do-it-yourself game development has empowered creatives around the world. What used to be seemingly impossible tasks for small teams have been made possible, easier, and in exponentially less time than ever before. PS VR has aided this even further, giving devs a brand new platform in which to captivate and move gamers like never before. Holoball launching on PS VR marks a major milestone for TreeFortress. We are proud and humbled to be among the developers we admire, and excited to be a part of the PlayStation family. Holoball was a few “firsts†for us: first 3D game, first VR game, and our first game on PlayStation. Coming from a studio that had only done 2D games, VR had intrigued and tempted us to break out of our comfort zone and try something new and exciting. What started out as a simple “ping-pong in VR†tech demo evolved and took shape into something we’re extremely proud of. This game is just our first step into VR, and we plan on continuing to bring you great, high quality experiences for years to come. If you have any questions about the game, or about our process, please ask them below, and we’ll be sure to get back to you! We hope players enjoy the game as much as we enjoyed making it. Get out there and break a sweat, fighting for your freedom in Holoball! View the full article

  6. On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree. On the second day of Christmas we got divorced. Which worked out quite nicely because that freed up my spare time for the third day of Christmas, on which date PlayStation gave to me: a driving game where you have to race multiple tracks at the same time! That’s right, Christmas is coming early this year regardless of your marital status: DriveDriveDrive is launching on PS4 on December 13! Eagle eyed fans of the genre will already have noted that DriveDriveDrive is all set to revolutionize driving games and is being published by the excellent, humanoid-based lifeforms at Choice Provisions! For those without freakish bird of prey eyes, though, here’s a quick summary of the situation: DriveDriveDrive is a driving game about racing multiple tracks at the same time. It’s kind of a mixture of arcade racing, repeated stupidity, track management, repeated stupidity, repeated stupidity. Why is the game so repeatedly stupid? Well, that’s down to the AI that controls all the cars in the game that you yourself are not in control of. In DriveDriveDrive, AI is an initialism for Artificial Idiocy. Everybody is disastrously bad at driving, apart from you, and you can only control one car at a time. So you must manage your cars across up to four tracks in real time to score as highly as possible, hopping between them to save them from the vicious nature of our Intelligent Stupidity engine. Well, I’m glad I cleared that up. There are a number of other excellent things about DriveDriveDrive that I am itching to smell you: Incredible soundtrack by synth-prog post-rock legends Zombi! 100 tracks to race in Campaign and Offensive Modes! Potential for more than 18.37 quintillion tracks to race via user generation! Create, share, and rate tracks easily in the in-game track creator! Four different game modes: Purist, Arcade, Collection, and Time Trial! Up to four-player multiplayer! More than nine unique environments! Less than 11 unique vehicles! Less than 11 unique environments! More than nine unique vehicles! Imagine the possibilities: create a track, duplicate it up to four times, spin the tracks around, crash them into each other, share your monstrosity with the world, and race your friends on it in multiplayer! Each track has its own gravity so you can do whatever you like in the Track Creator. I’m really excited to see what you come up with… Apologies if it seems like I’m getting carried away, but I really love this game and everyone who plays it seems to as well! I have even gone so far as to prepare several blog posts about how I’ve never felt so lonely even though the runaway success of DriveDriveDrive has left me universally adored by the public, massively respected by all my peers, and impossibly rich. But that’s for later — stay on point, Gordon. So: DriveDriveDrive is coming to your PS4 on December 13. Be like a flooded cellar: get seriously pumped! View the full article
  7. With the PS4 launch of The Last Guardian just weeks away, take a gander at our new CG trailer that debuted in US theaters this week. Last week I spoke with celebrated creative director Fumito Ueda about his personal inspirations, the connections between The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus, and how to expand the influence of the videogame medium. Read on for highlights from our conversation! On realizing the full initial vision for The Last Guardian: “I’m going to be little hard on myself here… but to say I’ve done everything 100% is not completely true. As a creator, there’s always a little more you feel you could have done. When I finished Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, I felt exactly the same way. Having said that, I think the staff from Sony and Gendesign has put everything, every ounce of energy we had, and poured it into the project.†On the personal inspirations behind The Last Guardian: “Trico is a hybrid of sorts, a mixture of a cat, a dog, a bird, and the like. It might represent a motif. When I was younger, I grew up in a home that had a bunch of animals. My experiences with them are great memories that I still have. In creating Trico, I didn’t really have to do any specific research because it’s a creature that obviously doesn’t exist. But it’s really all based on my childhood memories, the way I interacted with the animals, the way they reacted to me.†On comparisons to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus: “The way I see it, maybe they are from the same world, or the same universe. But anything further than that is really up to the player’s imagination. Everyone has a different level of relationship with the two previous titles, so we wouldn’t dictate that it is or it isn’t. It’s up to the player.†On his proudest accomplishment with The Last Guardian: “I would have to say that it’s what we were able to accomplish with the character of Trico. Its behavior, everything about it. We were basically breathing life into a creature that has never been created, a new character, which is very difficult. How does it feel to actually feed Trico? I want players to experience what that feels like.†On other gaming inspirations: “There are some games that have opened my eyes and influenced me in big ways. Prince of Persia is one, and Another World. This may come as a surprise, but Virtua Fighter is another… What they all have in common is the intricacy of the animation. I’m always curious in finding ways that animation can help breathe new life into characters — that’s an element that will always appeal to me.†On expanding the appeal of videogames: “It’s a difficult question to answer, but I think that maybe a lower barrier to entry or skill required. And I’m not saying that games need to be easy or casual or anything like that. But when you think about the origin of video games, arcade games, you put in 100 yen and you got to play for maybe three minutes. There’s basically an end, or a restriction, that is placed. Sometimes that can be a little intimidating.†“On console games, there’s no need to put a time limit or game over screen — we want people to play longer. But again, whether it’s skill requirements, or continuous challenges until you feel like giving up… if they felt slightly more accessible, then maybe more people would enjoy playing video games. Having said that, as long as we define what we do as video games in this business, then the experience needs to be very unique [to that medium]. Striking that balance is not an easy task.†On the long-anticipated launch of The Last Guardian: “It’s quite simple… at the end of playing through the game, if the player feels the existence of Trico, like it’s really there, then we have accomplished what we set out to do.†View the full article

  9. Just because it’s the end of the world doesn’t mean we can’t still have some good-old-fashioned PVP fun! The post-apocalyptic setting for Let It Die provides the perfect backdrop for competition and glory! Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the Tower of Barbs and had a good chance to die a few dozen times, you may start to notice the world around you changing just a little. And in a very literal way, you may become your own worst enemy! Haterfication occurs on death and it’s the process by which a player’s death data becomes an incredibly deadly AI opponent. These “Haters†can be seen roaming the world with noticeable gamer tags. This should act as both a warning sign to avoid a deadly encounter as well as a beacon of hope for exclusive, useful loot! If you can defeat a Hater, the process can be rewarding indeed. Haters generated by other players can provide exclusive items; whereas, defeating your own Hater allows you to return it to your storage freezer as a usable Fighter character. Haters provide an exciting challenge and helpful opportunity for resources, but they are just one element of the unique, asynchronous multiplayer experience waiting for players in Let It Die. After progressing through the first few floors of the Tower of Barbs, players gain access to the insanely creepy robotic NPC, Tetsuo. This clunky, shuffling monstrosity offers players the chance to sign up for a team and start raiding enemy Waiting Rooms. During a raid, you can steal enemy resources (Kill Coins and SPLithium) and accrue points for your team by defeating enemy Fighters. There’s also a chance that a Fighter you’ve defeated will be knocked unconscious, allowing you to pick them up and drag them back to your base. While captured, enemy Fighters will remain trapped in your bathroom and generate a set amount of SPLithium over time. They also become inaccessible to their original user until they pay a set fee or rescue them during a revenge raid. As you and other members of your team continue to raid Waiting Rooms (individually) and defeat other teams’ Fighters, your team rank will increase. Go for glory and help your team reach the top of the leaderboards while simultaneously boosting your personal ranking within the team. So how do you defend your own base? First off, make sure your Fighters are the best! You’ve got your own personal meat locker meant for storing Fighter bodies. Be sure to buy powerful ones when they become available and go on a few Tower runs to beef them up. Earn some EXP, gather up resources, and head back to your base. When enemies come to attack your Waiting Room, they’ll have to deal with the Fighters you’ve set in place to defend your goods. It’s important to build up multiple Fighters so you can go on your own adventures while leaving your home base well protected. Just as you’re able to snag your opponent’s resources, they can do the same to you. Upgrading your Buffalo Bank (Kill Coin storage) and SPLithium Tank will not only allow you to accumulate more resources, it will also increase their HP to allow them to survive longer during raids. Finally, if you are starving for resources and reputation, you can send Fighters you have in storage out on Expeditions. When you do so, they show up in another player’s world as a Hunter. Like Haters, they are quite tricky to defeat. The primary difference is that they will wander your opponent’s world for a set amount of time gathering up all kinds of useful goodies. If they can kill your opponent’s Fighter, they will also collect SPLithium. This roaming period lasts until their timer runs out or the enemy player can defeat the Hunter. There’s no punishment for having your Hunter defeated early, so feel free to send them out as often as you like. Just keep in mind, if they are out hunting, they aren’t protecting your base. And with that, you’re ready to start your quest toward infamy. Will you be the one to guide your team to the top of the charts? Climb the Tower of Barbs, build your army, and test your mettle. This is how we Let It Die! View the full article

  11. Brace yourselves: Persona 5 is now launching on April 4, 2017. I know, I know. It stings. But Persona 5 set the gold standard for Atlus with its launch in Japan, and we wanted to put the utmost care into ensuring it winds up the best when it launches in the west. And — and this is a very special “and†— we have some exceedingly good news for you in light of this delay: Persona 5 will have dual audio. For PS4 and PS3. We’re including it as DLC for logistical reasons, but it will be free, for forever. People have been asking for this since P5 was announced, and through herculean effort from just about every division of Atlus, we managed to arrange this. This was something we especially wanted to do for the Atlus Faithful, the ones who still appreciate our English dubs and respect all the effort we put into localizing. You all are the reason we get to do the jobs we do, so we’ve been fighting for this for a long while, and we are glad we can make this happen for all of those who support us and love our games. Oh, but I’m not done there. For those of you who are planning to attend PlayStation Experience in Anaheim this year, Atlus will be there. Along with a playable demo of Persona 5. If you’re going to be at PS Experience, we hope to see you there! Oh, and not that you needed any more reason to visit our booth, but there’s also going to be a Persona 5 collector’s card as well! More? Okay. Persona 5’s band of heroes are called the Phantom Thieves. They specialize at stealing stuff — they stole the first P5 gameplay and delivered it to us at E3, they even stole the freakin’ Tokyo Tower. Their most recent heist? They liberated a PS4 theme of Ryuji Sakamoto, and they’ve put it up on PlayStation Network right now. For free. Fortunately, the Atlus security is top-notch, and we’ll be removing it from PlayStation Network in 24 hours, but until then, we’re powerless to stop those who want to download it! I think that’s about everyth- oh wait! I just remembered, we’ve got another update for you. Those of you who’ve pre-ordered the “Take Your Heart†premium edition of Persona 5 may recall the placeholder art the last time we showed it off. Well, we’ve got an update to that too! The soundtrack CD now features Justine and Caroline, the twin wardens of the Velvet Room. The artbook and SteelBook are updated as well, and you can even see the final art of the box it all ships in. Check it out here. Phew! Ok, so if you need a minute to process all that, you can check out the first English gameplay of Persona 5 as we livestream it right now on Twitch! View the full article
  12. Hi everyone. This is Dan Adelman. I work with a number of indie studios to help them be as successful as possible. I’m super excited to announce that Mages of Mystralia by Borealys Games is officially confirmed for PS4! Mages of Mystralia is an action-adventure game in which you design your own custom spells to solve environmental puzzles and fight enemies. Imagine Gandalf. Merlin. Even Dumbledore. The power behind each of these mage archetypes stems from their wisdom. Their learning. Their experience. And yet in videogames, that’s a very difficult feeling to convey. Too often mage classes are implemented as range weapons and healers as part of a larger party. The player never earns a spell so much as unlocks it. When we set out to create Mages of Mystralia, we wanted players to feel like a mage. To master the ways of magic and create spells that are uniquely their own. To that end, a rich, powerful, and intuitive spell creation system is fundamental to the experience. To feel powerful and wise, you must first know what it’s like to be weak and unwise. In Mages of Mystralia, you play as Zia, a young girl who discovers one day that she has the gift of magic. In the Mystralia universe, magic is known to exist, but it is rare — and illegal. Zia goes into exile on a quest to learn the ways of magic and master her skills. Along the way, she discovers runes which can be combined in different ways to create new spells. There are potentially millions of ways to combine these runes, so as you master the system, you will be able to create spells that no one has ever seen before. At PAX, one journalist created a spell that shot a fireball which — when it hit its target — froze the enemy in place and dropped boulders on his head. Another person made a decoy version of Zia that spins around and shoots lightning bolts. We are extremely excited to announce that Mages of Mystralia will be coming to PS4 in Spring 2017! If you will be attending PlayStation Experience in Anaheim on December 3 and 4, you’ll be able to play through a complete area of the game, filled with different enemy types, puzzles, and some bonus secrets to uncover. We also have a webcomic that explores the lore of the Mystralia universe. Last but not least, if you sign up for our newsletter, we’ll send you updates about once a month with information about how development is going and some fun behind the scenes stuff! Looking forward to sharing more with the PS4 community as we get closer to launch in 2017! View the full article
  13. “Oh my god,†Joe Madureira exclaims before pondering the unexpected question for a second. “We knew we wanted it to be some sort of RPG reference, since those are the kinds of games we wanted to work on.†The co-founder of Airship Syndicate is recollecting the moment when his team hit upon a name for their independent outfit. The RPG inspiration is unsurprising (“Airship was something we loved — the visual image and the RPG flavor of itâ€), given how big a fan the comic book artist turned game creator is of the genre. Perfect example: upon leaving Marvel Comics in 1997 to co-found comics imprint Cliffhanger, his creator-owned debut Battle Chasers wore its fantasy RPG influences proudly. It’s a series and world he left — on a cliffhanger, no less — in 2001. He’d be the first to tell you he wasn’t expecting to return to it 15 years later through the lens of interactive entertainment. “I kind of had the feeling we should be doing something new,†he reminisces. There was a flirtation with doing a Metroidvania side-scroller at first, but ultimately Airship Syndicate settled on an RPG for its first project. Yet the “where†was a lot harder to choose than the “what.†“The more we worked on it, the more we thought ‘Battle Chasers has a lot of this stuff and is way cooler.'†The creator admits to feeling nervous at the adoption, though accepts that given the series adherence to the classic RPG archetypes, it lent itself perfectly to the genre. In the end, Battle Chasers helped the game’s profile when it launched on Kickstarter last year. “People that had never heard of it thought it was cool. Fans of the book were super-excited it was coming back. So it ended up being a great decision.†There are odd parallels between Madureira’s two careers. Just as he shifted from one of the biggest comic book companies in the world to co-found his own label, so too did he create a smaller development studio with fellow Vigil Games ex-staffers after it shuttered due to publisher THQ’s liquidation. The 12-strong team (backed by a dozen remote contractors) are housed in a small studio. Work’s fluid, creative checks a matter of looking over a monitor and offering input rather than waiting for weekly meetings (“I can literally see you doing it right there. It’s instant,†Joe says input opportunities). Everybody “wears many hatsâ€, and the unofficial mission statement seemingly boils down to “if an idea’s awesome, we’ll implement it, irrespective of who came up with it.†Everyone’s free to bring anything to the table, but the need of everyone’s A-game is a constant. Partly because of the near-continual queries by Kickstarter backers, partly due to the team’s own financial investments to get the game ready for its crowd-funding debut. “It keeps you accountable and they remind us on a regular basis that there is a clock ticking here,†the CEO muses. “We want to get the game out as badly as anyone else.†The title’s pencilled in for a summer 2017 release (“Right now we’ve got all the systems working. It’s just really building content at this pointâ€) and the game’s design reflects the era it’s launching in. Two decades ago it’d have been easy to imagine the finished product being an ode to Diablo hot wired to turn-based battles a la Final Fantasy. Inspirations that admittedly are still coded into the game’s DNA today: gameplay emphasis is on dungeon-crawling and a chess-like combat system. But you also note more current trends. Dungeons are randomly-generated, and different difficulty-based runs call into mind everything from Spelunky and other roguelikes to high score-chasing mobile titles. Thankfully altering difficulties isn’t a case of yanking enemy HP sliders up and friendly health bars down; enemy attacks will differ, dungeon layout will alter, treasure chests will drop randomized loot. Certain bosses only appear on certain star ratings. Re-roll, replay. You’ll be able to tinker with your team (three per party from a choice of six characters), craft weapons (there’ll be rare character skin unlockables and Easter Eggs as well) and progress the story (“totally brand new, self-sustained†and set after the comic series). Madureira pegs the tale as a Castlevania-esque fantasy-horror, set on an island overrun by the undead. With modern day Final Fantasy jettisoning turn-based systems in favor of real-time combat, Nightwar will appeal to those hungry for the classic style of yesteryear. You can count Joe Madureira as one. See it in his character designs (there’s more than a little Cloud Strife in the massive sword-wielding, tortured ex-soldier Garrison), their personalities (Knolan is every cankerous old man D&D wizard, Red Monika a sultry bounty hunter). But none are poor imitations, nor distant echoes of past glories. And as other franchise titans chase the cutting edge by envisioning futuristic wars and homogenising mechanics, a title with strict adherence to the classical genre form could be a welcome throwback. As the creator himself admits, it comes back to passion. Working on what you love. Madureira briefly ponders the studio name he and the team settled on again. “If you’re not a gamer it’s a kind of weird-sounding company. But whatever. We’re nerdy and we embrace it.†View the full article

Between the first Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) Free Play Weekend on PS4, to the debut of dynamic 4K visuals on PS4 Pro — and the Trip of a Lifetime giveaway — there’s a lot to be excited about in The Elder Scrolls Online! Whether you’re an existing part of The Elder Scrolls Online community on PS4 or are thinking about joining, here’s everything you need to know to get up to speed. The Elder Scrolls Online Free Play WeekendWe’re thrilled to announce our very first Free Play Weekend for The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4. This is a great opportunity to jump into the giant world of ESO and try it for yourself. You’ll be able to begin downloading the game on PlayStation Network this Wednesday, November 16 starting at 12:01 AM Eastern in North America. Simply navigate to The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on PlayStation Store, download the game, and create your ESO account. PlayStation Plus is not required to participate in the ESO Free Play Weekend. Once ESO is installed and you’ve created your account, you can log-in and begin your adventure in Tamriel. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re playing ESO on a Free Play Weekend account: You’ll have access to the full The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited base game, not including DLC game pack areas. Upon account creation, you’ll get 500 crowns to spend in the Crown Store on fun costumes, unique pets, helpful scrolls, and more. After the Free Play Weekend ends, you can continue right where you left off! Any characters you create, Crown Packs, or Crown Store items you purchase, as well as any progress you make during the Free Play Weekend, will carry over when you purchase the game The Free Play Weekend will run until November 20 at 11:59 PM Eastern in North America. In celebration of the Free Play Weekend, Crown Packs and all versions of ESO are currently available at a discounted price. There’s never been an easier way to jump into ESO. Check PlayStation Store for details. More great news — playing ESO during the Free Play Weekend also qualifies you to enter our One Tamriel “Trip of a Lifetime†sweepstakes! Five lucky winners will choose a travel package that will take them to one of five exotic locations. Each package will include full accommodations, meals, and exciting adventure excursions with expert local guides! Visit our contest page to register, read the official rules, and learn more about the five amazing trip packages you could win. And of course, if you are an existing player — you’re already qualified. Head over to the contest page and register to win your incredible adventure! The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 ProWe were so excited that The Elder Scrolls Online was among the launch titles for PS4 Pro, delivering the vast world of Tamriel in incredible dynamic 4K on launch day via a free update. Even if you’re not using a 4K screen, there are still benefits to playing ESO on a PS4 Pro. The PS4 Pro allows you to play in 1080p Enhanced Mode, which includes graphical enhancements to ambient occlusion and water reflections, as well as improved shadow fidelity. In the gameplay trailer above, you can see ESO running in 4K on a PS4 Pro. (Just remember: in order to experience this trailer in 4K, you will need to view it on a 4K display.) If you’re joining our Free Play Weekend on PS4 this weekend, or playing ESO on PS4 Pro, we’d love to hear about your experiences! See you in Tamriel, adventurers! View the full article
  17. Kazunori Yamauchi is very serious when it comes to motorsport. Not only is the Polyphony Digital president creator of one of the most acclaimed video game racing series of all time, he’s a keen driver, too. And talking to him about how the additional power of PS4 Pro has supercharged Gran Turismo Sport reveals that the line between the game and the real thing are blurring quicker than you may think. “PS4 Pro marks a historical moment,†says Yamauchi-san, speaking with us at a media event in London earlier this month. “It’s the first time video games are going to exceed and better the quality of images in movies, broadcasting, and packaged media out there.†With GT Sport, a powerful engine is everything — and PS4 Pro pushes the game into an eye catching fast lane featuring dynamic 4K, targeted 60 frames per second, HDR, an 18 GB VPS uncompressed stream, and wide color support. What that all means is the races are smoother, slicker, and more vibrant than they’ve ever been. And as any car enthusiast knows, the details are part of what drives the passion. “I think the world of 4K and 60 FPS is a pinnacle for the games industry, and to be able to provide that sort of quality on a home console is something special,†says Yamauchi-san. “All the cars look fantastic in 4K in terms of the detail improvements, but if you look at it from the aspect of HDR and wide color, about 11% of the cars in the real world today don’t fit into the standard color space that was possible in games up until now. “Cars like Ferrari… it wasn’t actually possible to accurately represent that particular distinctive red in games unless you used the wide color space that’s now available in GT Sport. So the brightly colored cars out there are now going to look perfect in the game.†It may sound like something you’d take for granted, but it’s taken technology to catch up with Polyphony’s ambitions in order to get to this stage. “In order to support HDR compatibility, we had to start with the development for a capable camera because there are no devices out there that were able to capture images in HDR and wide color,†explains Yamauchi-san. “Doing that kind of data gathering wasn’t easy when we first started, so we had to design systems for the camera. In the past we’ve used RGB image sensors, but we had to utilize a spectra base image sensor to capture the proper colors and light that could not be recorded by RGB sensors in the past.†Don’t think that Polyphony is neglecting PlayStation VR enhancements in GT Sport, either. Yamauchi-san is eager to use PS VR to make sure you feel extra special behind the wheel. “The raw, live feel that you get when you sit in the cockpit of a car using PS VR is something that wasn’t possible in GT before.†While remaining coy over what exactly to expect in GT Sport once you put on the PS VR headset — aside from the thrill of high speed, first-person driving, of course — Yamauchi-san couldn’t resist revving the engine on a couple of details. “The tracks are very interesting in VR,†he smiles. “But we’re letting you explore the environments in virtual reality, such as the interior of cars. I think that kind of subtle usage is best for VR.†There’s clearly more info to reveal farther down GT Sport’s spectacular looking track, but between PS4 Pro and PS VR, things are only going to get better. Racing fans will have a lot to look forward to once Polyphony’s PS4 muscle car gets off the starting grid in 2017, but if you’re a GT fan this will be extra special. “When we created GT games in the past, people always used to ask is there any way that the graphics quality could get any better, because it was already incredible. But with GT Sport you can really feel the light of the new world in Gran Turismo — and it’s an experience I’d love players to feel.†View the full article
  18. Hello! I’m Andreas Zecher from indie studio Spaces of Play. I’m really excited to leave dark cold Sweden, and fly out to Anaheim to show you our game Future Unfolding at PlayStation Experience! Future Unfolding is an action adventure for PS4 that is all about exploration. Your goal is to unfold the mysteries and secrets hidden in the beautiful landscapes around you. There are no tutorials, and no one is telling you what to do. You discover the surreal, dream-like world and everything you can do in it yourself while you play. From the very beginning we designed the nature and wildlife to feel responsive and alive. Trees, grass, and stones move when you push through them. Even the ground can move and open up below you. We developed our own game engine to render a painterly art style with a lot of detail at a targeted 60 frames per second. Our dynamic sound track underlines the sense of a world full of life. During your journey you encounter different types of wild animals. Some of them are friendly and help you to solve puzzles that open up new areas. Other animals are dangerous — deadly, even. You need to avoid them, or find ways to turn them into friendly creatures. You can leave the beaten path at any time and hunt down secrets in the forgotten woods. Or go explore in hidden caves. It’s okay to get lost — a detailed auto-map helps you to orient yourself. Over time you map out more and more of the vast environments. There is always a way out. But where to go after? 19. I’m excited to announce Fantasy Strike, a fighting game that’s coming at the genre from a different angle. We’re stripping out a lot of complexity that fighting games usually have and building everything around the idea of simple controls and easy execution while still being a serious, competitive e-sport. My background in fighting games goes back more than 25 years. I played Street Fighter 1 in arcades as a kid (Yes, really). I played many versions of Street Fighter and Guilty Gear competitively in many tournaments, including three Top 8 finishes at Evolution. I was also lead designer of Street Fighter HD Remix. I love fighting games, but they’re generally really hard to play. I’ve been frustrated for a long time that so much of the fun the genre has to offer is inaccessible to most people. I’ve made several efforts to bring the fun of fighting games to a wider audience. My card game called Yomi distills many of the dynamics that occur in fighting games down to a tabletop form, so even people with no dexterity skills can experience parts of what makes the genre great. My book, Playing to Win, explains the mindset of top fighting game players, so that everyone else can try to learn how the great players think. On Street Fighter HD Remix, I was able to slightly simplify the inputs to do some moves, and generally make the game a bit more accessible. But not until now have I been able to make an entirely new fighting game from the ground up, centered around the idea of including as many players as possible. Fantasy Strike has simple 1-button inputs for all moves. It doesn’t even have crouching, so even movement is simple. But let me tell you about my favorite feature, which is actually a 0-button input. Throws used to be really powerful in fighting games, but after years of players complaining that “throws are cheap,†developers made them weaker and weaker. I think that’s the wrong way to go about things though, because powerful throws are important to prevent a game from being too defensive. So in Fantasy Strike, we have powerful throws, but we have a unique feature that means you can always get out of them if you expect them. That feature is called a “yomi counter.†To perform it, you let go of your controls. That’s right, you let go of the d-pad and buttons, and though you are completely vulnerable to any hit or combo, if an opponent tries to throw you, you will automatically reverse it. You’ll throw them instead, and you’ll do it with a fancy, awesome animation special to your character. You’ll even get full super meter on top of that. Yomi counters are a bit hard to pull off in the heat of battle, but not because they are difficult to perform (obviously!). They require a really good read, but it’s oh-so-sweet when you land them. They are hype tournament moments waiting to happen. Right now we have 8 of the original cast of 10 characters from the Yomi card game in Fantasy Strike. We’re going to do a whole lot more polish and tuning, add more characters and modes, and implement online play using the excellent GGPO networking technology. Though we don’t want to ship until it’s truly ready, we love showing previews to our fans the whole way through development. Getting community involvement as we build the game keeps us on the right track, and it’s also way more fun that way. Stop by our booth at PlayStation Experience December 3 and 4, and check out our progress so far! View the full article
  20. In sword-slinging action RPG Nioh, there are times where you will be afraid. And you will die. Often. Probably in some horrible fashion involving fire, ice, and/or sharpened metal. But that’s all part and parcel of a game where death is not the end, but merely the beginning of overcoming a variety of terrible foes. It’s a thrilling combat driven experience set in 16th century Japan that has you clammily clutching your DualShock 4 for dear life in desperate battles against vicious fiends and brutal monstrosities. It will not be easy, but developer Team Ninja is making sure every sweaty step is one you’re going to enjoy. If you’re as excited as we are for Nioh when it launches on February 7 in North America, then you’ll be delighted to hear that, as of today, pre-orders are live across PlayStation Store and your local retailers. On PlayStation Store, we’re offering two editions of the game: Standard Edition The full game Digital Deluxe The full game Weapon pack with five new weapons PS4 Avatar Season Pass Pre-order either edition to receive: The Nioh armor to equip in-game, inspired by the ancient statues that stand guard at temples across Japan. And a Nioh Dynamic Theme for PS4. In addition, if you pre-order Nioh or the Digital Deluxe Edition on PlayStation Store or purchase in the first two weeks after launch, you’ll also receive the Crimson Master Armor, another in-game armor but this time based on legendary samurai Yukimura Sanada. “We created Nioh to be a very challenging game, so we put a lot of thought into the design of its difficulty,†says Game Director Yosuke Hayashi. “For example, we had an enemy that throws a quick jab at you and causes immense damage, and it was difficult to avoid and defend against. So now these enemies may still attack you with the same level of damage, but we redesigned the movement of the jab itself so that it gives players a split second to dodge or block.†The rigorous alpha and beta testing that Nioh has undergone has only helped shape the PS4 game for the better. It’s been your all-important feedback which has — rather ironically — removed Team Ninja’s fear that many years of hard work were going to potentially miss the mark. “Nioh is a new IP, so in a lot of ways we wanted to get users’ feedback and understand whether we were going in the right direction,†explains Hayashi-san. “For example, some of the feedback we got from our users was that they didn’t want the battles to involve too many enemies, because it would be too challenging. So we looked at more one-on-one encounters where greater skill was required.†“That we were able to get people to like the game during the alpha and beta testing is something I’m really happy about. So as we get closer to launch, we’re putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to meet those high expectations.†That sense of anticipation has only grown with Nioh’s recently announced PS4 Pro enhancements, something Hayashi-san is delighted to take advantage of. “I’ve always felt that games on PlayStation were very visually compelling, but now seeing these games on PS4 Pro, my perception has exceeded that.†“Gamers don’t compromise on things like frame rate, so we really focused on maximizing the power of those particular aspects and introduced lots of visual options. For example, one is to play the game at a targeted 60 frames per second at1080p — it was great that I was able to realize this through PS4 Pro.†Of course, when you’re facing a giant, acid spitting, spider-bodied seductress, you may regret the visual fidelity on your screen. And given that you may need many hours to complete Nioh, there’ll be no shortage of gritty, challenging encounters. “We wanted to create impressionable bosses,†laughs Hayashi-san. “So you’ll discover a few when you play!†That said, as you’re assuming the role of the skillful Western samurai William Adams (based on a real life historical figure, no less), you have more than your fair share of ways to dispatch the horde of enemies which await. That includes a three-stance combat system, magic, and the ability to wield a myriad of weapons, such as dual katanas. And if that’s not enough, the smiling Game Director has a few pointers to potentially help reduce the ol’ mind-killer. “Don’t fear death,†Hayashi-san says. “While Nioh is a challenging game, if you carefully pay attention to the movements of your enemies, you’ll be able to find chances for an opening.†“And don’t be afraid to seek help from other players online from our great community, as there’s always someone out there who can offer guidance. Nioh is really about self-improvement. And in an era of games where there’s less lasting “death†in action titles, I want you to feel like you’ve genuinely accomplished something once you’ve completed it.†So, is your steely soul ready to handle the nightmarish creatures that await you in Nioh? 21. Hi, everyone! Krillbite here, developers of the first-person horror game Among the Sleep on PS4. Today we are excited to announce that our next game Mosaic is also coming to PS4! With Mosaic, we decided to go for a different genre than our previous work. It retains the same “soul†and attention to atmosphere and narrative, but we are now making (it’s actually difficult to pinpoint the genre) something of a point-and-click adventure game! Mosaic is about a person living a bleak and repetitive life in a cold, systematic city. Every day looks and feels the same way and you have no meaning or sense of purpose in your life — until one day, when strange things start to happen around you and everything changes. We’re also excited that we’ll be at PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California on December 3 and 4 presenting Mosaic! We’ll have a booth where you’ll find more information about the project, and be able to meet us. You can find us in the app for the event, and locate our booth. Come say hi, we’d love to talk to you about Mosaic, Among the Sleep, and videogames in general! We launched Among the Sleep on PS4 in December last year and the reception has been wonderful. It’s great hearing your thoughts and seeing you share your reactions to the game. It meant very much to us, so thank you for your support! If you haven’t played it yet, Among the Sleep is a psychological horror game from the perspective of a small child. You can check out the blog we did on it last year. For our new game Mosaic, we’re currently in the middle of production, and can’t wait to show you more of it in the coming year! We hope to launch it late 2017. Talk soon! View the full article

  24. The new year for the Call of Duty team is usually about two months earlier than it is for the rest of the world. In early November a new title launches and the community starts a new experience. This is happening right now as Call of Duty fans everywhere are just getting their hands on Infinite Warfare. The Call of Duty new year is also something that happens with Call of Duty esports. Last year, with Black Ops III, we introduced the Call of Duty World League (CWL) and created a great foundation for Call of Duty esports. More than 1.2 billion minutes of live competitive Call of Duty was watched with more than 121 million views over the course of the season. The fans of Call of Duty esports are looking forward to this new year of esports, and so are we. The CWL team is excited to be a part of PlayStation Experience for some big announcements about the 2017 season and a special invitational tournament to kick off the new year. Season structure, game updates, and key events will all be discussed as part of the livestream prior to the invitational start. The invitational will take place during PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, CA, on December 3 and 4. As part of the eight-team invitational, Splyce, Team Elevate, Rise Nation, Faze Clan, Luminosity Gaming, Orbit, Renegades, and Evil Geniuses are scheduled to compete during the first official LAN broadcast of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. We encourage all our fans to come and check out the action live. If you can’t tune in live, we will be streaming all the action on MLG.tv and twitch.tv/CallofDuty. Stay tuned to the CWL on Twitter for livestream information and more CWL news. Get tickets to PlayStation Experience right here! View the full article
  25. Welcome! October marked the launch of PlayStation VR, so we’re adding a new section to our monthly Top Downloads post. One may think a game about working wouldn’t make for an especially entertaining time, but players can’t seem to get enough of Owlchemy Labs’ hilarious VR debut Job Simulator, which was the most-downloaded PlayStation VR game last month. Batman: Arkham VR and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood rounded out the top three virtual reality debut titles. Battlefield 1 has turned a lot of heads by taking the series back to the early 1900’s, nabbing it the number one PS4 spot in October. Other PS4 highlights included Skyrim Special Edition Mafia III, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and Titanfall 2. (Whew, there are a lot of good games coming out!)
