Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle delivers all of the action from the popular anime to PlayStation 4, and that includes storylines beginning with Season 1 all the way through the end of Season 3, Part 2. That’s right, the game is working hand-in-hand with the show’s creators to recreate the most heart-pounding Titan battles (as well as original stories!), including an intriguing character development, the Armin Titan. “To endure becoming a monster, you have to discard your humanity.” — Armin Arlert Armin, known to Attack on Titan’s fans as the introverted scout and quick-witted soldier, has eaten the villainous Bertolt in a recent anime episode, leaving the impression that he acquired the power to transform into the Colossal Titan. And that transformation is already complete in the upcoming PS4 game releasing on July 5. Summoning the Armin Titan in the game’s all-new Character Episode mode — a branching storyline that covers all of Season 3 through three different perspectives (the Scout Regiment, the 104th Cadets, and the enemies of humanity known as the Warriors) — players will now be able to call on Armin’s assistance to help smash enemies at will thanks to the giant-sized Armin Titan. Unlocking Armin Titan in Character Episode mode then enables you to experience the fun of pounding enemies as the skinless giant in some of the game’s other modes as well. But that’s not all of the new Season 3 content included in Final Battle, as the upcoming game also introduces the heroes’ new Thunder Spears into action, enabling players to fire projectiles at Titans for the first time in series history. Add to that the addition of rapid-fire Gatling guns, anti-personnel omni directional mobility gear, and other fantasy weapons, and the showdown between man and Titan has never been more intense. “The only thing we’re allowed to believe is that we won’t regret the choice we made.” — Hajime Isayama In addition, Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle includes an all-new Territory Recovery mode, where fans can put together their dream team of Titan killers in hopes of taking back their land, all the while researching and upgrading their weapons to deliver the ultimate impact. Playing through Territory Recover mode and Character Episode mode, fans can expect at least 30 hours of all-new explosive content at their fingertips, with over 70 hours of gameplay to achieve 100-percent completion. Add in addictive online modes with characters flying across the screen blasting each other with the new Gatling guns and Thunder Spears, and fans of the award-winning anime will have more variety in Titan gameplay than ever before. Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle will be available as an upgrade pack for fans who already own Attack on Titan 2 (enabling you to begin your battle in Season 3), or as a standalone game for those who are starting fresh, delivering all of the action of Seasons 1-3 in one package. “If you win, you live. If you lose, you die. If you don’t fight, you can’t win.” — Eren Yeager Attack on Titan fans who are enjoying the show’s latest season can continue the battle on PS4 on July 5. View the full article

Hi Gran Turismo fans! We’re excited to announce to you that the June’s update for GT Sport, Patch 1.40 will be available for everyone starting tomorrow, June 27, at 12AM PT (Internet connection required for update) adding five new cars, including the ultimate in racing machinery — the Gran Turismo Red Bull X2019 Competition. In addition, a new road course has been added to the Sardegna track. Also, if you missed any of the action from World Tour 2 at the Nürburgring last weekend you can catch up on all the action right here. New Vehicles In total, five new vehicles will be available: Chevrolet Camaro Z28 ’69 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro ‘19 Toyota Sports 800 ‘65 Renault Sport Clio V6 24V ‘00 Gran Turismo Red Bull X2019 Competition Featured Vehicle: Gran Turismo Red Bull X2019 Competition ‘The fastest racing car on earth, free from any and all regulation’: The fan car project of Red Bull Racing and Gran Turismo, has already produced two ultimate racing machines, the X2010 and X2014. But with the opening of the FIA Gran Turismo Championships, a need arose for a competition vehicle that both the driver and spectators could enjoy. This led to the birth of the X2019 Competition. The X2019 Competition is based on the X2014 Standard. On the exterior, the front wing and the rear end of the body was altered to reduce downforce, in order to suppress the drastic change in aerodynamics that would occur in close battles with another car. The front and rear wheel covers have also been changed to allow fast tire changes. In addition, the 2-liter turbo is replaced by a 3-litre naturally aspirated engine, and a more conventional throttle system has been introduced in order to give it a more attractive racing sound. New Track: Sardegna – Road Track A new road course has been added featuring the island of Sardegna, one of a number of Italian resorts surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Using closed off sections of public roads, this is a high-speed technical street course that features both long full-throttle straights and tight corners. In particular, the ups and downs of the latter half of the course and the diminishing road width allow for some real high stakes, up to the guard rail racing. GT League To support the release of the Red Bull X2019, an endurance series has been added in addition to seven new rounds across the other leagues. View the full article

After showing the game to thousands of players at various game shows, I am excited to finally see Medusa and Her Lover release on PS VR internationally. All the smiles and support that I have received from everyone who has seen the game has pushed me toward the release of this unique PS VR game, which focuses on co-op play. Since this game is rather unique, and throws the player deep into the world that Medusa and her lover find themselves in, I wanted to take the time to introduce how you can play in both single and co-op modes. I hope that you will all use this information to fully enjoy the game! Introducing Medusa and Her Lover Medusa is cursed — any living being that she makes eye contact with will be turned to stone. When facing various enemies, this curse turns into quite an advantage, as she can turn her opponents to stone with a single glance. However, great power comes at a cost; overusing her hardening stare can tire her out and place a great amount of strain on her body. Her only form of recovery is to close her eyes and take a moment to rest. Medusa doesn’t travel alone. Gaios is a young hero, determined to find a cure to Medusa’s curse. Gaios battles side-by-side with Medusa, covering her blind spots. He draws enemies away from her in moments when she needs to close her eyes to recover. Medusa and Gaios are tragic lovers — though they support each other through every step of their journey, it could all end in tragedy with a single glance. Medusa and Her Lover can either be played with two people in local co-op or as a single player in VR where each side of the controller takes control of a different character. The set up is rather unique, but can lead to hours of fun as you face the various stages of monsters. Local Co-Op Mode Medusa and Her Lover can be played with a partner in local co-op mode. One player assumes the role of Medusa, and wears the PS VR headset. The other player takes the role of Gaios, played via the TV screen. The game is relatively simple to operate, with no complicated game mechanics that might deter casual players. The key part of local player for Medusa and her Lover, is the chance to communicate and work together, without looking at each other — the same circumstances as our two main characters. While I was developing the title, I often heard comments such as “My relationship with my husband/wife improved though this game” — something a developer is always delighted to hear! Please note that two DualShock 4 controllers would be needed for co-op mode. Single Player Mode Single Player mode features a rather unique style of play as you take control of both Medusa and Gaios. Controlling two characters at once can be challenging at first, but doing it smoothly for the first time results in a huge sense of accomplishment. While wearing the VR Headset, both characters are controlled using a single controller, where the buttons and joystick on the left side controls Medusa, the buttons and joystick on the right controls Gaios. Since I was developing this game alone, I was exclusively playing in this mode. You can switch between the characters simply by moving them, viewing the scene from a third-person perspective. This can help you navigate the field, see your surroundings, and escape from enemies you didn’t notice behind you. Standing still after moving Medusa switches you to her first-person perspective. In this mode, you can directly look at your enemies and turn them to stone. Just be careful not to look at Gaios! Although Medusa’s ability is powerful (and cursed), she must time take to rest. It is during these moments where Gaios can shine. Using the two characters in tandem can create a defensive team with Medusa handling long range attacks, and Gaios focusing on close range. Since single player mode is much more challenging than co-op mode, I recommend you start on Easy difficulty. It can be rather difficult at the start, but you can begin slow and work your way bit by bit through all six stages of the game. This two-character set up can open up a variety of unique playstyles, so I look forward to hearing everyone’s best strategies for the game! View the full article

Hello! Today, we’re bringing the Twilight Garden — a free update and brand-new chapter of Moss — to the PS VR community. Having launched Moss nearly a year and a half ago, the Twilight Garden is an answer to every fan who can’t wait for more Moss. The Twilight Garden is an all-new adventure that runs alongside Quill’s incredible journey through the original storyline of Moss — a complementary experience to the main game. This new chapter introduces additional environments, challenges, and story for new and returning players to experience. So, really… what’s new? Well, first you’ll discover strange portals woven throughout the existing game. These magical gateways will transport you and Quill to the Twilight Garden, a place unlike any you’ve seen in Moss thus far. The strange and vibrant garden is adorned with Sprite artifacts, making it clear you’re somewhere special that is rarely (if ever…) visited by outsiders. Here you’ll reunite with the familiar toad character from your previous meeting with Rootseer Vada and the Sprites, and you’ll also encounter a mysterious presence that will prepare you for the dangers ahead. The toad may not trust you at first, but there’s a good chance he’ll turn around as you best the challenges and prove your worth. And as you get to know him, you’ll realize he is alive, and players will have fun feeding him dragonflies, initiating a staring contest, annoying him, and ultimately departing with a cool fist bump. And as a reward for overcoming the challenges within the garden, Quill will receive a new, magical gauntlet and armor set. With the new look, she’ll possess the ability to reveal hidden pathways, allowing her to traverse to areas otherwise unattainable. Along with the new armor set, the guiding presence within the garden will gift Quill a new sword, allowing her to modify her attack style, making it more directional and allowing for rapid, successive attacks. With the new sword, you’ll observe that Quill’s attacks are more fluid, a testament to her growing skill in combat. In fact, this new weapon handling skillset transfers to Quill’s base sword as well. Enjoy! Additionally, the sword offers more than a new directional attack style of combat, as you can empower Quill’s new sword with a magical energy charge which enables her to reach far away targets. We love this mechanic and can’t wait for you to try it out. But, if you want to continue outside of the Twilight Garden with Quill’s signature green gauntlet and sword, we’ve given you the ability to equip Quill with your preferred weapon and armor. Now, players who enjoy using our screenshot mode (right-thumbstick-press while in the game menu) will be able to snap a picture of Quill with their preferred look! We’re so thankful for you all and hope that with the release of the Twilight Garden, we’ve given you a reason to re-explore Quill’s world and renew your excitement for what is still yet to come. Thank you. View the full article

Prepare to once again embark on a perilous journey filled deadly asteroids, orbital boosts and the emptiness of space, but now featuring a polished experience, a brand new epilogue and a myriad of new challenge levels. Escape space pirates and more in Lost Orbit: Terminal Velocity! A Journey revisited Relive the original tale of Harrison’s journey through the stars with a fresh take on the story. We had an enormous reaction from fans of the tale of Harrison and his robot sidekick, so when we decided to create the definitive edition of the game we wanted to add new levels and enhance the original game. Terminal Velocity features a more cinematic retelling of the original story, bringing a new perspective on the trials and tribulations of our surly hero. We also improved the gameplay experience, polishing levels, timing and controls. This is by far the best way to play Lost Orbit. The story continues Lost Orbit: Terminal Velocity features a new epilogue to continue the story. After the events of Harrisons journey across the universe our hero is reunited with his sister only to find out that things are much worse than he thought possible. Space pirates roam the system salvaging whatever they can all the while Ferro Corp is rounding up refugees and forcing them into labor contracts. Harrison sets off on a mission of escaping the chaos that was once his home world in hopes of finding more survivors and a place to call his own. With the new story, we also added three new Trophies. More challenges Players boost, swim, bounce, leap, smash and teleport their way through a myriad of obstacles in a desolate yet beautiful galaxy as they struggle to find their way back to civilization. Armed with only an improvised set of equipment and a relentless spirit, astronauts will need to survive 65 intense levels across five systems, and confront not only their mortality, but also what lurks in the darkness. To aid in the travels, survivors must upgrade their abilities and employ fast-thinking skills to complete their interstellar journey alive. The original game had four systems and around 40 levels. Players wanted more and that’s exactly what we focused on. For story-driven fans we created a deep epilogue to continue the tale, with new friends, foes and insults. For the challenge-hungry players we crafted 15 extremely challenging levels to test to the most committed astronauts. New Mechanics The epilogue is our most dense system in terms of new mechanics. Players have the ability to smash into old depleted cores sending them flying into obstacles to clear a path. Next, players receive a new drill upgrade, allowing them to punch through asteroids smashing their way forward. The system is filled with space pirates, actively trying to gun down Harrison, setting up traps and laying down homing mines. The system is also filled with old space cables, allowing players to grind on rails to quickly traverse areas. We also added a few story-focused gameplay levels. Players must drill asteroids to clear a path for an out-of-control starship, make their way through an old pirate filled mine, and even face off against an enormous pirate ship. Lost Orbit: Terminal Velocity, the definitive version of the fast-paced, dodge ‘em up game from PixelNauts Games, is launching July 16 and will be a free upgrade for players who already own the original game! Samurai Shodown is just about to launch and players around the world are roaring to embrace death with their fellow peers. This sword-based fighting game is not for the weak at heart, for at any moment you can go from being on top of the world to six feet under in mere seconds. This new title in the Samurai Shodown series cuts its way into the FGC by adding three new, completely original characters to its roster. Fan favorites like Nakoruru and Galford take the stage as newcomers Darli Dagger, Yashamaru Kurama, and Wu Ruixiang come blazing in with playstyles unique to their character personalities. Additionally, SNK has announced who the four characters of the Season 1 DLC pack are! We kicked off E3 with the reveal of Rimururu, the cute but deadly little sister of franchise star Nakoruru. But the three other characters are true-to-form OG ones that will make any SamSho fan squeal with delight. In order of release they are: Rimururu I bet you’re looking for ice or cold puns. Come on. Even I know better than that. Cute and cold have never gone together so easily! Oh, but watch out; her zoning tactics will have you ripping your hair out. Loveable Rimururu is joined by her protector spirit, Konru, as she sets out on an adventure to prove she has what it takes to protect nature. Does she succeed or fail in her journey? Read the first letter of each sentence in this paragraph to find out! Basara Basara is back and ripping into action with his signature weapon, the Togabitogoroshi. If you thought ninja throwing stars were dangerous, wait till you see this monstrosity. Nobody wants to embrace death more than Basara, but he is one of the few examples where you can’t always get what you want. Kazuki Kazama When there’s an evil spirit bringing an imbalance to the natural order of things, who do you call? Kazuki Kazama, of course! Armed with the Suzaku, a blade which contains the trapped fire spirit, Enja, Kazuki sets out to bring peace to the land and vanquish evil! Wan-Fu Throughout the series, Wan-Fu has used many weapons to send his opponents to the afterlife. In this installment, he’s picked up his trusty stone pillar to turn people into manhole covers. Wan-Fu doesn’t just drop his weapon, he throws it–you decide who’s going to be on the receiving end. A message from (Samurai Shodown) Producer, Yasuyuki Oda “For the first season, we wanted to extend our roster with different playstyles which can keep all players on their feet. Even though they’re still in development, we feel that each character has a very unique playstyle which fans new and old are sure to love. We at SNK truly hope you enjoy the newest installment in the Samurai Shodown franchise.” Samurai Shodown hits PS4 today, and the DLC characters start rolling out this August. And don’t forget, the first Season Pass DLC is completely free if you purchase or preorder by June 30! View the full article

We’ve all had that moment. You stare across the room and see that familiar red box. It’s time to roll some bones, build some roads, hoard some sheep, and trade your way to victory on the island of Catan. Unfortunately, this often happens when getting an impromptu gaming session together with your crew would be impractical if not impossible. You could fire up the mobile game, but you’re craving something a little bit more present; a bit more immersive. Finally, you can scratch that itch any time, day or night, with the PlayStation VR version of Catan, starting tomorrow! Social Settling The absolute best part about Catan on PS VR is the sense of social presence you get when you jump into a game with friends or online opponents. Catan VR has a broad vocabulary of game experiences and the excitement of a great roll, the frustration of getting robbed, or the satisfaction of landing a big trade is really evident in the myriad micro-movements that you see other players exhibiting throughout the game. Our Discord-based Catan VR tournament group has evolved from a few players coordinating games to a full-blown community of friends and gamers. A big part of that cohesion is the feeling that once you jump into a game, you’re really there with the other players and PS VR really shines in this regard. Whether you’re talking about the game itself or just catching up with friends before a game, Catan VR on PS VR serves as a great virtual tabletop to bridge the gap. Catan Characters Come to Life While the social presence of Catan VR is amazing, sometimes you just want to game by yourself or practice different strategies. This is where our AI shines. We worked directly with Klaus Teuber and his team of incredible game designers to develop AI players that both provide challenging tactical opponents at every difficulty level, but also express the canonical personalities that have made other versions of Catan so compelling. For example, if you want to fine tune your strategy with a more relaxed opponent, Mary Anne is a friendly player who just wants to build roads and have a good time. On the other hand, Jin will provide an aggressive challenge that will help you hone your skills for higher end play. I for one have enjoyed way better play in meatspace with my usual Catan gaming group (aka my sister and her husband) which I totally credit to playing against the Catan VR AI in a controlled environment that really replicates what the live game feels like. We also think we’ve come up with a really fun way to represent these classic characters in VR. While the card face presentation might seem very stylized at first, once you’re halfway through your first game, you’ll be reading their “tells” as if they were in the same room as you and looking for similar behaviors in online opponents too. The Iconic Island Like You’ve Never Experienced It Before One of my favorite parts of playing Catan on PS VR is that moment where you put the headset on and the game fires up from black. The VR display is so clean and the audio is tuned so perfectly that you can’t help but get goosebumps when you see the island fade into view, with some really soothing ambient audio making it feel like you’re really sitting on a hilltop just a few miles from the coast. I’ve probably seen this startup sequence a thousand or more times and it still gets me excited every time. While the visuals of the island really are stunning, we’ve all spent a ton of hours in the headset on that island and quite a few of those hours were spent not playing, but just relaxing in the game lobby, either chatting with friends, poking around the room, or simply daydreaming. There’s something magical about the visuals of the island, the nostalgia of your favorite game setting coming to life, and the soundscape of the five elements of the game coming together. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t catch a nap or two in the headset in the name of “quality assurance” throughout production. With over 30 million copies sold, and a legacy that includes spawning the modern tactical board gaming movement, Catan is one of the most important games of all time. Combining that fantastic experience with the power of PS VR has led to some incredible results and we’re thrilled to share that experience with you tomorrow, June 25. See you on the island! Hey folks! The Sinking City — our Lovecraftian detective thriller — finally comes out tomorrow, and we are very excited to share it with you! In The Sinking City, we play as Charles Reed, a private eye who is slowly losing his sanity. The search for a cure brings him to the fictional city of Oakmont, where the game takes place. Reed’s mental state is something you will need to keep an eye on throughout your adventures. If it goes down, things will become… weird. Strange visions will plague the detective’s mind, he will start seeing phantoms, the city will turn to ash around him… It’s a nightmare. In this strange world, there are lots of things that can deplete your sanity. To give you a heads-up on what to expect in the game, I’d like to share five things you’ll want to avoid while exploring Oakmont. 1. Disturbing sights Even though Charles is a hardened Great War veteran and a private detective, seeing gore and massacre will still have an impact on his already damaged mental health. When you are two steps from complete madness, more violence will definitely not help, you know. Unfortunately, it’s literally his job to examine bodies and crime scenes. 2. Supernatural beings Oakmont is home to all kinds of supernatural beings. Monsters that came along with the mysterious flood, are now roaming the city’s streets, slaughtering everyone in their way. The locals have learned to avoid them, but this is not the case for Reed. His path to the terrible truth behind his visions will often put him against the terrifying creatures. And you know what, fighting these otherworldly entities will do as much damage to your sanity as their vicious attacks – to your health. 3. Choices In this deranged world of desolation and hopelessness, Charles will often have to make difficult choices. People you depend on, your life depends on, will ask you to commit appalling deeds, in return for their favors… That’s the price you will have to pay if you want to get to the bottom of what is making you lose your mind. And make no mistake, the consequences of your actions may and will haunt you. 4. Supernatural abilities Charles Reed is no stranger to the supernatural. In fact, he has certain supernatural abilities that arose from the same mysterious events that permanently damaged his mind. The detective learned to use these special skills in his investigations — they allow him to see things that no one else can. But everything has a price, and resorting to these supernatural powers will take a toll on your sanity. 5. Presence of something incomprehensible Monsters on the streets are not the only otherworldly beings, the ocean depths are dangerous as well. The dark and oppressive underwater environment will inevitably take a toll on the detective. However, there’s something far more momentous lurking among the sunken ships and waterlogged ruins. Something a man is not ready to face. Prepare to plunge into insanity tomorrow in The Sinking City and don’t forget: do not call up that which you cannot put down. View the full article

So, I’m a bit of a Destiny addict. As such, I decided a couple months ago that I was finally going to try to get one of the game’s most sought-after weapons: Luna’s Howl. This hand cannon has a spicy set of perks and an equally spicy questline you need to tackle to earn it. You’ll spend a lot of time in the game’s Competitive PvP playlist if you decide to chase this pinnacle weapon, and as you work toward it you’ll notice the titles of its steps have a certain familiarity to them: Shock and Denial Pain and Guilt Anger and Bargaining Depression and Loneliness The Upward Turn Reconstruction Acceptance The quest steps to obtain Luna’s Howl are a reflection of the stages of grief. At first, players might see these as a subtle nod to a player’s experience attempting to climb the competitive ranks to obtain the weapon — a process that can be a test of not only a player’s skill, but their patience. But looking at the flavor text associated with each step paints a different picture: Shock and Denial “We’ve all lost something. But right or wrong, there’s no changing the past. Hear the Crucible’s a good place for getting out some aggression.” —Banshee-44, to Josef Pain and Guilt “I used to see her watchin’ your matches on Shaxx’s feed. She’d bark every time you’d fire that thing. It was music to her ears.” —Amanda Holliday, to Josef Anger and Bargaining “Anger is not your enemy here. It is your partner. When the two of you work together, your foes will burn in glorious battle.” —Lord Shaxx, to Josef Depression and Loneliness “Sometimes Louis takes off for days at a time. He needs his space. But I think he wants me to get used to him not being there. Even you Guardians have to be OK with going on alone.” —Hawthorne, to Josef The Upward Turn “Glad to see you back on your feet, Hunter. The Crucible isn’t the same without you — and your Hand Cannon.” —Lord Shaxx, to Josef Reconstruction “Such ferocity and channeled rage. It’s magnificent! Her Light burning through you is nearly blinding.” —Lord Shaxx, to Josef Acceptance “We have all borne witness to your journey, Guardian. But I know you still have some things undone. Use this to finish what they started.” —Lord Shaxx, to Josef This one is mine. Once you finally complete the “Acceptance” step and claim your prize, reading the weapon’s accompanying lore entry puts Josef’s journey and its accompanying flavor text into heartbreaking perspective: Josef opened the door. Shaxx filled the hallway beyond. “You look like hell,” said the Crucible Handler. Josef scoffed. “Get out of here. I have Hive to hunt. No time for the Crucible today.” “Hive. You lost her on the Moon?” Josef said nothing. “You aren’t the only Guardian to leave loved ones behind on that rock.” Shaxx held out a long, lacquered box. “The Gunsmith asked me to deliver this personally.” “What’s Banshee thinking? I can’t afford this.” “I took care of it. Scavenged parts from my personal collection.” Josef considered it a moment. “It’s a good gun.” “She was a good dog. This isn’t a replacement. But it will help you finish your business with the Hive. Then I expect to see you back in the Crucible. We could use the inspiration.” :( This questline is a small example of the (dare I say it) underappreciated work that goes into the lore that serves as the backbone of Destiny’s universe. With Destiny 2: Shadowkeep bringing us back to the moon this September, my journey to unravel its secrets will be underscored by a more personal mission: delivering justice to the Hive on Josef’s behalf. Until that day comes, telling his story here will have to do. View the full article

Monster Hunter: World is treading into new territory in multiple ways with the upcoming release of the massive Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion. There is so much cool stuff in Iceborne — and we don’t just mean the new wintry Hoarfrost Reach ecosystem. So we wanted to give you a hands-on taste of what you can expect, along with this handy guide to prepare you for the new challenges. But first, a recap (and I’ll try to make it the fastest recap ever, so read at 2X speed for the intended effect) for those who haven’t hunted in a while, or at all: You are a hunter. Hunter of monsters. Monsters leave tracks. Your Scoutflies (green fireflies) guide you to tracks. You collect tracks and find the monster. Then you battle the monster alone or with friends: attack, get hit, observe its behavior, counter-attack, get hit again, use items, use tools, use the environment, maybe faint, and finally win. Through this Beta, you get bragging rights and item packs that unlock in the full Iceborne game when it releases. In the full version of the Iceborne expansion, you also get materials to craft new weapons and armor… to take on even more ferocious monsters! Phew! With that out of the way, let’s get to those new features: 1. Fight the cold temperatures Before you can track down and battle any monster in the Hoarfrost Reach, you have to survive the new locale’s freezing temperatures. Staying out in the cold without something to warm you up will slowly eat away at your stamina, hindering your ability to sprint and even perform some attacks. Lucky for you, the Hunter’s Guild has stocked the blue supply boxes in the campsites with Hot Drinks; make sure to take those. And if you’re all out of Hot Drinks, be on the lookout for Hot Peppers (to make more Hot Drinks) or natural Hot Springs out in the environment. Sit in one of those Hot Springs long enough to warm up and get a boost to health recovery! Highly recommended. How can you tell if you need to warm up? Simple: look for blue icons next to your stamina bar… or look at your hunter’s cold shivering animation. 2. Use the Slinger any time Have you ever missed the perfect opportunity to stop the monsters in its tracks with a timely Slinger shot because you were still sheathing your weapon? I have… (I totally didn’t faint, though… maybe). Anyways, back on topic: now you can actually use the Slinger any time, even with your weapon drawn. Some weapons will even let you integrate Slinger burst shots into your weapon’s combos! Speaking of weapons… 3. Try out new weapon moves The header pretty much covers it already, but let’s dive a little deeper. The Iceborne expansion builds on every aspect of Monster Hunter: World, and that includes updates to every weapon. I imagine the combat designers meeting up and taking a long, hard look at each of the 14 different weapon types and thinking “what would make this weapon even better?” I can’t verify that things actually went down like that, but you’ll get what I mean once you take each of them out for a spin. Some weapon types got new abilities while others got new branching combos; but all of them got some form of interaction with the Slinger and the all-new Clutch Claw mechanic, which can completely change the way you approach certain in-game situations. 4. Grapple onto monsters with the Clutch Claw Another way we’re expanding your toolkit for hunting monsters is with the addition of the Clutch Claw. This handy apparatus shoots out a grappling hook out of your Slinger and zips you right to the monster. And from there you can perform a variety of strategic (and rad) moves: Claw attacks while grappling on the monster’s head will have you force the monster to change directions, and steer them in a specific way. Flinch Shots will use up all your Slinger ammo (if you have any) and will send the monster reeling toward a wall, ledge, traps, etc. Weapon attacks while grappling on the monster will either soften up its hide for more damaging follow-up attacks, or draw out some powerful Slinger ammo from the monster that you can then use against it. Just be mindful of these two key factors when using your Clutch Claw: Stamina cost is very high for grappling onto monsters. Enraged monsters gain resistance to claw attacks and are more prone to sudden attacks, which will shake you off and damage you in the process. 5. Master it all in the new Training Room Alright, so we’ve covered new Slinger tech, new weapon features and the new Clutch Claw. Now all we need is a safe place to test it all out and practice before actual hunts… Enter the revamped Training Room! At first glance, this is gonna look a lot like the existing Training Room in Monster Hunter: World; but we’ve actually added a new feature that will make a world of difference: you can switch the standard barrels and tree trunk out for a full-sized wheeled monster dummy thing! This training dummy won’t attack you, but it will react to Clutch Claw attacks just like a monster would, so it’s a great way to practice and master the ins and outs of these new mechanics, as well as the new features or combos for your weapon of choice. 6. Save memories of your hunts with View Mode The New World introduced to us some of the most beautiful vistas and detailed environments of the Monster Hunter series. Now, due to popular demand, we’re adding a feature that lets you break away from standard camera angles and line up the perfect shot of yourself or the scenery with View Mode. One thing to note: View Mode is much like real life photography and does not pause the action… so if a monster shows up, it can very well decide that you’re its next meal and come straight for you. If you get hit by anything while View Mode is active, you’ll be bumped back to regular gameplay. 7. Enjoy a more fine-tuned difficulty scaling One of our goals with Monster Hunter is to provide a fun experience for as many people as possible, regardless of their experience level and group composition. So for this Beta we’re offering you a choice of three different quests. Plus, you’ll get to try out the dynamic difficulty setting that’s all new for the series. This adapts the difficulty whether you’re playing in one of three scenarios: solo, as a pair, or a group (3 to 4 players). Our quests this time are: “Great Devourer, Great Jagras” (Ancient Forest, Beginners) “The Big-horned Banbaro” (Hoarfrost Reach, Intermediate) “The Wild Tigrex” (Hoarfrost Reach, Advanced) 8. And more…? Yes! Okay, so I covered a lot of stuff here… but don’t worry, it’s not everything. Part of the joy of gaming is to discover new things on your own, by going off the beaten path and good old trial & error. So go out there and explore everything you can while the Beta is live! The first round of the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Beta will be live from 3am PDT on Friday, June 21 through 3am PDT on Monday, June 24 for PlayStation Plus members only, with a second round going live 3am PDT on Friday, June 28 through 3am PDT on Monday, July 1 — this one being open for all PS4 players. Preload options will be available a couple of days before each beta period begins. Stay warm, and happy hunting! View the full article

B.J. Blazkowicz is the FPS genre’s premiere lone-wolf hero. Unlike the grizzled Nazi-killing star, his twin daughter protégés appreciate the value of teamwork. Wolfenstein: Youngblood improves upon the iconic series’ silky gunplay with dynamic co-op action and dual protagonists who exhibit an infectious rapport. A recent hands-on session focuses heavily on Jessie (“Jes) and Zofia’s (“Soph”) backstory and an intense assault on a Nazi zeppelin. Flashbacks reveal how B.J. and Anya groomed their daughters to survive in a harsh world. Soph wails on a punching bag and screams as Anya pushes her past her limits. Soph learns to dial in a shot while hunting boar as B.J. explains how to hone her killer instincts. As with the past two Wolfenstein games, character interactions are refreshingly authentic with a healthy dose of absurdity (after her first Nazi kill, Soph cheers, abruptly pukes, then cheers some more). “Confronting a heavily-armored Nazi flamethrower trooper is more manageable when your partner can flank him and burst his gas tank.” The sisters’ quips and colorful dialogue add welcome color to Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s reliable gunplay. Stealth tactics or all-out firefights are still your two options for tackling the airship infiltration mission, but the twins’ power suits layer on more gameplay options from the get-go. Double jump together around vertical locales, cloak up for synced takedowns, and spend ability points to gain skills like dual-wielding or knife-throwing. An RPG-like leveling system adds a rewarding drip-feed of overarching progression to the experience. These new features, along with the new two-player co-op, elevate Wolfenstein’s gameplay to new heights. Confronting a heavily-armored Nazi flamethrower trooper is more manageable when your partner can flank him and burst his gas tank. The sting of falling in battle is smoothed over by having your partner nearby for a quick revive. A treacherous boss battle against a power suit-equipped general is more dynamic thanks to his aggro being split between both players. Every aspect of Wolfenstein’s challenging, top-tier gunplay benefits from having a friend along for the ride. A few more highlights and random observations from my time with the game: Enemies now have health bars above their head – useful info for strategizing with a friend against heavily-armored foes. Leveling up mid-firefight restores your health, a classic RPG rite that’s handy in a pinch. Melee is more powerful than ever. Your hatchet or knife is invaluable for close-quarters executions. A “ping” system allows players to quickly tag ammo, armor, and other pickups in the area so their partner can find them. Each player gets their own pickups (e.g. that piece of body armor in the corner can be grabbed by both players – no squabbling!) The twins each have colorful emotes they can direct at one another for helpful buffs (e.g. Jes raising devil horns boosts Soph’s armor). If a downed partner isn’t revived before a timer runs out, one of the players’ shared lives will be spent. Prepare to team up with your most trusted co-op buddy and find B.J. Blazkowicz when Wolfenstein: Youngblood launches on PS4 July 26. View the full article

I’m Ryan Vandendyck, game director for Citizens of Space and the creator of the Citizens franchise, and this is a window into a subtle, but crucially important, element of the design of the Citizens games — namely, the diversity among the titular Citizens. The seed of the Citizens franchise began a decade ago in 2009 with a simple idea — what if regular people, the ones typically NPCs in most games, were the heroes? This simple idea was provocative enough to make us eager to explore the possibilities and we set to work on what would become Citizens of Earth, the first game in the Citizens series. But we quickly encountered the question of what these regular people would look like? If indeed the cast was meant to represent the people of Earth in Citizens of Earth and the people across our galaxy in Citizens of Space, we realized the cast would have to be diverse enough to be believably representative. This realization, far from being a restriction on us (as in, “Oh we need to make x more people that look like so-and-so, and more people that look like such-and-such”), ignited a fire of creativity that let us stretch our imaginations about the possibilities about who could be a hero. And since the average ‘hero’ in a video game is often pretty recognizable as a heroic type (how cliché to have a heroic character look heroic!), we realized we had a great opportunity to do something very different with our Citizens. In Citizens of Earth, we not only had an equal number of male and female Citizens (which was a balance we wanted to achieve from the outset) but Citizens of all ages, body-shapes, and in a variety of life circumstances. Since the game’s theme and story revolved around regular people being the heroes, we wanted the regular people playing the game to see themselves in the heroes they were able to recruit and utilize. And of course, there was a basic practical and aesthetic consideration here too — with 40 recruitable Citizens in both Citizens of Earth and Citizens of Space, it’d be pretty boring if they all looked very similar! When transitioning from Citizens of Earth to Citizens of Space, we had a new challenge — we had to consider diversity for entirely new categories of beings, specifically robots and aliens. Now unlike Citizens of Earth, this was less to do with ensuring that everyone who plays the game can see themselves in the game’s heroes since we don’t expect many aliens or robots to play the game (but aren’t giving up hope of that happening!), but more about continuing the theme of diversity and bringing regular galactic folks into the spotlight as interstellar heroes. This broad diversity is a recurring theme within Citizens of Space, in that every Citizen you meet is unique in appearance and capabilities, both in battle and out. In battle, you can expect every Citizen to play a bit different, not only because of their battle abilities but also because of the new battle minigames that you can play to power up the abilities of the Citizens! And of course, since they’re regular people, every Citizen has a day job or, as we call it in the game, a Talent that you can use to expand your ability to interact with the world. If you like buying and utilizing items, level up the various store-based Citizens (like the Pizza Bot and Chef) to gain access to new and more powerful items. If you enjoy exploring the world, level up the Miner and Decorator to smash rocks and move aside blocks to access secret areas and reap the rewards of exploration. Or perhaps you appreciate more aesthetic touches — if so, level up the Composer to customize (permanently, if you so choose) the music that plays in various levels, the Meteorologist to play around with the game’s weather systems, or the Curator to take a look at behind-the-scenes concept art. And if you like advancing your mastery of game systems, consider leveling up your Assistant or the Ship to gain better control over battle frequency and fast travel respectively. Although the core of the Citizens franchise is a fun, comedic RPG adventure, I always like threading an underlying positive message into the games we make. And for the Citizens series that message is: just like how all of the ‘regular people’ in the game are unique and special heroes, so too is every ‘regular person’ in our world a unique and special hero and we’re thrilled to continue that message of diversity and intrinsic value of regular people in Citizens of Space. I can’t wait for you to meet and recruit the huge variety of Citizens when Citizens of Space launches tomorrow on PS4. Thanks, everyone! View the full article

Greetings, PS VR fans! I’m Graeme and I’m the Tech Director and All-Hat-Wearer at Owlchemy Labs. We’re excited for Vacation Simulator to make a splash on PlayStation VR tomorrow, and today I’m going to share a bit about some of the most intricate tech in the game — water! From the beginning, we knew water was going to be a big part of Vacation Simulator. Large bodies of water that the player can directly stand in are featured prominently in all three of our destinations, and each of these brought different challenges to the development team. Our technical deep dive starts on Vacation Beach. On a beach, having water that both looks and feels good is essential to the vacationing experience. We experimented with different ways of rendering water and learned a lot about how the feeling of water changes when you’re in VR. Common tricks for cartoon-style water and animation just felt… off in VR. A flat plane of water is uncomfortable to stand in and makes you feel like you’re standing through a solid object, but waves that animate too intensely can also make you feel motion sickness. We had to strike the right balance of transparency, wave displacement, and textured layers of foam to create an ocean that both fits with our colorful art style while still being comfortable to stand — and splash! — in. Of course, having visually appealing water is great, but if it doesn’t react properly to your hands or other objects in the world, the illusion is immediately broken. At Owlchemy Labs we’re all about physics interactions, so we put together a system that makes items bob around and provides satisfying splash and ripple effects. All of this happens dynamically with all of the objects in the game, including ridiculous player-created objects like giant waffles or custom shrubs. Our system automatically figures out the best way to make things float based on their shape, volume, and other factors, blending realistic physics with those only possible in VR for the most fun. In Vacation Forest, water takes the form of a swiftly flowing river. The river is powered by the same buoyancy system that makes the beach work, but with a new twist: While the ocean focuses on gentle waves, rivers need to flow! The forest’s river has lots of turns, rocks for water to flow around, and even a small waterfall. We needed a way for water to flow around all these elements and translate that into water physics motion for not just items floating down the river, but the fish who live there as well! To do this, we created a map to show how the water should flow — in technical terms, a flow map. Lastly, the frosty climate of Vacation Mountain may not seem like the most obvious place for a body of water, but we didn’t want mountain vacationers to miss out on any of the fun! The lodge’s hot tub combines buoyancy with another one of our more complicated systems — temperature. It can be set to cold or hot, freezing items solid, heating them, and even cooking them! Of course, what’s a hot tub without jets? The flow feature we developed for the Forest’s river made it easy to get swirly in the hot tub as well. Large bodies of water are certainly complicated, from rendering to physics to the way they interact with all of our other systems, but we knew the world of Vacation Simulator wouldn’t be complete without them. Wherever you choose to vacation, we hope you enjoy splashing around and playing with all your favorite items in the water — and remember to stay hydrated! Bot Voyage, – Graeme @ Owlchemy Labs Vacation Simulator is available tomorrow, June 18, for PlayStation VR. View the full article

Mini-Mech Mayhem is out tomorrow and behind the bright and colorful aesthetic is a deceptively deep and highly-strategic experience. Whether you’re battling others online or tackling the AI in single player, you’ll need a playbook to guide your mech to victory. While there’s a robust tutorial, which includes 30 hand-crafted challenges to explore some more nuanced maneuvers, we at FuturLab would like to share some of our own strategies to help you towards total tabletop domination! Basic Training There are two phases to a match of Mini-Mech Mayhem: planning and action. In the planning phase, you must plan three actions — two moves and a shot, or two shots and a move. You won’t know what other players are going to do, so you need to predict your opponent’s behavior while remaining unpredictable yourself. In the action phase, you watch as moves are played out one after another. It’s here that you can use special intercept cards to change the course of a match. Intercepts cost power which is awarded at the start of each round, can be collected from the board or stolen from another player. There are 25 intercepts in total, so be sure to check out the intercept guide on the in-game settings menu for full details of what they all do. The aim of the game is to win yourself some Victory Points and it takes three to win a match. Victory Points are awarded for directly causing the destruction of an opponent with a projectile or push, or by ending a round on the victory square. So let’s take a look at some of our favorite, fiendishly fun ways to make that happen… The Vulture Don’t be afraid to fight dirty — your opponents almost certainly will! Try letting them do all the hard work to capture a victory square, then play a shuffle or rotate position intercept to end the turn in their spot and take it for yourself. The Cheap Shot Directly cause an opposing mech to fall into a hazard and you’ll score yourself a victory point. Headshots are a great way to do this so keep an eye on the victory square; if there’s an adjacent hazard, line yourself up with it and wait for an opponent to take the bait, then BAM! A headshot will knock them back and down they go. Like A Record, Baby You won’t get a victory point for a leg shot which diverts a mech into a hazard, but such an action might keep your plans on course and allow you to win one another way. If you think a mech will be heading for a square you’re on and you don’t want to get shoved out the way, hit ‘em in the leg to keep them off your back. Wherever your opponent is going, a leg shot is a great way to make sure they don’t get there. The Triple Play Sometimes it’s worth biding your time. Opponents with a victory point or two will make themselves a target of other players’ interceptions, leaving the quiet ones to line themselves up for a sudden strike to seal victory… In the example above, a victory point for each of the two mechs in the hole and finishing up on the victory square is enough to secure victory in a single action! Mini Mechs, Massive Mayhem Even the best laid plans of mechs and avatars can fall victim to some unpredictable intrusion. Whether it’s a freak wind knocking out the Spanish Armada or a cat jumping on the board in the middle of a chess match, forces beyond our control can often determine the course of battle, just like some intercepts here. Whether things end up in your favor or not, it’s best to just enjoy the chaos, hope the pieces fall in your favor and regroup to fight another day. Cool Metal Jacket Between bouts and away from the mechanized madness of the battlefield, there are tons of cosmetic items, dances and weapons available for personalizing your avatar and mech. We’ll be releasing more items in the coming weeks and months, giving you shiny new things to grab as you move through the levels to find and unlock that perfect outfit. Looking good might not help you win, but it can always make you feel better about losing! View the full article

One of my standout E3 demos this year was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a “reimagining” of the seminal 2007 shooter classic, also developed by Infinity Ward. Studio Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki introduced a new sequence set early in the game. The mission: intercept a group suspected of participating in a devastating terrorist attack in London. Afterwards, I got a chance to speak with Taylor. “From day one, we knew the kind of game we wanted to make, the kind of story we wanted to tell. We looked at the words Modern Warfare. What does that mean today? What would that look like?” The sequence I saw was a nailbiter, a slow, stealthy infiltration set a multi-story townhouse in northern London. Equipped with night vision goggles, the squad crept through the cramped stairwells, quietly ambushing the occupants while they ate and talked. Then, all hell broke loose. “The demo you saw today doesn’t delve deeply into the characters,” Kurosaki said. “The main character wants to make a difference. He wants to do more, and feels like he can’t. As soon as he says those words, Captain Price says, ‘you’re with me.'” “If you [want to take the gloves off, and be effective],” Kurosaki continued, “…be careful what you wish for.” If Infinity Ward is aiming to create a grounded narrative that captures the ambiguity of war, they’re on the right path. The demo was by turns suspenseful and exhilarating. Kurosaki explained that Infinity Ward doesn’t plan to pull any punches. “It should make you think. This is a very sensitive subject. This is not a pro-war game… It’s a critique. And it exposes how deadly serious this stuff is. We’re not beholden to anybody, and nothing is off limits. We critique the superpowers, we critique how they fight in these regions of conflict.” Kurosaki explained that the inspiration for this reimagined Modern Warfare came from meticulous research with a host of consultants, from veterans of the SAS, CIA, and Navy Seals. “We do our research because we want to get this right,” Kurosaki said. “We realize how important it is to treat this subject with reverence and respect.” “Some of our consultants say, ‘we had imperfect intel. We were fighting in an area that was blurry, that wasn’t black or white. And yet we are expected to be perfect. That is the burden that we carry. And we know we have to be perfect.'” “It’s not lip service,” Kurosaki continued. “It’s straight from the horse’s mouth.” “But it’s not relentless, either. There are moments of levity and camaraderie… It has heart, it has characters that you care about, and root for. It puts you into the shoes of these fighters.” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes to PS4 on October 25. View the full article
