Guest NEO-X Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 OMNI ]nice photo shop job on that..... or just simply freakin amazing!!!!!!! yeah, if its fake, its one of those things you want to BELIEVE is real Quote
[RIP]saint52 Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 It actually IS NOT fake......I believe there is the pilots interview somewhere on the web. Quote
Squid Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Not fake. We also train to be able to do "one wheel" landings where we hover with one of our landing gear on a rock or cliff or something in order to do insertions or extractions when there's no suitable landing area. Quote
DK_MaluNYMets Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Thats some great stuff right there. Good find irsh. Quote
Rage75 Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 OMNI ]nice photo shop job on that..... I'm goin more photoshop than real. Why wouldn't they just drop a bucket to get the guys ? Just seems like way too much more risk involved to try that. Quote
MaCoo Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Option A: Drop the ass end down on the building top grab the troops and hostages and haul ass versus. Option B: Hover over the tree line drop a basket which takes about 30-40 secs to deploy then bring it back up, then drop it again etc. Option A: 1 minute tops Option B: 6+ minutes You tell me which one you would take if you were being extracted out of an hostile area? Besides that is a Chinook helicopter what do you think this is the Coast Guard? Quote
[RIP]saint52 Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 LOL once again, its not fake.....and to extract, your not going to lower a bucket to retrieve multiple personnel from a hot zone. They extracted the same way in Vietnam......and these pilots are amazing. Look up the Nightsalkers(not the clan) The Nightstalkers were formed after a failed Delta force operation. Pilots with very little combat skill slammed into a c-130 before takeing off for a mission. After that Delta requested the best of the best be utlized. The Nighstalkers were formed. They are the best pilots and will fly in any weather condition and or battle condition. Rage75 ] OMNI ]nice photo shop job on that..... I'm goin more photoshop than real. Why wouldn't they just drop a bucket to get the guys ? Just seems like way too much more risk involved to try that. Quote
WARPIG Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Yeah, I'm going with real... I studied that picture closely and am a photoshop addict. I see nothing faked. They are just baddass pilots! Check this one out! Quote
Pathogen- Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 i could do that while eating a burrito. Quote

Just seems like way too much more risk involved to try that. Okay Rage, I'll give you my expert analysis. Pretty much the only people who carry the "buckets" you're thinking of are the Coast Guard and maybe some mountain rescue pilots. The military (speaking mainly for the Navy and Marine Corps) doesn't really carry anything like that. We have what's called a SPIE rig which is a long rope with several D rings on it and spec ops guys can hook up to it and we can carry them. It looks like this: The problem with the SPIE rig is: 1.) everyone attached to it has to have a harness 2.) it's slow 3.) your airspeed is limited 4.) all those guys are exposed to fire 5.) if that helo has an engine failure, guess who's getting dropped! The people being rescued, from what I recall of that pic, are civilians, so we're not going to use a SPIE rig to extract them. Not to mention that a SPIE rig is another piece of equipment that we don't normally fly with. Other ways we have of extracting people are the rescue hoist (very slow) and the jacob's ladder (very difficult). Another problem is that those guys are in the mountains. Mountain flying presents some very unique challenges because there are unusual winds that you have to deal with and you're at high altitudes. The higher you are, the less power available your engines have. It takes more power to hover than to fly in most cases, so you don't want to be trying to hold a hover for too long in a mountainous environment. That manuever uses less power, but requires greater effort to hold the aircraft steady and considering the other options, is safer for all involved. Quote
Guest OMNI Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 One question...how the hell did the guy who took the picture get out of there? Quote
MaCoo Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 I give up Omni but would a frog bump it's ass if it had wings? Mostly likely: It could have been a supporting helicopter or even a squad of troops. Combat photo guys get there shots any way they can. The soliders/Marines outside may just be the escort and crew of the chopper. Quote
[RIP]saint52 Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 lol always somethin........like Mac said could be anything Quote
Guest Corruptor310 Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 1. there is a seam in the picture -- this seam goes from the bottom trailing edge of the tail rotor area to the buttocks area of the civi getting in. 2 there is a seam that runs undereneath the copter -- this seam may be caused by the electrical field that is generated by large copters, but it does not explain the issue in 1. 3. fire pit possibly with fire -- no embers being blown around, possible embers underneath the porch area --- some strange lights under there for sure....... 4. the log --- i dont know if this log would stay in the position underneath the down wash -- it is usually pretty strong. 5. no U.S. Military markings on this copter 6. no dust kick up anywhere in pic 7. the box by the fire pit -- looks like seat............ must be one good size piece of wood stay right there by the fire. Quote
MaCoo Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 How do you explain the terrain coming through the rotors spinning, and in rough terrain like that having wash outs and trails is not uncommon to look like that. Quote
