Need some computer HELP!!!

So I'm pretty sure I have some spyware, or some other form of malware on my computer but I can't find the bastard. Spybot, AVG free, McCafee, nothing is catching it and I've gone through my computer like top to bottom to try and find this damn thing. What makes me think I have it is that every time I go to a search engine in firefox utilizing the search box in the uper right hand corner, the entire first page of let's say google or yahoo will be nothing but links to advertising websites or websites that are malicious and it's pissing me off because the description of the links on that first page are the links I need to get to, but it redirects the links to these damn advertising/malicious websites. So if anybody can help or point me in the right direction to fix the problem it would be much appreciated!

Did you clear out cache, cookies and ALL files from internet temp directory?

 

IF you cannot clear this back up all your data, format and reinstall. There are times where you just need to say F it!

Also make sure your virus scanners are running their latest Dat file and scan engine.

 

You can also try to use "System Restore" in Windows

Already did this and I'm going to try and run that ad-aware free version, see what it gets me. If that doesn't work, I'll have to reinstall or do the dreaded system restore :'(

Also hit your CTRL ALT DELETE and see if there are any weird processes running. I have tracked shit that way as well.

yeah, that's a good method. i have a program that's basically task manager on 'roids, if there's a way to send it to you, LMK.

So I added that Ad-Aware and ran it and it found the bastard. It says it's a Redirected hostfile entry, but it won't or can't remove it when I tell it to remove the infection. Anybody have any suggestions to help?

Try re-running the scan with Windows in safe mode. Press F8 as the computer is booting up.

 

It's probably using the file and process that its trying to delete. This way whatever it is thats running won't be running in safe mode and should clear the files.

So this problem hasn't gone away and my computer wasn't able to rid itself of the files even after trying to perform the cleaning in safe mode. If I do a system restore what will that do? Should I save anything before doing it on an external drive? What do I need to do? Thanks again for help in advance

it is smit fraud fix. it should help you with your problem. also find ccleaner and run that.

I went to install the smitfraudfix and AVG recognized it as malicious and thus deleted all of the files for the program before it could even finish downloading. Is it supposed to be recognized as something that is malicious? Also the link you gave me Banshee isn't a direct link, it's goes to afterdawn.com but not directly to the download. Could this be the reason there's a problem?
