  4. Dear Gran Turismo Community, Thank you for your continued support and feedback on Gran Turismo 7, your voices have not gone unheard. I would like to apologize for the frustration and confusion caused last week with our patch updates which resulted in, not only a server outage but also adjustments to the in-game economy which were made without a clear explanation to our community. We know that this is not the Gran Turismo experience you expect and we will be making a goodwill gesture in the form of a non-paid credit pack of 1 million Cr. available to those players who may have been affected *. You will see this hit your accounts shortly. Make sure you log into the game before April 25 to claim the credits. The patch update previously deployed was intended to rectify an issue with inconsistent reward payouts within a part of the World Circuit Events. But, to re-establish the intended equilibrium and provide more accurate rewards based on time investment and completion, it was necessary to recalculate the rewards system as a whole. To improve the player experience, we will be rolling out a considerable patch in the beginning of April. The number of events will be increased, and we will reestablish the reward system with greater balance throughout the game to benefit all players. Updates which will come into effect beginning of April: Increase rewards in the events in the latter half of the World Circuits by approximately 100% on average. Addition of high rewards for clearing the Circuit Experience in all Gold/All Bronze results. Increase of rewards in Online Races. Include a total of eight new one-hour Endurance Race events to Missions. These will also have higher reward settings. Increase the upper limit of non-paid credits in player wallets from 20M Cr. to 100M Cr. Increase the quantity of Used and Legend cars on offer at any given time. Beyond this there will be a few additional patches deployed between now and the end of April which will add new cars and tracks and make some other fixes. Finally, we also want to take the opportunity to lay out some of the near-term updates we are working on. We can’t confirm an exact date or specifics yet, but will give advance notice via www.gran-turismo.com. Increase the payout value of limited time rewards as we develop as a live service. Further World Circuit event additions. Addition of Endurance Races to Missions including 24-hour races. Addition of Online Time Trials and awarding of rewards according to the player’s difference with the top ranked time. Make it so cars can be sold. We want to thank you for your continued patience and valuable feedback as we grow and evolve GT7 to make it as enjoyable and rewarding for as many players as possible. We always want to keep communication lines open with our community so that we can work together to build the best racing experience possible. *Limit 1 per person. Must own a digital or physical copy of GT7 for PS4 or PS5 prior to the publication of this post (Friday, 25 March at 1:00am PST) and log into Gran Turismo 7 between Friday, March 25 at 5:00pm JST/8:00am GMT/ 1:00am PDT and Monday, April 25 at 5:00pm JST/8:00am GMT/ 1:00am PDT to receive the free credit pack. 5. Hello, Fighters around the world! With Capcom Pro Tour concluding another epic season just last month, we continue our tradition of opening the season by taking a fresh pass at Street Fighter V’s battle balance, further fine-tuning each character in the roster… But wait, there’s more! We’re also releasing a couple of extra fun features, including visual filters and the jazzy Cap-Jams remixes for the Season 5 fighters — all coming to Street Fighter V for free on March 29. Battle Balance This will be our first Battle Balance since the arrival of Season 5’s characters—Dan, Rose, Akira, Oro, and Luke—so we’re excited to tinker with the entire cast in this new context and, ultimately, see what you will make of it all. We feel the S5 crew is in a pretty good spot, but don’t worry—they’re also getting some tweaks. Here’s a quick preview of the diligent Akira and the colossal Abigail. In general, our Battle Balance updates bring lots of little adjustments to each characters’ move sets and properties (some attacks become faster, while others do more damage or gain new special attributes). However, sometimes we got a little extra inspiration and added a few surprises too! So this coming Tuesday, you’ll have plenty to play around with and discover in the training room or, if you’re feeling adventurous, in online matches! Good luck! Play Video Visual Filters Going beyond our traditional Battle Balance updates, we’re adding two fancy new visual filters for everyone to enjoy. The Cel-Shaded Filter adds a stylish anime-esque look to the fighters and their animations—perfect for those flashy Critical Arts K.O. finishes —while the Pixel Filter mimics the old-school vibes from Street Fighter’s arcade roots. Note: to keep things as fair as possible in online matches, we’re restricting these filters to offline game modes only. Cap-Jams If you’ve been following each of Season 5’s character releases, you’ll already know our sound team band Cap-Jams has been putting out killer remixes of each character’s battle theme. If you didn’t know… well, now you do! These remixes are always awesome and a fun take on the original versions. Up until now, you could only listen to them on the Street Fighter YouTube channel, but starting with this update, you’ll be able to set them as background battle tracks in-game! May the Cap-Jams groves guide you to victory. Capcom Pro Tour Cosmetics Looking ahead, we have Capcom Pro Tour 2022 coming up this year. To celebrate the start of a new competitive season, we’re adding new DLC to the mix, including a special new color for all characters and a brand new stage Ring of Arcade packed with Easter Eggs referencing Capcom’s legacy. See if you can spot them all. Play Video With this Battle Balance update coming up and a new Capcom Pro Tour season starting soon, we’re eager to see just how spicy the competitive spirit will get.Again, this Street Fighter V Battle Balance update is coming March 29 and is free for all SFV players. And if you’re looking for more Capcom fighting games, keep an eye out for Capcom Fighting Collection coming June 24. View the full article
  6. Tunche is an action rogue-lite game inspired by classic beat ‘em ups such as Final Fight and Streets of Rage with a bit of modern hack ‘n slash and RPG elements. All of that wrapped up in a beautifully animated hand-drawn world with a story set in the heart of the Amazon jungle. You will be able to choose one of the five unique characters, including Hat Kid from the highly-acclaimed A Hat in Time! Before talking more about the game itself, aren’t you wondering: What does Tunche mean? Tunche is the name of a mythological creature, a being from folk tales told by many generations of peoples that live around the jungle and in many other places of South America. It is said that Tunche is a spirit that dwells deep in the heart of the rainforest and that when you get too close to it you’ll be able to hear it whistling. However, if you do, then it might already be too late for you. In our story, things are a bit different. Tunche is still a fearsome magical being, but he is also the spirit lord of the jungle. One day, all of a sudden, the jungle is overrun by evil magical creatures. These aggressive monsters are attacking villages, kidnapping people. Tunche is considered by locals to be their master, and so everything points to him as the mastermind behind it all. This is when four explorers, and a certain visitor from another world, each with a personal motive, decide to go into the wilds and find the beast. They will have to face many challenges, some of them born from other folk tales of Amazonian myths, and survive through four different worlds full of danger before they find out what the truth really is. The studio Leap Game Studios was founded in 2012 and is based in Lima, Peru. Tunche is a very special game for us at LGS. Although this is not our first title, nor our first console launch, it is a very important project for all members of the team. The game From the very beginning you will be able to use a simple melee three-hit with the use of the Square button. Each character has different attack speed and reach, so each is unique and everybody will find a playstyle to their liking. The more you fight the more your mana bar fills, and with that you get access to special attacks and Ultimate abilities. Characters specialize in different things: Rumi likes long-ranged magic attacks, while Qaru is good at aerial combos. Hat Kid is an all-rounder with some special moves that come right from A Hat in Time. Mix different abilities, master Launchers, Air Combos, Power Attacks and Super Magic Attacks to defeat your foes. While you fight, you will also see your “Stylish Meter” grow in power and go from a basic “D” to a Super Stylish “SSS”. The better the grade at the end of a battle, the better the rewards you will receive. Rewards are a very important part of your progression. You see, Tunche is also a rogue-lite game designed to be finished in one sitting. Even though characters retain their experience points and become stronger with each journey into the jungle, there are also temporary rewards that can give you a very strong advantage in a single session. The most important reward comes in the form of Spirit Cores, magical orbs that grant you extra abilities such as setting enemies on fire or calling down lighting from the sky. Even though you always lose your equipped Spirit Cores every time you Game Over, you can still level them up and buy them in stores if you have enough currency from your runs. The difference between our five protagonists doesn’t end with their gameplay mechanics and playstyle. Each character has their own story to tell, and it is told via in-game comics. They have their own goals and ambitions when they venture into the jungle and you will have to complete the story with each of them if you want to know everything about the world of Tunche and the character’s personal stories. The art style You might have noticed from screenshots and trailers, that Tunche has a very distinct art-style. Every single sprite in Tunche has been drawn frame by frame by our talented artists, and even though our levels have a 3D base, allowing you and your enemies to move around a space with real depth, everything has been illustrated to give the impression of a 2D art piece. With all that said, we truly hope all PlayStation players enjoy Tunche once it arrives on March 25. We have put a lot of work and effort into bringing you the best roguelike, beat ‘em up action experience we could and took a ton of inspiration from some of the most interesting pieces of Amazonian folklore to create ‘Tunche’. 8. Our next PS5 and PS4 system software updates are rolling out globally today, so we wanted to provide a quick look at some of the new features. We’re also glad to share new details on Variable Refresh Rate for PS5 on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, which is planned to release in the months ahead. New features for PS5 and PS4 Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones. PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test drive a Voice Command (Preview) feature that lets them find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice (English language setting only). PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test drive a Voice Command (Preview) feature that lets them find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice (English language setting only). You can read more about these system update features here. For a refresher on PS5 features like how to apply game presets on your console, pin videos and apps to your screen while you play, or share your screen with friends, check out the new “Pro Tips” cards in the Control Center. PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements Starting later today, we’re gradually rolling out the ability for PS App users to create or join Open and Closed Parties through the app as well. We’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features, delivering a consistent player experience with PS5. PS Remote Play mobile app users can enjoy a new “dark mode” based on their phone setting and choose from new Screen Reader languages for both iOS and Android, including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai and Chinese (traditional and simplified). On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5 We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch. As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off. Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch. Our teams will continue to work hard on ways to enhance your gaming and social experiences on PlayStation, so stay tuned for more updates! View the full article
  9. When we talked about adding online co-op to Returnal at Housemarque, the biggest question we had was: how can we support co-op play in an experience that’s intentionally surreal, isolating, and finely-balanced to challenge a single player’s ability to survive? The Chronosis It starts just with setting the mood: how do we get another player into Returnal? Well, through Chronosis of course. Players with a PlayStation Plus subscription interact with a Chronosis and, suddenly, another ASTRA Scout enters their cycle, staring down and analyzing Selene as she emerges. It feels very surreal and uncomfortable — which makes it absolutely perfect for Returnal. Beyond that, we really built the multiplayer experience around the idea that players can get help to progress through the game. A hosting player invites another player to join their session to help them overcome their current challenge. The host keeps this progress, whereas the joining player increases their Scout Rank, Weapon Traits, and Databank. At first, we had Chronosis in multiple places in each of our biomes, but we ultimately realized it was unintentionally resulting in players just engaging in Co-Op before major boss battles. Now, Chronosis are at the beginning of each Biome, so players are encouraged to explore and see how the game plays and evolves with a partner and how divvying up resource scarcity is immediately a new dynamic. Keeping the edge Of course, we wanted to preserve the challenge, drama, and intensity that Returnal is known for so some of our new co-op mechanics went through a lot of iteration to ensure those crucial elements of the game were maintained. Our most brutal example was our initial approach to handling a “downed” player; so long as one player is standing, a downed player can be revived and brought back into the fray. Reviving a downed player initially required the living player to sacrifice some of their health to revive their teammate. Turns out: this was mean. Five minutes into a new cycle, both players would be down to bare minimum health and stuck in a vicious cycle of one-hit kills. While playtesting one day, we realized that, really, reviving a downed player already had required a very valuable resource: time. Reviving your teammate mid-combat, especially against an Elite or a Boss where every millisecond matters, is all it really takes to maintain difficulty while ensuring both players can stay active in the game at once. Another element of the game that we changed for the co-op experience are the House and Ship sections that are experienced from Selene’s first-person perspective. We ended up removing these sections while playing Multiplayer so we could keep the speed and intensity of the multiplayer sessions high throughout the experience. Finally, Returnal has also been rebalanced specifically for co-op play so Atropos remains the perilous planet brimming with deadly monsters that we all know and love — just now with some room for a friend. The joys of networking Integrating multiplayer logic into Returnal was not the simplest endeavor and is, largely, a significant technical engineering challenge and as we prepared for ship we certainly encountered more than a few “issues” along the way. Such as a Titanops that became quite attached to its prey and the occasional “Other” Scout that’s been through one too many cycles. Beyond just the technical complications, we also talked and worked through a host of Design and UI/UX considerations to integrate another player into a host’s world as smoothly as possible. One of the first accessibility issues we ran into was simply being able to see the other player in a scene filled with fast-moving enemies and bullets everywhere. We didn’t want to go too over-the-top with this solution, so we integrated a subtle ASTRA-Green outline shader whenever your teammate moved beyond a certain distance. We also created a slick suit variation to complement the visual differentiation between Selene and the “Other” Scout. We also iterated on our core HUD for co-op by providing additional information for tracking where your teammate is, how far they’re getting from you, and, most significantly, the “Scout Rank” mechanic to reward players who join other games to assist their fellow ASTRA Scouts. This rank is prominently displayed for both players in a session and provides additional Ether for the visiting player on every rank-up. Conclusion Thanks to everyone involved in Returnal: Ascension and special thanks to our co-development studio Climax Studios. Now that Returnal supports co-op, we’re really excited to see players getting back into the game and call in some additional support to get past potential tough spots in the game; being able to fight through some of Returnal’s boss sequences with a partner has already been exhilarating during our internal playtests. Which is to say: “Bring it, Nemesis. We’ll get you now.” Returnal soundtrack vinyl We’re also thrilled to announce that the acclaimed score to Returnal by Bobby Krlic will finally be releasing on vinyl with custom art, available to pre-order now from here. 10. Ghostwire: Tokyo is almost here! If you pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition of the game digitally, you’ll be able to jump in starting today, March 22 to enjoy Tokyo’s haunted streets early before the game officially launches on March 25. But before you dive into Ghostwire: Tokyo, we’ve got some quick words of advice to help kickstart your journey. From tips on exploration to some pointers on combat, we hope this guide helps you become a ghost hunter in no time. Go vertical With its eye-catching blend of traditional architecture and modern skylines, Ghostwire’s version of Tokyo begs you to take to the rooftops for some off-the-ground exploration. Get some air from grappling Tengus and utilizing your ethereal gliding ability to reach areas quickly, discover hidden secrets and even get a vantage point on some unsuspecting foes. Reigning cats and dogs While Tokyo’s mass disappearance whisked away most of the city’s population, there are still a few survivors left, including some of the area’s animal residents. Using your abilities, you can read the thoughts of cats and dogs you come across, and some even have missions for you to accept. Stock up on pet food and you can even give out treats! After all, who could say no to a face like that? Speaking of animals, keep an ear out for a Nekomata’s meow, which alerts you to nearby hidden collectibles. They can give you Meika to spend on useful consumables at shops, as well as lead you towards secrets in the world. Absorbing spirits Tokyo’s vanishing has left several lingering spirits trapped throughout the city. Using katashiro paper dolls, you can absorb these spirits and keep them away from Hannya and his Visitors’ nefarious plans. After absorbing enough spirits, report to any nearby phonebooth to send them to safety, netting you bonus Meika and XP that you can use to level up your skills. Throughout the game, you’ll also come across additional katashiro dolls, allowing you to absorb even more spirits before having to deposit them in a phone booth. Go off the beaten path The streets of Ghostwire: Tokyo are rich, varied and detailed, with tons to do and soak in outside the main story. Give into temptation and explore the city for collectibles, side missions and yokai activities in the world. Not only do side missions let you dive deeper into the game’s world, they’re also a good source of spirits to collect (as well as magatama, a rare resource used to unlock more advanced areas of your skill tree). Strategize Visitors often attack in groups and can overwhelm you if you get surrounded. Try maneuvering around enemies and strategically positioning yourself to keep them under control – or line them up for a well-placed explosive fire shot or wide-area water blast using your Ethereal Weaving to clear out multiple foes at once! Accessorize Throughout the game – particularly after cleansing certain shrines – you’ll find equippable beads that provide a boost to some of your abilities, from reducing damage taken to increasing the power of your Ethereal Weaving. As you progress, you’ll also be able to equip more beads at one time, so try out different combinations. Put up your dukes Blocking is extremely useful for reducing damage from enemy blows and rewards players who can time their blocks perfectly. Not only do perfect blocks totally negate damage from enemy attacks, they can also stagger certain enemies or reflect certain projectiles back at them. Mix it up Ethereal Weaving isn’t your only option at your disposal in a fight. Use talismans to stun enemies in an area of effect, summon a spirit bush that you can duck behind for cover or even pick off enemies from afar with your bow. Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade Ghostwire: Tokyo has three sets of skill trees that can help you find your playstyle and grow as the ultimate ghost hunter. Are you into stealth? Focus on bow upgrades like faster draw time or faster movement speed while crouched. Enjoy getting up close and personal? Unlock abilities like melee range core grabs or core grabs on knocked-down foes to finish off foe with stunning efficiency. There are also some very useful skill unlocks every playstyle will benefit from, like decreased charge time for Ethereal Weaving or the ability to summon your own Tengu to grapple atop rooftops with ease. Growing ghost hunters need to eat Taking along some food on your adventure isn’t just nutritious – it’s your main way of restoring health in a battle. Keep an eye out for snacks lying about the city and stock up at convenience stores before heading into your next big encounter. For an extra boost, you can eat special ‘nether food’ that even adds a temporary buff after you eat it. Also, don’t be afraid to spend some of your upgrades on expanding your food storage – it may not be the flashiest enhancement but trust us, you’ll be glad to have those extra dango to chow down on when things start to heat up. If you haven’t pre-ordered the digital Deluxe Edition, you can still do so and enjoy a head start. The Deluxe Edition features the full base game along with the Shinobi Outfit, Kunai Weapon item and the Streetwear Outfit Pack. All physical and digital pre-orders for the Deluxe Edition will also include the Hannya outfit and the Premium Biker Outfit Pack (which comes with eight color variants for the Biker Outfit) to wear in-game. 13. Hey everyone- My name is Darren Bridges, and I’m the lead co-op designer for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. To celebrate Legends’ inclusion as a bonus game in this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup, I wanted to give you all a window into our development philosophy and process. For me, the journey started in 2016, when Nate Fox showed me the original pitch for Ghost of Tsushima and asked if I’d lead the design on the cooperative mode. I was excited… and intimidated! I knew it would be a challenge. Concept art of our playable heroes I happily agreed to work on it, and my first goal was to make sure we had the flexibility to make decisions that would enable a great co-op experience. A lot of the choices that work in single-player don’t translate well to multiplayer content (and vice versa). After several pitch attempts, we came up with one that really resonated: co-op would be set in a world of supernatural tales told by an eccentric storyteller that Jin meets in his travels. This “Legends” story framework gave us freedom to design and optimize the experience to be inviting, challenging, and enjoyable for multiple players, while still connecting thematically to the world and characters of Ghost of Tsushima. Finding the fun… with friends (or randos)! Once we had established a versatile foundation, we needed to ask ourselves- what actually makes co-op fun? There are many good answers, but here are three major elements that we focused on: #1: Co-op is fun when you can play with other people This seems obvious- if you don’t have other players, it’s not really co-op! But a lot of design decisions can make it easier or harder to play together. We wanted to streamline the experience and avoid decisions that would separate players or make it hard to matchmake. Here are some of the features that make it easier to play together: Short tutorial: The training mission takes about 10 minutes, and then you can immediately start matchmaking or playing with friends. Wide availability: One of my early mantras in development was “The best feature we can add for co-op is all of your friends.” We made the decision ahead of release to offer the mode to everyone who owned Ghost of Tsushima rather than as a paid DLC Focused matchmaking, and Join In Progress: We intentionally designed our difficulty structure and Quick Play system to minimize the total number of matchmaking pools. This makes it easy to play the type of content you’re interested in while minimizing the amount of time you have to wait for a match. Additionally, if other players disconnect during a session, you can activate matchmaking again to fill their spot and keep going. Escalating, Fresh Challenge: As you start replaying missions on harder difficulties, you’ll notice the introduction of new mechanics, rules, objectives, and enemies. This helps the content stay fresh and surprising, and also increases the necessity of working together as you get deeper into the experience. An early prototype of co-op puzzles #2: It’s fun to be a hero with an audience It feels great to pull off a perfect parry counter or a headshot, but it’s even better when you know that someone watched you do it. Legends gives a lot of opportunities for players to be the “hero of the moment.” Death from Above: My personal favorite co-op hero moment is to jump off a high point into a skirmish, and assassinate an enemy right in front of my allies. It makes me happy every time I manage it, and it makes me laugh when other people do it in front of me. Ultimate Moves: One of our designers pointed out early the importance of audio for Ultimates. No matter how far away you are, you can hear the battle cry of another player using their Ultimate move… and when you’re laying on the ground and need help, it’s the best sound in the world. Speaking of laying on the ground- the opposite side of being a hero is being helped by your fellow heroes. I am decent at Legends, but I still make dumb mistakes. Every time I get wounded in the first wave of a Survival match, I laugh to myself when someone kindly comes over to help me up. If only they knew they were helping up the lead designer… they’d probably be shaking their heads. Four heroes stand at the ready #3: It’s fun to work together In our very first co-op playtests, we would ask players two survey questions: “Did you feel like you were contributing to the success of the team,” and “Did you see other players contributing to the success of the team”? We didn’t want Legends to feel like you were just playing a solo game with other people nearby. The essence of cooperation is working together, and we wanted the game to invite players to do so at every opportunity. Easy Communication: It’s easy to work together if you’re on microphones with friends, but the Ping system allows players to coordinate actions even without voice communication. Shared Success: Whenever possible, we designed the game to align players’ goals. Using a “Gift of the Kami” in Survival will benefit everyone (and if you coordinate, you can optimize the value). When you hit a Healing Drum, it will heal you, but also anyone else nearby (and you can Ping it first to let others know you’re going to activate it). Purifying Cursed Gear items grants a currency reward to you, but also to everyone else who finishes the match. Enemy and Encounter Design: Many of the enemies and mechanics you’ll encounter in Legends are specifically designed to invite coordination. Soul-Linked enemies must be defeated at the same time, or they’ll come back to life. Enemies with Attuned armor can be defeated more quickly if they’re first damaged by a player with a matching Attuned sword, or a shot from a Spirit Bow. Even the encounter design contributes- it feels great to sneak up together on two unsuspecting enemies and take them both down before they even know you are there. One of our earliest mock-ups of potential classes Legendary Classes We always planned on having Hero Classes to help enable cooperation, but the mechanical depth and cosmetic style evolved over time. Our first pass at Gear was more like the single-player systems in Ghost. As the mode grew, we decided to switch to a loot-based system, which was a better fit for the replayable gameplay we were building. We also added class-specific tech trees, unique Ultimate moves, and signature gear items. With each addition, the classes and their gameplay styles became more distinguished and engaging. Hero classes originally had no distinct visuals except for the mask they wore and the class icon over their head. Players weren’t able to distinguish them, so we made a big shift to allocate specific cosmetic sets to specific classes. Later, we also added class-specific voice acting to help give them more character. Monstrous Style The visual style for Legends was undefined for a long time- most of it was implemented during the last 9 months of development. Our earliest breakthrough was the concept art for the main villain, Iyo. We had requested some villain sketches, and the concept team created two very different but very awesome variants- a pristine, elegant, but unsettling human-scale woman, and a giant, building-size monster in a terrifying mask. Both variants were so compelling that we decided to develop them into a two-form raid boss, which eventually became a visual touchstone for everything in Legends- from the Story Missions to the Raid world, and even the main title art. Concept art of Iyo, our villain This pattern was true of the Raid in general- it was a massive investment, but the benefits extended beyond the mission itself. We believed from the beginning of development that Legends needed a “North Star” for the players to work toward- something that would justify and reward all the effort they put into building up their gear and skill set. The Raid would be the most challenging experience for players, but it would also be the most cooperative. For Story and Survival missions, the cooperative mechanics are mostly optional, but in the Raid we could completely put players’ lives in the hands of their allies. We described the Raid as “an escape room, but with enemies who are actively trying to kill you.” The final boss battle came together very late- so late that we were afraid we might have to cut or delay it. But we knew it was vital to the macro of the game, so we redirected resources to make sure we could finish it, and it was definitely worth the effort. The final battle delivered on the cooperative experience we wanted, while also allowing players to challenge Iyo face to face. Very early prototype of co-op platforming A Spirit of Cooperation We worked to build a cooperative experience within the game- but it’s been equally awesome to see the cooperative spirit that has grown in the community. Here are some of the highlights: Free Rides: One player has been completing Survival Nightmare solo (which is mindblowing on its own), then activating matchmaking to bring in three random players as the mission completed so they would get instant rewards. Helpful Allies: It’s common to see social media posts asking questions or requesting support, and to see a flood of players happy to give answers and to shepherd a player through challenging content as needed. Silent Respect: I’ve personally played so many matches in 2-Player Story mode with a random player where we worked together throughout, completed the mission, and bowed in respect at the end. It’s a beautiful feeling, and is exactly what we wanted to enable from the beginning of the project. Conclusion It’s been an incredible challenge, but also an incredible privilege to be able to build Legends. The entire Sucker Punch team worked very hard to deliver on the vision, and we’re so happy that the content is now open to a wider audience. Thank you to everyone who has already played and to everyone giving it a try this month. Maybe we’ll even get matched into a game together soon! View the full article
  14. Hello, Travelers! Today we’re pleased to share with you the latest information about Genshin Impact’s Version 2.6 “Zephyr of the Violet Garden” arriving on March 30! With an all-new area added, we can soon head to the westernmost of Liyue, delve deep into this unfathomable area, and continue a new chapter in the story of the Traveler Twins together with Dainsleif. On the other side of the sea, life in Inazuma has taken on a new look after the Sakoku Decree was abolished. The Magnificent Irodori Festival will invite many in and outside of Inazuma to celebrate a time of arts and culture. At the same time, Kamisato Ayato, the young master leading one of Inazuma’s most powerful clans into a new era, will make his debut as a playable five-star with an exciting Story Quest. Down Into The Chasm For a long time, The Chasm has been Liyue’s primary source of ores, especially for its famous porcelain goods. Overlooking this area, one can see that the soil in this area are tinted in violet-red. Recently, this area has been sealed off due to a series of mysterious events. However, as Travelers, you can join a team of experts from various backgrounds to explore the underground. What we see above the ground is only the tip of The Chasm. The vast underground space has been hollowed out layer by layer by generations of miners, and unique fluorescent creatures thrive here. Meanwhile, unknown dangers also seem to be paving their way to the known world above. In addition to hilichurls, Treasure Hoarders, and the Fatui who have snuck in, you will also encounter the new boss Ruin Serpent, as well as enemies from the Abyss. But you will not be left unprepared in the dark. The Lumenstone Adjuvant is a useful tool to light up your path. Upgrading this gadget will assist you in exploration and also grants you plenty of rewards, including a 4-star Weapon Billet and an all-new Namecard. If you succeed in reaching the bottom of The Chasm, you will meet with the long-lost Dainsleif again among the ancient ruins and relics. More about the Traveler siblings and the secrets of Khaenri’ah will be uncovered during the new Archon Quest “Requiem of the Echoing Depths.” Festive Season in Inazuma Version 2.6 will feature “Hues of the Violet Garden,” our first seasonal event celebrating an Inazuma festival! Hosted by the Yashiro Commission and Yae Miko, the Magnificent Irodori Festival is a cultural event to commemorate a group of five talented poets from ancient Inazuma named “The Five Kasen.” This year’s Irodori Festival invites not only local talents but also creative minds from Mondstadt and Liyue. Venti, Xingqiu, and many others we haven’t seen for a while will be visiting during the festival. We will leave most stories and fun for you to experience for yourself, but we would like to briefly introduce the games that you can win rewards in during the festival. The Irodori Festival will test your creativity and comprehension of different arts and cultures through four games and challenges. Both “The Moon and Stars Inscribe” and “The Floral Courtyard” require an eye for beauty. The former will require you to take photographs of things related to the theme to inspire the two poets and help them complete their poem of the day. “The Floral Courtyard” sponsored by Kamisato Ayaka, requires not only good taste but also dexterous hands to perform the art of flower arrangement. If you prefer something more intense, why not try the “Clash of Lone Blades”? A group of warriors, each with their own set of sword techniques, are looking for worthy opponents. For a fair duel, no Elemental Skills and Bursts are allowed, but you will be given a new sword technique known as the Parry. Furthermore, “Theater Mechanicus” is back once again, now taking less time but more strategies in each stage. If you complete all four games and challenges, don’t forget to claim great rewards and a chance to recruit Xingqiu! The Young Master of the Kamisato Clan Some of you might have heard about Kamisato Ayato from his younger sister Ayaka, Thoma, or even Arataki Itto. From the bits and pieces we know so far, Ayato seems to have quite a quirky side. He likes drinking milk tea, is good buddies with Itto, and always gives his botched cooking attempts to Thoma. One of his Passive Talents further gives him a chance to receive an additional “Suspicious” dish of the same type when cooking. However, Kamisato Ayato is acknowledged as a young but highly accomplished head by the Yashiro Commission and the Kamisato Clan. Cultured and polite, he is a man of many ways and means, able to bring his clan back to its feet in difficult times. After the Sakoku Decree is lifted, the Tenryou and Kanjou Commissions are presented with a rare, joyous occasion in this time of reform. However, troubles also brew beneath the festive mood. In Ayato’s Story Quest “Cypressus Custos Chapter,” you will have a chance to witness this young master’s art of strategy in handling the unusual situation. In combat, Kamisato Ayato wields a sword and is a master of the Kamisato Art Tachi Jutsu, just like his sister. With the Hydro Vision, Ayato can unleash large AoE damage in a short amount of time, and is capable of increasing the effects of his party’s Normal Attacks. By using his Elemental Skill, Ayato shifts positions to enter the Takimeguri Kanka state and leaves a watery illusion at his original location. The watery illusion will explode, dealing AoE Hydro damage. In the Takimeguri Kanka state, Ayato’s Normal Attacks turn into blindingly fast Shunsuiken attacks that deal AoE Hydro damage. After a Shunsuiken attack hits an opponent, it will grant Ayato the Namisen effect, increasing the DMG dealt by Shunsuiken based on Ayato’s current Max HP. Ayato can gain extra stacks of Namisen effect when he uses his Elemental Skill and when his watery illusion explodes with one of his Passive Talents. However, please be aware that the Takimeguri Kanka state will be cleared once Ayato leaves the field or uses his Elemental Skill again. Ayato’s Elemental Burst will unleash a realm in which Bloomwater Blades will rain down and deal Hydro AoE damage to enemies within. Meanwhile, the realm will also increase the Normal Attack Damage of characters within. Kamisato Ayato will be featured in the first Event Wish, coinciding with Venti’s rerun. Following her brother, Kamisato Ayaka will have her Event Wish during the later phase of Version 2.6. With Version 2.6, we’ve prepared more fun and challenges for you. There are still mysteries unsolved in the depths of The Chasm, waiting to be revealed in future updates. But that’s all for our sharing today, and we look forward to meeting you soon in the game! 15. How do you start a game? That is such a difficult question. There are so many things a game needs to do for a player at the start; introduce them to the world, teach them how to play and most importantly, hook them in. We spent a lot of time and effort on the beginning of Paradise Killer to try to get it right. I haven’t done the maths on this but I know that the start of the game is the most commonly shared video clip from Paradise Killer on social media so I guess something worked! In Paradise Killer you play Lady Love Dies (LD), an investigator brought out of exile to investigate the crime to end all crimes on the bizarre Paradise Island. We knew that the start of the game would depict LD arriving on the island and introducing the player to the world. As we were making an open world game, we wanted to start by showing the player the whole world at the start. The island is quite big and you can explore the whole thing, but you don’t usually get to see the scale of what you are about to explore in games. We hoped that giving the player a bird’s-eye view of a huge vista that was ready for them would blow them away and whet their appetite for exploration. With this in mind, our initial story draft started with LD arriving by plane, allowing the player to see the island as they flew over it. It wasn’t very exciting and it didn’t feel right for our game, so we shelved the idea and worked on other things while we thought about it. Eventually Phil, our technical director, said to me: “I want an intro like the beginning of Bayonetta”. That’s quite the challenge! For those who haven’t played it, the beginning of Bayonetta sees the player fighting a huge army of angel freaks on a ruined cathedral that’s plummeting through the sky. It is one of the best game beginnings anyone has ever made, it really makes an impression. I thought to myself, “how do we make something like that in a first person narrative game?” After abandoning the arriving by plane intro, the story had developed in other ways and we had decided that the exiled Lady Love Dies was going to be in some kind of prison cell called the Idle Lands, high above Paradise Island. One of the issues we had to solve was working out how we’d get the player down from there at the beginning of the game. Our first idea was to have Lydia pick you up in her car. Lydia drives a car that can travel through dimensions so it would make sense that she could find a way to be parked way up in the sky in the Idle Lands. However, we just didn’t think that was very exciting. Luckily, we had decided early on in development that there wouldn’t be any fall damage in the game because the game is about free exploration and we didn’t want to punish that. Alongside needing to figure out a good intro, we also needed a good way to communicate this, so we decided to make the player jump down from the Idle Lands at the start of the game. We tried it out, and taking a great big running jump and flinging yourself into oblivion felt great! As they fell the player could see the whole island stretched out below them and start picking out places of interest for their investigation. It served many purposes. A very early version of the jump and view of the open world This fall down the island felt great but we knew we could make it more stylish. I love late title cards in games, so we decided to put the Paradise Killer title card when the player lands from their fall. It is a great moment of impact, and tying the two together worked really well. An early version of the moment of landing We were pretty happy with the intro at this point, but we knew we could still push it further. At the time we were working with a simple sample library for our music, and we hit upon the idea of taking one of the short, looping tracks and removing all the low end and percussive elements to make it a more stripped back, ambient track which you’d hear whilst exploring the Idle Lands prison. We originally had a plan to pull the remaining layers in as you unlocked the prison gates to Paradise Island, but we later had the idea to change it so that it would start transitioning as you jumped off the ledge, with the music swelling as you plunge into the abyss of crime. When we bought in our composer Barry “Epoch” Topping, he built further upon this by providing original music, as well as creating a wonderful bass slide which happens as you launch yourself out of exile. This ended up being an incredibly powerful moment which people talk to us about excitedly all the time. The intro to Paradise Killer took a great number of iterations to get right but it was more than worth it. The beginning of Paradise Killer teaches the player the rules of exploration and excites them about the open world, but most importantly, it surprises them. One of the key questions we ask ourselves about our games through development is, “what can we do here to surprise players”? Surprise is a wonderful emotion that elicits joy and helps engage players with the game. Thankfully we seem to have achieved what we set out to do with Paradise Killer’s intro and got this moment right. Players love the surprise of leaping down to Paradise Island, and we love seeing them get excited by it! View the full article
  16. Lumos! Hi, I’m Chandler Wood. I’m a Slytherin and the Community Manager here at Avalanche Software. It’s been a while since we first revealed Hogwarts Legacy. Back then I still hadn’t even joined the studio. Now I’m part of this incredible team that has put a ton of effort into making sure our gameplay reveal would be worth the wait. We couldn’t be more excited that it’s finally here. Play Video We’ve all dreamt of receiving our letters, attending Hogwarts, and forging a legacy of our own. As Wizarding World fans, we’ve wondered what it would be like for our stories to be found between the pages of a book, because that magic-filled world has always felt close to our own. Hogwarts Legacy is your story, rooted firmly in wizarding world lore, and it starts with creating the witch or wizard you want to be. An Authentic Wizarding World I joined Avalanche in late 2021, but the team had already been hard at work for many years. I’m still reeling that I get to work on a project that captures the magic, spells, beasts, people, stories, and wonder of the wizarding world. As Community Manager, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to a development team full of fans making an authentic wizarding world adventure. One of the first things I did was ask Game Director Alan Tew what fans love and expect from the Wizarding World. Our resulting conversations could fill tomes, but when I asked him to settle it into two sentences, he told me, “The most ever-present part of the Wizarding World is its magic, and the playful nature and ‘realness’ of its distinct rules should fuel a surprising, dark mystery that tests the combined resources of those who discover it. But just as important are the opportunities to experience hundreds of memorable moments, small and large, that fans grew up with and know by heart: from being Sorted in the Great Hall, exploring a new secret chamber in Hogwarts, or impersonating others with Polyjuice Potion; to protecting innocents from a dangerous troll, dodging fireballs from a Hungarian Horntail, or soaring into the sky on the back of a friendly Hippogriff.” All of these elements are imperative to the experience, but at the center of it all is a fully explorable Hogwarts replete with secrets to discover and mysteries to unravel. To learn more about our version of Hogwarts, I had to go to an expert. Hogwarts Environmental Lead Boston Madsen has lived the life of a huge Harry Potter fan. She knows the books inside and out, a crucial resource when it comes to designing a Hogwarts that can embrace feelings of both familiarity and discovery. “We built the Hogwarts we as fans ourselves wanted to explore,” Boston said. “I think anyone who has read the books, whether they are an artist or not, has built a version of Hogwarts in their heads.” Despite this being our version of Hogwarts, it’s a world you’ll instantly recognize. “There are familiar haunts like the Great Hall, clocktower and hospital wing, but also completely new places like the bustling kitchens,” Boston said. “Having felt like a student in these halls myself through the development of this game, I can honestly say there are still areas I come across that I didn’t know about before.” Beyond just architecture and design, I’ve been consistently amazed at how much our Hogwarts feels like the magical school I’ve always wanted to attend, including extracurricular activities like avoiding Peeves while sneaking into the Restricted Section of the library. Life at Hogwarts is as much about finding secret chambers and sneaking into the prefects’ bathroom as it is learning to cast spells and brew potions. Depending on which Hogwarts house you’re in, you’ll get to see each common room’s distinct architecture, décor, and entrances. My fellow Slytherins will be particularly fond of our common room entrance vanishing into a wall behind the slithering body of an enormous stone serpent. We’re also excited to show you our takes on the not often seen Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff common rooms, Ravenclaws rest high in a tower while Hufflepuffs reside in a cozy basement. Expect more in-depth looks at the common rooms later this year. I can hardly tear myself away from exploring the castle, but this game goes well beyond the walls of Hogwarts to explore the village of Hogsmeade and the surrounding countryside. Hogsmeade is home to enchanting new characters with rich stories and personalities of their own, as well as vendors who will provide supplies you need for your schooling and other adventures. Part of the magic of Hogwarts Legacy is exploring familiar locations in a new light, like just how close Hogsmeade is to Hogwarts or seeing the Forbidden Forest in the daylight. But to really offer a sense of freedom, we wanted to expand the scope of what you know about the land surrounding the castle. “We wanted you to have new locations to discover; to see what lies around and beyond the Black Lake, to meet new witches and wizards in the dwellings that dot the landscape beyond Hogsmeade and learn what other undiscovered chambers lie within Hogwarts or scattered across the Scottish Highlands,” Alan told me. As game developers, we’ve labored over maintaining authenticity while making sure the game is still a fun experience. “There were hundreds of choices that had to be made between lore and gameplay and even some of the differences between each film and book,” Alan said. “Although we wanted to present a new interpretation of the wizarding world for gamers and prioritized a fun game before book or film authenticity, describing it this way can never capture how exhaustively we strived for authenticity and immediate recognition in everything we did.” Live the Unwritten In many ways your legacy in the late 1800s wizarding world will be familiar to everything you loved about the Harry Potter series—discovering magic, making new friends, and being a hero. Narrative Lead Moira Squier offered me some insight into these parallels. “Players will get to experience what it was like for Harry starting at a new wizarding school and knowing no one at all. And, like Harry, the player’s character is a bit of a celebrity from the outset due to the fact that they are starting as a fifth-year and because they survived a—” Sorry Moira, no spoilers! Let’s just say your arrival to Hogwarts is rather eventful. Your ties to an ancient magic put you on a collision course with a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok, aided by his alliance with the Dark wizard Victor Rookwood, who both present formidable threats to the entire wizarding world. “Ranrok has seen a glimmer of a magic that wizardkind tried to hide – even from themselves – and he wants that power in particular. His worldview is skewed by his hatred of wizards, which makes his alliance with Victor Rookwood particularly tenuous,” Moira said. “Once Ranrok gets what he wants, no one will be able to stop him and the wizarding world will be doomed.” To unearth the mysteries behind ancient magic and stop Ranrok’s rebellion, you’ll need a friend and mentor to guide you along the way. Enter Professor Eleazar Fig, whose investigations into rumors of a goblin rebellion have earned him an uneasy skepticism from the Ministry of Magic. Fig is just one of many characters who will play a part in your journey. Whether it’s fellow students becoming companions, professors teaching you new spells, or even some assistance from those who reside outside the Hogwarts walls, there’s no shortage of friendly faces to provide a helping hand or a welcome distraction. You may even come across some familiar names, like a Weasley or two. Define Your Combat Style Your studies at Hogwarts will help you overcome the mysteries and dangers that lurk beyond—and even within—the walls of the castle. As you learn from your professors and classmates, you’ll gain new spells and abilities to use in combat and puzzles throughout Hogwarts Legacy. A variety of spells provides different ways to approach combat. Do you go in wands-blazing by using Accio to pull an enemy close before blasting them with Incendio? Or do you cast the Disillusionment Charm to take a stealthier approach, finishing off enemies with a silent Petrificus Totalus takedown? Different techniques will be required to counter enemy strengths and weaknesses that should make every encounter feel engaging. As a gamer who likes a bit of a challenge myself, I’m happy to say that we’ve been working hard to make sure combat in Hogwarts Legacy has a depth and challenge for players who want it. Whether you just want to experience the story or make every swish and flick of your wand matter, a range of difficulty options will be available to meet various skill levels enabling players to experience the game in a way most enjoyable to them. Anyone familiar with the wizarding world knows that magic goes beyond just wand work. Magical plants and potions bring even more tools to each fight. You’ll be able to brew Wiggenweld potions for healing and use a Mandrake seedling to incapacitate enemies with its cry. As you continue your studies at Hogwarts, you’ll learn more recipes for potions and how to handle an assortment of magical plants. A Single-Player Action RPG Our Hogwarts Legacy State of Play presentation showed quite a few other things: The Room of Requirement, taming magical beasts, customizable gear that you can loot and earn throughout the world, and a whole lot more. We’ll be diving into many of these topics in detail before we launch. However, there is one more thing I wanted to make sure we addressed plainly: Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player open-world action RPG. While you can have NPC companions join you on your adventures, the story is about your own legacy. These are only pieces of the immense experience we’re building in Hogwarts Legacy. Game Director Alan Tew best sums up how everything comes together: With Hogwarts Legacy, we had the incredible opportunity to tell any story we wanted within the wizarding world. One fantasy stood out. Many fans of Harry Potter imagined what it would be like to receive their own Hogwarts letter, be sorted, and attend Hogwarts. More than anything else, we wanted to allow fans, after all these years, to finally tell their story, their way, at the most beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry. Only an open-world action RPG could capture the breadth of our fantasies. Your story deserves to be as thrilling as other wizarding heroes. We start you as a late-fifth year so you needn’t hold back on the kinds of adventures (and themes) you might want to explore. We place you in the 1800s to ensure your legend is never overshadowed by any other hero. And we invent a new dark mystery so your conflict never feels like a retread of something you’ve seen before. With your continued support, we hope to explore even more in the future! We are honored to have been entrusted with the freedom to create a brand-new wizarding world experience for fans around the world. As a fan and gamer myself, I can’t wait to talk more with you throughout the year about the incredible experience Hogwarts Legacy will bring to Wizarding World fans and gamers alike. From all of us here at Avalanche Software, we hope you enjoyed this look at the game and we can’t wait to show you more soon. View the full article
  17. It’s finally happening! On March 31 exactly two weeks from today, you’ll be able to reunite with Quill in Moss: Book II. As the next game in the franchise, Book II builds on the story you started with Quill in the original Moss. In this continuation of the journey, the stakes are higher than ever as Quill works to save the world of Moss and end the merciless rule of the Arcane. New allies, old friends, and the very world around you will offer help along the way, but in the end, it is you alone who can lift Quill up to save this world, and together, rise to legend. To celebrate this announcement, I had the pleasure of sitting down with PlayStation’s Justin Massongill and Tim Turi to record an episode of PlayStation Underground to give you a sneak peek at some of the environments, enemies, and challenges you’ll encounter in this new adventure. While I showed off some new, unique features—including a teaser for a pretty big encounter that Quill is about to face—I purposefully left out a lot of really cool things that we want you to experience on your own. And I have a feeling you’ll be glad we didn’t spoil them for you. Play Video If you don’t have time to watch the entire PlayStation Underground episode, here are some highlights that I think you’ll enjoy: We start the episode in the gardens, an area just outside of the castle that you traveled to in the first game. There’s a reason you made the journey to the castle, but we won’t spoil that for the few of you who have yet to play Moss. By now, you’re a couple chapters into the game where you’ll have already met a few new characters, and both you (the Reader) and Quill have unlocked new abilities. As the Reader, you have a real physical presence in the world, and in addition to guiding Quill, you’re also able to reach in and interact with the environment—something you can expect to do in all new ways in Book II. With your new nature attunement abilities, you can now grow vine bridges and paint vines on the walls to help Quill access places she otherwise wouldn’t have been able to go. This will be important as you travel through the game. While running on the vine bridges is exciting, since Moss, Quill has learned a new skill of her own: climbing. With your ability to grow vines on the walls, and her ability to climb, she can now reach high-up ledges. This is very exciting, as it allows us to create new platforming challenges that Quill will need your help navigating. But these gardens aren’t all flowers and butterflies—there’s danger that lurks in the shadows. And as you travel towards the conservatory, you’ll face the Ripper, a new enemy (one of many!) that you can grab and interact with. It’s super fun to wind them up and release them like wrecking balls. Let’s just say that sometimes you will want to keep them around to help solve puzzles. When playing Book II, you’ll travel to exciting new places, including the Foundry beneath the castle, the epicenter of where Arcane weapons are forged. Luckily, Quill is gifted a hammer to better equip her for this daunting challenge. As you’ll see, it’s quite hefty in size, which makes it A lot of fun to crush things. And with both you and Quill working together, it can be used not only to make scrap metal out of armored enemies, but also as a crucial tool to get out of other predicaments. Along with new weapons—yes, I said weapons plural ;) —you’ll encounter new enemies as you progress further into Arcane territory. Here’s a quick glimpse of the Bomber: As you would expect, you’ll need to watch your step as it tosses mines your way. And be prepared, as it takes more than a simple strike to take care of this threat… And while I’ve said it before, I just can’t stress this enough: the journey in Moss: Book II will be trying—filled with triumph and heartbreak alike—which is why Quill needs you by her side more than ever. Your adventure will be grander than before. Filled with more emotion. More interaction. More challenges. It won’t be easy, but saving the world never is. And if you think Quill’s hammer is impressive, let’s just say you haven’t seen anything yet… The team at Polyarc is extremely proud of this game and we cannot wait to share it with you. And trust us, this was only a small taste of this all-new adventure. We hope you loved what you saw today, and that you’ll fall in love with Quill all over again in the coming weeks. Seriously, can’t March 31 get here any sooner? View the full article
  18. In Ghostwire: Tokyo, you awake amidst the mass disappearance of nearly all of Tokyo’s population, paving the way for otherworldly Visitors to take over the city. Resembling real-life superstitions, folklore, yokai and urban legends, these Visitors won’t be stopped by conventional weapons alone. You’ll need to work alongside an unlikely ally – the spirit of a grizzled detective named KK – to have the powers and skills necessary to hunt down the perpetrators behind Tokyo’s vanishing and restore reality to the city. In addition to gear like a powerful bow and arrow and mystic techniques like Ethereal Weaving, knowledge is also a useful tool for solving the paranormal threat enveloping Tokyo. Here are just a few examples of the beings – both hostile and potentially friendly – you’ll encounter in the haunted streets of Tokyo, as well as a little intel to aid you in your ghost hunting adventure. Kuchisake Based on the urban legend of the kuchisake-onna , AKA “Slit-Mouthed Woman,” Ghostwire’s Kuchisake is a vicious Visitor in the form of a masked woman wielding a massive pair of scissors. In the original folklore, the kuchisake-onna asks its victims if they think she is beautiful, only to reveal her disfigured grin. She then repeats the question, often maiming the victim with similar scars if they disingenuously maintain that she’s pretty or killing them outright if they say the opposite. “At least some part of including the kuchisake-onna came down to how ubiquitous the concept is in Japan as an urban legend,” explains Game Director Kenji Kimura. “That said, what ultimately led to the inclusion was the fact that they don’t look like monsters at first glance, just regular women wearing coats. As such, they complemented one of our goals for the game: to portray the unsettling and extraordinary within entirely ordinary settings. As they get closer to the player, you’ll be able to hear them clacking and snipping while they open and close them. It makes for an extra-immersive aural sensation when experienced through the PlayStation 5’s 3D audio capabilities.” A clever misdirection can help prevent you becoming the kuchisake-onna’s prey and besting Ghostwire’s version requires a similar approach. When she closes in, use your Ethereal Weaving to summon a blocking barrier at just the right time to parry her attacks but beware, even deadlier foes lurk along Tokyo’s alleyways. “Ghostwire: Tokyo also features another variety of kuchisake-onna in red clothing. That version is inspired by a different urban legend involving a woman in red,” explains Kimura. “In that sense, the kuchisake-onna in Ghostwire aren’t just pulled directly from legends and folklore, but more like a combination and reimagining of the concepts.” Tengu While Visitors like the bloodthirsty Kuchisake pose a serious threat to the under-prepared, not every supernatural being in Tokyo is an enemy. Some, like the wandering tengu floating around the city’s skyline, can serve as crucial assets in your mission. Look near the top of buildings (or tap into your Spectral Vision ability) to locate these airborne yokai and use your Grapple ability to hoist yourself up onto Tokyo’s rooftops! On top of unlocking whole new areas to explore, the city’s skyline offers ample vantage points to get the drop on foes as well as chances for a breathtaking snapshot in Ghostwire’s Photo Mode. “The main priority for the yokai designs in Ghostwire: Tokyo was to ensure they would all be unique and easily distinguishable,” says Lead Character Artist Yoshifumi Hattori. “In the tengu’s case, that meant having them wear clothing similar to yamabushi, a sort of spiritual hermit that lives in the mountains. We opted to make them into bird tengu specifically because we felt that something more bestial would fit in well with the cityscape. Tokyo is full of crows, after all.” “There are many different stories of tengu depending on the region and time period,” adds Kimura. “The ones that caught our attention were those that depicted people being whisked from one place to another in the blink of an eye by tengu, as well as the creatures whipping up strong winds to lift objects into the air. These things made us think it would be fun to have them transport players to high places in the game.” Tanuki As mischievous as they are often adorable, tanukis are a famous staple of traditional Japanese folklore. Often depicted as tricksters, these mythical raccoon dogs have been known to possess shapeshifting powers. “We gave them a distinctive way of speaking by having them use the regional dialect prevalent in the part of Japan famous for tanuki legends,” says Kimura. “Beyond that, each of the creatures is characterized by varied clothing, accessories and headwear.” As you roam Tokyo, you’ll discover a group of these lil’ guys have gotten themselves lost in the streets. Wrangling them up may net you a nice reward, but it will also require some keen eyes – tanukis are masters of disguise, after all. See a sign or a bowl of ramen that’s just a bit out of place? It could be a tanuki! Shine Dancer Shine Dancers get their name and appearance from teru teru bōzu – traditional paper dolls commonly crafted as adorable charms wishing for good weather. However, the airborne Visitors taking to Tokyo’s skies are less a lucky omen and more a threat capable of ambushing from the air (or even hiding as a harmless piece of fabric, so keep your eyes peeled.) “For Ghostwire: Tokyo, it was important to us that we portray the unsettling and extraordinary within entirely ordinary settings,” says Kimura. “To achieve that vision, we went out of our way to incorporate things that look like ordinary people on the outside or otherwise appear to be harmless but can take on an eerie edge based on interpretation.” “The teru-teru bōzu charms are one such example of this. In Japan, these are objects that are hung under the eaves of buildings in order to ward off rain and invite good fortune. However, viewed another way, they look like dolls being hung by their necks. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition, which is what makes the Shine Dancers one of my favorite Visitors.” Kappa Like their counterparts in Japanese folklore, kappas in Ghostwire are amphibious yokai found near water. They possess useful Magatama that can unlock your potential to learn greater skills but are also slippery little creatures to catch. “Kappa weren’t all that difficult to incorporate into [Ghostwire: Tokyo],” Kimura says. “If you look at Tokyo’s cityscape, you’ll actually find a surprising number of rivers and ponds, as well as fountains located in commercial facilities. These sorts of water sources are familiar sights to anyone living in the city.” “The kappa in our game are the [variety] people readily picture in their minds, including their usual head platter and shell,” Hattori adds. “When it came to the finer details and whatnot, we added elements that are more typically seen in creature designs made outside of Japan.” Thankfully, like the myths they are based on, kappas in Ghostwire can’t resist their favorite snack as bait. Those familiar with the kappa’s folklore already know what food we’re talking about, but here’s a hint: it’s a green vegetable renowned for staying cool. As for where you can get one, you may have some luck at a nearby shop or kiosk… Nekomata Speaking of shops, convenience stores and other kiosks around town may be operated by a new breed of shopkeeper: a nekomata yokai resembling a two-tailed cat. “The original idea was to make shops places that players could wander into when they needed a breather exploring the city and battling Visitors. We thought it would be nice if the shops could have something in them that was calming for the player, and that’s how we came to having nekomata run the shops,” says Kimura. Ghostwire’s nekomata are happy to offer the player provisions, ammunition and other supplies…for a fee, of course. You’ll need to acquire a special currency called Meika from completing quests to afford their wares. From time to time, you may be tasked with acquiring some special items for the nekomata as well. We suggest doing these favors for Ghostwire’s feline friends – they may not believe in a free lunch but they do know how to reward a hard-working ghost hunter. “There’s plenty of rewards to be had by helping them track down the items they need, but there’s also a relaxing element to the whole dynamic too,” says Kimura. “When you deliver items to them, the nekomata will actually wear them. These are things like lion masks, bottle gourds, hairpins, and more. We hope players notice just how cute they look when they wear these accessories.” “Yokai aren’t harmful to humans as a rule. Even with one specific variety, you’ll find stories of them both attacking and helping humans,” Kimura goes on to explain. “If anything, they tend to take a more neutral position in regards to humanity. This is because, conceptually, yokai were originally intended to personify natural or otherwise inexplicable phenomena.” “In other words, while you might not see them, they could always be nearby, going about their own business. You can contrast this to the sort of monsters you often find in urban legends. Many of them seem to be spawned from the negative emotions that people carry with them, their anxieties and so forth. I think that’s why, by comparison, you tend to hear more stories about them harming people. This is the thinking that informs Ghostwire: Tokyo – a game in which players acquire yokai powers and use them to fight the monsters of urban legend.” Ghostwire: Tokyo launches March 25 on PlayStation 5 – pre-order today to receive the Premium Biker outfit pack and Hannya outfit items! Players with an active PlayStation® Plus membership may also receive 10% off pre-purchase of the digital version of the game at PlayStation Store. Other terms and conditions apply, offers may not be available in all regions. View the full article

  20. Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online arrive for PlayStation 5 today with a host of new improvements for new and returning players — plus, GTA Online is free* exclusively on PlayStation 5 through June 14 — meaning there’s never been a better time to experience all that GTA Online has to offer. From the new Career Builder’s Criminal Careers through to GTA Online’s latest adventure, The Contract featuring Dr. Dre, as well as the game’s 40+ massive updates since launch, there’s something in GTA Online for everyone. 7-Day PlayStation Plus Trial Players who redeem GTA Online Standalone on PS5 and don’t have an active PlayStation Plus subscription will be able to claim a 7-day PlayStation Plus trial** from in-game starting today. Steps to claim: 1. Load GTA Online on your PS5. 2. Load online multiplayer and the game will link you to a PlayStation Store page if you don’t have an active PlayStation Plus subscription. 3. Claim your 7-day PlayStation Plus trial — at end of trial, subscription continues automatically unless cancelled. GTAV and GTA Online with the power of PlayStation 5 Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online go further on PlayStation 5 with a host of features that take special advantage of the PlayStation 5 console. The power of PlayStation 5 delivers new levels of fidelity and performance, allowing for the new graphics modes to deliver up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second gameplay, HDR lighting options, ray tracing, texture upgrades, and more. Play Video Jump into the action faster thanks to PlayStation 5’s SSD, with improved loading times allowing the world of Los Santos and Blaine County to load in faster than ever before. Play Video Feel every moment of the action through the DualSense wireless controller’s adaptive triggers and advanced haptic feedback, giving players the ability to experience new sensations such as changes in the road surface texture, additional sensations from specific weather effects, directional damage, feedback from explosions, and more. Hear the action with pinpoint precision with Tempest 3D AudioTech — the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of nearby gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more. Story Mode and GTA Online Character Transfers Kickstart your criminal Career It all starts with the new Career Builder. For new players, or anyone who’d like a fresh start, the Career Builder helps you get set up with the equipment you need to kick off your rise through the criminal ranks across Los Santos and Blaine County. You begin by choosing from one of four criminal career paths in GTA Online: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner, or Biker. From there, you’ll receive a cool GTA$4,000,000 to invest in crafting your illicit business, starting with a business property, a vehicle, and a weapon — with enough spare change for some upgrades and maybe a little left over. Once you’re comfortable with your choices, head straight onto the streets of Los Santos to take on the missions and get your business established. Of course, you can expand your business at any time and take on new careers as you progress up the city’s criminal food chain. Learn more about the new Career Builder here. Continuing your journey on PlayStation 5 If you have been working to build up your career over previous generations, continuing your journey on PlayStation 5 is easy. If you already have a Rockstar Games Social Club account, you will be able to migrate your GTA Online character progress from a previous generation console to PS5 upon loading up the game. This one-time migration includes any Characters, GTA$, Progression, Stats, Vehicles, Properties, Weapons, Clothing, and Player-Created Jobs***. PS4 and Xbox One players will be able to transfer both their GTAV Story Mode progress and their current GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 with a one-time migration. Players can transfer their Story Mode progress by uploading a save to the Rockstar Games Social Club. To begin this process, enter GTAV on your current PS4 account and go to the Game tab of the Pause Menu. From there, select the Upload Save Game option. Please note, you can only store one game save per platform at a time and saves will remain available to download for 90 days. Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online are available today on PS5. Download your free* copy of GTA Online on the PS5 console store now. *Offer available from March 15, 2022 until June 14, 2022. Download from PS5 console store. PlayStation Plus required to play (recurring fees apply). **7 day PlayStation Plus trial will be available to claim once per eligible person, exclusively via in-game of GTA Online Standalone on PS5 from 15 March 2022 until 14 May 2022. PlayStation Plus is a paid-for ongoing subscription with a recurring subscription fee, which after the expiry of the 7 day trial is charged automatically (at the then-current PS Store price) every month until canceled. Full terms apply: see PSN Terms of Service and PlayStation Plus Usage Terms at www.playstation.com/legal. ***For GTA Online platform migrations, purchased GTA$ can only be transferred between platforms of the same family (PS4 to PS5).
