  17. DICE has great expectations for their first person jump-em-up, Mirror’s Edge, stating that they hope the game will sell three million copies worldwide. Martin Frain, Marketing Director for DICE, has been singing praise for the hotly anticipated title. Frain believes that the look of the game shown in screenshots has garnered a lot of initial interest, saying how its unique look is easy identifiable. And it’s this exposure that will supposedly secure these sales numbers. Although, one could argue it is his job to say this… Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Okami and Psychonauts were fantastic games, with very unique visuals (especially in the case of Okami), and both sold less then bottled water for fish and other sea life. Who knows though, maybe the marketing and future mass advertising will boost sales outside of the ‘core gamers’ that peruse the Interwebs. The game still needs to prove itself though. Although current previews have been fairly positive, first person platforming is classically one of the biggest no-no’s in video gaming; along with RTS games on consoles, and Nazi imagery in games released in Germany. The game hits North America on November 11, followed by a PAL release on November 14.
  18. Spoilers abound in this week’s issue of Japan’s Famitsu magazine, with a sprinkle of new Resident Evil 5 information regarding the appearance of a new female character and the return of a familiar male antagonist. According to the publication, the mysterious female dressed in white is known as Excella Gionne, and serves as President of the African branch of TriCell pharmaceutical. Eagle-eyed readers will no doubt remember her cropping up in one of the E3 trailers for the game. Moving on, and in a revelation that is sure to have fans salivating at the lips, the mag has bagged the first images of the notorious Albert Wesker – perpetual sunglasses included. For those unfamiliar with the Resident Evil saga, Wesker has cropped up in a number of titles over the past decade, including Resident Evil (where he served as leader of the S.T.A.R.S, of which RE5 protagonist Chris Redfield was also a member), Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 5 is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 13, 2009.
  19. Not content with the million other versions of the popular multiplayer title, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced a revamped edition of Buzz! Quiz TV, to be released early November. According to the marketing spiel, the new set is a "collector's edition" featuring four Buzz! controllers, a special version of Quiz TV including 1000 new questions, and a host of improvements including full PlayStation Eye support. Most of the additional content seems to be available on the PSN already, but perhaps of most interest is the new 500-question Videogame quiz set. Expect plenty of questions along the lines of "Which console had a roughly 68% hardware failure rate at launch?" then. (I'll give you a hint: it wasn't the SNES) For those of you that love local multiplayer and have yet to pick up any of the new versions of Buzz!, consider this an essential purchase.
  20. According to the goldmine of information and speculation that is Neogaf, Level 5's hotly-anticipated title 'White Knight Chronicles' is set to be the first PlayStation 3 RPG to output at native 1080p resolution. The information comes from a preview in Japanese magazine Dengenki, which also revealed that the storyline quality will be 'on a par' with the likes of DragonQuest, the visuals are set to rival Final Fantasy, and that the gameplay owes a huge debt to Monster Hunter and similar franchises. A giant box of RPG crack, then. Set for release on December 25 in Japan, we're still awaiting confirmation of a European or US date. Here's hoping it's just around the corner.
  21. Speaking with PSU.com, Evolution Studios game director Nigel Kershaw has revealed that MotorStorm Pacific Rift will feature a total of 50 Trophies for the player to unlock via a “wide-range of different challenges." "Pacific Rift will have a total of 50 trophies which can be unlocked," said Kershaw. "These trophies are spread broadly throughout the game, featuring a wide range of different challenges to accomplish. Some will be obvious to discover and others much harder but all worth collecting." MotorStorm Pacific Rift is set to release on October 28.
  22. In an interview with 1UP, Valve Corporation co-founder Gabe Newell and Marketing Director Doug Lombardi have confirmed that free Team Fortress 2 updates offered to Xbox 360 and PC owners will not make the jump to PlayStation 3. When asked whether EA would support the transplanting of content to the PS3 version, Newell responded: "They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3." Lombardi went on to state: "We don't have PlayStation developers." Somewhat encouragingly, the decision appears to owe more to scarce resources than Valve's tempestuous relationship with Sony's machine. Newell's comments with regard to the still-hypothetical PS3 version of Left 4 Dead are revealing. Valve is an undersized company, with around 160 people on its books last time we checked (to put that figure in context, Rockstar Games employs 180 people at its San Diego studio alone). Given such scant means, it's hardly surprising that the developer has left one of the high definition consoles in the lurch. Let's hope EA's push for a PS3 Left 4 Dead is successful.
  23. LucasArts has confirmed that its ambitious Star Wars outing The Force Unleashed has notched up sales of over 1.5 million after just five days at retail. President of LucasArts Darrell Rodriguez commented: “The record-setting sales of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed shows the undiminished power of Star Wars and its popularity across all media types, including video games.†“We’re blown away by the response.†For those of you who have yet to switch to The Dark Side, the game takes place in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with players assuming control of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice. Cue copious amounts of light sabre duels and some devastating use of The Force – what more could you want?
