  1. http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/715170/bethesda-threatens-notch-over-scrolls-name/#ixzz1UNqChTmJ Posted 2 days ago - By Stephen Johnson Out of nowhere indie-game hit Minecraft has just surpassed 3 million sales, but all is not perfect in the pixelated world created by Markuss "Notch" Persson. According to Notch, developer Bethesda has threatened him over the name of his company's in-development game "Scrolls." Here's the tweet: "Just got a letter from Bethesta's lawyers. They claim 'Scrolls' infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim." Could it be that the makers of Skyrim are a little afraid of the fact that Minecraft is scheduled for release on the same day that Skyrim hits? I would say this is highly unlikely... Bethesda's legal team has an obligation to patrol the video game world for names that might infringe on the company's trademarks, so I seriously doubt it's anything personal. Here's Notch's even-handed twitter response to the legal letter: "I still <3 Bethesda. This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers." If you'd like an inside look at lawyers being lawyers, here's the actual letter( http://twitpic.com/61ca6f ).
  2. The <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/psn/">PlayStation Network</a> continues its summer dominance this week on <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/the-drop/">The Drop</a>. Take out The Jackal when the classic <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps3/">PS3</a> title, FarCry 2 joins the digital library of games up on PSN. Followed by one demo rich with tradition and a second demo, rich with chase car experiences.*Download both demos for<a href="http://www.ea.com/madden-nfl"> Madden NFL 12</a> and <a href="http://driver-thegame.ubi.com/driver-san-francisco/en-US/">Driver: San Francisco</a> this week on PSN. 3. It's been a fun week; in case you missed it, we dropped by IGN's <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/118/1186511p1.html">Podcast Beyond #200</a>, where we shared the joy of UNCHARTED 3 multiplayer, and I extolled the virtues of Galaga Legions DX, which I've been enjoying <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/02/playstation-store-update-194/">since Tuesday</a>. My lil brother is in town from the East Coast, so it's been fun catching up on <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/castle-crashers/">Castle Crashers PSN</a>, which I had never gotten the chance to really dive into. It's fun, and filled with potty humor. Perfection. What are you playing this weekend? Next up for PlayStation (and this Blog): We'll be heading out to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cologne">Old World Europe</a> at the end of the week for <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a>. 4. It's been a fairly quiet week, all things considered, despite the rush of <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/evo/">EVO 2011 coverage</a>, a lucrative new <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/05/psnplay/">PSN PLAY</a> annual promotion, and word that <a href="http://suckerpunch.com/">Sucker Punch Productions</a> is officially <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/02/sucker-punch-productions-joins-sce-world-wide-studios/">joining</a> the SCE World Wide Studios family. I've also been hearing considerable interest in PlayStation Home's new Dead Island <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/03/coming-to-home-dead-island-zombie-survival-quiz-magic-the-gathering-game-night-new-items/">zombie survival quiz</a>. Eagle-eyed readers may have also spotted the news that <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/04/resistance-3-is-gold-bonus-content-on-the-disc/">Resistance 3 has gone gold</a>. 5. Story by Stephany Nunneley @ VG247.com. Battlefield 3 will contain 10 times the weapon unlockables as Battlefield 2, according to the latest entry to the Battleblog. These hardware unlocks will be spread over weapons, attachments, gadgets as well as a “huge unlock tree for vehicles alone.†According to Valerian Noghin and Fredrik Thylander, the game’s persistence designers, there will also be medals, ribbons and service stars displaying “skill, commitment, and teamplay prowess,†handed out to players. There are also a number ranks in the game, as with Bad Company 2, and badge ranks will show off the overall player progress in the game, and more ways to progress with “new concept of Service Stars.†Service Stars basically “challenge the hardcore†and the more one plays, the more they are eligible for further promotion by getting Service Stars added to the weapon skill badge, vehicles, kits, and overall rank. “Anytime your kill card is displayed, everyone will see exactly how experienced you are with your current equipment,†read the blog. “The ultimate bragging right would be for a player to be awarded the rank of Colonel with 100 Service Stars attached, and to have 100 stars in all weapons, kits, and vehicles. Getting there will be a massive task – consider that a challenge.†You can read the full post over on the BFblog. 6. Story by Ludwig Kietzmann @ Joystiq.com. The developers at Netherrealm Studios have been diligent in adding more characters to Mortal Kombat, releasing a free compatibility pack (to support online matches) alongside each bloody gush of new content. Creepy Elm Street loiterer Freddy Krueger calls for “Compatibility Pack #4″ when he arrives on August 9. Once downloaded, the pack grants access to “Klassic Sub-Zero” (as he appeared in Mortal Kombat 3), and “Retro Cyber Sub-Zero,” another cyborg ninja variant and a consistently effective sign that we’re talking about video games here. Freddy Krueger is available on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for $5, or as part of the Mortal Kombat Season Pass for $15. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  7. Story by Luke Plunkett @ Kotaku.com. The upcoming Modern Warfare 3 is being developed by Infinity Ward. Or, at least, what’s left of it. The Wii version, however, is being developed by somebody else, somebody just as familiar with the series, if not quite as popular with its fans. That developer is Treyarch, the team behind Call of Duty 3, World at War and Black Ops. If you’re wondering why some of their team is “stuck” on the Wii port, well, they’ve got a ton of experience on the platform, having handled the Nintendo home console versions of World at War, Modern Warfare and Black Ops, as well as having turned out 2008′s Spider-Man: Web of Shadows on the Wii. Modern Warfare 3 is due not only on Wii but PS3, 360, PC, 3DS and Vita. Most of those versions, Vita excepted, should be out in November. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  8. Hopefully you caught the news yesterday that <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/resistance-3/">Resistance 3</a> has gone gold! We also debuted our new story-centric <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/04/resistance-3-is-gold-bonus-content-on-the-disc/">campaign trailer</a>. You may also know that the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/07/28/resistance-3-public-beta-dates-early-access-starts-august-4th/">Resistance 3 Multiplayer Beta</a> early access has begun for owners of specially marked copies of SOCOM 4. We’re still very much in beta mode, with regards to fixes (especially for matchmaking to address the freezes and disconnects), so please keep <a href="http://www.insomniacgames.com/community/index.php?board=48.0">reporting</a> what you see. We hope to have a patch soon that will address many of these issues, but in the meantime, thanks for bearing with us. More...
  9. We have some exciting news for all you <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps3/">PlayStation 3</a> Worms fans out there – over the next month we have got some action-packed DLC packs for <a href="http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/worms-2-armageddon-ps3.html">Worms 2: Armageddon</a> set for release. The first DLC pack we released last year was the destructive “Battle Packâ€, which had a nice mix of worm-y goodness, and was very well received by our passionate fans. We also know that different Worms 2: Armageddon players find different features of the game appealing, and people do have their favorites. For example, some players like to spend time wracking their brains over the fiendishly-designed puzzles; others really enjoy demonstrating their ‘leet’ (their word!) heavy weapons skills in fort games, while others still prefer racing each other, or against the clock, using the ninja ropes and jet-packs. We are also aware of the fondness that many fans have for the older titles that got people addicted to the wacky world of Worms in the first place. More...

  11. I’m here today to bring the news that <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/resistance-3/">Resistance 3</a> has gone gold, and has been delivered to manufacturing for its September 6th release date. Everyone here at <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/insomniac-games/">Insomniac</a> is excited for you to get your hands on the game we’ve been working so hard on for the last three years. Even now, our work isn’t complete, as we are actively working on the Online Beta, and will be bringing a Day 1 Patch to the game to bring updates and tweaks to the final product. The public beta begins today for folks who have codes from <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/socom-4/">SOCOM 4</a>, so we’re looking forward to fragging you online. In celebration of our gold announcement, we wanted to give you the first look at a brand new gameplay trailer from Resistance 3. For those of you who have followed R3 since the announcement of the game at GamesCom last year, this trailer brings things full circle. I don’t want to spoil it, so take a look below: More...
  12. Capcom's fighting-game renaissance surges forward like an EX Hadoken. This August sees the long-awaited PSN release of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, followed by <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/marvel-vs-capcom-3">Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3</a> in November and <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/street-fighter-x-tekken/">Street Fighter X Tekken</a> in 2012. I caught up with Capcom's Strategic Director of Online & Community Seth Killian at <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/evo/">EVO</a>, the world’s biggest fighting game tournament, to get the latest updates on all three games. Killian did me one better, discussing Capcom's evolving view of community engagement and sharing his analysis of Noah "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/31/eight-year-old-noah-brings-the-pain-to-pro-players-at-evo-2011//">The Prodigy</a>," the eight-year old Marvel vs Capcom 3 competitor who captured the imagination of <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/evo/">EVO</a> attendees when he outmatched much older players to place among the competition's top 64 finalists. 15. Story by Griffin McElroy @ Joystiq.com. Activision’s been hesitant to talk about whether its upcoming soon-to-be-blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would also bust blocks on the Wii — despite the fact that the franchise’s last outing, Black Ops, appeared on the console. During today’s investor’s call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg brought said hesitation to an end, explaining, “We’re pleased to have recently confirmed that we will release a Modern Warfare 3 Wii SKU this year, so as not to leave any of the community out of the excitement.” Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  16. Story by Mike Fahey @ Kotaku.com. Nacht der Untoten. Verruckt. Shi No Numa. Der Riese. These names strike terror in the hearts of anyone that dared venture into the undead playgrounds of Call of Duty: World at War. The zombie story started there. It ends on the Moon. Due out on August 23 for the Xbox 360, the Rezurrection donwloadable content pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops combines remastered versions of those four classic zombie packs with a new one called Moon, for obvious reasons. Forget about heading to a remote island to escape the undead hordes; they’re spaceborn now, and there’s no escape. Expect high-tech weapons, bizarre new weapons, and one hell of a challenge. The five maps are packaged with an enhanced Zombies Soundtrack featuring three never-before-purchasable tracks and a special Xbox 360 Moon theme, all for the low, low price of 1,200 Microsoft points. What’s that you say? You’ve already gotten those four maps with the Hardened or Prestige editions of Black Ops? Well fine then, you get Rezurrection for free. I’m sure the PC and PlayStation 3 players will get a similar deal whenever the content comes their way. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

  20. All told, we experienced more than two hours of post-apocalyptic action, driving, and exploration in a nuke-shattered world of exquisite visual detail and startling violence. Afterwards, we spoke with id Software President Todd Hollenshead to discuss what made the legendary DOOM developer shift gears to a story-driven, open-world playground -- and to learn more about the mysteries lurking in that sprawling wasteland. <BLOCKQUOTE> Todd Hollenshead, President, id Software: “You have to sort of experience it, it’s very difficult to explain. 21. Story by: CritiKiL Dog tags have always been a part of Battlefield, acting as a personal calling card for every soldier on the field, and these little emblems will be making a return this fall in Battlefield 3. After the launch of Battlefield 1942, the development team received physical dog tags from DICE as a token of appreciation. The team was so tickled by the gesture, they made sure dog tags have been a part of the in-game experience, becoming a part of the franchise since Battlefield 2142. Your dog tag is your personal business card in Battlefield 3 – it’s what you dangle in front of an enemy you’ve taken down, and you can also collect the dog tags from your enemies as trophies, adding an extra bit of bragging rights to the festivities. “When we introduced dog tags in Battlefield 2142, we immediately knew we’d turned the knife duel into something new and very personal,†says Alan Kertz, Senior Multiplayer Designer at DICE. “Now players could have a record of their humiliation takedowns, and players were striving to protect their neck.†With that in mind, DICE wanted to make sure dog tags in Battlefield 3 were even more personal, bringing an extra weight to them. You’ll be able to choose a design that goes with an in-game stat that gets tracked dynamically. “Dog tags in Battlefield 3 go beyond just having your name on them,†explains Kertz. “We have hundreds of dog tags that can be your personal calling card. Every time you kill an enemy, they see your tags. It’s your calling card – it’s your place to brag, and dynamic tags can show off how great you are with a knife, a jet, or even show off your personal play style.†The only way to get a dog tag from your adversary is by performing one of the new, brutal knife takedowns. That not all – you’ll have to take out your target from behind. That’s right – you’ll have to employ some stealth and sneak up on your enemy and put them out of their misery before they realize you were even there, making for some well-deserved bragging rights. Now that these dog tags are highly customized for your own play style, it helps make things that much more personal, so the only way to gain one is to get the jump on your opponent. Yes, these dog tags may demand a bit more than usual to collect them, but that just makes it a greater insult when you take one from your foe. These knife kills look amazing and provide a great new way to prove your prowess on the Battlefield, and thanks to the new ANT animation system, these takedowns add a dynamic visual flair. “ANT technology allows us to make the knife takedown a truly immersive part of the physical Battlefield,†Kertz adds. “Takedowns encourage players to get in there for stealth kills, and makes bringing a knife to a gun fight the risky but rewarding experience it was always meant to be.†Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  22. Story by Adam Rosenberg @ G4TV.com. EA Sports announced the launch of Season Ticket, a new subscription service that offers well-rounded sports-loving gamers a range of benefits, in a press release this morning. For a yearly rate of $24.99 / 2000 MS Points, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users get early access to releases in the NFL, NHL, FIFA, Tiger Woods and NCAA Football franchises, as well as discounts and specialized web content. The early game access advantage is the main draw here, but there’s a pretty significant catch that you should be aware of. Starting three days before a game’s release, players will be able to download a digital version onto their console of choice. Here’s the thing though: That download expires after the three days are up and the game arrives in retail locations. I’m sure none of us were really expecting EA to give away five full yearly releases plus the other bonuses for less than $30 per year. The digital download expiration is simply an unexpected way of ensuring a fair deal for both sides, especially with any unlocked content (Achievements/Trophies, game saves, etc.) carries over into the retail version of the game, should you purchase it. If you run out once a year to buy Madden NFL and nothing more, this might not be the program for you. Sports fans with more varied tastes will want to consider it though. Members also get a 20 percent discount on all downloadable content released for participating EA Sports titles as well as access to premium web content. The first items to be offered are Creation Center packs for FIFA Soccer 12 which “provide a deeper set of customization tools and abilities within Creation Center to build your own teams and tournaments.” Finally, all members receive a membership badge, both a physical version and an EASPORTS.com profile-connected digital version. Sadly, no decoder ring to go along with it. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
  23. Story by Ben Gilbert @ Joystiq.com. Like buying games brand new? EA sure wants you to, as its “Limited Edition” of Need for Speed: The Run incentivizes just such a purchase with the bonus inclusion of three fancy sports cars — for the same price as the regular ol’ “normal” edition, no less. Along with special access to a Porsche 911 Carrera S, a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and a Lamborghini Aventador, picking up the “Limited Edition” nets you “five exclusive Challenges” to slay with your high-powered sports car of choice. The only version of the Limited Edition that we can spot thus far is on EA’s own Origin PC download store for the totally-normal-edition price of $49.99, so it stands to reason that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are similarly priced ($59.99 on consoles). Just to be sure, we’ve asked EA for a better idea of what to expect, price-wise, come November. Update: EA clarified that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will cost the standard $59.99, and the “Limited Edition” will operate similarly to the “Limited Edition” version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
