  5. The Central Plaza of Sony’s PlayStation 3 virtual playground PlayStation Home has never looked quite as attractive as it will this Thursday. To think all it needed was an alien invasion. Killzone 3 is coming on February 22, but the Helghast are touching down in PlayStation Home a little bit earlier than that. Starting Thursday, January 27, PlayStation Home users will be able to fight to secure the Central Plaza, transformed into the ISA’s last stronghold against the Helghast assault. They’ll do so by playing Central Plaza Defender, a first-person shooter in which players shoot down Helghast airships, take out their ground forces, and deliver supplies in order to earn points good towards unlocking items in Killzone 3 multiplayer. Fans will even be able to preorder the game from Amazon via a PlayStation Home kiosk, scoring an exclusive jetpack for their Home avatar in the process. This right here is the proper way to use PlayStation Home for marketing. Burn it down! Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops isn’t just getting four new maps when First Strike hits the Xbox 360 next month, it’s also getting more zombies. While we have already seen a bit of the four multiplayer maps included in First Strike, due to hit the Xbox 360 on Feb. 1 for 1,200 Microsoft points, or about $15, all we know on the zombie front was that another map was coming. In this latest video we get another quick look at Kowloon, Discovery, Berlin Wall and Stadium, as well as our first look at Ascension, a new map for those of you who love the cooperative play of Black Ops’ zombie mode. Flying platforms, stadium lighting, giant space rockets: This looks like the sort of place I’d love to kill zombies in. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may have influenced the deadly attack on Russia’s busiest airport earlier this week, state run news network Russia Today suggests. RT points out what they say are similarities between the bloody scenes depicted in the No Russian level of 2009′s game with the gruesome reality of yesterday’s attack at Domodedovo International Airport. Thirty-five people were killed and more than 180 injured in the terrorist attack that Russian officials say was a suicide bombing. In the report, RT points out that the American made video game has earned more than $1 billion in sales worldwide and than you don’t have to own the game to see the No Russian mission, you can also watch it on YouTube. Walid Phares, Director of Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, tells the news channel that terrorists may even use the game for training. “Indeed it is a trouble to look at the game and reality,” he said. “The issue is we need to know if terrorists or extremists are using these videos or DVDs or games to basically apply the model. “I think those who have been radicalized already – that is supposed in this case jihadists, Al-Qaeda or other kind – they look at the games and say these games will serve them to train,” Media critic Danny Schechter adds that some video games can influence people. In the No Russian level, players take on the role of Joseph Allen, who has infiltrated a terrorist group as Alexei Borodin. Borodin and the terrorist group he has infiltrated enter the Zakhaev International Airport and begin to gun down civilians. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

  10. Have you heard? Killzone 3 has been gold for a week now, and an open beta has been announced which will feature some of the best aspects of this savage title. In addition to this jaw-crumbling announcement, all eight multiplayer maps have been revealed, and they look perfect breeding grounds for destruction. You can see a small concept art image for each of these levels, as well as its feature set on the official site, but we’ll go ahead and introduce you to the basics information of each map below. You can see the name of each multiplayer map in Killzone 3 below, as well as a brief description of the map. Corinth Highway Once the home of Scolar Visari himself, this upscale district on the banks of the Corinth River is now the site of intense fighting between the Helghast and the ISA. Though largely untouched by the nuclear blast that destroyed much of Pyrrhus city, the partially collapsed highway stands as testament to the intense fighting that has ravaged the area in recent months. WASP rocket emplacements and capturable Mortar Beacons will help even the odds against the exoskeletons that dominate the highway. Pyrrhus Crater In the ruins of Pyrrhus, nuclear Petrusite flows from the blast crater, twisting itself around the mangled remains of this once bustling city. The ISA have established research stations to analyze the Petrusite, and the Helghast have already started to harvest the Petrusite in order to weaponize it. Bilgarsk Boulevard After weeks of fighting, ISA and Helghast forces are deadlocked. Recent flooding has forced both sides to take shelter in buildings bordering a major thoroughfare. Pitched battles roll through the tight alleyways and building interiors daily but the long sightlines make crossing the road a dangerous proposition. Who will break the stalemate? Turbine Concourse In a last, desperate attempt to escape Helghan, the ISA have launched an assault on the ‘Tharsis’ space elevator. Jetpacks and Minigun emplacements will give an upper hand to anyone that can secure them. Recent fighting has damaged the turbine powering the elevator, causing a malfunction that produces intermittent EMP discharges. A nearby blast crater serves as a valuable source of nuclear Petrusite but the Helghast will not hesitate to sabotage if it means stopping the ISA. Frozen Dam Abandoned for years, the dam facility in the frozen south has recently been occupied by the Helghast who are using it as a forward operating base to co-ordinate their presence in the region. Controlling Mortar Beacons and the numerous Tactical Spawn Areas is key to securing this sprawling facility. Akmir Snowdrift Helghan is a planet of extremes and nowhere is that more evident than here, in the frozen wastes. Violent snowstorms are common in the area, which has recently become a flashpoint of fighting between Helghast and ISA forces vying for control of the mining and radar operations in the area. Mawlr Graveyard One of the few remaining active scrap yards in the region, the Sukmere Pit is a vital processing facility. An intricate conveyor system runs throughout the yard, transferring detritus from the southern-most pit to the train station and crusher in the north of the facility. Many a careless worker has died trying to cross the yard when the crusher is active. Kaznan Jungle Amidst the wreckage of a downed ISA Cruiser, the survivors of the failed evacuation of Helghan fight for their lives against a Helghast enemy bent on their annihilation but they are not the only predators in the area; the jungle, the plants and insects that call it home are friend to no-one. Killzone 3 will be marching to stores on February 22nd, but you can try out this monstrous title in the open beta on February 3rd. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  11. Creators of the EverQuest series, Sony Online Entertainment are known for developing quality MMOs that are not only critical successes, but also commercial ones. But the success of SOE’s previous titles seems to pale in comparison to DC Universe Online, which is now their “fastest selling game ever”. John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment, announced on his twitter that even though the game had stock shortages it was smashing all their previous records: Working on out-of-stock problems for DCUO. It’s ou[r] fastest selling game ever. Should have more inventory in Monday. 12. DC Universe Online servers were down for maintenance today and when they came back up players were treated to Patch 1.03. 13. All downloadable content for the America-under-siege title Homefront will come to the Xbox 360 first, similar to extensions for other major titles in the past. Homefront’s developer said the PS3 missed out because, well, Sony’s not interested. “Sony really didn’t come to us and say, ‘We want to support you and get behind you.’” Kaos’ Rex Dickson told Eurogamer. “I think their focus right now is on Killzone. So that’s really how it all happened.” Killzone’s multiplayer beta begins Feb. 2 and ends Feb. 14, and it won’t be coming to the Xbox 360, so there. Of course, the whole game isn’t, either. In the remainder of the interview Dickson said Kaos was gunning for a “subtle approach to the oppression,” of the occupied United States, then goes on to say we might be watching parents get killed in front of their kids. “When we first introduced that idea, a lot of the developers weren’t comfortable with it – they have families when they go home, they have kids – and were just like, ‘Why are we putting this in the game? I don’t like this,’” Dickson said. “But we’re going for something where we’re trying to make the player feel an emotion here.” Dickson said the execution scene doesn’t feature gore or graphic violence. It’s done off camera. “It’s all audio and animation.” Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  14. David Vonderhaar, oft referred to simply as Vahn, posted an update on Call of Duty’s official message board yesterday, pertaining to the status of Title Update 1.06. From what we’ve been able to gather, so far, Title Update 1.06 is going to be a pretty large patch for Black Ops. While we haven’t read of any new features being added to the game, we have learned that there are a ton of bug fixes and gameplay tweaks being applied. Referring back to Josh Olin’s post on Call of Duty’s message board about the patching process, we are at Phase 3 in the process of pushing out an update. Phase 3 is where the 1st parties, namely Microsoft and Sony, have a look at the update and determine whether they feel it is ready to be released on their platforms. If they do believe it is ready, than we are very close to seeing Title Update 1.06 on our consoles. The process of getting the patch approved by the 1st parties is usually about 1 week. PlayStation 3-Specific Issues Title Update 1.06 addresses a ton of issues on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 but there are certainly a good number of PlayStation 3-specific bugs and connectivity issues which are getting some extra attention from the folks at Treyarch. Many PlayStation users are voicing complaints over their experience playing Black Ops over Sony’s PlayStation Network and Treyarch is working around the clock to address these issues and push out fixes. 1.06 will bring a fix for a common PlayStation hard freeze (system crash), it will improve the connectivity and reliability of connection between players on PlayStation Network and it will fix a specific issue in which parties are being split up when attempting to join matches together. These are only a few of the PlayStation-specific issues address, but should be a welcome update for the PlayStation users voicing their troubles. Gameplay Tweaks The following gameplay tuning has been applied to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Black Ops and are not console-specific updates. Notes courtesy of Vahn’s post on Call of Duty’s message board. Second Chance gets a scoring overhaul. If you shoot the guy and he falls into Second Chance you will get the +100 (in TDM) and kill credit. You don’t get this if the guy is revived. You get it if: (1) you finish him off (2) he takes Coward’s Way Out (3) he “times out” and dies anyhow or (4) a teammate finishes him off. If a player is already in Second Chance and you finish him off, you get an Assist and the appropriate credit. RC-XD The RC-XD has had its top speed and maximum damage reduced. Not much, mind you. Flak Jacket users will survive an RC-XD attack way better than someone without Flak Jacket. However, it won’t make you completely immune. The AK74u also gets some minor tweaks. It’s unclear at this time just exactly how they are altering the AK74u, but we assume it will be increasing or adjusting the amount of recoil when using the Grip attachment. Vahn’s most recent update can be found below or at the source link at the bottom of this article. So, what are your guys’ thoughts on 1.06? It sure seems to be a big patch, addressing most if not all of the primary concerns that players have been having. Are you looking forward to this patch hitting your console? 15. It’s Friday and it is a good news day!* Between the 3rd and the 15th of February, you will be able to download and play the Killzone 3 Open Beta from the PlayStation Store. This Beta will offer you exclusive early access to the MP05 ‘Frozen Dam’ multiplayer level from Killzone 3, including all three online multiplayer modes – Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations – as well as the offline multiplayer mode, Botzone. A sprawling asymmetrical map set in an old dam facility, the playing field in MP05 has been carefully tailored to fit each of the multiplayer modes. These are the four multiplayer modes included with the Open Beta: be available in the final game: Guerrilla Warfare (16 players) Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out. In this mode, only the downstream monitor houses and repair bay are accessible, giving the map a very frantic pace. Warzone (24 players) If you’ve played Killzone 2, you may already be familiar with Warzone. It’s a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. In this mode the power house and penstocks directly under the dam are accessible as well, so there’s more room to come up with different strategies and approaches to your goal. Operations (16 players) Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3’s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions, in which the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility. Botzone (16 players) Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents. For details of all the multiplayer maps in Killzone 3, see our map feature here. 18. Duke Nukem Forever has a launch date. May 3. And now you all can finally see the trailer — just with some of the breasts pixelated. Plus, it’s got a Duke Xbox controller, sorta. Duke Nukem Forever, which is now being made by Gearbox Software, has been in development for upwards of a decade. (There’s more to that story, of course.) It’s being brought across the finish line by Gearbox and a team of creators who had worked on the long-awaited first-person shooter at 3D Realms. This trailer had been shown at the Penny Arcade Expo in September, when the game made its playable debut. But the word was, at the time, that it was way too extreme to be shown to the public. You can probably figure out why. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...
  19. According to a new report from the LA Times, Activision has already started production on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with Sledgehammer assigned to help with the development. At least this is what people familiar with the situation are saying. Modern Warfare 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed by Activison yet, but if these reports are correct we could be looking at a release in November; judging from previous release dates in the franchise. Infinity Ward aren’t out, they’ll be working closely with Sledgehammer as the two studios are equally sharing duties on the production of the single-player aspect of the game. Raven Software are said to be working on the multiplayer portion. Source: LA Times Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

  21. “It’s in total shambles and unplayable.” That’s how one Joystiq reader describes Modern Warfare 2 on PSN. With PS3 system security in disarray, hackers and cheaters have run rampant on Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty games. Players unwittingly placed into a hacked server can meet the unfortunate consequence of losing all their stats and, unfortunately, it doesn’t appear a fix is in sight. “Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on,” Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling explained on the game’s official forums. “Unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform … updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem,” he admits, adding, “at this time, we do not have the ability to restore or adjust individual stats.” Although Bowling adds that “we are looking at every option available to us to help any user affected,” it appears the situation is quite dire, especially when one considers the workarounds Bowling suggests. You can submit a PSN grief report, play exclusively with friends via private matches, or play Black Ops, which does “not rely solely on platform security” — something Infinity Ward promises to learn from in future games.
