vbulletin or SMF or anything else?

Why do you guys pick the forums you have? I liked SMF till I read and found out about VBulletin and all the mods you can do on it. Now using it for our clan forums - http://www.divineknightsclan.com I got to say I LOVE IT. Which one would you chose? and why?

SMF.. it has a great IP tracker, RSS built in to most themes and its pretty common so users are comfortable w/ it. I used to be a phpBB fan.. but then i got hacked! ... well not really but sort of, and so i opted for a new set up.. SMF seemed to be the ticket.. and although its been a few years since i used or looked into anything else.. i can say i love it!

I'd say go with SMF. The vBulletin has the ability to add mods but it's over kill for what this community usually expects of a forum.

Definitely SMF. The community and support is huge. VBulletin you have to pay for everything. SMF is a wonderful forum.

SMF by far. The scripting is different. Easier to embed pics. And what these other guys have been saying.

LOL. You really don't have to pay for everything. Once you get a life time membership its over. I mean if you spend a lot of money on websites its not much more for forums you know what I mean? I loved SMF till VBULLetin the newest one which we have has everything. IP tracker all the stuff you guys talked about. I think it has better security then SMF.

Yes you do, that is if you want their support.

SMF does all that for free, all the time, for the life of your forum. Vbulletin has themes and mods you can buy. SMF has thousands of each that are free.

I dont know. I paid the lifetime membership. Read everything you can think of about the differences and made my descion. It does feel good to be the only clan in UF to have it. Makes us unique. Hehe

We used vB before making the switch to what we have now- I think both are good to go... Its kinda like asking which playmate you like the best, the blond or the brunette- Its ALL good.

Every time i search for skins, 90% of the sites only have vB skins.

I bet if you type in "forum skins" on any search engine you get 5 times as many for vB.!!

You just can't compare vb and smf. vb is not free... smf is... you usualy get what you pay for and vb is far advanced because you pay for it and have members constantly being payed to work on it. SMF has been the same for a long time now.

be careful with all of those skins and themes most of them are full of errors.

you can usually check them with a link at the bottom of the page.

sometimes these errors are very minor, sometimes they will creep up on you after you have already moved into you forum and gotten all comfortable.

First thing first. vB is 10x better then a free site! The features alone in the admin panel does not compare to any other forum! I'd pay 180.00 ever year if I had to thats how much i like it. i own 2 license!

 

Cough Cough don't you mean phillyfan has done most of your work on your site? Upgraded you,arcades with over 1,000 games I download (still have 3,000 more games to go lol,casinos and your most recent skin and alot of other mods LOL.. Love ya Chili!!

I'd like to see those differences, really. I'm not arguing because I only messed with VB for about a week and found it very cumbersome compared to most other forums. Rage knows, he got me to use SMF over PHPBB forums and I don't like the SMF ones. Too cumbersome and not enough mods and skins IMO. PHPBB is so much more simple and easy to work with IMO. Rage does have some good connects though.

I'm assuming the ones who are talking about mods and the lack of over at SMF, just don't know where to look. SMF has their own customization site full of free mods and themes .... I'm interested to see what VB has that SMF does not.
