  1. Did anyone else catch the PlayStation press conference from GDC that just ended? The event focused on the PlayStation motion controller, called PlayStation Move, and included SOCOM 4. Sony is taking the stance that Move is precise enough to be used in true hardcore games, with the same latency as the DualShock (1 frame). Aside from SOCOM 4 looking like Gears of War, what did people think of the scheme? Oh, and motion control is in addition to DualShock control - use old guys can still shoot it up old school.
  2. Just fire up the beta like before. It will start installing all the stuff you need. Set some time aside. Mine has slowed to a crawl now that people are getting home from work/school.
  3. It is also taking me a bit longer. I'm at 40% after 35 minutes. With all this download traffic, should be a good test of the game servers once we get there!
  4. The last one was massive too. I managed to get that one at a rate of about 1 MB /sec and it took about 40 min. Is the new version going that fast?
  5. That is the same Reef Club judging by the pictures I found. I did come across a press release from 2007 that mentioned they had been added to the Wyndham family of hotels. As far as "day passes," I couldn't find anything on their website either. If you're thinking about it, I would shoot them an email (either guest services or maybe even the group manager) to see if they would offer you something even if they don't normally do that anymore. A group of ten might catch their attention. With a large group it is nice to have things planned out before you go, but the best source of information is going to be the staff on the ship. They know where to go to "get away from it all," and have a good time. Don't bother with your room steward or waiter - they work all the time - ask they people that run the activities on board. The "cruise staff" are usually good as you see them at all the events and they are easy to socialize with, but the best source of info is often the Casino Dealers as the casino is closed in ports.
  6. Years ago (back in 2000-2001), I worked for Celebrity Cruises and used to port in Cozumel every other week for 26 weeks. They've changed the town a lot since I was working there, and some ships now actually get to port at a downtown pier. We used to port at a terminal outside of downtown, about a 5 min cab ride (or a decent walk) to the south of downtown. We (the staff from the ship) used to go to place called The Reef Club. Since we ported at the terminal that wasn't downtown, it was in the opposite direction that all the guests were traveling. They used to have a daily rate for visitors, and better a deal for us on the ships ($10 a day, all-inclusive). It was also rarely busy, even though we were going during November to May. Now, with all that being said, I don't even know if it is still in business, or if they still offer a day rate. It wasn't that far away, but was a decent cab ride. I assume that you're going to have people to split the ride with? It's far enough away that you should arrange a time to be picked up by your driver when he's dropping you off. Anyways, have a good time. Oh, and if you port downtown, have a drink at Carlos & Charlie's before you get back on board. You may not be looking for a party, but this place is a lot of fun, even in the middle of the afternoon.
  7. Being Canadian, Blue used to be my beer of choice when I was working for Celebrity Cruises. It was the only Canadian beer we carried, and it was one I liked before I boarded the ships, so it was like a little piece of home. It always cracked me up that it was classified as an import beer, and even had a little maple leaf and "Imported" on the neck label. Of course we just drank what ever was cold, because for staff on the ships, bottles were a $1.00 and cans were $0.70. Amstel, Heineken, Corona, Coors Light, Blue - it usually just depended on which one I pulled out of the fridge. As long as it wasn't a Bud can, things were gravy! For my home consumption, I usually end up purchasing Moosehead. At a restaurant or bar though, it is what every strikes my fancy.
  8. Some of our guys reported having to put it in a specific USB port. Despite the PS3 having more USB slots, the PS2 only used 2. It's kinda like the PS3 not supporting Blue-tooth mics on PS2 games.
  9. Good luck to everyone in their play-off matches tonight.
  10. It does this on every map. I haven't grabbed the pack yet, but on Summit Demo today it also happened to us. Look for a patch for the patch! You'd think their Q & A guys would have picked up this one!

    2 Word Game

    (all dwarves)
  12. I'm excited about it, but have one reservation - I don't think it will be the same without 47's voice. Like if they ever finish that Splinter Cell movie, it will be weird to have Sam Fisher not sound like Michael Ironside. I wonder why they didn't get David Bateson to bring the role to the screen? He has been the voice of 47 since the beginning, and is also an actor. I thought maybe he was "too old" for the role, but get this - he turned 47 this year. Nothing against Timothy Olyphant, but I just don't think it's going have that familar feel.
  13. Congratulations to the new staff, and congratulations and good luck to UF on their new and continued endevours.
  14. Not only is this kid's embarrassment funny, if I were Tow, I would be rolling on the floor right now with the stunt he just pulled on all of us: I would have thought we all had better things to do than scrutinize a picture for "traces" of some dude's junk. :-[ LOL
  15. The home team is listed first (on the left).
  16. We're stocked with a few Canadians so we're good to go either way.
  17. hand selected 10,000 testers? im sure that didnt take any time .... That was the part that broke it for me. Also, it will be interesting to see how SCEA handles all the orders from retailers, given the 29-day announcement to shipping window...
  18. I guess saving it is a neat feature, but I'd rather be using that RAM and processing power to run the game. Seems like a waste of resources to me. Imagine how kick-ass Halo 3 could have been if the engine wasn't handicapped by the "save film" system requirements.

    DS or PSP

Last Friday we got a bunch of "PSP Daxter Packs": "Ice Silver" PSP Slim "Daxter" game "Family Guy: Freakin' Sweet Collection" UMD 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo They're selling them for $229.99 up here in Canada, so I imagine the US retail price would be $199.99. If I didn't have a PSP already, I would probably snatch this up.

    DS or PSP

To encode video files for the PSP I use PSP Video 9 as well. There is a little bit of trial an error involved because it isn't very well documented, but once you've got it figured out, it kicks ass. It only encodes existing media files, so if you want to encode a movie you have on DVD you'll have to rip it first (I use DVD Decrypter). My understanding is that the "new" PSPs simply have some design changes (similar to how Sony made a "fat" PS2 and a "slim" one). Here is the article from IGN.

    DS or PSP

I've got a PSP. I play games on it, I watch movies/tv on it, and I use it to surf the web when I don't have a computer handy. I'm a big fan of putting movies/tv shows on my PSP. It takes some time to encode things, but I can fit roughly 10 half-hour tv shows (roughly 23 min runtime each) on a 1GB Memory Stick. The quality settings I use are pretty good, so you could fit more if you don't mind scrimping more on sound/framerate. The battery lasts pretty long if your running stuff off a Memory Stick, and still decent if accessing stuff from a UMD or using the Wi-Fi. Also, look into the "Location Free Player" which allows you to access your own home content (TV, computer, etc) over the internet. Like every system there are good games, and there are bad games. The PSP has some software that rivals true PS2 consoles games. I've really gotten into Killzone: Liberation (despite being frustratingly hard) and recently Metal Gear: Portable Ops. There are plenty of titles now, and usually can be found for a decent price ($30 CDN). The battery does die quicker when playing games, especially if the PSP is accessing the UMD a lot, and sometimes my fingers feel cramped from the control schemes of some games. Also, some games allow "game sharing" which essentially allows you to get a demo from your buddy so you can play. It's only good until you turn off your PSP (or exit to the cross media bar), but can allow you to play some games (like Bomberman!!) head to head (up to 4 people) via ad-hoc networking off of one UMD. Browsing the net is okay. The "keyboard" is a bit of a pain, but to check email or look something up it works pretty good. I don't use it to send email or post on message boards though because it can be tedious, but then again I don't text much on my phone either. The price has come way down on PSPs since I got mine, and they can do a heck of a lot. I'm not really into it, but some of my more tech-savvy clanmates also run "homebrew" applications on their PSPs. They can pretty much do whatever they want with it, running all kinds of unofficial software. This isn't very coherrent, but I do like my PSP and use it a lot. I don't even have music or photos on it, but it can hold those as well, and there are some neat add-ons that are out in Japan that we don't have yet (like a GPS transponder).
  22. I have to admit I almost turned it off. I'm glad I didn't after about the 3 min mark.
  23. Uh... Chili, the party is in a different thread, and uh.. I um... guess you are.... um. not invited. ;D
