  9. Cubs Non-Tender Prior. By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com CHICAGO -- The Cubs and Mark Prior have parted ways. The Cubs opted to not tender a contract to the right-handed pitcher by Wednesday's 11 p.m. CT deadline, and he is now a free agent. The Cubs would've preferred to non-tender Prior and re-sign him for less than last season's $3.575 million and include a club option for 2009. Negotiations on a possible 2008 deal for the arbitration-eligible pitcher were unsuccessful, and the one-time All-Star who won 18 games in 2003 is now looking for a new team. Prior has compiled a 42-29 record and 3.51 ERA since he made his big league debut in 2002, but his career has been interrupted by injuries. Last season, Prior was unable to pitch in either the Major Leagues or the Minor Leagues because of his shoulder. Prior did appear in four Cactus League games in March, and gave up 14 hits and nine walks over 10 1/3 innings. The team decided he needed more time, and he was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on March 28. Prior maintained his sense of humor about the demotion. "I'll go down and help that team win, and try to make the Triple-A All-Star team and maybe I'll get invited to the Futures Game or something," he said. The right-hander never reported. He ended an outing in extended Spring Training early, and eventually needed arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in April. The procedure, done by Dr. James Andrews, included a debridement of his right rotator cuff as well as repairing the labral and capsular injuries. Prior started his throwing program in mid-September. "The goal is, obviously, to come back," Prior said on Sept. 21 during a visit to Wrigley Field. "I expect to come back. This day and age playing, we're fortunate to have medicine and technology that gives us a second chance." His agent, John Boggs, said Andrews expects Prior to be ready for the Major Leagues in mid- to late May, but told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday that "if you want to be conservative, tack a few months onto that." That means Prior may not be ready until the All-Star break, and that's the risk the Cubs didn't want to take. Carrie Muskat is a reporter for MLB.com.
  10. I've thought long & hard (insert Undertow joke here...) about this whole steroids things. In fact, I've been thinking about it since my days of High School Gridiron Glory. I was 17, 6 ' 5" 285lbs, and could bench around 375lbs. I was pretty quick as big guys go, and had a really good understanding of the game. I idolized guys like Howie Long, Mark Gastineau, Randy White, and a maniac they called Lyle Alzado (Alzado was the first Major sports figure that admitted that he had used steroids). Truth is, I did understand the pressure you feel to be stronger, faster, etc., but never even considered enhancing my work outs with steroids or other supplements ( the safe word we use today ). Alzado died in 92', and his steroid use, was actually bigger news than his actual career. The point I'm trying to make here is steroid abuse, and it's many forms, is not something new. We now know, and have known for sometime now, what affect they have on the human body, we know that they can kill or cripple you physically, or affect your sex drive, or cause impotence in men, etc. And after the grisly Chris Benoit murder/suicide, our eyes were opened to the reality of "Roid Rage". So, just like most of the problems our civilization faces, we try to blame someone, instead of trying to solve the actual problem. Who do we blame for the steroid problem we see in the sports world? The Coaches, Commissioners, Trainers, Agents, Athletes, Owners, who? And why is it that the Athletes are usually the only ones who are indicted in the public eye? There used to be a time when we the fans would cheer for a team, or for a player who just gave everything they had, every play. But, then came the age of Multi Million Dollar contracts that were based on Numbers (HRs, TDs, etc.), and that's when it all changed. We as Fans stopped caring about hustle and heart, and fell in love with HRs & violent, bone rattling, hits. Everybody reading this knows who Ray Lewis is, but only a handful would recognize a name like Bill Bates (they don't make 'em like him anymore). We know who Barry Bonds is, but few would know or care who "Buck" O'Neil is. So, I blame the fans, all of us, for wanting more. For losing focus of the size of one's heart, as opposed to the size of one's biceps. We've created a beast called Pro Sports, and now must feed it with dollars, and since we're paying $50 a ticket, the local hero better score a touchdown, or go yard, or whatever. Yeah, we'll drag some names through the proverbial mud after Thursday's revelation, but we must, at the very least, throw ourselves into the mud hole as well. Here's to making it a game again....
