Red0ctobeR Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Undertow ] Medux ]and the generations have competley changed from 20 yrs ago to now so i dont think u can compare to back then. The amount of stuff that we have to play with/ or use (ipods, playstations ) kool stuff liek that..they didnt have really ANY of that stuff back then..so they didnt really have much of a choice to go out..i gurantee if u guys had it back then u would of been siting indoors Listen "kid," (and I mean that literally, but jokingly) We DID have stuff like that back in the day. PONG was actually something installed into old television sets with DIALS on it and you could play it without the use of a console. We didn't have iPods, but we had walkmans and Discmans, and back then, those were pretty "advanced" for the day and age. And we STILL went outside.....LOL. Not just indoors. I don't think you're qualified to put much input into the yesteryear side of the conversation here, Medux, unless you're just giving us the one-sided generational viewpoint...which is a little short-sighted for the overall "through the ages" conversation going on here, how technology of TODAY is crippling the dynamics of YESTERDAY'S family for TOMORROW. And just so everyone knows, we will be embracing Home. As Hippie said, we WILL have a UF-HQ that will hold the meetings online and everything, and we're looking forward to that. The main focus of this, though, is how the people IN GENERAL (that means not YOU, not ME, not HIM, but the general, overall populace) will (and HAVE) be affected by technology essentially REPLACING our d-e-s-i-r-e to communicate with one another on a very personal, integral level. OR, I could simply type that as: IMO, ur not gonna remember how 2 properly comm like normal ppl should. Dude I remember when CD's first came out. It only takes them farther from reality. How about Thugs/Gangsters.. Just get a job, & treat people better. quit shooting, robbing & hurting innocent or even guilty people for that matter. Lawyers.. Quit lying to protect the guilty, amoung other things ..lol Contractors.. Dont charge people for something they dont need.! Car Salesman.. Just sell the car for what people can afford, & of course what the car is worth. ;D Politicians.. please dont get me started.. just do your job .lol Etc, etc.. I know that there are some decent young 'uns out there but they are certainly NOT the norm, from my experience. What's even scarier, kids these days aren't afraid of anything or anyone. When I was growing up, we didn't act stupid because even if my parents weren't around to catch me, my friends parents might be and that was just as bad. And the lack of respect is mind boggling! Even something so simple as saying yes ma'am/sir and no ma'am/sir is just unheard of. I'm doing my part though, trying to raise my children the way I was raised. My 5 1/2 year old DEFINITELY uses his yes/no ma'ams/sirs! And everytime he says that, I am so proud of him for being such a respectful little man! Quote

[<+>] mic-- Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I don't think it's a big deal. Who's to say what you or I should do in our free time. As long as you are contributing to society (taxes, crime-free, etc...) in some way, i dont care what you spend your money on or how you choose to run your social life. If someone wants to buy stuff for their virtual world, then let them do it. I would never buy a tv for my ps3 house, but if someone else wants to then that's their decision. As for kids, it's the parents job to govern what goes on in their house. Telephone, tv, cell phone, computers/internet, video games... Those products have brought up the same discussion. The list will continue to grow and the same debate will continue... Quote

If someone wants to buy stuff for their virtual world, then let them do it. I would never buy a tv for my ps3 house, but if someone else wants to then that's their decision. I'm not pointing you out individually here, Nomic....but what's typed above IS sort of what we're talking about here in a roundabout way. The fact that people/society in GENERAL "don't care" what you do with your life or whatever....as long as it ain't hurtin' them. But there is a divisive line where we respect people's privacy AND where we try and produce an outlook that has the FUTURE in our best interests. People today think they won't be here forever, and they're right, and perhaps that's a contributing factor to why people don't care too much nowadays on how what we do and what we don't do SHAPE our future generations. I do not know how I will be remembered after I die. It's something I think about all the time. It's why I instruct at a college level instead of a lower one, because I would like to have a better impact on someone's outlook and values. It's why I write comics and books, because they'll be around after I die. But still, I do not know how or if I will be remembered, or how I will be remembered as. What I WOULD like to be involved in, however, is in the general judgment that at the END of it all.....ALL of it.....the human race was a good one. That we ended on a good note. Not that we started out great and then self-discovered ourselves and our technological potential to the point where we did not know ANYONE or could not communicate with ANYONE at the time of our final demise. BIGDANIEL Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 So as a mid 30's husband and father here's my 2 cents worth: We now live in a society where we MUST use products to get the value of our dollar. We are the ones to blame for this. Laziness is the biggest driving force behind the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Every convenience we have today is because someone wondered what could be done to make it easier. See, being too smart and too innovative can be a bad thing as well. Maybe you've heard the saying, "To smart for your own good"? You cant have good with out bad. No one took the time to think about what bad could come from the goods that have been created. plus the generations have drastically changed..even the way we talk 2 our elders That my friend is the fault of your parents and parents like them. Parents who allow their kids to function everyday with no repsect for themselves or others are parents who either A) told themselves that when they had kids they weren't going to be as hard on their kids as their parents were on them (we remember those days right); were products of the generation hit by the mass divorce epidemic and so grew up without one or both of their parents so they have nothing to draw on, nothing to refer to when it comes to being a good parent; or C) fall into that category of people who should have never been aloud to reproduce in the first place subsequently producing offspring who are wards of the state either in the criminal juvenile system, the foster care system, or both. Leaving them to be taken care of by you and I along with our own families. I know that there are some decent young 'uns out there but they are certainly NOT the norm, from my experience. The majority is dangerously close to shifting to the other side. It wont be long. The cycle will repeat itself and when it does the majority being the decent will become the minority. Social decay seems to be inevitable. Unless we do something now. And in the end....and this is just disappointing.....it's just because some people just don't know any better. They don't know any better because their parents failed to teach them. As stated and eluded to so many times before in this thread many parents of this generation of kids have turned to TV's, Video Games, Portable Video Games, Cell Phones, etc to quite their kids. Like giving a crying baby its pacifier so you can get that extra few minutes of sleep instead of dealing with the issue at hand when it presents itself. They have no clue what it takes to be a parent. And ironically enough, its mentioned earlier on this thread too, there is so much information available today online. How hard is it to look up articles and information on how to be a good parent? Any idiot can help produce a baby. It takes a true mature person to be a parent. Our job as parents is to put forth intelligent productive men and women into our society. Ones who will help lead us in any way they can by drawing on their experiences and lessons taught by us the parents. Some parents are just disconnected when it comes to knowing what they are supposed to be doing. Who's to say what you or I should do in our free time. As long as you are contributing to society (taxes, crime-free, etc...) in some way, i don't care what you spend your money on or how you choose to run your social life. Contributing is relative. And what you spend your money on is your business. But keep in mind that money is what keeps this country functioning and a world power. Some might even say MONEY = POWER. If your money looses its value then its looses its power. If things keep going the way they are the Dollar wont be worth anything valuable enough to help the USA stay a world power. Are we close to becoming a 2nd world nation? Who knows? Not many will notice anyway. Unless of course the information were to be broadcast over the internet, text messaged, posted in some online store, written on the load up screen of a video game, or printed on our virtual newspapers delivered to our virtual homes in our virtual worlds. In the end it will always come down to less talk and more action. Quote
AuDaCiOu5 Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I agree it all starts with how the parents are raising there kids. I have a 9 and a 6 yr old and limit there time on video games. If its a nice day were out side doing something constructive and if its a crappy day outside we find other things to do board games drawing etc. I also agree kids are just straight up spoiled these days. Its kind of sad to see it happen right in front of you as I have friends with kids and they rule the parents and get what ever they what. Its up to the parents to teach them respect, morels, work ethics etc if not the parents who will guide them down a straight path, but I feel you UnderTow are children are losing this electronic battle and so is our are generation as they are slipping into a electronics coma. I think it all comes down to how your parents raised you and how you balance fun and every day general life. Quote
