There has been a tremendous amount of confusion regarding the Combat Training feature introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Essentially, this mode allows you face AI opponents and, theoretically, helps those who are not quite used to Call of Duty multiplayer, or just rusty, practice. It’s totally separate from online and your friends can join in, so, it’s multiplayer “offlineâ€. Ugh, confusing! So, to clear up things a bit, and possibly enrage a few of you, is Treyarch’s Design Directory – David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar. Click for more info and sources. The following was said on the main Call of Duty website (source): Combat Training is online. You need a profile on PSN/Xbox Live to use it. It is very similar, but not identical, to the normal rank progression. It doesn’t support Contracts or Leaderboards but it does support (many) Challenges and most of the unlocks. When in Combat Training, you start at level 1 and progress through the ranks. This rank progression is completely independent of the normal rank progression. You can be level 40 in Combat Training and level 10 in the regular game at the same time. Combat Training is for someone who wants to get a taste of what it is like to play online without actually needing to play online against real opponents. To the extent possible and practical, we start you off at level 1 and you unlock features and earn cP (the currency) along the way. It’s a simulation of playing online against real players. A big boss around here once called it “Single Player Online.†That doesn’t make sense and hurts the brains of MP people, but will make sense to SP people. It’s a way to play MP “by yourself†but you don’t have to. You can invite friends and they can play with or against you. In that regard, it’s similar to a Private Match. Here is the total story on all of this: ONLINE (requires Internet and the appropriate account depending on the game platform) * Player Match = Rank progression. Get XP and cP. * Wager Match = No rank progression. No XP awards. Just cP earn potential. No Create a Class. All load-outs are pre-determined. * Combat Training = Rank progression (but separate from than Player Match version) * Private Match = Allow Player Classes or make Custom Classes you want players to use. No XP or cP awarded. Up to 2 player split-screen depending on playlist. Think of a Split Screen player like a player in your COD party. If the playlists allows COD parties, than it allows 2 players in splitscreen. Like a party, the two split-screen players will usually be on the same team. LOCAL (does not require Internet) * Split-Screen = 4 players together on a single machine. No rank progression. No XP or cP. Everything is unlocked. * LAN Party/System Link = No rank progression. No XP or cP. Everything is unlocked. David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar What we get from this spiel is that Combat Training requires you to play online, the ranking system is different and that you can play split screen with your friends. So, what do you think of Combat Training? Is it something that will get you to purchase the game, a decent feature or purely a gimmick to you? Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

“We can confirm that SOCOM 4 will be released in 2011,” SCEA senior corporate communications director Patrick Seybold told us back in July, right after the tactical shooter had been delayed. “The team is focusing on additional features which will help to deliver the most compelling and immersive SOCOM experience yet.” As glimpsed in a gameplay video recorded at this year’s Eurogamer Expo in London, one of those additional — and don’t forget compelling and immersive! — features will be a 3D display mode. Responding to the discovery on the official SOCOM forums, Zipper Interactive community specialist Chris Roper explicitly noted that the game hadn’t been delayed simply to cater to a small group of expensive televisions. “As I said I’ve said before and as [forum member] Tombstone mentioned, the game was not delayed to add 3D in any way, shape or form,” he wrote. “Did the extra time allow for it? Well, you’ve seen the video. “Err, I mean, no comment. Or something.” That 3D something joins SOCOM 4‘s other list of announced features, including PlayStation Move support and a soundtrack by Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary. Marketing department, that’s your cue to put “An astonishing sensory assault!” on the back of the box. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Ok, I have found where to fix your members names on the roster... I will put together screen shots this afternoon. Basically as the Team Leader, you can go to your Team Management and click on the Members, then click Edit Member. You would then change the display name there. You can also change a members level, and fyi you can have more than one Leader/Co-Leaders

Gears of War 3 is getting a public beta early next year, Epic Games revealed at an event this week at their studio. This will be the first time a Gears of War game is getting a public beta. Epic Games’ Rod Fergusson told the gathered press that the team has always wanted to do a public beta, but only if they could later use that feedback to improve the title. Now that Gears of War 3′s launch has been pushed back from April to the fall of 2011, the team thinks they will be able to to do just that. No word yet on when next year the multiplayer beta will be hitting. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

With just a few weeks to go until Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II hits the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and PC, you might be wondering what’s up with Starkiller and his master, Darth Vader, these days. Lots of complicated cloning problems, is what, a sensitive area which the new trailer for LucasArts’ explores while also delivering plenty of over the top lightsaber action. The trailer certainly has me interested in one thing—is James Earl Jones completely unavailable for voicing Darth Vader these days? Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

Sega today confirmed work on its Captain America game, officially titled Captain America: Super Soldier, due in 2011 in conjunction with a feature film. Marvel is already in production on the Captain America and Thor movies due next year (in advance of Joss Whedon’s 2012 Avengers flick), and Sega will also be handling the Thor game adaptation. Captain America is being developed at Next Level Games (Punch-Out!! Wii, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe) for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PSP. A third-person action game, Super Soldier will bet set during World War II and will see Cap facing off against his nemesis, Red Skull, within the walls of a castle turned Hydra base. Sega is touting a “highly athletic combat system with fluid platforming and a highly tuned suite of shield attacks,” mentioning that the iconic offensive weapon will be used for “taking out multiple enemies at once, deflecting incoming fire back at enemies, solving puzzles, and scaling walls.” The game’s story is penned by Christos Gage and is set “within the same world” as the movie. Red Dead Redemption’s “Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack” will be released for free next Tuesday, October 12, on PSN and Xbox Live. The DLC’s “Savvy Merchant” outfit will grant the wearer the power to purchase guns and ammo for half price, while the pelt and hide adorned “Expert Hunter” outfit will double the amount you earn from selling your skinned trophies. That’s not the best part, though. The best part of the free outfit pack is that it will add the Jackalope (pictured) to the game. Though, considering there are soon to be zombies in the Wild West, this horned jackrabbit seems pretty darned ordinary. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) Urgent Fury Command: More...

2K Games has announced that buying the Borderlands “Game of the Year Edition” will grant you entry into what it’s calling the “Duke Nukem Forever Early Access Club.” In other words, the Borderlands re-release — which bundles together the original, Gearbox-developed “role-playing shooter” and all its DLC — comes with a code to download the DNF demo (plus other, undefined “goodies”). Now, here’s where we’d normally tell you when said demo would be available to said club members … Problem is, 2K isn’t saying exactly when we can expect the DNF demo — apart from “prior to the retail launch of the game” in calendar 2011. There’s also no word on just how much longer those who are not in the “early access club” would have to wait for their demo. But, hey, you’ve already waited forever for the game — what’s a few more weeks or months? The Borderlands GOTY Edition will be available on October 12 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Activision and developer Treyarch are adding a new dimension to the Call of Duty series, bringing stereoscopic 3D visuals to Call of Duty: Black Ops for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The option will be coming to the next marquee Call of Duty game “day one, out of the box,” says Mark Lamia, studio head at Treyarch. Stereoscopic 3D visual effects will be available to players in all of Call of Duty: Black Ops modes—campaign, multiplayer, Combat Training, Zombies—as long as they own a 3D-ready HDTV or NVIDIA 3D Vision-ready PC, using active shutter glasses technology. “For me, seeing was believing,” Lamia tells Kotaku. “We saw it, thought it was really cool, but even though it was really cool, it had to work with the game and make sense.” The team at Treyarch had been researching and developing a stereoscopic 3D display option during the course of Call of Duty: Black Ops’ development, Lamia says, adding that the game’s 3D special effects felt like a “natural” fit for the blockbuster franchise. And despite their enthusiasm—and the opportunity to buy a half-dozen new 3D TVs for the office for further research—Lamia says he had his doubts about the feature. “I would say I was a pretty reasonable skeptic,” Lamia said. “I’m a pretty hardcore FPS guy. I was really concerned about eyestrain, but it was really immersive.” Lamia says the experience is “seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time.” For the millions of Call of Duty players without a pricey 3D TV in our homes, Lamia says he hopes that they’ll get to experience the mode someday. “We hope people will be playing Black Ops for a while,” Lamia said. “So even if you don’t have a 3D TV now, that’s fine, when you do, you can pop in Black Ops and it’s good to go.” Call of Duty: Black Ops will ship for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 9. Our Developer Profile series introduces you to the many faces of Zipper Interactive. From designers to artists to programmers to audio engineers to producers, you’ll meet the creative minds that make Zipper what it is (and maybe learn a few surprises along the way). This week's profiled Zipper is David Johnson, Tools Engineer extraordinaire. David's work affects many facets of our titles, particularly with designing the tools that allow the games to be created. Here's what he had to tell us: Job Title: Tools Engineer Years at Zipper:Almost 4! Years in the Industry: 4 in the games industry, 10 in the software industry. Favorite Zipper Game: MAG Favorite Non-Zipper Game: It’s too hard to pick just one! It’s got to be one of Chrono Trigger, Zelda: A Link to the Past, or Tales of Symphonia. Motto: "Here is a test to find whether your mission on earth is finished: If you're alive it isn't." – Richard Bach What is it that you do specifically, and can you walk us through your typical day? If a game studio is like an RPG adventuring party, then I would be one of the white mages: I don’t have a lot of direct damaging spells, but I definitely help everyone else out with the healing magic. My role at Zipper is largely in the support department, doing a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that helps keep the "more renowned" departments—art, design, and engineering—working at top speed! My main responsibility is to give our level editor all of the TLC that it needs in order to pump out new levels fast. I’ve also been helping the Cinema guys iron out the process for making cutscenes and scripted sequences. The typical day for me right now is 9 in the morning until 7 or so on a smooth day, though not every day is a smooth day! I catch up on emails in the morning and check to see if there are any critical (or just plain annoying) issues that’s keeping others in the company from working. I do a lot of troubleshooting whenever things go wrong and then do my best to fix all of the problems plaguing everyone else. After that, I’m pretty much off to the races by making new features for our level editor, data compile process, and Maya. It’s hard to say what I’ll be working on two weeks from now because my team covers a lot of ground and pretty much affects everyone else! How did you get into the industry? It’s kind of a crazy story when you get down to it. My previous job was in Ohio where I worked as a Department of Defense contractor for the US Air Force. I was looking for a career change and had uploaded my résumé onto the Internet in hopes of finding another job that was software related. In all honesty, even though I’ve wanted to make video games since I was 9 years old, I didn’t even stop to think that I could get into the industry! But whether it was luck, talent, or both, a recruiter for the games industry contacted me by phone and asked me if I was interested in getting them to bat for me, and I figured that it was worth a try, especially if it had some possibility. Within a month or so, they got me in contact with Zipper, and the day after my phone interview I was told that Zipper wanted to fly me out for a real interview. Pretty much a week later they called me back with an official offer, and so I picked up all of my belongings and moved all the way across the country. What are some other games or projects that you’ve worked on in the past? MAG and SOCOM 4 have been the only real games I’ve worked on (well, outside of all the TI-83 games I created during the days of high school; but alas, they probably don’t count). Before joining up with Zipper, however, I was doing DoD work for the Air Force. Our team’s main focus was to test systems the Air Force was developing. We created a simulated world and ran their programs through the gauntlet. In many ways, it was like making something like SimCity... except instead of making fake buildings, fire departments, and roads, we were creating fake airplanes, tanks, cameras, and missiles. What’s your proudest moment? I’d have to say getting hired by Zipper and not getting fired within the first month is certainly one of the high points of my life! I honestly never thought that I’d be here, creating video games as my day-to-day job. I can’t tell you the number of times I told myself, “I may be decent at this, but I probably don’t hold a candle to the guys who do this day in and day out.†Well, as it turns out, I am very glad to say that I was horribly wrong about that... or at least I’ve managed to convince everyone else I was wrong about that. MWAHAHA... oh wait, they’re probably reading this too. Foiled again! Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans? One of my biggest secrets is that, before I found myself in this fairy tale world of working on video games, I was once a guy that would post video game forums, would work on fansites, and dream about how cool it would be to actually do this sort of stuff for a living. So if you’re like me and dream about doing this someday, don’t give up on the dream, and don’t let anyone stop you from pursuing it! Sure, it’s very different from what I thought it was going to be like, but it’s crazy fun. Also, huge thanks to everyone who’s out there supporting MAG and SOCOM. Really, it’s awesome to hear all of the comments and to see how passionate you are over our games! Don't forget to click this link and leave your questions to David for next week's Zipline podcast!
