Bungie just announced that Destiny‘s first expansion, The Dark Below, is coming out on December 9th. We caught up with Eric Osborne, Bungie’s Community and Marketing Relations Manager, to ask him a few questions about what we can expect to see. PlayStation.Blog: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today Eric. Today saw a huge announcement regarding Destiny’s first expansion: The Dark Below. What exactly are you announcing? Eric Osborne: We’re announcing that Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below, will be available on December 9th. Players who pick it up for download will be able to earn new weapons, armor, and gear, experience new story quests and missions, play new cooperative activities with their friends, and add three multiplayer Crucible arenas to their competitive rotation with Skyshock, Pantheon, and The Cauldron. In addition to new content, we’re also raising Player Light Level potential to 32, increasing Bounty slots from five to ten, and including some fun surprises for everyone who’s playing the game. PSB: The PlayStation exclusive content includes an exclusive Strike, what can you tell us about this strike and what players can look forward to? EO: We’re going to detail the Strike out in full in the weeks ahead, but we can confirm that PlayStation players will get access to an exclusive, cooperative Strike that takes place in the Black Garden, “The Undying Mind,†and more. We’ll share more in-depth details very soon. PSB: There is a new character in this expansion. Can you give us a little introduction? EO: Players are spending a lot of time in the Tower, so we took the opportunity to craft a new character, Eris, that players can receive quests and missions from in The Dark Below. Not only does she offer up unique bounties and rewards, she also has a story to tell about The Hive and their evil intentions. She’s also pretty creepy! PSB: What can we expect for the future of Destiny? EO: That’s a great question. We have well laid plans for the future, but you know what they say about those! We just put the finishing touches on The Dark Below, and we have some fun and much requested updates en route that will land before and after December 9th. In the days and months ahead, we’ll keep charting the course for Destiny, right alongside the awesome community of players. As always, it should be a great ride. All great stuff Eric, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today. I’m sure our players, like us, can’t wait to get a hold of this new expansion on December 9th. View the full article

Hey PlayStation.Blog friends, Casey Lynch from Midnight City here again! Costume Quest 2 hits PS4 and PS3 in North America today, which means costumed warriors Wren and Reynold are back to save Halloween! No pressure, right? I mean, you’d think they could just catch a break and have a normal Halloween like other kids and stuff. But NO! A probably-very-evil dentist called Dr. Orel White, DDS, wants to save the world… from the terrors of SUGAR! To get rid of all those cavity-inducing candies for good, he plots to erase Halloween from history! This simply won’t do. But what are the kids supposed to do? This isn’t like fighting simple Grubbins, those green pushovers. These are Time Wizards, and Kronys, and worse. You’re going to need some seriously sweet firepower to stop them — like SACKBOY, what?! You’ll also have an improved battle system at your disposal, which includes a new special attack mechanic that rewards fast reflexes, and nearly four dozen Creepy Treat Cards that you can collect and use to increase damage, earn multiple attacks, and more to even the odds. Are you ready to put it all on the line for Halloween? Will you travel to a faraway dystopian future, a place where candy is outlawed, and fun is a thing of the past? Are you sweet enough to save the world? We sure hope so. Costume Quest 2 is available today for $14.99 on PS4 and PS3, with other territories to follow shortly. And all you Vita fans out there, yes we love Vita and yes we’d love to bring the game to Vita, great idea! But we have nothing to announce about that right now. View the full article

Hi everyone! When we at Beatshapers announced #killallzombies for PS4 on August 8th, we were not expecting to receive as much praise and anticipation for the game as we did, so thank you for helping us generate that. And now we’re back to provide a significant update on the game. #killallzombies sees you attempting to survive wave after wave of enemy zombies with every wave increasing in difficulty as the complexity rises to provide a new experience different from that of the previous wave. You will find an ever-expanding horde of zombies forming over time; therefore if you do not keep up with killing the zombies from the previous wave, you will find that you have an even larger enemy count with nothing on their minds other than earning their meal for the day. Bosses are big enemies with unique attack mechanics in certain waves, you must find ways to evade any zombie bosses you encounter, while attempting to steadily damage them; if you get too close to their attacks, then you will not last too long. Each boss has their own strengths and weaknesses with different stun times, while more bosses will be added to the game in upcoming updates. The perks have tremendous power in each of them that can shift the balance of power from the hordes of zombies surrounding you to the player. The perks are all described in detail on the perk selection screen. Perks possess varying lengths of effectiveness, such as a one shot effect for a huge explosion from “The Duke Is In Town†perk, a time limited effect for freezing bullets from the “Ice Ice Baby†perk, and a session permanent effect for moving slower but increasing the amount of damage inflicted upon enemies from the “Heavyweight†perk. It is vital to choose perks wisely and strategically in order to progress in game. When in broadcast mode, there is a different element of gameplay available to the player in order to engage socially, as we actually involve spectators within the gameplay, so they can interact with players while watching a live stream of you playing. The next encounter vote is placed on top of the screen during gameplay provides extra game events and changes every 80 seconds with the potential of them including random weapons, more or less zombies, random events, and much more besides. Spectators can vote for their preferences via the Live from PlayStation interactions panel or the Twitch website or simply by typing the exact name into the chat window with the chat commands being listed in the manual. Most chat commands have a cool down period and some chat commands must be repeated a number of times in order to be accurately executed. The perks screen has its own voting mechanic, so if a player decides to allow spectators to vote for perks, the player earns extra XP if they select the most voted perk from the spectators. You can avoid broadcast mode if you prefer or even turn off interactions entirely via the options menu, although the broadcast mode and interactions provide an extra dimension of fun and spectators can help you survive longer and earn a higher position on the scoreboards. If you are a YouTube streamer, please contact us via e-mail with any requests such as exclusive custom chat commands, channel logos, backgrounds or in-game weapons to provide some extra fun for those watching via the YouTube app. #killallzombies will receive post-launch support with further content and game modes patched into the game for free, therefore when the game launches today on PlayStation Store for $13.99, you will be guaranteed to receive the full experience of the game. You may see some chat commands in the accompanying video, although here are a couple of exclusive chat commands that are not listed in the manual. “Hexawave!†spawns a large wave and “nutcracker†spawns a nut decoy, which zombies will start attacking. Hi. My name is Rory Jackson. I’m the Studio Head at DR Studios in the UK, the developers of the free-to-play strategy combat game Battle Islands, which is launching on PS4 today! Battle Islands is set in the South Pacific in 1942. A platoon of soldiers land on a tropical island and your task is to defeat enemy forces, build a garrison to defend your island, and go out guns blazing to attack other islands with the huge array of air, sea and land forces you have at your disposal — tanks, jeeps, gunboats, and fighter planes to name but a few! We’re absolutely delighted to bring our game to PS4 today — it’s a major achievement for us, and the culmination of a huge amount of work and effort from everyone here. Battle Islands started life as a game on mobile devices, where it’s been really popular. However, it’s really important to stress it isn’t simply a mobile game, as our PS4 launch clearly shows. We’ve rebuilt it from ground up to make sure it’s up to scratch for a next gen console like the PS4. We’ve built brand new, higher-resolution assets that we believe look stunning, and built a completely new user interface that really capitalizes on DualShock 4. We hope you love the WW2 theme — we strive to keep the game authentic to the era, and you can often find us in development meetings debating about whether a certain tank was used in that era, and in that field of battle! One final thing I wanted you to know is we have lots of great new stuff already in the pipeline that will be coming to the game in future months, so keep an eye out for the regular updates. All that’s left to say is we really hope you enjoy our game, and its time for you to head out into battle, soldier! View the full article

PlayStation fans, Vita aficionados, and “sinners†around the world — the day you’ve been waiting for is finally here! I’m extremely proud to welcome you to the world of Freedom Wars, which launches today exclusively on PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV. Over the past few months it’s been my pleasure to share Freedom Wars trailers, screenshots, character art, and information with you. Whether it’s been here on the PlayStation blog, or on IGN’s Podcast Beyond, you’ve responded with nothing but pure excitement. That’s why I’m so thrilled to share one final trailer with you — one that’s never been seen before, and that I think sets the mood perfectly for what you’re about to experience. Are you ready to fight for your freedom? For those that have been waiting to purchase the digital version of Freedom Wars from the PlayStation Store and want to take advantage of the Pre-Order items, we’re happy to inform you that the same DLC items will be automatically added to your Cart . Offer ends 11/11 so don’t wait! But before you jump into the game, let me announce a few things here and now that you might not be aware of: Firstly, patch 1.20 will be available today, so please make sure to update! This patch does several things, including: The addition of the online 8-player PvP mode, known in the game as “Vs. Operations.†The Elimination of the online-pass that was required in the Eastern territories. General difficulty tweaks and balancing. I’m also happy to announce that we have several weeks of DLC planned for all of you, including free DLC every week until the end of November! Everything from weapon packs and hairstyle additions to battle music and sticker packs is on the way, so please keep checking back to download the latest content and keep your Sinner stylish! But before I let you go to start working off that 1 million year sentence, I wanted to leave you with one final message from Junichi Yoshizawa, Producer of Freedom Wars from Japan Studio. Hello everyone, This is Junichi Yoshizawa, producer on Freedom Wars. We’ve finally reached the launch of Freedom Wars for North America and Europe — thank you very much for all of your patience! I’m so happy that we’re finally able to get Freedom Wars into your hands! Freedom Wars isn’t a game that’s just about defeating your enemies, it’s a game about “Reclamation†— saving your friends and civilians from the clutches of the enemies you face. While you’re playing through the game, don’t forget the various cooperative and competitive modes that you can enjoy in Freedom Wars! The co-op mode will let you take on any Operation, whether it’s story-based or a specially timed “Redemption†Operation, with teammates via Ad-hoc or Online connections. The latter half of the game can become a bit difficult, so please play with others in order to complete these Operations and finish the story! I’d also like to share a little advice to those that are about to start the game. As you play, you’ll be able to gradually level-up the equipment of NPC characters you encounter throughout the story. From the “Window on Liberty†located within your cell, make sure to claim the “Comrade Loadout†entitlements for your fellow teammates — taking a well-leveled team with you into combat will drastically increase your chances of success! There’s also ways to strengthen your Sinner by equipping “Augmentations.†As you proceed throughout the story, you’ll receive the ability to create these Augmentations — make sure to create and equip those that will be most helpful given the Operation you’re trying to complete! I’ve already said a lot here, but I’m thrilled that we’re finally able to have our North American and European fans experience Freedom Wars. We created Freedom Wars with the hope that every PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV owner will be able to enjoy it. So please, enjoy the million year sentence-enforcing world, the reclamation-focused multiplayer, the League of Panopticons, and the engaging storyline that make up Freedom Wars. For the Greater Good! -Yoshizawa View the full article

Just a year ago, How to Survive made its way into the now-popular crafting survival genre. It reached top positions worldwide and even became a favorite in countries like Japan, where it can be spotted regularly among PlayStation Store’s top sellers (Last week it was top 3!). We felt we had to take advantage of the new generation of gaming, and we needed to make the experience even more fun and challenging, so next Tuesday we’re releasing How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition on PS4! As familiar as you might be with your old zombie-infested archipelago, there’s a ton of new content waiting for you in this fresh new complete edition, which includes the original crafting survival zombie nightmare along with six additional thrilling DLC packs. How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition is more fun and tougher than ever. In How to Survive, your worst enemy… is yourself! You will have to fulfill your basic needs of food, water and shelter while facing all sorts of natural and unnatural threats. So be prepared to find zombies, armored zombies, electric zombies, giants… but also piranha, crocodiles, bears, iguanas… and many more surprises. Brains are pretty hot items around here, so we encourage you to use them. Scattered around the islands you will find pages of an eccentric survival guide that can teach you how to handcraft dozens of weapons and tools: from fishing rods or crossbows, to chainsaws or Molotov cocktails. The choices you make will determine if you end up dead, alive… or undead! Watch the launch trailer above to see if you have what it takes to survive! Storm Warning Edition features more exuberant islands to explore and more survivors to play with. You’ll go up against a wide range of natural conditions that affect your gameplay, such as rain that will put your fires out and leave you in the dark, making cooking an impossible task and rendering your incendiary arrows useless, storms that can strike you with lightning but will also recharge generators, and that’s not mentioning the blinding fog, lava pits, toxic clouds… We’ve even introduced new game modes following community feedback, where you can join a friend and try to fix an escape vehicle, or fortify your camp with traps and barricades to see how long you can last. Good luck out there, Survivor! View the full article

So remember all that hype that started early last year about dinosaurs on PS4 but then things went dark on the project? Set your ringtones to roar, because dinosaurs are coming to the PS4 in Q1 of 2015 with the launch of Primal Carnage: Extinction! Primal Carnage: Extinction is a class-based, online multiplayer shooter unlike any other on the PS4 platform, featuring fast-paced combat, diverse environments, and over-the-top action. On a mysterious island overrun with prehistoric monsters, players can choose to fight as a variety of legendary dinosaurs or to join the human mercenary team armed with a unique, distinctive, and destructive arsenal aimed at making these bloodthirsty beasts extinct once and for all. What Happened to Primal Carnage Genesis?Primal Carnage: Genesis began development at a time when the Primal Carnage brand and Lukewarm Media were being pulled in different directions, and forces within the company could not completely agree on which project to pursue. There was a strong concept for single-player narrative-driven Primal Carnage game, and there was an exciting opportunity to develop a game for the PS4, built on the brand new Unreal Engine 4, but ultimately the project was too large in scope for Lukewarm Media to pursue, and the project was unofficially put on hold at the end of Summer 2013. Plans for the brand changed considerably after Lukewarm Media quietly transitioned ongoing management and development of Primal Carnage to Circle 5 Studios, a distributed network of developers and artists that had grown out of the modding community. Circle 5 felt that they were not in a position to pursue the extremely ambitious Primal Carnage: Genesis, but the company saw the opportunity to start over with the brand and to launch a multiplayer sequel to the first Primal Carnage on the PS4 platform with our friends and co-developers: Pub Games, a Melbourne-based team that had previously assisted development of the original Primal Carnage. Is Genesis dead?Speaking on behalf of the Primal Carnage team (both old and new), we were blown away by the support Genesis received in the last year and a half, and if everything goes well for us with Primal Carnage: Extinction we would definitely consider pursuing Genesis. For the moment, however, Genesis is effectively still on hold. We want to thank PlayStation, Epic Games, Steven Spielberg, Natural History Museums around the world, and all of the Primal Carnage fans out there for inspiring us and helping us bring our dinosaurs into your living rooms. Let loose in Kyrat, I was immediately overwhelmed by the volume of play built into this open world space. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Far Cry 4 invites players back into a first-person exploration of quiet villages, dangerous tyranny, and majestic views. It’s packed with emergent missions that can hook players into gunfights and high-speed chases. It has laughs and bitter choices. Far Cry 4 tells the story of Ajay Ghale, a native of Kyrat who has returned to its war-torn valleys to spread his mother’s ashes. Ajay is pulled into the civil unrest plaguing the area thanks to the sociopathic despot Pagan Min and his violent regime. I asked Game Director Pat Methe to share five of his favorite moments from Far Cry 4. Watch the video below and follow along. As a bonus, I sat down and played Far Cry 4 myself and picked out six things that caught my eye during a three-hour binge session. 1.) Emergent Missions Far Cry 4 tells its story through various mission types, but many of the most interesting moments in Ubisoft Montreal’s open world emerge from interactions with Pagan Min’s troops in the wild. Driving from one point of interest to another? You might stumble upon one of Min’s patrols — suddenly, you’re waging a desperate gunfight on a rocky cliff. There’s no official goal with these fights other than survival. But they tell their own stories, and enable Ajay to scavenge for supplies along the way. 2.) Side-quests, Sights, and Collectibles Pagan Min’s troops have caused terrible damage to Kyrat and its people. While exploring villages and temples, you’ll find ample opportunities to push the tyrant back, from rescuing hostages to tearing down propaganda posters in peaceful villages. There’s also a host of collectibles to be found for those craving completion, and make sure you take a moment to enjoy Kyrat’s expansive vistas when the dust settles after a fight. 3.) Go Racing Early in Ajay’s journey, he’ll encounter an aggressive (and passionate) filmmaker who has set up races across Kyrat for filming purposes (and money making). Find these races and you’ll be speeding down dirt roads and in between trees on an ATV, hitting checkpoints along the way. Will these thrilling diversions weaken Min’s grasp on Kyrat? Maybe not. But filmmakers need to make a living, people! 4.) Skill Trees As Ajay gains experience, you can unlock his most powerful abilities by spending points across two different skill trees. Themed after the tiger and the elephant, these skills improve Ajay’s battle prowess and his ability to interact with the world around him. The tiger skill tree is focused on combat, gunplay, and raw aggression. Dealing with Min’s troops does tend to involve some bloodshed, after all. The elephant skill tree, alternatively, focuses on more defensive abilities, like bandaging up Ajay’s wounds. A mixture of both trees seems appropriate, though you’re welcome to focus on whatever abilities best suit your style. 5.) Killer Goats During my session, I was tasked with clearing a village of Min’s men while keeping the hostages held there alive. I ditched my vehicle outside the village so I wouldn’t attract any attention, and used Ajay’s camera to survey the landscape and mark possible targets. Three innocent villagers were being held at gunpoint, but I spotted a route into the village that would let me stealthily take out the guards. Upon approach, I came close to a pair of goats milling outside the village — too close, actually. The goats attacked and killed Ajay before he could complete the mission. A deadly lesson in how dangerous Kyrat can be, even when you have the upper hand. Note: I eventually saved the hostages. But I had to kill the goats. 6.) Defending the Divine Long after my tragic encounter with the goats, Ajay gained access to some of Min’s intel, which revealed the next target of the tyrant’s forces: a peaceful temple. This began one of my favorite missions in Far Cry 4 thus far, which saw Ajay setting up defenses for the temple and preventing Min’s soldiers from destroying the holy artifacts within. The mission combined frantic gunplay with a touch of improvised explosives, as Ajay sprinted back and forth across the temple grounds to stop the attacking soldiers. This mission illustrates how Far Cry 4 ties play together with Ajay’s story — a man discovering his ancestry and his spiritual connection to the land. Fortunately for me, no goats were present during this mission. Far Cry 4 launches on PS4 and PS3 on November 18th. View the full article

Hi everyone, before I dig into today’s blog post, I wanted to invite you to tune in to tonight’s Extra Life livestream at 5:00 pm PT, where I will personally guide fans through a live demo of our studio’s upcoming open-world game — The Tomorrow Children. We’re really excited to participate in the Extra Life program and hope as many of you as possible can stop by to check out the first look at gameplay footage from The Tomorrow Children! Go here at 5:00 pm PT tonight to watch live. But for right now, I’m going to talk a little about the tech behind The Tomorrow Children. Hopefully you’ve all seen the trailer and are wondering how the glory we managed to get that crazy surreal look we have. When the project started we had a meeting with Mark Cerny and he said “I want Q-Games to do something that’s a little… outside the box.†So I took that to heart and decided to use the PS4’s awesome compute power to drive three things: Cinematography, Lighting, and Geometry. CinematographySo I immediately drove the technology towards “cinematography†which I think is a much more visually stunning style compared to CG that strives to be realistic. Realistic graphics give us directly what we can see, but cinematography also gives us what we imagine we’re seeing. So, for example, if you’re looking at a green field on a cloudy day, the raw photons hitting our eyes are actually a bit of a dull green but the brain’s imagination (and this is different for every person) spruces up the image we are seeing, making it more stimulating and exciting. Pretty much every movie you have ever seen has gone through this kind of color grading process, the most recent fad of which is a process called “orange-teal†that boosts orange in the highlights and blue in the shadows plus a number of other tweaks. Recent TV series such as Breaking Bad, Utopia, and True Detective rely on this heavily to set up atmosphere and scene tone. So I thought to myself, why not do this for games too — but not via a few simple tone-mapping parameters, let’s go the whole hog and create a professional cinematic color-grading process. And we have two major advantages over cameras and their sensors. The first is that a modern 3D pipeline generates a larger dynamic range of color which gives us more freedom, and the second is that we have ‘Z’ information for every pixel which lets us introduce Z as a parameter into the color-grading process. This lets us do things such bring up black levels in the distance, or even swizzle colors around a little based on distance from the camera. LightingOkay, with that cinematic feel to everything, we started investigating how to get a “pre-rendered†look to our 3D in realtime and we decided we were going to have to go all out and do something that no-one is doing. So we researched and invented something called “cascaded voxel cone-ray tracing.†The concept is a little complex but it involves calculating and storing light and its direction around the player as she moves in ever increasing cascades of data. Because we have volumetric data (the voxel cone part) it means we can bounce light around fairly cheaply and any one pixel on the screen has up to three bounces of light hitting it, and from all directions too. Now, by the third bounce, the light is quite diminished in power but it makes that subtle difference that tricks the eye into thinking it is looking at something with true presence. Interestingly most Pixar-style CG movies that you have seen are only using one bounce and although they beat us in detail because they can spend 30 minutes or more rendering one frame, our lighting is a lot more subtle and effective. For example, we can move a big red object around in real time and watch the sunlight reflecting off of it bounce onto the surrounding objects, and then watch that light bounce again onto other nearby objects that wouldn’t normally be lit (indirect lighting). GeometryFinally, we needed some other new tech to build the game around so we started looking into techniques to do deformable landscapes. We wanted something you could dig and mine, or create shapes in but we didn’t want anything too strongly grid based; we wanted it to feel more real. So we went with something called “layered depth cubes,†which is a way to represent the world without using polygons. Instead, it’s represented as volumes, which are then converted to polygons as needed (for example if the player goes near them and they need to be actually drawn on screen). The benefit of not using polygons means the data is far easier manipulate and we can do boolean options (addition/subtraction) on the data to cut out holes or to add details and the whole structure remains solid and intact. The added advantage of course is this all ties in with the lighting above to give it quick, easy-to-access data structures to bounce its light through! These are just three areas of technology we’ve created for The Tomorrow Children and without the amazing power under the hood in the PS4 none of them would be possible. The future of 3D graphics is here and it is beautiful! View the full article

PSBlog Feed: Check Out Share Play in Action on PS4
Commander Fury posted a topic in Playstation Blog
The PS4 system software update v2.00, codenamed Masamune, will be available to download on Tuesday, October 28th. One of the features included in the update that I’m most excited about is Share Play, and we put together a quick video to show you how this innovative feature works. Check it out! As we’ve said before, the best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch.†PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game for up to one hour at a time — even when they don’t own a copy of it. Share Play has three main functions: Share Screen — Share your screen with a friend, allowing them to spectate. This is ideal for PS4 owners that want to watch their friends play a game and provide helpful tips. PlayStation Plus is not required to use this. Hand over my controller — Pass your controller to a friend, virtually, and watch them play. Your friend does not need to own, or even download the game, in order to use this feature. This is perfect for introducing your friends to new games. The host will need to be a PlayStation Plus member, but the guest does not. Hand over the second player controller — If a game supports local multiplayer, you can have your friend join as player two. Again, the visitor does not need to own, or download the game in order to use this feature. Both players will need PlayStation Plus to use this feature. Share Play pushes the social interactivity of PlayStation 4 to new heights and we can’t wait for everyone to try it out. What games are you looking forward to trying Share Play with? PSBlog Feed: Costume Quest 2 Out 10/28 on PS4, PS3
Commander Fury posted a topic in Playstation Blog
Hey guys, Casey Lynch from Midnight City here. I gotta tell you, I’m really excited for October. It’s that time of year when the wind chills, the scary movies start playing on TV, and tombstones start appearing in front yards. Halloween is almost here! And this year, that means something truly special on PlayStation: Costume Quest 2! Yes friends, the Midnight City team and the folks at Double Fine have worked tirelessly in the candy mill preparing the game for PS4 and PS3, and we’re happy to announce that Costume Quest 2 will be available on both PlayStation platforms just in time for Halloween on Tuesday, October 28th. Even better, PlayStation players will receive a special treat with it: Sackboy! We worked with the super cool people at Media Molecule to create a special Sackboy costume that PlayStation fans can wear around town and take into battle. Getting a character as well-known as Sackboy into our game was no small feat, we’re really glad it worked out and appreciate all the help from the always-awesome PlayStation and Media Molecule teams. You guys are the best! Anyways, that’s it for now. We have a ton of new trailers showing off gameplay and new costumes, you owe it to yourself to check them out. We’ll be hanging around the comments to answer any questions. View the full article -
It was announced that the horror game Home was coming to PlayStation this year, and I am very excited to say that the PS4 version of the game will be launching October 28th — just in time for Halloween! This horror adventure is a player-driven story that responds to your choices; taking cues from adventure games as well as side-scrollers, what happens in Home is entirely up to the player. As you make choices and even explore, the game changes in subtle ways to reflect your adventure. I like to think of it as the kind of game you’ll immediately want to talk about with other players as soon as you finish it, just to compare notes. The Vita version will follow very soon after — I honestly just couldn’t wait to get the PS4 version into players’ sweaty hands. But Vita owners, fear not: Home supports cross buy, so you’ll get both versions of the game for the same price anyway, even if you get the PS4 version! The only one who’ll be more scared is my accountant; for the first two weeks I’m having a launch sale, so both versions of Home together will be available for the so-spooky-it-can’t-be-real price of $2.99. Home has been a weird little trailblazer, and it now has the honor of being the first title developed entirely within YoYo Games’ Game Maker Studio environment to natively hit PlayStation consoles. It’s pretty amazing as an independent developer to be able to make console games, and I couldn’t think of a better home for it (pun totally intended). Home will of course support Trophies on both systems, which I hope will encourage you to really look around and piece together some alternative takes on the story. Some players even now don’t know about some of the little details these Trophies will encourage you to find. Finally, to celebrate the launch of Home on PS4, I will be streaming a special Twitch stream on October 28th! Using my PS4 and a good ol’ PlayStation camera, you can watch me (and a few pals from the Toronto development community) play the game, learn all about its development, and have your questions answered in the chat. So come watch the stream at at 8:00 PM Eastern on Tuesday, October 28th. And don’t forget to turn out the lights! View the full article

Hi Everyone, this is Aidan from Eastasiasoft. After months hidden away inside our volcano lair, deep inside the jungles of Hong Kong, we are ready to share a first look at our upcoming PS4 game Lost Sea! Lost Sea is a 3D strategy action game that takes place inside a procedurally generated archipelago. It’s up to you to form a ragtag crew of survivors and explore the surrounding islands, hunting for resources to upgrade your ship and make your escape. Lost Sea is set inside a cartoon B-movie universe, where an otherwise normal individual (You!) is transformed into an intrepid hero after a routine flight over the Atlantic Ocean ends in disaster, leaving you stranded on a mysterious archipelago located deep inside the Bermuda Triangle. The world of Lost Sea is a dangerous and unforgiving place. Every island is filled with strange landmarks, a wide variety of deadly and exotic creatures, and powerful relics that can be used to your advantage. Often you’ll need to use your wits, as well as your machete, to escape dire situations and any member of your crew unlucky enough to get taken out or left behind won’t be coming back. In order to succeed in Lost Sea you will need to balance the immediate needs of you and your crew with the longer term goals such as researching powerful upgrades and unlocking access to new areas. Short term goals include things like gathering food to restore health and stamina — a frequent necessity in a hazardous island environment. Whereas upgrades allow you to tailor the game to your playstyle. For instance, do you want to give your crew members armor so they can survive longer or torches that allow them to gather materials and protect themselves at night? Maybe one of your crew members is great at hunting out powerful artifacts but can you risk sending him out alone at night while you guard everyone else? We wanted to make a game that revolves around making tough decisions and with materials being so scarce it often leads to quite painful trade offs. Another goal we had from very early on was to create a bright and colorful world that is different for every player. We procedurally generate every island, from the look and layout of the island itself, the critters and objects that can be found inside and its location in the overall archipelago. Getting that system up and running was a pretty gargantuan task and something that could fill up an entire blog post all on its own. We plan on going into much more detail about the mechanics and behind the scenes workings of Lost Sea as we continue development so keep an eye on our site for future updates. For those of you lucky enough to live in and around Australia, we’ll be attending PAX AUS this month to show off a bunch of our existing titles and give people the first public demo for Lost Sea over at the International Indie Pavilion. For those of you who can’t make it to the show you’ll have to wait to play the game when it’s officially released in 2015, but we still want to hear your feedback and impressions! Get in touch with us in the comments section below. View the full article

The storied Geometry Wars series is set to make its long-awaited return (and its PlayStation debut) this fall as Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, being released under the reawakened Sierra brand. It’s not easy to live up to the Geometry Wars pedigree, but a recent hands-on run of one of the game’s earlier stages was all the assurance I needed that the spirit of Geometry Wars is thriving, guided by the neon, wireframe hands of Lucid Games: a studio founded by former Bizarre Creations staffers. “Geometry Wars†has never been more apt as a title, featuring three-dimensional geometric battlefields that bend and flex under the force of your shape-shattering armaments. The level I played was shaped like a peanut: two spheres connected by a flared, narrow bridge. Fans of Geometry Wars 1 and 2 may find themselves instinctively looking for corners to lead errant enemies into to set up high-scoring opportunities, but the continuous nature of Dimensions’ playfields means veterans will need to readjust their habits accordingly. We recently spoke with Peter Cesario, Producer of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions about bringing the beloved series to PlayStation for the first time, what kinds of new weapons players can get their hands on, and combining its classic gameplay with more modern ideas. Got any questions about Geometry Wars’ current-gen debut? Leave ‘em in the comments and I’ll answer as best I can! View the full article

We’re also pleased to announce that this intriguing tale is also coming to PS Vita on the same date. The Unfinished Swan is also a cross buy title. If you’ve purchased The Unfinished Swan before, you’re entitled to it on all PlayStation platforms. Now in silky smooth 1080p for PS4, The Unfinished Swan puts you in the fairytale story of a young boy chasing after a swan who has wandered off into a surreal, unfinished kingdom. You begin in a completely white space and paint to splatter your surroundings, to reveal the world around you. That, however, is just the beginning, and we wouldn’t dare spoil the rest. The Unfinished Swan will challenge your belief in confronting the unknown. It will spark your imagination, and keep you exploring to see what lies beyond the blank “whitespace†exposed before you. You may even encounter the eccentric King who built this realm. Speaking of kings and realms, The Unfinished Swan was originally crafted for PS3 by the incredible minds of Giant Sparrow, a development team whom we are proud to call “family.†Ian Dallas, founder of Giant Sparrow and lead creator of The Unfinished Swan has a fairytale story of his own in how The Unfinished Swan came to be. In October 2008, Ian submitted “Whitespace†to the still-running indie-dev game showcase at the Tokyo Game Show — “Sense of Wonder.†He was honored to present as one of twelve finalists. After the show, Santa Monica External Studio connected with Ian to help him realize his dream of publishing The Unfinished Swan and to enable him to establish his team, Giant Sparrow. Three years later on Oct 23rd, 2012, The Unfinished Swan launched on PS3. Below, you can take a look at where The Unfinished Swan started in Ian’s mind. Ian’s story is as true to the nature of what The Unfinished Swan is all about — discovering and exploring the unknown. And as today marks the 2-year anniversary of the game launching on PS3, Santa Monica Studios and Giant Sparrow want to give a heartfelt thanks to Armature Studios for handling the development of The Unfinished Swan to be fully realized on PS4 and PS Vita. They were amazing partners to work with and this would not be possible without them. View the full article
