Agent: Packers QB Brett Favre will retire after 17 seasons

UNDATED (AP) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons.

``He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that,'' Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Tuesday.

Favre's agent Bus Cook said the 38-year-old quarterback told him of his decision Monday night.

``Nobody pushed Bret Favre out the door, but then nobody encouraged him not to go out that door, either,'' Cook said by phone from his Hattiesburg, Miss., office.

FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the three-time MVP planned to retire.

I just don't understand why it was moss he wanted so bad but it is what it is and favre is gone.

Because when his head is in the game, he is still the best reciever in football.

ok lets get one thing straight here

Brett Favre DID NOT retire because of Randy Moss. He retired because he was mentally tired. As a QB in the NFL I can't imagine the strain of having to play perfect every game and lead your team through the mud and shit every week.

As a diehard Bears fan I'm glad to see him go but as a football fan it is sad day and brings an end to the 90's era, once and for all.

This shocked me today when I heard and it wasn't because of Moss. I don't blame the guy for wanting to retire, he feels like they poured everything into last season and didn't even make the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers finally gets his shot, should be interesting as he has the talent to be a good QB.

Btw as a Bears fan this makes me happy to see him go, but from a football standpoint it kinda sucks.

Favre said he wouldn't return if randy moss wasn't on his team. :-\

Brett Favre DID NOT say this. HIS agent DID. What is sickening is, it just so happens that every media member wants to focus on slander rather then the career that the one best QB's in NFL history had. I am not a Packers fan, but I appreciate what Favre did as a NFL fan. He was Mentally tired and needed to get away. Aaron Rodgers will get his chance. We will see if he can do it.

:'( I am so VERY sad to see him leave. He was and is the embodyment of football and its spirit. I enjoyed every year and was hoping for just one more but knew he wouldnt stay forever. There will never be another quite like him. :'(

Yea he had a hell of a career. but you cant play forever, & he still went out on a pretty high note.!

He is 2nd best all time QB in my book ;) (Joe is 1st)

That right there is exactly why he is the best QB of our generation. Joe was great an all, but Brett WAS football.
