  1. Hey there! I’m Chris Chung, an indie developer and crazy cat guy who made Catlateral Damage, a silly game about being a house cat on a rampage. Today, Fire Hose Games and I are excited to announce that we’re launching the game on PS4 on March 22nd, with a 20% discount for PS Plus members! Me-wow! Catlateral Damage is a first-person destructive cat simulator where you play as a cat and make messes. The controls are very similar to other first-person games, but there are no guns, shooting, or violence. Instead, you use your paws to cause as much destruction as possible in your owner’s house by knocking all of their belongings onto the floor. It’s quite a meditative experience that allows you to better empathize with the felines in your life. And it’s not just limited to your house; you can also wreck a log cabin, a mansion, and even a supermarket and museum! All levels are procedurally generated, so you can litter-ally be a cat fur-ever. (Sorry, cat puns are like my thing now.) There are two game modes: Objective Mode and Litterbox Mode. In Objective Mode, each level you play has a time limit and an objective. Your objective is simply to knock the target number of objects onto the floor within the time limit. In Litterbox Mode, you pick a level type and play for as long as you want! No time limit, no objective, just pure kitty chaos. In both game modes, you can collect upgrades by playing with various cat toys to improve your movement and swatting abilities. There are also random events that will occur periodically, some of which reward you with power ups and some that are just for fun. My favorite events are moon gravity and disco. They make absolutely no sense. The game originally started as a simple prototype back in 2013. I created it in 7 days for the 7DFPS game jam, where the only prompt was to make a new, interesting first-person shooter. I’ve always wanted to play a game where you could see through the eyes of an everyday house cat, and I used my personal experience growing up with lots of cats for reference. My primary inspiration was my childhood cat, Nippy, who loved to cause trouble to get what he wanted. I somewhat selfishly created the game I wanted to play, but it turns out lots of other people wanted to be a cat in a game, too! In 2014, we ran a successful Kickstarter where 2,500+ other cat lovers helped make the game a reality. Not only did they contribute funds, but a bunch of them also provided the playable cats and cat photos you see in the game. There are more than 250 photos of real cats owned by real people that you can find and collect. That has to be a world record or something, right? In any case, this is a game that is about cats, for cat people, and made by cat people. My cats, Wil & Lyn, even helped with development sometimes! (Who am I kidding? They mostly just slept and asked to be fed. Typical.) And now you can be a cat on PS4! Feel free to leave me any questions (or cat puns) in the comments. I hope you enjoy the game when it launches on March 22nd! Thanks! View the full article
  2. The year was 2013, and our then-four man team (and some amazing volunteers) at Muteki were just finishing almost two years of work on Dragon Fantasy: Book II. We had finally made the glorious 16-bit style JRPG we set out to make when we were teenagers. Only it wasn’t done. Sometimes when you pour everything you’ve got into a game for years on end until your only options are to ship or die, it’s hard to really see what you’ve got. And what we had was a good game, but it was buried under a pile of rough edges. Fast forward to 2015. Years had gone by, new jobs had been found, yet we still weren’t able to move on because we hadn’t really accomplished what we set out to do with Dragon Fantasy. The solution was clear: time to get back to work. We put in time on our nights and weekends for a year to fix the game that had been our childhood dream. We even got some help from our very good friends over at Choice Provisions where Adam (writer, designer, lead programmer, numerous other hats worn) now works! And today, I’m proud to announce that Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice will be coming to PS4 on March 22nd, 2016. Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice is best described as the director’s cut of the game previously titled Dragon Fantasy: Book II. We fixed dozens of bugs. We improved the storytelling. We re-tuned all of the battles in the game. And then we added a few new features and even a new boss fight for good measure. Do you like more of a challenge? Crank that new difficulty slider all the way up. You’ll have to pick each command carefully in battle or risk certain defeat. Prefer to breeze through the game? Turn it back down. You can do it whenever you want. Are you more of a completionist? We added a new in-game bestiary to help you track which monsters you’ve defeated and captured. Need help finishing your bounty hunts? The Thieve’s Guild has established outposts in every major town in the game to help you collect your earnings. With Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice on PS4 we’re able to finally release the game as we wanted to the first time around. And if you’re a fan of retro-JRPGs, we’re sure you’ll love it. To head off a few of the obvious questions: Is this some evil money grab to get more cash from the people that already bought the games, just to get a better version? Nope! This game will be included in the original cross buy deal, so if you bought Dragon Fantasy: Book II on PS3 or PS Vita, you get this version too. Enjoy. Why the new title? We reworked the story so that you can comfortably play through this game without ever having played previous games in the series, and wanted to make sure the game stood out on its own. Plus, it sounds cooler! Any other questions? Leave them in the comments. I’ll be around to answer them! View the full article
  3. Even in the clutches of a ceaseless winter, this planet supports life. Cat-like creatures prowl through the cold, hunting tirelessly and growling at my approach. The dunes around me are icy and dark, and the chill wind eats away at the thermal protection of my suit — paltry layers between me and a frozen death. This is one of quintillions of planets in No Man’s Sky. Some are exorbitantly beautiful. Others are cruel. And at a recent event in Los Angeles, the team at Hello Games showcased how “survival†plays a central role in this interstellar exploration. Many of you have glimpsed the awe-inspiring concept of No Man’s Sky on PS4 in its trailers. One moment you’re trekking across an alien planet, untouched by sentient life, and the next you’re aboard your trusty craft, punching through the atmosphere and breaking into the endless expanse of space. Trails of distant starships perforate your view, signs of trade and travel — or perhaps the occasional pirate looking to make a deadly score. No Man’s Sky is built on this concept of absolute freedom, but the team at Hello Games want you to feel the constant challenge of survival as you journey between stars. The planet I explored during my first play session with No Man’s Sky was one of extreme cold. Wade out into the wilderness for too long and your suit’s protections fail, your health slowly dropping until a black screen announces your untimely demise. Surviving on a planet such as this means finding shelter. Craft explosive bolts to burrow underground and you might stumble upon a network of caves to scour for resources. Or gain entry to alien pods that offer a temporary reprieve from the unrelenting wind. These structures provide a safe space for much-needed crafting, where your suit, ship, and weapon can be augmented and improved with materials from an actual periodic table of in-game elements. These elements define the universe of No Man’s Sky and can be excavated from plant life, mineral deposits, and discarded supply containers half buried in the snow. But be wary of what you take. Steal too much from a planet and the omnipresent sentinels — stewards from a bygone era — remove you from the world. Forcefully. Defeat a few of the smaller machines and larger walkers come to finish the job. Not all planets in No Man’s Sky will be uninhabited — far from it. Members of several distinct alien races will occupy these innumerable worlds, speaking in unique languages that you’ll learn over time in order to communicate and trade. Break into their planetside structures to claim resources or perhaps escape the cold. But be warned: unwelcome visitors are not regarded with kindness. Many planets are watched by alien space stations, which you can visit and use as a trading hub during your time in No Man’s Sky. Here, in the bright and cavernous docking bay, is a small room that Hello Games’ own Sean Murray picked out specifically for the event. It is, he describes, his “favorite†view in the game. In that small room is a window that looks out on the planet below. One planet, made up of a deadly cold and the life that endures there. One of many quintillions in this fictional universe that we could spend the rest of our lives exploring. View the full article

  5. When my friend JD and I first came to California, we had a dream of one day making video games together. Nearly 15 years later, our separate careers in music and video game development converged when I asked him to leave his current studio position and help me start Exploding Tuba Studios. Finally, we are excited to announce to the world our new character-driven, sci-fi action adventure game, Divide, launching on PS4 later this year. Making a Game We Wanted to PlayFrom the outset, my goal was to make a game that told a compelling story about an ordinary person thrust into extraordinary circumstances. This is the foundation of Divide. But we also wanted Divide to be an action story, and that meant combat; mechanics to play and master with risk and reward. We knew we wanted the game to call back to isometric adventure games, and the controls to borrow from dual-stick shooters. It was important for the controls to be concise and anchor your fingers to the buttons to keep every action, from shooting to interfacing with an augmented reality world, available without multitasking any given finger or thumb. Something we really enjoy about Divide is the process of discovering the story through an atmospheric dungeon crawl. Opening locked doors, breaking into long-abandoned computer systems, and rummaging through dimly lit complexes make up the bulk of the experience. The main character, David, voiced by Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do, Southland), comes from our world, and when he is swept into the momentum of the story, he knows as much as the player. New bits of story come with the shade of perspective. Is the information true? A conspiracy? Uncovering clues and revelations in the world expands the dialog options with other characters, helping the player to reach his own conclusions. Trespassing on the secrets of a powerful mega-corporation comes with serious risks. Mere exploration is often impeded by armed agents sent to investigate and apprehend the player. Given this, we still wanted to free the player from mandatory gunplay. Overrun areas can be cleared by blasting enemies with a powerful E-Laser (a high-tech standard sidearm), but they can also be circumvented with stealth and subterfuge. So… I Guess I’ll Do the Music?Everyone I’ve talked to about creating this game always remarked “So, I assume you’ll be doing the music.†I knew I was going to. It’s a savvy business decision after all, I’m the cheapest, as I don’t have to pay myself anything. Of course, I wanted to write the music, but when it came down to actually composing the score, it was a little daunting. I was constantly questioning if I was too close to the project to do all the music on my own. Early on, I wrote a lot of atmospheric electronic music, reminiscent of Vangelis (a favorite of mine). Quite a bit of that flavor stuck around, but in the end, I tried to approach it like any other project, and just give it the music I felt it needed. Divide is very special to me and everyone else on the team at Exploding Tuba. We look forward to sharing more with you all in the future! View the full article
  6. Hey, so first up, some news — because once we get talking, I’ll forget the big date: The Magic Circle: Gold Edition is coming to PS4 on May 10th. The Magic Circle is our story-driven puzzler, recently nominated by the IGF for Excellence in Narrative. It’s a dark comedy about a legendary game that has been stuck in development hell for 20 years, and only you can save it. (If you still are patiently waiting for some sequel right now, maybe it’s a bit of a tragedy, too.) The Magic Circle pokes fun at the many ways that games can go wrong, and offers you the power to solve puzzles like a game creator — by re-designing them. You play the hero of an unfinished fantasy RPG, waiting for your story to begin, and you’re getting sick of it. The fictional development team is in creative deadlock, zipping around the game world and arguing about what to change. So you set out to make the game your own, and release it from the inside… whether they like it or not. For PS4, we’ve given The Magic Circle a major engine upgrade and made improvements to lighting and AI. Our tiny team of 3.5 people — don’t ask — can’t wait to share it with you guys. Remember when you were a kid, waiting to play some hot new game for so long that you’d go half-mad with the idea of what it might be? Then, the box finally arrives, and at first, it’s everything you’d hoped. You’ve been promised paradise, and you want so badly to believe. It seems like the people who make games have magical powers. Your TV is a little, warmly-glowing window to a world those folks created, and in it they’re like gods. Now, remember the first time you saw a glitch? That certainty that something had gone wrong with the game? We do, too. It was mysterious, funny, sad — and very much worth exploring. In this story, your creators — voiced by the brilliant Ashly Burch (Borderlands 2), James Urbaniak (The Venture Brothers), Stephen Russell (Fallout 4), and Karen Dyer (Resident Evil 5) — are all too human, and they have clearly failed you. They’ve wasted so much time bickering that you have no weapons or spells, so you have to steal the powers of creation from them. The first is a tool called The Circle — it lets you trap objects and creatures, then re-mix their powers and stats to suit your purpose. As you delve deeper, restoring parts of the world that were deleted, you’re digging up lost bits of gaming history — entire versions that were scrapped. (I remember someone at PAX saying this sequence looked like a lost 1990’s PS1 game, and we were so proud!). It’s up to you to decide which creatures and powers should join your army of “pets,†and which should have stayed buried. The puzzle games we’ve played are usually all about hiding a single, perfect formula, making the game’s authors look smart. In The Magic Circle, it’s up to you to design your own solution, and there are many right answers. That pure, outsider fantasy of making games is the core of The Magic Circle. We want you to feel like a game creator — without having to quit your job and learn to code. (But if you do, hey, we’ll be here to cheer you on!) But now, back to you, as a kid. Maybe that glitch you saw was a hole in the world. Or a creature banging its head into a wall, over and over. Go ahead, you can admit it — you probably said something like “How could they not fix this? C’mon, I could do a better job than that!†Well, friends — now’s your chance. See you on May 10th. 7. Santa Monica Studio Creatives is a series focusing on four unique individuals of our family whose journey to our studio is as inspiring as their creative talents within. While their stories are candid, raw, and anything but normal, their expert crafts and collaboration within our walls hits the heart of what matters most to our studio culture — the team is everything. To learn more about this video series, please visit sms.playstation.com/creatives. Thinking back on how I decided to work with video games, I can’t really find the specific time when it happened. I look at this last generation and how they are growing up connected to technology and how my son’s generation is going to grow up even more connected. It’s almost like they’re already born knowing how to use tablets and computers. My son was already playing games with a tablet when he was 9 months. I remember playing with clay when I was a kid and being amazed by drawing, trying to copy things from magazines and television. As I grew older this was always present with me but I had no idea of having a career or having a future doing this. I remember getting my first computer and starting to use “paint†and trying to recreate drawings from paper to the computer. The Internet wasn’t really present yet so everything was a big discovery. I was also not a big gamer at that time — I remember playing classics like Mario, Alex Kid, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, Battletoads, etc., but that was a world so far, far away I had no idea how that was being made. When the internet began to evolve, I started to create websites — that’s how everything started to connect for me. I started making little flash animations, then 3D logos, finally after some time I was creating bigger things with 3D and started falling in love with it. I spent all my free time for many years and learned everything about the software. Internet was amazing! Having that 3D knowledge helped me get my first job when I was 17 with advertising. Even at that time being a hardcore gamer I still had no idea that I could pursue that as a career and that what I was doing was connected. I learned so much working with many different studios and after a couple years the software ZBrush came out — it was a mix of drawing, sculpting, and painting. Everything started to make sense to me even more. I started to create pieces for my portfolio and focus my work to become a Character Artist. After a couple of years studying and sharing my work online I started to get opportunities to work in the video game industry. I had the chance to design and create more, and it finally felt feel like I was a part of something that was always present in my life. I look back now and think about how everything happened. It’s crazy how it all came together and led me here to Santa Monica Studio. Having no access to information in the beginning was good and bad at the same time. It made the path much more difficult, but allowed me to try different things and appreciate more what I have now. Going back to the thought about this generation, having access to Internet helped me so much with my career that I can’t even think of how much it will influence the life of my kid. One thing is for sure: there will be a lot of awesome games for him to play. Battletoads being one of them. View the full article
  8. This is Marc from Drool with an update on Thumper, our rhythm violence game on PS4. In Thumper, you are a space beetle hurtling towards a maniacal giant head. The gameplay and controls are stripped-down and simple, so it’s easy to pick up and play. We’ve worked hard to make Thumper accessible and fun for both hardcore rhythm gamers and more casual action game fans. But as you delve deeper into Thumper, it won’t be easy. Our focus on simplicity lets us push the sense of speed and physicality to extremes you’ve never felt in a rhythm game before. Before you know it, you’ll be careening through an onslaught of winding tracks, obstacles, enemies, and bosses. Check out our latest trailer for a glimpse of unrelenting “rhythm hell†from one of our advanced levels. And let us know what you think! In the trailer, if you look closely, you’ll notice some new gameplay mechanics you’ll need to master. In early levels, your movement is limited to a single high-speed lane. But as the difficulty rises, you’ll slide and skitter across multiple lanes of rhythmic cues and obstacles. We’re still fine-tuning the controls and feel of multi-lane gameplay, but we’re psyched about the unique and brutal gameplay we can create with it. It’s expanded our level design palette and now we’re developing lots of new ways to kill you! Finally, Thumper is not only debuting on PS4. It’s also coming to PlayStation VR. To be honest, at first we weren’t sure whether Thumper would be a good fit for VR. We’ve spent the past few years obsessed with making Thumper the most intense two-dimensional experience possible. Wouldn’t a VR version be too intense? Well, against our better judgement, we recently got the game running on PS VR just to see. We can confirm that not only is it intense, it’s completely overwhelming! Developing for PS VR has been so exciting because Thumper’s gameplay translates perfectly and feels amazing on high frame rate display. At the same time, VR transforms the experience in ways we didn’t expect. We’ll have more to say about Thumper VR soon, but one thing is for sure: the entire game will be playable in both 2D and VR. Whether you play on a massive TV and sound system or fully immerse yourself with PlayStation VR, you’ll feel the rhythm violence when Thumper debuts later this year. View the full article
  9. We’ve got a great treat for you as we head into the final weeks of development — today, we are kicking off our five-episode behind-the-scenes series, The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The video team at PlayStation was given incredible access to our studio, game assets, and many of the people working on Uncharted 4, to craft a compelling series to cap off this final chapter for Nathan Drake. We’re calling this first episode The Evolution of a Franchise. It’s a great way to kick off this “Making of†series, as we take a brief look how Naughty Dog and the Uncharted series has evolved since Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune made its debut on PS3 in 2007, including the influence of The Last of Us on the team and our development process. Enough talk, here’s the first episode of The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The five-episode series is scheduled to be released throughout March and April, so check back to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. You’ll want to stick around for the full series — I would go so far as to say it was emotional for a few people here to watch by the time the series wrapped up. Here’s a quick rundown at the upcoming episodes: The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: The Evolution of a Franchise The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Growing up with Drake The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Pushing Technical Boundaries Part 1 The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Pushing Technical Boundaries Part 2 The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: In the End The team is still hard at work finishing up Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and we’ll be revealing more leading up to the worldwide release on May 10th, 2016. 11. Hey there PlayStation.Blog readers. This year we’re celebrating 21 years of Worms. Originally launched in 1995, Worms has long been a staple for many gamers. To mark the occasion, I’m here today to let you know that Worms W.M.D will be heading to PS4 later this year! Featuring a fresh, brand new look and gorgeous hand-drawn landscapes. The first thing I’m thrilled to tell you about in Worms W.M.D is the vehicles! Currently we have a helicopter and a tank in the game that the worms are able to use during battle. When it’s your turn, simply approach a vehicle and hop in to start using it. Take to the skies and rain down bullets on the worms below using the helicopter, or traverse across the landscape in warfare-ready tanks, which will help you get around faster, protect your worms, and fire a barrage of shots. The next big change for Worms W.M.D is the implementation of brand new buildings. Previously in Worms, the landscape in the 2D entries has been a flat texture to play across. Now we’re introducing buildings, which are really awesome and offer a great tactical advantage — especially in online games! You can enter a building and fire off shots from inside, but when the turn passes, your worm will be hidden inside. The game is looking beautiful so far and a lot of that is down to the improved landscape generator. In past games, players would battle across randomly generated landscapes that had a texture applied and then a fringe layer of grass etc. over the top. We’ve been working hard to improve the landscape generator so that now we are able to have individually drawn landscape pieces that the generator knows how to place together to make fun, unique maps to play on. They look brilliant. As always, you can definitely expect solid single-player modes and crazy local and online multiplayer for you to wreak havoc in. All with that essential feel of the classic Worms experience but with beautiful, modern new additions that really add to the gameplay. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this post. We’ve still got a lot more to reveal about Worms W.M.D so please do stay tuned. We can’t wait to launch the game on PS4 later this year, and we hope to play against/with you online! 12. There is a feeling that I remember from when I was a kid playing video games: the huge, intense satisfaction when I finally beat a level or a boss I had been struggling with for a while. The feeling of learning how to overcome a challenge, with my brain and my thumbs. The combination of understanding and execution felt like a reward in itself. I remember it from games like Super Punch Out, bosses from Metal Gear Solid, combat in God Hand. There are many games that gave me that feeling, but recently I’ve felt that games try too hard to be “user friendly.†Adaptive difficulty, dynamic checkpoints, in-game tips… Everything is explained and balanced to make sure nobody drops out. With Furi, we want to give the player an extreme satisfaction when he or she beats a boss. That means he or she will have to sweat a little for it. Furi is heavily inspired by the Japanese way of making games. It’s not trying to be realistic in its style or animations. It’s fast-paced and requires a lot of timing, reflex, and judgment. When you press a button, the character reacts immediately. It’s part of what makes it “fair.†Too often in modern games, we press a button and then, in order to make the game look realistic, the character will start an animation that “looks good†but “feels heavy,†and is unresponsive, even laggy. Responsive controls feel good and are a must-have in a combat game. The gameplay in Furi is the essence of the catchphrase “easy to learn, hard to master.†There are very few buttons to press or abilities to remember. You can slash with your sword, shoot with your gun, dodge, and parry. That’s about it. You can charge the slash attack, the gunshot, and the dodge. It’ll result in a more powerful slash that stuns the opponent, a more powerful gunshot that knocks him or her down, and a longer dodge. But once you’ve got that, you can play Furi. It’s like a guitar: it has six strings, but you need practice to play it correctly. And there’s no limit to how much you can improve. It’s simple and deep. The challenges are mostly based on a simple formula: be warned, react, punish. Dodge a laser. Parry a sword attack. Wait for the weakness in your opponent’s posture, and bam, punish. The real depth in the gameplay comes from the differences between the bosses. It’s not about learning tons of combos to beat the next boss, it’s about how you play a few moves differently to beat a different opponent. Some bosses, or “guardians,†will focus more on shooting. Others will challenge mostly your sword fighting. Some opponents are deadly and will knock you down in two or three hits. Some fights will require a lot of focus over a long time. A fight can last 10 minutes or 90 minutes depending on how you play. And of course, each guardian in the game has one or two special tricks, weapons, or abilities that make him or her unique. In our latest trailer we’re showing one of the fiercest guardians. She is a tactician, a hunter, a playful mercenary who doesn’t leave anything to chance. She has planned her fight and has weapons to help her win: drones, a laser sniper rifle, great camouflage, and she can even control every bit of the arena she fights in, raising cover and blocking paths. At first, she’ll hunt you, hidden in her maze, shooting at you while you are distracted by her cyber-bees. You will have to find her, and attack her before she relocates. You’ll get to face her for a while if you can do that, but that’s still playing into her hand. In order to take her out of her comfort zone, you’ll have to follow her into her nest, in the center of the maze, and knock her out once or twice. Once this is done, she’ll get pissed off and she’ll keep sniping at you while you have to dodge waves of bullets coming fast. Eventually, the final challenge is to fight her hand to hand… while she is invisible! This requires sharp reflexes and focus. I recommend taking a break after beating her. Because I know the guardian that comes after! We’re interested in hearing your feedback. Let us know what you think and if you have questions. View the full article
  13. 15. Hello friends, my name is David OReilly. I’m an artist based in Los Angeles and am from a town called Kilkenny in Ireland. Some of you might be familiar with my films, most of which are short or very short, and more might be familiar with the video game sequences I created in the movie Her. Mostly I am concerned with the medium of 3D and it’s effect on our brains. I have been working on a new project for a long time with some very talented people, and I’m excited about sharing it with you today. In Everything, every single thing is a playable character; if you can see it, you can be it. The game lets you see the entire universe from the point of view of the thousands of things in it. In other words, there is no distinction between you and the world, or between a level and a character. All these things experience and interact with the world differently. Everything lets you be anything you want. If you ever wanted to see what it’s like to be a horse, or a paperclip, or the sun, this is for you. Your main power in the game is Being (there are more but I won’t ruin the surprise). This very simple idea has involved years of research and development, as virtually all game engines expect a lot of things to be static and non interactive. I should mention that I’m still quite new to this, and though I was very excited about this idea, I had no clue how backwards it was or how much work it would be. Together with Damien DiFede (who writes all of the code) we developed an entirely new way to create and design levels, which treat objects more like ecosystems, and slightly closer to how they would be in nature. Everything is a game about the things we see, their relationships, and their points of view. In this context, things are how we separate reality so we can understand it and talk about it with each other. It sounds obvious, but people have been arguing about what things are since the dawn of time. This was the subject of my last game Mountain, and Everything explores this idea and more in much greater depth, and in a much more fun way. Everything is launching exclusively on PS4 in the future (As soon as we finish it!). View the full article
  16. Hi everyone! I’m very excited to announce the inaugural lineup for a new PlayStation Store event called Launch Party. One of the best perks about being on the PlayStation Store team is that we get to work very closely with both first and third party studio teams on previewing upcoming releases. Launch Party is a celebration of our favorite digital games releasing this spring – selected in collaboration with our colleagues on both the 1st and 3rd party teams. Some of you may remember our yearly Spring Fever campaign, which we’re retiring in name only. We’ll still have great weekly deals on games and movies from your favorite blockbuster franchises (In fact, you can check out this year’s franchise sale lineup right here!), but we really wanted to let the new games have the spotlight with their own event. Pre-order any Launch Party title from PlayStation Store and not only will you be able to pre-load and play them right when they release, but you’ll also get 10% off. Note: Pre-orders for the Launch Party lineup are currently in the process of going live on PlayStation Store — if one isn’t working for you yet give it a few minutes! As Andy said, we’ve been working closely together for months to put together an amazing Launch Party lineup for you, featuring some of the digital games we’ve been most looking forward to. Here’s a bit of background on each, and why you should lock in those pre-order discounts now! Salt and Sanctuary We’ve admired Ska Studios’ games from afar for years, and we’re so thrilled to have their latest masterpiece debut exclusively on PS4! If you’ve enjoyed games like Bloodborne or Dark Souls you’ll feel right at home in Salt and Sanctuary’s brutal but beautiful world (brutiful?). Deep combat and rich RPG elements, all set in a cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, and desecrated monuments. What else could you want? *Note: Salt and Sanctuary is still in development for PS Vita, and will be cross-buy with PS4 when it’s released Day of the Tentacle Remastered We’re so excited to be working with Double Fine on bringing another classic LucasArts adventure to PS4, after their fantastic work on Grim Fandango. Originally released in 1993, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travelling, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world! This loving remaster features all-new, hand-drawn, high-resolution artwork, with remastered music and sound effects. Enter the Gungeon Enter the Gungeon is the latest in our ongoing partnership (more of a kinship, really) with Devolver Digital, developed by the devious geniuses at Dodge Roll. Making its console debut on PS4, Gungeon combines The Binding of Isaac-style dungeons with an action-packed repertoire of shooting, looting, dodge-rolling, and table-flipping (and two-player local co-op!). All on a quest to reach the ultimate treasure: a gun that can kill the past! (Of course.) Stories: The Path of Destinies Spearhead Games was one of the very first developers to jump on the PS4 train with their underrated multiplayer puzzler Tiny Brains. They’ve been working hard ever since on a sumptuous action-RPG called Stories: The Path of Destinies, a madcap epic fantasy where each choice you make takes you through a different story. Each story — some dark, some romantic, all action-packed — is true in its way, and will lead you to victory if you pay enough attention… Invisible, Inc. If you’re anything like us, you’re still playing Klei Entertainment’s singular PS4 survival sim Don’t Starve, over two years later. Invisible, Inc. is a very different beast, but similarly applies Klei’s whip-smart design prowess and beautifully stylized aesthetic to a tactical turn-based adventure. Take control of Invisible’s agents in the field and infiltrate the world’s most dangerous corporations. Stealth, precision, and teamwork are essential in high-stakes, high-profit missions, where every move may cost an agent their life. Alienation If you’ve ever played Super Stardust, Resogun, or Dead Nation, you know the visceral pleasures Housemarque is capable of. They’ve collaborated with SCE Worldwide Studios on another amazing PS4 exclusive, where 1-4 players can team up online against alien hoards with an array of conventional and hybrid weaponry. All taking place in massively destructible environments where collateral damage can literally bring the house down! View the full article
  17. Hey baseball fans. I’m Lance Leahy, one of the game designers at San Diego Studio. I wanted to give everyone a rundown of two brand new game modes coming to MLB The Show this year. Diamond Dynasty exploded last year and is quickly becoming one of the most popular modes in the franchise. In The Show 16, players will have more ways than ever to play America’s pastime with the introduction of Battle Royale and Conquest game modes. Battle Royale is the most challenging and competitive game mode Diamond Dynasty has ever seen. In this player-versus-player experience, you’ll be challenged to draft a team and outlast opponents in a double-elimination tournament to acquire unique rewards. Conquest is like a classic turn-based strategy game that pits you against the 30 MLB teams on a map of North America. You’ll be tasked with the challenge of defeating MLB teams and conquering territories in order to complete specific missions that contain team-specific rewards. Be sure to join us this Thursday on the San Diego Studio Twitch channel to get an exclusive, deep dive tour covering Battle Royale and Conquest. If you have any questions about either of these features, feel free to ask them in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to address your questions at the end of next week’s livestream. And don’t forget, PS4 pre-orders for MLB The Show 16 are now live. Check out the MVP, Standard Edition, and bonus items right here! In the meantime, we’ll be sending out news and updates at The Show Nation. View the full article
  18. Tom Clancy’s The Division launches on PS4 on March 8th, 2016… that’s tomorrow! Set in a representation of New York ravaged by a biological attack, Ubisoft Massive’s third-person, cover-based shooter features a heavy emphasis on player progression, loot collection, and social interaction. Having played the recent open beta of The Division, we had lots of questions for the team behind this ambitious new project. We got in touch with Martin Hultberg, IP Director from Ubisoft Massive, to learn more. Tom Clancy’s The Division | PlayStation.com PlayStation.Blog: The Division is a huge project with a lot going on — how would you describe it in a single sentence? Martin Hultberg: A highly immersive and social open world RPG-shooter set in the most realistically recreated New York ever, where a deadly pandemic has brought the city to the edge of collapse and even your best friend can become your worst enemy. “We see The Division as the start of something bigger than just the initial release.†PSB: Loot-based shooters are becoming more and more popular. What’s your approach to the loot system in The Division? MH: We have separated them between two types of loot; equipment and cosmetic items. Equipment, like weapons and gear, affects the stats and power of your character. Cosmetic items allow you to create a unique character of your own. Being a shooter, weapons are of course important and they can be fitted with mods and skins to further enhance or change both performance and appearance. PSB: Are you building The Division as a long-term experience? Will players have reasons to keep playing after finishing the main campaign? MH: We see The Division as the start of something bigger than just the initial release as we have extensive plans for updates and DLC. Our goal is to create a universe we can expand on, together with the fans who play it. PSB: The Dark Zone is an interesting social experience. At what point during development was it implemented, and what is its role in The Division’s overall ecosystem? MH: The Dark Zone concept has always been at the heart of the game. It is a social experience, with everything from casual social spaces, to cooperative group play and the risk of adversarial encounters in the Dark Zone. The idea is to create a very dynamic and tense situation with high risk and high reward; something that will resonate with players who want to explore, look for loot or fight other people. PSB: What has the team learned as a result of the recent open beta? Have any significant changes been made as a result of player feedback? MH: I think we learned a lot. We found some issues we hadn’t seen before, got confirmation on how people acted with features like the Dark Zone, and had a chance to do loads of optimization and bug fixes. This is what betas are good for and we got a great deal out of them. PSB: What was the team’s goal when designing and implementing Proximity Chat? It certainly leads to some tense situations. MH: Exactly that! Communication is key and we have always tried to get this into our games. It is a perfect fit for the Dark Zone where we want to create tension, suspense and fragile teamwork. “We’ve taken some liberties in recreating New York, but it is quite close.†PSB: How 1:1 is the architecture and layout of The Division’s New York to the real-life city? MH: We’ve taken some liberties in recreating New York, but it is quite close. It isn’t just about the size, but the detailed recreation of everything from graffiti to certain buildings. It really feels like New York as you walk through it. PSB: The Division excels as a multiplayer experience. Is it designed primarily around social interaction, or will players be able to fly through the game solo without feeling like they’re missing too much? MH: You can play it alone, for sure! There are many systems that encourage and try to tease that social experience of playing with or against others, but if you don’t want that then the game has a full single-player experience as well. 19. Hi PlayStation.Blog! I’m Jeff Kaplan from the Overwatch development team, and I’m happy to let everyone know that Overwatch will be launching May 24th on PS4! As an added bonus, if you pre-purchase Overwatch, you’ll get early access to the Beta for you and a friend from May 3rd to May 4th. After that, everyone will have a chance to play free during our Open Beta from May 5th to May 9th. What is Overwatch?Overwatch is a team-based, multiplayer shooter featuring a cast of 21 dynamic heroes. Taking place on a near-future Earth, Overwatch gives players the ability to bend time, defy physics, and unleash over-the-top powers and weapons. Teams compete in six-on-six, objective-based maps set across the world — you’ll be protecting an ancient temple in Egypt, escorting an EMP device through King’s Row in London, battling for control of Lijiang Tower in China, and more. Switching heroes on the fly is key to countering your opponents and to gaining the upper hand in battle. Why Open Beta and Early Access? We know how important and meaningful it can be to try out a game before buying it. We also want to make sure you get a really good sense of what the full game will be like, so we’re making all 21 heroes and all maps and game modes available in the Open Beta — that way you can really start to get a handle on the game’s central concepts, like roles, counters, and hero-switching, in a variety of different map types. The early access portion of the Open Beta is our small way of thanking players who’ve invested in Overwatch early. Your belief in the game means a lot to us. If you’d like to support Overwatch, you can pre-purchase now to get early access to the Open Beta. Thanks, we can’t wait for you to join us soon. View the full article
  20. The wait is over. Time to annihilate some aliens. Pang Adventures hits PS4 on April 19th! A Classic Arcade Game…If you’re not familiar with the Pang series, either you’re too young or you’re not hanging out in enough arcades! It’s one of the most popular games from the 90’s, a game in which players guide two brothers on a global quest to save humankind from a massive alien invasion. And believe me, these villains didn’t come here for the sightseeing! …Back with a Brand New Episode! We. Are. So. Excited! Pang Adventures is DotEmu’s first PS4 game, and we’re proud to have teamed up with the folks at Pastagames (Pix the Cat) to create a new episode for this beloved series. We’re equally proud to receive the blessing of Mitchell Corporation, the original game’s developers. We worked really hard to infuse Pang Adventures with new ideas while staying true to the series’ original spirit. The result is a great balance between the traditional gameplay we loved in the good old days and some fresh mechanics. This new adventure debuts never-before-seen features like unique attack ball types, epic boss fights, and amazing new weapons! As you can see, the Pang Bros. have upgraded their gear since the last alien invasion. Machine guns, flamethrowers, lasers, shurikens… you name it, they have it! Tap into this awesome arsenal and defeat the attack balls pouring down from the skies! Adventures Are Best SharedCooperation is a proven strategy for defeating bad guys, and this game’s couch co-op feature is tons of fun. Team up with friends and family to develop a successful strategy for saving the world! Easy to Play, Hard to MasterAs my grandpappy likes to say, “The simplest recipes make the best cookies†— and Pang Adventures is a delicious treat specifically designed to please your gaming taste buds again and again. We’ll see you next month on the leaderboards! View the full article
  21. Today we’re thrilled to tell players that Sniper Elite 4 is coming to PS4 this year. What you’ll want to know, of course, is what makes Sniper Elite 4 special, whether you’re a sharpshooting veteran or a rookie looking to get their teeth into a new third-person stealth action game — especially now that it’s the first in the series to be developed from the ground up for PS4. I thought it might be nice to reveal a few secrets from the teaser trailer to get the juices flowing. Enjoy! 1943Why is that opening date so important? Well, it places the game firmly in World War II of course, but there’s more to it than that. Sniper Elite 4 is set in Italy in the direct aftermath of the North African conflict seen in Sniper Elite 3, and Fascism’s grip on the Mediterranean is slipping. Enter covert agent and series stalwart Karl Fairburne, dropped onto the Italian peninsula in advance of the Allied invasion. What starts out as an assassination mission quickly turns into a race to uncover a conspiracy that could end Allied hopes of retaking the continent for good… A Country DividedThe opening scenes of the trailer show a town caught in the midst of war, civilian belongings strewn across a usually sleepy market square. We really wanted to mix picture-postcard imagery with the creeping dread of something more sinister because this is what makes the Italian conflict so interesting. There were lots of factions fighting for the future of the country, and these play an important part in both the narrative and the gameplay! Gigantic Sniper SandboxesThat opening vista with all those iconic, red, Mediterranean rooftops? That’s just a small part of a beautiful coastal town which makes up just one region in one of the game’s earliest levels. Phew! Each campaign level is absolutely huge — many times bigger than those seen in Sniper Elite 3, and they already took hours to complete! Just to stress, the footage isn’t pre-rendered or taken from cutscenes. What you’re seeing in the trailer is taken from environments you’ll actually be playing in. That Rail(way) Gun!Did you spot Karl right at the end? Well done if you did — he’s definitely dwarfed by his surroundings! No doubt your eye was drawn to the huge viaduct in the distant background, too. Just like the earlier shots, this isn’t just set dressing, it’s taken from a real level and players actually have to get to the viaduct and then intercept that imposing railway gun. Whether you leave the viaduct still standing is, of course, up to you and your explosives. We hope that’s whet your appetite for more stealthy sniping action. Look out for more news soon! 22. Deep in the electro-abyss lives a little robot who loves to eat exploding fruit. He also quite likes staying alive. That’s where you come in… Hey gang! Mike and Charlie here from Infinite State Games. We’re proud to announce that our cult PS Vita arcade game Don’t Die, Mr. Robot! launches tomorrow on PS4! The PS4 version has a lot of tweaks and improvements, too. We’ve pumped up the visuals to target a silky smooth 60 frames per second with full HD. We’ve tweaked the soundtrack so it sounds even more rad on a big screen. We’ve massaged the controls to perfection, and we’ll be bathing your lap with technicolour neon glowy goodness emanating from the DualShock 4 lightbar. Who doesn’t want a glowing lap plus manic bullet-dodging good times, eh? It’s cross buy too, so you’ll get the PS Vita version for free if you don’t already have it. Oh, and we’ve made it a super affordable price that means anyone can get into an exploding fruit trance without breaking the bank. Don’t Die, Mr. Robot! on PS4 has all this, plus the hot game modes that made the PS Vita version a fan favorite: The brutally addictive Arcade Mode brings arcade glory into your living room with a compulsive death drop into the fruity electro-abyss. The intense Score Attack mode that gives you two and a half minutes to push the scoring mechanism to its limits, or to die loads and do real badly. It’s up to you! The misleadingly named Chill Out mode, which is far from relaxing at all. (Sorry, we just thought it would be really funny.) Remix Mode, which gives you 50 missions of mixed-up rules and gameplay variations. Each game mode shares leaderboards with the PS Vita version so if you don’t manage to get top score at home, you can keep your streak by playing on the go. There are loads of other surprises in store too, so turn your TV up loud, get your controller ready, and dive headfirst into some good ol’ bullet dodging action! We’ve had a huge amount of fun making Don’t Die, Mr. Robot! on PS4 and we really hope you guys out there get a kick out of it when it hits the store tomorrow! <3 Mike & Charlie (Infinite State Games) View the full article

  25. We’re celebrating! 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved Wonder Boy series, which started with a simple but solid Arcade game developed by Escape (later known as Westone). The last game in the series was Monster World IV (1994) and it went silent for more than 20 years. Have you heard of it? The Return of a LegendWe’re so excited to say that we’ve been able to team up with the series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa (former Westone) and revive it with our new game Monster Boy, which launches on PS4 this year. As a fan of the classic games and the Metroidvania genre, it felt unreal to be able to work on a new game that brings back the spirit of the series in every way possible. We loved Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap for its transformation feature, so we took it as the biggest inspiration. Monster Boy continues the colorful, side-scrolling adventure tradition with a character who can transform into different animal forms to solve puzzles and proceed in a connected (open) game world. More Than a Spiritual SuccessorWith the help of Ryuichi Nishizawa and LAT corporation licensing, we’ve gained access to the whole library of characters, graphics assets, sounds, and music from the entire Wonder Boy series. While we’re creating a new experience targeting 1080p at 60 frames per second with hi-res 2D visuals, we’re happily bringing back our favorite monsters, music tracks, and features of the classic games. We’re working hard to deliver a game that you will be able to fully enjoy as a fan of the series but also if you never heard of it. OMG! Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru YamaneWhen we started the game production two years ago, we would’ve never believed we would be able to work with many personal childhood music heroes from Japan — we contacted them anyway and to our surprise they joined the team! The music production is led by Yuzo Koshiro himself, who is most famous for his music in Streets of Rage, Actraiser, Shinobi, and Ys. Furthermore, we worked with Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru Yamane, Keiki Kobayashi, Takeshi Yanagawa, and singer Haruka Shimotsuki. We believe music is so important for a great experience. There are a lot of original tracks in Monster Boy, but we also re-arranged the most famous music tracks of the classic series. Last but not least, music tracks get their finishing touches by a real instrument recording session. It’s so cool. We Can’t Wait to Share Monster Boy With YouWe’re planning to finish the game production in Q2 this year — please stay tuned for an exact release date in 2016. Will you celebrate with us?
