  1. When my brother, Anatole, and I first hatched the plan to make a game independently, we never imagined where it would take us. We started off thinking about the kinds of games we grew up with and how much fun playing games together has always been. We love old-school action-platformers and games that let you experiment creatively with how you solve problems, so combining those ideas was essential. It’s fair to say we’re influenced by classics like Chaos, Lemmings, Worms, Gears, and Little Big Planet, but we wanted to push it further with totally destructible environments and fluid dynamics. What came from that vision is our debut title, Organic Panic, which we’re beyond excited to announce is coming to PS4 this March! Organic Panic is a physics-based puzzle-platformer that pits the main food groups against each other in a chaotically fun and lighthearted battle royale extravaganza! What brings all the madness together is the incredible D.A.F.T. (Destructible and Fluid Technology) Engine. Anything goes, because nearly every environmental element (characters, platforms, enemies, weapons, etc.) can be controlled and manipulated in some clever way. Earth can be smashed through, wood floats and burns, lightning conducts, ice slips and melts, water flows and douses fire, rubber bounces, acid disintegrates, and the list goes on! Basically you’re left to your own devices as to how to use all the powers and physics at your disposal. It’s a seriously big game with more than 200 highly refined and totally destructible levels of action and puzzles, but we keep it fresh with new worlds and game modes to explore. The single-player quest is driven by a comedic story, but we’ve also got local couch co-op and versus modes for up to four! The controls are straightforward enough that you can easily pull newcomers in, but there are still enough tools for hardcore players to discover their own unique strategies to go for gold on the leaderboards. We’ve had quite the adventure with Organic Panic, from our successful Kickstarter to shows like PAX Prime, PAX East, and IndieCade. We’ll be at PAX East with the game again this year, so feel free to drop by to say hi or play a quick match — we’ve got lots of freebies left over from our Kickstarter to dish out! Watching people play the final product is always so cool for us. We designed most of the levels with multiple ways to solve them, so we still see people figure things out in ways we hadn’t even imagined. I watch my son play it and he rips through them in crazy ways (he’s 6 now, though he’s been testing the game for 3 years already — child services should have really been knocking at my door a long time ago for that much labor!). This type of genuine freedom to brainstorm your own solution to any problem is the backbone of Organic Panic, and it’s why we can’t wait to get the final product in your hands. You can join the food fight when Organic Panic arrives on PlayStation Store for PS4 in March! View the full article

  4. Welcome to the world of Dangerous Golf, a game coming to PS4 this May. I’m Fiona Sperry and I co-founded Three Fields Entertainment with partners Alex Ward and Paul Ross in February 2014. We’re a small, independent British studio comprised of veteran developers from Criterion Games, Ubisoft, and Disney. We’re no strangers to blockbuster games having worked on the entire Burnout series, Black, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit over the past fifteen years. Our small but extremely talented development team has more than 150 years in game development experience. For our first title, we wanted to make a wild, physics-powered experience that harnesses the gameplay, technology, and power of PS4. We also wanted to focus on what we do best — which is making fast, fun, and spectacular arcade style games. Dangerous Golf is just that. It’s as serious a true golf game as Burnout was a serious simulation of real driving. We wanted to see what would happen if we mixed the attitude of Burnout with the destruction of Black whilst powering up a golf ball and setting it on fire — a clear nod to NBA Jam, one of my all-time favorite games. This type of fast gameplay has always been part of our DNA and it’s something we hope you’ll enjoy playing. In Dangerous Golf, you’re not striving for Par or aiming for a Birdie — you’re playing for points awarded for causing damage. It’s about smashing the place up and then banging the ball into the hole by pulling off an outrageous trick shot. Break enough stuff and you can power up the ball, turn it into a fireball, and steer it around for a limited time to try and smash more stuff. There are more than 100 holes to attack in a series of indoor and outdoor locations. Make a huge mess in a hotel kitchen, destroy a glittering palace ballroom, or even set fire to a rural gas station — the choice is yours. Despite the fact that Dangerous Golf is a fun and silly game, it has a serious technical edge. We’ve been working closely with the guys in Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 team and Nvidia to deliver a truly physics-driven game. We’re a small indie team but we’ve got big ambitions. We like to shatter expectations, bring silliness and joy back to game development, and have a lot of fun in the process. Get ready to play dangerously this May! View the full article
  5. Hi, PlayStation Nation! My name is Alex Monney and I’m the communications manager for Perfect World Entertainment. Our team here at PWE and friends over at Tuque Games are thrilled to unveil Livelock, launching on PS4 this year. Livelock is a fast-paced, cooperative, top-down shooter based in a post-human world where machines are waging an infinite war against each other. Livelock takes place in the 22nd century following a catastrophic gamma ray burst that wipes humanity out. The world has now been taken over by Rogue Clusters — groups of mechanized armies that have taken over control of different territories following the corruption of their data and are waging war against each other. In order to prevent this, SATCOM, a highly sophisticated satellite Super A.I., is awakening backups of human consciousness known as Capital Intellects, who have been inserted into large machines built by humans before the gamma ray burst. When thinking about Livelock, our teams looked to create something that brought us back to the fun and camaraderie of the arcade days. A game that presents a challenge for even those experienced video game players. While you’ll have a variety of tools to succeed at your disposal, refining your abilities, thinking tactically, and working cooperatively are the only ways to overcome some of our most challenging content. Think less of a bullet hell top-down shooter and more about overcoming overwhelming odds. With our announcement today, we are also revealing our first of three playable characters — Hex. Prior to a catastrophic gamma ray burst in the 22nd century, Hex was a renowned e-sports professional who became feared by many as he honed his craft. He was also one of the first to participate in a risky experiment to upload his consciousness to a database, which was later uploaded to a machine by SATCOM following the catastrophe. We’ll have a lot more more Livelock to show as we build towards launch including the announcements for our other two Capital Intellects. View the full article
  6. Hello all, I’m Kevin from DreamSail Games and I’m excited to announce that our studio’s first game, Blade Ballet, is coming to PS4 this Spring. Take a look at our trailer to see our four-player, whirling robot deathmatch in action. Blade Ballet indulges your heart’s deepest, hidden desire of controlling adorable robots as they spin, slash, and stab each other to bits. Each bot taps into a unique slice of our team’s crazy ideas about futuristic combat. Sneaky cheaters bypass shields. Demolitions experts bent on destruction hurl explosives across the screen. And my personal favorite smashes its competitors with a giant wrecking ball. The battle arenas are even more insane than the bots. Crush your friends on indoor ski slopes while dodging robo-trees and surprisingly dangerous cardboard cutouts of humans. Battle in an AI storage core and use giant push-button lasers to obliterate each other. Master each level’s mechanics to emerge from brawls victorious. Humble BeginningsBlade Ballet didn’t start out as a “real†game. One night at PAX Prime, our programming team made a quick demo of two cubes that could move and spin, possessing swords and the ability to destroy each other. We ended up playing that little prototype for hours, satisfied by the graceful kills we executed even as awkward little cubes. When we got back to the studio after PAX, we decided to spend some time building out the concept and eventually put it into full production. Five months later, we’re thrilled to be nearing the finish line. What the Future HoldsWe made this game with brawler multiplayer in our hearts. All of us here at DreamSail have fond memories of smacking controllers out of our friends’ hands and taunting them with our real-life victory dances, and we’re excited for Blade Ballet to create even more of those moments. PlayStation has shown great support for indie multiplayer fighting games on PS4, and we’re proud to be in good company. DreamSail is invested in building a community to bring people together to play great multiplayer games. We’re also excited to take our game beyond the couch, and are hard at work putting together an online mode. We have way too many ideas for bots and arenas to get them all in before launch, so we will be supporting Blade Ballet with content for months to come. These bots and arenas will be included with the original game, so don’t worry about going over to a friend’s house and not having a full roster. We’re cramming tons of stuff into the game over the next few months, so follow our development and let us know what you think. At DreamSail Games, we care most about multiplayer experiences and creating games that are best played with others. We think our bot bash battler is a great way to introduce you to what we have to offer. Look for Blade Ballet this Spring on PS4, and thanks from all of us at DreamSail for reading! 7. The Witness is out now. I’ve played and finished Jonathan Blow’s eight-year opus (twice!), but I still haven’t discovered all of its deepest secrets. I’d advise anyone playing The Witness to go in as blind as possible, but having become relatively knowledgeable about the game I’ve come up with six pieces of advice I’d like to share with you. These tips will not spoil anything about the game’s story, locations, mechanics or secrets. Rather, they’re simply things I wish I had known when I first started playing. Enjoy! The Witness | PlayStation Store 1. Stock up on graph paperYou’re gonna need it. Sure, you might be able to solve most of The Witness’ puzzles in your head, or by workshopping ideas directly on the panel you’re working on, but there are a number of challenges that will be very, very difficult to solve without a pen and paper for anyone with an IQ under 150. 2. Use that Share buttonBuilding off the last point, there are lots of things you’re going to see in The Witness whose function may not be immediately apparent. As luck would have it, PS4 has a built-in screenshot button! Take lots of notes, not only with that graph paper I mentioned above but in the form of visual reminders you can refer back to when you inevitably experience one of those “wait a minute…†moments. 3. Play with headphones(Or a very good sound system.) There may be no music in The Witness, but its sound design is some of the best in the business. Not only does the game’s already-impressive sense of isolation really kick in when you’re enveloped by its top-notch ambience, certain sounds are subtle enough that you won’t even notice them without a nice, loud setup. 4. Don’t overthink itWhen I found myself struggling with a particular puzzle in The Witness, all too often it was a simple case of assuming the solution was going to be more complex than it ended up being. Think back to what you’ve discovered that area’s ruleset to be and try to attack it from different angles, rather than falling into the trap of continually elaborating on an assumed solution that just doesn’t seem to be cutting it. That said, some of these puzzles are merciless, which leads me to my next point… 5. Don’t be afraid to walk away…You’re going to get stuck. I promise. The difference here is that getting stuck in The Witness is okay, maybe even intended by its creators. Thankfully, since you have instant access to most of the island right from the get-go, you’re never trapped in any sort of linear progression system. Feel free to give up on a particularly challenging puzzle and explore elsewhere for a while — chances are something you do somewhere else will make that missing solution *click* into place. If all else fails, simply coming back to it with a set of fresh eyes will likely help. Finally, you don’t need to complete every puzzle in the game to reach its conclusion, so if one’s got you well and truly stumped, don’t feel like you’re reached a dead end. 6. … But don’t give upThis one’s going to be tough, but please do everything you can to avoid spoilers for The Witness, including solutions to puzzles or explanations of mechanics. So much of The Witness’ magic lies in the sense of discovery and accomplishment that you experience when finding a new area, solving a puzzle you thought for sure was impossible, or finally activating one of those weird laser beam things. Like I said before, you’re going to get stuck. You’re going to want to look up the answer, “maybe just for this one puzzle†to keep things moving along. Don’t do it. You’re only going to be able to experience The Witness for the first time once. View the full article
  8. I get to be Donatello. At some point, every hardcore TMNT fan picks a favorite. It’s not a selection that we take lightly, and maybe that’s because we know that our Turtle will become something of a lifelong friend. So, we carefully weigh each character’s pros and cons and make our choice based on the Turtle that resonates with our own personality. It might not be a conscious decision, but very few TMNT fans waver after making their initial selection. Myself? I’m usually more of a “Mikey†kind of guy, but Donnie has the coolest moves. So, if you and I ever play the co-op mode in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, I get to be Donnie. I called him first. Before we play, though, you’ll need to select a Turtle. Leonardo’s katanas make him the most well rounded character, thanks to his medium-ranged reach and moderate attack speed. Raphael, on the other hand, is a little bit slower, but he’s a powerhouse. And even though Mikey’s nunchucks limit his strike zone, his attacks are the speediest of the bunch. And Donatello? His staff gives him the longest reach; so I’ll handle the ranged attacks. If you’ve ever played a title from PlatinumGames, you’ll feel right at home with this one. The combat is fast-paced, silky smooth, and customizable. Each Turtle’s distinctive fighting style compliments the others’ during an online co-op campaign, but you’ll need to select your teammates carefully. Co-op games require constant communication and collaboration, so you probably shouldn’t partner up with that friend who doesn’t reply to text messages for weeks at a time. Fans of the comic book series will definitely be familiar with the game’s art. PlatinumGames’ took a lot of inspiration from TMNT artist Mateus Santolouco, combining his distinctive style with their signature visuals, animations, and combat. Also, did I mention Bebop and Rocksteady? Shredder’s long-time accomplices are making their way back to the video game realm, along with a slew of other iconic enemies. And, for the record, the boss fights are crazy. Every boss has a collection of specialized maneuvers and weapons, forcing players to devise a unique plan of attack and adjusting that plan when everything goes wrong. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan is the game that the fanatics have been salivating for. And I can say that with confidence, because I haven’t stopped drooling since starting the project. We’re anticipating a Summer 2016 release on PS4 and PS3. Which Turtle will you choose? 9. Hi everyone! If all has gone well, then right now as you read this (or else very soon from now!) you can download The Witness on PlayStation Store. It’s been a long road to get here and we have worked very hard to make the best game we can. It is the best thing I have ever worked on, and being able to put it out in the world, it’s a good feeling. Reviews have started coming in already and they are very good! If you haven’t heard of the game before now (or have heard of it but don’t know what it is or why it’s interesting!), and think you might enjoy a game where you explore an abandoned island and solve puzzles, go ahead and check out a few reviews. But if you are already interested in the game, I would encourage you to stay away from reviews, because some parts of the game are *very* spoilable. You’ll have the best experience if you start completely in the dark. The Witness | PlayStation Store I want to thank everyone at Sony who gave us so much support over the past few years. It was a very unusual step at the time for Sony to invite an independent developer like us to their console launch announcement — as far as I know, it was unprecedented — and it was a nice experience for us, and it probably helped a lot of new people find out about the game. Since then Sony has hosted us at E3 and PSX several times, and helped us in many ways when it came to building the best game we could for the PlayStation 4. Lastly, I want to thank everyone out there who has supported the game, just by being interested in it — whether you enjoyed my previous game, Braid, or found out about The Witness in some other way. And I would like to thank the players who are about to have a very interesting time with the game and don’t even know it yet! I take the practice of game design very seriously. When I sit down to design a game I work very hard for a long time to make it good. And I can only do that — and build that game with talented people — because of the support of all the players out there who are looking for new and boundary-pushing experiences. Thank you! -Jonathan View the full article
  10. Today I’m pleased to share an important new moment in PlayStation history that will power the next 20 years of PlayStation innovation. We are announcing the formation of a new company called Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE) that will serve as the headquarters for everything PlayStation. This new company, headquartered out of the United States in San Mateo, California, joins the forces of both Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Sony Network Entertainment LLC, combining the strengths and talents of both companies. The formation of SIE will create an even stronger PlayStation. That means an even bigger emphasis on developing pioneering platforms like PS4 and PlayStation VR, world-class games from our Worldwide Studios development teams, and innovative network services such as PlayStation Vue. It also means a renewed commitment to making PlayStation the best place to play. Thank you for joining us on this important step in PlayStation history. And as always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support and feedback. We’re excited to undertake this next step in PlayStation history with you! View the full article
  11. Hi! I’m Steve Bowler, lead designer on Gemini: Heroes Reborn. I’m here to share a few things about our game (which launches this week on PS4) and the way we designed it. The Interface Should Be So Natural You Don’t Notice ItGemini has what designers refer to as diegetic UI. Which means the game’s UI “has a reason to be displayed in the game world.†When we first started on the project, the fitness wearables market was heating up. So we did a prototype of what “Apple Glasses†might look like as the player’s main visual user interface. I imagined SMS text bubbles as a way to cover subtitling, health apps running in the corner could monitor your vitals, etc. We wound up with something that is unobtrusive and effectively communicates the game data the player. It’s also cool how the player comes across the interface in-game. It’s natural and happens in a way that adds to the excitement of the moment when they’re sprung on you. It’s not every day we get to tie the UI into the game’s mechanics and narrative, so this was a really fun experiment. It’s Like Portal + BioShock Infinite + Mirror’s EdgeYou’ve seen Everything is a Remix, right? No one invents something 100% original, so when people ask what influenced design decisions, I like to be honest. We didn’t want to be a direct damage powers game. Be it guns, laser beams, breathing fire, etc. To stand out we had to not compete with other best-of-breed first-person combat games. Environment Navigation: A Lighter Mirror’s Edge We hate it when the player runs into one of those “I could easily get over this obstacle in real life†game-isms. And I’m not just talking about railings. If there’s a 6 foot high wall, any remotely athletic individual should be able to grab and pull themselves up. Our solution was to “look into†Mirror’s Edge (one of our favorites) to see how they were solving edge-finding for player navigation. They used a no-mark-up system of ray and box traces to find real-world edges, and if the player pawn bumped into one in the correct way, the game would pull the player up. We mocked up a similar system and were scaling cargo containers and grabbing perilous ledges with our fingertips in no time! Time-shifting: Yes They’re Portals To differentiate Gemini from other super power based games we use a Time Travel ability. When first-time players shift from the ruined Present location to the pristine Past, everyone gasps. It definitely leaves an impression. It also allows us to craft some neat puzzle elements that players probably haven’t experienced yet. For example, making them go back in time to a point where a blocked door in the present was left open in the past. It also allows for a quick retreat when necessary. It forces players to think spatially, and temporally, similar to how people would play Portal. Stop. Think about where you want to go and how you would get there. Then execute the plan. BioShock Hands; Elizabeth’s Tears Every time our player’s hand comes up to do an ability, everyone likes to point out “So, BioShock, eh?†Yup! Look, BioShock didn’t invent waving the player character’s hand in front of the face, but they took it to new communication heights. So we leaned on what they started and went from there. We also borrowed from BioShock Infinite. Our Time Scout ability lets you peek through time so you can “look before you leap.†Infinite has this with Elizabeth’s Tears. However, hers happen at an explicit point in a level and the narrative. Ours is a game mechanic that you could use however and whenever you want, not a narrative plot point. For example, follow a guard who is walking in the Past while you’re in the Present in order to time your jump. No, You Can’t Use a Gun… On Purpose! From day one we decided to make a conscious game design decision: the player can’t use a gun. Period. If you suddenly had amazing superpowers that allowed you to bend reality, stop time, catch bullets, and throw vending machine sized objects using your mind, you shouldn’t need to use a gun. They’re way beneath you on the power scale. And if you were an everyday college student like our character, could you even use one effectively? This isn’t Our First Superheroes RodeoOur desire to have player intent and game mechanics (vs. Narrative) drive the minute-to-minute player choice is because of our pedigree. While at Midway games we worked on a project called Hero. After founding Phosphor Games we decided to try and recreate it as “Project Awakened.†It was a game about hero character customization and ability choices. As it turns out Tim Kring saw it and approached us to do Gemini as a result. View the full article
  12. Hey everyone! I’ve been itching to tell you about this for the longest time, and now I finally can! We’re happy to reveal the single-player story details for Street Fighter V. There are two main components to the story experience: Character Stories and the Cinematic Story Expansion. Character StoriesWe knew there would be a lot of new players who are jumping into the franchise for the very first time, so we wanted to provide a way for everyone to become familiar with the eclectic personalities of each fighter. Each character has his or her own storyline that provides background information on what drives him or her to fight, and what that fighter’s relationships are to the other characters. Each story has been illustrated by renowned Japanese illustrator Bengus who worked on a variety of Capcom titles in the past. I think you’ll find his colorful, throwback style fits perfectly with the background tales we want to tell about each character. What answers does Ryu seek in his never-ending journey? What happened to Charlie Nash after his apparent demise in Street Fighter Alpha? Who is Necalli and what does he want? Play the Character Stories to find out all these answers and more! Once you complete all of them you’ll be ready for the next part of the story experience, which is… Cinematic Story ExpansionFor the first time in franchise history, we are creating a cinematic story experience that takes players deep into the Street Fighter action and mythology through beautifully rendered cutscenes. The Story Expansion will be available to all players as a free content update, releasing in June 2016. Chronologically in the Street Fighter storyline, it takes place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III, and fully explains everything that transpired in that electrifying time period. If you got goosebumps from watching our latest story trailer, know that you are definitely not alone. M. Bison and Shadaloo will be a main focus of the story… and I can’t say much more than that right now. We’ll have more details to share about this free update in the coming months, so stay tuned! Finally, as a big thank you to all the fans who have supported us throughout the year, we are holding one final beta starting January 30th at 12:01 AM Pacific and ending January 31th at 7:00 PM Pacific. If you have been on the fence about getting the game, this will be your last chance to try it out before release so be sure to pre-order for beta access, as well as exclusive costumes! I mean, just look at this guy! That’s all for now. Until next time! View the full article

  18. Hello, PlayStation fans! My name is Aurelien Loos, producer at Leikir Studio, an indie game maker in France. We’re a brand new studio and we try to bring grand new ideas to our game design. For example, our first game — Isbarah — combined action-platforming gameplay with bullet-hell (i.e. “danmakuâ€) action. Isbarah is a very hardcore game. With our next game, we wanted to make something that anyone could pick up and enjoy. We also wanted to have a big focus on multiplayer — we have fond memories of playing “couch competition†games where you play with buddies right next to you. And as big PlayStation fans, it’s especially exciting for our team to bring our next title to PS4 — Wondershot! Wondershot is a top-down, multiplayer focused party game. The controls are simple and responsive, and the rule is quite straightforward: “one shot and you’re down.†Four players can go head-to-head and use one of four weapons. Each weapon has its own special ability, which is especially useful with the constantly shifting map environments. There’s also cooperative play where buddies can take on waves of wicked CPU-enemies. We had a chance to show this off at a recent games convention in Paris, and even got an award! We’re absolutely thrilled to bring the game to PS4 in the coming months. View the full article
  19. Just like the game itself, the life of Pixel Piracy has been a wonderful adventure that constantly surprises. Welcome aboard, you scallywags! We’re thrilled to bring Pixel Piracy to PS4 alongside 505 Games and Re-Logic. Abstraction Games has done an awesome job bringing our PC indie hit to console, and we’re grateful to have them all as part of our pirate crew! I actually wanted to get into games because I saw that Andrew Spinks (Re-Logic, Terraria fame) had been in the military and had changed his life to pursue his dreams . Likewise I was stuck in the army on the Jordanian/Iraq border getting mortared daily and thought that there was more to life than that! Andrew really inspired me to grab my dreams, turn my life around, and make them happen. It’s funny how things turn out, because Re-Logic published the game when we were ready to launch on PC, so my dreams came utterly true! My life changed when I met Vitali Kirpu, an insanely talented one-man-band developer who had this awesome game demo which ultimately became Pixel Piracy… and the rest is history. Over time we’ve added more folks to the Pixel team and added a ton of new content to the game, making it the deepest, open-world pirate RPG sim that ever did live. The great thing for console players is that they get all of the major PC update content already baked into the launch version. We’ve partnered with 505 Games on the PS4 launch. The team has done a great job with Abstraction to make improvements to the UI and to make sure the console controls are nailed, and giving it the all-around piratey polish it needed to bring it to the masses. If you like pirates, this is the game for you. If you like the sound of recruiting a motley crew and sailing the seven seas in search of booty, other pirate crews to kill, chasing chickens, building your ship block by block, cleaning the poop deck, boarding enemy ships, then jump aboard. It also has this wonderful pixel look — the title gives that away — but don’t be fooled; this is a really deeply layered RPG simulation that rewards time spent and exploration. Our pirate dudes are only a few pixels high but they are cheeky and deadly in equal measure. Let us know what you think — or otherwise you might be the next to the walk the plank! 20. We’re super excited to announce that the critically acclaimed Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, this generation’s best couch co-op experience (in our totally unbiased opinion), is coming to PS4 on February 9th! Hooray! Team up with a friend (or a pet space-cat in 1P mode) and take control of a huge space battleship, dashing between turrets, engines, shields and super-weapons to battle the evil forces of Anti-Love, rescue kidnapped space-bunnies, and avoid a vacuumy demise. The League Of Very Empathetic Rescue Spacenauts (LOVERS) is depending on you! Did we mention that Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is launching just in time for Valentine’s Day? If you have a significant other, we recommend staying in, sitting on the couch, and arguing over who has the shield, fighting over the captain’s chair, and screaming “OMG, what is that? Run!†After all, nothing says “love†like a barrage of missiles exploding into a giant robotic space beetle. But wait! Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is not just for lovers — you can partner and play with just about anyone. The PS4 version includes new difficulty modes to accommodate even more player skill levels, so you can explore the colorful but dangerous galaxy with your friends, roommates, siblings, parents, children, strangers, acquaintances, grandparents, and even your space-cat. Lovers harkens back to the awesome couch co-op adventures we all had as kids, but updated with 1080p neon and 200% more cosmic buzzsaws. The fate of your battleship depends on both players at all times — and nobody gets left behind. For those of you out there who want to take on the challenge of piloting the ship yourself in 1-Player mode, don’t worry because we also have you covered. Team up with an AI controlled space-dog named Doppler or a space-cat named Kepler. Command your space-pet to use the stations in order to keep your ship safe. They’re better than you at just about everything except flying… because who in their right mind would let a dog fly a ship? Deep space is a dangerous place, but you don’t have to face it alone! 21. Hey PlayStation.Blog readers! We hope everyone had a great holiday. Here at Team17, we’ve got a lot of exciting games coming to PS4 in 2016 — the first of which I’m here to tell you about today is the awesome The Escapists The Walking Dead! Yes, that’s right — we’ve taken our breakout hit The Escapists and merged it with the well-loved universe that is Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic series. We’ve taken the very best of both worlds and lovingly recreated comic panels, dialogue, and the story of the award-winning comic series within the charming 8-bit style of The Escapists. Starting the game, you’ll take on the role of iconic protagonist Rick Grimes as he wakes up in the Harrison Memorial Hospital. This first tutorial level matches that very first issue of The Walking Dead comic, and sees Rick encounter his first walkers in the hospital. The levels will then follow the timeline of the comics, seeing Rick travel to various locations such as the Greene Family Farm, Meriwether Correctional Facility, Woodbury, and Alexandria. In fact, our game spans right up to around issue 83 of the comic! You’ll get to meet other familiar characters from the hit series along the way including Carl, Lori, Glenn, Hershel, Maggie, Dale, Tyreese, Michonne, Abraham, and Gabriel. As Rick, you must take care of your survivors by performing headcounts, and cleaning up the compound to avoid getting overrun with walkers. Fans of The Escapists will be glad to know crafting is still a big part of the game. Choosing from over 250 materials, you’ll be able to craft more than 70 different items to keep your survivors safe including tools like cutters and shovels, and weapons such as the modified pistol and rifle. We’ve absolutely loved teaming up with Skybound Entertainment on this and we can’t wait to see you on the leaderboards when The Escapists The Walking Dead launches for PS4 on February 16th. 22. Howdy folks! This is Paul from Camouflaj. I’m really excited to announce that Republique will be coming to PS4 on March 22nd! Some of you might remember Republique from our hairbreadth success on Kickstarter a few years back. Now, after many years of development, the five-episode Republique saga is finally ready for launch. The upcoming PS4 version will coincide with the completion of the fifth and final episode so all PS4 players will be able to experience Republique in a complete, long-form fashion. For those of you not familiar with Republique, it’s a story-driven stealth action game heavily inspired by the 32-bit era. At the start of the game, players form a partnership with Hope, a young woman trapped inside a secret totalitarian nation called Metamorphosis. From there, players hack into surveillance cameras and guide Hope to freedom over the course of the five-part campaign. Every episode introduces new enemies, environments, puzzles, and thematic elements, all feeding into a heavy commentary on privacy and security in the internet age. You might be surprised to read this, but the decision to bring Republique to PS4 was not an easy one. As many of you already know, our team here at Camouflaj puts a lot of thought into input methods and what that means for the player’s role in the story. With the mobile release, we labored over a “one touch†control scheme, and then with the desktop release, we transformed the game into a hotkey-friendly mouse and keyboard experience. From there, we knew that transitioning Republique to a true console experience is the natural next evolution of the game, but one huge barrier stood in our way: how the heck would the game control with a DualShock 4? Everything started with a secret prototype that Ryan, one of our designers, was quietly working on with Paulo, a programmer friend from Brazil. Ignoring suggestions that the game should play like a console RTS (with players issuing simple commands for Hope) or that we shift the game into an over-the-shoulder action game, Paulo and Ryan set out to give players complete control over Hope, much in the fashion of our favorite 32-bit games like Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve, and Deep Fear. After about a month of experimentation, it was revealed to the team. Even in its rough state, the DualShock 4 prototype demonstrated the potential of a PS4 version of Republique. From there, we entered into a partnership with GungHo Online Entertainment and began work in earnest on rebuilding Republique into a true PS4 experience. Underneath all the excitement in the studio about our partnership with GungHo and the PS4 version, it’s impossible to deny that there was an undercurrent of anxiety about whether we could really pull this off… The turning point for the project was PAX Prime. Thanks to GungHo, Republique had a huge presence at the show with twenty playable PS4 stations on display at their big purple booth. Not only was it a relief to see players seamlessly control the game with DualShock 4, but it was a rare opportunity to connect with fans of the game. While dodging questions about release dates and hardcore story questions, we had a transformative experience at PAX. Thanks to our dev partners at Darkwind Media, we arrived with a work-in-progress build that demonstrated our controller-friendly Hope actions and intuitive button UI for OMNI View. PAX was the turning point for the project, and gave us the confidence we needed to drive towards the finish line. I don’t want to get too technical, but I do want to point out a few key components that fuel the PS4 version. Firstly, we built a cover system from scratch with new, motion-captured animations. The fixed camera perspectives — which were my biggest concern initially — ended up being a huge asset. The analog controls flow naturally from one perspective to the next without impeding player movement, a trick we learned from playing a lot of old school Devil May Cry. We also spent many late nights with the Darkwind crew figuring out how to translate our “touch-friendly†OMNI hacking controls to DualShock 4. After prototyping a half dozen or so schemes, we landed on a button-focused solution powered by a bunch of under-the-hood game logic. (Please don’t ask me to explain how it works.) With the March 22nd release of Republique rapidly approaching, it’s a thrill that we’re able to crash the party on PlayStation.Blog today and announce that not only is GungHo releasing the game both digitally on PlayStation Store and physically in retailers, but that both versions will have access to new and original outfits for Hope. These outfits not only look great, but also unlock unique gameplay features that transform the way you’ll experience the game in subsequent playthroughs (Internally, we’re seeing average first playthroughs last between 10 to 15 hours). Even if you’re familiar with Republique — heck, especially if you are — we’re hopeful that its remarkable transformation on PS4 is going to surprise you. We were also very fortunate to have the opportunity to collaborate with Sony Computer Entertainment in the making of a unique outfit paying homage to Gravity Rush as additional exclusive content for the PS4 version. In closing, I just want to say that bringing Republique to PS4 really feels like a homecoming. We think we’ve got something special on our hands, especially for players itching for a game heavily inspired by classic 32-bit survival horror and stealth action games of the inaugural PlayStation era. Whether you’re a fan of those games or not, Republique’s hard-hitting story and voiceover performances from industry legends like Jennifer Hale, David Hayter, and Dwight Schultz really stand on their own, all held together by Rena Strober’s breakthrough performance as Hope. I think I can speak for the Camouflaj and Darkwind teams when I say we’re ecstatic to be sharing Republique with a whole new audience on PS4. Thanks so much for reading this, and Keep Hope Alive! 23. Imagine a world of robots partying after the annihilation of humankind. NeuroVoider will show you what this theoretical world would look like. Play as one of the four remaining human brains kept as tests subjects in a futuristic world where machines have overpowered the human race. Lead humanity’s last hope against the Evil Robots lead by the master NeuroVoider. NeuroVoider is an action-packed, top-down, twin-stick shooter featuring RPG mechanics. Playable with up to four friends cooperatively, it’s an hack ‘n’ slash rampage with a pinch of rogue-lite elements… and a bunch of explosions. You’ll play to loot and assemble parts of your robotic foes in order to build your own robotic entity to pilot. Fight your way through the oppression in a procedurally generated world with up to 8,736 unique enemies (Yes, we counted) and gigantic bosses that will hardly fit on your screen. A local multiplayer game about brains shooting evil robots with nuclear rocket launchers? This should ease your fear of robots, doesn’t it? Oh! And to top it off, play over the sound of the powerful dark synth music by Dan Terminus. May your ears survive the beat. A Small Team of Shooter LoversWe are Flying Oak Games, a two-man team composed of Florian (the pixel magician) and Thomas (It’s me! I’m the “tech & other stuff†guy), and everything started around some pizza. Before working on NeuroVoider, Florian and I had the habit to spend our Friday nights together playing some local multiplayer games like TowerFall, Borderlands, or Nuclear Throne. Playing with friends, all together on the couch with a slice of pizza is what we like the most in gaming! Hence, we were quite obliged to create our own take on the four-player, action-packed style of game. NeuroVoider was born! Explosions, dark synth music, high replay value, and a good dose of difficulty to spend the whole night having a good time — alone or with a bunch of friends. We’re looking forward to bring NeuroVoider to your PS4! Cheers guys! View the full article
  24. A tragic past. An unfinished painting. And a crumbling psyche. These are the core elements that make up the setting of Layers of Fear, a new psychological horror game coming to PS4 on February 16th. In Layers of Fear you play as an anonymous painter, clearly haunted by his tragic past and fixated on regaining what he has lost. His only solace is to delve deep into madness while trying to finish his life’s work — his Magnum Opus. The game is a psychedelic, atmospheric thriller, with the plot focused on the drive for perfection and where it can lead you as a person. One of the first concepts we had for the game was a focus on fine art, and we have made it one of the most important ones. A lot of the artists in our studio have a MA degree in Art and are fascinated by what our predecessors have created. Disturbing paintings of murders and religious reckonings have been in our culture for centuries and are a never-ending bank of ideas and inspiration that haunt people to this day. So why not reinterpret this inspiration into a truly unique horror game? That’s exactly what we did. In creating Layers of Fear, we also wanted to bring a new perspective to the horror genre by introducing a lead character whose own world changes around him as he struggles with insanity and loses his grip on reality. Both the fine art surroundings and the painter’s family home, originally sources of inspiration and accomplishment, deteriorate along with the character’s own psyche, representing how madness, obsession, and tragedy can influence one’s mind and cause the player to doubt his or her every step. Imagine you walk into an empty square room. There is a door on each of the walls. You dart to the first door to find it sealed shut. You go to the next door and then to the next, only to discover it’s the same story for each one of them. But upon turning around you find all the doors are gone. There are just plain walls. You make another circle around the room. Did you see that right? Were there doors there or was that somewhere else? Then the room shrinks behind your back. Feeling claustrophobic? And then a new door appears; this time it’s open. What is on the other side is not what you expect. This is a simple example of how the game works and how we build tension and discomfort for the player. It was a huge challenge for us to create a horror game without simply resorting to jump-scares or enemies chasing you around. We designed, prototyped, and tested the same versions of each location countless times to find players’ patterns so we could find the tipping point of creating player tension. It was a ton of work, and we found ourselves playing our own mind games, discussing how family, work, and tragedy have affected our own lives. I guess you could say creating Layers of Fear has been cathartic for us. But we believe we have done it — a horror game where the scares come from the setting rather than another rotten, faceless zombie that wants to eat your brain, and a game that stays with you long after you’ve played it. In Layers of Fear, the more you explore and delve into the game’s world, the more gratifying the story gets. We have left tons of personal items, notes, photos, and wall scribbles that expand the plot and immerse you in the story, while also leaving much to the player’s imagination. Chapter after chapter you will ask yourself what has really transpired in the life of the main character. Layers of Fear is a scary and psychedelic wild ride that bends our perception of the world; it makes you think about the gravity of tragedy and how it could define our lives. Horror has always been our passion and forte, and we hope that you will enjoy this trip through madness as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. Please leave any questions or thoughts you may have in the comments. View the full article
