  1. Hi everyone! My name’s Dan, and I’m here today to tell you about a new upcoming game — Hardware: Rivals, coming exclusively to PS4 via PlayStation Store! As some of our veteran readers may recognize, this new game builds upon the legacy of a PS2 title, “Hardware: Online Arenaâ€, a vehicle-based combat game that was one of the very first online gaming experiences for PlayStation back in 2002. We’re a new internal development group here at Sony Computer Entertainment and we’re all very fond of the original game (and some of the team even worked on it!). Armed with PS4, we leapt at the chance to put a new coat of paint on an old friend. We’ve taken the opportunity to introduce a truckload of upgrades and new features, but the spirit of the original gameplay remains the same. Bringing back the explosive mayhem and online rivalry of vehicle combat has been an absolute pleasure, and we can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel. With multiple maps, game modes, challenges, and special events, Hardware: Rivals lets you jump online for some frenetic vehicle-on-vehicle combat. You can go in as a lone wolf or as part of a team, and on top of our regular game modes we also have a constantly updating schedule of special events that add new twists to the game. Fast Attack Vehicles give you agility and quick access to those tricky weapon pickups, but you can’t get complacent out in the open. Tanks are less nimble but can take a hit and bring hefty firepower and a formidable presence to the battlefield. You’ll be able to challenge your friends and hunt down your rivals. Wear your colors proudly and unlock vehicle upgrades to tweak your ride to your own personal taste. Here on the development team we have daily debates over which vehicles and weapons are the best, and we can’t wait to hear what you think. Keep an eye on the blog for more information, as we’re going to be running a Beta in the near future. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to get your feedback and welcome everyone back to the arena. See you there! View the full article
  2. Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1 storms onto PS4 on September 22nd before any other console! And only PlayStation gamers will be able to get a special discounted Trilogy bundle containing all 3 volumes of the game for 20% off the regular retail price, and PlayStation Plus members will get the bundle for 30% off. Purchasers of the bundle will get the first game of the series, Volume 1, on September 22nd. Volumes 2 and 3 launch at a later date. But this means nothing to you unless you know what Afro Samurai is. To set the stage, it’s one of this century’s coolest manga/hip hop universe incarnations that has a rabid fan base who is passionate about the characters and story. If you like manga, anime, and hip hop, you’ll love this. Afro Samurai was originally a Japanese manga created by revered artist Takashi Okazaki. The story centered around this cool looking character called Afro Samurai. As a young child he witnesses his father being brutally murdered, all for the sake of the #1 headband (believed to give the wearer super powers). As he grows up, he is driven by an insatiable desire to avenge his father’s death, a desire that ends up getting a lot of innocent people — people that he would call his family — killed in the process. It’s a dramatic, tragic story, full of action and a lot of brutal combat. Needless to say, the opportunity was ripe for the picking, and after being picked up by GONZO, the original story was turned into a cult animated TV series which aired on SPIKE TV, and also a video game. Fast forward several years and fans have almost been starved of any new piece of content that they could consume. Until now. Indie dev studio Redacted got the rights to breathe new life into Afro Samurai, and they’ve breathed a whole lot of action packed slicing and dicing into it as well! Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma is the action-packed sequel to the original story and picks up where the first game left off. However this time the story follows the path of Kuma, a cybernetically enhanced killing machine with a bear’s head who was actually once Afro’s closest childhood friend called Jino. Kuma regains consciousness after being defeated by Afro (that was the ending of the first game) and has to regain his strength, humanity, and sanity in order to go after Afro to avenge the deaths of all those he loved, especially that of his adopted little sister Otsuru who was one of the children murdered at the Sword School massacre. It’s a 3rd-person combat on steroids, with a bit of Tomb Raider type exploration in it, and a whole lot of hack and slash fighting with visceral, bloody finishing moves. It’s not for the faint of heart. One of the cool things that came up unexpectedly with this latest Afro Samurai game is being able to add in original work from Takashi Okazaki himself — that’s right, the creator of Afro Samurai himself. The Redacted team is using manga drawn scenes to tell some amazing stories. These scenes add the drama, emotion, and violence in a way that fits right in with the Afro vibe. They come in as small cells, pop-ups, or full screen images as you progress through the game. It’s been many years since Okazaki-san has completed some new Afro images and the fans are going to love it! The game is being delivered in 3 distinct volumes, each with its own new story arch, characters, and combat styles to master, plus original soundtrack by up and coming indie hip hop artists that have been mentored by the one and only RZA of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan. He’s been the music director on the franchise since the original animated series (and did you know he’s actually now been immortalized in Afro Samurai as a new character, Bobby Digital, who you’ll get to see in this game). Music is such an important element to the Afro Samurai brand. They tell stories, provide context and drama to some of the most critical story elements of the game. In fact you can almost say the music was being worked on before even the game development had begun. Hundreds of hours have been put into the soundtrack. It’s a labor of love, and a love for the franchise, that these tracks were created. Taking all this in — and with the guidance and support from RZA — you are going to experience a great Afro soundtrack. Fans of Afro are going to like listening to this soundtrack outside of the game. As a special treat though, you can listen to and see the debut music video that was just released from one of the tracks on Volume 1 by indie artist Visual Eyez here. Sharpen your blades, PlayStation gamers — September 22nd is approaching fast! View the full article
  3. SOMA, our new sci-fi horror game, will be released at the end of September. That’s pretty soon, so I think I’d like to talk a bit about our monsters up front. When creating SOMA we wanted to make our encounters disturbing. To do this our goal has been to trigger the player’s imagination in the right way. In horror games the most important thing is not what is seen, but what happens in the player’s mind. The player will always be able to conjure up far worse things in their imagination than we can do with polygons. Here are five ways in which we try to achieve this: 1.) Creatures Have A Varying Degree of Hostility It’s quite common for creatures in games to simply just run at the player as soon as they spot them. Not so in SOMA. Here, some creatures might just stand and stare at you for a while. Others will ignore you until you disturb them. Some might not be dangerous at all — or at least, not in a dangerous mood right now. But the kicker is that you as a player will never know, and will constantly be pondering what might be the case for each creature that you see. Because of this players will build a more complex mental model of each creature, fueling their imagination. 2.) AI and Tactics Vary for Each Creature Type When you first encounter a creature, your imagination runs wild trying to figure out how it might behave. A vivid mental image is built up and the creature feels really scary. But after a while you start noticing patterns, the monsters become more of a gameplay object and much of the dread is lost. In order to combat this, we have made sure that different types of creature have completely different tactics. For example, one type of creature forces you to avoid eye contact, some creatures react to your movement speed, others only to sound, and so forth. This ensures that you are always out of your comfort zone. 3.) Creatures Are Used Sparingly We also make sure that you never get too familiar with a creature. Each type of creature is only encountered a few times in the whole game, and you are never given enough time to fully figure them out. Instead you need to rely on narrative clues: things you find in notes or are told by other characters and so forth. Again, this makes sure that players are forced to use more of their imagination. 4.) Obscure Damage System Normally a game gives you a life bar and it is pretty clear how many hits you can take before going down. But in SOMA it is much less deterministic. Sometimes an attack will barely make a scratch, sometimes it will knock you down and force you to crawl out of danger, and other times you will die on the first hit. By making sure that there is no simple rule underlying it all, players need to be constantly on their toes and cannot predict how an encounter will play out. On top this, the act of healing yourself is done in a slightly disturbing manner and could come with negative consequences. 5.) All Creatures Are Connected to Our Themes A core part of SOMA is the underlying subject matter that the game explores. Consciousness, identity, and questions about our very existence are cornerstones of the game’s overall experience. This applies to our monsters as well, and each of them embodies some part of our themes. This means that the creatures are not just padding along the way, but have an important part in building up our narrative. By having this strong story connection, we urge you to think more about them and their place in this world, tickling your imagination further. That should give you a taste for what the creature encounters in SOMA are like. The game is out on September 22nd and we’re excited to hear how you feel as you meet some of them. 5. Woo-hoo! The original PlayStation launched in North America 20 years ago today! To commemorate the big day, I thought it might be fun to crack open a sealed original PlayStation system — something I haven’t done since I was in middle school. Let’s revisit a time before dual analog sticks and force feedback were considered standard, when game saves were stored on tiny plastic cards, when a double-speed CD-ROM drive and 2MB of RAM were your ticket to the biggest gaming experiences possible. Gather ‘round to see what greeted gamers on September 9th, 1995. While I’ve got you, here’s a sneak peek at some upcoming limited-edition PlayStation 20th anniversary posters designed by the talented Cory Schmitz, whose work you may recognize from Sound Shapes, Santa Monica Studio’s new logo, and much more. He’s also a particularly big fan of the original PlayStation, as you can see here! Stay tuned for more info on how you can get your hands on this sweet, sweet artwork. In the meantime, your phone has a gorgeous new lock screen. 20th Anniversary DualShock 4 PlayStation.com 20th Anniversary Wireless Headset PlayStation.com View the full article
  6. Where were you 20 years ago? I was in Tokyo, already enjoying my PlayStation as it had launched over nine months earlier in Japan, December 3, 1994, and I am sure I was still chasing the final black racer in Ridge well into 1995. By the time the PlayStation launched in North America on 9/9/95, I was splitting my time between Tekken and Battle Arena Toshinden and trying to get a US copy of ESPN Street Games (incidentally, the first game I worked on at SCEI to localize for the Japanese market.) Those were exciting and pioneering times for all of us: new technology, the arcade experience in the home, and no guarantee that we would still be around come the turn of the century –- or sooner. Exciting times indeed. But we did make it. And thanks to the dedication and passion of the greatest gaming community of all time, the PlayStation Nation, we are celebrating the twentieth birthday of the original PlayStation system, which officially launched in North America on September 9th, 1995. At its launch, PlayStation was a stylish, powerful, developer-friendly game console that popularized polygonal 3D graphics and CD playback of games and music. Will you be playing any classic PlayStation games today to celebrate? I’m going to fire up my PS3 and see if I have retained any of my wipEout anti-grav skills. Damn that game was rock hard, and it still has the best soundtrack ever. If you want to share your celebration of the twentieth anniversary with your fellow gamers, I’m also pleased to announce the launch of a 20th Anniversary SHAREfactory theme which will be available today for free on PlayStation Store in North America. Before I go, I wanted to point out that PlayStation.Blog is celebrating PlayStation’s big 2-0 today and tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled. Look out for a tough-as-nails trivia quiz, a video unboxing of the original PlayStation, and a chance for PlayStation fans to officially name the best PlayStation game of all time. 10. Growing up with four other brothers, we played a lot of video games together. Many nights we’d find ourselves searching through drawers and cupboards looking for where our parents hid the power cable for our favorite console. Super Smash Brothers, Quake 3 Arena, and Unreal Tournament were a few of the games that created experiences between us brothers that enhanced our relationship with one another and opened our minds to the endless creativity found in the world of video games. Fast forward to present day and we find ourselves working on our dream game Crashnauts, which we are excited to announce is coming to PS4! Crashnauts is a 2D arena shooter that focuses on fluid and precise player movement, brutal fast paced combat, and objective based gametypes. We’ve taken some of the best game mechanics from the twitch shooter games of the 90’s and made it our own. One game mechanic in Crashnauts that is a fan favorite is the spawning system. While it is already rather fun to watch yourself die in Crashnauts, we wanted to make the experience even more enjoyable. When it’s time for your player to spawn, you control a droplight laser from the sky moving it horizontally across the arena. Watching the players below you fight with one another you can time your respawn at just the right time to obliterate unsuspecting enemies below with your Crashpod. The other game mechanic that makes Crashnauts really special is the extra wide levels combined with a scrollable camera. From the beginning we’ve wanted to have most game modes in Crashnauts be objective based. Having these extra wide levels allows for some really cool game modes like “PUSH†where players have to kill the opposing team to advance the game camera towards the enemy generator and destroy it, or like “War Hero†where players take turns being the hero that tries to advance his flag the farthest in a 1v3 uphill battle. Crashnauts is hitting the point where it is able to bloom and ideas are starting to take shape. We just recently showed the game at the Salt Lake Gaming Con and feedback from players was overwhelmingly positive. We frequently heard players say “It’s like Smash Bros. with guns!†We are excited to finally be showing the game off in public and can’t wait to see what the Playstation community helps Crashnauts become. To find out more about Crashnauts, check out www.crashnauts.com or our Kickstarter page. View the full article
  11. Hey PlayStation.Blog readers! Together with independent developer Tiger & Squid, we’re excited to announce that the beautiful Beyond Eyes is heading to PS4 tomorrow! 15. Good afternoon, Susan. I trust that your kickoff meeting ran smoothly this morning and that you enjoyed your zesty chicken salad for lunch. Apologies, I am being somewhat presumptuous. Allow me to introduce myself first: my name is Gordon Midwood, I am Head of Everything at Different Cloth and I bring the most excellent news. Drive!Drive!Drive! — the only racer to offer you the chance to race more than one track at the same time — is coming to PS4 and PS Vita in 2016! Furthermore, the game is being published by the excellent and mildly erogenous human-based lifeforms at Choice Provisions! For the uninitiated: Drive!Drive!Drive! is a driving game about racing multiple tracks at the same time. It’s kind of a mixture of arcade racing and track management. In Drive!Drive!Drive! you must race and manage multiple tracks at the same time. You are able to switch between the different tracks of a race any time you like. When you switch away from a track, a computer racer takes over driving on that track for you. Unfortunately, the computer racers aren’t what you’d call competent. They are what you’d call incompetent. But in a clever way. In other words, to place well in every track you’re racing you’re going to have to hop from track-to-track on a regular basis to account for the subversively cretinous computer cars. Luckily for you your opponents have been programmed to severely lack in cognitive ability, too! This Artificial IdiocyTM is uniquely powered by our Intelligent StupidityTM engine. The game will feature an amazing soundtrack by the world’s state-of-the art synth/prog/post-rock band ZOMBI, not to mention those trippy retro/future visuals all the kids are hallucinating over. Oh, and did we mention it’s set across different galaxies and multiple gravities? Drive!Drive!Drive! will feature a track creator at its heart allowing you to easily create, play, and share your wildest gravity-defying creations. I wonder how would you feel about challenging your friends to race these creations in multiplayer, too? We are so incredibly excited about Drive!Drive!Drive! We cannot wait to bring these multiple races to your PlayStation faces! View the full article

  19. Hi! I’m the game designer on Leo’s Fortune and I’m here to tell you more about our game before it arrives on PS4 September 8th. We (1337 & Senri) are a small team of three independent game developers from Gothenburg, Sweden. But I haven’t always been indie. Before this I was the lead designer on Battlefield 2 at DICE. The reason I went from AAA blockbusters to making indie games is because I had a desire to make games the way I want to, with the type of creative vision and attention to detail that isn’t possible at a big studio. With each game we make we try to add our innovative spin and personal touch on a genre we love. Leo’s Fortune is our take on the classic platformer. We took classic platforming elements and put our spin on it by adding physics-based puzzles, painstakingly handcrafted graphics, and an original story with fully voiced cutscenes. In Leo’s Fortune you’ll guide Leopold on a quest to recover his stolen gold fortune and uncover the mystery of who stole it. Along the way you’ll encounter some of Leo’s quirky and suspicious family members like Uncle Sergey and Cousin Victor. When you play Leo’s Fortune or check out our trailer, we hope you’ll notice the quality and effort we put into the graphics and environments. Most platform games are designed using a set of repeating texture tiles. We chose not to make our lives any easier and did not use a tile system. Instead, each level in Leo’s Fortune is one enormous unique panoramic image, created from scratch. We even developed our own game engine from scratch. This is why we often refer to the game as “handcrafted.†We could’ve made this game more easily using off-the-shelf tools, but we don’t think the result would have been the same. Designed to meet the quality of a console game, Leo’s Fortune first released as a mobile game where it helped raise the bar of expectations for what a mobile game can be and won some neat awards in the process. We’re proud to have resolutely decided our game would be 100% premium with no free-to-play elements, a difficult decision in the market today. Now we’re proud to present you with the best version of Leo’s Fortune, gloriously rendered with a 1080p graphical upgrade. So please enjoy Leo’s Fortune on PS4 when it launches on September 8th, and let us know what you think when you find out who stole his gold. View the full article

  21. We’ve been busy preparing our next major system software update for PS4, version 3.00 (codename: Kenshin). The update is packed with content, and we wanted to give you a quick glance at its key features. If you were selected for our beta program, you’ll get to see these features first-hand very soon. Keep in mind, some of this content might not make it into the final version — that’s why we’re having a beta, after all. We’ve added new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further. Online storage capacity increase — PS4 online storage capacity has increased from 1GB to 10GB for all PS Plus members. In 3.00 system software, you’ll see that we added a handy usage meter to monitor your available storage capacity, and a new Auto-Upload menu has been added to Application Saved Data Management. YouTube live — PS4 owners will be able to livestream gameplay to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube, including on the new YouTube Gaming mobile app and website. Events — A new hub for events has been added, giving an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, you may see an update for a Double XP weekend, a special enemy appearing at a scheduled time, or seasonal events like in-game towns being decorated for the winter. You’ll also receive notifications when the event starts, or if the timing changes. Favorite Groups — Favorite Groups has been added to the Friends app, letting you quickly access groups of people you like to play games with frequently. This will make the process of getting a game session up and running even easier. Communities — PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties / games. If you want to tackle a big multiplayer raid, but don’t have enough friends available, this could be a great way to connect with other players who are looking for the same thing. Sharing video clips to Twitter — Users will have the ability to share video clips directly to Twitter. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Stickers — Tired of typing out messages? With this update, you’ll be able to send stickers to friends through your messages. Now Playing / What’s New — The Now Playing screen will display even more information about what your friends are doing, and you’ll be able to quickly jump into a game, party, request a screen share, or get sent to the PS Store to buy the game your friend is playing – further enhancing the social relationship with your friends online. Live from PlayStation — We’ve improved the Live From PlayStation app, making it easier to view popular trending broadcasts in real time. Request to watch gameplay — Want to view a friend’s gameplay session? Now you can send a ‘Request to Watch’ notification to a player, which will start a live broadcast or Share Play invitation to the person playing. There’s more included in this update, but that’s a quick glance at some of the items we’re excited about the most. We’ll be back with more info about Kenshin soon, including the launch timing. 23. The Wasteland is a destructive, wild, and savagely endless expanse. Max needs to brave these harsh conditions, to embrace the madness and violence to find the peace he so desperately seeks. On your journey, it’d be easy to be consumed by the thirst and hunger, and to miss the hidden gems that lie buried beneath the concrete and dust, behind the battles and between the points of respite to the plains of silence. We want players to take the time to stop, take a breather, and dig deeper as they travel across the world. Countless things are there to find, out of plain sight, some obvious and others subtle. We hope players will discover the riches of the world as they explore and seek the means to survive. It’s as much about the journey as it is the destination. Here are five things we hope players experience within the open-world Wasteland. What once was a vibrant place of life and color, now only has faded remnants of the old world trying to break through the cracked asphalt like a pervasive weed. The player has a massive open world to explore with the tools to discover and unveil its shrouded or forgotten secrets. Waste not, want not is the ethos of the people here. Critters can be found scuttling across the sands or soaring above wasteland leftovers. These can make for a quick snack on the fly, but you need to be quick on your feet and faster on the draw. Not everything lies above the sand — beneath it, where it’s cool and dark, others have made a home and keep things of great value. Buzzard lairs aren’t the only subterranean spaces to explore. The best way to infiltrate an enemy camp isn’t always the “head-on, smash and crash†approach. Subterfuge and illusion can often be as effective and deadly as a Thunderpoon to the face! Wastelanders value vehicles as a safe haven, a weapon, a prize, and a symbol of great importance and value. Enemy camps or loot locations sometimes hold one of these like a jewel in a crown. Culture and an appreciation for beauty can still exist, even in the harshest of environments. Relics tell the story of the time before the world fell. Images of a long-forgotten normality and its decline into chaos. These weave the story of the people from before into the lore of the wasteland, their scrawling not understood by those who hold them. 24. Hey everyone, it’s T.K. back again on PlayStation.Blog. I’ve had the pleasure of being able to peek in time-to-time to talk about the latest and greatest titles from Konami on PlayStation platforms, but today by far outranks them all. I am incredibly proud to announce the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on PS4 and PS3, available today on disc and via PlayStation Store. Metal Gear Solid, for those uninitiated, is the decade-spanning, globe-trotting, epic spy saga about the consequences of war, nuclear détente, and occasionally cardboard boxes. The latest entry, The Phantom Pain, takes place 9 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (also available on PS4/PS3) as the legendary soldier Big Boss wakes from his long coma since the events of Ground Zeroes. With the fire of revenge burning in his heart, he sets out to rebuild his former mercenary legion with allies new and old, and swears vengeance upon Skullface and the mysterious XOF organization. Lucky for Boss, he has a big, beautiful playground to work with. Boasting a map bigger than all previous games combined, you will plan, execute, and command the battlefield. And when you finally fight your way to the end of the conclusion to this secret chapter of Metal Gear history, the war rages on in our online Forward Operating Base mode, which pits you in a 1-on-1 match to attack (or defend) critical materials from fellow players around the world! If squad vs. squad is more your tune, we have our full-blown multiplayer coming October 6th, which gives you plenty of time to tackle the massive single-player mode. Need more field support while you are tackling tough missions? Grab The Phantom Pain companion App for in-depth second screen functionality and tactical support, also available starting today for iOS and Android devices. So, to recap, amazing story, massive gameplay, and great multiplayer all in one package. What are you waiting for? We hope you’ll enjoy Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. View the full article
  25. Ever since we revealed Star Wars Battlefront at Star Wars Celebration, you’ve been asking us if there would be a Beta. Today, we are thrilled to finally be able to answer that question, and the answer is yes! Coming in early October to PS4, the Star Wars Battlefront Beta is a technical test and will feature Walker Assault on Hoth, a 40-player multiplayer battle featuring Rebels and the Empire. Walker Assault will also give you the chance to play as two of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars universe: Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. The Beta will also feature our Survival Mission on Tatooine, where you and a Rebel friend must fight back waves of Imperial forces. In addition to those two modes, we are excited to reveal a brand-new mode that will be available in the Beta, Drop Zone. We’ll be sharing more details on Drop Zone in the weeks ahead. As part of the Star Wars Battlefront Beta we are also happy to reveal the Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience. Available during the Beta on the official site, the Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience features the strategic card game Base Command, and lets you earn in-game Credits that unlock Star Cards, weapons, and more in Star Wars Battlefront. In addition to Base Command, the Companion also lets Rebels and Imperials alike check game stats and progression, customize loadouts and appearance, connect with friends, and get notified when they’re playing Star Wars Battlefront — as well as gather intel on their stats and progression so you can see how you match up! The Star Wars Battlefront Companion will be available on web, the Apple App Store and Google Play store prior to the release of Star Wars Battlefront on November 17th. We’ll have a lot more info regarding the Star Wars Battlefront Beta in the weeks ahead, so be sure to stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog, follow us on social, and sign-up for our newsletter to get all the latest news.
