  1. It’s here, N++ is finally here! Wondering what the 14th letter of the alphabet (plus plus) could be? Check out our launch trailer: N++ | PlayStation.com N++ is an action-puzzle platformer that’s smooth as butter, if butter ran at 60fps at 1080p. You play as a gold-thirsty ninja, trying to survive in a world designed to make that difficult. We paid a lot of attention to how this game feels: the controls are responsive, tight and precise, letting you move through the levels acrobatically, and deftly evade the deadly enemy robots that populate the strange futuristic world. We have lovingly crammed N++ full of thousands of thoughtfully designed levels (2360 spanning Solo, Co-op and Competitive MP (Race)), a 63-track soundtrack of some of the best electronic music the world has to offer, over 50 colour schemes, tons of fun-lockables™ and plenty of decidedly devious hidden challenges to allow a lifetime of play. As mentioned in the trailer, we’re never making a sequel, so we made this one to last No other game is quite like N++. Even if you’ve played a game in the series before, you owe it to yourself to see how it’s evolved. We added new enemies that are terrifying and thrilling, new mechanics and puzzles, reworked the Race rules so it’s great for parties but also deep enough for serious competition, and have carefully tweaked the entire game so it looks and feels like perfection. We’re confident you won’t be disappointed. People have been asking about trophies – there are plenty, and we tried to have fun with them too! We’ve created some interesting special challenges that add another layer to the game, and included a few humourous ones to take the edge off. Plus (plus), we’re excited to announce that there’s also a Platinum trophy! YES! But that’s not all! There’s also a level editor and global level-sharing, plus highscores with replays for every level in the game (including the ones you make!). We love highscore competitions with friends, so we made sure to support it in N++. If that’s STILL not enough, we’ll also be adding more to the game with future DLC. (Note: whenever you buy the game, you’re also buying a “lifetime pass†to all future DLC. We are planning a substantial update that will increase the cost of the game / lifetime pass, so buy early if you’re looking to get N++ on the cheap! It won’t be going on sale much either, because, due to the level-sharing we have a relatively high cost per user, ruling out steep discounts). When it’s all said and done, this game is going to be massive – this is the last, and the best, version of the game that will ever be, so we’re determined to close out the series with a bang! Ok, ok we’ll stop gushing now. Suffice it to say, N++ is magnificent, and we could not be happier with it. We’re so excited for you all to finally see what we’re talking about. What are you waiting for? Grab it now! 2. You are not prepared. These words will greet you when you load up Velocibox on your PS4 and PS Vita. You think you have the twitch reflexes to keep up with this madness? Velocibox is the crown jewel of endless runners. The gameplay is straightforward, but within seconds you’ll realize you’ve met your match. Go ahead: try to memorize the patterns, position yourself properly, and time your movements to get through each level. Do your best to maneuver through the dynamic obstacles that stand between you and victory. Flip, dodge, and twist to collect cubes in order to advance further into the don’t-blink-or-you-die insanity of Velocibox. This diabolical creation from Shawn Beck Games and LOOT Interactive will cause you to uncontrollably scream, yell, and swear at the top of your lungs. Cringe-worthy sounds that make you think twice about whether or not Velocibox is safe for your sanity, your blood pressure, and your nervous system. Velocibox has that “Just one more round!†level of addiction. You’ll be attacking this game for days. Weeks. Months. Because unless you have the reflexes of a Formula One driver, you will experience your fair share of defeat. But just when you think you can’t stand to hear, “Level One: Begin…Game Over†round after round after round, and you contemplate giving up, something glorious happens: you finish level one. The overwhelming endorphin rush that takes place the first time you conquer level one is almost too good for words. It is glorious. Savor this feeling. Remember it well. It will last exactly 2.3 seconds — because now you come face-to-face with the monster of never-ending pain that is level two. If self-punishment is what you’re into (no judging here), than we dare you to try your hand at what might be one of the most difficult Gold Trophies in the history of PlayStation: in Ranked mode, successfully make it through levels one through nine… in a single run. ╯°□°)╯︵ â”»â”â”» To give some idea of just how ridiculously hard that Trophy is: in all the months of developing and testing this game, we’ve only see one person even come close to making it through. And should we even talk about how to unlock Super Velocibox…? Yup, just when you thought you had it all figured out, there’s an even more glorious, insane, hair-on-fire challenge ready to make your acquaintance: Super Velocibox. Test your skills, your reflexes, and your ability to persevere in the face of an unyielding challenge. Be one with the Box! Velocibox. Coming to your PS4 and PS Vita on July 28th, complete with a killer dynamic PS4 theme. Play the game, then let us know how far you got in the comments below. View the full article
  3. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have always longed to burgle some Victorian idiot’s house, but due to the cruel ravages of linear timelines, you’ve been forever denied the opportunity of that joyful, joyful experience. The sheer misfortune of being born in the wrong century means we’ll never get to see a marvellously-mustachioed gentleman slowly removing his top hat as he realizes some scamp’s nicked all his cash, and that simply isn’t fair. Fortunately, thanks to Computer Technology, we’re in a position to digitally recreate the halcyon days of busting open some primitive chump’s front door, smashing all their robotic guards about the place, and chuckling into the night with all their hard-earned cash. Which is precisely why I have created The Swindle for your PlayStation. The Swindle is a 2D RPGish, roguelike-like platformer about pulling off various burglaries in a stylized steampunk/cyberpunk London. How many of those have you played this year? None, hopefully. Each building is procedurally generated: everything from the layout, what’s in it, what security measures it has, the address — it’s all generated on the fly, meaning no two heists are ever the same. From your airship up in outer space you’ll be commanding a group of randomly-generated thieves on a string of increasingly-daring heists, in an effort to steal enough money to upgrade your thieves with the kind of cool gadgets necessary to pull off bigger and better heists. Get spotted, and the game turns on a dime. It’s no longer a sneaky-sneaky stealthy experience, it suddenly becomes an all-out action race against the clock as you desperately set about trying to hack as many computers as you can before The Police inevitably show up and ruin everyone’s fun. If that all sounds like your kind of thing: congratulations, you’re a sociopath. But it’s fine, you can live out your Victorian bot-smashing fantasies from the comfort of your living room. The Swindle is out today on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. It is cross buy, and I really, really hope you enjoy it. View the full article
  4. I’m Benjamin Crocker, from Hapa Games, and I am proud to announce that Ascendant will be released on PS4 August 25th! Ascendant is a side-scrolling roguelike beat ‘em up where you’ll take on the role of a demigod in a war against your rivals. As you make your way through this brutal realm, you’ll find an assortment of weapons, armor, spells, and Blessings that will help you battle to supremacy and your divine throne. We loved making Ascendant, we have a blast playing it, and you should try it out. One of the main features in the game is the Blessings system. Blessings are boons granted to the demigods that dramatically change and improve their abilities as they battle through each realm. They can be slotted into either your weapon, armor, or spell and provide a distinct power-up depending on which Blessing has been placed there. A good example is from an early-game Blessing you can find called The Blessing of Agni. Agni, as the Hindu god of fire, is a fire-based Blessing. If you slot it into your weapon, you will have a chance to apply a fire damage-over-time effect to your enemy with each melee strike. If you slot it into your spell, your spells will now explode on impact. Slotted into armor, Agni will explode every time you take damage. There are over twenty Blessings just like this one to find, unlock, and improve the demigods. Some examples include a double jump, poison spells, a berserker rage, and a giant shark that eats wounded enemies. Here is a little insight into the game’s development. Ascendant started as a kernel of an idea while we were graduate students at FIEA. We were finishing up our large-scale capstone projects and were trying to figure out what to do next. At the time, there was a huge influx of incredible (and sometimes less incredible) roguelikes from the indie scene and we played all of them. Many of us grew up playing old-school brawlers, so blending these two genres into our own vision was natural. We would brainstorm game mechanics over pints in downtown Orlando, and imagine potential art styles in the the school’s hallways between classes. Our last semester gave us the chance to turn all of our ideas and concepts into a real game. We started up Hapa Games, and then it was a non-stop sprint. We went from starting production in August 2013 to graduating in December with a strong prototype, a small following, a successful Kickstarter campaign, and a burgeoning Steam Greenlight page. After graduation we moved into the Garage. This is where the magic (and a lot of hard work) happened. Some of the original team split off to pursue their own path, but seven of us remained to finish the project. We set up a studio in that hot, muggy Garage, with Ascendant as our flagship. We had secondhand whiteboards, a dirty grey carpet, $40 desks from IKEA, monitors bought from a garage sale, a clattering AC unit, and a dart board. It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t swanky. But it was perfect; our own private indie mecca. We couldn’t have had a better place to create Ascendant. Obviously, there were challenges. With the freedom to do anything we optimistically gave ourselves a very short amount of time to release. We added some exciting features while others had to be cut or drastically reduced in scope. There was a sense of personal responsibility for every dev; if I don’t complete this thing, no one else will. Days and weeks started to blend together. Our abhorrent sleep schedules became a running joke. There were disagreements, but emotions were as high as our hopes and our motivation was steadfast. Triumph and hardship were doled out together, driven by adrenaline to get this thing done. However, as rapidly as we iterated and as demanding as our work became, the core of Ascendant – brawler roguelike dungeon crawler – never left focus. And then suddenly, the game was out. It was glorious. Now we’re a month away from releasing on PS4. It’s been a weird, incredible journey so far. This is Ascendant. We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we did making it. 5. What does a ninja, story-telling king, and a cyberpunk swindler have in common? They all star in games coming to PlayStation this week! What a coincidence! Platforming fanatics, take note: N++ is out this week on PS4 and comes packed with literally thousands of hand-crafted levels. Brimming with nail-biting challenges and brutal enemies, N++ presents old-school platforming with a modern polish. Meanwhile, a legendary game series returns in King’s Quest: A Knight to Remember. Help guide King Graham as he recounts a life of adventures to his daughter. 6. Hey kid! You wanna hear a secret? Because, friends, we’ve been saving a juicy one for a long time now… Anime enthusiasts inevitably ask when they see the game, “So… can you turn into a mech?†And we always respond with, “Oh man! That would be cool!†Well, guess what? You can freaking turn into a mech in Galak-Z! What is this “Mech†blasphemy you keep ranting about?! The Mech mode is a whole new way to play Galak-Z. Get up in an enemy’s face, slice him in two with your sword, or grab him with your extending arm, smash his guts, then throw his scrapped remains into an oncoming bad guy for a double-explosion fireworks show. You needn’t worry too much about taking damage either, as your huge Directional Shield will deflect and absorb even the most deadly attacks when timed right. Plus, the deadly environment is now your best friend, as you take and fling what you need from it — asteroids, spikes, explosives — relentlessly at any enemy stupid enough to appear in your sights. So what? How is this different than Ship gameplay, Mechman?! Rather than fighting from afar whilst dodging like a pro, the Mech is all about turning the tables and pressuring the bad guys instead. One on one, especially versus smaller zippy enemies, the Mech is vicious. It can grab an enemy even from a distance, pull them close and beat them to death without resistance or mercy. Against many enemies, what it lacks in missiles it makes up in the ability to throw the explosive elements of the environment, or can dispatch multiple enemies at once with charged sword attacks that sweep in a great arc. Defensively, the Direction Shield gives extra damage absorption on top of regular shields, and like with the Juke, more skillful players will be able to use their timing to negate attacks altogether by deflecting them. Best of all, the Mech requires no upgrades to use all of the skills listed above, making it your weapon of choice at the start of a Season when your Ship is still thin on awesome upgrades. Of course, switching between the two when desired is the most effective. But…you probably limit how much I can switch between the Ship and the Mech, right? Actually, the player can transform from Mech to Ship, and back again, with the touch of a button! Unlimited transforming means you can unleash a barrage of missiles to obliterate shields then speed in sword raised for the kill, or perhaps just pluck an unwary foe from the circus of smoke and explosions and beat him to a pulp. If things get too much, use your Directional Shield to take the brunt of damage and then transform to Ship form and fire as you reverse-boost away to safety and victory at once. The possibilities are endless! The full might of the Galak-Z is yours to discover, as both Mech and Ship form, on August 4th. Raj Joshi & Tom Hart, Designer View the full article

  8. One of my favorite television shows is How It’s Made. There’s something hypnotically satisfying about watching an assembly line repeat the same precise actions over and over again, assembling seemingly random components into a recognizable, finished product. In fact, I’m such a fan of assembly lines that we made a puzzle game about building factories called Infinifactory, and it’s coming soon to PS4! One of the most important things to know about Infinifactory is that it’s not just a puzzle game — it’s an open-ended puzzle game. Unlike a typical puzzle game, where each puzzle has a single solution that you’re trying to uncover, every puzzle in Infinifactory has countless solutions, each with different strengths and weaknesses. This allows you to compete against your friends and the world to build the fastest, smallest, and simplest factories possible. You’re not just “solving†a puzzle, you’re inventing your own solution! When we first released Infinifactory in early 2015, it was as an “early access†game on PC. Over the following six months we refined it heavily based on player feedback, and even added four additional sets of levels, effectively doubling the number of puzzles in the game. It’s gotten the time and attention to turn it into the greatest puzzle game we’ve ever made, and now it’s coming straight to you on PS4! View the full article
  9. G’day from Australia! Ed Orman here again, and I’m very excited to be able to finally announce that Submerged is coming to your PS4 on August 4th! And to kick things off, for a limited time PlayStation Plus members will receive a 20% discount on the game starting at launch. Submerged is a third-person, combat-free game in which you explore a mysterious, flooded city and discover the beauty of desolation in vast outdoor environments. You take on the role of Miku, a young girl who has brought her wounded brother to the city in their small fishing boat. Navigate the flooded city streets by boat, scale the drowned buildings, and use your telescope to scour the city for the supplies needed to save your dying sibling. As you explore the city at your own pace, you encounter the habitat that flourishes in this colorful place and discover hidden objects that piece together the story of a broken world and a broken family. Submerged won Best Audio at this years Freeplay Festival, largely due to the beautiful musical score provided by BAFTA-Award Winner Jeff Van Dyck. And Unreal Engine 4 lets us make the game visually stunning, so we’re really looking forward to finally having it in player’s hands. See you in August! View the full article
  10. Resident Evil and PS Vita fans, rejoice! The long wait is officially over — Resident Evil Revelations 2 is coming to PS Vita digitally on August 18th in North America. The episodic survival-horror scare-fest we’ve all come to know and love is ready for its handheld debut via digital release on PlayStation Store for $39.99. Made possible by the incredible team at Frima Studio, this collection brings all of the terror, action, and mystery of the console versions to PS Vita. With that in mind, I wanted to take a quick moment to confirm a few of the additions and content we’re packing into this killer compendium. On top of the four core episodes, you’ll also get two bonus episodes known as “The Struggle†and “Little Miss.†In the first, you’ll learn more about Moira’s struggle to survive on the island between Claire’s departure and Barry’s arrival. In the second, you’ll uncover more about the mysterious girl Natalia and her special abilities. Both episodes play a critical role in understanding these characters and how they play into the main campaign. Of course, Revelations 2 wouldn’t be complete without Raid Mode which makes a big comeback with 15 playable characters (HUNK and Wesker included) and over 200 missions for lightning-fast action on the go. Additional content includes a throwback map pack and multiple storage expansions for Weapons, Parts, and Albums. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got an awesome alternative costume pack chock full of new styles for your favorite characters in both Story and Raid modes (Natalia’s costume limited to Story Mode). So there you have it, the big news is out! With that, we’re heading back down that lonely hallway called development to add some finishing touches. All you handheld horror fans can look forward to getting your hands on Resident Evil Revelations 2 on August 18th and we’ll be keen to hear your thoughts on it! Oh, and as a friendly reminder, Raid Mode 2 player co-op over PlayStation Network is supported out of the gate, and we’ll be adding ad-hoc Raid Mode at a later date via a free content update. Stay tuned for more information. View the full article

  12. Hello fellow PlayStation fans. I’ve been playing tower defense games for a long time, starting from the early days when they were popular as Warcraft and Starcraft mods, then as Flash games, and lately on mobile devices. What I love about them is that they are easy to pick up and play but can be pretty deep. About two years ago, I decided to create one that is inspired by some of my old-time favorites, but with unique features to make it distinct. This wasn’t easy to do, especially on a console, but I believe we’ve made something truly enjoyable. And now, we’re super excited to announce the launch of The Castle Game for your PS4 on August 4th. What are the unique features? Well, ever played escort missions in a tower defense setting? Imagine using the defenses and walls to keep the enemies out, but also having safe and open paths for your allies to run through. Or how about having all the structures be destroyable? Now, some enemies are pretty dumb and will follow the path you cleverly designed, but the smarter ones will take out any structure that can pose a threat to them. So now you have defenses that can be damaged. To balance things out, you are given a giant hammer that can quickly repair structures. Engineers are also available to auto-repair any damaged structures nearby Repairing is just one of the few “battle actions†in The Castle Game. Other actions include a highly addictive lightning spell, focus fire which makes nearby defenders focus on a single enemy, the ability to call in reinforcements, a pretty cool Phoenix spell that is kind of like an air-strike, and a super-powerful Chaos spell that you’ll end up just itching to use as soon as it’s ready. Did I mention that all the defenses and spells can be upgraded through the Armory? These baddies just don’t stand a chance when you have a fully upgraded Catapult with the Chaos spell activated. Just don’t let a Corruptor sneak in and mind control that Catapult. With three different game modes, a huge arsenal of defenses including ranged and melee defenders, traps, and spells, and a wide variety of enemies that can bomb, freeze, and take control of your defenses, we think you’ll have a blast building and defending your own castle on August 4th. 14. LEAP Game Studios is a relative newcomer to the gaming industry. It was just a few years ago, before the company was formed, that at the Global Game Jam 2012 we spent a weekend building game prototypes. Based on our mutual passion for video games and the momentum we gathered at the game jam, we decided to start LEAP Game Studios and build upon Squares, one of the prototypes we developed at the event. In brief, Squares is a reflex puzzle game where the goal is to turn all the blue squares gray. However, the game is not just about puzzle solving skills. It is also timed, so you need to have lightning-speed reflexes and attempt to finish each level as quickly and precisely as possible. Also, throughout the levels, you will find squares of different types that will add new game mechanics and additional ways to interact with them. The game allows you to compare your best scores and accomplishments with that of your friends and others via leaderboards and Trophies. We also included a level editor to allow players to create their own levels, which they will be able to share through the PlayStation Network in a future patch. As for the soundtrack, we have teamed with French musicians Adrien Maljournal and Teninké Camara, who will add electronic tunes to the game sessions. Taking Squares from a game jam prototype to a mobile and console-ready game was challenging to say the least. As Nathan Vella from Capy has said, during a game jam, it is relatively “easy†to develop a game because everyone is highly motivated given the time pressure, and the game only needs to provide 15 minutes of entertainment. It is much more difficult to expand on an idea and create a game that is equally fun for hours while staying motivated throughout the entire development process. For us, one of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to add more layers of complexity to the game while maintaining a simple game mechanic and minimalistic design. We prototyped dozens of levels, which we then narrowed down to the ones we thought were the most fun and challenging. After nearly two years of tweaking and development, Squares is being introduced as a full-fledged game with 80+ levels and specific PlayStation Vita touch features. Squares has been developed with the support of the PlayStation Incubation Program. The incubation program team has been an amazing resource for us since the inception of Squares and we are profoundly grateful for their support. The development of Squares has been an exciting beginning for us as console developers, and we look forward to partnering with the Incubation Program to introduce the many other games we currently have in the pipeline for PlayStation. 15. Hello PlayStation Nation! At Treyarch we’re constantly challenging our team to do the best work of their lives with each and every game we create. Last month, we had a chance to sit down to discuss how we make games and our ambitions for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 with host Wil Wheaton as a part of the original series Conversations with Creators. That episode is now available for FREE on your PS3 and PS4 through PlayStation Store and at the YouTube link below: From the origins of the Call of Duty franchise, to the introduction of Zombies, to our latest creation Black Ops 3, with three distinct game modes, we discussed all things that make Treyarch Call of Duty games unique and a ton of fun to play. And something cool for the fans from our friends at PlayStation: beginning this afternoon, PlayStation Store is discounting a TON of iconic Call of Duty games and DLC, including the first two installments of the Black Ops franchise. The Call of Duty community’s support and passion has always meant a lot to us, and helps fuel our drive to deliver the signature Black Ops experiences you’ve come to love and expect. I hope this conversation further fuels that excitement, and come this November you’ll once again join us for Black Ops 3. We hope you enjoy the show! Cheers! View the full article

  17. Tembo The Badass Elephant – out tomorrow on PS4 – is the type of game I’ve always wanted to make. As a kid growing up in England in the ‘90s, I would play a lot of platform games on the SNES and Mega Drive, and then come up with my own characters and game ideas, sketching them out with coloured pencils. I never really grew out of it, and ended up working in the games industry, in London at first, moving to Japan later, eventually joining Game Freak about five years ago. Game Freak are most famous as the creators of Pokémon, but they have a history of making great action games too, like Pulseman for the Mega Drive, or Drill Dozer for the Game Boy Advance. I pitched the company my idea for a new mascot character game, Tembo The Badass Elephant, and they liked it. After we made a demo version, they greenlit the project for production. The starting point for the game was the character of Tembo himself: a big, powerful elephant commando who can bulldoze almost anything in his path. Tembo comes from the jungle island of Tuskland, where he fought in a human war alongside a colonel named Krenman. Many years after that war, Krenman is back in his native Shell City, when it’s invaded by an evil army known as PHANTOM. Krenman, realising he needs some serious wrecking power, calls upon his old friend Tembo to destroy the nefarious PHANTOM and save the city. A really important element of this game is the way that Tembo controls. We spent a lot of time making him feel heavy and strong, yet speedy and precise. You can stampede through enemies and objects, racking up combos as you go, then spring into a jump and butt stomp through meters of concrete in one satisfying chain of action. We wanted enemies to provide a good challenge for the badass Tembo, so the PHANTOM army will throw some heavy duty characters at you, from tanks and helicopters to massive mechanical bosses. Towards the end of the game the screen will be pretty much full of enemies trying to destroy you with missiles, bombs, and body blows. To realise this kind of frenetic, physics-based action, we needed to use the power of the current generation of hardware. Working on the PS4 was a great experience. The artists could fill the screen with high resolution textures and environmental effects, and the level designers could pack levels with objects and enemies to destroy. One thing I personally like about PS4 is the controller. For this game, the D-pad works well, and I like its placement and the way it feels. The controller’s vibration feels particularly good, and works nicely when you’re smashing up in-game scenery. It’s a new and exciting experience for Game Freak to be releasing a game for PlayStation 4. I hope you’re excited to play! View the full article

  20. Hey everyone! We just announced some big Street Fighter V news today at the Capcom panel here at EVO 2015. There is quite a lot of information to take in, so buckle down and read carefully! First and foremost, Street Fighter V will feature a brand new service-based approach with regards to post-launch content. With this approach come several key changes to our content strategy: The initial release is the only disc you will ever need to own All balance and system adjustments will be available for free All post-launch gameplay related content will be earnable for free by playing the game That’s right; Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content (such as characters) for free, simply by playing the game. Long gone are the days of forced Super and Ultra upgrades! Enjoy free balance updates as soon as they become available, and find and choose the post-launch characters that you want to get. Pre-order for Beta Access Speaking of characters, Street Fighter V will launch with a core roster of 16 playable characters, with 4 of them being brand new fighters to the Street Fighter universe. Post-launch, we will be adding new characters to the roster on a continuous basis, which will provide new content for players to enjoy. Again, every post-launch character released will be earnable for free through gameplay! Looking back on the Street Fighter IV series, we had always released bundles of content all at once, like with Super Street Fighter IV and Ultra Street Fighter IV. While these one-time updates did revive interest in the series every few years, it was difficult to keep players engaged for long periods of time unless they were competitive. This also punished players who took a break from playing the game, because if they wanted to start again in a few years, they would be forced to purchase an upgrade to join the existing player pool who had already moved on to a new version. On top of that, this old method also forced players to purchase all of the new content, even if only a few characters may have appealed to them. With Street Fighter V, we want to change the way that players interact with the series, and create an ever-evolving environment for players to enjoy. By releasing new characters on a regular basis, it will ensure that there is always new content to look forward to in the short term, and it prevents the competitive environment from ever becoming stale. Players also have more freedom in their decisions, as they only need to purchase or earn the content that appeals to them. This will also create more long-term engagement, because the more you play the game, the more you are rewarded and can earn new content. The player base is never shrunk by requiring a paid update like in years past. Players can take a break from the game, but then come back at any time and continue to play with the characters they already own, with the newest gameplay balance. We are able to execute this service-based model by introducing an in-game economy to Street Fighter V. There are two types of currency that make the economy go round: Fight MoneyThis is basic currency that players earn through playing the game. Once players accumulate enough Fight Money, they can use it to earn new post-launch gameplay content, such as characters, for free!ZennyThis is premium currency that players can purchase with real money to immediately gain access to post-launch content. We will be using later beta phases to test the economy and ensure it works in a fair way for everyone. Phew! That was a lot of info, so we hope it all makes sense to everyone. We are extremely excited about this new post-launch strategy, and we’ll be talking about more specific details at a later date. For now, we hope everyone is excited to start playing and earning content! View the full article

  24. Hellblade, Ninja Theory’s forthcoming third-person action game isn’t a title that shies away from tackling difficult subjects. A story told through the lens of Celtic warrior Senua’s faltering mental health, it’s testament to Ninja Theory’s vision that they’re creating a game that’s both progressive and honest – and as a recent hands-on play through demonstrated, an immensely entertaining, playable experience with a refreshing sense of freedom. “We’re trying to make a game with that indie spirit but AAA production values. So we’re able to take creative risksâ€, development manager Dominic Matthews tells me at one of Hellblade’s. “The mental health theme is one that we’re treating with a lot of respect. Movies, TV, art and literature always tackle challenging subjects, but games tend not to – and if they do, it’s not always in a particularly positive way. We’re not trying to be educational, but if we can deliver a truthful portrayal of Senua’s mental illness, then maybe some people will understand it a bit better.†Ninja Theory are known for their visceral, intense games, and iconic lead characters – such as DmC’s reimagined Dante, Enslaved’s Monkey and Heavenly Sword’s Nariko. Has it been tough to balance that trademark style with such a challenging subject matter? “We want to deliver something that’s truthful and also specific to Senua – but at the same time, make a game for people who are fans of what we do; we’re known for combat and a certain art style and deep stories. First and foremost it has to be an entertaining, compelling game,†explains Matthews. “I think there are similarities between Senua and previous Ninja Theory characters, but we want to create a character that’s memorable and heroic for her own reasons.†At its heart Hellblade is an action game with combat that is very much focused on brutal one-on-one encounters that will test your timing, tactics and knowledge of Senua’s fighting style. “Senua has one weapon and her entire move set is available from the start. It’s up to you as a player to explore that system and to master it and to uncover all of the nuances of Senua’s battle style. She’s a Celtic warrior, fighting against a Viking clan, so that’s what she does, she’s awesome at fighting! It is a battle and it’s relentless.†Approaching the E3 demo’s first fight is a punishing experience. As I move into a clearing in the woods, a hulking, blade-wielding warrior towers over Senua and, for the first few encounters brutally sends her sprawling into the surrounding undergrowth. But soon, the rhythm of the fight takes over and a series of blocks, parries, nimble dodges and carefully timed attacks gives her the upper hand. “We want every fight to feel like it matters. We won’t just throw fodder enemies at you – the combat is deep, complex and each encounter will need you to think about your tactics, not just crowd control.†The brutality of each combat set-piece harks back to genuine historical events – and Senua’s place in this era gives meaning and context to her situation. “The story is based on a period in history when the Orkney Islands were invaded by Vikings who wiped out the Pictish Celts – Senua is a survivor of that invasion, and the story is her coming to terms with that violence and trauma that was caused by that event. “The combat in the game and the violence that Senua’s involved in isn’t a result of her mental health; everything in the story is her reality, that she has to deal with.†Even at this early stage, Hellblade feels like a confident, exciting and ambitious take on a genre that has always felt at home on PlayStation. Suffice to say, you’ll be hearing more about it soon, right here on PlayStation Blog. View the full article
  25. Since we launched on PS4 in November 2014, our team has been delighted at the audience Never Alone has found on PlayStation. We’ve received wonderful and supportive feedback from players, including many who felt a personal connection with the themes of the game, which was developed inclusively with members of the Alaska Native community. We were a PS Plus free game for the month of April, and seeing the PS4 community embrace the game was both exhilarating and a little overwhelming. All of this makes it especially exciting to talk about two upcoming Never Alone releases for PlayStation: Never Alone: Foxtales, our first DLC, and Never Alone for PS3 and PS Vita. Never Alone: Foxtales Throughout the development of the original Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), we immersed ourselves in hundreds of Alaska Native stories before deciding to base the game on the tale of Kunuuksaayuka. Never Alone: Foxtales features three new levels, inspired by another of these amazing stories. Working on Foxtales has given our team a chance to build on the elements of the original game that players really responded to with more complex and varied puzzles, new abilities for each of the characters and new environments. We decided to base Foxtales on the story of ‘The Two Coastal Brothers,’ as told by Willie Panik Goodwin, Sr. The interdependence between the two brothers in this traditional tale was really compelling because in many ways it reflected the interdependence between Nuna and Fox. One brother is an excellent hunter and fighter. The other is a strong swimmer. To defeat the main antagonist, they must work together, each of their unique talents supporting the other and ultimately proving crucial to their success. This idea of interdependence is not only an important theme in many Alaska Native tales, it also creates opportunities for fun gameplay. We found that players of the original game responded best to puzzles that required them to use the special abilities of the two player-controlled characters in unexpected ways. We were able to create more interesting and varied puzzles in Foxtales by embracing this approach, casting Nuna and Fox (the main characters of the original game) as the two characters from the traditional story and giving each character new abilities. Nuna, for example, can row and steer an umiaq (a sealskin canoe) and Fox can interact with spirits to change the flow of underwater currents. As all this talk about canoes and currents implies, Foxtales is set in a different (and decidedly more nautical) environment than the original game: the waters and coasts of Northwest Alaska. At the risk of stating the obvious, Alaska is a pretty big place and is home to a diverse set of terrain and environments. Those environments also change with the seasons, so things aren’t as uniformly snowy as in the original game (which did involve finding the source of an endless blizzard, after all). We made a decision early in our design process to set Foxtales not only in a different location but also in a different season: the Arctic spring. This not only let us include new game mechanics, but also let us develop art and level designs that depict the beauty of Alaskan environments that couldn’t have appeared in the original game – like an arctic prairie with the first blooms of spring peaking through the snowpack, the rapids and waterfalls of a river fed by melting snow or the subterranean lair of an unexpected new villain. Never Alone for PS3 and PS VitaOne of our hopes for Never Alone is that the game introduces Alaska Native culture to audiences that may not have been exposed to it before. To that end, our team has started work on bringing Never Alone to two additional PlayStation platforms: PS3 and PS Vita. Our progress has been encouraging, and we expect the game to be available for both platforms this Fall. The original Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is available now in the PlayStation Store for PS4. Never Alone: Foxtales will be available as DLC for the original game on PS4 through PlayStation Store on July 28th, 2015. Have questions about Never Alone and Foxtales? Let us know in the comments!
