Suit up! You can finally climb aboard the GALAK-Z as it launches today! If we’ve been lucky enough to have you following us, you already know that GALAK-Z is an homage to our anime dreams. Piloting your prototypical craft is equally fun to fly as it is to transform into a mech and slash your way through an onslaught of wiley enemies. Procedural missions and music, extensive combinations of upgrades and passives, intelligent warring factions surrounded by a living and hostile environment all come together into a rogue-lite wrapped in the construct of a Saturday morning cartoon. And bringing all of this to life takes the help and talent of many different folks. We’d like to pay homage to them in this launch day blog post. AI Stands for Awesomely Intelligent Cyntient has been the enabler to our fantasy of AI enemies that are truly intelligent and collectively aware. Collaborating from the beginning to handcraft the AI to our specs, Cyntient has helped to set the stage for enemy encounters that feel like you’re rastling with an organized group of human hooligans. Constantly on patrol, barking out what they’re seeing and coordinating with one another to keep you running for cover, each unit within each faction brings its own personality and set of strengths. Scntfc Beat DownScntfc surfs the wave between the rhythmic eeriness of John Carpenter and a spacedust-infused nostalgic synth vibe. Setting the soundscape for intense dogfighting in the endless vastness of space, Scntfc defines the mood and aesthetic of each location, episode, and boss fight. Adding to the variety and the complexity of creating this soundtrack is the procedural music system that mixes multiple layers of different tracks to constantly match the shifting mood and action of each encounter. You Don’t Have to Yell No Saturday morning cartoon is complete without colorful voices from the actors who serve as your chaperones through the backstory and the moment to moment fight to save Earth. Our daring and quick-witted pilot is A-Tak, voiced by Michael Sinterniklaas — who might ring a bell as Dean Venture from The Venture Brothers, or from The Vanishing of Ethan Carter… or from the gaggle of other games or film and TV work he’s done. His calm and seasoned counterpart on the research vessel U.S.S. Axelios is Beam, voiced by Sarah Elmaleh — who starred in Skulls of the Shogun, Gone Home and more. And rounding out the crew of the Axelios is Chet Williamson as the deranged but daring Admiral Akamoto. Chet lent his unique and powerful voice to Skulls of the Shogun as well as other titles. Made in JapanOur in-house artists have set an amazing visual tone, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to invite inspiration from famed Japanese artist Katsuya Terada. We seized the opportunity to work with one of our favorite artists to give life to Season 3’s boss as well as to keep things fresh as you progress through GALAK-Z. Terada-san’s previous work can be seen in multiple The Legend of Zeldas, Prince of Persia, multiple Tekkens, and many more as well in other mediums. This collaboration was yet another tip of the hat to the fact that the last year of production on GALAK-Z was split between the Seattle and Kyoto branches of 17-BIT. Hall PassThere’s so much more that goes into making a game happen than all the content. For the past two years, we’ve had the tireless support of all kinds of great folks at Sony from around the globe. Everything from believing in the game to helping get the word out to making an A-Tak costume to allowing us to release and ramble in the public eye as we are right now. Such great people, genuine support and camaraderie. We couldn’t have done it without you and your enthusiasm for indie gaming. Bringing It HomeMany thanks to our friends and family. For your playtesting and feedback and for putting up with our devotion to making something that we truly care about. And to our new friends and family, we invite you to check out GALAK-Z. It is our modern love letter to old school anime and gaming. Keep up with us at GALAK-Z.com, on Twitter @_17-BIT, and on Facebook. View the full article

Trans-Galactic Tournament (TGT) is launching its Open Beta in the Americas today, but before you head to PlayStation Store to start breaking skulls and causing mayhem, we gotta share some of the surprises you’ll find in Trans-Galactic Tournament on PS4. We’re out to change your idea of what a battle arena game can be, so mow down your jungle and pave your lanes — here’s the top 7 weird things that make TGT the fastest, wildest battle arena game in the universe. 1. Yeah, League’s Cool, but it Needs More DeathmatchSo you’ve just bought TGT for no money (Because it’s free!), and you jump right into a match. Now you’re in some place called Globaber Factory, everybody’s running on these robot-making platforms, and there’s angry gumdrops in the background and nothing makes sense ever. Welcome to Trans-Galactic Tournament! Once your brain adjusts to the madness, you’ll notice how fast the combat really is. That’s because our game modes are way more FPS than MOBA. Plunderball is Capture the Flag, Conquest is like King of the Hill but everywhere, and Annihilation is straight up Deathmatch. Look, you can take the developer out of the 90’s LAN Party, but you can’t take the 90’s LAN Party out of the developer. 2. Why Not Push Dudes Off Cliffs?Lots of games focus on “last hits,†but we think a good first hit should be rewarded too. That’s why our maps have full-on instant death pits and champs that are tailor-made to push unsuspecting dupes to their doom. Be the Scar of the arena — push somebody off a cliff today! 3. At Least One Character Should Look Like George Washington If you can cross the Delaware and the line of good taste in one character design, you should always go for it. 4. Need a Ladder? Jump On Your Friends and Enemies!Early in the game, you’re probably thinking, So when I hit the X button, I jump? Why can I jump? Because jumping is awesome! In TGT, you can reach high ledges and shortcuts with well-placed jumps off the heads of your friends and enemies. This is the most important game design achievement of 2015. 5. That One Level With the Pirate ShipsWe thought it’d be a real lark if there was a level where you’re under a constant barrage of cannon fire during a pirate raid on an island military fort. Guess what — it is! And yes, they do have pirate ships in space. 6. Oozello, Meet Jake, Our Lead ProgrammerTeam: Hey, Jake. What if one of the champions was a short-order cook? Jake: Sure. Team: And he throws sandwiches on the ground. Jake: Got it. Team: Then he eats the sandwiches off the ground and it heals him. Jake: Ok. Team: And he’s made of snot. Jake: Please stop. 7. Badger Sauce! Badger Sauce! Badger Sauce!TGT has a lot of intergalactic sponsors, but none contain more processed badgers than Badger Sauce. One day we found this video on our development server. We don’t know where it came from, and we’re a little scared. We’d love to hear about the surprises you find when you play TGT. Download the open beta for free from PlayStation Store, and post about it below in the comments. We’re excited to answer any questions you have. Don’t forget to hit www.playtgt.com for the latest TGT info. See you in the arena! View the full article

I’m excited to share that, starting tomorrow, you’ll have even more ways to enjoy the 125+ games in the PlayStation Now game streaming subscription, with the addition of PS Vita and PS TV support. Also this month there are five new titles joining the ever-expanding library of PS Now games, including the award-winning God of War III, along with Dynasty Warriors 8, MX vs. ATV Supercross, Bomberman Ultra, and The Last Guy. There’s never been a better time to sign up for the 7-day free trial and experience game streaming at its best. We’ve also expanded the list of PS Now enabled devices to include many of the latest models of 2015 Sony TVs. Visit our PS Now page to see the full list of supported devices, including PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PS TV, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players, and Samsung Smart TVs. Here’s a closer look at the newly added PS Now games in August! God of War III Developed exclusively for PS3, God of War III is the final installment of the multi-million unit-selling trilogy. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment’s Santa Monica Studios, God of War III will bring epic battles to life with stunning graphics and an elaborate plot that puts Kratos at the center of carnage and destruction as he seeks revenge against the Gods who have betrayed him. Dynasty Warriors 8 Dynasty Warriors 8 returns to the kingdoms of Wei, Wu, Shu, and Jin, through the actions of historical military and political figures of the time, as they fight to gain control over the Three Kingdoms of China. Dynasty Warriors 8 takes the much loved series one step further, merging numerous replay elements such as multi-endings and extra modes with synergies between action and game systems for a deeper, more dramatic story than ever. Take to the battlefield with the greatest warriors in history and carve your path to glory! MX vs. ATV Supercross Rip, jump, and scrub your way around 17 tracks and try to cross the finishing line first against more than 40 official riders and harvest all that motocross glory. Choose between bikes or ATVs, multiple game modes including Career, Single races, and various local and online multiplayer events with up to 12 players. Perform amazing tricks to impress your fans or just whip over jumps to finish the race first. Customize your rider with items from more than 80 licensed motocross companies and whirl up dirt and dust on your way to victory. Bomberman Ultra Bomberman Ultra gives everyone who picks up the controller the chance to bomb their way to victory. Play offline, or hop online to play against up to 8 people from around the world! Pick from 6 game modes on any of 14 levels, mix and match over 50 character costumes with over 150,000 possible combinations, and choose exactly which of 16 power-ups you want to appear in each level! Stat-tracking leaderboards will show just how good you are. The Last Guy The earth has been struck by a mysterious purple beam of light, and everyone touched by it has turned into a giant zombie. You are the chosen one and it is up to you to rescue the last survivors on earth by leading them to safety through zombie-infested streets. With a classic arcade style overhead view, make your way through detailed real-world cities and use your heat vision to find people hiding in buildings. Then lead them to the Escape Zone before time runs out in this frantic, addictive game. Personally I can’t wait to fire up God of War III on my Vita so I can guide Kratos on his epic quest for revenge when I’m away from my TV! See you next month. View the full article

Hello, PlayStation.Blog! I’m Alex, from Hello Games. Hope you’re well! How’s your summer going? Ours? We’re kinda recovered from E3, where Sean showed off live No Man’s Sky gameplay for the first time. It has been a big relief that people seemed to like it. You can’t know just how scary it is to show a game as open-ended as No Man’s Sky live on a stage for an audience of millions. Since then, we’ve also been super proud that IGN has devoted July’s IGN First to No Man’s Sky. We hope you’ve had a chance to see some of the amazing articles that they’ve published, maybe including this 18-minute video of Sean exploring a planet. We’ve been thinking, though, that No Man’s Sky is pretty good at hiding its secrets, and that there there are some facts about the game that might not be so obvious — facts that help it all make sense, and come alive. So we’ve put together a list of 41 things about the game that you might not realize. We hope you enjoy them, and thanks so much for all your support. It’s been so amazing to share with you what we’ve been doing over the past few months. Things about space The universe isn’t actually infiniteComputers don’t really do infinity very well. But there are 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets in the universe. If you visit each one for a single second, it will take you 585 billion years to see them all, so it may as well be. The universe isn’t randomEverything exists for a reason, and is governed by maths. Maths means every detail is always consistent and makes sense, the result of hundreds of rules we’ve made to make a sci-fi universe we want to explore. And anyway, computers just aren’t very good at random, either. The universe isn’t stored on your hard disk or on server somewhereThe world around you is generated by your PS4 at the point you visit it. Leave and it’s all thrown away, but if you return it is generated again exactly as it was. This also means the game will be completely playable offline. No Man’s Sky isn’t an MMOThe sheer size of the universe means that everyone is going to be super far apart, and it’s super unlikely that people will even visit the same planets. There are bots exploring the universe right nowWe have sent a set of bots out into the void to send back to us gifs of planets. We can quickly review the gifs, lots at a time, to see what kinds of things are out there, and ensure it’s varied and interesting. Things about exploring There isn’t a story to followThere are no cutscenes or characters, but there is a big objective: getting to the center of the universe. We don’t want to tell you a story, we want you to tell your own. No Man’s Sky is about your journey. You will make true discoveriesBe the first to visit a planet, or be the first to scan a species of creature, and you will be recorded as its discoverer when you upload it at a beacon for all the world to see. You can also choose to name them. (There will be filters!) The Atlas is everything everyone has ever discoveredThe No Man’s Sky symbol stands for the database of all the things that players have discovered and chosen to share with the world. It’s perhaps the most important thing in the universe, and will contain findings that even we have no idea about. You’ll find ancient artifacts and crashed shipsThey may lead to you discovering new technologies, which can give your ship, suit, and multitool new or improved abilities.A jetpack is an explorer’s best friendIt can get you out of all sorts of trouble, and take you to places you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Things about planets Planets are defined by their position in spaceIf they’re close to their sun they’ll tend to be more barren; further away and they’ll tend to be cold. The planets in between tend to be richer with life. Most planets are barrenFew planets will be dense with plant life and animals. Most will be barren, but even barren planets can be sources of great wealth. Planets can be toxicSome planets are death traps, with radiation or other hazards that will kill you in minutes. To survive you’ll need to upgrade your suit.Every distant mountain is a real placeNo Man’s Sky doesn’t only generate the environment immediately around you. It also generates the whole planet at a lower level of detail, so every distant object on the horizon is a real place that you can go to.Planets have days and nightsFly down to the night side of a planet, and you’ll find the land in darkness. Different creatures will be awake while daytime creatures sleep. Things about ships It’s worth upgrading your shipShips offer varying capacity for being upgraded, whether speed, maneuverability, jump drive range, or weapon power. You can only have one ship at a timeChoose a ship that suits what you want to do, whether trading (large cargo capacity), fighting (good speed and weapons) or exploring (a long jump drive distance). Want to do something new? You can always get a new one. You’ll shop for new shipsSpace stations sell a rolling stock of ships. If you see one you want, you’ll need to grab it before new stock comes in. You won’t be left without a shipIf you die and have no money, a basic ship is always available for free. It won’t have a hyperdrive, but you’ll be able to fly to planets again to rebuild. You need fuelYou can fly for as long as you like in a star system, but to make jumps between systems you’ll need hyperdrive fuel, which you can buy from space stations or mine from planet surfaces. Things about combat You can get a wanted levelUpsetting the balance of planets by mining them too heavily or killing creatures will see you being hunted down by the Sentinels, and attacking craft in space will attract the attention of the police. The more you do, the stronger they will retaliate. The Sentinels aren’t everywhereNot every planet is policed, making these lawless playgrounds valuable sources of resources.Space is not quietFactions constantly vie for territory across the entire universe. Choose to help one faction and it may reward you. Attack another and it’ll remember. But you can also try to avoid conflict completely. You can side with factionsIf you’re friendly enough with a faction, it can provide you with support that might protect you as you face its rivals.Your multitool is an adaptable weaponMultitools have a basic firing mode, but some come with different, more powerful attacks, or you might find technologies to upgrade them.Death isn’t the endBut it’s a problem. If you die on a planet, you’ll find yourself revived back at your ship having lost what you hadn’t stowed and discoveries you hadn’t uploaded. If you die in space, you find yourself revived at the nearest space station, without your ship, items and discoveries. Things about creatures Planets are populated by unique creaturesCreatures are procedurally generated, with wildly varying shapes, sizes, colorations, and behaviours. You will discover countless new species on your journey.Animal calls are procedurally generatedWe’ve created special software that models throats, allowing animal calls to be defined by the shape and sizes of their bodies. Every planet’s soundscape is unique.Animals may attack youBut think twice about retaliating. If Sentinels see you kill a creature they’ll attack you. It’s often best to try to scare creatures or run away, and preserve the natural balance of the planet. Animals follow daily routinesThey will go down to bodies of water to drink and sleep at night, while others will only come out at dark. Some animals hunt othersYou’ll see food chains in action, with species being predated by others. You might find that you’re far from being at the top of the chain. Things about the economy Units are the universe’s currencyYou’ll earn Units for many things: selling resources at trading posts, shooting down pirates, uploading discoveries to the Atlas.Market prices for resources varyYou might find lucrative trade routes, mining in one system and selling in another. It might be worth investing in a ship with lots of cargo space to take full advantage.Space is busy with trade convoysFreighters, led by capital ships, steadily travel along trade routes, sending ships down to trading posts as they go. You can choose to attack them and steal their resources, but you’ll find them heavily defended, and pirates might have the same idea… Resources aren’t just for tradingYou’ll need them to craft technologies into upgrades. The rarest resources can only be found in certain types of system.Efficient mining requires certain upgradesYour multitool can always destroy resource crystals, but you’ll need to upgrade it to mine resources held in harder rock. Perhaps there are technologies that will provide greater yields… Things about the game It has amazing music65daysofstatic are Sean’s favorite band, and they’re making No Man’s Sky’s soundtrack album. We are incredibly excited about this.We held a concert at PlayStation Experience65daysofstatic came to Las Vegas with us and played a concert. It was incredible. Watch it here. The music will be procedural65daysofstatic’s soundtrack will be used to generate procedural music that’s influenced by where you are and what you’re doing. Full songs will play at specific points, but we’ll leave it to you to discover when and why…No Man’s Sky was inspired by classic sci-fiEspecially those amazing, vibrant book covers, which presented a vision of a future that wasn’t grim and in which technology and exploration were points of hope.Four people built what we showed for the announcementSince then, the No Man’s Sky team has grown, but only a little, to 13 people. We like it real small. View the full article

Hey everyone! Street Fighter V is about to get a lot more “beautiful†with the latest character reveal of the Spanish Ninja himself: Vega! Street Fighter V | PlayStation.com A mainstay in the franchise since his introduction in Street Fighter II, Vega believes that beauty is the truest form of strength and that he alone is the epitome of perfection. The mask he wears serves to protect his face from the blood of his victims, and his deadly three-pronged claw ensures he is able to dish out pain from a safe distance away. Learning ninjutsu at a young age from a Japanese acquaintance, Vega quickly shot up the ranks in Shadaloo, eventually becoming one of the four bosses of the criminal organization. Left: Vega art from Super Street Fighter II Right: Vega in Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Vega returns to Street Fighter V with a brand new look and new tricks up his frilly sleeves. Possessing his trademark speed and quickness, Vega now has access to two distinct fighting modes: with claw and without claw. That’s right, he now has the ability to sheathe his claw during battle in exchange for new moves, such as a command grab, as well as new attack properties, greatly changing the way he approaches each fight. Knowing when to toggle between the two styles will be the key to success, and it also allows for new combo possibilities. Conversely, Vega will no longer be able to pick up his claw once it’s knocked off, so knowing how to fight without the claw is a must! Players who enjoy tricky movement and the technical challenge of switching between claw/no-claw fighting styles will definitely find the beauty in Vega’s play style. V-Skill: Matador Turn Vega swiftly dodges the opponent’s incoming attack and chooses whether to launch a quick counterattack that knocks them down or not.V-Trigger: Bloody Kiss Vega throws a rose at high velocity towards the opponent. If it hits, he charges behind it and delivers a series of brutal slashes that devastate the enemy. The move can be done as an anti-air from crouch or as an air attack when jumping forward, making it an extremely versatile projectile attack, as well as a combo extender. Fans attending Gamescom this week will be able to experience the character first hand on the show floor at the Sony booth, so be sure to stop by! I’ll certainly be looking forward to seeing what players come up with once they get their hands on the character. Till next time! View the full article

The apocalypse has arrived. After two and a half years, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is out in just about a week, and to celebrate, we want to share the launch trailer for the game with you. We recently announced the cast list for the game — an amazing group of some of the best TV, film, and radio actors working in games in the UK. We’re delighted that the list is headed up by the fantastic Merle Dandridge, best known for her role as Alyx Vance in Half Life 2 and Marlene in The Last of Us. You might recognise her from the trailer, where she plays Dr. Katherine Collins, the brilliant astrophysicist at the heart of Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture’s mystery. If the trailer isn’t enough, and you can’t wait a week to get more of the game, then head over to the official site. For the last few weeks, we’ve been uploading exclusive content over there — radio interviews with Kate and her research assistant and husband, Dr. Stephen Appleton; excerpts from journals and textbooks; emergency leaflets to help orientate you to the apocalypse. There’s interviews with the team, more information about the production, and a series of secret codes to unravel — all of which will help you understand the mystery of Yaughton Valley just that little bit more. Finally, we know that lots of you outside the US have been checking out the awesome dynamic theme that’s been available on the US store. We’re happy to let you know that PS+ customers across the world will also be able to grab this when they purchase the game. We’re hugely excited about the game coming out — really hope you all love playing it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it. It’s been an incredible couple of years and we’re very proud of the result. Keep on checking the game’s website and expect a couple more very cool exclusive features to hit between now and the end of the world. And remember — an emergency may occur at any time, without any warning, so be prepared. Keep your radios and televisions on at all times! View the full article

We recently announced our new Tearaway Unfolded Companion App, which will be releasing alongside the game when it launches next month. Today, we wanted to delve a little deeper into the app and share more about how it works. We’ve even made a shiny new video to show off the app and demonstrate the fun and exciting ways you can interact with the game, all from your couch! The Companion App works using the official PlayStation App, which you can currently download for free with your valid app store account on your preferred app store, for smart phones and tablets. You can also use the PS4 Link “Second-Screen†function on your PS Vita to run the Tearaway Unfolded Companion App. So when the game launches, you can use your portable devices as a second screen for the game! One of the main ways you can interact with the papery world using the app is through the trusty cutting mat. If you pick the scissors icon to the far left, you are taken to the app’s cutting mat where you can let your creative juices flow and draw whatever your heart desires! Draw a heart, a flower or whatever you fancy, hit the little stamp icon and your creation will be posted into the game where you’ll see your creation floating through the skies! You can also use your device’s camera (if it has one) to take photos of the real world, which can then be imported into the cutting mat to be cut and pasted however you want. Simply hit the camera icon to launch your camera, and then start snapping away. Your photos can also be used to texturize the game world and transform whatever sheet of paper your Messenger is currently standing on! It’s also important when journeying through the world of Tearaway to leave your own papery mark, and what better way than by personalizing your Messenger! When you enter the Messenger customization screen, you can either use the app’s cutting mat to create new decorations and costumes, or you use your device’s camera to take photos that can be customized on the cutting mat to create your own unique Messenger! Fancy giving iota a beard? Or changing atoi’s eyes? It’s all possible with the app. A really cool thing about the app: it’s context sensitive, meaning that players controlling the app can directly affect what the player is currently playing through in the game itself. You could be customizing your Messenger on the TV while your friend uses the app to cut out a beard which will then appear on your Messenger in the game! If your friend takes a photo on the app, this will also appear in the game for you to cut up and edit on the big screen. And as you’re running through the game world discovering new lands and battling Scraps, anything made on the app (shapes, decorations, and photos) can be sent into the game, which will float through the air or pop up on the ground beneath your feet. It adds another layer to the fun. You can also use the app to access tearaway.me, your personal profile page for Tearaway online. You can see all your progress in the game, including any photos you’ve taken and which papercraft models you’ve collected. You can also use tearaway.me to see what the community has been up to, viewing other players’ photos and seeing how creative they’ve gotten with customization. We also regularly pick our favorites on there too for our “Community Picks†section, so you can check out what we’re loving that week. We hope you folks have fun interacting with the papery world and creating marvelous things! We can’t wait to see what you all make! Tearaway Unfolded comes out on September 8th in the US, 9th in Europe, and 11th in the UK. Pre-order today and receive the Crafted Edition loaded with lots of papery goodness! View the full article

About a month away from the release of Until Dawn on PS4, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jason Graves, the man responsible for scoring Supermassive Games’ branching interactive horror. Jason is an award-winning composer boasting an impressive CV, including work on The Order: 1886, Evolve, Tomb Raider and the Dead Space series. In short, when it comes to building atmosphere and tension, he has very few peers in the games business. With his work on Until Dawn wrapping up, he was kind enough to let us in on a few of his trade secrets and discuss how he’s been helping the game’s developers ratchet up the fear factor… How did you first get involved with Until Dawn? Jason Graves: I’ve been involved with it since 2011. From the very beginning, we all agreed on a shared vision for the music; an emotional checklist that we were looking for. We really wanted to place you physically in this mountain, and in this cabin. Until Dawn | PlayStation.com You’re surrounded by a group of friends so there are musical opportunities to have great character themes and some fun pieces, but also you need to be able to score the more ‘horrifying’ situations that make up most of the game. What is your creative process? Do you go into a project like this with a clear idea of what you want to produce? Jason Graves: The first thing I like to do is to have a long conversation with the game’s audio director – and that’s exactly what happened with Barney Pratt. I think we must have talked for three hours. It was a really good sign because, not only did we get along personally, but our creative views and perspective of what Until Dawn could do that other games maybe hadn’t in the past were right in line. It was very easy once I got off the phone with Barney to move forward with the main theme, which is what I like to do first. The idea is that the main theme, even if it is never really used in the game in one particular place, really encapsulates everything about the game that we’re trying to achieve. You’ve talked before about making ‘reactive’ music for Dead Space, where some instruments get louder with your proximity to threat. Did you use similar techniques in Until Dawn? Jason Graves: That’s more of an implementation idea; how the music is put in the game and how it plays back. Nowadays there’s third party software that does similar things with the music, which is wonderful because it means you don’t have to have an elaborate proprietary music system – it’s available to a lot of folks now and that’s a fairly common technique. We do use that quite a bit, especially during suspenseful scenes; maybe if there’s a door that you’re going to either go in or not, then you can have the music get louder or softer depending on how close you get to it. Your score for The Order 1886 put a big emphasis on choir, cello and viola. Are there any instruments you’ve brought to the fore in Until Dawn? How would you characterise the game’s ‘sound’? Jason Graves: That’s a great question. We have no violas in Until Dawn and we didn’t purposely do the opposite of what we did for The Order, but I wanted that space of the strings to have other things instead. Since it is a very cinematic score, a lot of the themes play in that space where the violas would have been. There’s this one little shaker that I have. It’s a goat-hoof shaker. It was actually featured a lot throughout the score to represent the mountains, the location, and the history of the people that used to live there. You can distinctively hear that throughout the main theme and some of the key tracks. I also wrote a two minute theme that has a couple different melodies in it, and is very tonally ambiguous – you can’t really tell if it’s major or if it’s minor. There are certain kinds of chords in there; is it happy, is it sad? I can’t really tell. And that was the point, because you have eight different characters in the game, you can play as all of them, and there’s a killer on the loose. What’s happening? Who’s the villain? Nobody really knows. There’s definitely an intentional ambiguity in the music. Until Dawn launches in North America on August 25th! In the meantime, have a listen to three of the game’s tracks below. Imagine you’re riding the bus and playing a great game on your PS Vita. The bus drives into a rain cloud, and… can that be? Now it’s raining inside the game! Later at home, thanks to the one-two punch of Cross Buy and Cloud Save, you pick up where you left off on your PS4. And when the sun sets outside your window, it becomes night in the level you were just playing! That’s what happens in our upcoming game, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon, thanks to the positional features of PS Vita and PS4. In Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon, out soon for PS4 and PS Vita, you play a jumping spider. You can walk on walls and ceilings, jump, and use your silk to create threads. Draw any shape with those threads and it’ll form a web, which is how you catch the variety of insects found at each location. As you make your way from room to room, you’ll slowly realize that you’re exploring an abandoned estate, one riddled with mysteries, clues, and puzzles. Like any good spider, you leave the place covered in cobwebs. Time and weather matter when on the hunt for bugs. At night, the fireflies and crickets emerge while moths circle around lights. When it rains, mosquitoes come out and inchworms dangle by threads. On a clear day, you might smack a hornet nest to do battle with its defenders, or carefully craft a strong web, required to trap the largest insects. And what dictates whether it’s day or night, rain or shine? The real world. Once you give your permission, the game determines where you are, looks up the time of day and current weather, and mirrors those in the game. So when the sun rises or the rain falls outside your window, the same thing happens inside your game at the mysterious Blackbird Estate. Time and weather even affect the story and puzzles. Obviously a spider can’t crawl up the water spout when the rain is washing down. The windmill is so old that the sails don’t spin all the way around unless it’s raining, so to explore the whole thing wait until rain falls in real life. If you’re impatient you can use the weather device, but choose carefully — the weather device and time machine give you control, but only one of them can be used per real world moon phase. Moon phase? Yes indeed, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon tracks that too, and you’ll need to be on your best spider sleuthing game to determine how moon phase impacts the deepest, most hidden puzzles and snatch up that Platinum Trophy! There have been a handful of video games, some of them really great, that use your real world information to create gameplay. We were inspired by those, but we wanted to push it further than we’d seen before. Each of the game’s thirty levels can be played in all four possible conditions, each a new combination of insects, secrets, and features, each with its own leaderboard to track which player has truly mastered Spider’s deep scoring system in that environment. We hope that Spider draws you in, that once you’ve been through Blackbird Estate a first time, you’ll eagerly reach for your PlayStation when you notice those raindrops falling outside your window, to follow up on a clue, go for a high score, or just to see what happens in the Graveyard on a rainy night… View the full article

Thank you! Thank you very much! We’re extremely excited about the success of Rocket League since its launch in PlayStation Plus on July 7th — we couldn’t have done it without you! For those of you who haven’t played Rocket League, it’s still available for free on PlayStation Plus until August 4th so join in on the fun! We thought we’d bring you a complete rundown of what to expect in our upcoming “Supersonic Fury†DLC Pack. As we mentioned in our launch post earlier this month, the Supersonic Fury DLC Pack includes two brand new Battle-Cars: the over-the-top American muscle car Dominus, and the souped-up Japanese street racer Takumi. Both of these vehicles offer six different Decals for Garage customization (12 total) and are only available for play in the DLC. Besides the new Battle-Cars, the DLC Pack also includes two all-new Rocket Boosts (“Nitrous†and “Burnoutâ€), two new Wheel sets (the soccer ball-themed “Cristiano†and the very-cool “Spinner†set), five all-new Paint Types (“Brushed Metal,†“Carbon Fiber,†“Metallic Pearl,†“Pearlescent,†and “Woodâ€), and a handful of new Trophies. This entire collection will be available in early August for $3.99. In addition to the Supersonic Fury DLC, we will also release a free game update that offers an assortment of new content, including our first new map, Utopia Coliseum, and more than 70 new country flags. The long-awaited “Spectator Mode†will be in there too, allowing viewers to watch live games in real-time from any angle in the arena. Spectator controls are very similar to that of our existing “Replay Viewer’s,†so start practicing now and get ready for the drop! Further enhancements, like updated Goal explosions and Demolitions, are planned for the free update as well, along with the brand new song, “Firework,†from the critically-acclaimed electronica group, Hollywood Principle. It is our sincere hope that this mix of paid DLC and free add-on content is what Rocket League fans have been waiting for, and it’s just the beginning of what is plenty more to come. Thanks once again for your continued support and we’ll see you again very, very soon. View the full article

What makes treasure hunting even more appealing? Treasure hunting with friends! Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris leads the lineup of free PS Plus games for August, which includes four games that are playable on PS4. Which games, you ask? Well, you’ve come to the right place… Temple of Osiris follows in the footsteps of Guardian of Light, with fast-paced cooperative play, head-scratching puzzles, and glorious treasure. Traverse the dangerous environments solo, or with friends, and guide Lara on yet another supernatural adventure. Also up for grabs is the critically-acclaimed Limbo. This haunting story has captured the hearts and minds of gamers around the globe — and has chilled a fair number of spines. If you have a fear of spiders, be prepared to cover your eyes. If that sounds a bit too unnerving, jam out and get creative with Sound Shapes — which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. Sound Shapes revolves around musical platforming, fantastic visuals, and a powerful level creator. Rounding out the PS4 offering for this month is Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones, which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. This puzzle platformer tasks you with escaping a dangerous research facility in which death is readily distributed to your hapless clones. Also, joining the August lineup are God of War Ascension (PS3) and CastleStorm (PS3, PS Vita), ensuring that you have plenty of gaming to keep you busy this month. Hello! My name is Joakim Sandberg, also known as Konjak, and I am making Iconoclasts for PS4 and PS Vita. It’s been in development since 2010, and been in planning stages long before that! For the last five years, I’ve worked on the game all by myself, and now Bifrost Entertainment is helping me finish it up. Iconoclasts is an action-platformer with a heavy emphasis on puzzling level design. Not only do you beat up enemies, you beat your head against the puzzles, too. You solve your problems by screwing them up with your giant wrench, or simply blowing your way through with your modified stun-gun. The adventure spans a vast, mysterious world to explore. There are secrets to be found, power-ups to earn, and a host of interesting characters trying to deal with the world in their own ways. You follow the young, naive, and helpful mechanic Robin and her companions as they try to escape the soldiers of the religious authority One Concern — but it’s not just a simple story of good fighting evil to save the world. It’s about people caring for people, but having no real idea how to do it right. As has been the case for my other projects, the game will offer a lot of action and, most importantly, bosses! I’ve always had a great fondness for them, both as a kind of test of what you’ve learned, or a trial-by-fire. They’re the exciting performance exams at the end of a gameplay semester. But the action isn’t my entire ambition! Since I was very young, I’ve wanted to make a game that mixes a bit of Metroid Fusion and Monster World IV; an action-filled adventure with a strong narrative, and also a bunch of world-building and discovery. I always loved the mix of charm and emotion in Final Fantasy IX and wanted a sprinkling of that feeling in the game’s characters, as well. I’ve combined those main influences and used them to express my own genuine, personal thoughts and questions about sharing a world with other people, and dealing with their expectations. I have a deep love for game mechanics, and polishing them down to the most dynamic ideas. No clutter, only the ideas that have the most uses, and combine them to expand your capabilities. I feel that has more potential for satisfying flow, and more player freedom to explore and understand the abilities you might’ve had all along. Couple that with a fast and athletic character, and we’re set! Iconoclasts has taken a lot of time, both from my life, and those who have waited for it since I first revealed it in 2011. If you’re one of those people, and you’re still here, thank you! That’s why I’m still making it, no matter that it’s grown so much bigger and harder to complete than I ever expected. Now it’s time to finish this story. I’ve come to love the game, the story, and its characters, and now I am confident I will achieve what I set out to do with Iconoclasts. Hopefully before we all drive flying cars. View the full article

The fourth and final episode of Conversations with Creators, hosted by Wil Wheaton, is now out and in the wild on PlayStation Store and on YouTube. For some strange reason they asked us to be on it. This action-packed, verbal free-for-all includes long time Santa Monica Studio greats; Creative Director Nate Gary, Lead Combat Designer Jason MacDonald, and Studio Head Shannon Studstill… along with the guy who gets them coffee and asks if he can buy a plane — me. As you all have seen from the previous conversations, we sit in a circular blue room and talk video games for a little more than thirty minutes… which is actually nice (taking time out of the insanity of development to reflect a bit on the past, present and future of what we do). I personally loved hearing the inside story from the devs at Naughty Dog, so hopefully ours is as illuminating. We are discounting many of the top Santa Monica Studio games on PlayStation Store beginning Tuesday afternoon so there has never been a better time to play, including Escape Plan, The Unfinished Swan, Flower, and much more. Also, if you haven’t yet, grab yourself a copy of God of War III Remastered and feast your eyes on the epic finale. Thank you to every single player of Santa Monica Studio games as well as all players of games across the world who are helping to make this incredible art form better and better each day! High Fives, Cory Barlog View the full article

Well, it has all lead to this, this day, this moment, this blog post. Today, my nerves are at an all time high because we release “A Knight to Remember,†the first chapter in our reimagined version of King’s Quest. The team and I have been looking forward to this day for two years, but as gamers we’ve been waiting since the late 90’s. Many of you have been waiting that long too. And now it’s in your hands. A lot has changed in 20 years. The gaming industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar form of entertainment. Throughout those 20 years, adventure games filled with charm, humor, story, and thoughtful puzzles often took a backseat to action gaming. I love and respect many types of games, but I grew up with adventure games. Like many of you, I remember playing King’s Quest with my family. For many it was a mom, or a brother, but for me it was my Uncle. Everyone has a “fun Uncle†and mine loved Sierra. In our new game, the story revolves around a very old King named Graham and the adventures he shares with his curious granddaughter, Gwendolyn. Just as Graham hands down his stories, we set out to create a family friendly game that could be shared between new players and long-time King’s Quest fans. Our goal was to create an experience that blends art, gameplay, and storytelling in a modern adventure game that respects where Sierra came from, and where Sierra is going. We packed in as many puzzles, jokes, nods, and secrets as we could, and we can’t wait to find out if you’ll find them all. There are many people who made this game possible. We’d like to thank everyone who helped us along the way, including Roberta and Ken Williams, Sierra for their full-support and backing, our talented voice cast, and our friends and family who encouraged us every step of the way. We also wanted to thank you for taking the time to read this, and we hope you’ll enjoy the game. The first chapter weaves the tale of Graham becoming a Knight, his first step to becoming the greatest adventurer that ever lived. If you purchase The Complete Collection, you’ll get a discount on all five chapters and a bonus playable epilogue. Chapter five will conclude the story, but the epilogue is being built from the ground up as a fun side story. Always Seek Adventure, Matt Korba Creative Director, King’s Quest View the full article

I’m not sure if a game as sad, sharp, and real-life-serious as the critically-acclaimed Actual Sunlight has ever been released on a major console, but I have no doubt that the PS Vita is exactly where it belongs. With strong and memorable writing, a classic Japanese RPG style, and full-screen CG artwork, I’m hopeful that Actual Sunlight will feel right at home. I love PS Vita, and this was the platform that I wanted to bring it to more than anything. Plus, with a tweaked interface that allows for greater clarity on interactions, as well as larger and much smoother text for an optimal reading experience on the go, this is the best version of Actual Sunlight yet! Here are a few cool facts about the game: Fully set in Toronto, Canada, with environments modeled after real-life places. And references galore! Was originally made in RPG Maker VX ACE, and now reconstructed in Unity 5! Perhaps the first game to be for 18+ players — not because of sex or violence, but because of being about regular, unhappy adult life! If you’re a fan of the dramatic, narrative-driven adventures and visual novels that have become a hallmark of PS Vita, I hope you’ll take a moment to check out this deeply personal and emotionally impactful game about love, depression, and the corporation. I hope you will think it is something special. View the full article
