  2. We recently announced our new Tearaway Unfolded Companion App, which will be releasing alongside the game when it launches next month. Today, we wanted to delve a little deeper into the app and share more about how it works. We’ve even made a shiny new video to show off the app and demonstrate the fun and exciting ways you can interact with the game, all from your couch! The Companion App works using the official PlayStation App, which you can currently download for free with your valid app store account on your preferred app store, for smart phones and tablets. You can also use the PS4 Link “Second-Screen†function on your PS Vita to run the Tearaway Unfolded Companion App. So when the game launches, you can use your portable devices as a second screen for the game! One of the main ways you can interact with the papery world using the app is through the trusty cutting mat. If you pick the scissors icon to the far left, you are taken to the app’s cutting mat where you can let your creative juices flow and draw whatever your heart desires! Draw a heart, a flower or whatever you fancy, hit the little stamp icon and your creation will be posted into the game where you’ll see your creation floating through the skies! You can also use your device’s camera (if it has one) to take photos of the real world, which can then be imported into the cutting mat to be cut and pasted however you want. Simply hit the camera icon to launch your camera, and then start snapping away. Your photos can also be used to texturize the game world and transform whatever sheet of paper your Messenger is currently standing on! It’s also important when journeying through the world of Tearaway to leave your own papery mark, and what better way than by personalizing your Messenger! When you enter the Messenger customization screen, you can either use the app’s cutting mat to create new decorations and costumes, or you use your device’s camera to take photos that can be customized on the cutting mat to create your own unique Messenger! Fancy giving iota a beard? Or changing atoi’s eyes? It’s all possible with the app. A really cool thing about the app: it’s context sensitive, meaning that players controlling the app can directly affect what the player is currently playing through in the game itself. You could be customizing your Messenger on the TV while your friend uses the app to cut out a beard which will then appear on your Messenger in the game! If your friend takes a photo on the app, this will also appear in the game for you to cut up and edit on the big screen. And as you’re running through the game world discovering new lands and battling Scraps, anything made on the app (shapes, decorations, and photos) can be sent into the game, which will float through the air or pop up on the ground beneath your feet. It adds another layer to the fun. You can also use the app to access tearaway.me, your personal profile page for Tearaway online. You can see all your progress in the game, including any photos you’ve taken and which papercraft models you’ve collected. You can also use tearaway.me to see what the community has been up to, viewing other players’ photos and seeing how creative they’ve gotten with customization. We also regularly pick our favorites on there too for our “Community Picks†section, so you can check out what we’re loving that week. We hope you folks have fun interacting with the papery world and creating marvelous things! We can’t wait to see what you all make! Tearaway Unfolded comes out on September 8th in the US, 9th in Europe, and 11th in the UK. Pre-order today and receive the Crafted Edition loaded with lots of papery goodness! View the full article
  3. About a month away from the release of Until Dawn on PS4, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jason Graves, the man responsible for scoring Supermassive Games’ branching interactive horror. Jason is an award-winning composer boasting an impressive CV, including work on The Order: 1886, Evolve, Tomb Raider and the Dead Space series. In short, when it comes to building atmosphere and tension, he has very few peers in the games business. With his work on Until Dawn wrapping up, he was kind enough to let us in on a few of his trade secrets and discuss how he’s been helping the game’s developers ratchet up the fear factor… How did you first get involved with Until Dawn? Jason Graves: I’ve been involved with it since 2011. From the very beginning, we all agreed on a shared vision for the music; an emotional checklist that we were looking for. We really wanted to place you physically in this mountain, and in this cabin. Until Dawn | PlayStation.com You’re surrounded by a group of friends so there are musical opportunities to have great character themes and some fun pieces, but also you need to be able to score the more ‘horrifying’ situations that make up most of the game. What is your creative process? Do you go into a project like this with a clear idea of what you want to produce? Jason Graves: The first thing I like to do is to have a long conversation with the game’s audio director – and that’s exactly what happened with Barney Pratt. I think we must have talked for three hours. It was a really good sign because, not only did we get along personally, but our creative views and perspective of what Until Dawn could do that other games maybe hadn’t in the past were right in line. It was very easy once I got off the phone with Barney to move forward with the main theme, which is what I like to do first. The idea is that the main theme, even if it is never really used in the game in one particular place, really encapsulates everything about the game that we’re trying to achieve. You’ve talked before about making ‘reactive’ music for Dead Space, where some instruments get louder with your proximity to threat. Did you use similar techniques in Until Dawn? Jason Graves: That’s more of an implementation idea; how the music is put in the game and how it plays back. Nowadays there’s third party software that does similar things with the music, which is wonderful because it means you don’t have to have an elaborate proprietary music system – it’s available to a lot of folks now and that’s a fairly common technique. We do use that quite a bit, especially during suspenseful scenes; maybe if there’s a door that you’re going to either go in or not, then you can have the music get louder or softer depending on how close you get to it. Your score for The Order 1886 put a big emphasis on choir, cello and viola. Are there any instruments you’ve brought to the fore in Until Dawn? How would you characterise the game’s ‘sound’? Jason Graves: That’s a great question. We have no violas in Until Dawn and we didn’t purposely do the opposite of what we did for The Order, but I wanted that space of the strings to have other things instead. Since it is a very cinematic score, a lot of the themes play in that space where the violas would have been. There’s this one little shaker that I have. It’s a goat-hoof shaker. It was actually featured a lot throughout the score to represent the mountains, the location, and the history of the people that used to live there. You can distinctively hear that throughout the main theme and some of the key tracks. I also wrote a two minute theme that has a couple different melodies in it, and is very tonally ambiguous – you can’t really tell if it’s major or if it’s minor. There are certain kinds of chords in there; is it happy, is it sad? I can’t really tell. And that was the point, because you have eight different characters in the game, you can play as all of them, and there’s a killer on the loose. What’s happening? Who’s the villain? Nobody really knows. There’s definitely an intentional ambiguity in the music. Until Dawn launches in North America on August 25th! In the meantime, have a listen to three of the game’s tracks below. 4. Imagine you’re riding the bus and playing a great game on your PS Vita. The bus drives into a rain cloud, and… can that be? Now it’s raining inside the game! Later at home, thanks to the one-two punch of Cross Buy and Cloud Save, you pick up where you left off on your PS4. And when the sun sets outside your window, it becomes night in the level you were just playing! That’s what happens in our upcoming game, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon, thanks to the positional features of PS Vita and PS4. In Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon, out soon for PS4 and PS Vita, you play a jumping spider. You can walk on walls and ceilings, jump, and use your silk to create threads. Draw any shape with those threads and it’ll form a web, which is how you catch the variety of insects found at each location. As you make your way from room to room, you’ll slowly realize that you’re exploring an abandoned estate, one riddled with mysteries, clues, and puzzles. Like any good spider, you leave the place covered in cobwebs. Time and weather matter when on the hunt for bugs. At night, the fireflies and crickets emerge while moths circle around lights. When it rains, mosquitoes come out and inchworms dangle by threads. On a clear day, you might smack a hornet nest to do battle with its defenders, or carefully craft a strong web, required to trap the largest insects. And what dictates whether it’s day or night, rain or shine? The real world. Once you give your permission, the game determines where you are, looks up the time of day and current weather, and mirrors those in the game. So when the sun rises or the rain falls outside your window, the same thing happens inside your game at the mysterious Blackbird Estate. Time and weather even affect the story and puzzles. Obviously a spider can’t crawl up the water spout when the rain is washing down. The windmill is so old that the sails don’t spin all the way around unless it’s raining, so to explore the whole thing wait until rain falls in real life. If you’re impatient you can use the weather device, but choose carefully — the weather device and time machine give you control, but only one of them can be used per real world moon phase. Moon phase? Yes indeed, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon tracks that too, and you’ll need to be on your best spider sleuthing game to determine how moon phase impacts the deepest, most hidden puzzles and snatch up that Platinum Trophy! There have been a handful of video games, some of them really great, that use your real world information to create gameplay. We were inspired by those, but we wanted to push it further than we’d seen before. Each of the game’s thirty levels can be played in all four possible conditions, each a new combination of insects, secrets, and features, each with its own leaderboard to track which player has truly mastered Spider’s deep scoring system in that environment. We hope that Spider draws you in, that once you’ve been through Blackbird Estate a first time, you’ll eagerly reach for your PlayStation when you notice those raindrops falling outside your window, to follow up on a clue, go for a high score, or just to see what happens in the Graveyard on a rainy night… View the full article

  6. Mere weeks — all that’s left before finding out how the world ended on June 6th, 1984. We definitely share The Chinese Room’s excitement and anticipation in revealing what exactly befell quiet Yaughton Valley. 10. Thank you! Thank you very much! We’re extremely excited about the success of Rocket League since its launch in PlayStation Plus on July 7th — we couldn’t have done it without you! For those of you who haven’t played Rocket League, it’s still available for free on PlayStation Plus until August 4th so join in on the fun! We thought we’d bring you a complete rundown of what to expect in our upcoming “Supersonic Fury†DLC Pack. As we mentioned in our launch post earlier this month, the Supersonic Fury DLC Pack includes two brand new Battle-Cars: the over-the-top American muscle car Dominus, and the souped-up Japanese street racer Takumi. Both of these vehicles offer six different Decals for Garage customization (12 total) and are only available for play in the DLC. Besides the new Battle-Cars, the DLC Pack also includes two all-new Rocket Boosts (“Nitrous†and “Burnoutâ€), two new Wheel sets (the soccer ball-themed “Cristiano†and the very-cool “Spinner†set), five all-new Paint Types (“Brushed Metal,†“Carbon Fiber,†“Metallic Pearl,†“Pearlescent,†and “Woodâ€), and a handful of new Trophies. This entire collection will be available in early August for $3.99. In addition to the Supersonic Fury DLC, we will also release a free game update that offers an assortment of new content, including our first new map, Utopia Coliseum, and more than 70 new country flags. The long-awaited “Spectator Mode†will be in there too, allowing viewers to watch live games in real-time from any angle in the arena. Spectator controls are very similar to that of our existing “Replay Viewer’s,†so start practicing now and get ready for the drop! Thanks once again for your continued support and we’ll see you again very, very soon. View the full article
  11. What makes treasure hunting even more appealing? Treasure hunting with friends! Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris leads the lineup of free PS Plus games for August, which includes four games that are playable on PS4. Which games, you ask? Well, you’ve come to the right place… Temple of Osiris follows in the footsteps of Guardian of Light, with fast-paced cooperative play, head-scratching puzzles, and glorious treasure. Traverse the dangerous environments solo, or with friends, and guide Lara on yet another supernatural adventure. Also up for grabs is the critically-acclaimed Limbo. This haunting story has captured the hearts and minds of gamers around the globe — and has chilled a fair number of spines. If you have a fear of spiders, be prepared to cover your eyes. If that sounds a bit too unnerving, jam out and get creative with Sound Shapes — which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. Sound Shapes revolves around musical platforming, fantastic visuals, and a powerful level creator. Rounding out the PS4 offering for this month is Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones, which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. This puzzle platformer tasks you with escaping a dangerous research facility in which death is readily distributed to your hapless clones. 12. Hello! My name is Joakim Sandberg, also known as Konjak, and I am making Iconoclasts for PS4 and PS Vita. It’s been in development since 2010, and been in planning stages long before that! For the last five years, I’ve worked on the game all by myself, and now Bifrost Entertainment is helping me finish it up. Iconoclasts is an action-platformer with a heavy emphasis on puzzling level design. Not only do you beat up enemies, you beat your head against the puzzles, too. You solve your problems by screwing them up with your giant wrench, or simply blowing your way through with your modified stun-gun. The adventure spans a vast, mysterious world to explore. There are secrets to be found, power-ups to earn, and a host of interesting characters trying to deal with the world in their own ways. You follow the young, naive, and helpful mechanic Robin and her companions as they try to escape the soldiers of the religious authority One Concern — but it’s not just a simple story of good fighting evil to save the world. It’s about people caring for people, but having no real idea how to do it right. As has been the case for my other projects, the game will offer a lot of action and, most importantly, bosses! I’ve always had a great fondness for them, both as a kind of test of what you’ve learned, or a trial-by-fire. They’re the exciting performance exams at the end of a gameplay semester. But the action isn’t my entire ambition! Since I was very young, I’ve wanted to make a game that mixes a bit of Metroid Fusion and Monster World IV; an action-filled adventure with a strong narrative, and also a bunch of world-building and discovery. I always loved the mix of charm and emotion in Final Fantasy IX and wanted a sprinkling of that feeling in the game’s characters, as well. I’ve combined those main influences and used them to express my own genuine, personal thoughts and questions about sharing a world with other people, and dealing with their expectations. I have a deep love for game mechanics, and polishing them down to the most dynamic ideas. No clutter, only the ideas that have the most uses, and combine them to expand your capabilities. I feel that has more potential for satisfying flow, and more player freedom to explore and understand the abilities you might’ve had all along. Couple that with a fast and athletic character, and we’re set! Iconoclasts has taken a lot of time, both from my life, and those who have waited for it since I first revealed it in 2011. If you’re one of those people, and you’re still here, thank you! That’s why I’m still making it, no matter that it’s grown so much bigger and harder to complete than I ever expected. Now it’s time to finish this story. I’ve come to love the game, the story, and its characters, and now I am confident I will achieve what I set out to do with Iconoclasts. Hopefully before we all drive flying cars. View the full article
  13. The fourth and final episode of Conversations with Creators, hosted by Wil Wheaton, is now out and in the wild on PlayStation Store and on YouTube. For some strange reason they asked us to be on it. This action-packed, verbal free-for-all includes long time Santa Monica Studio greats; Creative Director Nate Gary, Lead Combat Designer Jason MacDonald, and Studio Head Shannon Studstill… along with the guy who gets them coffee and asks if he can buy a plane — me. As you all have seen from the previous conversations, we sit in a circular blue room and talk video games for a little more than thirty minutes… which is actually nice (taking time out of the insanity of development to reflect a bit on the past, present and future of what we do). I personally loved hearing the inside story from the devs at Naughty Dog, so hopefully ours is as illuminating. We are discounting many of the top Santa Monica Studio games on PlayStation Store beginning Tuesday afternoon so there has never been a better time to play, including Escape Plan, The Unfinished Swan, Flower, and much more. Also, if you haven’t yet, grab yourself a copy of God of War III Remastered and feast your eyes on the epic finale. Thank you to every single player of Santa Monica Studio games as well as all players of games across the world who are helping to make this incredible art form better and better each day! 16. Well, it has all lead to this, this day, this moment, this blog post. Today, my nerves are at an all time high because we release “A Knight to Remember,†the first chapter in our reimagined version of King’s Quest. The team and I have been looking forward to this day for two years, but as gamers we’ve been waiting since the late 90’s. Many of you have been waiting that long too. And now it’s in your hands. A lot has changed in 20 years. The gaming industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar form of entertainment. Throughout those 20 years, adventure games filled with charm, humor, story, and thoughtful puzzles often took a backseat to action gaming. I love and respect many types of games, but I grew up with adventure games. Like many of you, I remember playing King’s Quest with my family. For many it was a mom, or a brother, but for me it was my Uncle. Everyone has a “fun Uncle†and mine loved Sierra. In our new game, the story revolves around a very old King named Graham and the adventures he shares with his curious granddaughter, Gwendolyn. Just as Graham hands down his stories, we set out to create a family friendly game that could be shared between new players and long-time King’s Quest fans. Our goal was to create an experience that blends art, gameplay, and storytelling in a modern adventure game that respects where Sierra came from, and where Sierra is going. We packed in as many puzzles, jokes, nods, and secrets as we could, and we can’t wait to find out if you’ll find them all. There are many people who made this game possible. We’d like to thank everyone who helped us along the way, including Roberta and Ken Williams, Sierra for their full-support and backing, our talented voice cast, and our friends and family who encouraged us every step of the way. We also wanted to thank you for taking the time to read this, and we hope you’ll enjoy the game. The first chapter weaves the tale of Graham becoming a Knight, his first step to becoming the greatest adventurer that ever lived. If you purchase The Complete Collection, you’ll get a discount on all five chapters and a bonus playable epilogue. Chapter five will conclude the story, but the epilogue is being built from the ground up as a fun side story. Always Seek Adventure, Matt Korba Creative Director, King’s Quest View the full article
  17. I’m not sure if a game as sad, sharp, and real-life-serious as the critically-acclaimed Actual Sunlight has ever been released on a major console, but I have no doubt that the PS Vita is exactly where it belongs. With strong and memorable writing, a classic Japanese RPG style, and full-screen CG artwork, I’m hopeful that Actual Sunlight will feel right at home. I love PS Vita, and this was the platform that I wanted to bring it to more than anything. Plus, with a tweaked interface that allows for greater clarity on interactions, as well as larger and much smoother text for an optimal reading experience on the go, this is the best version of Actual Sunlight yet! Here are a few cool facts about the game: Fully set in Toronto, Canada, with environments modeled after real-life places. And references galore! Was originally made in RPG Maker VX ACE, and now reconstructed in Unity 5! Perhaps the first game to be for 18+ players — not because of sex or violence, but because of being about regular, unhappy adult life! If you’re a fan of the dramatic, narrative-driven adventures and visual novels that have become a hallmark of PS Vita, I hope you’ll take a moment to check out this deeply personal and emotionally impactful game about love, depression, and the corporation. I hope you will think it is something special. View the full article
  18. It’s here, N++ is finally here! Wondering what the 14th letter of the alphabet (plus plus) could be? Check out our launch trailer: N++ | PlayStation.com N++ is an action-puzzle platformer that’s smooth as butter, if butter ran at 60fps at 1080p. You play as a gold-thirsty ninja, trying to survive in a world designed to make that difficult. We paid a lot of attention to how this game feels: the controls are responsive, tight and precise, letting you move through the levels acrobatically, and deftly evade the deadly enemy robots that populate the strange futuristic world. We have lovingly crammed N++ full of thousands of thoughtfully designed levels (2360 spanning Solo, Co-op and Competitive MP (Race)), a 63-track soundtrack of some of the best electronic music the world has to offer, over 50 colour schemes, tons of fun-lockables™ and plenty of decidedly devious hidden challenges to allow a lifetime of play. As mentioned in the trailer, we’re never making a sequel, so we made this one to last No other game is quite like N++. Even if you’ve played a game in the series before, you owe it to yourself to see how it’s evolved. We added new enemies that are terrifying and thrilling, new mechanics and puzzles, reworked the Race rules so it’s great for parties but also deep enough for serious competition, and have carefully tweaked the entire game so it looks and feels like perfection. We’re confident you won’t be disappointed. People have been asking about trophies – there are plenty, and we tried to have fun with them too! We’ve created some interesting special challenges that add another layer to the game, and included a few humourous ones to take the edge off. Plus (plus), we’re excited to announce that there’s also a Platinum trophy! YES! But that’s not all! There’s also a level editor and global level-sharing, plus highscores with replays for every level in the game (including the ones you make!). We love highscore competitions with friends, so we made sure to support it in N++. If that’s STILL not enough, we’ll also be adding more to the game with future DLC. (Note: whenever you buy the game, you’re also buying a “lifetime pass†to all future DLC. We are planning a substantial update that will increase the cost of the game / lifetime pass, so buy early if you’re looking to get N++ on the cheap! It won’t be going on sale much either, because, due to the level-sharing we have a relatively high cost per user, ruling out steep discounts). When it’s all said and done, this game is going to be massive – this is the last, and the best, version of the game that will ever be, so we’re determined to close out the series with a bang! Ok, ok we’ll stop gushing now. Suffice it to say, N++ is magnificent, and we could not be happier with it. We’re so excited for you all to finally see what we’re talking about. What are you waiting for? Grab it now! 19. You are not prepared. These words will greet you when you load up Velocibox on your PS4 and PS Vita. You think you have the twitch reflexes to keep up with this madness? Velocibox is the crown jewel of endless runners. The gameplay is straightforward, but within seconds you’ll realize you’ve met your match. Go ahead: try to memorize the patterns, position yourself properly, and time your movements to get through each level. Do your best to maneuver through the dynamic obstacles that stand between you and victory. Flip, dodge, and twist to collect cubes in order to advance further into the don’t-blink-or-you-die insanity of Velocibox. This diabolical creation from Shawn Beck Games and LOOT Interactive will cause you to uncontrollably scream, yell, and swear at the top of your lungs. Cringe-worthy sounds that make you think twice about whether or not Velocibox is safe for your sanity, your blood pressure, and your nervous system. Velocibox has that “Just one more round!†level of addiction. You’ll be attacking this game for days. Weeks. Months. Because unless you have the reflexes of a Formula One driver, you will experience your fair share of defeat. But just when you think you can’t stand to hear, “Level One: Begin…Game Over†round after round after round, and you contemplate giving up, something glorious happens: you finish level one. The overwhelming endorphin rush that takes place the first time you conquer level one is almost too good for words. It is glorious. Savor this feeling. Remember it well. It will last exactly 2.3 seconds — because now you come face-to-face with the monster of never-ending pain that is level two. If self-punishment is what you’re into (no judging here), than we dare you to try your hand at what might be one of the most difficult Gold Trophies in the history of PlayStation: in Ranked mode, successfully make it through levels one through nine… in a single run. ╯°□°)╯︵ â”»â”â”» To give some idea of just how ridiculously hard that Trophy is: in all the months of developing and testing this game, we’ve only see one person even come close to making it through. And should we even talk about how to unlock Super Velocibox…? Yup, just when you thought you had it all figured out, there’s an even more glorious, insane, hair-on-fire challenge ready to make your acquaintance: Super Velocibox. Test your skills, your reflexes, and your ability to persevere in the face of an unyielding challenge. Be one with the Box! Velocibox. Coming to your PS4 and PS Vita on July 28th, complete with a killer dynamic PS4 theme. Play the game, then let us know how far you got in the comments below. View the full article
  20. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have always longed to burgle some Victorian idiot’s house, but due to the cruel ravages of linear timelines, you’ve been forever denied the opportunity of that joyful, joyful experience. The sheer misfortune of being born in the wrong century means we’ll never get to see a marvellously-mustachioed gentleman slowly removing his top hat as he realizes some scamp’s nicked all his cash, and that simply isn’t fair. Fortunately, thanks to Computer Technology, we’re in a position to digitally recreate the halcyon days of busting open some primitive chump’s front door, smashing all their robotic guards about the place, and chuckling into the night with all their hard-earned cash. Which is precisely why I have created The Swindle for your PlayStation. The Swindle is a 2D RPGish, roguelike-like platformer about pulling off various burglaries in a stylized steampunk/cyberpunk London. How many of those have you played this year? None, hopefully. Each building is procedurally generated: everything from the layout, what’s in it, what security measures it has, the address — it’s all generated on the fly, meaning no two heists are ever the same. From your airship up in outer space you’ll be commanding a group of randomly-generated thieves on a string of increasingly-daring heists, in an effort to steal enough money to upgrade your thieves with the kind of cool gadgets necessary to pull off bigger and better heists. Get spotted, and the game turns on a dime. It’s no longer a sneaky-sneaky stealthy experience, it suddenly becomes an all-out action race against the clock as you desperately set about trying to hack as many computers as you can before The Police inevitably show up and ruin everyone’s fun. If that all sounds like your kind of thing: congratulations, you’re a sociopath. But it’s fine, you can live out your Victorian bot-smashing fantasies from the comfort of your living room. The Swindle is out today on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. It is cross buy, and I really, really hope you enjoy it. View the full article
  21. I’m Benjamin Crocker, from Hapa Games, and I am proud to announce that Ascendant will be released on PS4 August 25th! Ascendant is a side-scrolling roguelike beat ‘em up where you’ll take on the role of a demigod in a war against your rivals. As you make your way through this brutal realm, you’ll find an assortment of weapons, armor, spells, and Blessings that will help you battle to supremacy and your divine throne. We loved making Ascendant, we have a blast playing it, and you should try it out. One of the main features in the game is the Blessings system. Blessings are boons granted to the demigods that dramatically change and improve their abilities as they battle through each realm. They can be slotted into either your weapon, armor, or spell and provide a distinct power-up depending on which Blessing has been placed there. A good example is from an early-game Blessing you can find called The Blessing of Agni. Agni, as the Hindu god of fire, is a fire-based Blessing. If you slot it into your weapon, you will have a chance to apply a fire damage-over-time effect to your enemy with each melee strike. If you slot it into your spell, your spells will now explode on impact. Slotted into armor, Agni will explode every time you take damage. There are over twenty Blessings just like this one to find, unlock, and improve the demigods. Some examples include a double jump, poison spells, a berserker rage, and a giant shark that eats wounded enemies. Here is a little insight into the game’s development. Ascendant started as a kernel of an idea while we were graduate students at FIEA. We were finishing up our large-scale capstone projects and were trying to figure out what to do next. At the time, there was a huge influx of incredible (and sometimes less incredible) roguelikes from the indie scene and we played all of them. Many of us grew up playing old-school brawlers, so blending these two genres into our own vision was natural. We would brainstorm game mechanics over pints in downtown Orlando, and imagine potential art styles in the the school’s hallways between classes. Our last semester gave us the chance to turn all of our ideas and concepts into a real game. We started up Hapa Games, and then it was a non-stop sprint. We went from starting production in August 2013 to graduating in December with a strong prototype, a small following, a successful Kickstarter campaign, and a burgeoning Steam Greenlight page. After graduation we moved into the Garage. This is where the magic (and a lot of hard work) happened. Some of the original team split off to pursue their own path, but seven of us remained to finish the project. We set up a studio in that hot, muggy Garage, with Ascendant as our flagship. We had secondhand whiteboards, a dirty grey carpet, $40 desks from IKEA, monitors bought from a garage sale, a clattering AC unit, and a dart board. It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t swanky. But it was perfect; our own private indie mecca. We couldn’t have had a better place to create Ascendant. Obviously, there were challenges. With the freedom to do anything we optimistically gave ourselves a very short amount of time to release. We added some exciting features while others had to be cut or drastically reduced in scope. There was a sense of personal responsibility for every dev; if I don’t complete this thing, no one else will. Days and weeks started to blend together. Our abhorrent sleep schedules became a running joke. There were disagreements, but emotions were as high as our hopes and our motivation was steadfast. Triumph and hardship were doled out together, driven by adrenaline to get this thing done. However, as rapidly as we iterated and as demanding as our work became, the core of Ascendant – brawler roguelike dungeon crawler – never left focus. And then suddenly, the game was out. It was glorious. Now we’re a month away from releasing on PS4. It’s been a weird, incredible journey so far. This is Ascendant. We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we did making it. 23. Hey kid! You wanna hear a secret? Because, friends, we’ve been saving a juicy one for a long time now… Anime enthusiasts inevitably ask when they see the game, “So… can you turn into a mech?†And we always respond with, “Oh man! That would be cool!†Well, guess what? You can freaking turn into a mech in Galak-Z! What is this “Mech†blasphemy you keep ranting about?! The Mech mode is a whole new way to play Galak-Z. Get up in an enemy’s face, slice him in two with your sword, or grab him with your extending arm, smash his guts, then throw his scrapped remains into an oncoming bad guy for a double-explosion fireworks show. You needn’t worry too much about taking damage either, as your huge Directional Shield will deflect and absorb even the most deadly attacks when timed right. Plus, the deadly environment is now your best friend, as you take and fling what you need from it — asteroids, spikes, explosives — relentlessly at any enemy stupid enough to appear in your sights. So what? How is this different than Ship gameplay, Mechman?! Rather than fighting from afar whilst dodging like a pro, the Mech is all about turning the tables and pressuring the bad guys instead. One on one, especially versus smaller zippy enemies, the Mech is vicious. It can grab an enemy even from a distance, pull them close and beat them to death without resistance or mercy. Against many enemies, what it lacks in missiles it makes up in the ability to throw the explosive elements of the environment, or can dispatch multiple enemies at once with charged sword attacks that sweep in a great arc. Defensively, the Direction Shield gives extra damage absorption on top of regular shields, and like with the Juke, more skillful players will be able to use their timing to negate attacks altogether by deflecting them. Best of all, the Mech requires no upgrades to use all of the skills listed above, making it your weapon of choice at the start of a Season when your Ship is still thin on awesome upgrades. Of course, switching between the two when desired is the most effective. But…you probably limit how much I can switch between the Ship and the Mech, right? Actually, the player can transform from Mech to Ship, and back again, with the touch of a button! Unlimited transforming means you can unleash a barrage of missiles to obliterate shields then speed in sword raised for the kill, or perhaps just pluck an unwary foe from the circus of smoke and explosions and beat him to a pulp. If things get too much, use your Directional Shield to take the brunt of damage and then transform to Ship form and fire as you reverse-boost away to safety and victory at once. The possibilities are endless! The full might of the Galak-Z is yours to discover, as both Mech and Ship form, on August 4th. Raj Joshi & Tom Hart, Designer View the full article

  25. One of my favorite television shows is How It’s Made. There’s something hypnotically satisfying about watching an assembly line repeat the same precise actions over and over again, assembling seemingly random components into a recognizable, finished product. In fact, I’m such a fan of assembly lines that we made a puzzle game about building factories called Infinifactory, and it’s coming soon to PS4! One of the most important things to know about Infinifactory is that it’s not just a puzzle game — it’s an open-ended puzzle game. Unlike a typical puzzle game, where each puzzle has a single solution that you’re trying to uncover, every puzzle in Infinifactory has countless solutions, each with different strengths and weaknesses. This allows you to compete against your friends and the world to build the fastest, smallest, and simplest factories possible. You’re not just “solving†a puzzle, you’re inventing your own solution! When we first released Infinifactory in early 2015, it was as an “early access†game on PC. Over the following six months we refined it heavily based on player feedback, and even added four additional sets of levels, effectively doubling the number of puzzles in the game. It’s gotten the time and attention to turn it into the greatest puzzle game we’ve ever made, and now it’s coming straight to you on PS4! View the full article
