  4. Hey, I’m Erlend Grefsrud, and I’m making Myriad on PS4 and PS Vita. It’s my first solo game, published by my company Bifrost Entertainment, and I’m responsible for everything except the music, courtesy of his reverberant majesty Mathias Rudsengen. Myriad is a beatmatched crystallization of arcade aesthetics. It’s a game that grows more and more beautiful the better you play, where you make and break worlds, control time, and bend space — all for one thing: performance. Myriad is purely about performance. It’s stark naked, with no story, no obvious meaning at all, just actions and consequences, crisp shapes and you. Everything springs out of your performance. The game is pretty simple: defeat enemies to build the level you play in. But beware: defeating enemies only multiplies their numbers. Your goal is to blow up the level you built in a glorious chain reaction to clear it of enemies, upgrade your weapons — and do it again. Bigger and better. As you progress, you make and break bigger and bigger worlds along with ever greater swarms of enemies. All the while, the soundtrack builds around your performance, punctuating events and swelling towards the next explosive crescendo. You compete to deliver the highest-scoring performance. The current best is showcased right on the title screen where everyone can see it, thanks to Myriad’s replay system. Every performance is recorded and can be rewinded, meaning Myriad lets you control time. You don’t restart when you die — you just rewind. No game over screen, no breaking the flow, just undo your mistake and keep performing. Your highest-scoring performances are saved too, so you can share them and enjoy your friends’ best performances — and even participate in them. Any time you watch a replay, you can just resume playing. Myriad puts you in control and lets you carry on the performance. Myriad is about giving you as much control as possible. You can control space as well as time: every circle can be picked up and moved, whether it’s an enemy or part of the level. This is Myriad’s purpose: to open possibilities, yield control, get out of the way and let you play — I want your performance to be Myriad’s meaning. I made it as beautiful as I could. Now it’s your turn to make it more so. View the full article

  7. Set between Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls on PS Vita introduces a number of new faces while bringing back a few familiar ones. With the horrors from The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History that surrounded Hope’s Peak Academy still overshadowing mankind, the war of despair rages on. Upon discovering Komaru, one of the playable heroines of Danganronpa Another Episode, Byakuya of Future Foundation returns from the first Danganronpa game to save her from the attacking Monokumas. Soon after equipping her with a Hacking Gun to destroy the Monokumas, she is caught by the Warriors of Hope, a band of children who rule over Towa City. At first, the children seem innocent, mirroring the Ultimate students that Hope’s Peak Academy strives for to become the ray of hope for society. Each of them specializing in their specific strength, the Warriors of Hope identify themselves with various Dragon Quest job classes. Masaru Daimon starts off, the Li’l Ultimate P.E. and the hero of the Warriors of Hope, who claims to be the leader and is followed by Nagisa Shingetsu, the Li’l Ultimate Social Studies and the sage of the Warriors of Hope. Next introduced is Jataro Kemuri, Li’l Ultimate Art as the priest, and Kotoko Utsugi, the fighter of the Warriors of Hope and Li’l Ultimate Drama. And last but not least, the true leader of the Warriors of Hope and Li’l Ultimate Homeroom, Monaca, who acts as the mage in their band of personas. The Warriors of Hope are carrying out a revolution against adults in Towa City — they blame the adults for the tragedy and want to eliminate adults to build a utopia for children and become a beacon of hope for all kids. After defending the adults and upsetting Monaca, Komaru is deemed to be one of the “Demons,†which spurs a game called Demon Hunting — a super fun game where the Warriors of Hope fight to see who takes down the demon first. Guided by Kurokuma, the stylish, Monokuma-like advisor to the Warriors of Hope, the hunt begins. Soon after, Komaru is joined by Toko, a.k.a. Genocide Jack, the other playable heroine, and introduced to Shirokuma and the Resistance who will help you traverse through Towa City to survive. Of course, this heavy story can’t be complete without the humor that only Danganronpa can provide; Komaru’s ordinary girl responses in contrast to Toko’s eccentric thoughts and fantasies give way to lighthearted banter despite running for their lives. And so, the rest is up to you — how will you escape? Will you survive the attacks by the Warriors of Hope and escape the hordes of Monokumas? Will you find hope or will you fall into the ultimate despair that lies beyond it? See for yourself when Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls launches on September 1st in North America! And be sure to check out the previous Danganronpa games, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair to stave off your thirst for more despair! View the full article
  8. Hey y’all! I’m proud to introduce Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!, a massive sequel to the surprise hit on PC. It will be making its console debut on PS4! Woo! Way back in the PSone days, I’d always pick up a copy of the official PlayStation magazine for the included demo discs. Every now and then they’d have a special “import section†that had untranslated demos of games from Japan that would likely never make their way to the states. One of these was a game called Ore no Ryouri, a twin stick cooking game that had you pouring beers and making foods for customers. It was just a small, timed demo, but it had me hooked. Well after playing it, the idea of making an insane cooking game kept gnawing away at me. I got into making small games and pursued my passion for game development, but it wasn’t until making Cook, Serve, Delicious! that it all clicked together. Finally, my love of food and intense gameplay mechanics were merged into one. Still, I didn’t know if that would play to the gaming audience, given that a large majority of cooking games were of the simple, casual variety, and Cook, Serve, Delicious! was very much the opposite of that. In fact it didn’t really take off until Ryan Davis of Giantbomb picked it up for a Quick Look video. Since then, the game has inspired hundreds of Let’s Play videos and streams for a cumulative total of more than six million views, and has grossed nearly a million across PC and mobile. Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! has you rebuilding your own restaurant in a massive skyscraper, earning money by cooking and serving customers delicious food, and building up your restaurant’s reputation from a zero star dilapidated café to a five star world famous restaurant. Along the way you’ll jump into other restaurants in the tower for shift work, star in the biggest reality cooking show ever, participate in tournaments all over the world, uncover mysterious ingredients, and tons, tons more. The breakneck pace and gameplay has been a staple of the game, and this game will be even faster and more challenging than ever. This is a huge, massive sequel to the first game. Everything is new in this game, from the art by Camille Kuo, to the music by Jonathan Geer, to the large amount of game content, with more than 180 foods, 1,000+ recipes, tons of unlockables and events, and dozens of hours of gameplay. For those who have played the first game, you can look forward to even better gameplay mechanics with all new strategies and components, running at 1080p and 60 frames per second. I can’t wait to launch the game in 2016! Thanks, and if you have any questions I’ll be sure to answer them below. Until then, keep cooking deliciously! View the full article
  9. The end of the world is nearly upon us. Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture now has a release date of August 11th and the team is working exceptionally hard on the final few touches to ensure that the game is as perfect as it can be. As you read this I’m in L.A. with our brilliant sound designer Adam Hay and the wonderful Sony sound and music team doing the final mix of the game. I can’t believe that this time has finally come- it’s scary and exciting in equal measures because it means that there are no more changes: no more “can we just tryâ€, no “how about if weâ€, no “I think we should†– just the knowledge that for better or worse, this is how the game will sound on release. *sobs into gin-soaked pillow* As well as being The Chinese Room composer I’m also joint studio head, and working on this game has been a blast. Of course there have also been times when I would have chewed my own arm off to leave the development, but that’s how it goes on long projects! I know this game so well – I know every rock, every VO, every blade of grass. This level of immersion in the game world has enabled me to write a score that is a love letter to the game and the characters within it. Every main character has their own distinct musical theme (think Peter and the Wolf but for the apocalypse) and the music helps to gently guide you round the world as well as providing the emotional core of the experience. All we want as artists I think is to keep getting better; we strive for the thing that is always out of reach. The music for Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was a real challenge – being set in the ’80s there was perhaps an expectation that I’d write a synth-driven retrotastic score. I tried that and when we put it in the game it simply didn’t work. The world that the team has created is so timeless and it just felt wrong to impose a heavy-handed pastiche onto the environment. So I decided to create what I hope is timeless music; music for an England that only ever existed in the imagination. Being afforded the opportunity to write beautiful music for this incomparably beautiful game has been a true honour. To record at the world-famous AIR Studios was a career defining moment for me. As I stood watching and listening to the assembled group of phenomenally talented musicians and singers I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I was lucky enough to have this very special time documented by Sony and you can watch the video on this page to get a taste of the music of Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and an insight into how it was created. The end result is — I hope — rural, dream-like, lyrical, passionate, poetic and most of all an encapsulation of that this game is all about: a celebration of what it is to be human. We wanted to give attendees of E3 a treat and show them if Sully and Drake ever caught up to Nathan’s brother, Sam, in time. The reaction was pretty fantastic. Now, for everyone not able to see it at the show, or on Twitch, you can watch it right here. Get ready for a wild ride as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be careening into your living room in 2016. 11. Hi all! I’m really excited to give you a little insight into our experience bringing Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved to PS Vita. We’re big fans of the Vita here at Lucid, and we were always very keen to bring the Geometry Wars series to it. The pin-sharp screen coupled with the twin sticks are a perfect fit for the game, so we were really happy to go ahead with the conversion. We wanted Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved to be the same fully featured experience it is on PS4 and PS3 — capturing all of the varied gameplay and enemies that can be encountered across its multiplayer modes and 100+ single-player levels. Among the technical challenges we faced, we had to ensure that we could hold a steady 60 FPS (frames per second) even when there were hordes of enemies chasing you down. The Vita’s graphical architecture is quite advanced for a handheld platform, but it is not at the same level as PS4, so our graphics team looked at how we could achieve comparable visual fidelity between the two versions while still keeping the game silky smooth. One advantage is that the Vita’s display is lower than a 1080p TV, so we did not need to flood the game with as many pixels every frame. This instantly helped to free up GPU (graphics processor unit) time, along with a little CPU (central processing unit) time. However the complex shaders and lighting wizardry that was used to define the vibrant Geometry Wars world on PS4 was a bit too much for its sibling to cope with, so we had to deploy some developer tricks to achieve similar results, and after a few months, we had something that not only looked spot-on, but also maintained that all-important framerate. Whilst this graphical work was happening, the gameplay guys worked on the actual playability of the game on Vita. Geometry Wars is all about the way in which the ship moves and responds to the player’s input, so we checked out the way in which the dead zones can affect the movement of the craft and the way it responds. The process is a little different for every platform, but it’s crucial for ensuring that the game always feels just right on each and every device available. After working through the single-player component, we then concentrated on multiplayer. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved on Vita still has 8-player competitive mode of the console versions. We used Activision’s Demonware service for this; it’s cross-platform, which essentially allowed us to carry a lot of the same code between various versions of the game. Things were going well until we got to local cooperative multiplayer… On PS4, you need additional controllers to play Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved with a partner. Obviously, there’s no way to achieve that on PS Vita, so we were initially a little stumped. The easy option would have been to take the feature out altogether, but we sat around and thought about other possibilities. In the end, we came with a unique two-player co-op format in which players sit opposite one another and play the game simultaneously on the same screen. Player 1 uses the D-Pad to move and the nearest analog stick for shooting, while Player 2 uses the other analog stick for moving with the face buttons to shoot. This combination might seem strange at first, but it’s actually easy to pick up, so you can sit together with your buddy / partner / enemy on the sofa and share a little light Vita relief. I hope this post has shed some interesting light on how we’re bringing Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved to PS Vita. We are really pleased with the results and cannot wait for you to experience the game for yourselves. It’s also really exciting to announce that the PS Vita version will be free to all PlayStation Plus subscribers as part of July’s Instant Game Collection starting next week, so we hope to see you all posting some astronomically high scores on the leaderboards soon! 12. Welcome back to PlayStation Underground, our online show about video games! Today, we are pleased to host and honored to have our special guest, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida! Before we were all swept away by the hustle and bustle of E3, Shu stopped by to showcase his personal obsession with Bloodborne by braving a high-level Chalice Dungeon with absolutely no fear (but maybe a little bit of caution). Shu also shares his heartfelt appreciation for the project, his history with FromSoftware, and his favorite weapons to employ against flaming hell beasts. He got a Platinum Trophy on this game, people! My special thanks to Shu for stopping by to share his own Bloodborne character and face crushing defeat on camera… Let me know what you think in the comments, and remember that we’ll be back soon with more Underground in the weeks to come. Enjoy the show. View the full article

  17. Who’s ready to do some dimension-hoppin’? Today’s the day that Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation hits the PS Vita, and things are about to get zany. A remake of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, which appeared on PS3, this game features an improved RPG battle system, more scenarios, and extra dollops of fourth-wall-breaking humor! In Re;Birth3, you’ll take control of Neptune — CPU, Goddess, and all-around protector of the nation of Planeptune in the world of Gamindustri. Things are going pretty swell until you get tossed into an 80’s-tinged dimension of Gamindustri. In order to get back to your dimension, you’ll need to save this one from the nefarious Seven Sages alliance, who aren’t too fond of CPUs existing in this dimension or any other. You’ll fight in battle using four characters, all of whom can be paired up with four more characters for easy battle-swapping. By pairing characters up consistently, you’ll be able to unlock special bonuses, and blast the enemy with pair-specific attacks. The power of friendship transcends all dimensions! The attack system has also been improved to allow characters to perform up to five attacks in a combo, so now you’ve got even more chances to bury the enemy. While all that battle stuff’s going on, I’d like to also mention that the mini-game Stella’s Dungeon is back from Re;Birth2 and better than ever! In this roguelike mini-game, you’ll equip Stella with armor and weapons and send her to climb a tower in a quest for more items. This time, though, you can bring a friend! The NPCs you usually find in the cities, like Snake Hayter, D-Bag, and other lovely citizens can now join Stella in her item quest. Each Scout will bring their own stats and special skills, like creating fewer enemies or allowing you to keep your items after death. To think, such item-getting will be happening all while you’re fighting your own battles or even leaving your Vita in rest mode! On top of all that, we’ve added new scenarios, including some scenes with some not-so-friendly representations of mobile games, as well as streamlining the UI, and adding changes to dungeon maps. Now you can find random items by jumping to reveal hidden blocks, in a cheeky homage to some game I’m sure! All this, and you still get to craft special equipment, change your world with Plans, and experience the wacky humor of Gamindsutri! For the first time ever, we’ll also have special Re;Birth3 themes available for purchase on PSN. Let me just say, they’re very kawaii. So set your non-trademarked dimension-hopping machine to here and now (Look, you’re already there!) and pick up your copy of Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation! And try not to step on any butterflies in your transdimensional travels, or else you might be stuck in the 80’s forever! *new wave music echoes, fades away* View the full article
  18. Prepare for an adventure of enormously tiny proportions! Our latest pinball collaboration with Marvel will showcase their upcoming film, Marvel’s Ant-Man, only in theaters July 17th! Assume the role of Scott Lang, master thief turned Super Hero, as he fights to save the world on a microscopic level. The Marvel’s Ant-Man table will be available for Zen Pinball 2 on PS3, PS Vita and PS4 on July 15th! Just remember to purchase on PS3 or PS Vita and import to PS4 to play on all three systems. On the Marvel’s Ant-Man table, players will experience the breathtaking action of the upcoming Marvel Studios film as they’ll engage in heated combat with Yellowjacket in a multiball fight, duke it out as shrunken Ant-Man, help Hope Van Dyne train Scott Lang, and have an active role in side stories featuring Ant-Man and his friends. Heroes don’t get any bigger! We’re doing things with the Marvel’s Ant-Man table that will be completely new to both our game and the pinball genre as a whole, including shrinking pinballs and crazy new mini-games that will undoubtedly excite our biggest (and smallest) fans. We can’t wait to give all of our players a shot at this table! Working with Marvel to bring their properties to our pinball universe has been fantastic over the years, but we’re extremely excited to have teamed up with them on not just one of their films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe releasing this year, but BOTH of them, with Marvel’s Ant-Man joining our recently released Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron table on our Marvel roster! See you on the leaderboards! View the full article
  19. Everybody loves a good party game. That’s why we at Jackbox Games are constantly trying to make easy-to-play party games that can be played by everybody… literally. We’re not quite to “everybody†stage yet, but with our newest game, Quiplash, we’ve come pretty close. The game allows up to 10,000 participants in one game. And by one game, we truly mean one game – only one person needs to own the game for 10,000 people to play! Quiplash | PlayStation.com If you’re familiar with our recent games Fibbage and The Jackbox Party Pack, you’ll know that our games do not require controllers. While you fire up the game on your PS3 or PS4, players connect to the game using their phones, tablets, or any internet-connected device (even computers) by entering the unique game code into the “jackbox.tv†web site. This has also allowed for a big explosion in streamed games, where people are joining streams of our games and actually participating from afar. So with Quiplash, we decided to try to embrace this phenomenon by introducing a new feature we call: the Audience. Now, while an “audience†usually means a passive group of people who are just “watching,†in Quiplash, it’s different. The Quiplash Audience actually affects the outcome of the game by voting, kind of like on a reality competition show on TV. Quiplash pits two players’ answers to humorous prompts like “Another name for France†against each other. Then, the other players AND THE AUDIENCE (if there is one) vote for their favorite answer. The player whose answer receives the most votes, wins. “Oui Oui Land†or “Armpithairylvania That’s for the players, and Audience, to decide. Quiplash is played by 3-8 core players, and works with or without an Audience. If you have a party of 10 people, 2 can be in the Audience, and then they can get in the next game, letting two players swap out to the Audience. If you have a stream with thousands of viewers, they can all participate – up to 10,000, anyway. This is a big upgrade for us over our previous games, one of which (Lie Swatter) allowed up to 100 players in the same game. Our goal is to keep making party games that everyone – and maybe someday, literally everyone – can play simply by pulling out their phones. Sure, just watching our games can bring you plenty of laughs, but who wants to just watch when you can participate? That’s the idea behind the Audience. It’s kind of an “enhanced spectator†role, if you will – you actually affect the outcome of the game. We’re planning more and more of this in our future games, but for now, we hope our first stab at this feature in Quiplash is a successful first stab, without anyone getting hurt. It’s not that kind of stab. Check it out! View the full article
  20. Hello everyone, we’re super excited to announce that Red Goddess: Inner World is coming to PS4 tomorrow, June 30th! We’re talking about a Metroidvania with an epic journey that features mystical-fantasy storytelling in a universe filled with symbolism. The atmosphere is conveyed through a unique art style and immersive gameplay, a brawling adventure game where you play as a young goddess named “Divine†to explore her inner-mind with the objective of remembering and recovering her own powers. Divine is confused and haunted by her past. She is in imminent danger — something mysterious and unknown is tearing her apart from the inside out, destroying her mind, her soul. To save herself, she must explore her own mind and the planet that exists within it. This exploration is fraught with impediments and obstacles. The journey begins when Divine decides to right this wrong by exploring her own subconscious, where she will discover a planet within her own mind made up of mountains, forests, caves, villages, and perils unknown… a vast space for players to explore. Red Goddess lets players explore a non-linear map, and it emphasizes backtracking with new moves and skills to access new areas. But combat, with its simple red and blue factions mechanic is where it truly shines to make Red Goddess a memorable gaming experience. There are three playable characters: Divine, helped by two alternate personalities, Rage and Fear, who embody her emotions and have their own unique skills and abilities. The enemies, meanwhile, are her own negative thoughts. You can shift between Divine, Rage, and Fear characters with a quick tap of the R1 and L1 buttons. When you do select one character, the other half appears as a “mask†of the main character. The mask appears following you everywhere in the game, and could turn against if you activate some traps. Red Goddess features new and progressively more deadly challenges for the player. Unlocking new powers and unravelling the mysteries, survive attacks from dangerous creatures, solving puzzles and defeating the powerful bosses. Check out our trailer, showcasing in-game footage, to get a glimpse of what to expect when we take you to Red Goddess: Inner World. We’re an independent game developer with only six people based in Spain with a focus on creativity. Now our dream comes true: Red Goddess: Inner World on PS4! Be sure to check out Red Goddess:Inner World, you can pick up an awesome platformer with epic boss battles! Thanks for reading. We’d love to answer any questions and read your reactions, so please leave your comments below. View the full article
  21. Hello! I’m Zeke Virant, the sole developer of Soft Body. It’s coming out later this year for PS4 and PS Vita with cross buy support. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the game, Soft Body is an action-puzzle game that infuses the twin-stick shooter with a surreal sense of control and style. Inspired by the simplicity and joy of twin-stick shooters and other arcade games, players take control of two beautiful, gooey snakes at the same time (one with each analog stick). Together, you use the snakes to paint the world, which continually changes around you, while dodging bullets and popping enemies. Both soothing and tense, Soft Body combines the challenge and twitchy fun of quick-restart action games with a smooth, meditative aesthetic. Today, I’m happy to give you all a glimpse of Soft Body’s two different single-player modes: Soft Mode and Hard Mode. With Soft Mode, I wanted to create a game that offered a smooth difficulty curve and levels that flowed into each other visually and aurally. I understood that learning to control two characters at the same time is a complicated affair, and so I designed a mode that could facilitate people gradually learning the game’s mechanics and rules. In Soft Mode, you take control of the Soft Body and the Ghost Body but are not always required to control them at the same time. By default, the Ghost Body is attached to the Soft Body and will follow it around — but separating the two bodies is simple. By pushing the right analog stick from its centered resting position, the Ghost Body detaches from the Soft Body and becomes independent. If the right analog-stick returns to its resting point for one second, the Ghost Body will automatically return to the Soft Body and reattach. That being said, Soft Mode is not “Easy,†but it’s certainly not as tough as Hard Mode. With Hard Mode, I wanted to take full advantage of the game’s unique, brain-splitting mechanics. I wanted to make something that could push people to master the challenge of controlling two things at the same time — something stoically difficult, unforgiving, but fair and rewarding. Hard Mode gives you control of both bodies at the same time, all the time. If either body is popped by an enemy or a projectile, it’s game over, and you restart from the beginning of the level. Soft Body is an unusual twin-stick game, and I want people to experience the full breadth of its controls. For me, the way it feels to control the two snakes is the most important aspect of the game. My desire to make Soft Body’s movement feel great has driven the game’s development and informs almost every aspect of the design. From the shape of the bullet patterns, to the sound of painting a wall, Soft Body’s mechanics encourage movement and give personality to the game’s tense and joyful fiction. With Soft Mode and Hard Mode, I’ve worked to create a single-player experience with multiple ways to play and enjoy the game. View the full article

  25. We’ve had a roller-coaster of a time since our last update to you all. PlayStation invited us to Los Angeles to present Shadow of the Beast as part of the line-up of games coming to PS4 at one of the biggest gaming events on the planet, E3! For us, this was a huge honor — particularly with the game still being pre-alpha; but we were both delighted and excited to have another opportunity to showcase the gameplay. As a studio we’ve been working hard planning out the other levels for the game, being careful to try and stick to our brief that every level needs to feel different to every other one. We’re still building out these environments, but we wanted to take the opportunity to share some new screenshots — both from the “Arid†level that we showed at E3 and a sneaky early-peek at how some of the other levels are shaping up. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can share a more in-depth look at some of the wilder, more exotic locations and creatures that we’re planning to include in the game! For gamers, one of the great things about E3 is getting to see so many amazing titles in action, and I was lucky enough to be there in-person representing our studio. While I was there I had an opportunity to sit down with the PlayStation.Blog team to talk about the game — this was a great chance not only to have a lot of fun talking about Shadow of the Beast but also to show off the game in a livestream that everyone could see. For those who didn’t get to attend the show but who are interested in what we’re doing, we’ve included the full interview below — we hope you’ll enjoy this look at a slice of live gameplay and general chat about how we got here: On a final note, we were really humbled by the positive feedback that readers of PlayStation.Blog gave us for the game on our previous post. We just wanted to let you know that it was hugely motivating for everyone here, and we’re still pushing like crazy to try and make sure we build a game that lives up to your expectations and everyone can have fun with. Thanks for reading, Matt and the team at Heavy Spectrum View the full article
