Normally when you forget your backpack on the way to the bus stop, you either leave it behind or run back home to get it. In Nia’s case, however, her backpack is a living monster named V. And V is trying real hard to catch up to Nia before it’s too late. Also, he may start the apocalypse along the way… All part of the fun in MonsterBag, which launches this week exclusively on PS Vita. MonsterBag is a colorful, charming puzzle game about avoiding the humans that stand between Nia and her backpack. It’s also a little terrifying, and will require your full arsenal of skill and wit to get through. In the process, you may or may not begin the apocalypse, which is a pretty awful thing to start over a forgotten backpack. As a bonus, it’s free for PS Plus subscribers this month! Also, the critically-acclaimed action RPG bastion is coming to PS4 this week. If you got a super-charged kick out of Transistor last year, see the original project that put developer Supergiant Games on the map. For a full list of games coming to PlayStation this week, read on. And enjoy the Drop! New PlayStation Games This Week Aaru’s Awakening PS4, PS3 — Digital (Cross Buy) When Aaru’s Awakening started out as a school project at the University of ReykjavÃk, the team wanted to create an original platformer. They thought the genre is congested, so new ideas were essential. Inspired by the teleportation gun in Unreal Tournament, the team came up with the idea of a teleportation themed platformer. Bastion PS4 — Digital Bastion is an action role-playing experience that redefines storytelling in games, with a reactive narrator who marks your every move. Explore, upgrade weapons, and fight your way to victory. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin PS4, PS3 — Digital, Retail The definitive edition of Dark Souls II, including all the Dark Souls II content released to-date in one package. Upgraded visuals leap from 30 frames per second to a targeted 60 frames per second with 1080p gameplay, adding a whole new level of smoothness. Element4l PS Vita — Digital Element4l is an immersive and experimental platform game, with a strong focus on flow and smooth gameplay, wrapped in an exceptional soundtrack by Mind Tree. In Element4l, you control four elements that are bound together on a journey to shape life. Your only hindrances are nature and the sun. It takes a different, innovative approach to classic platform games and challenges you to rearrange your reflexes. Krinkle Krusher PS4, PS3, PS Vita — Digital (Three-Way Cross Buy) Krinkle Krusher is an action castle defense where you cast elemental spells to defend your kingdom from twisted and hungry creatures called Krinkles. After several generations of peace, they happen to come back exactly when the Ancient Tree bears its first fruits in centuries, and of course a cake was made from it. MonsterBag PS Vita — Digital Forgetful Nia leaves behind her monster backpack, V, on her way to the bus stop. In a world afraid of monsters, help V catch up to Nia while avoiding being seen by the humans. Oh, yeah! Watch out for the apocalypse. Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones PS4, PS3, PS Vita — Digital (Three-Way Cross Buy) Stealth Inc. 2 is a puzzle platformer where you play the role of a clone escaping a sinister and high-tech testing facility. Stealth Inc. 2 tests both your brain and your reflexes across 60 varied levels linked together in a sprawling overworld. Death is never more than a few moments away, but one of the few advantages of being a clone is that death isn’t all that permanent. Tower of Guns PS4, PS3 — Digital (Cross Buy) Tower of Guns is a fast-paced, bullet-hell, first person shooter with randomized levels and enemies, power-ups, epic bosses, and tons of unlockable items and weapons. You never know what to expect next! It is a pure FPS experience for players who just want to shoot stuff, battle gigantic bosses, collect loot, and upgrade their abilities. Hello everyone. Thank you so much for your interest in Bloodborne during launch. We wanted to share some tips and guidance for the multiplayer experience for those that are encountering issues or have lingering questions. If you’re sensitive to spoiler content, please be advised that the below does contain material related to the story. Online MultiplayerBloodborne features both cooperative and versus online multiplayer functionality. Utilizing the new Suspend/Resume feature to put the PS4 into Rest mode without shutting down the game first causes players to be unable to complete matchmaking. Please be sure to restart the game in order to make sure you are able to connect online and matchmake for multiplayer. This issue will be addressed in an upcoming patch. Cooperative PlayBloodborne features cooperative play for up to 3 players max. Below, the player initiating the cooperative session is the “host†and players who respond to that are the “guests.†Cooperative Play rules: The goal of cooperative play is to join forces and work together to defeat enemies. Initiating cooperative play: Host uses/rings the Beckoning Bell Guests use/ring the Small Resonant Bell Host and guest (up to 2 guests) are connected, and play within the Host’s game Hints The “Beckoning Bell†can be found within the Hunter’s Dream when you have one or more Insight points. You can acquire the Small Resonant Bell from the Insight shop that appears in the Hunter’s Dream once you have at least 10 Insight points. If you have already defeated the boss in the area you are currently in, you won’t be able to use the Beckoning Bell. However you will still be able to use the Small Resonant Bell to join other player’s games as a Guest and assist them. The game does not match players who are too far apart in their current player Level. Cooperative Play Completion Once players successfully defeat the boss enemy in the area they are joined to, the guests receive a bonus reward and are returned to their own world/game. Cooperative Play Incompletion If the host or guest(s) die, or if a guest uses the Silencing Blank item, the guest(s) are returned to their own world/game, and do not receive the bonus reward. Password The multiplayer matchmaking for cooperative play is automatic and random. However by setting a password for your session, other players can enter the same password and be joined to your game. Passwords can be up to 8 letters long. *Passwords are only used for cooperative play, not Versus PvP sessions. The game does not match players who are too far apart in their current player Level. PvP Versus PlayVersus PvP allows players to face off against one another in combat. In the below outline, the player that gets invaded is the “Host†and the invader is the “guest.†Also note that in certain areas within the game, there can be up to two guests or invaders within a host’s game/world. Versus Play Rules When a host is in an area where a “bell-ringing woman†is present, Versus PvP invasions are possible. The “bell-ringing woman†appears when playing cooperative play or when the “Sinister Resonant Bell†is used, but there are rare areas in the game where she appears on her own. The objective for the guest player that has invaded another player’s game is to defeat the host. If the invader is successful, s/he will be returned to his/her own game/world. Initiating Versus play Guest uses/rings the Sinister Resonant Bell. Host begins cooperative play, or uses Sinister Resonant Bell to summon the bell-ringing woman. Guest is transported to host’s game/world. Host and guest play in Host’s game/world. Hints When the Host’s Level is still low, the Bell-Ringing Woman will not appear when initiating Coop play. You can acquire the Sinister Resonant Bell from the Insight shop that appears in the Hunter’s Dream once you have at least 10 Insight points. Versus Play Completion If the guest is able to defeat the host, s/he will receive a reward and be returned to his/her game/world. Versus Play Incompletion If the guest dies, or the host makes it to the boss fight area, or if the guest chooses to use the Silencing Blank item, the guest is returned to his/her own game/world without receiving a reward for completing the versus play session. Multiplayer within Chalice DungeonsYou can also play Multiplayer within Chalice Dungeons. In order to do so, all players must have the same Chalice Dungeon saved on their PS4. You can either share a dungeon you created from the Ritual Altar, or you can join dungeons created by other players via the “Ritual Altar†or the “Makeshift Altar.†By using Chalice Glyph, you can share a dungeon with just the person you have shared the Code with. Hints There are certain requirements to joining a Chalice Dungeon created by another player. Normal Dungeons: If you have used that Chalice to create a dungeon, you will be able to join by searching. Root Chalice Dungeons: If you have already acquired the Root Chalice for that Ritual Level or Area, you can either search or join from search. We will discuss Chalice Dungeons more in future posts here on the PlayStation.Blog. Please feel free to share your questions and comments below; the team will be reading. On behalf of Japan Studio and FromSoftware, thank you to our beloved fans and the amazing PlayStation community for supporting Bloodborne. We’re overwhelmed with how the game has been received, and we look forward to continuing to fight alongside you (or against you) in and around Yharnam! View the full article

One of the most important components in the Geometry Wars games is the enemies. The new update for Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved has a range of new enemies, so I thought it might be interesting to give you an insight on the process on how we implement them into our game. First up we have to have a reason why we want to bring an enemy into the game. There are a variety of reasons; sometimes they can help us explore a new level concept, other times they can be to provide a new strategy for the player to learn in the battle. In the case of this new enemy, which we’ve nicknamed Battenberg (after the cake), we wanted to create a scenario where the player would have to consider where they are shooting, as it could increase their current level of jeopardy. Next up is the behavior. Geometry Wars is a very intense shooter, and we can have a lot of enemies on screen at any time. So when we consider enemy behavior, it has to be clearly defined and strong so that the player can anticipate how things will develop in the game once it appears. We devised that this enemy should be two stage as the player will recognize its docile state and will clearly see its active state. Once we have sketched out a few more details on the enemy we start to prototype it in the game. We have an internal way in which we can quickly implement the basic enemy design. We then test that enemy, or waves of that enemy, on a plain level against the player ship. This gives us a good idea if it is achieving what we want. Initially we had this enemy working functionally — it would meander around the screen and if you hit it with a bullet it would rapidly charge at your ship. But after a short while we found some exploits in its behavior. Once you shot it, you could keep charging at it and avoid it. Here we needed to decide if it was worth pursuing or just cutting; we all agreed that the overall concept for the enemy was sound, we just needed to refine this implementation. After more iteration we devised an enemy that would actually split into four sections, two of which would charge towards you, the other two would move in a fixed blocking pattern. This solved the player being able to charge out of the way, and also allowed us to channel the player’s movement as they avoided the other two parts that chased towards the player on different paths. Things were looking good so we then got our artist to create the aesthetic look for the enemy. They are first modeled in Maya, and then when they come into the game we actually create the unique neon glow look with the game’s internal graphics shaders. Here you can see the stages from wireframe, then the polygon surfaces and finally the in-game object with the glowing surfaces. The yellow circle objects are the blockers and the pointy purple objects are the deadly tracking darts that race towards you. So even at this stage an enemy is not guaranteed to go into the final game. The final step involves us placing the enemy in other levels with a range of enemies. Here we can see if the behavior and look of the enemy stands out and compliments the current cast of bad guys. After many hours of playing and a few tweaks we were really happy with this new enemy. It has a presence when it appears and it does make you consider where to spray your bullets, but its behavior is clear enough that players can still take it out when they focus on it. I’m sure many of you will enjoy destroying this new foe, and discovering the other new enemies that are lurking in the ultimate adventure mode in Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved. And for those waiting on Geometry Wars PS Vita news: yes, it is coming! I don’t have any more info to share right now, but keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog for more updates. View the full article

A year and three months ago, our team collaborated for the first time to take part in the Ludum Dare game jam that led to the Titan Souls prototype. Before the theme was announced, we sat and thought of different ways we could attempt to make a Shadow of the Colossus-inspired boss rush game in three days — an over-ambitious idea for a game jam, but that’s pretty much how we started. Once the theme “You Only Get One†was announced, our game became its own thing — an intensely difficult one vs. one boss-a-thon where you have one hit point, one arrow, and one task — hit their weak spot. Luckily for us, people seemed to like it! Since almost immediately after finishing the jam, we’ve been working on the full version with Devolver Digital, and it’s amazing to see our journey from three-day game jam to full PlayStation Store game nearing its end. To celebrate, we’ve put together the video above showing off some of the differences between the original prototype and finished game: 1080p gameplay, 60 frames per second 360 degree aim and movement Engine, art, animation, and soundtrack remade from scratch Better-balanced, more complex/varied Titans Loads more polish Much bigger world, many more Titans, numerous areas with hidden secrets New Game Plus Titan Souls is out on April 14th for PS4 and PS Vita, and is part of Spring Fever 2015. Gosh, I feel like it was just yesterday that I finished up Demon Gaze from Experience, Inc. Now the studio’s next game for PS Vita, Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy, has been making me neglect my poor Furby again! I know, I know, you guys can’t get your mitts on it until June 9th, but I thought you’d appreciate a little insight into my experience with the game along with a brand spankin’ new trailer! So everybody who knows anything about dungeon crawlers knows that there are three important things in them: a cool setting, challenging gameplay, and customization. And let me tell you, Operation Abyss has all three in spades. A Cool SettingDemon Gaze was good. Hell, it was great, but rollin’ around the forest with my elf crew a la Robin Hood (the fox, not the person) felt a touch… normal. With Operation Abyss, Experience throws the forest and little woodland critters out the window, and really challenges the genre by replacing them with the towering skyscrapers of near future Tokyo, and the dark, dank depths of an abyss that’s threatening to swallow it whole. Every step in this sci-fi game gives me the creeps. The art makes each baddie beautifully revolting, and pairs perfectly with the haunting tunes that drift through my headphones as I stalk the hallways of the abyss. Challenging GameplayExperience has been challenging me with its expertly designed dungeons and enemies. The baddies here are Variants who have been threatening to crunch the bones of every Tokyo-ite ever since they started spawning deep in the abyss. Every time I venture into a dungeon, I’ve had to hold my breath a bit and occasionally dine-and-dash to avoid getting smashed by a powerful Wanted Variant. These foul beasts pop up if you overstay your welcome trying to snag some hot sci-fi style loot in a dungeon. It’s a dangerous game that’s encouraged by the Rise and Drop system. The longer you stay down in the abyss, the tougher enemies get, but they also have sweeter drops, too. Sometimes I wish I was more of a gambler… Customization StationOh dear, golly me is the customization sick in Operation Abyss. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but each member of your squad, the Xth, has the awesome ability to Code Rise which lets them access the Genome of a great person from history to unleash powerful skills, and guide their development to become a slick ninja warrior, or a rough-and-tumble bruiser. So far, my favorite strategy has been assigning my favorite character the Xuanzang Blood Code, placing him in the front row with the sweet Psycho Knuckles I found, and letting him pummel the Variants to pieces. But that’s just one of the myriad of strategies you can use with the Blood Code system. I know my pal Tiffany prefers rockin’ a team with Jeanne d’Arc — you’ll have to figure out your own favorite in June! And since we have a couple months, we’ve even managed to squeeze some awesome DLC into our production schedule! You’ll be able to snag our devilish Dark Hero Portraits for free any time in the first month after release! We’ll also be bringing out some awesome Swim Team Xth Squad Portraits for just $0.99, because you can never have enough options. Early adopters will also have the chance to pick up some bonus content DLC for free that will make things a little safer… or more challenging! This bonus DLC will let you save a few additional times within the Abyss with three bonus Power Recorders, or increase the strength of your enemies for some extra exercise with Hachi’s Workout Pack! Alrighty now, I could literally go on for days about the features and awesomeness that is Operation Abyss (I’m pretty verbose), but the boss says I need to leave some for later. So with that, I’m going to get back to work! If this is the first you’ve heard of Operation Abyss, make sure you check out our website for more details on this PS Vita exclusive, and if you just can’t wait until June, I recommend picking up Demon Gaze for a taste of what you’ll be in for! You know what, I think Experience, Inc. just might be the best DRPG developer in Japan right now. What do you think? View the full article

Hello and greetings from Wales Interactive, the studio behind the haunting indie thrillers, Master Reboot and Soul Axiom. I’m Ben Tester, marketing guy and environment artist, here to announce that our sci-fi action running game, Infinity Runner, is heading to PS4 faster than a silver bullet! We’re proud to be launching not just our first, but Wales’ very first PS4 title, and thrilled to be bringing you the best version of the game yet. With new stylized visuals and 56 Trophies to collect, expect Infinity Runner to hit PlayStation Store on April 22nd for the same price as a London pint! In Infinity Runner, you’ll find yourself desperately trying to escape a decaying starship and the clutches of terror within. Deep inside this leviathan something terrible hunts… out of myth and legend the last werewolf stalks the ship. Unluckily for you, not only will you have to deal with the prospect of being hunted down and torn apart, but also you’ll bump into some of the last inhabitants of the ship, which will require the skills of those reasonably priced mixed martial arts lessons you picked up last summer. Did I forget to mention you’ll be doing all this butt naked? The player will control the protagonist, the prisoner, from a first-person perspective as he is challenged to escape from the gargantuan spaceship. The corridors will seem never ending and yet your surroundings are constantly changing as you progress through the various areas of the ship. Your only chance of escape is putting your trust in the mysterious voice that guides you — the same voice that woke you from your chamber. As you progress through the game, your guide will feed you bits of information, which will leave you questioning why you are on this godforsaken ship and is it even possible to survive and escape The Infinity. Your quick reflexes will be tested, with a stream of evasive obstacles and other surprises thrown your way. You’ll face off with inhabitants of the ship, the guards that foolishly attempt to stop your escape. They’ll trigger combat sections, which uses a dynamic targeting system that builds a difficulty curve throughout the game and forces you to react fast! Increase your high score by grabbing data packets and searching out that one pick-up which changes all the rules. With this, you become the hunter and the guards become the hunted… Unleash the beast inside you! Tired of mashing buttons? No problem, we’ve taken advantage of DualShock 4 motion with this one so you can jump, slide, and dodge your way around the ship with just the flick or tilt of your controller — and all whilst you’re playing in 1080p at a targeted 60 frames per second. Infinity Runner is a fun, fast, casual game that will keep you on the edge of your seat and offers a fresh, sci-fi twist on the classic running genre! If you have any questions then leave your comments below. Cheers! View the full article

Now, if your heart’s racing, you’re sweating — you’re frazzled because you missed the PS4 blu-ray, stay calm! Here’s the link to the PS Vita retail version. << Buy It Here! Don’t Miss Out! Whew, okay! Now that you’re relaxed, I think you’re ready to sit back and read the blog post! GETTING RIGHT TO IT… WHAT’S BEHIND CURTAIN NUMBER ONE? A full PS Vita retail release Includes a PS Vita card and case (factory sealed) Region-Free Available now for $30 USD Estimated ship date: 3-4 weeks OH, YES? TELL ME MORE!This limited edition PS Vita retail version comes to you on an official 2 GB PS Vita card, busting at the seams, filling 19.8 MB of its capacity. It comes factory shrink wrapped in your standard issue official blue case with new front and back cover art (different from the PS4 version). It’s region free, so it’ll play on all of your PS Vita systems, worldwide. As with the PS4 version, it’s the real deal and part of the official PS Vita game library (PCSE-00630 to be exact!). What that means is that if you’re aiming for a complete collection, you can’t miss it! To make things extra special, it also sports retail exclusive gold themed PS Vita Live Area art, including a new icon and seal. It can install alongside the digital version if you already have it, and is 100% compatible with the existing Cross Save feature. Using Cross Save, you can pick up where you left off on the PS4, PS3, and/or digital PS Vita versions. Another fun fact: This retail release is also unrated; the first (and currently only) North American PS Vita game without an ESRB rating. Why, you might ask? Well, that’s a tale for another blog post, but suffice to say, the ESRB was kind enough to allow it to be released without one (shout out to Rocco!), and that means big cost savings passed onto you! With limited print runs, every cost adds up. Without the rating classification, I’m able to sell it for a much lower retail price. It’s available for pre-order right now at http://vblank.fangamer.com for $30. Order now, before it’s too late! Estimated ship date is 3-4 weeks. A TALE OF RETAILLast November, one of the most important packages of my life was delivered. I wasted no time and immediately tore it open to find thirty blue PS4 games. Catching a whiff of that surprisingly not patented “new shrink wrap smellâ€, I reached in and pulled one out. It was a game I could call my own in more ways than one. Releasing a retail version of Retro City Rampage DX on PS4 Blu-ray was a dream come true, and again, I can’t thank everyone at Sony enough for allowing it to be it possible. As more and more games shift to digital-only releases, having that trophy of your work to hold in your hands and put on your wall means more than ever. Having gone from developing games for other studios to starting my own studio, developing my own games, and then publishing my own retail SKUs has been incredibly surreal. Of course, we wouldn’t be here today to unveil a second retail SKU of RCR:DX if it weren’t for you, the fans! Thanks to your support of the PS4 retail version, a door was opened to make another dream come true – that is, release official cartridges! PS Vita cards, to be specific. If the PS4 retail version hadn’t done as well as it did, this PS Vita version would never have come to be. THE ROAD TO PS VITA WAS PAVED WITH PS4 As the first indie to self-fund and self-publish a PS4 retail release, there were a lot of unknowns. As I stepped into the uncharted territory, no one knew how it well it would do, exactly how many copies to print, or even if it would be profitable. It was a risk. Like many indie ventures though, it was driven not by revenue, but by passion — much like going indie in the first place. When I looked at the numbers, breaking even didn’t seem out of the question, and even if I came close to doing that, it would be worth it. I would have an official PS4 disc, shrink wrapped and straight off the presses, to hold up and put on my wall, and those of you who had been asking for years for a physical copy would be able to get your hands on one too. When the PS4 Blu-ray finally went on sale, it was a pleasant surprise to see it immediately fly off the shelves. By the next day, it was completely sold out. There was an unfortunate flip side though. I had underestimated demand, and because it sold out so quickly, it didn’t get much press coverage (it was sold out before it got on their radar). The months following were filled with a steady flow of fans were newly discovering what they’d missed, crushed that it was no longer available (sorry!). Their only option was to go on eBay and pay 5X (up to 10X!) the original price. It put things in a tough spot, because many had bought it due to the fact that it was such a limited printing, so printing more would disappoint those fans. Not printing any more was disappointing those who missed out. The best of both worlds though: Printing an entirely new retail version for a new platform! Before producing the PS4 Blu-ray version, I had long discussions to determine which platform to do. PS Vita was very high on the list, but there’s a bit more work involved in doing cartridges than discs, not to mention higher costs (there are like, a gazillion transistors in each one!). That was then though, when the road ahead was nothing but unknowns! Now, with a better view of the landscape, it’s not the crazy idea many thought it once was. THE RUNDOWNSo, yes, Retro City Rampage DX’s limited edition PS Vita retail version is available for pre-order right now at http://vblank.fangamer.com. Alternatively, if you’re still all about digital, Retro City Rampage DX is also available on PlayStation Store for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita / PS TV — 3X Cross Buy! That’s all for now! It’s a tower… of guns! What else is there to explain? Hey! It’s Jakub from Grip Games. Our newest game Tower of Guns is ready to open its doors and let all the curious visitors in. Please bring your weapons and personal armor with you! Tower of Guns is an old-school, first-person shooter. You only have one life, and if you get killed, you have to start from the beginning. All the levels, enemies, pick-ups and other elements of the game are completely randomized, so each run through the game is unique and everything is new each time you start over. As you play the game, you build up your arsenal, unlock additional items and perks, and get stronger. We have loaded Tower of Guns with content. There are more than 20 weapons and countless modifications and upgrades to get. There are items to collect that give you special abilities and perks that change the way you play. The game is hilariously over-the-top. How about getting a rocket-launcher and then giving it a machine-gun modifier? No problem! A shotgun with a ricochet modification? Bring it! Or stack a hundred “double-jumps†and never touch the ground again? Who would want to walk when you can fly! And you will need all the help and equipment you can get, because Tower of Guns is a bullet-hell style game in the first-person view. The enemies are merciless and you’ll need to be constantly on the move, dodging bullets. Forget cover mechanics or stealth missions — it’s time to re-learn strafing and double-jumping and enter each room with guns blazing. And just when you think you are out of the worst, you’ll meet one of the game’s many huge bosses, like the Doomball or the Egg Scrambler. You will die, and you will die a lot. After you unlock everything and conquer the tower several times, there is always the Endless Mode where you face a room after room of progressively more difficult enemies until you die. All your skills will be put to a test and you’ll be able to see how you are standing in the Leaderboards. If that’s still not enough for you, Tower of Guns has countless secret rooms to find and rare items to get. There are even secret stages to unlock and secret rooms within secret rooms! Tower of Guns is simply loaded with content and hours of fun. It’s out April 7th on PS4 and PS3 for $14.99, with cross buy support. And if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll get it for free! View the full article

Previously offered only to early purchasers of the full game, now for sale at $0.99 each, you can unlock 2 rare and powerful gods, Tonkararin and Kiri No Mashu to unite with. Going back to the demo for a minute — all progress made is transferable to the full game, so you’ll be able to continue your journey without losing a step. Oh, and a quick note about game modes — while there is only one mode of difficulty in the demo, you’ll have the option to change it without losing any progress after you upgrade to the full game for $19.99. So for any fanatics out there, the full game offers a game mode where you can immerse yourself with an estimated playthrough time of 100 hours! Can’t get enough of Oreshika news!? For those thirsting to know more about the game, we caught up with Shoji Masuda, game designer of Oreshika, who shared some exclusive behind-the-scenes stories. Take a look! As mentioned in the video, Oreshika is set in Japan a thousand years ago where people still believed that there were spirits and demons in the world. This is not everyday Japan by any stretch — it’s a complete fantasy world unique to Japanese culture. Another thing you won’t have much contact with in your everyday life, is the Japanese traditional art form of woodblock prints, known as ukiyo-e, and Japanese-style paintings, which served as inspiration for the distinct game art. We hope players will enjoy an escape-from-the-everyday by delving into the strange and mythical fantasy world that is Oreshika! Now that you’re in-the-know about Oreshika, how’d you like to add some Oreshika flair to your PS Vita home screen? We have two downloadable wallpapers pre-sized for the PS Vita for everyone to enjoy! Access the web browser on your PS Vita and visit here. Follow the instructions, and voilà ! You’ll be enjoying your new Oreshika-themed background wallpaper in no time. That’s it for today! Till next time… Go forth over my dead body… View the full article

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. — Lao Tzu It was about 5 years ago that I kicked off a side hobby project. At the time I was working at Petroglyph on an RTS game as a programmer during the day, and just wanted a fun side project to work on as a hobby for my evenings and weekends. Some people build model airplanes, some collect stamps. My hobby is making games. Axiom Verge | PlayStation.com I didn’t start off with Axiom Verge fully designed in my head. It really more started off as an exercise in game design. I wanted to deconstruct my favorite games from my youth and see what would happen if I took the best elements of each and put them together. The Yo-Yo weapon of Rygar and the grapple hook of Bionic Commando in the setting of Blaster Master and Shatterhand. What would fit together? What wouldn’t work? I’m trained as both an artist and programmer, and since I was doing a lot of programming as part of my day job, I started my hobby project with art. I started off just by drawing map areas. Nothing inside each of the rooms, just a collection of rooms linked together with an overall flow, including where people would need to get something to open up a new area. I then filled in the rooms with different platforms and obstacles to create a path. Here’s part of an early map — to show the whole thing would be a bit spoilery. This dates from May 2010. The names of the areas and characters have changed a lot since then! Next I spent about 6 months to a year doing nothing but drawing art — particularly the environmental tilesets. This one is dated June 21, 2010: Gradually the theme of the game started to come together. The more I drew, the more it started to coalesce into a unified, consistent world. Around this time it went from a side hobby to really becoming an all-encompassing passion for me. I’d wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a new boss, and immediately grab my sketch pad and draw. Here are some of my early sketches and what they eventually became. The TrapClaw was one of the first enemies I designed. I sketched it out around November 2010 and had it animated by March 2011. I sketched and pixelated one of the boss characters, Uruku, sometime in January 2011 and had him animated in February 2011. I didn’t code any of his gameplay until July 2013, at which point I also went back and revised his body segments to have a more tiled appearance. Writing music has been a hobby of mine since I was 19 or so, but I never actually had any formal training in it. I had finalized the music by January 2011. As the story came together with the art and the music, the idea of glitching came to mind. I think it occurred to me while I was animating the first pass on Trace, sometime in March 2011. I was thinking back to when I used to make games glitch by swapping out cartridges during gameplay or using my Game Genie. It used to fascinate me as a kid that I could walk through a glitched wall into an area that was never intended to be seen. Or I could make enemies behave in strange ways. Sometimes it would freeze the game, and sometimes it would do something useful, but I just loved being able to experiment with all of that stuff. It wasn’t until after most of the art and level design was done on paper that I actually started coding. I wanted to make sure I had all of the art assets done, because needing to stop programming right in the middle because you need an asset for a creature can really pull you out of your rhythm. It was important to me to get the feel of the game just right. An exploration action adventure game shouldn’t feel floaty. It needs to be precise and responsive. The enemies should be challenging but not impossible. 3 or 4 years into the entire process, the game was really starting to come together. There were long playable areas with polished art and music and an interesting game mechanic. But I was still working on it weekends and evenings, because I needed an income. I attended IndieCade and got a chance to show the game to Sony, and almost 6 months later, they offered to include me in the Pub Fund program. About one year ago, I switched from full-time to part-time at Petroglyph (essentially reversing the priorities I had for the previous 4 years) and 6 months ago quit my day job altogether. Axiom Verge was fully playable from beginning to end at that point, so my main focus was polish — figuring out good hiding spots for different weapons and powerups, having playtesters go through the game and see where they struggled, and fixing lots and lots of little bugs. A lot of people have told me they admire my tenacity for being able to stay dedicated to a project for so long. I’ve heard people remark that I must be a workaholic to come home from my day job and then work on my own game as well. I don’t see it that way. It’s been a true joy every step, and there was never really a point where I felt like I was grinding. It started as a hobby and ended the same way. And now, at long last, I get to share Axiom Verge with the world. View the full article

Hey everyone, this is Ramone Russell from San Diego Studio. It’s my favorite time of year… Spring is around the corner, the start of the baseball season is days away, and best of all: MLB 15 The Show launches today on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. This is a special year for the team in San Diego; it marks the 10th anniversary of The Show, which we’re commemorating with a special edition that includes a stunning steelbook case and tons of added in-game value. MLB 15 The Show includes a ton of new features and upgrades to the franchise, many of which we’ve talked about over the past few months. One we’ve been talking about since last year is Year-to-Year Saves, an unprecedented innovation in sports games and something that finally fulfills its amazing potential in this year’s game by letting MLB 14 users continue their Road to the Show, Franchise, and Season save files onto MLB 15 The Show and beyond. Curious about how it works in practice? Check out at the video below for a detailed look at Year-to-Year Saves: When it comes to gameplay features and improvements, MLB 15 The Show does more in a single year than any entry prior, too many to cover in a single blog post. Check out the huge list on TheShowNation.com. You can pick up MLB 15 The Show today to enjoy the upcoming baseball season, and welcome to the Show! Make sure you follow MLB The Show on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to get a behind the scenes look at the development of The Show with new screenshots and video shorts with MLB players. Regarding Online Support for MLB 14 The ShowGlobal server operation for MLB 14 The Show will be extended beyond June 18th. The timeline for when resources are diverted from the previous season’s online functionality is a difficult decision year in and year out, and not one we take lightly. In the case of MLB 14, we’ve heard your voices and your passion for The Show and we thank you for it. We will continue to support MLB 14 online for a duration that is comparable to earlier seasons. We’ll confirm a new later online shutdown date in the near future. View the full article

Yes, this is a real thing! For those PlayStation gamers that don’t remember (or, perhaps, hadn’t yet appeared on this Earth), PlayStation Underground was a video magazine and series of demo discs which Sony Computer Entertainment America produced in the late ’90s. Now, we’re bringing PlayStation Underground back in the form of an online show about video games. We play for a bit, talk it out, and sit on a pretty sweet couch. Simple! To celebrate the return of Underground, our friends at Harmonix brought an early build of the upcoming music rhythm reboot Amplitude for us to play. Spoiler: we got destroyed by Expert mode, but that’s okay because we tried our best. We’re aiming to roll out new Underground episodes every other week, with a vision of a weekly broadcast in the near future. If you tune into Underground in the coming months, expect to see upcoming game previews, and hear insider details from the best and brightest in the gaming community. Underground is just getting started, so you can expect a few things to change over the coming months as we fall into a rhythm of our own and tidy up the place. But for now, please sit back, fetch a refreshing beverage, and enjoy. We have a lot more to show you. View the full article

Hello everyone! We’re excited to let everyone know that our game Rack N Ruin will be launching tomorrow, March 31st on PS4. Whoo-hoo! For starters, let me tell you a little bit about the kind of game Rack N Ruin is. It’s a top down action adventure game, but it’s a bit different than your typical hack ‘n’ slash fare. You play as a diminutive demon wizard named Rack who leaves an endless path of destruction in his wake. Rack doesn’t dirty his hands or frail arms wielding crude metal sticks, but instead molds chaotic and elemental magic into fearsome weapons. Throw in some bullet hell patterns, item combinations, upgrades, and all the other trappings and you’ve got Rack N Ruin. Basic magic attacks aren’t the only things Rack has at his disposable. You will find a variety of items you can use. These items will react differently to the types of damage and weapons you use on them. For example, the Robot Parts item can spray a wave a bullets in all directions when hit with fire, or explode in a gaseous cloud of death when hit with shadow magic. Another item called the Prismatic Totem will place a turret within the world that takes on the properties of your particular magic spell. These items can be chained together to create an assortment of combos that can turn a basic attack into a screen clearing cacophony of destruction. With a little clever thinking, the player can transform any encounter into an experimental playground of death. Given that Rack has an endless arsenal that can reign death from any place and time, the creatures he sets out to slaughter aren’t benign little critters. Rather, they are ruthless and cunning. An angry knight will chase Rack around turns and to all corners of the map just to have the pleasure of beating him over the head with a sword. The demonic enemies are even more relentless — they will teleport all over the place, releasing a mixture of bullet patterns for Rack to swallow. These mechanics acting in unison serve to create an action adventure with both depth and fast paced action. So if exploring a complex and intricately handcrafted world while unleashing destructive magic upon everything in your path sounds up your alley, we think you’ll love Rack N Ruin. It comes to no surprise that there is still that need to bring Socom back to the masses. One of the biggest cries from the community has always been a remastered Socom II as that is where the majority feel the series peaked overall with features, gameplay, etc. One Socom fan has decided to bring the cries to Change.org with a petition which can be found at http://urgentfury.link/SocomII. We have created this short link just for this campaign. With a few strokes you can sign and share your support for Sony to create a Remastered Socom II. This comes in the wake of a similar petition for Modern Warfare 2 with over 183,000 signatures. It will be interesting to see if these kind of campaigns sway the powers that be to bring these style of games back to the new generation. There have been other attempts to bring back that Socom feeling, one that had pretty good traction was H-Hour by SOF Studios but as of late they have been riddled with controversy, loss of David Sears and completely alienating the community. This game is coming to Steam Early Access this month and they have stated the only hope of the game coming to PS4 will be a successful launch on Steam. A much different story than what was said during the KickStarter. Signing a petition is free and only takes about 1 minute vs the $250k that was spent by the community on H-Hour, so why not take a minute of your time and sign away, what can it hurt! One note to make is that the PlayStation Blog Share for Socom II was one of the highest up voted shares and we have not seen any result either… View the full article

San Diego Studio has included licensed equipment to enhance that characteristic authenticity, as well as implement year-to-year saves. The team is also introducing iconic baseball legends from all 30 teams, spanning 70 years of the sport’s history. And if baseball isn’t your bag, don’t sweat: the highly-anticipated Axiom Verge drops onto PS4 this week. Developed single-handedly by indie designer Tom Happ, this modern interpretation of the Metroidvania is deeply inspired by classic games, but pushed into overdrive with mind-bending puzzles and tons of weapons. If you want a great example of what a single, passionate game developer can do, look no further. Plus, it’s part of Spring Fever with a 10% PS Plus discount at launch. Bonus! I can’t get enough Bloodborne this week. It’s the first thing in some time that’s been able to tear me completely away from Final Fantasy XIV — though come Tuesday there will be some new stuff in Eorzea that will likely draw me back in.
