SHANE23 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 MaluNYMets ] CritiKiL ]I 'really need help' on how to get a much better connection speed? I have called and called Verizon' date=' but they don't offer much help. You can see why I do not play much, as a connection like 'this' would make anyone not play often. Also, would there be much of any difference, if I connected my PS3 DIRECTLY to the gateway? And lastly, how about having 'one cable internet line' dedicated 'only to the PS3'? Actually I have a complete 'media room' upstairs with the 'PS2', 'Xbox', 'XBox 360' and 'PS3'...but if I had to "dedicate one line just to the PS3"...that would be fine since the other consoles aren't played online as much. Just some advice on how to get Verizon to get me the type of DSL service 'without' changing over to FIOS or anything? My connection is 'Wireless Network' using a wireless gateway (modem/router in one). Thanks in Advance. [i'](Please give me your help/suggestions in a PM, Thanks!)[/i] I don't think DSL has high speed compared to cable or fios. You best bet would be for Fios or cable. Any reason on why you don't want to get it? The less you have running at the same time always works. Directly connecting usually gives you a better connection but if you have DSL I don't think it makes a huge difference. Not 100 percent sure on that information but thats my general understanding. Critikil I sent you a PM. Think of it this way. You have a house with 2 baths and a kitchen. A 1/4" runs water to all 3. If you use 2 at a time it can take care of your needs. If you need all 3 on then you might have some issues, lose pressure. So you upgrade the 1/4" to 3/4" now you can have all 3 and maybe add another bath. The internet works pretty much the same way. With my connection I can have quite a few things going on at the same time without affecting my connection. There are several here that have FIOS with 2X or 3X the upload which I would love to have so theirs can handle more. Until /6 or Sony comes out and tells us what kind of setup they are using for most of the online games we are only guessing. BUT if Socom is still P2P we want the people with the most upload to create rooms and stay as the "Host". Quote
GOAT Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 22 megs down 3 megs up.. of course with Socom it's better to be on dial up. Quote

SHANE23 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 It does seem that way doesn't it!? I wish they had the latency test implimented or even a connection indicator! How they screwed that up is beyond me. Quote

SURE! ~ The bastards (Verizon) who gave me the DSL 'promised' the best of at lest '5-7meg down' and '.7 to 1meg up'! As you can see, they failed me! Why would I 'trust' that their FIOS is going to be any better? They are only pushing the FIOS to get people to acquire the TV service as well. I love my DirecTV, and would only want their FIOS Internet. But if they failed me on the promising speeds of FIOS...then I would probably go to jail....(lol ~ Fool me once...you know 'that' story!) [/quote'] Technically that is not Verizon's fault. DSL quality and speed are strictly determined by linear foot. They may have seen that you were within a certain range BUT you might have been just outside that range in reality. FIOS does not have this issue and honestly you would be MUCH better off with it. There is no degredation with Fiber as there is with DSL. Cable has it BUT it takes a MUCH longer distance then we have to worry about. Quote
CritiKiL Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Yea, I remember in college about fiberoptics as, since the signal is a beam of light...the light loses NO strength of signal no matter how long the length. I think I will get it next year for sure though. Thanks guys! I really do appreciate the 'heads up' on this issue ;D Quote

Nikastylez Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Ehhh... don't be so quick about rushing out to get FiOS. I have FiOS and I don't get the speed that Verizion advertises. Regardless if that beam of light loses signal strength or not, I don't get what I was told I would get and Verizon doesn't know why. Quote

What are you running the speedtest on? Laptop, wireless, wired, PS3? If it is the PS3 it is NOT your connection. The PS3 browser isn't that good and has an issue with the pluggin I believe. There are several other factors that could cause low speeds. Bad modem, virus, malware, torrents and so on. If I can I will help you but I would need a lot of information. One of our guys was having serious issues. He let me log in to his router remotely and found that whoever set his router up set up the WAN port to 10Mbps HALF Duplex. It could be something very simple like that. It should be 100Mbps FULL Duplex which means that it can send and receive at the same time. Half means that one or the other. Quote

CritiKiL Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Well, I just upgraded my DSL from the 3meg/.7meg (less than 1 mbp/s) per/sec. to the 7meg/5meg per/sec. plan, which will be available for me to try out in 48 hours. Then I'll see if this really does matter! lmao Quote

Yea, I think comcast is expensive. I pay about $50 a month. Its more if you just have internet with them. I only have Comcast because there isn't any DSL where I live. Quote

How can I get a better upload speed? IF I have a lot of wires connected to my router that i necessarily don't use every day does it still feed out of my router? Quote

How can I get a better upload speed? IF I have a lot of wires connected to my router that i necessarily don't use every day does it still feed out of my router? NO. Unless you have a virus or malware. If your PC is connected but not doing anything it won't affect your network. Your PC will not hit the network unless you set something up. Updates, downloads (torrents) or a scehduled task. If you want to see what your PC is doing network wise in Windows open a DOS window. Start -> Run -> type CMD and hit enter. In DOS type NETSTAT and it will show ALL connections that your PC is connected to. If you see something that looks odd you can find out what it is. C:\>netstat Active Connections Proto Local Address Foreign Address State TCP g6h3qb1:1104 cs124.msg.sp1.yahoo.com:5050 ESTABLISHED TCP g6h3qb1:1108 sip38.voice.re2.yahoo.com:https ESTABLISHED TCP g6h3qb1:1120 jabber.800ceoread.com:5222 ESTABLISHED TCP g6h3qb1:1099 localhost:27015 ESTABLISHED TCP g6h3qb1:27015 localhost:1099 ESTABLISHED So you can see that I have Yahoo messenger connected and jabber. I had a lot more BUT you cannot see those numbers. ;D - Work info. Now if you see an IP address that you don't know, it could be a number of things. It could very well be a virus but it could also be one of your apps looking to update. Take that IP address and plug it in to a browser. I use SimpleCenter on my server. When I ran a netstat it showed an IP address of 72.32.7.180. I had no idea what that was so I used the IP address as a web site and it resolved to simplecenter.com. If it doesn't go to a site then my first thought would be that it is a virus. You can google the IP address as well to see if it is a legit domain. A virus OR malware WILL hurt your connection if they somehow have made your PC a proxy. Essentially using YOUR PC as a mail server or even a website! I have had people call me saying their PC is REALLY slow. Someone hacked their machine and setup a Porn site under their noses. They had NO idea! I also had a clan mate get threatened from his ISP for sending out a ton of spam. Well ofcourse it wasn't him it was a neighbor leaching off his wireless and sending it through his internet connection. ALWAYS assume someone is trying to hack your PC or steal your connection!!
