They hit the nail on the head about the hacked PSN
GeneralSarcasm replied to IRISH BULL's topic in Playstation
copied from ---------------------------------------- Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug (http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore. Edit #1: To those of you saying that this is speculation, you are correct. But, it is speculation based on a lot of facts and the outcome seems to make the most sense. 1. Rebug was released on 3/31/11. 2. First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11. 3. Word of "shady" sites finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website). 4. PSN goes down on 4/20/11 Now, you can believe Sony's PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion. Now, this isn't the first time Sony has fought back against the PS3 modders from getting on PSN. A couple of months ago we had a utility called f*ckPSN that changed the necessary header information that was being sent to Sony to allow modified consoles back online. We were able to use it for about a month. Then came the new TOS, the mass e-mail to PS3 customers, and software update 3.56 and 3.60. So, once again, yes this is all speculation, but it is speculation based on previous actions and known facts. Edit #2: Mathieulh just mentioned that he has been in contact with someone that has official access to the SCE devnet servers and it was posted to them today that only 3.60+ debug firmwares will be allowed on the dev network anymore. All earlier versions will be cut. If you want to retain your access you need to contact Sony and upgrade to 3.60 debug firmware. -
I'm thinking about picking up something to play while I wait. Any recommendations? (nothing over $15 please). I see a couple of interesting titles I've never played for $15 or less: Assassin's Creed (original): $14.99 Resistance: fall of man $9.99 Rainbow 6: Vegas $9.99 Fallout3: $12.99 Red Faction: Gorilla $14.99 Metal Gear Solid 4: $14.99

They hit the nail on the head about the hacked PSN
GeneralSarcasm replied to IRISH BULL's topic in Playstation
honestly I'm shocked that they don't have a backup PSN they could put up while they work on the real one. Even if this meant it was only partially down (say no PS store, home, etc) but we could play multiplayer games. -
man this sux really bad for me. my wife and kids just left for a 3 week vaca on saturday. I will be home alone for 2 weeks, and joining them for the 3rd week. If they dont get this shit back up soon I'm going to miss out on some serious socom time I will never get back...

yea if you kept yourself signed in you can still access and post. if you didn't you are screwed till PSN+web auth services are back up.

Early this morning, Nintendo released financial results for its just-ended 2010 financial year. They brag that the total combined sales of software for the DS handheld and Wii have surpassed 1.5 billion units, with 139 DS titles and 103 Wii titles breaking the 1 million mark. But, tucked away alongside all the fiscal cheerleading was the real news, that the House of Mario's finally confirming a new home console that's launching in 2012. A brief statement on Nintendo's Investor Relations page reads: To whom it may concern: Re: Wii's successor system Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011. We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles. Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012. Having the Playstation Network down for several days now has frustrated many video game fans. Some have even been demanding that Sony do something such as give away a free video game for everyone's troubles. It appears Sony may be doing something in response to all the trouble, but is it a bad idea? According to gamrFeed website, Sony is giving online gamers a deal on its PlayStation Plus service. The new promotional offer allows fans to have three extra months tacked onto the normal 12-month subscription. This deal is for the same usual price as a full year's subscription. The special deal will run until May 3rd. PlayStation Plus is the paid version of PlayStation Network which launched back in June of 2010. Subscribers of this service typically get early access to various content including game demos, betas, and other items of interest. Apparently, there are three-month subscriptions in addition to one-year subscriptions available for purchase. However, right now the PlayStation Plus website gives the scrolling update that the network is currently down. There's apparently another PS Plus deal in the works too, where Sony may give PlayStation Plus members a free copy of "Red Faction: Battlegrounds." It all sounds like a major bribe on the part of Sony to lure customers into its network. The PSN issue has been going on for five days according to some reports online, and may not be resolved until Tuesday. That's certainly a lot of unwanted downtime for Sony's network and its faithful users. However, something needs to be done or Sony may lose fans fast. With the recent news that Sony Playstation Network is down, will the PlayStation Plus deal be a good enough move by Sony? http://technology.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474979260074

if you could really log in maybe they are getting close... man that would make my weekend if i could play some socom tonight!

That's exactly what brought me back to console gaming... I got tired of the "pc upgrade rat race". You buy a new pc, everything runs great. After one year you are running everything at "reduced settings" (IE you are now at a disadvantage in multiplayer games), 2 years low settings. Upgraded needed. Atleast with consoles it's a level playing field... the game runs the same on every system, graphics, framerate, etc.

whatever you do DONT tell your wife or gf PSN is down... you will lose brownie points for not playing. It has to appear to be a choice you are making. -
