It’s been a busy month for us at Armature Studio with the PS4 launch of Dead Star via PlayStation Plus, and while we have plenty to talk about, we want to kick this off with some extremely exciting news: the stars of Ratchet & Clank are coming to kick some asteroid in Dead Star across a series of community events! Yes, that’s right! Soon – as soon as tomorrow, actually – you’ll be able to use everyone’s favourite Lombax in Dead Star, with Clank coming shortly thereafter. All you have to do is play Dead Star during the below times, and you’ll instantly unlock the respective pilot portrait. Ratchet Event Weekend Friday, 29th April at 16:00 PM BST (What time is that for me?) through Monday, 2nd May. Clank Event Weekend Friday, 6th May at 16:00 PM BST (What time is that for me?) through Monday, 9th May. These pilot portraits will be accompanied by additional in-game events that will occur throughout the above weekends, so keep an eye on the official Twitter page for more details! When last we posted here on PlayStation.Blog, Dead Star had just launched and we had revealed a handful of tips and tricks as you were just starting out. Now that everyone’s had some time to get familiar with the game, we wanted to offer a few more advanced pointers – especially since we just added three new playable ships to the game as part of the Kurg Ship Expansion. Without further ado, let’s take a look… Kurg Pilot Tips(1.) The Kurg Stinger’s Welding Beam may not deal high damage on impact, but it adds burn damage even at the lowest rank, preventing enemy shields from regenerating. A favourite tactic is to burn an enemy ship with a quick blast of the Welding Beam, then launch the Stinger’s Service Drones to finish them, while you’re flying off to your next target. (2.) The Kurg Engineer can drop a Construction Probe that acts as a spawn and repair location for your team. While the Construction Probe requires multiple upgrades to spawn raiders and frigates, even a Rank 1 version is a threat to the enemy crew. Try placing your Construction Probe deep in enemy territory just outside an outpost’s scanner range, allowing your team to make surprise attacks near your foes’ home base. (3.) The Kurg Juggernaut’s powerful Graviton Field slows enemy ships caught in its area of effect. When used in conjunction with the Juggernaut’s high-damage Energy Cannon, you can pin passing ships and bombard them from a distance. General Tips(1.) Commandeer AI – Every outpost has a group of Guardian AI ships that patrol its perimeter. If your team owns the outpost, you can commandeer the ships by pressing the right button / right. Commandeered ships will follow you and fight alongside your ship. You can also direct commandeered ships to attack a specific target by holding right and aiming at the target with the right stick. (2.) Communication – Communication is key to winning battles. You can communicate with your team even without using a mic by accessing the Quick Comms menu. Hold the down button / down to bring up the menu, then select the order you want to give using the right stick. Release the down button and your ship will send out the order to anyone nearby. Certain orders, such as Attack Here, will also drop a waypoint that your teammates can see on their scanner and as a directional icon on the edge of their screen. (3.) Cargo Containers – At the start of every match, as you head out to capture outposts, be on the lookout for Cargo Containers, which appear as grey boxes on your scanner. In addition to holding ore, Cargo Containers may generate Artefacts, which grant you and any nearby teammates valuable XP when picked up. If you’re enjoying Dead Star, please take a moment to tell your friends, family, neighbours, pets, stuffed animals, pretty much anyone who’ll listen; each and every mention helps our community grow. Conversely, if there’s something you don’t like about Dead Star, please let us know. That’s it for now, pilots – we’ll see you out in the battlefields of space! View the full article

Hello Pilots! My name’s Marek, I’m the co-founder of Infinite Dreams. I’m extremely proud to announce that Sky Force Anniversary, our modern air-based shooter, will launch on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita this summer! Sky Force Anniversary is a recreation of Sky Force, a title we made more than a decade ago — it made quite an impact on the whole mobile gaming industry. When creating Sky Force Anniversary, our main goal was to preserve the old-school, arcade shooter feeling of the original and make the game bigger, bolder, and more intense than ever. And to be honest — we think we did it. Sky Force Anniversary features an extensive single-player campaign where your main objective is to save the world from General Mantis — the nasty leader of evil forces. In order to defeat him you will have to blast through hordes of enemies, collect funds, rescue civilians, and constantly upgrade your ship with new, devastating power-ups. Throughout the game you will have access to various types of weapons, passive skills, and power-ups, starting from the impenetrable magnetic shield and ending with the mighty mega-bomb, which annihilates all visible enemies with a huge blast. What about enemies? Well, a game can’t call itself a shoot-’em-up without a plethora of opponents and bosses waiting for you around every corner. In Sky Force Anniversary there are tanks, fighters, jets, ships, turrets, bombers — we have them all. Okay, but what happens if you complete the whole single-player campaign? Well, there’s still plenty to do — you can invite your friends and play the game with local co-op, you can fulfill additional goals like completing a mission without a scratch, and finally, you can compete with other players by participating in weekly tournaments that take place on unique new levels, updated every seven days. We’re all super excited to join the world of PlayStation with Sky Force Anniversary — it’s a really big thing for us and we all hope you enjoy the game when it launches on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita this summer. And yes, it will most definitely support cross buy. View the full article

Hi, I’m Sean from Night School. We’re losing our minds over here! We’ve been driving toward this day for a long time, and are ridiculously hyped to announce that on May 31, everyone can enjoy Oxenfree in its coolest, scariest, most mind-freakiest form on PS4. A quick catch-up on Oxenfree: it’s the debut game from our studio, centering on a girl named Alex who brings her new step-brother Jonas to an overnight party on a decommissioned military island that goes horribly wrong. It’s a supernatural mindscrew of an adventure with tons of different outcomes and story paths that let you shape Alex’s life, the fabric of time and space, and the fate of a bunch of really pissed off ghostly creatures. Think Freaks and Geeks but with possession, time loops, and terror. When my cousin Adam and I started the company a couple years ago, we set out to make a game where players could interact with a big, dangerous story in new ways. With Oxenfree, we wanted to cast you in a thriller that was frightening, funny, and meaningful in varying doses. And unlike many other narrative games, we wanted you to play through it all with no cutscenes; freeing you up to explore, talk, and solve mysteries fluidly. We’ve added all kinds of improvements to push the experience beyond anything the public has seen yet, including transforming your DualShock 4 into the game’s supernatural radio via the controller’s speaker and light bar. But the most thrilling addition is the creation of a surreal New Game+ mode that will continue Alex’s story with a new purpose. I’m gonna try to do this without getting all spoilery. When you ________ the game the first time and come back to the game anew, Alex will have different, déjà vu tinged dialogue choices. Suddenly you realize that Alex is ________, and now you must ________ if you want to see tomorrow. Okay, this is proving more difficult than I thought! Just know that with this new content, Alex’s story will continue beyond the traditional “ending†into different locations, conclusions, and a completely tweaked understanding of the events on the island. We are extremely grateful for all of the love the game is getting, and honored to have received the IGF award for Excellence in Visual Art a few weeks back. Since we humbly agree that the game is pretty purty too, we’ve created a Dynamic Theme, also debuting May 31. It’ll showcase an evolving Edwards Island, changing to reveal timed events from the game. So turn on your PS4 at 8 PM and you’ll see the boat arriving. But turn it on at 1 AM and you’ll probably see something crazier. Can you tell we are stupidly giddy for you to play it? Well, we are! Launch can’t come soon enough! We suggest you stock up on adult diapers, or at least bring a couch buddy before diving in. View the full article

We have some unfortunate news to report that a number of copies of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End were stolen while in transit. While we are continuing to work with the police to resolve the matter — which is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation — it appears that a few copies of the game have surfaced in the UK. We know that very many of you have been looking forward with great anticipation and excitement to the latest masterpiece from Naughty Dog. From what I have played of Nathan Drake’s latest adventure, I can tell you that it is very much worth the wait. As with most Naughty Dog games, the unfolding story is such an integral part of the experience and for this reason we wanted to warn you to beware of the potential for spoilers to be posted by people with access to stolen copies of the game. An extremely talented team has worked long and hard to bring Nathan Drake’s greatest adventure to life and we would urge you to help us prevent this from being spoiled by purchasing copies of the game ahead of the launch date. Please rest assured we will be very vigilant to protect you from this as far as we can so you can enjoy Uncharted 4’s experience to its fullest on May 10. View the full article

Today is the release date of Stranger of Sword City on PS Vita, and it looks like reviewers are really enjoying it! If you’re unfamiliar with the game, be sure to check out our previous blog. To celebrate the launch, I thought it would be fun to provide you all with a quick guide to a couple parties recommended by the developer! Feeling Safe with StrangersThe first team composition the game’s director suggested is pretty well balanced and includes a bunch of characters from the Strangers Guild. If you’re the kind of person who gets a little nervous playing, this is probably the party for you! You’ll want to start by setting up a front row which includes a Human Fighter, Dwarf Knight, and Human Samurai. That combination will provide a decent amount of offensive power, along with a solid defense. In the back row, you’ll want to be running a Migmy Ranger, Human Wizard, and Human Cleric. And there you go! You now have a team built to last. Now, there’s no Elf on this team, but if you’ve got a hankering for one, feel free to change the Wizard from a Human to an Elf. The basic strategy with this party is to work on the growth of the front row’s Knight. He’ll be acting as the tip of your team, so he needs to be tough. At some point, you’ll probably want to class change the Wizard or Cleric to help your progression. As you reach further into the game, it might also be helpful to work a Dancer that can sing into your party to help you make it through the labyrinths as you start feeling more comfortable. Testosterone to the MaxOne of my favorite things about Stranger of Sword City is that not only can you create a fun and cute team, but you can also create a team of grizzled old veterans to challenge the labyrinths with, and this team is exactly that. When you’re creating this team, you might want to avoid setting all of their ages to match their looks, that is unless you’re the masochistic sort that is just looking for a huge challenge. If that’s the case, go ahead and make them old, just be careful not to let them get killed in battle since old characters can’t be revived as many times as young characters before they’re lost forever. Most of you will want to set their ages a bit younger to avoid playing what would basically be hardcore mode. Final ThoughtsWelp, those are the two parties I’d recommend you try out when you start, dood! One for newcomers of the genre, and one for grizzled veterans. Of course, it could be fun to try putting together your own Demon Gaze team in Stranger of Sword City too… Stranger of Sword City is out today on the PS Vita. If you haven’t picked it up already, I recommend doing that and putting your own party to the test! If you want to know more about the game, check out our official website. Now, back into that labyrinth… View the full article

Hello Earthlings, Tommaso from Housemarque here. The time to stand up for your planet has finally come! Alienation was announced at GamesCom in 2014, and since then we and Sony XDev have been working hard to make this the best game we ever released together. Alienation is not only a testament to the raw power of PS4, but also an important milestone for the arcade games of the future. Fans of Dead Nation will find the same ruthless gunfights and the overwhelming tide of enemies they loved to hate in our zombie title — with a boost: there’s no place to hide or escape; only skill and planning can get you out of the carnage in one piece! At the same time, those who appreciate Resogun will be mesmerized by the same familiar brand of total destruction and kinetic neon action our 2013 title is famous for. And then there’s all the new stuff, propelling Housemarque to new heights and players into a vicious loop of “one more game and then we’ll stop…†Alienation features three customizable classes, four-player drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer (But you can play solo!), a bunch of game-changing active and passive abilities, loot of various rarity, XP and character leveling, an Invasion mode where you hunt other players down or defend from invaders, configurable weapons and gear, and much more. Like what, you ask? We never really mentioned it before, but did you know that Alienation is geared for replayability, offering randomized enemy spawns including stronger alien “bosses,†challenges sprinkled all over the levels, post-campaign procedurally generated levels, alien hideouts to explore, and different “World States†(our own version of New Game+) unlocking new things to do? All this makes the game fresh each time you pick it up, because you can’t just learn enemy patterns, events, and maps by heart; on the contrary, you’ll have to figure out how to face different configurations of obstacles with every playthrough. It doesn’t end there either, as in typical Housemarque fashion, you’ll compete against others for country XP, Invasion ranking, and best completion times. Expect great things in the months to come, as we plan to support the game steadily. And yes, we heard you loud and clear: local co-op is our number one priority based on popular demand. Go to the PlayStation Store today and show the Xenos they’ve come to the wrong planet! Launch Party is our annual celebration of fine digital games (you may remember it by its former name, Spring Fever). Pre-order any (or all) of these games to save 10%. Enjoy! View the full article

Welcome to Italy, 47. The second episode of Hitman sees Agent 47 travel to the beautiful, sun-drenched coastal town of Sapienza, Italy. This episode adds a new story mission, new challenges, new weapons and gear, the Italian suit, and — of course — new targets, opportunities, and disguises. With a whole town to explore, Sapienza really gives you the feeling of needing to plan your hit. There are locals getting ready for work, others relaxing on the beach or fishing in the harbor, and doing some shopping. Many more are visiting the San Giorgio church or watching street entertainers. Sapienza has its own idyllic rhythm and 47’s ultimate task is to complete his objectives without anyone knowing about it. Subtlety is the mark of the true professional. Those objectives are simple: eliminate Silvio Caruso and Francesca De Santis and destroy their scientific research. If you want to know more, Diana has been trusted with the specifics, as always. New Contracts Every WeekHitman Live Content will also continue with Episode Two. We’ve added new content to the game every week since we released the first episode on March 11, and that continues with Episode Two. You’ll be able to create your own contracts and play Featured Contracts that were created in Sapienza as well as play our popular Escalation Contracts. Within the next few weeks, the first Elusive Target will also be available, although we’re not promising that they’ll turn up in Sapienza. We’ll let you know, so keep your eyes and ears open. Alongside Sapienza comes a sizeable game update that adds a host of improvements to the game for all players. Significantly improved loading times, new options for the HUD and Challenges, menu tweaks and updates — plus a whole lot more. Take a look at the full release notes for all the details. The Sarajevo SixThe second target from The Sarajevo Six is also available with the launch of Episode Two. Gary Lunn, also known as “The Enforcer,†has been located in Sapienza, where he is currently working at the Ether corporate bio lab where he is supervising high-level security efforts. Lunn is a highly trained professional and can most likely be found moving around Villa Caruso or the bio lab. PS4 players have exclusive access to these six bonus contracts that tell a self-contained side-story revolving around former members of a paramilitary unit called CICADA. A new target will be available with each new location, so we’ll have details on the third target when Episode Three takes us to Marrakesh. Anyone who owns the Full Experience will already be able to see Sapienza listed as a new destination in-game. If you own the Intro Pack, you’ll need to purchase Episode Two separately or buy the Upgrade Pack to also get all future episodes. View the full article

Prepare to leave your world behind because Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky is coming to PS4 and PS Vita on October 18! Looking to escape the mundane tedium of your everyday grind? Feel like life is lacking in the fantastical, god-slaying, dungeon-exploring department? Fellow RPG fans and professional reality-escapists, rejoice! tri-Ace, architects of the JRPG series Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, celebrate 20 years of RPG mastery with Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky. Exist Archive isn’t your standard RPG fare. You die right off the bat in a massive explosion. Boom! Gone. The end. Or is it? While you certainly aren’t explosion proof, your journey is certainly not over before it started. Instead, you awake in a surreal realm, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Are you dead? Are you alive? Are you now an immortal being that wields the power of an evil god? The short answers are “Yes,†“No,†and “Yes.†The explosion that ended your everyday life was triggered by the soul of an evil god named Yamatoga. You and 11 other people (who are also no longer living) are now immortal vessels for the soul of Yamatoga. As is to be expected when one becomes newly imbued with evil god powers, you and your comrades find yourselves mixed up in an ancient conflict involving a gaggle of gods and massive stakes. Exist Archive features a robust story as well as loads of side quests that fans of the JRPG genre have no doubt come to expect. tri-Ace continues the tradition of side-view dungeons a la Valkyrie Profile. Combat consists of a strategic combo system where each character’s attack corresponds to a button, and executing bigger combos dishes significant punishment to any foes unfortunate to stand in your way. Mixing attacks and changing party formation alters your skill development as well. Get ready to go out with a bang, RPG fans! Brandish godlike powers in intense combo based battles with unspeakable horrors and vicious bosses all while strategically developing skills. Traverse sprawling 2D dungeons as you scour the realm for loot, monsters, and answers to your mysterious surroundings. Exclusive to PS4 and PS Vita, Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky looks to transport players to surreal landscapes and diabolic dungeons this Fall! View the full article

Hey, PlayStation Nation! We’ve been working on a special retail edition of our new MOBA, Paragon — called the Paragon Essentials Edition. The Essentials Edition includes everything you need to start killing me on the battlefields of Agora, including a launch-exclusive Wasteland Twinblast skin. We put together the Essentials Edition so that even if you’ve already bought a Founder’s Pack, you’ll still find the Essentials Edition an awesome deal when it hits stores on June 7. The Paragon Essentials Edition includes: 6,000 Paragon Coins (worth $60). In-game currency to spend on additional Master Challenges, skins, boosts, and other items that I’ll see as you stand over my corpse. Five Hero Master Challenges. Each Master Challenge immediately grants a Challenger skin and permanent XP boost, plus unlocks unique rewards as you play, including a taunt (that you’ll use on me) and the Master skin. Includes Master Challenges for Twinblast, Sevarog, Iggy & Scorch, and two soon-to-be-announced Heroes. Five Skins, including the launch-exclusive Wasteland Twinblast skin. For now, you can only get the Wasteland Twinblast skin in the Essentials Edition. Five Rep Boosts (each lasts for three wins). Rep boosts speed up how quickly you earn Rep, which you can spend on card packs, Master Challenges, and more. If you play a lot of Paragon, the 6,000 Paragon Coins is worth it by itself. The whole Essentials Edition is more than $160 in value (based on in-game currency) for only $59.99. For those of you who pre-order the Essentials Edition, you’ll get an extra 1,000 Paragon Coins upon pickup, which you can use to buy more Master Challenges, skins, and boosts. You can pre-order the Essentials Edition at GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, Target, and Walmart right now. I’ll see you on the battlefield. At least until I miss my ult and have to sit out for 60 seconds. Good luck, have fun. View the full article

Just think: in a mere two weeks’ time, we’ll all be playing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Naughty Dog has described Nathan Drake’s next adventure as his last — I sure hope it’s not! But just in case it is, let’s take one more look at what’s in store with the final trailer. I adore Naughty Dog. Ever since they transformed game storytelling with The Last of Us, I believe they are the most vital game studio operating in the world today. What’s their secret? Look past the virtuoso art direction, put aside the spectacular action set pieces, and you’ll find characters driven by motivations we can all understand: loyalty, greed, sacrifice, revenge. The secret sounds so simple, so elementary. But folks — making these vulnerable characters live and breathe so convincingly amidst a mammoth, white-knuckle epic is an extraordinary accomplishment. With The Last of Us, I argued that Naughty Dog had created the game of the generation. With Uncharted 4, let’s see where they go next. View the full article

Ladies and gentlemen, 50 fighters are ready to meet in The King of Fighters XIV, coming August 23 on PS4! While preserving the classic 2D gameplay and three-on-three team battles that made the King of Fighters series popular, The King of Fighters XIV brings a fresh change to the series with full 3D visuals. It also includes a wide variety of multiplayer and online features for the best King of Fighters experience yet! The King of Fighters XIV marks the first chapter in a brand new saga, so you’d better come prepared. Here’s a little backstory… KOF has become a major business, generating huge profits and numerous spin-off tournaments worldwide. However, this led to a lowering of the overall quality, and voices began to rise across the globe demanding the formation of one unique, worldwide KOF competition. One day, a billionaire claiming to be the “first champion†bought out all of the rights for the KOF Tournament. His name: Antonov. The announcement of a new KOF Tournament by the self-proclaimed champion created unprecedented enthusiasm around the world. From there, this excitement reached many of the classic participants of the legendary tournament directly in the form of an official invitation… Here’s a quick look at what else is in store for players in The King of Fighters XIV: 50 Fighters — King of Fighters returns with a gorgeous roster of 50 characters. Besides the returning fan favorites, numerous new combatants join the roster. Nakoruru, one of the heroines from the Samurai Shodown series, joins the fight along with her fellow hawk companion Mamahaha! Shun’ei is a new character who will play an important role in the game’s story. Plus, numerous emblematic and original characters prepare to duke it out in the KOF tournament! 3-on-3 Team Battle The series’ traditional three-on-three Team Battle system is back in The King of Fighters XIV, so that 50 character roster is gonna come in very handy when picking out your best team. Climax Cancel The trademark mechanic that defines the KOF Series has deeply evolved. In The King of Fighters XIV it allows the player to strike Super Special Moves up to three times, leading to the ultimate sequential combo and devastating damage! New Max Mode The KOF Series’ Max Mode returns with significant improvements! Activation of Max Mode gives you access to EX Special Moves for new combos. Rush The newly introduced Rush feature allows players to perform combos by mashing the Square button. Game Modes The King of Fighters XIV features a large variety of game modes such as a Story Mode, a VS Mode, and a Gallery Mode for the best KOF experience. Party Battle Have a group of friends online? Compete in a three-on-three Team Battles via online between teams of players! Online Training Newcomers and veterans alike can learn how to become stronger with master players via the Online Training feature! Find a senpai who will tutor you to greatness! Online Communication The King of Fighters XIV will make full use of the PS4 online functionality in order to widen players’ communication and communities. But on to the best part… For the Americas, we’ll have a special Pre-order/Day One edition! First, physical copies of the game are going to arrive in a collectible SteelBook case, with series mainstay Kyo on the cover! But we’re not stopping there (Maybe you’re not understanding the tagline “Burn to Fight!â€) because Atlus U.S.A. is also making the Classic Kyo DLC costume free for the week following launch as a download on PlayStation Store! Hi everyone! Rock Band 4 is getting a major feature added to the game this year, and it’ll allow you to literally rock the world. That’s right, synchronous online multiplayer is coming to Rock Band 4 later this year! Harmonix has been talking about bringing online multiplayer to Rock Band 4 well before the game shipped. We consider Rock Band 4 to be not just a game, but the iconic band platform for this generation of gaming consoles. We’re dedicated to bringing players only the best in music rhythm gaming, and having the ability to play with your friends anytime, anywhere is just another step in this process. We’ve heard our community loud and clear — as one of our most commonly requested features, it’s time to bring online multiplayer to Rock Band 4. Synchronous online multiplayer will be like Quickplay, modified to provide a fair and streamlined experience for console friends looking to play Rock Band 4 together online. We’ll be implementing enhancements on the back end to address issues for folks who don’t have the same DLC libraries and want a more fluid process for choosing songs together as a band (you all know that one person who would pick a song before you had the chance). Stay tuned for more details at E3! Now, we’ve been talking a lot about this fall expansion pack, and want to give you just a bit more information about it. While more info is coming at E3, and we can’t give it all away quite yet, we can say that synchronous online multiplayer isn’t even the major focus or feature we have in store! We’ve got brand new features heading to Rock Band 4 that have never been in any previous Rock Band title, ever. Don’t miss out on all of the news coming soon! View the full article

Get your brain’s frontal cortex ready for some serious twisting, because The Sun and Moon is warping its way onto PS4 and PS Vita April 26! The gameplay concerns a hero who’s little more than a cute blob of darkness — however he has the ability to phase through the floor and walls of the minimalistic environment he must navigate. While inside a solid object gravity is reversed but momentum maintained, so this inertia can be used to accelerate the ball into larger jumps or dive to deeper depths. The action is a blend of rhythmic platforming, physics manipulation, and pure puzzling — the elegantly simple core idea is explored across 150 levels (averaging at 12 hours for full completion if you’ve got the right stuff). The game’s inception came as part of the 29th Ludum Dare 48-hour game jam, where — for various reasons — the creator Daniel Linssen only actually had a single day to come up with an idea and then build a game based upon the theme of “Beneath the Surface.†The Sun and Moon was the result, and despite its swift birthing process it went on to win the Overall prize out of 2,497 entries (along with a 1st place in Theme, 2nd in Fun, and 3rd in Innovation). This prompted Daniel to build a more expansive version for full release, which was extremely well received by both the players that tackled it and the specialist gaming press alike. Austin, Texas, publisher Digerati specializes in this exact kind of original and high-quality indie title, which may otherwise have slipped under the gaming public’s radar. Getting more eyeballs on these “unsung hero†games is their mission, and The Sun and Moon fits the bill perfectly. It’s due to launch on April 26 with cross-buy support for $9.99, so you can enjoy its novel gameplay, crisp and clean graphics, and infuriatingly compulsive “one more go†nature that feels just at home on a handheld or a big screen. After working on In the Shadows for more than a year, I’m happy to announce that the game will be coming to PS4 in 2017! In the Shadows is a puzzle platformer where shadow monsters lurk in the night and you need to use lights to scare them away. It’s a deeply emotional story about fighting fears, realizing the comforts of everyday life, and seeing things with a new perspective. In the Shadows tells the story of a man who daydreams of a forgotten, imaginary world from his youth. His adult life has stalled and he escapes to this world to piece together events from his past. Something has been lost and there is a void that needs to be filled. With each memory he relives, the man finds more clues. The puzzles are carefully crafted so that the game progresses at a comfortable pace while providing quite the challenge later on. All of the puzzles are based around different objects that come to life in the night as shadow monsters. Each of these monsters serves a purpose; for each obstacle there is a solution. You can scare away a monster to transform it into a tool that will grant you a new ability with a unique mechanic, but you need to be careful as the tool will transform back into crawling monster when the lights are off! The puzzles increase in complexity as you progress in the game — finding all the stars and uncovering secrets will make the task even more difficult. You will need to plan carefully how to move objects around and sometimes timing can be essential. I have been working hard on the look for the game to match the general theme of shadow and light, creating a visual twist that has not been seen before while still having a familiar look. Each environment is made out of voxels and crafted to give depth to the world you discover. This 3D environment lets me design all the lighting and shadows in real time which create beautifully lit, dynamic environments. If you are in Boston this weekend, I will be at PAX East at the PAX Rising booth April 22 through April 24 with a playable demo. Come say hello and try the game! View the full article

If you’re headed to PAX East this weekend, you are in for a treat! Uncharted 4 Multiplayer will be playable in the PlayStation booth all weekend, and you’ll be the first to try out an unrevealed game mode — Plunder. If you haven’t played it in Uncharted 2 or Uncharted 3 — for shame. Plunder is a Capture the Flag type game mode but with an Uncharted twist — you can throw the idol (AKA flag)! Great teamwork is key to winning the match as you’re tasked with finding the idol on the map and bringing it to your home treasure chest. Plunder will be playable on the three maps you’ve seen in the Uncharted 4 Beta and Multiplayer Stress Test — Island, Madagascar City, and Rooftops. For those familiar with the classic Plunder game type, we’ve made a few updates. In previous Uncharted games, people carrying the idol could not traverse with it; we removed this constraint. Also, Plunder has been a five-on-five experience in the past; we changed that to four vs. four. No doubt this may cause shortness of breath for fans of the mode, but worry not! Given the number of mechanics that have been introduced into our multiplayer’s moment-to-moment gameplay, Plunder at four vs. four is perfect and we hope fans that experience this mode at PAX East feel the same. We still have so much to share with our fans that have been waiting a long time to hear more about multiplayer. The reveal of Plunder is just another piece. Let me assure you, what we will be revealing soon after PAX East will please a lot of people. We’ll have a few people from Naughty Dog at the booth all weekend — so come by, try out Plunder, and chat with us. We’d love to meet our fans! See you at PAX East! View the full article

It’s only been a month since the release of ARK: Survival of the Fittest as a stand-alone game on PC, and already thousands and thousands of people are playing it. Complete with cash prizes, invitational tournaments, and of course, dinosaurs as far as the eye can see, Survival of the Fittest was built from the ground up to be full of competitive action. And we’re bringing it all to PS4 players on July 19! Spawning almost naked with a group of hostile opponents, it’s do-or-die in what we’re calling a Multiplayer Online Survival Arena (The big hats keep telling me to push the acronym until it becomes a thing), where you use your wits, your cunning, a little bit of brute force, a hatchet, an anvil, some arrows, a triceratops, a few guns, an explosive or two, a couple of stegosaurus, a sniper rifle, and — in dire cases — your own poop to be the last tribe standing when the final curtain is drawn. Tame dinosaurs, craft armor, forge weapons, harvest resources, build bases, make friends, and slaughter some “Bobs†(ARK’s term for newcomers), in what is one of the deepest combat arenas to ever hit PlayStation. The breadth and depth of strategy, and potential avenues for victory, are enormous, and we’re working insanely hard to make sure that no matter what approach you take, you can come out on top if you’re clever. The PS4 has actually given us an interesting opportunity to bring a different kind of ARK — and a unique type of game — to the platform. Nobody has yet brought a Multiplayer Online Survival Arena (MOSA) to PlayStation, and we thought it was kind of a shame that the space was being neglected. One of the fantastic things about multiplayer console gaming is the huge pool of players all playing on the same hardware, which make things like matchmaking and competitive gameplay far more fun. This allows us to make a lot of optimizations for these players not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of gameplay; there’s no question of whether a user will be playing on lower settings for better frames per second or to remove some essential gameplay element. In addition to the fact that it’s untackled ground, we’re really looking forward to some of the unique elements of console gameplay: splitscreen, local LAN play, and we’re even looking at introducing bots which you can play against offline to challenge yourself, or to practice, or maybe just to see the world that ARK takes place in. Whichever way you want to approach the game, online or offline, with friends, or against bitter rivals, it should all lead up to one thing: The Survivor League. That’s right, we’re bringing the Survivor League to PS4 as well, and that means cash prizes for the best of the best every single month. In addition to these prizes, you’ll also qualify yourself for our invitationals, and for future events that we are planning. We want players to be able to get some return on the investment that they make by playing our game every day. The Survivor League will track the top players in every available game mode and automatically display their rankings on our official site, so the world can see that you are in fact the cream of the crop. We look forward to seeing you in the arena on PS4 starting on July 19 — may the best tribe survive! View the full article

Hi everyone, I’m so grateful to have the chance to write this blog post, as I get to talk about a subject close to my heart — gameplay! I recently got a chance to sit down with James Hawkins, XDev executive producer at Sony, and record us playing a bit of the game as we discuss some of the gameplay design. Our game has quite a few different facets to the experience, from platforming and puzzles to the intricacies of combat. We want players to have a varied challenge — after all, learning and mastering the skills to beat the game are a large part of the fun. Of course, we appreciate that some players want to enjoy the world and would prefer to be able to take a slightly more laid-back approach, so we’ve added a beginner option to make that possible too — but to see anything beyond the most basic ending you’ll have to really sink your teeth into the game! One key area as you progress through the game is the Wisdom of Shadows that allows you to buy upgrades, new special moves, and talismans that can be equipped to enable new strategies. To access these items you’ll need to hunt down secrets hidden throughout the levels to unlock them, and then purchase them with Mana gained through demonstrating your skills in the game — primarily by scoring well in combat! The heart of combat is simple: enemies come in from the left or right and you have to defeat them. Most of your attacks will destroy them with one hit. It’s straightforward to understand but the depth in the formula quickly becomes apparent as different enemies respond differently to your various attacks, and have different methods and timing of their own attacks — not to mention getting faster as they approach. As you go deeper into the levels you’ll have to start watching enemies very closely to defeat them unscathed, and once multiple types of enemies are mixed together you’ll really have to stay on your toes! Keep in mind that your moves take time to execute, so once enemies start getting a little faster you’ll have to think about the enemy coming at you from behind while you’re executing your move on the enemy in front. Once things get even more hectic you’ll need to start planning for the enemies behind the enemies you’re attacking! Luckily you have a huge range of options available to you: basic attacks, counters, stun, throws, special attacks, evades, dodge rolls, the Wrath of Aarbron, Rage Chains, and — most importantly –the oft-overlooked but oh-so-important block button! When you master them, many of these moves have “perfect windows†in their timing as well that can grab you extra points. The combo multiplier in particular is critical — it is applied to every kill so if you can get a really big multiplier then this can reward you with massive scores. But be super-careful — taking damage (or using a Rage Chain) will reset your combo multiplier back to one. Scoring big starts with not getting hit, and for that reason the most fundamental skill is learning to block effectively. It’s so nice to talk about the game design! I hope it will prove helpful for players who decide to pick up Shadow of the Beast, and particularly anyone who decides to unlock all the different endings and aim for Platinum ranks in all the fights on Beast mode! Please be sure to pre-order your copy of Shadow of the Beast today in order to secure your limited edition dynamic Theme featuring a brand new original creature designed by acclaimed artist Roger Dean! Roger was the creator of the cover art for the original Shadow of the Beast game and its sequel, so it’s a massive honor to have him revisit the universe with our game. Thanks again for your interest — it is genuinely appreciated. View the full article

Hello, PlayStation fans! We’re pleased to announce that our psychological horror game Neverending Nightmares will hit PlayStation store for PS4 and PS Vita (with cross buy support) on May 3 for $14.99. To reward the most loyal PlayStation gamers, we’re offering a 20% off discount to PlayStation Plus members for the first two weeks after launch. Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game that draws on my struggles and experiences of dealing with obsessive compulsive disorder and depression. Through eliciting feelings of darkness and despair and drawing on strong metaphorical undertones, I’m seeking to express my feelings of struggling with mental illness through the game. You play as Thomas, who wakes up from a terrible, violent nightmare only to discover that he is still in an inception-style nightmare. Throughout the game Thomas has to continue to explore horrifying nightmares filled with his darkest demons and fears only to finally wake up in reality. While the story isn’t autobiographical, the feelings in the game very much are. Everything in the game was designed to recreate the feelings and thoughts I experienced at my darkest point in my mental health struggles. We are expressing this through all elements of the game including the game’s story, the environments, art style, and soundscapes. The stylized impressionistic black and white art style influenced by Edward Gorey creates a bleak, dark, dramatic atmosphere and emphasizes the feelings of hopelessness. We used animated pen shading lines constantly animating towards you, designed to make you feel as if the world is closing in — a feeling often associated with mental illness. The haunting dark ambient score amplifies the tension as you explore progressively worse nightmare-scapes as the game progresses. In the game, Thomas is completely defenseless and unable to find a solution or a way out. He has asthma, so when trying to evade the hellish apparitions, he can’t flee for very long without having to catch his breath, giving the monsters time to catch up. In most games, there’s a huge emphasis on feeling empowered or defeating something, but when I was dealing with the worst of my mental illness, I felt completely powerless, which is something we seek to convey and explore in the game. When you reach the end of the game, you “wake up†into reality. Featuring a branching narrative, there are three completely different realities you can wake up into that redefine the character relationships and the meanings of the nightmares you have throughout the game. The endings are contradictory and are designed to still feel like an extension of the dreamlike state where the entire game takes place. People often ask me which is the “good†ending. I would argue that none are. Neverending Nightmares doesn’t have an emphasis on winning or losing. This is not a game you can win, just like you can’t “beat†mental illness. It’s an ongoing struggle, and I wanted the game to represent that. Unlike horror games designed to create fear through jump scares, Neverending Nightmares is meant to have a creepy unnerving atmosphere and disturbing events that get under your skin and haunt you long after you finish the game. Part of the reason that I was able to make it so disturbing was that because of OCD, I struggle with intrusive thoughts of violent self-harm. They are horrible images that are sick, wrong, and incredibly hard to shake. I worked with the team to translate these images into the game, and they are absolutely horrifying nightmare fuel. One of our goals in making the game was to connect with others suffering from mental illness and help them realize that they’re not alone. The feeling of mental illness is often one of isolation and fear. We wanted to create a game to resonate with people who also suffer and give them an outlet for self-expression as well. Neverending Nightmares is an extremely personal and uncompromising game. It definitely isn’t the type of game that you’d see a big company making, but even when I first started working on it, the people at PlayStation rallied behind the idea and worked to bring it to PS4 and PS Vita. I’m so happy that it will finally be released on May 3, so you can play it and share in these experiences with me. I have to thank everyone at Sony Interactive Entertainment who helped me bring my nightmares to you. View the full article

Hi! I’m Michael from House House — I wrote about our game Push Me Pull You a few months ago in an earlier post. It’s a nice/horrible local multiplayer game where you and a friend share control of a big, wriggly body, and then play sports together. I’m very happy to announce that it’s finally ready to launch for PS4 on May 3! We have a brand new trailer to celebrate, which shows off some of the more advanced techniques we hope you’ll be trying out on each other: If you’ve never heard of Push Me Pull You, here’s what you can expect: Frantic local multiplayer gameplay in the vein of Sportsfriends or Towerfall. Multiple game types that will test your friendship in different ways, as well as a sandbox area filled with toys and secrets. Controller sharing which lets you split one controller with a friend or attempt to control two heads simultaneously — a two-player game can be played with just one controller! Accessible yet deep gameplay — play it as a noisy party game or hold a fiercely competitive grudge match. We’re so grateful to everyone who has been following our development. It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve got something we’re really proud of. We can’t wait for you all to get a chance to play in a couple weeks time! In the meantime we’ll be putting all sorts of stuff on our blog and Twitter leading up to launch. Also: Jake and I are bringing Push Me Pull You to PAX East this weekend, so if you’re heading to the show, make sure you find us and challenge us to a match! (You will not win the match.)
