  1. Ever since we announced the renewal of Powers you’ve been eagerly awaiting more details on the second season of the first PlayStation original scripted series. Well, I’m proud to announce that the second season of Powers will premiere in the US and Canada on May 31st with new episodes available each week on PlayStation Store. And PlayStation Plus members can watch it all for free!* The team behind Powers has been hard at work making season two more action-packed than the last. In fact, to whet your appetite for the May 31st season premiere we’re debuting a new trailer from season two right here. With fan-favorite actors like Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars), and Wil Wheaton (The Big Bang Theory) joining the talented returning cast led by Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Susan Heyward (Vinyl), we know PlayStation fans are going to love season two of Powers. So, who killed Retro Girl? And what happens to the Powers world when its greatest superhero is murdered? Find all that out and more on May 31st when we release the first three episodes! Every week after, we will then release a new episode of the 10-episode series. In the meantime, be sure to follow the Powers Twitter and Facebook accounts and visit the official site for more trailers and behind-the-scenes videos from seasons 1 and 2. *Active membership required to access PS Plus features and benefits. Only available to PS Plus subscribers 18 years and older. View the full article
  2. Hey everyone. It seems incredible that we’re just three weeks away from the debut of two great PlayStation heroes on PS4. We’ve joked that Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is the game based on the film based on the game… and that’s actually pretty accurate! The film and game are designed as complementary pieces. They tell the same origin story of Ratchet & Clank battling Chairman Drek, with the same major beats and character arcs. The film focuses a touch more on character development and the game is a bit more focused on the action that happens between the scenes. Our goal was to take advantage of what each medium does best. But the game has a major departure from the film: the game is narrated by Captain Copernicus L. Qwark. So you get Qwark’s skewed self-serving version of events to set up a different way to experience the story. He gets all the big details right, but the little asides are all him. As you watch our new trailer for the game (And play it for yourself next month!) — you’ll have to ask yourself: can Qwark be trusted? We’re hoping that when you fire up Ratchet & Clank you’ll feel the rush you felt the first time you played a Ratchet & Clank game. But we’re going beyond that nostalgia with a gorgeous Ratchet & Clank that holds up to modern standards and is a fitting debut for the franchise on PS4. We wanted to tell the ultimate version of Ratchet & Clank’s origin story, completely synced up with the feature film. The game will be available on April 12th and the major motion picture from Gramercy Films follows shortly thereafter on April 29th. For fans of the series we also have a pretty sweet pre-order bonus. You’ll gain access to one of my favorite Ratchet & Clank weapons of all time, the Bouncer, if you pre-order the game on PlayStation Store or at a participating retailer by April 11th. We’re looking forward to seeing you in the Solana Galaxy in just a few weeks. View the full article
  3. Hey everyone! This is Alex Nichiporchik, CEO at tinyBuild. When we announced Party Hard for PS4 last month, I told you we’d be back very soon with even more PS4 announcements. It’s time for me to act on that promise. When tinyBuild began in 2011, it was the success of our first game No Time to Explain that allowed us to expand and become an indie publisher, helping other developers to bring their games to the masses. Now I’m finally going to fulfill my dream of seeing No Time to Explain on PlayStation. And it’s coming March 29th! I am you from the future, there’s no time to explain!Picture the scene: you’re minding your own business and dancing a merry jig when all of a sudden the walls of your living room explode, your future self bounds into view, and he (You?) tells you (Yourself?) that you need to come with him. There’s no time to explain! Then he’s plucked from the ground by a giant crab claw, and dragged kicking and screaming into oblivion. Fortunately your future self drops a strange future cannon/jetpack device on the floor, which you can use to chase him down and attempt to save his life. Or your life. Wait, if he dies, do you still exist? Will any of this have happened anymore? Okay, this is getting a little confusing. Let’s back up a moment. Coming to terms with the Future Cannon. No Time to Explain is a 2D platformer with a twist: your weapon is also your means of movement. You can fire the cannon at giant enemies to kill them, but you can also fire it at the floor to boost yourself into the air. This allows you to leap high walls, dodge around deadly obstacles, and generally try to stay alive. You won’t stay alive though. You will die over and over again. Trust me. No Time to Explain is an extremely silly game, and the further you get into the game, the more ridiculous it becomes. Sometimes your weapon will change, or your hero will morph, or the world around you will make no sense, or maybe you’ll just get really fat and eat a bunch of cake? All bets are off, quite frankly. Along the way there are secrets to find in the most challenging places. When I say “secrets†I obviously mean “hats.†Wanna play through the game as a fox? A dinosaur? A pirate? Why not balance a hotdog on your head? Why not just take all the hats you’ve unlocked and balance them all on top of each other? I know you love hats, don’t lie to me PlayStation.Blog readers. Oh, and get this: you can play through the entire game with up to four players. It’s incredibly chaotic, and may cause you to throw your friends through a window head-first, but they probably weren’t great friends anyway so who cares, right? So, to reiterate: No Time to Explain is a game about killing giant alien crabs, eating cake, fighting sharks with frickin laser beams on their heads, dancing really hard, and generally trying to work out what is actually happening. Does anyone find it weird that I actually had quite a lot of time to explain this?So that’s No Time to Explain. I can’t wait to see it finally released on PlayStation very soon, and get it into your hands via a violent thrusting motion. And if you thought Party Hard and No Time to Explain weren’t crazy enough, just wait until you see all the other games we have on the way to PlayStation very soon. Expect to see me pop up again on PlayStation.Blog in the coming months! View the full article

Approximate Download Size 8.5 GB Where to Download The Battleborn Open beta will be available through PlayStation Store. You just download it straight from the store — no sign-up or code required. Available Regions The Battleborn Open Beta will be available worldwide! PS Plus PS Plus is not required to participate in the Open Beta. Feedback and Bug Reports Feedback and bug reports are an essential part of the Battleborn Open Beta. Log into the Gearbox Open Beta Forums and send us your feedback! The ContentDuring the Open Beta you’ll be able to experience the natural progression of Battleborn, including two Story Mode episodes, two Competitive Multiplayer Modes, 25 heroes (some instantly available, some will unlock as you progress), and as you play you’ll rank up on three different progression systems. Story Mode Go in solo or co-op with up to 5 players in two full Story Mode episodes: The Algorithm and Void’s Edge. The Algorithm: Take on The Algorithm mission to debug and unlock the rogue Magnus AI, ISIC. If you played in the Closed Technical Test last year, you’ll notice Geoff, the Spider King, has made a few changes to his lair. Void’s Edge: Bring a jacket, ’cause the ice planet Bliss is mighty cold. A Varelsi portal has opened and it’s up to you to fight your way through the invasion and deliver the payload. Competitive Multiplayer Modes Challenge other players to duke it out in two Competitive Multiplayer modes: Incursion and Meltdown. Incursion: (Overgrowth map) Destroy the enemy’s two Spider Sentry Drones before they get to yours. Meltdown: (Paradise map) Send waves of minions to their death and score points for every minion who throws themselves into the incinerator. The team with the most scrap metal wins! Party Up with Fellow Badasses Conscript your friends for a truly badass Open Beta experience! Party up with friends or search for random players to join them in Co-Op Story Mode episodes. Play Split-Screen in either Story Mode or Competitive Multiplayer Modes. Communicate with your teammates through in-game Voice Chat. Create private custom matches with friends to get a handle on controls and practice with new characters as you unlock them. Battleborn Heroes Battleborn has a large starting roster of 25 playable heroes, which will continue growing with five additional, free heroes after launch. In the Open Beta you’ll start with 7 unlocked heroes and the rest will be unlocked as you rank up and complete objectives. In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown of the main character types: Attackers, Defenders, and Support. Attackers: charge into the fight with a variety of offensive Battleborn heroes. Throw punches, slice ’em up, blast ’em down, or break out the big guns with Rath, Deande, Phoebe, Whiskey Foxtrot, Mellka, Thorn, Marquis, Oscar Mike, Benedict, Caldarius, El Dragón, Orendi, Shayne & Aurox, and Ghalt. Defenders: take a hit for the team (or two, or three) with the likes of Attikus, Galilea, Kelvin, Boldur, ISIC, Toby, and Montana. Support: shields, heals, and still more firepower — Miko, Reyna, Kleese, and Ambra can help the team in the fight. PlayStation Nation, remember: you’ll have Open Beta access to the adorable penguin in a mechsuit, Toby! Progression Systems Experience Battleborn’s multiple progression systems during the Open Beta. Playing either Story Mode or Competitive Multiplayer Modes will earn you XP towards temporary Helix augmentations as well as persistent Command Rank and Character Rank levels. Helix: During a single Competitive match or Story episode, each level you gain activates a new Helix augmentation opportunity — all the way to level 10. Each level has two augmentation choices and a character’s Helix resets at the beginning of a new match or episode, meaning you can tailor your character’s abilities to the situation at hand. Character Rank: Each character ranks up the more you play them up to rank 15. The Character Rank levels persist across all Modes, and unlike Helix augmentations this experience does not reset at the end of a match or mission. Increasing Character Rank unlocks Mutations, which are extra Augments that become available on the Helix Menu. The higher the Character’s Rank, the more Helix augmentations, taunts, titles, and skins you can unlock for that character. Command Rank: Command Rank persists across all Modes and all characters played. Every Competitive match (excluding bots) and Story episode grants XP towards your player Command Rank. Rising through the ranks in Open Beta will unlock characters, new Gear options, titles, and more up to Command Rank 100. What to Build On every map and in every Mode you’ll find strategically located, buildable tactical structures. These buildables can be purchased — and upgraded — using Shards found throughout each level. Here are a couple samples of what you can build over the course of any given match. Automatic Turrets: Turrets have different types of offensive armaments and will attack any foe in sight — enemy minions and Battleborn alike. Healing Station: The Healing station will regenerate health over time in an area around the station for the team who purchases it. Accelerators: Accelerators give a speed boost to friendly Battleborn and minions when passing next to them. Super Minions: Super Minions can be purchased in the team’s base and are well worth the Shards. Their ability to sustain and deal more damage than other minions adds additional firepower to your team. Other InformationIs there an NDA? Nope — it’s an Open Beta which means you can stream, record video, and play Battleborn to your badass heart’s content! Can I stream or record video of Battleborn? Hell yes! Tweet at @Battleborn and let us know you’re streaming Battleborn live! Do I need a Shift account for the Open Beta? Nope! Will there be any kind of maintenance scheduled during the Beta? No, there is no planned downtime or maintenance during the Open Beta. If something comes up and maintenance is necessary, we will let you know via the Battleborn Twitter. Will my progress carry over to the retail game? No, Open Beta progress will not carry over to the retail game. View the full article

  7. Day of the Tentacle first hit store shelves back in 1993. We’re excited that — 23 years later — Dr. Fred’s Mutant Purple Tentacle is once again poised to take on the world! We’re hopeful that our remastered version of this classic LucasArts point and click puzzle adventure game will delight fans new and old; with high resolution artwork and high quality audio complementing the celebrated dialogue and clever puzzles that made Day of the Tentacle an instant classic back in the day. To celebrate launch day we put together a little making-of featurette that follows the development of the game here at Double Fine. You’ll see the lengths we went to when making sure the remaster was recreated as faithfully as possible. Whether you are a long-time fan or you’ve never played it before, we hope you enjoy playing Day of the Tentacle Remastered! Launch Party is our annual celebration of fine digital games (you may remember it by its former name, Spring Fever). Pre-order any (or all) of these games to save 10%. Enjoy! View the full article
  8. The Guns Up! development team would like to give a shout out to our community for being super passionate and helping shape the future of the game. We’re continuing to develop new features and content, and we’d like to take this opportunity to share some of the things we’re cooking up. If you’re not familiar with Guns Up! check it out in the free section on Playstation Store. About Guns Up!Guns Up! is an action-packed tower defense/RTS mashup where you go up against other players. Build a base, defend it, and take to the road to crush your enemies with your unstoppable army. What have we been up to?Guns Up! is an ongoing project and the dev team has been going full steam since launch. We’re working on improving and expanding the game while paying close attention to what the community wants. Since launch we’ve added new Heroes and regular Units to the game as well as new Perks and Command cards. We also expanded the Building levels and reduced the amount of resources needed for each upgrade. Daily Rations (login rewards) was another community request that was just added. Missions and Defend waves have been a big focus due to popular demand and more of this is on the way along with some of the larger features described below. With the support of our great community, we’ve continued to optimize the network and game performance quite a bit since launch. As we move forward this will continue to be an important focus for the overall quality of the experience. Looking to the FutureAfter today’s update there is still quite a lot we plan on bringing out in the future. Here’s a little sneak peek at just a few things we look forward to releasing in the not too distant future. Replays This has been one of the most requested features by the community and something the team has been hard at work to bring to you. We’ve learned some great tactics watching players stream Guns Up! and we’re excited to see what will happen once everyone can see how their bases fare during attacks. AI Improvements Our new AI system is getting close to launch and with it your units display better target selection and specialized behaviors. We’re excited to see what strategies emerge once the community gets its hands on the new and improved AI! With this update we also hope our higher-level users see smoother performance in the heat of their gigantic battles. And much more… We are working on many more features than we can discuss here, and are looking forward to sharing more details as they near completion. Here are just a few more things: New Trophies Air Support Command Cards New Traps Veteran Units Base Reset Alliances Vehicles If you’re not already part of the community, please join the forums and let us know where you think we should go next! 9. The future is looking bright for PlayStation VR, PS4’s upcoming virtual reality platform launching this October. The PlayStation.Blog team recently had an opportunity to play a host of new demos, each showcasing impressive variety and ingenuity. Here are our thoughts so far: Rez Infinite One of gaming’s most beloved audio + visual symbioses, Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s classic on-rails shooter is a perfect candidate for an updated VR incarnation. Even if you’ve played Rez a hundred times since its original release in 2001, being directly embedded into its trippy, synaesthetic world is an experience that must not be missed. This is how Rez was always meant to be played. — Justin Massongill Cool VR Detail: Being able to look behind you when a boss goes off screen to keep attacking it. Total game-changer! Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives PlayStation VR | PlayStation.com Just plain cool, and a good demonstration of how PS Move motion controllers can transform the PS VR experience. Simply put, Job Simulator tasks you with completing a series of comical office challenges by interacting with various props. Each PS Move represented an independent hand; by moving my hand and pressing the trigger, I picked up and moved a coffee mug, turned on a coffee maker, and ate a donut. All in a day’s work! The atmosphere is seriously funny, and the final game will include other jobs like chef and convenience store clerk. — Sid Shuman Cool VR detail: Job Simulator is essentially a big, fun VR toybox. I had tons of fun just poking around my cubicle, finding hidden jokes and subtle gags. SuperHyperCube One of my favorite PlayStation VR experiences thus far, SuperHyperCube is a first-person puzzle game that tasks the player with rotating a 3D shape to fit through a hole in a slowly advancing wall. Each success yields a more complex shape, and slimmer chances of success. Since the hole is in the middle of the wall, you’ll need to peek around the shape floating in front of you to see it. This subtle use of VR lets the player focus on the task at hand, while feeling no less immersive and natural than larger-scale experiences. This isn’t just a great VR title, it’s one of the best puzzle games I’ve played in years. — Justin Massongill Cool VR Detail: If you want to access the Options menu, just turn to your left and you’re there. Cool! Battlezone Tron on tank treads! This tank shooter provides a glimpse into the future of the VR shooter genre, playing more like a traditional shooter than any of the other VR demos I played. Loosely inspired by the 80s arcade and Atari classic, Battlezone plops you in the cockpit of a high-tech tank and sets you loose on a play field teeming with enemies. The game notably takes great advantage of VR’s verticality. I craned my head back to target high-flying aircraft with minigun fire, then glanced down at my virtual dashboard to spot enemy tank locations. The shooting mechanics felt tight and satisfying, too. — Sid Shuman Cool VR detail: Calling out two for this one! First, looking to the left and seeing your tank’s cannon move up and down as you aim with the right stick on your DualShock 4. Also, sitting in an honest-to-goodness tank cockpit, complete with panels upon panels of flashy lights, knobs, and buttons. Thumper On paper, Thumper sounds like the kind of game that would be way too intense to play in virtual reality, but thanks to its track-based gameplay and constant focal point (the shiny space beetle you control) it’s actually one of the most comfortable VR experiences I’ve had. After trying Thumper on PlayStation VR, there’s no question that that’s how I’m going to play through it this October. — Justin Massongill Cool VR Detail: Leaning forward to lower your vantage point and get right behind that chrome beetle — everything feels faster when you’re right on top of the track! Golem This one’s exciting because a) it’s unapologetically ambitious and it’s being designed by veteran developers including Jaime Griesemer and Marty O’Donnell. In this PlayStation VR exclusive, players are cast as a bedridden character who can control towering, sword-wielding creatures. The game’s full scope is still shrouded in mystery, but I did face off against another golem. As my foe swung his enormous sword, I adjusted my PS Move to parry its incoming attacks. This one could be very, very cool. — Sid Shuman Cool VR detail: To move your character, you simply lean forward, back, or to the side — and it works really well. These kinds of gameplay advancements will prove vital to the growing VR movement as developers and players adapt to the medium’s wider palette. Headmaster Placed into a mysterious “Football Improvement Center†(read: a dark, unsettling soccer field), players are made to hit balls into a goal using only head movements, tracked via PlayStation VR’s high-precision sensors. It takes a little getting used to, but before long you’ll be heading oncoming soccer balls into strategically placed bonus switches around the goal and field. Throughout the demo, things get progressively tougher… and progressively stranger. Let’s just say a piñata is involved. — Justin Massongill Cool VR Detail: Looking up at the lone spotlight on the field and watching the light flare across my field of vision. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood This one came out of left field: an on-rails shooter based on PS4’s surprise hit Until Dawn. Featuring appearances from Until Dawn’s masked murderer and other unfriendly guests, plus nods to light-gun shooters of yore like shootable ammo crates that yield upgraded firepower, Rush of Blood plays like a midway attraction designed by John Carpenter. I got a strong House of the Dead / Time Crisis vibe, right down to shooting off-screen or flicking your wrist to reload your weapon. Rush of Blood carves out its own identity though and, get this, has me pining for a revival of the light gun shooter genre. I’ll take it! — Justin Massongill Cool VR Detail: An on-rails shooter where you can actually look around! I spotted lots of little secrets while playing Rush of Blood, just by looking for them. Wayward Sky Wayward Sky proves that not everything in virtual reality needs to be first-person. Using a wonderful laser-guided point-and-click mechanic, players guide the story’s main protagonist indirectly but with impressive precision. Upon reaching one of Wayward Sky’s frequently placed puzzles, it switches to a first-person viewpoint so you can reach out and solve it using your PlayStation Move motion controllers. Keep an eye on this one. Cool VR Detail: Being placed directly into the game’s cutscenes — it’s like standing on stage during a play instead of sitting in the audience. View the full article
  10. Calling all dance commanders across the spacetime continuum! My name is Alexander Birke and I run the indie studio Out Of Bounds. Together with my publisher Excalibur Games I have been looking forward to announcing the groovy, procedural, twin-stick, laser-dodging, bullet hellish, disco-infused hodgepodge that I call Laser Disco Defenders. On a stage, in a galaxy far far away…The Intergalactic music contest is in full swing to decide who will win the mighty Mirror Moon. Whoever holds it can project their music across the galaxy and affect billions so a lot is at stake. Unfortunately the evil Lord Monotone has stolen it and is using it to wreak havoc on countless unsuspecting civilizations across the cosmos. Your task is to help the Disco Defenders fight their way to Monotone and get the Mirror Moon out of his cold, steel hands. The game is inspired by the science fiction and music of the late 70s. After the success of Star Wars a supernova of cheap, hilarious knock offs came out and even disco music — the pulse of the decade — started to use space themes and sound effects. Dodge lasers, stay alive!Every shot fired bounces around the level indefinitely and also hurts you. To start with this is easy but as you progress it quickly becomes a challenge to avoid your own shots when dodging your way towards the portal to the next level. Murder on the procedural dancefloor. Not knowing what the next level will look and play like is a great way to keep a gaming experience fresh and that’s why I have chosen this approach for Laser Disco Defenders. The game will feature both an endless score based mode and a story mode where you have to survive a certain amount of caves before you can take back the Mirror Moon from Lord Monotone. Dude, nice rags!Disco is all about bringing the most outrageous outfit to the dance floor. Choose what accessory, outfit, and shoes to wear into the game. Each item changes how you play and even looks different for each character. I hope you are as excited for this game as I was making it. I have wanted to make my own games for a long time and having one of them now coming out on PS Vita is something I’m looking very much forward to. Hit me up on Twitter and visit the dev blog if you want to follow me on this groovy journey. And if you have an idea for a cool outfit or have any questions let me know in the comments. 12. In many ways gaming is a magical medium. The interactive elements of games make them unique in the world of entertainment. Games are always a two way street — a conversation between the talented people that created the game and the passionate people who are playing it. Here at PlayStation we have seen that gaming magic play out between Game Makers and Game Players for more than twenty years, but all too often that dialogue ends when gamers reach the end credits of their favorite games. But what if that wasn’t the end? What if those incredibly talented game creators got the chance to meet their most dedicated fans to keep the conversation going? This is the core idea behind a series of short films we are producing this year: can that gaming magic happen in real life and in person? PlayStation is inherently a brand filled with great storytellers with narratives that inspire us all. To that end, I am very proud today to show you the first film in this new series: Makers & Gamers: Journey. Makers & Gamers: Journey was directed by Jesse Moss, the acclaimed documentary filmmaker behind The Overnighters, Full Battle Rattle, and many more. This inspirational journey is an emotional story that shows the true power of PlayStation narratives. Are there any stories about amazing game players or game makers that you would like to see told? Did you enjoy our first film? Would you like to see more documentary style videos from PlayStation in the future? Let us know in the comments below! View the full article

  16. Hi Playstation Nation! Today is the start of Paragon Early Access — we hope you join us on the battlefields of Agora. Everyone on the Paragon team is looking forward to watching the game grow with our players. As we’ve written before, Early Access is new to us. It’s a real commitment to listen and refine the core game of Paragon alongside early players. Sure, you’ll notice rough edges, but we’re building and improving at a rapid pace. Join us and you’ll be able to play new Heroes, earn new cards, and more every few weeks. While Paragon is designed to be completely free-to-play in Open Beta this summer, our Founder’s Packs let you get in early. You can play in Early Access today by purchasing a Founder’s Pack from PlayStation Store and join us on our journey. Our first new hero, Sevarog, ships in a couple of weeks with Iggy and Scorch to follow. These Heroes, like all our Heroes, will always be free to play. More active cards (think in-game items) are in the pipeline as well. And never forget: all cards in Paragon are only earned through gameplay. Whenever you choose to join us in Paragon, we hope you’ll follow along on PlayStation.Blog as we reveal new Heroes, cards, and more surprises. Founder’s Packs are available on PlayStation Store starting at $19.99. We’ve designed them to deliver an exceptional value on in-game content as well as letting you play early. Progress earned in Early Access is real and permanent, so get in and level up. The Founder’s Packs start with access, then layer on more and more Master Challenges and boosts. Each Hero has his own Master Challenge that is designed to give you extra rewards for playing that Hero. These include exclusive skins and emotes that can only be earned through Master Challenges. They also include a permanent XP boost for that Hero. The higher-level Founder’s Packs also contain a unique skin and an extra Founder’s Pack you can give to a friend. Paragon will also be available in stores on June 7th. The Essentials Edition is designed to deliver a phenomenal value as well, and includes a unique Twinblast skin. Please join us now in the Early Access Season or later this Summer in free Open Beta! Good luck, have fun! View the full article

  18. Is it possible to give gamers that magical, musical feeling of being “in a groove?†How do we sync graphics and sound so they combine into something more powerful than the sum of their parts? Most importantly, can we do all of this and still make something that is fun to play? 15 years ago when I set out to create the original Rez with my team at United Game Artists, we challenged ourselves to answer these difficult questions. Luckily we had a few key inspirations to help us find answers. Core InfluencesOne was my first real experience with good techno music at the 1997 Street Parade music festival in Zurich. The power of simple, driving beats perfectly matching colorful lights and abstract imagery was a spectacle unlike anything I had ever experienced before. …or had I? In a strange way, it reminded me of another inspiration from a totally different medium. I had always been a huge fan of the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky who tried to evoke sound through vision (tied to a concept more generally known as “Synesthesiaâ€). He meticulously placed shapes and colors in a way intended to create an impact beyond their visual qualities — to resonate with the other senses. And the soul. The last key inspiration were the arcade-style shooters of my youth. Xevious made the lasting impression that this genre could be accessible to anyone, but at the same time include deep gameplay and replayability. Years later, playing Xenon 2 on a friend’s Amiga in college was the first time I realized that a rich, evocative soundtrack could help a game transcend technical limitations and become almost like a new form of media altogether. And Now, 15 Years Later…All this reminiscing isn’t just for nostalgia’s sake (and it isn’t just about the Rez post-mortem talk I gave today at this year’s Game Developers Conference) — the developers at Monstars and Enhance Games are working hard to keep these core inspirations in mind every single day as we develop Rez Infinite for PS4 and PS VR. The same ideals we followed back then guide us now as we remaster assets to 1080p, remix the sound for 3D audio, and consider control options and other tweaks now that the game will also be (optionally) fully playable in PlayStation VR. And the spirit behind the creation of the original Rez is especially important as we create the all-new, original content we teased at the end of our debut trailer: “Area X.†We aren’t ready to talk about this just yet, but hopefully the image says enough on its own. Keep in mind this is concept art and not actual screenshots; right now we’re deep in experimentation, unsure of exactly where we will end up, but thrilled at the possibilities — just as it was with the original Rez all those years ago. 19. By now you’ve probably heard the big news out of the annual Game Developers Conference — PlayStation VR launches this October for $399 U.S. dollars. We’ve spent the better part of a year talking about PlayStation VR from a largely technical perspective. But as cool as the technology is, it’s always going to be about the games. And that’s what has so many of us at PlayStation excited about the VR revolution. Because VR is going to change everything that we know about games, and even entertainment, on a fundamental level. Everywhere I go I’m surrounded by veteran developers who are dazzled by the potential offered by PlayStation VR. I’ve invited some of them to provide their own perspective here: “At Media Molecule we spend most of our effort making imaginary worlds that we want people to explore and, for a while, believe in. However there still remains a feeling that we stand on one side of the TV screen and these worlds are trapped on the other side, achingly out of reach. “PlayStation VR lets us dissolve this barrier. The worlds we make then stop being something that you witness but something you experience.†–David Smith, Dreams, Media Molecule “For me, one of the most powerful aspects of PlayStation VR is the personal emotional connection we can create with game characters. Whether they are realistic or fantasy-looking, characters can look at you in the eyes, follow your movements, and react to your proximity in believable ways. That alone is mind-blowing and a huge evolution from traditional video games.†–Nicolas Doucet, The Playroom VR, Japan Studio “PlayStation VR is so inspiring for us as creators because it allows us to bring the experience of Until Dawn: Rush of Blood into the player’s personal space. Surrounding and immersing them completely in it and amplifying the emotion and intensity, especially for horror, way beyond what is possible via a TV screen. We can remove the barriers of interaction mechanics — this allows us to dissolve away pressing buttons and moving sticks and morph them into natural and intuitive actions for the player.†–Simon Harris, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Supermassive Games “Day by day we are looking at original mechanics and concepts that force us to redefine many of our fundamental design philosophies. As gamers, PlayStation VR is providing us with new ways of both engaging and interacting with the medium and is fundamentally breaking the experiential barrier we’re conditioned to. “We’re at an amazing moment in development charting new territory. We don’t really know where the limitations are and we’re probably only just seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of opportunities.†–Piers Jackson, RIGS: Mechanized Combat, Guerrilla Cambridge Our third-party development partners are equally excited about the possibilities of VR game development and its potential to transform the DNA of gaming forever. “VR allows developers, for the first time, to empower players to become actors inside of the experience. This sense of presence — combined with unique mechanics that VR hardware like PlayStation VR allows us to create — will lead to new gaming experiences that were previously either not practical, or simply not possible. “At Red Storm we’ve focused our games on the concept of shared presence. When a group of players see each other’s real world movements reflected in real-time, they truly feel like they are playing right next to each other, even though in reality they may be half a world apart.†–David Votypka, Werewolves Within, Red Storm Studio, Ubisoft “For me, it’s that look people get after they try PlayStation VR for the first time. You can see the thrill in their eyes, still marveling at what they just saw. And on top of that there’s also this… it’s like a sense of wonder, of awe at the possibilities… It’s that look — and helping make that experience possible — that’s what inspires me as a creator.†–Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Rez Infinite, Enhance Games “Creating environments for games is about lighting, it’s about composition and leading the eye. You move this rock here and that column there until, you know… until it feels right. But in VR, you don’t have a frame, there’s no TV to frame the view. “In VR the world is all around you, you can look anywhere and it all has to look composed and beautiful… so you have to get creative. You have to go back to real world architecture and design spaces that make sense to someone walking through them.†–Vic DeLeon, Golem, Highwire Games “In a way, virtual reality is a total reset for developers. A typical, run-of-the-mill shooter set-piece — let’s say firing a tank turret while it drives off a cliff into an exploding blimp — would never work in VR. It’d be a cacophony, totally overwhelming, you wouldn’t be able to process it as anything but noise. “But in VR even walking through an empty basement can be intense… on a TV that would be nothing, but when you are there… your skin starts to crawl, and when floorboard creaks behind you, your adrenal glands kick in, your fight-or-flight response takes over… it’s scary. As a designer, you have to recalibrate your expectations.†–Jaime Griesemer, Golem, Highwire Games “At CCP our goal has always been to create the most meaningful virtual worlds. With the PlayStation VR we now have a fantastic tool to accomplish that goal in a way never before possible. When you play EVE: Valkyrie you are no longer a gamer staring at a television; you are a space fighter pilot. You are there, it is real.†–Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, EVE: Valkyrie, CCP Games Thank you for joining us on the first step on our historic journey as a company and an industry. View the full article
  20. Hello PlayStation fans, Dominic Matthews here from Ninja Theory. Today I’m very happy to be sharing with you a scene from our upcoming PS4 game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. In this scene we are revealing a new look for Senua based on our aim to make her one of the most believable characters ever seen in a video game. Senua is a Celtic Warrior who journeys into Viking heartland while struggling with trauma and psychosis. It is important for us to portray the physical, emotional, and mental trials of her quest in both the character model and the representation of her reality. An example of this is the voices that Senua hears in the scene. These voices have been recorded binaurally which means that if you listen to them with headphones on they will sound as if they are in the 3D space around you. But there’s more to this scene than meets the eye. We are showcasing a world-first: a new technology that allows our actress to perform the scene live and in real-time directly within the game world. As far as we know no one has done this with a character of such fidelity before. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is our first independently developed and self-published title. We have a small team of 16 people creating the game, but we believe that independence has given us the freedom to try to push our creative ideas and technology further than we ever have before. The creation of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice continues at full pace, with exciting developments taking place in many areas, which you can catch up on in our development diaries. You can look forward to new diaries in the coming months covering our new combat system, how we’re building out Hellblade’s world, and our continued work with representing Senua’s visions. Thanks for your support so far! View the full article
  21. There are abnormal levels of excitement in the Boneloaf office as we get closer to finishing work on Gang Beasts, the silly multiplayer party game we are making with Double Fine Presents for PS4. Gang Beasts is a silly party game that has groups of surly gelatinous characters fighting in a series of playfully hazardous locations including a flaming incinerator room, an industrial fan hall, a neglected Ferris Wheel, and suspended window cleaning gondolas. Since making the announcement that Gang Beasts will be coming to PS4, we have been working furiously with sound specialists Robert Larder and Adam “doseone†Drucker and developers from Coatsink, Ruce, and SuperGenius to fill the game with a glut of gelatinous fun! And we can now officially confirm that we are working to support online and PlayStation VR game modes for the PS4 version! We are also working on finishing the single and cooperative multiplayer game modes, the character customization system, and new content for the full game launch later this year — with PlayStation VR support and story mode content coming as free updates after the initial release. For information on the development of Gang Beasts read the FAQ and blog posts at our official site. View the full article
  22. As a young kid I was inspired by both my grandfathers and my father. They showed me the beautiful worlds of mathematics, science, physics, and technology. I remember endless conversations with them about how things work, why and how they can be used. How can we understand the world of nature and use it in engineering? I owe them all those inspirations that affected my future. I dreamt of being a scientist or an engineer, developing new technology or conducting scientific research. I learned to read very early on and as a kid I was a geek — reading everything I could get my hands on. It was lots of literature and history books, but also popular science — especially about physics and technology. I remember reading in some of those books about Silicon Valley and imagining California as a mythical, perfect land where everything important in culture, movies, and technology happens. When my father got a PC at home I grew fascinated by how this single, mysterious machine could do almost anything it was instructed to. Guided and inspired by my father, I started to use it. And when I hit the first limitations of computer software, I immediately wanted to learn programming. I never had a specific vision of what kind of programmer I wanted to be. However when I first started programming in Logo and then Turbo Pascal my first programs were simple visual scenes as well as games. For a long time I didn’t think of being a game programmer — to be honest I didn’t even realize it was a possible career choice (“What do you mean you can get paid to make games?â€). However as I kept learning more advanced programming languages like assembler, C, and C++ I kept coming back to games and my initially small projects ended up being simple games, visual effects, audio effects, sound synthesis, and later shaders. It went along with my fascination with photography, art, music, and graphics in general. I even had some adventures and attempts at doing digital 3D modelling to get some content for my game development experiments. I think one of the defining moments when I first thought “Wow, this is something I could really do†was when I was 18 years old. Straight after high school I got hired for a summer job as an IT intern. My first job was at CD Projekt when it was still “only†a game publisher. Working inside, I learned that they started a game production team called “CD Projekt RED†and were working on “The Witcher†— a game based on one of the best Polish fantasy novel series. It was an extremely ambitious project and working there seemed out of my reach. I think this drove me to learn even more about programming, and four years later after the university I applied to work there. I got accepted and was so lucky to have an opportunity to work on some of the best Polish games ever made and with the best, most inspiring people. I had dreams and ambitions of travelling, getting to know other cultures, living among people of different nationalities and learning from them. With support of my then girlfriend and now wife, I made the very difficult decision to start a new adventure and a new chapter in my life. We decided to move to Montreal and both of us started working at Ubisoft Montreal. (She is a programmer, too!) It was a two-year, amazing adventure. I learned a lot and met welcoming and extremely talented people. I matured and grew a lot, not only as a programmer, but also in life. Working in a first-party studio is a dream of many programmers and was also my dream. If you are a single-platform developer you can focus on that platform’s hardware and totally master it. You gain lots of knowledge with help from the great engineers working on hardware, SDK, and firmware. You not only get a good understanding of your platform, but also an opportunity to use its unique and powerful features and impact development of SDKs and system libraries. Working in a fixed environment with low-level access to a platform is truly empowering — you can use 99.9% of hardware capabilities and not even think about any limitations or constraints that other platforms would have. Santa Monica Studio was always for me one of those studios that guarantee absolute quality. I remember watching God of War 3 developer diaries and thinking “Wow, they are 100% serious about what they are doing — totally redefining what I thought was technically possible in games.†Then playing the game and seeing epic, unparalleled fight scenes with titans or unique puzzles mimicking Escher-style perspective in Hera’s garden… It was very inspiring and pushed game technology boundaries. I wanted to work with such creative and dedicated people. Seeing that Sony Santa Monica Studio was hiring I couldn’t miss the opportunity to fulfill many of my dreams at once: the dream of Southern California, the dream of being an engineer and working with the best, and the dream of developing a first-party game. Getting here was a rough, fast ride (Looks really crazy from the retrospective!), but now I’m here and I’m ready to do my best to help shape the future of PlayStation! Santa Monica Studio Creatives Episode 3 will debut next week. Please visit sms.playstation.com/creatives or follow @SonySantaMonica to learn more. Santa Monica Studio Creatives is a series focusing on four unique individuals of our family whose journey to our studio is as inspiring as their creative talents within. While their stories are candid, raw, and anything but normal, their expert crafts and collaboration within our creative walls hit the heart of what matters most to our studio culture — the team is everything. 23. Hi guys, Petr from Grip Digital here. GDC is in full swing and I would like to show you our brand new game, which we showed for the first time this week. Together with a young and ambitious studio from Sweden, Right Nice Games, we are announcing Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island, a single-player action platformer coming to PS4 this year. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island follows the best traditions of the third-person platformer genre. The game sets two unlikely heroes on an adventure to prevent the villainous CRT from conquering their home and turning it into a wasteland. Skylar was designed by CRT and turned into his most potent weapon — wielding a powerful mechanical arm augmentation. But now she must become a heroine against her will to defy this destiny. And Plux is the goofy sidekick that every good action platformer needs to have. Together, they will explore lush beaches, burning volcanoes, freezing mountains, and merciless desert. They will fight an army of CRT’s henchmen, collect powerful upgrades like the Magnetic Glove or the Jetpack, and challenge CRT’s plans — and their destinies — before it’s too late. If you enjoy the classic 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot or the Jak & Daxter series, you will instantly fall in love with Skylar & Plux. Humor, colorful characters, and hours of great gameplay. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island will launch later this year on PS4. I look forward to showing you more stuff in the coming months! View the full article
  24. With all the PlayStation VR news coming out of GDC this week, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to give you a little insight into how we’re approaching development of our upcoming PS VR arena shooter RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. It’s a real honor to be at the vanguard of VR game development, but being first to the plate has not been without its challenges! Read on to learn about some of the surprising things we’ve learned about making video games for virtual reality… 1.) New RulesEarly on, we found out that you can’t just take existing elements, put them in VR, and expect them to work well. You need to build the experience from the ground up and most of the time apply design techniques that haven’t even been written yet. Simple 2D menus, for instance, simply don’t work in VR. So how do you present information to the player in VR? That was quite a challenge for us and in the end we created some very nifty ways in which the player can not only navigate the game but also interact. For example, with traditional 2D screens everything is flat and you don’t have to refocus when you switch between gameplay and HUD elements. In VR the sense of depth is so much greater that switching requires you to refocus your vision. The more details on the HUD, the more information you need to process. So, for example, we are using a charge bar for ammo instead of a counter. 2.) Being ThereRIGS is a game where you pilot six-meter tall RIGs, but how do we make sure you actually feel like you are piloting one of these huge machines around the arena? One of the ways we tell you that you’re actually inside a RIG is that you don’t start the game inside your RIG. You start in the garage looking up at your RIG towering above you. The other example is that once you are inside the RIG, you will see your teammates being lifted inside their respective RIGs. It all comes down to the sense of presence and that is a key element of developing for PlayStation VR. 3.) SoundTalking about presence and how important it is that you feel like you are controlling a six-meter tall RIG, a major component of that is sound. With PlayStation VR we can use 3D positional audio to help. This allows us to let you hear where the danger is coming from. Not only will you be able to hear a missile approaching, you will hear where it is coming from and have an idea of how far it is away from you. This helps the immersion and the gameplay of RIGS. 4.) ComfortRIGS is a fast-paced multiplayer arena shooter in which it is vital that you are able to react quickly to what is happening around you. PlayStation VR has no noticeable latency, so movement is fluid when looking around. This is very important to us and really benefits the experience. Another plus is that PlayStation VR sits very comfortably. After playing for a few minutes you hardly notice that you are wearing it, which is a huge boost to immersion. When playing RIGS we want you to have the most comfortable experience possible. 5.) Playing is BelievingOne thing we found out early on is that the best way to explain VR is to actually experience it. We’ve taken RIGS around the world and been to as many game shows as possible to give people a hands-on experience. In the end, there really is no substitute for getting hands on and trying PS VR for yourself. Be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter account to get the latest info on where we will be next showing RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. View the full article
