The Uncharted series has been consistently praised for its world class narrative, high quality cinematics, and relatable characters. We feel that’s only made possible because of an incredible collaboration between the writers and actors during the entire performance capture shooting schedule – a schedule that can stretch up to several years. At PlayStation Experience 2015, we invite you to join Naughty Dog Creative Director Neil Druckmann and members of the cast as they discuss the process of bringing the characters of Uncharted 4 to life – and give you a peek of what it’s like to be on the performance capture set. If you enjoy solving puzzles, going on adventures, exploring rich landscapes, or piecing together stories, you might just like Xing: The Land Beyond. In this first-person adventure game, you’re already dead. Your main objective in this afterlife is to figure out who you are and what you must ultimately do. Imagine walking up to a gravestone, reading the inscription, and then being transported through space and time to where a defining moment of that person’s life took place. The story is told through the environments you explore, the mysterious messages you encounter, and scattered poetry spoken in the voices of those long past. For those of you who have been following our progress over the past three years, and those who just found out about us today, we have an exciting announcement! PlayStation has quietly been there for us dating back to our first year of development — and now we can proudly (and finally) say that Xing: The Land Beyond will be coming to PS4 in 2016! This year, we have also been given the opportunity to showcase the game at PlayStation Experience in San Francisco during the first weekend of December, and we are very excited! InspirationsWhen we travel to shows, we often get asked the question, “What was your inspiration for making this game?†Puzzle games we admire like Portal and Myst are a large part of our design backbone, along with adventure games like Journey and the Zelda series. We use these games and many more as building blocks for our own ideas to grow. Of course, games aren’t the only things that inspire us. Movies, TV shows, art, stories, and even pictures of interesting places on Google help feed our brains and give us new perspectives. If you’re interested in the specifics, check out our Development Blog. On DesignWhen building the game, we often take an experimental approach in order to understand what makes an immersive experience. If we all like an idea we will prototype it and test. This process allows us to not be afraid to try new things. It’s also the process that turned “lighting coconuts on fire and throwing them around†into a feature, and eventually, a core gameplay mechanic. There are a variety of puzzle types integrated with the environments of each land you visit. On your journey, you will discover ways to control the environments themselves by controlling the elements like rain and snow. Big Project, Small TeamBased on our released videos and screenshots of the game, people often contact us asking about our team size, or what company we outsource the art to. We can proudly say that Xing: The Land Beyond is solely the product of just three developers, using Unreal Engine 4 as our canvas. While it’s a huge undertaking, this game is our passion project: a labor of love, determination, and commitment. One benefit we have from being so small is the ability to cut an idea out of the game entirely the moment we realize it won’t work, or sharpen the focus of a story that might lack depth or clarity. In the same way, we can also add new content to the game if we decide it will help define the story or enhance the gameplay, and ultimately the player’s enjoyment. It’s always exciting when we get to bring Xing: The Land Beyond to a new audience at trade shows and events. Despite being a single-player game, some of our favorite moments attending conventions have been watching friends and couples work together to collaborate and debate puzzle solutions. For those of you planning on attending PlayStation Experience next month, come by and play the demo. For those of you who won’t be making it, you can still join our community by following us on the social media outlet of your choice! Building this game truly has been, and continues to be, quite an adventure. Thanks for reading and please leave us a comment or question! We will be here to answer as much as we can. Winter is coming… to Rocket League! Starting December 14, our previously-announced hockey-inspired Mutator Mode, now called “Snow Day,†will officially replace the “Mutator Mashup†online playlist. Boasting an ice-themed field and a heavy, disc-shaped puck, “Snow Day†brings an awesome new twist to Rocket League’s classic, football-fueled gameplay. We know a lot of you have been waiting a long time to give this one a try, which is why we’re so pleased to finally confirm an official date for you! Besides “Snow Day,†December 14 will also bring several new holiday-themed Garage items! Like October’s Halloween treats before them, the items from Rocket League’s “Winter Games†are limited-time goodies unlocked by simply playing matches (it doesn’t matter if you win or lose!). Though their chances of dropping are lower than a “standard†item’s, the “Winter Games†collection is also yours to keep once you’ve found them. Fail to get all the items before January 4, however, and you’ll have to wait until next year to get them again! Here’s the full list of upcoming “Winter Event†items: “Xmas†Rocket Trail “Blitzen†Topper “Christmas Tree†Topper “Sad Sapling†Topper “Santa†Topper “Candy Cane†Antenna “Holiday Gift†Antenna Prior to the Winter Games event starting December 14, our next DLC, “Chaos Run,†will release next week on December 1 for $3.99 USD! You WILL NOT need to purchase any DLC to gain access to “Snow Day†or the “Winter Games†items, nor will you need the DLC to access our new “Wasteland†map that ships on the same day. If you’re down for some cool, post-apocalyptic exclusive Battle-Cars and customization items, however, then Chaos Run is definitely for you. See you next time! View the full article

Having spent years playing Dungeons and Dragons, one thing always annoyed me: the power differential between spellcasters and the rest of the classes. As a DM, I had to figure out a way to have magic prominent without having my fighters and rogues stacking dice in the corner as a group of my goblins were being blown up by another fireball. So, I took away the wizards and made magic something attainable by anyone who could get their hands on a mask. Players immediately began seeking out masks that enhanced their class abilities. Combat became a dance of steel and spells. And that, in turn, became the basis of what would become Masquerada. Translating the tabletop experience to the screen would be a daunting task, but it was made far easier with the help of Nicholas Chan, our writer. He came up with the idea of using the arts as a kind of foci. Masks provide the raw power, but you need concentration to bend it to your will. Dance, song, and the focus of sports have translated well to how these mask users, these Masquerada, control their magic. Sicarios, the assassins, dance around the battlefield, flinging spells from hand and foot. Pavisierres, the warriors, call power to their core like any good sportsman, before blasting it outwards. Last on the battlefield, are the Dirges — these men and women are best described as combat chaplains. While they fight with song and magic, their role on the battlefield is to record the deaths of their comrades. Morbid, sure, but we are creating a dangerous city, where death constantly creeps around the corner. All these abilities are tied together by the masks and their innate elemental abilities. The team rallied around this core idea and gave it a spine with gameplay inspired by childhood favorites like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age. Tactical Pause was the first thing we talked about. It gave our combat depth, and also the added bonus of allowing people to pace how they’d like to experience Masquerada. Past that, we tinkered much with how the game would play in real time. Obviously, we wanted to retain what we loved in the classics, but we felt like there needed to be some updating with respect to what’s going on today. Looking at games like League of Legends, Smite, and Dota 2, we tried to distill what made them so simple yet engaging. When compared to the classics, we figured that the problem lies with choice paralysis. A player who decisively and effectively uses a small set of skills trumps the player who wields a plethora of skills but doesn’t know what to use at critical moments. With five customizable skills per character across a party of three, the players have options, but will hopefully not be overwhelmed. I think the biggest flak I’ve gotten so far stems from the decision to completely remove the inventory system and a traditional experience point system. I understand why people feel like these things are necessary to qualify the game as an RPG… but what if they really don’t add to the enjoyment of the experience? After some extensive tinkering, we decided to take out anything that doesn’t support the two main pillars of what we’re trying to achieve — good story, good combat. Of story, I must speak of songs and how important they are. Songs are written for fallen Masquerada. Their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. This is the only legacy left behind as Ombre is a city without gods, without religion… without an afterlife. This is the world Nick and I would like to introduce you to. One of power, intrigue, and death. View the full article

It’s Thanksgiving Eve, which means all you boys and girls will be waking up early tomorrow to open presents with all your loved ones. Did Santa bring you a turkey leg this year? Perhaps some stuffing in your stocking? You’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, let’s focus instead on one of the most beautiful traditions of Thanksgiving Eve: announcing release dates for games. We’re beyond honored that PlayStation has invited us to take part in this year’s festivities, and we’re excited to finally be able to tell you that Tharsis will be making its way to PS4 on January 12th. For those just hearing about it, Tharsis is a turn-based strategy game about humanity’s first mission to Mars. It’s an important mission, and not just because of its potential to greatly increase our knowledge of the red planet. No, this mission is humanity’s attempt to locate the source of a mysterious signal emanating from the red planet. To say more than that would spoil the fun, so hopefully that’s enough to pique your interest. We started work on Tharsis more than two years ago, when it was nothing more than a physical prototype made with dice, paper, and lots of love. We spent a lot of time in this stage of development, taking time to ensure that we’d come up with a strategy game that was A) engaging on a mechanical level and unlike anything else on the market. Once we felt we hit those marks, we got to work on taking the game from physical to digital. Much about the game has changed since those early days, but the core mechanics (dice rolling, dynamic “disaster†events, etc.) remained. Developing Tharsis has been nothing short of a blast, but it’s also had its fair share of difficult times. As anyone making a board game — digital or otherwise — will tell you, the “balancing†phase of production can be a long one indeed. It’s a whole lot of trial and error, paired with a hearty dose of throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. But despite the difficulty of it, it’s something that deserves as much time and attention as possible. Without proper balancing, players of Monopoly would be able to pass Go and collect $200 on their way to jail. Without proper balancing, the hippos of Hungry Hungry Hippos probably wouldn’t be so hungry. This is why we made the decision to take all the time we needed to get it right, and that just so happened to be two years, which is about how long it takes for Mars to orbit the Sun. Coincidence? Completely, but still interesting. There’s still a lot about Tharsis we haven’t discussed here. It’s a complex, systems-heavy game, and so we want to take our time with introducing you to what it’s all about. Stay tuned to our Twitter, Facebook, and website for more updates about the game, including a downloadable instruction booklet that will turn you into a professional Video Game Astronaut in no time. Until then, if you have any questions about Tharsis, please feel free to ask away in the comments. We’ll answer as many as we possibly can. Thank you for reading! View the full article

Official SoundtrackAnd finally, we recently released the incredible Tearaway Unfolded soundtrack on iTunes and PlayStation Store, which is available to download now! The soundtrack includes a staggering 50 tracks by award-winning composers Kenneth Young and Brian D’Oliveira, who have written more than an hour of new music for Tearaway Unfolded. We sat down with them recently to chat about the soundtrack and how they brought it from handheld to console… “It was a real pleasure for us to revisit the world of Tearaway. Initially, we were a little nervous of living up to expectations [cough]Best Music BAFTA nomination[/cough], but once we got into the swing of things it was very much a case of picking up our collaboration from where we left off. “Whilst we reworked and augmented some of the music to make it a better fit for the larger world in Unfolded, for the most part we were writing brand new material — there’s over an hour of new music in the game, which is actually kinda crazy, but it’s also a pretty good metric for understanding how different Tearaway Unfolded is on PlayStation 4 compared to Tearaway on PS Vita! “The official soundtrack album for Tearaway Unfolded is a curated experience which represents the best of that music — almost two hours of infectious folk melodies, a unique blend and mashup of styles and instrumentation, all perfectly fitting for Media Molecule’s trademark eclecticism. Now that it’s available on iTunes and PlayStation Store, we hope that fans will continue to enjoy breaking the fourth wall by bringing a little more of Tearaway Unfolded into their worlds.†-Kenneth Young & Brian D’Oliveira Thanks for reading folks, we look forward to seeing all your festive Messengers on tearaway.me! We tell stories over campfires, cocktails, loudspeakers, and controllers. Storytelling is one of the truest expressions of the human experience, and serves a key role in gaming. We at PlayStation want to celebrate this artform at PlayStation Experience on December 5th. It is my great pleasure to invite you to The Future of Storytelling panel, where we’ll hear from an incredible lineup of guests that have each contributed to this timeless art through various applications of technology and gaming. What inspired their craft during childhood? How did they build their tales on PlayStation? And what will they do next to drive the entire art forward? We’ll ask these questions, and more. Here’s everything you need to know, at a glance… What: The Future of Storytelling Where: San Francisco, CA — Moscone West Hall, 3rd Floor When: Saturday, December 5th. 6:00PM Pacific Who: Cory Barlog, Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio Jenova Chen, Creative Director at thatgamecompany Kareem Ettouney, Creative Director at Media Molecule Greg Kasavin, Writing & Design at Supergiant Games If you’ve ever played a game with a great story, then this is a panel you don’t want to miss. It’s not every day that you bring some of the most experienced storytellers in the business into one room. Remember, you can still buy tickets to PlayStation Experience and reserve discounted hotel rooms right here. I hope to see you there! View the full article

Hi everyone! The holiday season is fast-approaching and we’re getting into the spirit of giving with deals on games best played together. Save up to 80 percent on co-op and multiplayer titles you can enjoy with family and friends, on the couch or online. PlayStation Plus members save up to 90 percent. Head over to PlayStation Store through Monday, November 30th to pick up favorites like Rocket League, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and more. Check out the full lineup below. But that’s not all. Starting right now, PS Store is offering a limited-time storewide coupon to help you save even more. Redeem code FH24P5BDR6 at checkout to receive a 10 percent discount on one total cart purchase. It’s been three years since Retro City Rampage was released, but a new game from Vblank Entertainment is finally on its way for PS4 and PS Vita! Check out the trailer for a sneak peek: Shakedown Hawaii brings the Vblank open world universe into the 16-bit era, powered up with destructible environments and an arsenal of supercharged weapons. Taking place some thirty years after the events of Retro City Rampage, the game follows The Player as he comes out of early retirement to rebuild his neglected corporate empire. The RundownWhat a tease! I know that’s not much to go on, but much more will be revealed next-next weekend, as Shakedown Hawaii makes its first playable debut at PlayStation Experience December 5-6th. That’s all for now! Drop your questions in the comments below! View the full article

Hi everyone, and welcome to our November DLC update from the team at Rocksteady Studios. We have a load of content for Batman: Arkham Knight out today on PlayStation Store, so read on for more details. Perhaps one of the most exciting additions to our Batmobile line up, and well ahead of the release of the hugely anticipated movie Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, is the 2016 Batman V Superman Batmobile and Batsuit Skin. We’re giving you the chance to get up close and personal with Zak Snyder’s vision of, perhaps, the most famous car in the world. Only in Batman: Arkham Knight will you be able to don the new suit and drive this incredible vehicle through Gotham City or test its performance on any of our Batmobile racetracks. Working extremely closely with the movie production team we’ve put a huge amount of effort into replicating the handling of this low slung behemoth, as well as accurately bringing the cacophony of its engine noise to life. We feel hugely privileged to be able to bring you this unique experience and can’t wait to see what you do with the 2016 Batman v Superman Batmobile Pack through our photo mode and PlayStation Share. Best of all, the 2016 Batman v Superman Batmobile Pack is free for everyone, with our Season Pass holders getting one week’s early access starting today. Catwoman and Robin get their own Arkham Episodes, starring in Catwoman’s Revenge and Flip Of A Coin respectively. Catwoman’s Revenge lets you play as Selina Kyle and takes place after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight. Having escaped from the Riddler’s clutches, Catwoman has located the Riddler’s robot factory with the intention of wreaking havoc and, you’ve guessed it, extracting her revenge. In Flip Of A Coin, Two Face has escaped from GCPD and it’s Robin’s job, with the help of Barbara Gordon, to track him down. Players will visit the Hells Gate Disposal and Legal Services depot with an aim to re-capturing Harvey and bringing him to justice. Both of these Arkham Episodes also include two AR Challenge maps for you to take on with any playable character, and we’re also adding two AR Challenges for our previously released Nightwing Arkham Episode: GCPD Lockdown. Crime Fighter Challenge Packs also return this month with pack number 4 bringing a mix of Freeflow Combat, Silent Predator, and Dual Play Predator. What’s more, we’ve also included character selection in all of our Silent Predator maps. You’ll also get the chance to stretch all of your Batmobile’s legs on two new racetracks as part of the WayneTech Track Pack. These fiendish courses were designed by Bruce Wayne to test the limits of the Batmobile prior to tackling the forces of The Arkham Knight. And staying with the Batmobile, we’re also bringing you a new Riddler themed Batmobile skin and the Tim Drake Robin Skin Pack that not only includes a bright red paint job for the Batmobile, but also a new Tim Drake skin for Robin himself. As always, thank you for your ongoing support. View the full article

I’d like to talk to you about some cool features of Stories: The Path of Destinies, namely treasures and magic swords. In case you accidentally missed our previous post, Stories: The Path of Destinies is an action-RPG, an enchanted storybook filled with madcap fantasy tales, each told by a zippy narrator attuned to the player’s choices and actions. You take the role of Reynardo the fox in the decisive moments before the final battle between the army of an Emperor gone mad and the Rebellion. It’s not looking good for the rebels, and only Reynardo can turn the tide… if he makes the right choices. Good thing Reynardo is a Master of Sword Fu, a fast-paced, stylish combat style that can be customized with spectacular Dash and Grab techniques, as well as immensely powerful Time Mastery abilities. Such skills require the proper tools, however, which brings me to treasures. As part of the feeling of adventure we wanted to give to our players in Stories, it was really important to us that Reynardo be able to explore the various locations of the world of Boreas and uncover hidden secrets, loot some treasures (he is an ex-pirate, after all), and gear himself up with some badass magic swords! Some of the most precious treasures Reynardo can find during his adventures are rare magical gems. Equipping these shiny baubles will enhance our swashbuckling hero’s natural abilities, like resistance, speed, or damage. There are multiple combinations you can choose from to customize Reynardo to your liking. But I mentioned awesome weapons, too! The crafty Reynardo can also forge magical swords, provided he has the right materials. And with names like Firestorm and Winterthorne, you can tell right away they’re much more badass than regular swords. They have unique powers that Reynardo can activate when he’s in trouble (which is rather likely in his current predicament), or just when he feels like being cooler than usual. Each attack done with Firestorm will be accompanied by a fiery explosion that will incinerate any bad guys unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of its blade. And, well, you can probably guess what kind of state Winterthorne will leave your enemies in. Which sword will you equip? How will it change the way you play the game? Narrative choices are not the only choices you can make in Stories: The Path of Destinies. Come write your own story at PlayStation Experience! View the full article

Hello, Bloodborne fans! The Old Hunters expansion will soon be bringing a brand new nightmare world of dangers and horrors for you to conquer, not to mention a host of new weapons and armor for your arsenal. If you haven’t yet, pre-order on PlayStation Store by Monday to get a special bonus PS4 theme. That way you can have it equipped when The Old Hunters launches on Tuesday for $19.99. Keep reading for more information about the expansion and how to access it within the game, as well as details about the new content and updated online features in the 1.07 title update hitting today (title update available to all Bloodborne players). As outlined in previous blog posts, as well as the website, The Old Hunters introduces many new horrific environments and enemies, as well as devastating new weapons and abilities. Bloodborne | PlayStation.com Brador, seen donning the scalp and horns of a foul beast, is an ancient Hunter and assassin once employed by the Healing Church who sits in a dark cell, waiting for something—or someone—with bell in hand. And while exploring the new nightmare, beware of the Bell Holder. This massive enemy wields the Bell Axe and is one of the most formidable beasts you will face. I’m also excited to share information about two new weapons available in The Old Hunters expansion. The first is the Bloodletter, a sick and demented weapon wielded by Brador. This weapon assumes its true form after drawing upon the blood of its wielder. In other words, you must plunge it into your own chest in order to unleash its true power. You will also find the Gatling Gun, a portable version of the stationary rapid-fire gun that Djura uses to rain down lead from the tower in Old Yharnam. While it is great for rapid-fire attacks, it is also cumbersome and goes through Quicksilver Bullets very quickly. Players will also discover a new rune called The Beast’s Embrace. After many failed experiments, this rune was forbidden from use. That did not stop its discovery from becoming the foundation of the Healing Church, however. Those brave, or foolish, enough to unleash the power of this rune take on a ghastly form and enjoy boosted transformation effects, especially when wielding a beast weapon. Once you have purchased and downloaded The Old Hunters expansion, you’ll need to follow the below steps to access the new content. Step 1Defeat the boss of the Cathedral Ward and examine the altar in the back of the room to change the in-game time to night. Step 2Go to the Hunter’s Dream and receive the Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter from a messenger. Step 3Go to the Oedon Chapel and leave via the left-hand exit to enter the square. Step 41. Go to the right-hand end of the square to trigger an event. This event will take you to the new area: the Hunter’s Nightmare. 2. Lighting the lamp in the new area will allow you to travel to and from the area via an Awakening Headstone in the Hunter’s Dream. Prior to the launch of the DLC, all Bloodborne owners will receive title update 1.07, which adds new features and drastically changes the online component of the game. The patch goes live today, so remember to update your game and try out the new features. As mentioned in our last blog post, update 1.07 also adds the “League†feature and introduces new NPCs into the game’s world. Join the League by meeting with Summon Master Valtr and obtaining the “Impurity†rune. You’ll need to summon him inside the shack to the right of the first lamp in the Forbidden Forest. Once you have memorized the “Impurity†rune, you will be able to access League ranking screens. Upon successfully completing a coop session, you’ll receive the “Vermin†which you must crush to increase your points and therefore your position on the League leaderboard. You will also be able to summon NPCs to come to your aid, just like cooperative play, including inside Chalice Dungeons. To do so, first you will need to acquire the “Old Hunter Bell†from the messengers in the Hunter’s Dream area. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters, or a mix of one NPC Hunter and one other online coop player. In addition, when there are players near you that have used the Beckoning Bell or Small Resonant Bell and are waiting to join a coop session, they will appear in your game as an illusion or phantom with a ripple effect at their feet. That assumes they are within the correct level range and would be able to match with you. View the full article

As we near the end of 2015 there’s one thing we can all look forward to… No, it’s not the holidays, but Capcom Cup! That’s right, this year’s Capcom Cup will send Ultra Street Fighter IV off in the grandest event possible as 32 of the world’s best meet in San Francisco at PlayStation Experience on December 6th to fight for their piece of the $250,000 prize pool! If you’ve been following the Capcom Pro Tour, then you know that players from around the world have been traveling from country to country, continent to continent, trying to secure their spot at Capcom Cup or gather enough points for one of the 15 spots available in the 32 man finals. Now that the dust is just about settled (with the last spot to be decided at Dreamhack Winter this November 26th – 29th), Capcom Cup 2015 is shaping up to be the greatest competitive Street Fighter tournament of the last decade! For those of you wondering what the schedule, bracket format, and prize distribution for Capcom Cup is, allow me to provide that information below: Payout 1st: $125,000 2nd: $60,000 3rd: $25,000 4th: $15,000 5th & 6th: $10,000 (each) 7th & 8th: $5,000 (each) Schedule 10:00 AM — Opening Ceremony 10:30 AM — Round 1 and 2 2:00 PM — Analyst Desk 2:30 PM — Top 16 to Top 8 5:30 PM — Analyst Desk / Break 6:30 PM — Top 8 9:30 PM — Closing / Awards Ceremony The bracket will be double elimination, best two out of three matches up to top 16. From there, all matches will be best three out of five. With 32 of the world’s best Street Fighter players all under one roof, we expect every single match to be beyond hype. That said, this year we’ll have two streams available for those of you watching from home so that you won’t miss any of the high profile matches going down! We recommend viewers tune into the Capcom Pro Tour site for the ultimate experience as they will be able to follow both streams as well as the Capcom Cup brackets once the action goes live. Tickets are still on sale, so if you can make it to San Francisco during that time, be sure to come! Remember you’ll need to buy either the two-day pass or the Sunday Only pass in order to watch Capcom Cup. Needless to say, after this year’s extensive and challenging Capcom Pro Tour season, there will be no disputing that this year’s Capcom Cup champion is the best player in the world! Our tiny team has some giant news! Jenny LeClue – Detectivú will be launching on PS4 next year! Now stop reading and watch the teaser trailer, seriously! We’ve put a ton of love into crafting a compelling universe. You’ll know right away if our cute and creepy adventure is right for you! You’re still here, great! So let’s uncover what Jenny LeClue is, what makes it so special, and why you might want to play it. Jenny LeClue is a story-focused exploration adventure game with memorable characters, a unique aesthetic, and an epic, tangled mystery. You play as Jenny, a brilliant young detective living in Arthurton. Nothing exciting happens in her small town and she longs for real adventure. She gets more than she bargains for when her mother is accused of murder. Jenny takes on the case of a lifetime and begins an unexpected, dangerous journey to uncover the truth; she soon discovers that nothing in Arthurton is what it seems. Unseen forces will stop at nothing to keep her from the truth. And she will have to use her skills of deduction to find the real killer. Who can she trust? How will she outwit the ever watchful Sheriff? Why has the lake started glowing at night? And why does everyone keep treating her like a kid? This is a coming of age tale. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary, always mysterious. It’s a story about finding our strengths, accepting our weaknesses, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. So what makes Jenny LeClue unique? Jenny LeClue weaves a story-within-a-story where the players influence the outcome. Jenny’s world exists in a series of adventure books that author Arthur K. Finklestein has created. The author acts as narrator and guide. Together, you, Jenny, and the author all influence each other. Players will make choices in their individual game, and some of those choices will permanently affect the way we write later chapters. So we all own a part in creating Jenny’s story! Jenny LeClue is a strong female protagonist, surrounded by a diverse cast of characters. She’s a brilliant young detective, sharp eyed, intuitive and a ruthless pursuer of the truth. As Jenny, you will rely on your keen detective’s intuition during conversations. Search suspects for revealing clues, proving their guilt or innocence and opening new dialogue options. Stylistically, we’ve focused on creating a sleek and gorgeous hand drawn style with atmospheric charm. The art reflects Jenny’s mid-century world. She won’t be relying on her smartphone to look up answers on Wikipedia! Arthurton is a rich, living world, that rewards players’ curiosity with insight, secrets, and humor. You’ll explore the abandoned mines and the forgotten graveyard. You’ll skip stones by the lake, and break into the museum to uncover dark truths. We envision Jenny LeClue as a trilogy that rewards exploration and curiosity at every turn. And after a successful Kickstarter, we’ve been crafting Jenny LeClue for more than a year. Our core team of three comes from a storytelling, design, and animation background. We’re crafting a narrative thick with atmosphere and emotion, inspired by our love for mystery, adventure, and the weird. As you can tell, we’re super excited to bring the game to PS4! It’s such a vibrant platform for indie games and we’re excited to be a part of it! We’re making cool interactions using the unique features of PS4. We hope to talk more about the game design, story, and art direction in future posts. If you are attending Playstation Experience, stop by our booth for exclusive swag, witty banter, and to play Jenny LeClue! What else would you like to know about Jenny LeClue and our team? We’d love to hear any questions you have. View the full article

It had been a long time coming, so when the MidBoss team decided to form a game studio and asked me to be the Director and Lead Artist, things just kind of slid into place. We had just finished running the first of what became the annual GaymerX convention, so the words “make your own games†were still ringing in our ears, I think. I had experience with and a fondness for 2D art and we all loved narrative driven gameplay, so an adventure game was kind of a natural step for us. We decided to both honor the classic aesthetics of an older genre but also revitalize it with a more modern spin on characters, storytelling, and even mechanics. With all of these pieces in place, plus a sweet cyberpunk finish, Read Only Memories was born. Making a graphic adventure game for the modern era is a lot more complicated than it seems at first glance, especially with the approach that we took. Branching narrative paths give players near endless possibilities and make multiple playthroughs rewarding. Of course, that also meant we had to account for every which way that a player might go and make sure that things worked and made sense. Before we knew it, we had a much more massive project in our hands than originally expected. Characters were super important to us from the very beginning. Even on early demos the thing that people got really excited about were the characters. One of the characters, Jess, did little more than just call you a jerk– and people loved her! We got braver about putting in more diverse and interesting characters after this. Seeing all of my characters go from goofy little doodles I made years ago to fully animated, often sassy, chatty friends on the screen is still surreal. We thought a lot about what could or should be seen as normal and everyday in the future world of 2064 and how we could bring people into that world. Players are allowed to select their name, pronouns, and even their diet! We didn’t even have anything planned for the diet part! It was still cool to have, though, so it stayed. Although the protagonist character clearly lives their own life in Neo-San Francisco, allowing for these little things lets players fine tune themselves and feel closer to the setting. Of course, you can make awesome characters and stories all day but if your mechanics don’t work with them, they just don’t translate. This was definitely one of our biggest challenges. Not only did we have to create this world and cast but we had to let the player interact with them in ways that mattered. A lot of old-school adventure games used things like combining items, pixel hunting, and other mechanics that we kind of did away with. These things mainly added a layer of artificial difficulty (and frustration). We wanted players to more organically play out the role of virtual detective and kept the puzzles to using items and navigating conversations. In fact, and I don’t think we’ve been very open about this, most puzzles actually have multiple solutions, which can affect the flow of the story. Our goal was that each player would naturally gravitate towards a solution that fit their personality. We try not to say too much when people comment on things that happened that they don’t realize they could have changed or prevented. It’s been an incredible journey and I’m not really sure how I got to this point but I’m really excited to be doing this. For being the first game in our studio, the praise we have gotten for the game has been incredible. I hope to work on more titles for the folks that love this game and I know we’re going to be sneaking more content in down the line… View the full article

Hello, PlayStation fans. I’m pleased to announce that Beyond: Two Souls is coming to PS4 next week, complete with graphical improvements and new fan-requested features. You’ll be able to download it from PlayStation Store starting November 24th for $29.99. Players will have another chance to experience the story of Jodie Holmes (played, excellently, by Ellen Page), a young woman who possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to an invisible entity. Holmes’ journey is intertwined with the complex Dr. Dawkins (brought to life by the inimitable Willem Dafoe), on PS4. The PS4 edition of the game features a number of improvements: Enhanced 1080p graphics including motion blur, bloom and depth of field effects, as well as improved lighting and shadows. The game also makes use of the DualShock 4 speaker to improve immersion when playing as the Entity. Decisions are highlighted at the end of each scene and compared with those made by other players. You can now play the game in chronological order right from the start – a much requested feature in the PS3 version! Increased difficulty in certain fight scene, combined with improved controls for action sequences. Includes the “Enhanced Experiments†DLC. Update: An earlier version of this post stated that players would have to complete the game before being able to play it in chronological order. This feature is unlocked from the start of the game. We can also now confirm that Heavy Rain will be coming to PS4 digitally next year on March 1st. For those attending PlayStation Experience this year, you’ll be able to get hands-on time with both Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain. What’s more, those who purchase Beyond: Two Souls digitally will be entitled to download Heavy Rain on PS4 when it releases at a discount. We really hope you enjoy revisiting these games or experiencing them for the first time! View the full article
