  1. This is Marc from Drool with an update on Thumper, our rhythm violence game on PS4. In Thumper, you are a space beetle hurtling towards a maniacal giant head. The gameplay and controls are stripped-down and simple, so it’s easy to pick up and play. We’ve worked hard to make Thumper accessible and fun for both hardcore rhythm gamers and more casual action game fans. But as you delve deeper into Thumper, it won’t be easy. Our focus on simplicity lets us push the sense of speed and physicality to extremes you’ve never felt in a rhythm game before. Before you know it, you’ll be careening through an onslaught of winding tracks, obstacles, enemies, and bosses. Check out our latest trailer for a glimpse of unrelenting “rhythm hell†from one of our advanced levels. And let us know what you think! In the trailer, if you look closely, you’ll notice some new gameplay mechanics you’ll need to master. In early levels, your movement is limited to a single high-speed lane. But as the difficulty rises, you’ll slide and skitter across multiple lanes of rhythmic cues and obstacles. We’re still fine-tuning the controls and feel of multi-lane gameplay, but we’re psyched about the unique and brutal gameplay we can create with it. It’s expanded our level design palette and now we’re developing lots of new ways to kill you! Finally, Thumper is not only debuting on PS4. It’s also coming to PlayStation VR. To be honest, at first we weren’t sure whether Thumper would be a good fit for VR. We’ve spent the past few years obsessed with making Thumper the most intense two-dimensional experience possible. Wouldn’t a VR version be too intense? Well, against our better judgement, we recently got the game running on PS VR just to see. We can confirm that not only is it intense, it’s completely overwhelming! Developing for PS VR has been so exciting because Thumper’s gameplay translates perfectly and feels amazing on high frame rate display. At the same time, VR transforms the experience in ways we didn’t expect. We’ll have more to say about Thumper VR soon, but one thing is for sure: the entire game will be playable in both 2D and VR. Whether you play on a massive TV and sound system or fully immerse yourself with PlayStation VR, you’ll feel the rhythm violence when Thumper debuts later this year. View the full article
  2. We’ve got a great treat for you as we head into the final weeks of development — today, we are kicking off our five-episode behind-the-scenes series, The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The video team at PlayStation was given incredible access to our studio, game assets, and many of the people working on Uncharted 4, to craft a compelling series to cap off this final chapter for Nathan Drake. We’re calling this first episode The Evolution of a Franchise. It’s a great way to kick off this “Making of†series, as we take a brief look how Naughty Dog and the Uncharted series has evolved since Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune made its debut on PS3 in 2007, including the influence of The Last of Us on the team and our development process. Enough talk, here’s the first episode of The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The five-episode series is scheduled to be released throughout March and April, so check back to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. You’ll want to stick around for the full series — I would go so far as to say it was emotional for a few people here to watch by the time the series wrapped up. Here’s a quick rundown at the upcoming episodes: The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: The Evolution of a Franchise The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Growing up with Drake The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Pushing Technical Boundaries Part 1 The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: Pushing Technical Boundaries Part 2 The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: In the End The team is still hard at work finishing up Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and we’ll be revealing more leading up to the worldwide release on May 10th, 2016. Pre-order your copy now if you haven’t already. View the full article

  4. Hey there PlayStation.Blog readers. This year we’re celebrating 21 years of Worms. Originally launched in 1995, Worms has long been a staple for many gamers. To mark the occasion, I’m here today to let you know that Worms W.M.D will be heading to PS4 later this year! Featuring a fresh, brand new look and gorgeous hand-drawn landscapes. The first thing I’m thrilled to tell you about in Worms W.M.D is the vehicles! Currently we have a helicopter and a tank in the game that the worms are able to use during battle. When it’s your turn, simply approach a vehicle and hop in to start using it. Take to the skies and rain down bullets on the worms below using the helicopter, or traverse across the landscape in warfare-ready tanks, which will help you get around faster, protect your worms, and fire a barrage of shots. The next big change for Worms W.M.D is the implementation of brand new buildings. Previously in Worms, the landscape in the 2D entries has been a flat texture to play across. Now we’re introducing buildings, which are really awesome and offer a great tactical advantage — especially in online games! You can enter a building and fire off shots from inside, but when the turn passes, your worm will be hidden inside. The game is looking beautiful so far and a lot of that is down to the improved landscape generator. In past games, players would battle across randomly generated landscapes that had a texture applied and then a fringe layer of grass etc. over the top. We’ve been working hard to improve the landscape generator so that now we are able to have individually drawn landscape pieces that the generator knows how to place together to make fun, unique maps to play on. They look brilliant. As always, you can definitely expect solid single-player modes and crazy local and online multiplayer for you to wreak havoc in. All with that essential feel of the classic Worms experience but with beautiful, modern new additions that really add to the gameplay. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this post. We’ve still got a lot more to reveal about Worms W.M.D so please do stay tuned. We can’t wait to launch the game on PS4 later this year, and we hope to play against/with you online! 5. There is a feeling that I remember from when I was a kid playing video games: the huge, intense satisfaction when I finally beat a level or a boss I had been struggling with for a while. The feeling of learning how to overcome a challenge, with my brain and my thumbs. The combination of understanding and execution felt like a reward in itself. I remember it from games like Super Punch Out, bosses from Metal Gear Solid, combat in God Hand. There are many games that gave me that feeling, but recently I’ve felt that games try too hard to be “user friendly.†Adaptive difficulty, dynamic checkpoints, in-game tips… Everything is explained and balanced to make sure nobody drops out. With Furi, we want to give the player an extreme satisfaction when he or she beats a boss. That means he or she will have to sweat a little for it. Furi is heavily inspired by the Japanese way of making games. It’s not trying to be realistic in its style or animations. It’s fast-paced and requires a lot of timing, reflex, and judgment. When you press a button, the character reacts immediately. It’s part of what makes it “fair.†Too often in modern games, we press a button and then, in order to make the game look realistic, the character will start an animation that “looks good†but “feels heavy,†and is unresponsive, even laggy. Responsive controls feel good and are a must-have in a combat game. The gameplay in Furi is the essence of the catchphrase “easy to learn, hard to master.†There are very few buttons to press or abilities to remember. You can slash with your sword, shoot with your gun, dodge, and parry. That’s about it. You can charge the slash attack, the gunshot, and the dodge. It’ll result in a more powerful slash that stuns the opponent, a more powerful gunshot that knocks him or her down, and a longer dodge. But once you’ve got that, you can play Furi. It’s like a guitar: it has six strings, but you need practice to play it correctly. And there’s no limit to how much you can improve. It’s simple and deep. The challenges are mostly based on a simple formula: be warned, react, punish. Dodge a laser. Parry a sword attack. Wait for the weakness in your opponent’s posture, and bam, punish. The real depth in the gameplay comes from the differences between the bosses. It’s not about learning tons of combos to beat the next boss, it’s about how you play a few moves differently to beat a different opponent. Some bosses, or “guardians,†will focus more on shooting. Others will challenge mostly your sword fighting. Some opponents are deadly and will knock you down in two or three hits. Some fights will require a lot of focus over a long time. A fight can last 10 minutes or 90 minutes depending on how you play. And of course, each guardian in the game has one or two special tricks, weapons, or abilities that make him or her unique. In our latest trailer we’re showing one of the fiercest guardians. She is a tactician, a hunter, a playful mercenary who doesn’t leave anything to chance. She has planned her fight and has weapons to help her win: drones, a laser sniper rifle, great camouflage, and she can even control every bit of the arena she fights in, raising cover and blocking paths. At first, she’ll hunt you, hidden in her maze, shooting at you while you are distracted by her cyber-bees. You will have to find her, and attack her before she relocates. You’ll get to face her for a while if you can do that, but that’s still playing into her hand. In order to take her out of her comfort zone, you’ll have to follow her into her nest, in the center of the maze, and knock her out once or twice. Once this is done, she’ll get pissed off and she’ll keep sniping at you while you have to dodge waves of bullets coming fast. Eventually, the final challenge is to fight her hand to hand… while she is invisible! This requires sharp reflexes and focus. I recommend taking a break after beating her. Because I know the guardian that comes after! We’re interested in hearing your feedback. Let us know what you think and if you have questions. View the full article

  8. Hello friends, my name is David OReilly. I’m an artist based in Los Angeles and am from a town called Kilkenny in Ireland. Some of you might be familiar with my films, most of which are short or very short, and more might be familiar with the video game sequences I created in the movie Her. Mostly I am concerned with the medium of 3D and it’s effect on our brains. I have been working on a new project for a long time with some very talented people, and I’m excited about sharing it with you today. In Everything, every single thing is a playable character; if you can see it, you can be it. The game lets you see the entire universe from the point of view of the thousands of things in it. In other words, there is no distinction between you and the world, or between a level and a character. All these things experience and interact with the world differently. Everything lets you be anything you want. If you ever wanted to see what it’s like to be a horse, or a paperclip, or the sun, this is for you. Your main power in the game is Being (there are more but I won’t ruin the surprise). This very simple idea has involved years of research and development, as virtually all game engines expect a lot of things to be static and non interactive. I should mention that I’m still quite new to this, and though I was very excited about this idea, I had no clue how backwards it was or how much work it would be. Together with Damien DiFede (who writes all of the code) we developed an entirely new way to create and design levels, which treat objects more like ecosystems, and slightly closer to how they would be in nature. Everything is a game about the things we see, their relationships, and their points of view. In this context, things are how we separate reality so we can understand it and talk about it with each other. It sounds obvious, but people have been arguing about what things are since the dawn of time. This was the subject of my last game Mountain, and Everything explores this idea and more in much greater depth, and in a much more fun way. Everything is launching exclusively on PS4 in the future (As soon as we finish it!). View the full article
  9. Hi everyone! I’m very excited to announce the inaugural lineup for a new PlayStation Store event called Launch Party. One of the best perks about being on the PlayStation Store team is that we get to work very closely with both first and third party studio teams on previewing upcoming releases. Launch Party is a celebration of our favorite digital games releasing this spring – selected in collaboration with our colleagues on both the 1st and 3rd party teams. Some of you may remember our yearly Spring Fever campaign, which we’re retiring in name only. We’ll still have great weekly deals on games and movies from your favorite blockbuster franchises (In fact, you can check out this year’s franchise sale lineup right here!), but we really wanted to let the new games have the spotlight with their own event. Pre-order any Launch Party title from PlayStation Store and not only will you be able to pre-load and play them right when they release, but you’ll also get 10% off. Note: Pre-orders for the Launch Party lineup are currently in the process of going live on PlayStation Store — if one isn’t working for you yet give it a few minutes! As Andy said, we’ve been working closely together for months to put together an amazing Launch Party lineup for you, featuring some of the digital games we’ve been most looking forward to. Here’s a bit of background on each, and why you should lock in those pre-order discounts now! Salt and Sanctuary We’ve admired Ska Studios’ games from afar for years, and we’re so thrilled to have their latest masterpiece debut exclusively on PS4! If you’ve enjoyed games like Bloodborne or Dark Souls you’ll feel right at home in Salt and Sanctuary’s brutal but beautiful world (brutiful?). Deep combat and rich RPG elements, all set in a cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, and desecrated monuments. What else could you want? *Note: Salt and Sanctuary is still in development for PS Vita, and will be cross-buy with PS4 when it’s released Day of the Tentacle Remastered We’re so excited to be working with Double Fine on bringing another classic LucasArts adventure to PS4, after their fantastic work on Grim Fandango. Originally released in 1993, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travelling, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world! This loving remaster features all-new, hand-drawn, high-resolution artwork, with remastered music and sound effects. Enter the Gungeon Enter the Gungeon is the latest in our ongoing partnership (more of a kinship, really) with Devolver Digital, developed by the devious geniuses at Dodge Roll. Making its console debut on PS4, Gungeon combines The Binding of Isaac-style dungeons with an action-packed repertoire of shooting, looting, dodge-rolling, and table-flipping (and two-player local co-op!). All on a quest to reach the ultimate treasure: a gun that can kill the past! (Of course.) Stories: The Path of Destinies Spearhead Games was one of the very first developers to jump on the PS4 train with their underrated multiplayer puzzler Tiny Brains. They’ve been working hard ever since on a sumptuous action-RPG called Stories: The Path of Destinies, a madcap epic fantasy where each choice you make takes you through a different story. Each story — some dark, some romantic, all action-packed — is true in its way, and will lead you to victory if you pay enough attention… Invisible, Inc. If you’re anything like us, you’re still playing Klei Entertainment’s singular PS4 survival sim Don’t Starve, over two years later. Invisible, Inc. is a very different beast, but similarly applies Klei’s whip-smart design prowess and beautifully stylized aesthetic to a tactical turn-based adventure. 10. Hey baseball fans. I’m Lance Leahy, one of the game designers at San Diego Studio. I wanted to give everyone a rundown of two brand new game modes coming to MLB The Show this year. Diamond Dynasty exploded last year and is quickly becoming one of the most popular modes in the franchise. In The Show 16, players will have more ways than ever to play America’s pastime with the introduction of Battle Royale and Conquest game modes. Battle Royale is the most challenging and competitive game mode Diamond Dynasty has ever seen. In this player-versus-player experience, you’ll be challenged to draft a team and outlast opponents in a double-elimination tournament to acquire unique rewards. Conquest is like a classic turn-based strategy game that pits you against the 30 MLB teams on a map of North America. You’ll be tasked with the challenge of defeating MLB teams and conquering territories in order to complete specific missions that contain team-specific rewards. Be sure to join us this Thursday on the San Diego Studio Twitch channel to get an exclusive, deep dive tour covering Battle Royale and Conquest. If you have any questions about either of these features, feel free to ask them in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to address your questions at the end of next week’s livestream. And don’t forget, PS4 pre-orders for MLB The Show 16 are now live. Check out the MVP, Standard Edition, and bonus items right here! In the meantime, we’ll be sending out news and updates at The Show Nation. View the full article
  11. Tom Clancy’s The Division launches on PS4 on March 8th, 2016… that’s tomorrow! Set in a representation of New York ravaged by a biological attack, Ubisoft Massive’s third-person, cover-based shooter features a heavy emphasis on player progression, loot collection, and social interaction. Having played the recent open beta of The Division, we had lots of questions for the team behind this ambitious new project. We got in touch with Martin Hultberg, IP Director from Ubisoft Massive, to learn more. Tom Clancy’s The Division | PlayStation.com PlayStation.Blog: The Division is a huge project with a lot going on — how would you describe it in a single sentence? Martin Hultberg: A highly immersive and social open world RPG-shooter set in the most realistically recreated New York ever, where a deadly pandemic has brought the city to the edge of collapse and even your best friend can become your worst enemy. “We see The Division as the start of something bigger than just the initial release.†PSB: Loot-based shooters are becoming more and more popular. What’s your approach to the loot system in The Division? MH: We have separated them between two types of loot; equipment and cosmetic items. Equipment, like weapons and gear, affects the stats and power of your character. Cosmetic items allow you to create a unique character of your own. Being a shooter, weapons are of course important and they can be fitted with mods and skins to further enhance or change both performance and appearance. PSB: Are you building The Division as a long-term experience? Will players have reasons to keep playing after finishing the main campaign? MH: We see The Division as the start of something bigger than just the initial release as we have extensive plans for updates and DLC. Our goal is to create a universe we can expand on, together with the fans who play it. PSB: The Dark Zone is an interesting social experience. At what point during development was it implemented, and what is its role in The Division’s overall ecosystem? MH: The Dark Zone concept has always been at the heart of the game. It is a social experience, with everything from casual social spaces, to cooperative group play and the risk of adversarial encounters in the Dark Zone. The idea is to create a very dynamic and tense situation with high risk and high reward; something that will resonate with players who want to explore, look for loot or fight other people. PSB: What has the team learned as a result of the recent open beta? Have any significant changes been made as a result of player feedback? MH: I think we learned a lot. We found some issues we hadn’t seen before, got confirmation on how people acted with features like the Dark Zone, and had a chance to do loads of optimization and bug fixes. This is what betas are good for and we got a great deal out of them. PSB: What was the team’s goal when designing and implementing Proximity Chat? It certainly leads to some tense situations. MH: Exactly that! Communication is key and we have always tried to get this into our games. It is a perfect fit for the Dark Zone where we want to create tension, suspense and fragile teamwork. “We’ve taken some liberties in recreating New York, but it is quite close.†PSB: How 1:1 is the architecture and layout of The Division’s New York to the real-life city? MH: We’ve taken some liberties in recreating New York, but it is quite close. It isn’t just about the size, but the detailed recreation of everything from graffiti to certain buildings. It really feels like New York as you walk through it. PSB: The Division excels as a multiplayer experience. Is it designed primarily around social interaction, or will players be able to fly through the game solo without feeling like they’re missing too much? MH: You can play it alone, for sure! There are many systems that encourage and try to tease that social experience of playing with or against others, but if you don’t want that then the game has a full single-player experience as well. 14. Today we’re thrilled to tell players that Sniper Elite 4 is coming to PS4 this year. What you’ll want to know, of course, is what makes Sniper Elite 4 special, whether you’re a sharpshooting veteran or a rookie looking to get their teeth into a new third-person stealth action game — especially now that it’s the first in the series to be developed from the ground up for PS4. I thought it might be nice to reveal a few secrets from the teaser trailer to get the juices flowing. Enjoy! 1943Why is that opening date so important? Well, it places the game firmly in World War II of course, but there’s more to it than that. Sniper Elite 4 is set in Italy in the direct aftermath of the North African conflict seen in Sniper Elite 3, and Fascism’s grip on the Mediterranean is slipping. Enter covert agent and series stalwart Karl Fairburne, dropped onto the Italian peninsula in advance of the Allied invasion. What starts out as an assassination mission quickly turns into a race to uncover a conspiracy that could end Allied hopes of retaking the continent for good… A Country DividedThe opening scenes of the trailer show a town caught in the midst of war, civilian belongings strewn across a usually sleepy market square. We really wanted to mix picture-postcard imagery with the creeping dread of something more sinister because this is what makes the Italian conflict so interesting. There were lots of factions fighting for the future of the country, and these play an important part in both the narrative and the gameplay! Gigantic Sniper SandboxesThat opening vista with all those iconic, red, Mediterranean rooftops? That’s just a small part of a beautiful coastal town which makes up just one region in one of the game’s earliest levels. Phew! Each campaign level is absolutely huge — many times bigger than those seen in Sniper Elite 3, and they already took hours to complete! Just to stress, the footage isn’t pre-rendered or taken from cutscenes. What you’re seeing in the trailer is taken from environments you’ll actually be playing in. That Rail(way) Gun!Did you spot Karl right at the end? Well done if you did — he’s definitely dwarfed by his surroundings! No doubt your eye was drawn to the huge viaduct in the distant background, too. Just like the earlier shots, this isn’t just set dressing, it’s taken from a real level and players actually have to get to the viaduct and then intercept that imposing railway gun. Whether you leave the viaduct still standing is, of course, up to you and your explosives. We hope that’s whet your appetite for more stealthy sniping action. Look out for more news soon! 18. We’re celebrating! 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved Wonder Boy series, which started with a simple but solid Arcade game developed by Escape (later known as Westone). The last game in the series was Monster World IV (1994) and it went silent for more than 20 years. Have you heard of it? The Return of a LegendWe’re so excited to say that we’ve been able to team up with the series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa (former Westone) and revive it with our new game Monster Boy, which launches on PS4 this year. As a fan of the classic games and the Metroidvania genre, it felt unreal to be able to work on a new game that brings back the spirit of the series in every way possible. We loved Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap for its transformation feature, so we took it as the biggest inspiration. Monster Boy continues the colorful, side-scrolling adventure tradition with a character who can transform into different animal forms to solve puzzles and proceed in a connected (open) game world. More Than a Spiritual SuccessorWith the help of Ryuichi Nishizawa and LAT corporation licensing, we’ve gained access to the whole library of characters, graphics assets, sounds, and music from the entire Wonder Boy series. While we’re creating a new experience targeting 1080p at 60 frames per second with hi-res 2D visuals, we’re happily bringing back our favorite monsters, music tracks, and features of the classic games. We’re working hard to deliver a game that you will be able to fully enjoy as a fan of the series but also if you never heard of it. OMG! Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru YamaneWhen we started the game production two years ago, we would’ve never believed we would be able to work with many personal childhood music heroes from Japan — we contacted them anyway and to our surprise they joined the team! The music production is led by Yuzo Koshiro himself, who is most famous for his music in Streets of Rage, Actraiser, Shinobi, and Ys. Furthermore, we worked with Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru Yamane, Keiki Kobayashi, Takeshi Yanagawa, and singer Haruka Shimotsuki. We believe music is so important for a great experience. There are a lot of original tracks in Monster Boy, but we also re-arranged the most famous music tracks of the classic series. Last but not least, music tracks get their finishing touches by a real instrument recording session. It’s so cool. We Can’t Wait to Share Monster Boy With YouWe’re planning to finish the game production in Q2 this year — please stay tuned for an exact release date in 2016. Will you celebrate with us? 20. With a near-infinite universe to explore, upcoming PS4 sci-fi epic No Man’s Sky is promising adventure without compare. However, think of any great space saga, and it’s at least partially defined by its cast of characters. With an intergalactic sandbox made up of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 unique planets, how on Earth is developer Hello Games planning to fill all those worlds with consistent story, dialogue, lore, and language? Well, as has generally proven the case when it comes to all things No Man’s Sky, it turns out the answer is pretty remarkable. Last week, I stopped by Hello’s compact Guildford HQ to find out more. “We’ve always talked about having factions in the game. It’s something we’ve always wanted. We had ideas on how we wanted that to fit in No Man’s Sky, but it’s taken us a while to get to the point where we’re happy enough to show it,†creator Sean Murray tells me, before launching into a demo. In short, here’s how it works. As you travel around the universe you’ll encounter individuals from several distinct races. As with everything else in the game, how they look and what they say is procedurally generated based on a set of variables defined by the Hello Games team. You’ll be able to trade with them, gain upgrades, learn more about the game’s lore, forge alliances and so forth. Sound straightforward? Well, not so fast. “The razor we use to cut features — to decide whether to implement them or not — is ‘does this thing encourage players to go out and explore the universe more?’,†explains Sean. “With NPCs in No Man’s Sky, you actually have to learn their language; they speak to you in their native tongue. The more you travel around the universe, the more you learn their language, and the more you can communicate with them.†Yes, you read that correctly. Hello Games has devised a number of distinct alien languages which, at the game’s outset, you will not be able to understand. However, as you explore the universe, discover relics, and talk to new NPCs, you’ll slowly start picking up their dialects. Sean goes on to explain that there is real value in developing relationships with these characters. If you make the effort to learn the language of a particular race and interact with them regularly, your standing with them will increase. If you’re tight with a particular race, they’ll duly give you preferential treatment — cheaper prices perhaps, or better equipment. Indeed, if you want to buy a better ship that might allow you to travel to more distant star systems, you’ll need to cozy up with these factions. Conversely, just as it would in real life, blundering into conversations without knowing the language can have negative consequences. Saying the wrong thing in a dialogue tree will likely result in your standing decreasing, or in the trader ripping you off, or in you losing a useful item simply out of confusion. Worse still, it might even end up in your new-found acquaintance attacking you. As has been hinted at in previous trailers, there are a number of ways to play No Man’s Sky. You can focus on exploration, on fighting, on survival, or on trading, and the NPC system feeds directly into this overarching framework. “The nice thing about it is that the NPCs are divided up into different races. So one race is perhaps more focused on exploration and science, and knowing that helps you decide how to best interact with them,†says Sean. “If you’re playing the game for exploration’s sake, you might want to focus on that race. But if you’re playing the game and all you want to do is kill things, there are more military-based races, so you might want to try and become friends with them.†As mentioned, there are a number of races in the game, and each speaks its own unique language. So, how long is it going to take the average player to wrap their tongues around a foreign dialect to the point of fluency? “It depends how much you’re seeking it out. Even if it’s all you do, you’re definitely talking hours and hours of play to learn a language. But I think most players will never become fluent, unless it’s specifically something they’re seeking out. “And there’s an element of fun to that! I like some of the silliness that ensues. “Say you were to go into a farming building, and there are some instructions on the wall written in an alien language telling you how to run the machinery. You could make sure you have the necessary language skills to make sense of it, or you could just run up to the console and randomly press buttons. Take the latter approach and the sign could read, ‘DEFINITELY DO NOT PRESS THE RED BUTTON,’ and you wouldn’t know it. That’s fun to me!†It’s probably important to stress that the interactions you have with these NPCs are reasonably light. No Man’s Sky is not a narrative-driven RPG with a script to follow — it’s procedural, and enormous on a scale that is impossible to properly comprehend. Don’t expect contained quest lines à la, say, Mass Effect. “You’re not sat there talking about philosophy, or discussing the weather for hours on end,†stresses Sean. “You are doing things like trading, or asking for technology, or sharing crafting recipes. “We’re not trying to fill the entire universe with dialogue trees and long-running dramas. That’s not what it’s about. “Having said that, being No Man’s Sky, there is a procedural element to your interactions. The AI you talk to will know the name of the planet you’re on and will reference it. They’ll reference wanting certain things based on the environment they’re in. They’ll know if it’s cold, or hot, or whatever. You’ll see a reasonable amount of variety — it’s not just pre-baked dialogue.†Before all of you who failed French class at school start getting a little nervous, No Man’s Sky is not expecting you to learn complex grammar, syntax, verb forms, pronunciation, and so forth. To take a simplistic view of it, the languages are more like codes to decipher — generally speaking, you’re simply replacing a word for a word. That was a deliberate decision, made in order to foster a sense of collaboration and coordination amongst the game’s community of players. If you figure out what a particular word means, you can paste it up online and share the knowledge. “Some of the languages — well, one in particular — is much harder to learn than the others,†Sean adds. “I think it will probably only be possible for people to decipher some of the dialogue by working together online. “We’re not trying to build something that people will go out and try to speak in the real world, like how I learned Klingon when I was a kid because I thought it would be a great ice-breaker. Turned out not to be the case! “I don’t expect to find people meeting at conventions and speaking one of our languages. That would be awful; please don’t do that! “It’s more about creating a really interesting reason for people to explore the game and get some really emergent results.†So, there you have it. Brush up on your social skills and learn some manners — they’ll likely be just as important as a quick trigger finger come June. View the full article
  21. Hello PlayStation.Blog! I’m Sean Murray from Hello Games, part of the team making No Man’s Sky, with some exciting news for you: No Man’s Sky is launching on June 21st! We’ve been a little quiet since we showed the game last year at E3, and it’s because we’ve been heads down and hard at work on development. It’s been a hectic but really exciting time for the team. Finishing a game is incredibly hard but lovely to watch as the pieces fall into place. In No Man’s Sky you can trade, fight, explore, and survive in a boundless, computer-generated universe. It’s a vast, open game, and always a hard one to demonstrate quickly, but recently we let some people from the press loose in No Man’s Sky. We pulled a few all-nighters this week in preparation! It was incredibly scary for us, but the moment we saw people start claiming discoveries, shouting and laughing at each other’s screens, we knew the hard work was paying off, and could collapse contentedly in the corner. They got to see new features like how to survive on hazardous planets and how to learn alien languages, and for the first time we showed off some alien races you will be able to communicate with. We’re excited for you all to play too, and we have some news a lot of you have been guessing at already. No Man’s Sky will have a full blown Blu-ray retail version! Sony has a history of working closely with indies, and this feels like some sort of culmination of that story. It means more people will have a chance to join us in exploring the universe than ever before. I can’t really imagine what it will feel like to walk into a shop and see our game on a shelf. I remember when I sat in the audience and saw Sony putting LittleBigPlanet on stage for the first time, I knew that it no longer mattered how many people worked on your game, and that not every game had to start with a 10-minute CGI cut scene. I can’t believe we’re about to follow in their footsteps as an even smaller studio with their game in real, actual shops. Most importantly, it gives us the best chance possible to keep supporting the game for free after it is released. No Man’s Sky will launch as a complete game in June, but there’s a lot we’d like to add post-launch, if we can. Thank you, as always, for everyone’s support and patience as we head towards the home straight. We can’t wait for everyone to start their own adventures! All the best, Sean View the full article
  22. Hi PlayStation Nation! Paragon Founder’s Packs go on sale March 14th and unlock Early Access beginning March 18th. By buying a Founder’s Pack, you’ll be able to play early, get an awesome value on in-game content, and help shape the future of the game. Your progress will be real, meaning we will not wipe accounts after March 18th. If you’d rather wait, Paragon will be in free Open Beta during the summer. Paragon is Epic Games’ new MOBA that puts you in the fight with explosive action, direct third-person control, and deep strategic choice. Players choose from an ever-expanding roster of unique Heroes, earn cards to customize their abilities, and lead their teams to victory. All Heroes Free, All Cards Earned By PlayingParagon is designed so that all players can compete and win without ever having to spend money. All Heroes are free, and cards can only be earned by playing the game. The game will never be pay-to-win, meaning we will never sell gameplay-affecting items. We will sell cosmetic items (skins, emotes), boosts, and other convenience items, along with Paid Early Access, in order to make money. We’re taking this approach because we believe that competitive games need to be fair for all players. Why Early Access and Founder’s Packs?Paragon is still in development. The game is missing features, and some of the content is placeholder. We don’t yet have a lot of features to make it easier to understand for new players, and some systems (for example: cards and deck building) require a lot of patience. Yet, we really want gamers to be able to opt-in and be here with us from the start, to give feedback and help shape the game. As a way of saying thanks, we’re trying to make Founder’s Packs an insanely good value. If you’re interested in Paragon, buying a Founder’s Pack will get you in-game content at a huge discount from normal prices. During the Early Access Season, we’ll release new (Free!) Heroes every three weeks, hold community events, and offer daily and weekly rewards. Founder’s Packs will cost $19.99, and include access to the game, skins, boosts, and other cosmetic items you can unlock by playing. Challenger Packs ($59.99) and Master Packs ($99.99) will include a huge number of skins, unlockable items, boosts, a unique skin, and a Founder’s Pack to give to a friend. We’ll be sharing complete details soon. If you’d like to support Paragon, buy a Founder’s Pack on March 14th and jump in early. If you’d rather wait, Paragon will be in free Open Beta in Summer 2016. If you choose to wait, you can also head over to Paragon.com, sign up for the beta, and have a chance to play in free beta weekends. Finally, if you want to learn more about Paragon, check out Ryan Clements’ blog post. We hope to see you in the fight! View the full article
  23. Hi, we’re Oasis Games, the first publishing partner of Sony Computer Entertainment Shanghai (SCES). As Chinese developers, we are working with Sony to bring local games to players in the United States and beyond. There are lots of game developers here and China is predicted to have a high growth in console gaming — but for this to happen local developers have to have a way to reach gamers outside of China. That’s where we come in. By hooking up with the PlayStation team, Oasis is able to bring new games to players like you. And we’re excited about this! What does this mean for you? Well, for starters, it means our game of adventure and exploration, Koi, will be the very first game developed in China that will come to PS4. (Also, with Koi already winning awards it’s also the first successful indie game created in the city of Tianjin, China! That’s two historic firsts!) A Little Fish in a PondKoi is a game about a fish. And a pond. But it’s not a fishing game. It’s a game where you play as the fish! Our game has a rather philosophical slant. Koi asks players if they can find happiness and peace of mind by bringing purity to a lotus pond. Rather than focusing on action, the game follows the introspective journey of a lone koi fish. Separated from your owner, you find that your once tranquil pond has been transformed into a world of darkness and danger. What was once beautiful has turned deadly. Even the friendly Light Fish have become predatory Dark Fish that will attack anything that comes near. The game has puzzle solving and item collecting, with an eye toward bringing you, the player, to a calm and happy frame of mind as you restore the pond to its natural state. By guiding our koi hero, you can purify the underwater world as you navigate obstacles that block your path, solve puzzles, and open flowers to restore the water’s health. Accomplishing these seemingly small tasks can turn threats into beauty. A predator fish can turn back into a harmless friend and spiked branches that block your path can once again become healthy green leaves. As you play, the story will emerge naturally as you swim around in pretty environments. While swimming through turbulent currents and murky waters, you’ll find additional layers and side quests such as collecting puzzle pieces. You can memorize melodies hidden inside barren branches and use these to restore the ecosystem. All the while, the hypnotic, piano-based score created by the Chinese artist Zeta immerses you in the watery world, leaving your mind free to explore how the realm of the pond is similar and different to our own. Come On In, the Water’s FineWe will be showing Koi for the first time at GDC Play in San Francisco — if you’re attending, please stop by! We are honored to be the first Chinese publisher on PS4 and we’d love to share our game with you, whether at GDC or this Spring when the game launches. View the full article
  24. Enter the Gungeon is done. Well, basically done. There is still work to do: bug fixing and balancing, and planning for updates — but we are at the end of the tunnel and our gunfight dungeon crawler will be available on PlayStation 4 on April 5. When I look at our game in its finished form, I feel incredibly proud of what our small team has been able to accomplish over the last two years. The game is so much bigger than our original vision, but it is also much better, more robust, and with more variety. We know that variety is king in a game like ours, so when coming up with ideas for guns, we did our best to eliminate the word “no†from the discussion. We’ve tried to pack the game with as much fun loot as we could. Enter the Gungeon will launch with 190 player-usable guns, ranging from pistols and rifles, to laser and beam weaponry, to much crazier weaponry as well. We have a gun that shoots sharks, a gun that shoots bees, a unicorn horn that shoots rainbows — there is a gun that can turn enemies into chickens, and another that might turn them into snakes. You can spread oil all over the floor with the Fossilized Gun, light it on fire using the Flare Gun, and put it out using the Water Gun, then freeze the water using the Freeze Ray. The loot you find in Enter the Gungeon isn’t just guns though, there are 200 items as well that can provide permanent buffs or temporary advantages. You might get the Shock Rounds that create an arc of electricity between the shots you fire, or the Heavy Bullets that make all of your bullets larger and slower, but more powerful. You might find a cardboard box to hide in and get the jump on enemies, or a roll of duct tape that binds two guns together. You’ll probably be very thankful for that extra firepower when dealing with the challenges the Gungeon will throw at you. It is you and your arsenal against 85 different breeds of enemies (plus mimics) and 20 murderous bosses. That includes a unique final boss for each of the four main characters that takes place in the past. Including co-op, there are 7 ways to “win†the game. Along the way you’ll run into Gungeoneers that came before you. If you rescue them, they may prove grateful and open up a shop, lend a hand deeper in the Gungeon, or challenge your skill for a prize. In most runs you’ll buy items from the local shopkeeper, but I’d warn against vandalism or stealing. There are more than 15 characters to find in the depths, and another five mysterious shrines to pray to, providing a variety of effects. When we started the game we thought to ourselves, “We’ll be done in a year for sure!†I can only laugh at our optimism, now that we are nearly two years into the project. I want to take a moment to thank Devolver Digital and the team at PlayStation for being so incredibly supportive of Dodge Roll and Enter the Gungeon. We wouldn’t be here without you! Enter the Gungeon will be released on April 5, 2016, and we really hope you like it! View the full article
  25. We’re proud to announce that Refactor, the world’s first Tetroidvania, is coming to PS4! What is a Tetroidvania?Taking elements from classic metroidvanias such as Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Refactor blends them with the falling block puzzle genre to create an entirely unique physics-based puzzle platforming experience. The standard formula of a metroidvania is based off of the concept of an open world with gated progression. In Refactor you play as a tetromino, a four-block shape popularized by Tetris, with each of the shapes being tied to abilities that change the way you traverse and interact with the world. For example, the square shape can be used to combat enemies or the line shape to leap great distances. These shapes can be further augmented by special abilities found throughout the world. While these powers are fairly standard for the metroidvania genre, we’ve turned it up a notch and have given you the ability to rearrange the map in a puzzle-like manner. Turning the World Upside DownSet in a world that is a puzzle itself, you can literally turn the world upside down by rearranging the map. The rooms that make up the map can be reordered, moved around and even rotated, all in real time. It is up to you to construct new pathways to previously inaccessible areas, to solve mind-bending puzzles, and to uncover secrets in the world of Refactor. Refactor is a game about experimentation and discovery; there is no “right†solution to every problem. It is up to you to choose how to rearrange the world and to find the most potent combinations of abilities. Given the freedom the world provides, we’ve been consistently surprised by the unique and effective solutions people achieve in Refactor. So pick up the controller and make your own mark on the world! StoryEvery day in the world of Refactor, thousands of puzzle pieces are created for the explicit purpose of playing “The Game.†Requiring perfection, only perfect puzzle pieces are selected for use and those who are imperfect are shunned by society and decommissioned. Thrown into this hostile environment, it is up to a couple of misfits to find their place in this unbending society. Play as two misshapen characters who team up to create a completed tetromino. Explore the world of Refactor to unlock new upgrades and powers. Defeat the gatekeepers to acquire new shapes and augments, each granting you a new ability. Discover where you fit in, or take command and make your own place in the world. A Long JourneyRefactor began life as Tetropolis in 2013, having been born from a single word: Tetroidvania. The core concept was simply playing as a tetromino with the different shapes bestowing different powers. However, simply playing yet another reskinned metroidvania didn’t excite us. It simply wasn’t enough. We eventually came to the idea of allowing the player to manipulate the world around them as giant tetromino-shaped rooms. This gave people the ability to explore the world in a way no one has ever attempted. After some spectacular feedback at various showings such as GDC and PAX, we honed our vision into Refactor and we’re tremendously excited for people finally to get their hands on it.
