Welcome back to PlayStation Underground, our online show about video games! Today, we sit down with branching horror game Until Dawn on PS4. What happens when you combine lingering tragedies, a desolate cabin, and one jumpy gamer? You’re about to find out. Until Dawn gives players the power to influence the gory narrative at nearly every turn. The fate of each character is heavily impacted by player choice, including who in this haunting story emerges alive — and who meets an untimely end. At least one thing is certain: never take a bath in a creepy cabin. It’s not worth it! You can find that out for yourself when Until Dawn launches on PS4 next week, August 25th. Let us know what you think in the comments, and remember that we’ll be back soon with more Underground in the weeks to come. Enjoy the show! View the full article

It’s time! Minutes ago, Treyarch and Activision officially kicked off Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta on PS4. Seeing that this is officially a Really Big Deal, we wanted to create a definitive resource for PS4 gamers looking to jump in. See below for crucial details cultivated by the fine folks at Treyarch and Activision. Beta Content How big is the Beta file? The Beta is packed with a lot of content, weighing it at approximately 12.5 GB. Download times will vary based on location, server traffic, and connection speed. Will any Campaign or Zombies content be available in the Beta? No, the Black Ops 3 Beta is specifically focused on competitive multiplayer. What maps will be included in the Black Ops 3 Beta? Hunted: This big game hunting lodge is situated beneath a waterfall in the lush mountains of Ethiopia, where rugged terrain opens up to long sightlines and a stealthy underwater pathway. Combine: Set in the remote Egyptian Sahara, this vertical farming and sustainability research facility plays fast and frenetic with tight interiors, an open middle and a dangerous flank path. Evac: An abandoned emergency evacuation zone atop an overgrown rooftop in the middle of Singapore’s flooded quarantine zone. What game modes will be supported in the Beta? The Black Ops 3 Beta will include the following game modes: Team Deathmatch Hardpoint Demolition Domination Kill Confirmed Capture the Flag Search and Destroy What are Specialists, and how do they impact competitive play? Specialists are elite soldiers being introduced in Black Ops 3, each with their own distinctive personality, look, voice, weapons, and abilities. Each Specialist’s weapon or ability can be earned multiple times during a match and deliver critical tactical opportunities, whether it be via a boost in agility, a powerful explosive bow, or more. What Specialists will be included in the Beta? During the span of the beta and as you progress, you’ll have a chance to try any of the five Specialists already announced, as well as two brand-new characters: Battery and Spectre. On Day One, players will begin to have access to: Battery: Battery operates ahead of the front lines. Her War Machine fires salvos of bouncing grenades, while her Kinetic Armor can deflect enemy bullets when active… though she remains vulnerable to headshots and non-bullet damage. Ruin: A reckless infantry soldier who prefers to surprise his enemies. He rushes into battle with his Overdrive ability, and can deliver a devastating shockwave with his Gravity Spikes. Outrider: A hunter-tracker who stalks her prey from afar before moving in for the kill. Use her Vision Pulse ability to reveal the location of nearby enemies or her Sparrow compound bow with its deadly explosive bolts. Prophet: Prefers to disrupt opponents’ tactics before moving in for the kill. His Tempest is a charge-shot weapon that delivers chain electricity to all nearby enemies. He can confuse enemies with his Glitch ability, which flashes him back to a previous position. Seraph: Known for extreme focus and discipline in combat. Her high-caliber Annihilator revolver fires powerful rounds with increased bullet penetration taking out enemies with one shot. She’s also able to earn Scorestreaks more quickly using her Combat Focus ability, which triggers a brief bonus multiplier. Nomad: Prefers to turn the environment against his enemies. Case in point: His H.I.V.E. weapon, which deploys trap pods filled with deadly nano-drones. When near death, Nomad can recover using his Rejack ability. Will I be able to use Create-A-Class in the Beta? Yes, you’ll be able to customize your equipment loadouts across multiple classes in the Beta. How does the Weapon Paintshop work? Available in the Beta, this new feature enables players to create custom graphics with up to 64 layers. Each side of the weapon can be completely unique. As the Beta progresses, will Treyarch roll in any new features, modes, or the like? Certain surprises may or may not be in store. Let’s just say that you’ll want to play the Beta through its entire run from August 19th to August 23rd. What will be the Level cap in the Black Ops 3 beta? The Beta will kick off with a cap of Level 28, and will expand over the course of the Beta. Beta Gameplay What unique gameplay features distinguish Black Ops 3’s competitive multiplayer from other Call of Duty titles? Black Ops III features an all-new movement system that empowers players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, power slides, and fast mantling capabilities in a multitude of combinations. With the “guns-up†philosophy, players maintain full control of their weapon at all times and have 360-degrees of motion through all maneuvers. Treyarch is also introducing an all-new Specialist system that will debut nine elite Specialists to choose from in multiplayer – each with their own look, personality, voice and battle-hardened weapons and abilities. Each weapon and ability is designed to make your Specialist a unique force to be reckoned with. The Beta will feature eight of the nine Specialists that will be found in the final game. What more can you say regarding Black Ops 3’s “Combat Movement Combat Movements are chainable movement styles that empower Black Ops 3 players to maneuver around their environment in dynamic ways. These abilities draw from the power meter on the HUD. A brief list of examples include: Thrust Jumps: Press and hold X to add additional verticality to your jump. If you press and hold for a short duration, you’ll gain extra air but won’t fully deplete your power meter; if you press and hold for a longer beat, you’ll gain maximum verticality but fully drain your power meter. You can also feather the X button for a bit of extra distance. Power Slide: While running (press R3), you can press the Circle button to slide into or out of combat at a high velocity. Wall Run: Jump onto a wall at an angle to initiate a Wall Run. Your gun is always ready to fire at a moment’s notice. Combat Movements are often more effective when chained together in creative ways that reflect your combat situation, meaning you can go from a Thrust Jump to a Power Slide to a Wall Run in order to adjust to incoming threats or targets. What resolution and framerate will the Black Ops 3 Beta support on PS4? The Black Ops 3 Beta on PS4 will support a native resolution of 1080p and a target framerate of 60 frames per second. Accessing the Beta How do I participate in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta on PS4? To lock in your immediate access, you must have a beta access code. The easiest way to get a beta access code is to pre-order Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on PS4, or pre-purchase the game through the PlayStation Store. Each retailer will have a limited supply of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta codes, and will be available while quantities last. You can pre-order online and find information about participating retailers by visiting CallofDuty.com/BlackOps3/Buy. How long will be the Beta be active on PS4? The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta will run from Wednesday, August 19th through Sunday, August 23rd. Look for more information to be released throughout the week. Will my progress from the Beta carry over to retail? No, progress will not carry over from the Beta. Treyarch’s focus is making the final game the best and most stable experience it can be and they will be working on balancing and other fixes leading up to launch. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 PS4 | $59.99 Pre-order for Beta access Where do I redeem my Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta code? Head over to CallofDuty.com/BlackOps3Beta and follow the instructions on the page to reserve your spot in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta. You will be required to log in with a Call of Duty account and enter your Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta code. If you do not have a Call of Duty account, you can create a free one. After creating your free account, you will be sent an account verification email to the address you provide. What’s the difference between my Beta code that I received and my Beta token? Your pre-order Beta code reserved your spot for the Beta and is redeemed at CallofDuty.com/BlackOps3Beta. Once you have registered, a Beta token will be emailed to you on a rolling basis beginning on August 19th. This Beta token will allow you to download the Beta from the platform you have designated in the registration process. I’ve pre-purchased my copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 through the PlayStation Store. Where can I locate my code? You don’t need one! Code redemption is not necessary for pre-purchases through PlayStation Store. You are automatically validated to participate in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta. When the Beta opens on August 19th, you will be able to download it immediately. I’ve pre-ordered my copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 through a participating retailer. Where can I locate my Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta code? In most cases, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta code will be printed on the retail receipt or sent to you via email in an online receipt. If you did not receive a beta code, can’t locate your code, or your code is illegible, please contact your retailer to recover it. I entered my Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Beta code, but it didn’t work. What should I do? Please verify that you are entering the correct code. If you are receiving an error message stating that the code you entered is invalid or that your code has already been redeemed, please contact Activision support. Is the Beta available worldwide? Availability of the Black Ops 3 Beta will vary by territory. How can I give feedback and report bugs to make Black Ops 3 better? We will be posting a survey link on callofduty.com once the Beta starts. We welcome feedback and encourage everyone to share. The more feedback, the better. Will the servers ever go down for maintenance? Because this is a Beta, periodic maintenance may be necessary throughout the gameplay period. Please follow @Treyarch on Twitter for updates. Hi everyone. Wow, what an incredible few months. First of all, and on behalf of everyone here at Rocksteady Studios, I’d like to say a massive “thank you†for your support in making Batman: Arkham Knight the success it has been. The team have poured blood, sweat and tears into this, the final chapter in our Arkham trilogy. But we’re not done yet. So what’s new this month? Well, if you have the Season Pass, you’ve already experienced the “Matter of Family†Batgirl DLC, and today we’re continuing with new content and launching our Tim Burton-inspired “1989 Movie Batmobile Pack.†You’ll get to drive this iconic car on custom racetracks that take inspiration from both of the Tim Burton movies with two bespoke challenges for each track. Plus, if you’ve managed to clear the streets of the Arkham Knight’s drone tanks, you’ll be able to take the car onto the streets of Gotham City. Also included in today’s drop is the “Bat-Family Skin Pack†with new skins for Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and Catwoman. And there’s lots of great stuff still to come. On September 1st we’ll be launching the first of our “Crime Fighter Challenge Packs†and soon after that, another legendary Batmobile takes to the streets of Gotham as we continue to deliver new content every month. Thank you again for your support and keep letting us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter. View the full article

Volume is ready for PS4, and here’s your first look at the game’s launch trailer. Many of you may recognize the actor in the live-action sequences as Charlie McDonnell from YouTube (Charlieiscoollike). He also does a fantastic job voicing Rob Locksley in the game. Charlie is joined in Volume by Danny Wallace, who won a BAFTA for his performance in my previous game Thomas Was Alone. We’ve also got movie star Andy Serkis. Andy… oh, that feels awkward to call him by his first name… Mr. Serkis? Sir? Yes, let’s go with Mr. Serkis. Anyway, he plays big baddy Guy Gisborne and I still can’t believe he agreed to participate. For those who know nothing about Volume (And thank you for your interest in reading this far!), it’s a stealth action game with a robust level editor. We’ve got a 100-level campaign voiced by all the talent mentioned above (and a few surprise guest stars). The story is a spin on the Robin Hood legend, as Locksley takes over a virtual training simulator and broadcasts the blueprints to commit crimes against the corrupt elite of England. The reason I mentioned Volume’s level editor is robust is because everything you see in the game was made using it. All those tools are available to players for uploading their own content and sharing with friends. Yes, all the tools. Every gadget in the game, tile type, environmental hazard, enemy, and the Volume’s entire color palette are available. And to reward players who create the best content, the game also includes a rating system so community supported maps rise to the top of the charts. I’m looking forward to watching you play the game on Twitch during launch week. I’ll be lurking in your streams. Is that creepy? Maybe a little creepy, but I’m doing it anyway. Can’t wait to see how you enjoy the game! View the full article

Everyone here at VooFoo Studios is very proud to announce the arrival of our latest title, Pure Hold’em. Pure Hold’em will be throwing down the chips today in the United States for $19.99. Pure Hold’em is our third game in the Pure series and will be the very first Texas Hold’em poker game to grace PS4. We personally can’t wait to share with you what we believe to be the most realistic poker simulation game to date. If you’ve experienced our games in the past, you’ll know that our artists push the limits when it comes to photo-realistic visuals, and Pure Hold’em is no exception. From the hustle and bustle of the casino floor, to the high stakes tension of the executive penthouse, Pure Hold’em will unleash the poker master in everyone. Total immersion doesn’t just stop with the visuals in Pure Hold’em. Use the DualShock 4 touchpad to skilfully manipulate the cards in your hand, look around the table to view your opponents, and attempt to analyze their strategies. Every element of Pure Hold’em has been created to make this the ultimate poker experience. With a total of six highly detailed tables, players will work their way up from the casino floor and the Jack’s table playing for small change, right up to the high stakes Masters table situated in the opulent top-floor penthouse. Pure Hold’em supports a full roster of online options ranging from an Open Play poker fix to a privately hosted tournament, played between you and up to seven of your Hold’em friends. If customization is your thing, you are certainly catered for, with a huge array of table cloth designs and colors. Add to this a choice of 3 different card designs and 3 chip sets, and you really can make the game your own. If that wasn’t enough, look out for additional chipset packs in the upcoming months. These, including the upcoming Vortex, Paradise City and King’s Ransom sets; the latter of which was named by the winner of our recent community competition. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response we’ve received from fans since Pure Hold’em was announced and now we’re very pleased to release it to the world and to ask you one final question… …are you all in? Join us on our Twitch channel this Saturday for a special Play the devs stream, where we’ll be giving away some Pure Hold’em game codes. Keep an eye on Twitter this week for further details. Includes more than 70 upgradable weapons, perks, and stratagems and a bonus Weapons Pack (also available for sale). More Democracy! Now citizens of Super-Earth can proudly show their support with the Helldivers PS4 Dynamic Theme (also available for sale). More Freedom! Helldivers Super-Earth Ultimate Edition also contains the PS4 Blu-ray, PS3, and PS Vita/PS TV digital games and the Turning up the Heat and Masters of the Galaxy expansions. Fight with fellow Helldivers across platforms to protect Super-Earth! As with all game development, the road to completing Helldivers has been filled with struggle, success, and learning brand new things (Like developing for cross play, cross save, and multiple platforms at the same time… phew!) but it’s been a lot of fun. It leaves us with many stories to tell but we can only fit a small part here. We even started filling an entire wall with fantastic community comments! One of the more memorable days was of course, launch day. We were setting up to livestream the game while having a few good beers and chatting with the viewers. We had a blast seeing Helldivers truly come to life with everyone finally contributing to the Galactic Campaign together, and eventually we decided it might be fun if we joined a random player in our game. It turned out that our new found friend was also streaming his game live all the way from New Zealand. Here we were playing with someone from the very other side of the globe! Here’s some other great stories from our designer, Patrik Lasota during development and how a few hilarious bugs appeared: Scared of Heights — we got a report from QA (Quality Assurance) that if your character was injured, and walked on one of the roots spanning the chasms in the desert environment, it would trigger the falling VO, causing the Helldiver to scream for his life as though he was falling to his death. Hilarious when the Helldiver is standing on the edge of a ravine! (footage captured during alpha testing prior to the game’s launch) Minidiver — we had a bug for about half a year but didn’t discover until QA pointed it out. The Helldiver would shrink if you entered the hellpod on the bridge, and then exited again. We thought QA was messing with us — I mean, that’s a silly bug and how would it even happen? Well, it turns out that QA had indeed found a bug and we scratched our head for a good while until we realized that we were doing some animation tricks to the Helldiver to get him to fit in the pod. The result was hilarious, making the Helldiver character almost half the original size. A good many laughs were had. Needless to say, we’ve ironed out a few kinks along the way and we’re excited to launch the most amazing Helldivers experience today with Super-Earth Ultimate Edition! Are you ready to step up and take your place among the Helldivers? Get out there soldier, and fight for Super-Earth! View the full article

Two game creators. Four years of development. One shared obsession. The Bridge is finally available on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita tomorrow. Not Exactly Newton’s Theory of GravityThe Bridge opens to a scene where an unnamed character is sleeping under a tree. At this point, the only available action is to rotate the direction of gravity — the common theme throughout The Bridge. Like with Isaac Newton, an apple falls from the tree to wake our sleeping protagonist, and the journey begins. The Bridge is an unconventional platformer (if you would even call it that), because there is no jump button. Instead, you must navigate through the puzzle structures by only walking and applying the unusual mechanic of gravity rotation. But the gravity manipulation doesn’t stop there — throughout The Bridge you will encounter gravitational vortexes, inverted gravity, objects having gravitational vectors that are different than your own, and more. M. C. Escher’s Impossible WorldSome have described The Bridge as “M. C. Escher: The Game.†Escher is the artist who created famous works around impossible reality and gravity such as Waterfall and Relativity. Whenever I look at these drawings, I imagine myself walking around inside of these mysterious and surreal worlds. I knew that a video game was the only medium where this could truly be achieved, so I created The Bridge in the spirit of an M. C. Escher drawing in order to bring these impossible worlds to life. Hand Drawn, Black-and-White Artwork Mario Castañeda was the sole artist of The Bridge, hand drawing the entire game in a black-and-white lithographic art style. When I started the project, I had a clear vision in that I wanted the entire game to look and feel like you were inside of an M. C. Escher drawing. I felt that having authentic visuals in Escher’s classic monochromatic style was the only way to truly marry the impossible architecture that comprises the puzzles in The Bridge with the surreal visual aesthetics. When Mario showed me his initial mock-up for the protagonist, I knew that the style was perfect and that we both had the exact same vision for the game, and we spent the next four years creating it. Critically-AcclaimedThroughout The Bridge’s development, it has received over 16 awards and nominations, including Best Gameplay Winner and Best Art Direction Winner at the Indie Game Challenge, Best Art Winner and Best Gameplay nominee at the Unity awards, in addition to being featured in the PAX 10, IGF, IndieCade, and more. The Bridge will be available tomorrow on August 18th, and it will feature cross buy and cross save support, and include shared Trophies between PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. It’s been an incredible journey for Mario and myself to turn our dream for a game into a reality and finally bring it to PlayStation platforms. I’m really happy that you all can be a part of that. If you have any questions, I’ll respond in the comments section. View the full article

Every great adventure is made up of legendary tales. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection packs three thrilling adventures into one amazing collection. Nathan Drake has grown from man to legend as his story permeated our studio DNA and PlayStation lore. Here’s a glimpse of that transformation. The exchange seen here between Sully and Drake is a defining moment in the Uncharted story. Sir Francis Drake’s motto “Greatness from small beginnings†has a special place in Nathan Drake’s backstory and frames his epic journeys. He achieved greatness from humble beginnings with a lot of help along the way. Sully became a father-figure and mentor of sorts for Nate and that relationship served as a rock in the often wild, always adventurous saga that you’ll play in Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is the culmination of years of hard work at our studio that has been lovingly rebuilt by the team at Bluepoint Games. It’s incredible to watch Drake run, leap, and shoot on the PS4 with enhanced graphics and gameplay. Capturing those white-knuckle, trademark Uncharted moments has never been more fun than via the new Photo Mode tools built into the collection. Various improvements in lighting, rendering, texture mapping, and dynamic audio mean all three games are looking and sounding better than ever. New Trophies and modes such as our Explorer, Speed Run, and Brutal Modes will invite long time adventurers to replay these classics while welcoming newcomers to discover Uncharted greatness. Explorer Mode is an all-new mode for beginners where combat difficulty is reduced greatly. Speed Run Mode adds a timer that allows players to track their gameplay time against their friends as they play sections of the game. Brutal Difficulty Mode is the ultimate challenge as the gameplay will be more punishing than Crushing Difficulty (unlocked after beating Crushing Difficulty in the same game). You can even play all three single-player games in the collection as Doughnut Drake (or any one of over sixty-five other characters skins) if you’re so inclined. A lot of new polish, hard work, and love were put into making this the ultimate Uncharted collection. If you want to see what Nathan Drake and his crew are up to next, you’ll only be able to get access to the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End multiplayer beta by purchasing Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. The game arrives October 9th, 2015. Uncover the legend and pre-order today. View the full article

I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but the choices you make in Until Dawn carry extreme and sometimes deadly consequences. You, the player, take on the role of eight teenagers and make snap decisions that will determine who survives. As fans of the survival horror genre, we worked with MoFilm on a short series of live action films to illustrate the gravity of the decisions you’ll be forced to make in the game. In each of these films, equal attention was focused on the exact moment the characters are faced with a tough decision, as is on the potential outcomes they must weigh. For better or worse, every action has a different consequence. The two films will explore scenarios inspired by Until Dawn. Part 1 of 2 in our mini-series is called “Choices,†and what better way to tell this story than by having the film be interactive! Without giving too much away, we set out to create a classic killer scenario that most of us have seen in other films with different outcomes. The main difference with ours is that your decision has a direct impact on the final outcome. Question is, what decisions will you make? And will you survive? The interactive experience is only compatible on your desktop From the “Choices†director, Torben: “We took our inspiration from the many choices presented in the game and from its cinematic style. We want to give the viewer a feeling of what it’s like being caught up with a killer on the loose — having to make life threatening decisions on the run. Most people can relate to watching a horror and disapprove of the decisions made by the main protagonists. Now you can actually have a say in them — and carry full responsibility if the protagonist gets away or is killed in a brutal way…†The second film takes on a darker, ominous twist on Robert Frost’s classic poem — “The Road Not Taken.†Head here to watch part two of the Mofilm series, being hosted by our partners at GameStop. From the director of “The Road Not Taken,†Lloyd Choi: “I’ve always been in love with games that you can’t play alone in the dark. The idea of creating an extended spin-off of the world around Until Dawn definitely excited me, and decided I wanted to try something a little different than the typical game trailer. “Since Until Dawn is based around the concept of choice (and the tension around it), I immediately thought of Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Takenâ€, which I thought would create an interesting tone and backdrop paired with visceral and frightening images. The poem is often misinterpreted, and is really more complex than people think. “It’s really about how no matter which direction you choose, that’s the choice you make, leading to a life lived regardless of this road or the other road. And in hindsight, that will be the only way you know and you’ll look back on that decision to take this road as meaningful and important. “But all roads are really the same. It’s not really an empowering poem of choosing your unique destiny that others haven’t taken; it’s meaning is more bleak and bittersweet. And I found that perfect for Until Dawn.†Hopefully you’ll be at peace with the choices you make in Until Dawn when it launches on August 25th! For more info on Until Dawn, head over to the official site for more. View the full article

I am Bread is coming to PS4 on August 25th — we’re so excited, we decided to tell you all of our deepest, darkest secrets. We already told you all about the game’s development in a previous blog post, so for this, we wanted to let you know about some little things that we hid beneath the surface of the extremely complex story of the game. When we were making I am Bread many moons ago (Okay, it seems like forever, but it was actually last year), we decided to be very clever and to hide some Easter Eggs in the game. Everyone loves them, don’t they? Come on, admit it. Sometimes though, it’s easy to miss them when you’re racing through a game. And sometimes the developers hide things so well that nobody notices. We want to make sure that when you played through it, you didn’t miss the best bits. If you don’t want spoilers, don’t scroll down. Seriously. It will ruin your day, and no one wants that. 1.) In the padded cell tutorial level, climb up to the window and move in close. You should be able to hear something rather horrifying coming from the next room. Similarly, if you return to the tutorial level after completing the game, you’ll get an even bigger surprise! Don’t blame us for the nightmares, though, we did warn you. 2.) You can probably tell from looking at pretty much every picture within the game that we like cats. Love them. I mean, who doesn’t? You’d have to be some kind of monster to not like cats. What you may not know is that the cat featured in many of the pictures is a real cat. Her name is Marge, and she belongs to Luke, designer of I am Bread. 3.) The game had a couple of other names before the final title was chosen. Its original name was ‘â€Loaf Toast.†Look in the fridge, and you can see a little memento of this that we kept. Sentimental, eh? We were also going to call the game “The Walking Bread,†but our lawyer laughed and kicked us out of his office. We used that title for a Trophy instead. 4.) We named many of the products in the game after people who work in the studio. The whisky bottle is named after our QA tester, Malford — the crest is his bass guitar. Ali’s Power-Up lager is named after Charles Ali, our developer. Uncle Jack’s Dark Ale’s name comes from Jack, our 3d Artist. Mo (developer), Murillo (another developer), Luke (designer), Oliver (nuisance/genius), and Andrew (server whiz) are also featured in the game. 5.) Players of our other games may recognize the game’s main character, and the place that the game is set. Barnardshire. Heard that before? Okay, we’ll spell it out. Mr. Murton from I am Bread is Bob from Surgeon Simulator. That arm that you see on one of the levels… well, you all know who that is. I am Bread is actually the prequel to Surgeon Simulator. If you look closely, you can see all kinds of little references to this. 6.) Zero Gravity mode was originally a bug… but we liked it so much, we turned it into a feature. Aren’t all of the best games made that way? 7.) There is an alternate ending to the petrol station level when you beat it in zero g mode. You will love it. Especially if you’re geeky like us. 8.) I am Bread is actually based on a true story. Seriously. One of these may not be true… can you guess which one? View the full article

Hey PlayStation gamers, Simon here from Spearhead Games! I thought I would give you all a glimpse into the project our small Montreal-based studio has been working on. For the last few months, we’ve been putting together a game called Stories: The Hidden Path. Stories is an action-RPG set in a vibrant universe filled with floating islands, majestic airships, and flamboyant magic. Our hero is Reynardo, a sky corsair in a bit of a bind. As the sole survivor of the vanguard, he is the last line of defense against the mighty imperial armada about to overtake the entire realm. Reynardo fights against impossible odds, knowing that the fate of everything he holds dear rests on his shoulders. We’re building Stories to feel like an enchanted book with a different tale to tell each time you open it. Every choice you make in the game affects the storyline in real-time, and the narrator adapts his tale dynamically to reflect your course of action. With beautiful illustrations at every turn of the page, Stories will have you diving deeper into the narrative nuances each time you play. We want to make Stories more than a traditional action-RPG, so we’re crafting a fresh storytelling system that we think will bring extra charm — and maybe even a few surprises — to our newest title. We’re super-proud of how the game is turning out and very excited to share more with you all in the coming months. If you’re attending PAX Prime, swing by booth #6912 to try out Stories: The Hidden Path! View the full article

When we first started working on Adventures of Pip, we knew we had something great but didn’t know how we were going to get the game funded and have it see the light of day. We worked on it every chance we got. Marc Gomez (Game Designer) and Cathy Camacho (Senior Producer) were busy with two other projects; Garth Smith (Lead Programmer) would work on the prototype whenever he had downtime. Over time it became clear that without a dedicated team the project would never get done. It would have been a huge shame since it was a problem of finances and not of fun factor. We ran an initial Kickstarter but didn’t succeed. It wasn’t until our second Kickstarter that the community really embraced the game, and we started to see how Pip could come to life. Coverage from Game Grumps/Steam Train gave us a huge lift in backers. Another way that we boosted our Kickstarter campaign was by teaming up with other developers. Graphite Lab (Hive Jump), One More Level (Warlocks), and Alonso Martin (Heart Forth Alicia) all linked arms with us, and that mutual support helped all of us hit our goals. It didn’t hurt that old friends from WayForward and Yacht Club Games reached out on Twitter to their backers as well. With the help of 2,578 backers, we exceeded our Kickstarter goal! That allowed us to add more muscle to the team. We brought on classic gaming programmer and former CTO of Left Field Productions, James Higgins to manage the ports and Assistant Director of Shantae & the Pirate’s Curse, Jeff Luke, to lead level design. We also brought on Eddie Moreno and Eleazar Del Rosario of WayForward to beef up the art team. With all these powerhouses, we were ready to kick some butt! We always wanted to play Pip on PS4 but we initially didn’t think it would be possible because we didn’t have dev kits. When the community spoke up and really pushed for PS4 support, we knew we at least had to try, so we added PS4 to our stretch goals. Amazingly, Sony reached out to us to assist. We were blown away by their generosity. Even more, Sony invited us to PlayStation Experience. We were right across the aisle from our friends at Yacht Club Games and shared outlets with Young Horses (Octodad). As people stopped by to play Pip, we could see what they liked and didn’t like about the game. We used that feedback to improve the game, and we were glad that the community wasn’t shy about sharing their opinion. With the all the hard work from the team and the support from both our Kickstarter community and Sony, we’re proud to announce that Adventures of Pip will be available to download on August 18th on PS4. We have also been selected to showcase the game in the PAX 10 booth at this year’s PAX Prime event in Seattle. We couldn’t have achieved this dream without the enthusiasm and generous support of the community. With Adventures of Pip becoming our first PS4 title, we just can’t wait to get it in the hands of the community that helped us bring this game to life. Hope to see you at PAX! View the full article

Möther Fafnir! Zombie Vikings is part of Vote to Play! You know what that means, right? It’s time for us to charm your asses off. If you don’t know about us, we’re Zoink, an indie studio from the west coast of Sweden. You might have heard about our previous title — Stick It to The man. At Zoink, we usually end our weeks with our traditional Pizza Friday, and maybe that’s why we decided to create what we call a “Pizza and beer game.†The last year and a half, ten little Zoink devs have worked crazy hard to create the awesome 1-4 player story brawler that is Zombie Vikings. Because of this, you will soon be able to take a cruise through the intestines of the Midgaard Serpent and fight giant poultry in a 30 level, stab-you-in-the-gut-athon stuffed with 40 unlockable weapons. Quite neat (but at the same time icky), huh? This is what we’re thinking — games are the most fun played together, and with that we don’t just mean having your characters appear on the same screen. Oh no. We’ve created a bunch of ways to interact with your friends! Like building a tower of Vikings, stitching yourselves together to one giant Mega Zombie, or picking each other up with a quick stab in the butt. Since you’re a Zombie, the last one doesn’t hurt (at least we don’t think so). If you’re still not convinced that voting for us is the best idea since ice cream stuffed with cookie dough, here are a couple of other reasons! Single player and online/offline multiplayer! Hilarious writing by Zach Wienersmith, author of SMBC! Collectable Viking Runes. Gain new cool abilities and mix up your style of play! 5 versus arenas for the times when co-op just feels too nice! So vöte för üs! If we win and get super famous and rich, we’ll invite you all for a huge smorgasbord, complete with Swedish fermented herring and Dala horse decorations. So burst out from your grave, grab a can of lukewarm Berzerker™and join the most epic hackfest of the first millennium! View the full article

Grow Home is coming to PS4 on September 1st. Yay! Even better, you get to decide if it’s going to be free for all Playstation Plus members as we’re featured in the new “Vote to Play†campaign. We’d love your vote, and we’re excited to know what you think of it! Developing the game has been a real adventure for us. It actually started as an experiment in procedural animation, but even in the early stages we could see a unique charm and personality coming from the way our character moved. The more we tinkered, the more we felt compelled to try and build a game around it. At Reflections, we’re used to working on big team, big budget, high-profile titles. Creating a smaller game like this was very new to us, so we had to take a different approach. A tiny team of eight set about building a game we could share with Ubisoft staff around the world — we wanted to prove that we had something fun instead of promise it. The game spread internally, quickly reaching the desktops of top management who jumped on board giving us the go-ahead to officially launch it. Grow Home is the story of BUD, a Botanical Utility Droid sent on a quest across the galaxy to seek out a new species of flora to help oxygenate his home world. He finds the perfect specimen in the Star Plant. BUD’s mission is to grow it to maturity and harvest the seeds it produces, resulting in a towering two-kilometer-high bridge from the ground to his space ship. Along the way you’ll explore floating islands, encounter strange plants and unusual animals. The Star Plant is a living thing, so growing and steering it is quite a wild ride. The shape it takes is all up to you, as you grow your own playground in the sky. Using BUD’s hands, you’ll push, pull, and grab onto objects, as well as climb. Grabbing with the left and right trigger buttons brings a unique feel to how you interact with the world, especially the climbing which can be very physical and perilous — you get a real sense of vertigo and you’re acutely aware of the long drop below you! As you make your way toward the sky, you’ll discover other ways of getting around faster. That’s where discoveries like the teleportation pads, bouncing leaves, flower parachutes and leaf glider come in. It might be safer to grow and climb everywhere, but once you have a glider or parachute to use if you fall then you’ll begin to push yourself to take bigger and bolder risks — jumping, bouncing, gliding, and falling with confidence. We wanted to challenge how we make games at Ubisoft Reflections. Grow Home has given us a chance to experiment on a much smaller scale than we’re used to. It’s a project born out of our passion for games and a determination to do things differently. We feel we’ve created a beautiful and intriguing world that invites you to climb that next ledge and see what new surprises you’ll find. We hope you enjoy the adventure! View the full article

Hey guys and gals! Trent Kusters here from League of Geeks. We’re huge tabletop fans here at LoG, and Armello is our passion project to bring board games to life in the medium we know best: video games. With the stunning world we’ve created, bringing that experience to console was something we just couldn’t resist, and so surely there’s no better way than to mark our arrival on PS4 with PlayStation Vote to Play! Set in a vibrant, magical world with a tinge of darkness, Armello thrusts players into a Game of Thrones-esque struggle for power in epic single or multiplayer action. Players take on the role of a Hero from one of the four animal clans and navigate their character across the procedurally generated board as they quest, scheme, explore, vanquish monsters, perform the Mad King’s royal edicts, and face off against other players, with one ultimate end goal in mind — storming the palace and becoming King or Queen of Armello. You’ll start your turn in your clan grounds and traverse the board with a set number of action points for each turn to spend on moving their character from tile to tile. Each tile presents different consequences including exploring a dungeon, gaining or losing health, claiming a settlement for your own, or granting stealth. With more than 100 beautifully animated and illustrated cards, you can cast spells, recruit followers, uncover ancient treasures, and execute treacherous plots as you quest for the throne! There are four ways to win in Armello. Combat — Slaying the king and surviving the confrontation. Prestige Victory — Having the most Prestige when the King dies, whether from his afflictions (the King loses health every dawn) or dying in combat with the attacking player also not surviving the battle. Prestige is gained by completing heroic deeds such as killing other players, vanquishing banes, or completing quests. Spirit Stone Collection — magical Spirit Stones can be found throughout Armello. If a player collects four, they can use them to assist the King in passing in peace, restoring balance to Armello. Rot Victory — players who defeat the King in combat whilst having more Rot than him (and live to tell the tale) will win the game and shroud Armello in darkness. We’re convinced you’ll love Armello. It’s something we’ve been pouring our heart and soul (and bank accounts) into for over four years now. All that time we’ve been heavily focused on creating something that not just speaks to that nostalgia we all share for great board games and tales of adventure, but breaks new ground as a contemporary video game. Easy to Play, Hard to Master — Armello is an intuitive game, easy to pick up and experience but with deep and emergent strategy. Dynamic Sandbox — Armello features a gorgeous dynamic world which procedurally generates a new map each and every game, complete with a dynamic quest system ensuring no two games of Armello are ever the same. Multiple Playable Heroes — Full release will include 8 playable Heroes. Each unique Hero possesses a unique power, stat spread, and AI personality. Also heroes can be customized with Amulet and Signet Ring load-outs to match your play style or counter opponents’ strategies. Fast & Thoughtful — Adventuring in Armello is fast-paced fun, filled with deadly tactical and politically complex decisions requiring careful forethought and planning. Turn-Based Day & Night Cycle — Armello features a fuzzy turn-based system, cycling between Day and Night phases. The fuzzy turns allow you to still play cards and do certain actions when it’s not your turn, and when it is you use Action Points to move around the hex board. World Class Music & Audio — By Michael Allen, internationally acclaimed artist Lisa Gerrard, and Jacek Tuschewski. Animated Cards — Armello will feature over a 120+ beautifully animated in-game Cards, from artists all over the world. True Tabletop Feel — We painstakingly cherry-picked the best parts of the tabletop experience, like our custom physics-based dice! Hello again, everyone! It’s Dan, Harry, and Josh from Calvino Noir. Last time we were on Playstation.Blog we chatted about the game launching on PS4, and the characters. We’re back to talk about the voice acting which brings Wilt, Siska, and Arno to life… and to announce the official release date on PS4! We just wrapped up the final session of voice recording at SIDE studios. We recorded professional actors in their studio in London, and the process was fascinating. Anthony Howell (Wilt), Wolf Kahler (Arno, Bartender), and John Bowe (Narrator) were finishing their lines up during 9 hours over 3 days of voice acting. With the previous sessions that we’d done that adds up to around 29 hours of voice recording sessions! We are lucky to be working with Howell (Dragon Age: Inquisition), and Kahler (Colonel Dietrich, Raiders of the Lost Ark). While you are moving around in Calvino Noir’s levels, the characters that you control will have conversations. This is where most of our narrative happens. Sneaking into a secure location to grab secret documents creates discussions. They talk about what the implications of what is happening, how it relates to the other things you’ve found, and builds the lore of our 1930s noir world. Getting the balance of telling people what they need to know and exploring the relationships of the characters is challenging, but our writer Dr. Dejan Levi built our 12,000 word narrative around his own mix of classical noir and more recent cultural influences. Our editor, neo-noir author Craig Clevenger made a final pass. In true film noir fashion, we have a poetic narrator describing the details of the scenes around you. The game takes a zoomed out view of the buildings you’re in to show off the dramatic architecture we’ve worked on, but to fill in those small details the charming voice of John Bowe describes the surroundings. The sounds, smells, and feel of these moments in time reflect the state of the story and are something we couldn’t describe any other way. There have been a lot of games that use large amounts of text to tell stories and they’ve been great. It’s nice to invent a character’s voice in your own head but that can be a vague representation of what they’re feeling in the moment. Our talented actors make an impression with their emotional performances. We are excited to see our film noir story come to life when it launches on August 25th! View the full article

Hi everyone, Marcus from SideQuest Studios here. I’m happy to be back and share some news about our upcoming RPG Rainbow Skies. After listening to a lot of fan feedback, we are happy to announce that we are now also developing Rainbow Skies for PS4. We plan to release Rainbow Skies with cross save support for all current PlayStation platforms (PS4, PS3, PS Vita) in the second half of 2016. For those of you who missed out on our previous game, we are pleased to confirm that we will also be re-releasing Rainbow Moon on PS4 sometime in 2016. I know that a lot of our fans are eagerly awaiting news on Rainbow Skies, so I would like to give you an insight into some of the progress to the story system we have made in recent months. Rainbow Skies has an increased emphasis on storytelling, writing, character backgrounds, and acting, so players can expect a more interesting and well-crafted plot that features many twists and turns along the way. The complex background story consists of multiple, interwoven narratives, told with easy-to-read dialogue that’s entertaining and, in the case of certain characters, extremely funny. Along with enlisting the help of a dedicated story and script writer, the original monologue system from Rainbow Moon has been replaced by a more complex dialogue system. Up to four characters can speak simultaneously which leads to much more lively conversations. We have also implemented numerous new animations, emoticons, and conversation-specific icons that help convey the feelings and moods that our heroes undergo during their journey. Trust me, they’ll be very emotional! We have also created several short cutscenes, we call “action clips,†which are played when players reach certain checkpoints in the story that focus on specific actions, characters or objects. Action clips don’t contain text or conversations, but they do help in explaining the current situation, introduce new game elements or simply act as a way to spice up in game events. After releasing Rainbow Moon we received a lot of feedback that players wanted an increased emphasis on storytelling and we believe that players will be pleased with the new story system in Rainbow Skies. For those of you that prefer to focus on the gameplay, rest assured all conversations can be skipped at any time. A detailed log system keeps track of every single mission and sub-task, including a short reminder about your next objective so you don’t have to worry about missing any vital information or events. This makes it very easy to pick up where you left off, even after taking a longer break from the game. I would love to post more updates in the near future, but for now I’m back off to continue working on Rainbow Skies, and hope that many of you will be excited to play it in 2016. For more frequent updates, you can subscribe to our Rainbow Skies newsletter or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. If you have any questions or feedback, please let me know in the comments below. If you’ve been waiting to find out what happens in the penultimate episode of Tales from the Borderlands, you won’t be waiting much longer! Episode 4: Escape Plan Bravo is set for release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, August 18th. Today we can show you a few all-new screenshots from the episode for a little peek at what’s coming up. Between psychos, spaceships, and a certain diamond gun-pooping pony, there’s a lot packed into this one! We certainly left our unlikely heroes in a precarious position at the end of the last episode. After being captured by Vallory and her goons at the end of Episode 3, Rhys and Fiona are now forced to continue the search for the Vault beacon – at gunpoint. The beacon is on the Hyperion moon base (Helios), while our heroes are on Pandora… so there’s the pesky cold void of death known as ‘space’ to overcome. Even with assistance from a familiar face, and with a worryingly helpful Handsome Jack hitching a ride in Rhys’ head, getting on board the ominous ‘H’ is going to take every drop of guile, and quite possibly all the spunk you’ve got. One last thing: sacrifices will be made, so we hope you’re ready to make the tough choices needed to succeed… As ever, thank you for reading, and we’d love to read your speculation in the comments below!
