Now that The Order: 1886 has been released to the world, we wanted to shed some additional insight into the work that went into capturing the game’s unique atmosphere. Once the initial story treatment was done, the wheels were set in motion. Our setting was to be London in the Victorian Era and no other setting would have better suited our first foray into creating a new game world. We felt that the aesthetic we were seeking had not yet been realized in games. All we needed to do was materialize the things that were on our head into a 3D environment. That was definitely easier said than done, but we knew that over the years we had assembled the right team to tackle this goal. Our visual target was not only influenced by the era itself, it was guided by real world techniques from photography and cinematography, both old and new. We had to find a way to recreate the texture of the real world and the imperfections we have been so accustomed to in all we see, whether with our own eyes or through the lens of a camera. This was truly a massive undertaking. From the lenses we recreated in our engine to emulate actual physical glass, to stage lighting that replicated the “thickness†of the atmosphere around us, all of these aspects formed the foundation of the visuals we wanted to deliver. This is in many ways why we had waited until PS4 to start working on this game. We needed this platform to do justice to the goals we had set for ourselves. It was no easy challenge but in the end we created our vision of late 19th century Europe while infusing the anachronistic elements that defines our IP. It’s been a delicate balance of integrating all of the team’s work into making something truly unique, and painting the canvas of our world to show what we felt the next-generation of games could bring in terms of visuals. We have been both motivated and humbled by the feedback we have received since revealing the very first frames from our game back in June of 2013. Lastly, from all of us at Ready At Dawn, our heartfelt thanks to all our fans for your support, through thick and thin. It has meant a great deal to us. Until next time… “Honi soit qui mal y pense.†View the full article

Sid ShumanI’ve decided that describing virtual reality to someone who’s never tried it is basically impossible. Like tasting or smelling or seeing, VR is a sensory experience that you have to try for yourself to truly understand. Words can’t do it justice. Nonetheless, Justin and I will do our best. Fresh off our positive test drive of last year’s original prototype, we were curious how much Project Morpheus’s upgraded specs have enhanced the overall VR experience, most notably that illusion of “presence†— the fragile feeling that you’re actually inhabiting the game’s world. Read on for Justin’s thoughts. But based on what I experienced, Project Morpheus has indeed come a long, long way since last March. For starters, the headset feels far lighter and much more comfortable. The screen can slide forward a few inches, which makes makes taking it on and off a much simpler affair. “The new display makes a world of difference.†Then there’s the display, which has seen a hefty upgrade from last year’s LCD to an OLED 1920 X RGB X 1080 specification that boasts richer colors and silky smoothness thanks to the new 120hz refresh rate. There’s no doubt about it: The new display makes a world of difference. There are myriad other enhancements. Nine LEDs now adorn the front and sides of Project Morpheus, which will allow PS Camera to track in 360 degrees. And latency, that eternal enemy of VR engineers, has been reduced to less than 18 milliseconds — a key technical achievement that promises to make the player’s movements more responsive and the experience more immersive. What none of these technical specs explain is how immersive Project Morpheus really is. It’s groundbreaking. I tried out two demos, “Magic Controller†and “Bedroom Robots,†both of which starred the cute little Asobi robots from PS4’s Playroom app. “Magic Controller†was a great introduction to the basics of VR. As I peered down at my DualShock 4, I saw a 3D cartoon simulacrum accurately overlaid over the form of my actual DualShock 4, keeping up a perfect illusion as I rotated the controller in my (real) hands. This was fascinating enough, but then the “magic†DualShock 4 transformed into a music player, and then a working flashlight, before my eyes. “It’s impossible to explain.†This demo might sound like kid’s stuff, but I was totally engrossed. I clicked the touchpad to deploy a small army of Asobi robots, who began dancing frantically while I waved my DualShock 4 flashlight’s beam over them. Thanks to the headset’s realistic depth perception, I felt like I was there, inhabiting that smoky dance floor with them. It was an impressive start. The second demo, “Bedroom Robots,†took a different approach. In this voyeuristic VR demo, I peered into a dollhouse populated with tiny robots. Leaning in closer to get a better look, I watched them ride exercise bikes, throw frisbees, and play ping-pong. Project Morpheus kept up perfectly with all of my real-life moments, letting me change my viewing angle as naturally as in real life. As I studied the tiny figures, a shiver traveled up my spine. The animations were charming enough, but if I had viewed this scene on a TV screen I wouldn’t have given it a second glance. Seen through Project Morpheus, the scene took on a weight and a gravity I haven’t experienced outside of, well, real life. Again, it’s impossible to explain. You really do have to try it. The technical stuff is way beyond me. But I’m hugely hopeful that Project Morpheus will empower completely new approaches to “game†design. Imagine a VR murder mystery that puts you at the center of a dinner party, or a stroll through an alien garden where you can stop to smell the (flesh-eating) roses. Played on a 2D TV screen, these experiences might look neat, but you’d be done in minutes. Experienced through Project Morpheus, they have the potential to be truly memorable and powerful. My body is ready. Justin MassongillMy Project Morpheus experience involved a cage, some jellyfish, an agitated shark, an increased heart rate and a genuine sense of terror. First things first: strapping the newest prototype onto my noggin was a trivial affair, requiring minimal adjustments to find a comfortable fit (which left space for my glasses without sacrificing precious immersion). “It left space for my glasses without sacrificing immersion.†A refresh of last year’s demo, “The Deep†showcases just how convincingly PS4’s prototype VR headset can persuade the human brain that you’re somewhere you’re not. Project Morpheus’ new enhancements coalesce to drastically elevate the demo’s immersiveness. As the demo began, I found myself standing in a cage maybe 20 feet under water. When I looked straight up I could see the cable suspending me, leading back up to a small boat on the surface. Schools of fish swam by, and bubbles floated through the water, sometimes just in front of my face — an unexpected “wow†moment each time it happened. I descended further down through different scenes, including a particularly gorgeous area lit only by passing jellyfish, leading to the meat of the demo: a tense standoff with a shark who had a hankerin’ for some tasty human flesh. After circling my cage a few times, the creature lunged at me. Thankfully my steadfast vessel fended off my would-be killer. The shark latched on to one of the cage’s light fixtures, jerking and thrashing it loose and tossing it to the ocean floor. The cage shook with each pull, which — get this — my brain interpreted as actual movement. Embarrassingly, I involuntarily tried to compensate for this by moving my real-life legs. I had to make a concerted effort to remind myself that I wasn’t actually hundreds of feet underwater, being attacked by a highly evolved aquatic predator. “One time, I caught myself actually taking a step back.†After a couple more circles around my beaten and battered cage, the shark came at me again. Then again. Each time, he would barely miss and nudge the cage to the side, or he would tear into another part of the cage and rip it off. Eventually, the entire front panel of the cage was gone, leaving nothing but fear between me and my impending end. I stood, alone and vulnerable, inside three fourths of a cage, watching as the animal circled, eyeing me — toying with me. He made a run for me a couple more times, and one time I caught myself actually taking a step back. Again, involuntary. At this point, my palms were sweaty. My heart was beating just a bit faster than normal. I felt genuinely uncomfortable even though I knew none of this was real. As far as my brain was concerned, it was real. I was there. I was, in some small part of my mind, mildly scared for my life. This is the most exciting proposition of Project Morpheus, and of virtual reality as a concept. If someone who’s closely followed and scrutinized this new technology can still be awed by it, imagine how inspiring and transformative it could be for others! One of our most impossible science fiction fantasies is here, it’s real, and it’s exactly as unbelievable as we had hoped it would be. View the full article

While developing the PlayStation 4 system, our hardware and software teams relied on feedback from our community of developers. The result is the most innovative and forward-thinking gaming console in the market today. Since launch, PlayStation has continued that trend of listening to feedback by bringing some of the most highly requested features from the PlayStation Nation to PS4 with each of our system software updates. When we unveiled PS4 two years ago, we announced Suspend/Resume, a feature that would enable PS4 users to jump in and out of their games faster than ever. This has been a feature gamers have been excited about since then, and today I am honored to officially confirm that system software update 2.50, “Yukimura,†will soon deliver Suspend/Resume, as well as a number of other requested features to PS4. Suspend/Resume, which will be supported by nearly all PS4 titles, will create an atmosphere where your games are immediately available at any time — just pick up your DualShock 4 wireless controller, hit the PS button and get right back into the action of your games. When it’s time to log off, simply put your PS4 in Rest Mode and when you power up the next time, you’ll start your game where you left off. Spend less time getting into your games and more time playing them. Here are some of the other highly requested new features and changes coming soon in “Yukimura:†Sub-account to Master account Upgrade: Users with a sub-account will now be able to upgrade to a master account directly from their PS4 when they turn 18, removing restrictions for chat, enabling users to fund their own wallet, make purchases and more. Currently, users can upgrade their sub-accounts online at https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/. Facebook Friend Search: Gamers globally have jumped into PS4 as a redefined social gaming experience and connecting with friends over the network is a huge part of what makes the PS4 community so special. PlayStation now lets you go even bigger by connecting with your Facebook friends on PS4 using your linked account. Search for Facebook friends who are PlayStation Network members and build on the foundation of Friends you already have in your list. Remote Play & Share Play at 60 fps: For games that support 60 fps, the ability to customize the frame rate of Remote Play and Share Play will be added with “Yukimura.†Play to your bandwidth strengths and use this option to stream gameplay at 60 or 30 fps when using Remote Play or Share Play on supported devices. Accessibility Options: “Yukimura†introduces a wide variety of options to make their PS4 entertainment experience even more accessible. Options include text to speech, enlarged text, bolder fonts, higher contrast UI, zoom for displayed pictures, invert colors on screen and more. Users will also be able to reassign buttons for DualShock 4, making it easier for users with limited manual dexterity or limited reach and strength to play. Trophy Improvements: We have received a ton of feedback to improve Trophies. In “Yukimura,†a screenshot will automatically be captured at the moment a Trophy is earned, making it easier than ever for you to share your greatest gaming moments with your friends. We’re also adding more sorting options along with the new ability to remove games from the Trophy list that have 0% completion. Share Video Clips to Dailymotion: When sharing standout PS4 moments via the Share button on DualShock 4, “Yukimura†will allow players to upload directly to Dailymotion. Stay tuned for more information on “Yukimura†and, as always, let us know in the comments how we can continue to improve PS4 to make it the best place to play. View the full article

With a bow, cape, and his trusty (perhaps iconic) cap, Sir Graham enters a cave riddled with spare beds and a slumbering dragon. This odd story is only one of many being told in King’s Quest, the ambitious rekindling of the decades-old adventure series. Although the new King’s Quest is coming to PS4 and PS3 later this year, I was treated to an early look by none other than Matt Korba, the president and creative director of The Odd Gentlemen. Korba’s reverence of the original series resonates behind his every word, and that reverence translates into a charming, colorful adventure about an old king and a curious granddaughter. Graham, the aging protagonist and storyteller, narrates the plot as he explains his past adventures to his granddaughter Gwendolyn. This allows the team at The Odd Gentlemen to skim across different timelines, exploring a narrative in the past and “present†simultaneously. And like its predecessors, King’s Quest remains a story-driven experience, in which players interact with the world around them, solve puzzles, and live out Graham’s adventures in comical (and touching) fashion. While Korba never explained why there were a legion of discarded beds in the dragon’s cave, he hinted that everything would be revealed over time, even in small details like a discarded arrow nestled into the cave wall. In the dragon’s lair, Graham is trying to reclaim a magic mirror from the dragon’s clutches. If he fails to hide in a bed on time, he plays a role in a light-hearted “death scene.†But of course, since King Graham is actually alive and well doing narration, he quips that he was just making sure Gwendolyn is still awake. Later in the demo, Korba skipped ahead to a later section of the story which takes place before Sir Graham was even a knight. With a little less resolve and a lot less skill, Graham is attempting to cross a river in order to attend a knight’s tournament. This introduces yet more puzzles, tasking players with finding creative ways to ford the fast-flowing water and reach the arena. Korba explained that their design is heavily inspired by Ken and Roberta Williams’ original philosophies, which form a pyramid of sorts between art, story, and gameplay. They strive for a balance between these three elements. This is clear in The Odd Gentlemen’s vision, as even simple gameplay animations showcase Graham’s personality; his pitiful attempts to fire an arrow, or a stumble while lifting a heavy gear into place. While players can lead Graham to a variety of fictional deaths, there are no actual “dead ends†or fail states outside of “try it again.†Korba wants King’s Quest to click with families; not just children, not just adults, but the whole bunch. And with such a charming story and enticing artistic direction, the studio looks well poised to live up to the enormous expectations set by the project’s legacy. View the full article

Hey everyone, John from ATLUS here. You know how in some RPGs, you spend all this time and experience perfecting your combat strategies, honing the best possible team imaginable to face off with the big bad boss at The End? Well, let me paint a nightmare scenario for you: your pool of warriors that are leveling up and gaining experience have a few traitors in their midst. And as you inch closer and closer towards the final boss, you’re forced to kill one of your teammates — hoping against all hope that you figured out enough clues along the way to be able to correctly identify which one of them is actually a traitor. And after you repeatedly undergo this pattern of trial of accusations and executions (bear in mind this is on top of a full day of combat) you’re squaring off against the final boss, only to have several party members turn on you because SURPRISE, you picked the wrong traitor. The End. Or rather, the beginning, because that’s the scenario that PS3 and PS Vita users will be facing when ATLUS launches the tactical RPG Lost Dimension this summer. In this wild mashup of an RPG, the player is the main protagonist of SEALED — a group of psychically gifted warriors — and acts as their commander on the battlefield. After combat, the warriors wait back in their base camp where the protagonist can chat with several members to improve their relationships, and at certain points use his unique ability to read minds to try and sniff out the traitors. Of course since you’ll be bonding with the rest of your combat unit, you get to use their experience in combat to both level up their individual abilities as well as get insight as to whether they may be the traitor. And man, let me tell you how much it sucks when you have to “erase†an ally you’ve really been pouring experience into. And for those worried about replayability, the traitors are randomly chosen each playthrough, so good luck with New Game+ mode! You can expect to see Lost Dimension on PS3 and PS Vita this summer in North America. View the full article

It’s not every day that you come across a series with a sadistic teddy bear at the helm, but that’s exactly what players get with the Danganronpa series. It’s garnered a passionate following of players thanks to its premise of high school students struggling against the whims of that diabolical (And adorable?) villain — with murderous confrontations as a result. To learn more about the series, and the upcoming adventure spin-off Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, we posed some questions to Director and Scenario Writer Kazutaka Kodaka, and then passed along your inquiries to him as a bonus. Let’s plunge into one of the minds behind Monokuma, and all the devilish games he plays… PlayStation.Blog: What was the team’s inspiration behind Another Episode? What do the new gameplay systems add to the game, and the storytelling? Kazutaka Kodaka: So the idea for the game is two girls escaping, or running away from, despair. The easiest way to tell their story is through an action game because action games actually require movement. So that’s why we ended up going with an action game for this one. PlayStation.Blog: Will it be possible for players new to the Danganronpa series to start with Another Episode? Kazutaka Kodaka: Essentially, Danganronpa Another Episode was created in a way that new players can start the series by playing it and be okay. PlayStation.Blog: How has the Danganronpa series allowed you to be creative in new ways? Kazutaka Kodaka: Obviously the main focus of a Danganronpa game is its story. That said, I’m always interested in adding in new gameplay elements and finding ways that gameplay can express the story. The Danganronpa series allows me to creatively find new ways to use gameplay to enhance and help the story move along. PlayStation.Blog: Have any of your personal experiences in life been reflecting in the stories you create? Kazutaka Kodaka: Not really. My life is actually pretty basic, and not many things happen. There’s actually a column I write in Japan, kind of like a blog, and it’s come to a point where I don’t know what to write because nothing happens to me. It’s not really a case where my life is reflected in my work or writing. @PlayStation @NISAmerica Question: Did Kodaka-sensei intend for fans to read Danganronpa Zero before or after playing Super Danganronpa 2? — OasisFan (@oasis789) February 28, 2015 Kazutaka Kodaka: Definitely the order would be Danganronpa 1, Danganronpa Zero, and then Danganronpa 2 is the best way to play it. @PlayStation @GloriousBagel @NISAmerica how closely does the character designer work with you inthe initial creation of the cast?(If at all) — Nathan Ortega (@kenjisalk) February 28, 2015 Kazutaka Kodaka: Basically, I give instructions for what I want to Mr. Komatsuzaki [the artist for Danganronpa]. That said, sometimes he comes up with a design cue that I like so much, I end up rewriting something into the story or scenario that shows off that particular aspect of Komatsuzaki’s character design. In the end, it’s a back and forth thing. @PlayStation @NISAmerica What inspired you to write the segments for the Monokuma Theater? What were you hoping to convey to your readers? — Jenny Saucerman (@jennysaucerman) February 28, 2015 Kazutaka Kodaka: So originally the idea was to create some space between the scenes of the game. I was trying to think of the best way to do that, and what I came up with was Monokuma Theater. It was the first idea I had, but it ended up being the best idea and the one we went with. So that’s why it’s in the game. Actually the idea came out of nowhere, but worked well for the first game. For the second game, those became more and more difficult to write. I feel like the ones in the second game aren’t up to par. @PlayStation @NISAmerica Are there any bizarre spin-offs or dream cross-overs you would love to do with the series? — Brad (@Baust528) February 28, 2015 Kazutaka Kodaka: First of all, an RPG. Probably Metal Gear. As everybody knows, in Metal Gear, Snake has a communicator. The famous line is where Snake gets killed and the person on the other end screams, “Snake! Snake!†So that’s what I’d have Monokuma say when he kills Snake. @PlayStation @NISAmerica If you could choose your own elaborate execution, what would it be? — Kyle Gaddo (@kylegaddo) February 28, 2015 Kazutaka Kodaka: It would probably be something not in the open. I would just run and run and run away from the killer, only to be enclosed in a room, panic, and get killed. So I guess you could call it a suicide death. Since we showed you our first gameplay reveal of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, more of the game and story have come together, and it’s become clear to us that this game is much more ambitious than we originally envisioned. After spending so many years with Nathan Drake, he means a lot to the team, and telling the climactic chapter of his adventures is a task we don’t take lightly — this game deserves every bit of the attention to detail, precise pacing, and nuanced storytelling Naughty Dog is known for. So we’ve made the difficult choice of pushing the game’s release date. Giving us a few extra months will make certain that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End not only meets the team’s high standards, but the high standards that gamers have come to expect from a Naughty Dog title. Thank you for your patience — we know the extra wait will be excruciating, but you’ll see it will be worth it as we reveal more about Uncharted 4 over the next year. The team at Naughty Dog will be heads down working through 2015 making sure that Nathan Drake’s story gets the closure it deserves. Come Spring 2016, you and Nate are in for one thrilling, emotional ride. Bruce Straley & Neil Druckmann // Directors, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End View the full article

When Hotline Miami released on PS3 and PS Vita in 2013 it delivered a tight run and gun shooter experience dripping with an unmistakable visual style and dark story that struck a chord with gamers worldwide. Some would argue that while the game itself was a modern classic it was the pulsing soundtrack that might have been the most memorable part of Hotline Miami and a large part of the game’s legacy. With the arrival of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number comes an incredible new soundtrack with 49 tracks from dozens of artists from around the world. While we don’t want to spoil the full track listing – it’s best experienced in the context of the game – the team thought it would be interesting to highlight their favorite tracks for the PlayStation community and give a little sample of the audio fun awaiting in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. The game itself is available now on PlayStation Network and is a Cross-Buy title across PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. Today is the day! On behalf of team Powers, it is our pleasure to tell you that the wait is over – Powers is available now to watch on PS3, PS4 and online. If you’ve been following us, you already know that Powers is not your normal, shiny superhero story – it asks deep and challenging questions. Powers explores the concept of what it would be to be a superhero in today’s celebrity obsessed culture. What if having a superpower is like having an addiction? What if you could fly, but you still had all the vulnerabilities of an average human being? And what if you lost your powers, and had to police your ex-mates while living as a mere mortal? In this show, not all people with powers are heroes, making the storyline mature and the characters deep, complex and challenging. Interested? Good. You can watch the first episode of Powers FREE today – all you have to do is click here to immediately start watching. Everyone – whether you are a PS Plus member or not – can watch the first episode for free. PlayStation Plus members will be able to watch the entire season free, along with enjoying all the other great benefits of being a member. The first three episodes launch today on PlayStation Store at one time for those of you who like to binge watch. Episode one is also free on PlayStation Store and weekly episodes will release every Tuesday until the season finale on April 28th. And with that, PlayStation proudly brings you our first-ever scripted original content series! We have worked on this series in partnership with Sony Pictures TV for the past several years, and I think you will really enjoy it. If you like what you see, be sure to let us know at @PowerstheSeries using #PowersonPS. View the full article

Happy DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition launch day, everyone! The guys at Ninja Theory and QLOC have put in a ton of hard work to bring you what is going to be the ultimate version of DmC. By now, you’ve probably heard about all of the content that we’ve added to DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition. Just in case you missed it, check out the announce trailer that covers all the new features. One of the coolest new features is squarely aimed at giving a difficulty boost to well-seasoned DmC players looking for challenge. In the new Must Style Mode enemies will ONLY receive damage when Dante has achieved an S-Rank combo. Especially when paired with Hardcore Mode, where a high style rank is more difficult to obtain, the mode has tested the metal of our QA and anyone that’s gotten an early look at the game. In fact, on higher difficulty modes, our guys have had to find some pretty creative ways to fight enemies on Must Style Mode. As you can imagine, fighting enemies that don’t have the decency to refrain from teleporting can be extremely difficult to get an S rank on. Just make sure you look around, the key to defeating them will be nearby… A cool side effect of the new mode that I know our combo vid friends will appreciate is that enemies will live much longer now, allowing for much longer combos before they are killed off. With the video upload capabilities of PS4, I’m expecting way more combo videos than we’re used to seeing. Or in my case, video tributes to how quickly I get wrecked. Big thanks to Ninja Theory and QLOC for putting together a fantastic game that we all hope you enjoy. Even bigger thanks to you the fans, whose support has gotten DmC the game and Devil May Cry the franchise where it is today. It was your feedback that inspired many aspects of this product. P.S. Special shout out to a fan that’s been the bomb for being a fan and champion for all things Devil May Cry. View the full article

Heists are now available to play in Grand Theft Auto Online. Heists bring a brand new 4-player cooperative gameplay experience to GTA Online, giving players the chance to team up to pull off a string of intense, multi-part raids and robberies across Los Santos and Blaine County. IGN recently exclaimed, “They’re real and they’re spectacular… these long-awaited four-player online heists are meaty and, in our initial experience, very different from anything else in GTA 5.†Setting Up for GTA Online HeistsWith the launch of GTA Online Heists, we have no doubt you and your Crew are ready to pull off elaborate robberies at some of Los Santos’ most closely-guarded institutions. Massive scores of GTA$ await those with the planning and the teamwork to pull off each of these audacious criminal endeavors. Here are a few pointers to help ensure your plan is of the best-laid variety. Follow the Leader A video posted by Rockstar Games (@rockstargames) on Mar 9, 2015 at 7:33am PDT A video posted by Rockstar Games (@rockstargames) on Mar 6, 2015 at 9:29am PST A video posted by Rockstar Games (@rockstargames) on Mar 5, 2015 at 7:59am PST First things first: every Heist needs a leader and the Heist Leader is going to need to be at least rank 12 and own a high-end apartment with a planning board in order to co-ordinate the crime. Not only do Heist Leaders cough up all of the setup costs up-front, they have complete control over team roles and the cut of the final take each Crew Member gets. Additionally, Heist progress is only saved for the Heist Leader – so when choosing a leader it makes sense to link up with someone you can trust. All TalkIt should go without saying that good teamwork starts with communication – and headsets are important to successfully pulling off Heists. Whether it’s telling a lookout where they need to be, a passenger locating vehicles using the Trackify app and giving directions to the driver, or two infiltrators operating a pair of security panels in perfect sync. Roll CallAt different stages of each Heist, Crew members will be assigned different roles. These could be slightly different responsibilities within a single scenario – for example, two lookouts and a bodyguard while a buyer completes a less-then-legal exchange of information – or larger deviations, like two players patrolling in an attack chopper above while the other two infiltrate a facility below. It’s important for all players to know their strengths and, in turn, for the Heist Leader to assign accordingly. If you see yourself as an ace pilot, then put in some time at the Flight School and increase that flying stat to prove it. Tool UpProfessionals don’t expect the customer to provide the tools for the job. While there might be some more specialized equipment that may be provided (or that you’ll need to acquire) along the way, for the most part you’ll be using your own custom vehicles and firearms to get by. So it’s a good time to take stock and make sure your garage and your arsenal are prepared for all possibilities. Silencers on guns and RPGs in general are especially useful for certain Heists while four-door vehicles with added armor can come in handy if you like to keep your friends close. With GTA Online Heists you can unlock a range of new vehicles and gear, including an extensive selection of new outfits perfect for whatever each Heist throws at you. Bonus RoundFor the financially ambitious there are a few ways to increase the income from Heists in a major way. First off, each Heist has its own Elite Challenge which, upon completion, will yield a substantial cash bonus. These can be completed multiple times, but be warned: they’re no cakewalk. On top of that, there are Special Heist Completion bonuses that can only be achieved once per person, but will add some serious zeros to your bank balance. Examples include: First Time – Completing each Heist Finale for the first time, will net you a bonus cash reward All In Order Challenge – Complete all Heists in order, including Setups, to receive a $1,000,000 cash bonus Loyalty Challenge – Complete all Heists, including Setups, with the same team of players to receive an additional $1,000,000 bonus Criminal Mastermind Challenge – Complete all Heists, in order, with the same group of players, without losing any lives, to receive a massive $10,000,000 bonus The one-off bonus challenges are linked to in game awards. You can monitor your award progress via the Stats > Awards tab in the Pause Menu. Adversary Modes, Daily Objectives and MoreAlongside Heists comes a range of new features and enhancements to make the entire GTA Online experience bigger and deeper. Adversary Modes bring three new kinds of competition to GTA Online while new Daily Objectives and other Freemode activities bring new life to the hectic streets of Los Santos and Blaine County. Here’s a rundown of just some of the new features and additions that have launched with Heists: New Adversary ModesThese brand new player vs. player modes bring a range of intense new competitive challenges to GTA Online. Adversary Modes will unlock as players progress through Heists. Daily ObjectivesThe Los Santos daily hustle just got a little more lucrative. Whether you tend towards Jobs or free-form activities, Daily Objectives will give you a rotating series of challenges to take on for GTA$ rewards. With three new objectives per day, players can stack up challenges over consecutive days to earn bonuses of up to $500,000. New Freemode ActivitiesYou and your fellow players also have new opportunities for cash and RP rewards with new activities added to the world in Freemode. Be on the lookout for calls from Lester, who may need help to distract the cops in a specific area while his accomplices finish their criminal business. Lamar may call looking for help destroying a vehicle or two, while Trevor and Ron need occasional help picking their business rival’s planes out of the sky. Along with GTA$ and RP bonuses, there are all-new Awards available for completing these challenges with style. There’s also a new in-game Email notification system that will allow you to contact and message any of your GTA Online friends, no matter what session they’re in – as well as a host of new Awards that yield new items including exclusive t-shirts and car modifications. Hello there! My name’s Luke Staddon and I’m one of four-person studio XMPT Games. I’m here to tell you about the latest title we’ve been working on, fast-paced arena combat game DiscStorm. It’s launching this year on PS Vita thanks to the lovely chaps at Mastertronic. We’re a group of friends from the UK with a shared love for all things gaming. We’ve been making games for about half a decade now — albeit whilst working full-time jobs. DiscStorm came about from our desire to play classic multiplayer matches with friends. We wanted a speedy arcade game like Bomberman but with modern features like online play, so that we could play against each other whenever we wanted. After searching around online for a while and not finding anything that was quite what we were looking for, we thought: why not take a shot at making something ourselves? DiscStorm is the game we all want to play. It’s all about hurling flying discs that ricochet around the game’s arenas at break-neck speed. Whether you’re lobbing them at an incoming pack of zombies or your best friend’s face, you’ll need split-second reactions to succeed. We’ve kept the deathmatches fresh by providing a whole host of game modes. From classic first-to-ten brawls, tactical games of survival and the dreaded one-hit-kill “Death Disc†mode, there are plenty of different match types, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. We’ve even added in a bunch of power-ups, too! Despite starting out with the intention of creating a great multiplayer experience, we also wanted to create a single-player campaign that would stand out in its own right. Our aim was to provide a challenge that harked back to the gameplay of titles on ’90s consoles — the bosses require you to figure out exactly how to beat them, whilst still testing your skills and reactions. We’ve tried to echo these ideals in the music and art style too; blending chiptunes music and pixelated graphics with modern dance and highly detailed artwork. Proving your skills as a Disc Master in the single-player adventure will unlock new costumes for the quirky cast of characters — my personal favourite is “Like A Sir†Gustav, with his top hat and monocle. There are also all of the usual trimmings you’d expect from a modern title: Trophies, online multiplayer and leaderboards. We’ve even added a mode exclusive to PS Vita, where two players can compete against each other on a single device. We’re always looking for ways to make our games better and make it the experience you want to have. If you have any suggestions or ideas for DiscStorm, we’d love to hear them! Leave a comment here or just come and have a chat if you see us out and about at game festivals or events. Hope to see you there! View the full article

This week was awesome. Helldivers is out now (over a million kills already!) and word on the street is it’s pretty darn good! OlliOlli2 is also out now (for free if you’re a PS Plus member), and I CAN’T. STOP. PLAYING. It’s so good, you guys. We revealed the new prototype of Project Morpheus at GDC. It’s got a slick OLED screen, a 120hz refresh rate, and a bundle of ergonomic improvements to make sure it’s extra-comfy while strapped to your noggin. Oh, and it’s coming out in the first half of 2016! Look for full impressions on PS.Blog soon (though it’s not hard to find stories about it all over the ‘net). For now, I will say that the updated version of “The Deep†genuinely, legitimately terrified me. Final Fantasy XIV’s Heavensward expansion comes out June 23rd! With millions of subscribers and an ever-growing world of content to explore, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has struck a chord with the larger MMO community — and it shows no signs of relenting. In fact, Square Enix revealed today that its upcoming expansion, Heavensward, will debut on June 23rd of this year. It will introduce massive new zones, flying mounts, three new jobs and more to the already staggering Eorzean landscape. During the Game Developers Conference earlier this week, my colleague Ryan Clements and I spoke with Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida about his tireless work on Final Fantasy XIV. Of course, we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to ask for new details pertaining to the upcoming Heavensward expansion. Yoshida, with his immaculately styled hair and impressive collection of metal rings, exudes a calm, confident air, despite the tremendous expectations placed upon him and his team. Heavensward promises to add an incredible amount of new content to Final Fantasy XIV, but Yoshida notes that none of the FFXIV team members are dedicated to work solely on this new expansion. While developing Heavensward, the team has also been working to implement new content into the existing FFXIV experience — including the fan-favorite Gold Saucer and Triple Triad, a fully featured deck-building card game that hearkens back to Final Fantasy VIII and is playable across Eorzea with NPCs and other players alike. “The thought of pushing Gold Saucer back to Heavensward never crossed my mind.†It was a conscious decision to add lots of new content, including Gold Saucer, near the end of the FFXIV 2.X storyline, to make sure players have plenty to do until Heavensward launches. “Gold Saucer was always part of the 2.X roadmap. It was always part of A Realm Reborn,†Yoshida explains. “The thought of pushing it back until Heavensward never crossed my mind.†Zones in Final Fantasy XIV are already huge — they’re designed to fit within 2km by 2km boundaries — but there are new scenarios to consider since Heavensward will introduce flying mounts (including flying chocobos and single-rider airships) for the first time. Flying mounts will get you around approximately three times faster than ground-based mounts, but Yoshida’s team is making sure to include surprising elements and discoveries within each zone to keep players exploring. Yoshida estimates that there will be around 1.5 times as much area to explore in Heavensward’s new zones — while there may be fewer zones, there will end up being just as much traversable area in Heavensward at launch as in A Realm Reborn. Final Fantasy XIV recently celebrated the milestone of four million registered accounts, but this success isn’t changing the team’s plans: “The number of subscriptions doesn’t necessarily affect the development of the game, since the number of people who can enter a certain zone or server is limited,†says Yoshida. “There may be opportunities to increase the number of servers to accommodate more players, but the content itself isn’t affected by the number of people playing.†He went on to explain that the development team is conscious of a gap between newer players and FFXIV veterans, and that they continue to look for ways to bridge content and help new Eorzeans transition into high-level content, eventually becoming veterans themselves. “One advantage of having more players subscribe is more revenue,†he continued, “not only for Square Enix but for us to put back into the game. By having more players join us, we can feed that back into polishing the quality of your gameplay experience.†Yoshida-san himself is an MMO veteran, and this has informed certain aspects of FFXIV’s design. An early inspiration was Ultima Online, which first opened his mind to the idea of players across the globe gathering in a virtual world to play together. The concept of PKs and PKKs also illustrated that while cooperation is fun, fighting against other players can be fun as well. Yoshida has taken a particularly close look at large-scale PvP in other MMOs, like World of Warcraft’s Horde vs. Alliance scenario and Dark Age of Camelot’s Realm vs. Realm. He specifically wanted to avoid situations in which one group would have a distinct advantage over another, hence FFXIV’s Frontlines mode that sees three Grand Companies competing against one another. Other MMO influences include public events from Warhammer, which saw further refinement in Guild Wars’ dynamic events. When they wanted to incorporate this kind of system into A Realm Reborn, Yoshida relayed to the dev team that they should have spontaneous live events that involve players who happen to be nearby. This eventually became the F.A.T.E. system, now a staple for FFXIV players of all levels. Final Fantasy XIV features hours and hours of original content, but it’s not afraid to borrow from the series’ rich history, either. “What we strive to achieve with FFXIV is like a Final Fantasy series theme park,†says Yoshida. “You have original attractions that have to be good, but we also want to incorporate elements that Final Fantasy players from any generation will recognize and be attracted to.†The team is conscious of the series passionate fan base though, and they’re careful to respect any source material they implement into FFXIV: “The relationship between Cloud and Sephiroth, for example, is very iconic to Final Fantasy fans. If we were to depict that in FFXIV, there’s a risk that Final Fantasy VII fans might see it and be shocked to see these characters behaving differently than they might have imagined. We don’t want to modify these characters’ stories — players have a strong affinity with them, and we want to respect that.†“…like a Final Fantasy theme park.†Of course, the breadth of the Final Fantasy universe isn’t to be underestimated, and Yoshida doesn’t expect that he’ll run out of content to nod to in FFXIV: “You might have noticed the Floating Continent in Heavensward, and I’ve always wanted to go to the moon (like in Final Fantasy IV). There are still many classic elements from Final Fantasy that we can incorporate, and we want to continue blending them into FFXIV for fans to enjoy.†I seized this opportunity to request that Yoshida-san and team let us fight Kefka in the future. Everyone in the room laughed, which I hope means they’ll consider it! Questions abound regarding how the new jobs in Heavensward will be implemented, since they don’t require a base class. Yoshida added some clarity when we asked for more details: “We were actually recently deciding what to call these jobs that don’t have a base class, and we’ve decided to call them ‘Extra Jobs.’ Just like when you can switch to different jobs when you’re at level 30, that applies to these as well. As long as any class or job is at level 30, you’ll be able to access any of these three new jobs.†Before meeting with Yoshida-san, we put out a call for questions on Twitter, and you responded in kind — thank you! Your questions, and Yoshida’s replies, follow: @PlayStation Will we have to finish the main campaign or reach a certain level to access Heavensward's main content? — John Fleury (@Behonkiss) March 2, 2015 Naoki Yoshida: If you already own A Realm Reborn and you get Heavensward, you’ll be able to at least enter Ishgard. The new jobs added in Heavensward are not tied to the main story, so those are accessible as well. In terms of the story, if you want to enjoy the Heavensward story arc, since it’s tied to the upcoming 2.55 patch, it’s a prerequisite to have finished that content. If a player had stopped playing around patch 2.2 or 2.3, I’d recommend choosing one of the new jobs and leveling that up while catching up on the story, then transitioning into Heavensward. @PlayStation What changes are going to be made to existing jobs? When can we expect the promised Benchmark? #FFXIV — niwaar (@niwaar) March 2, 2015 Yoshida: It’s tricky to say, but there will be changes applied to each job. One common change is that the job quest will continue from where it left off starting around level 52, so you’ll obtain new skills, spells and weapon skills. So when you go into combat you’ll have a wider range of selection in what kinds of actions you can take during battle. For example, if you play as a DPS job and you learn a new skill or spell, you can implement that into the command set you have built, or build a new one from scratch and strategize how you can apply these new skills. With some of the boss characters in Heavensward, you actually can’t fight them using your older skills — they might require you to know new skills that are only available after the level cap has been raised. This will create an opportunity for players to get together with the community to strategize how to beat these monsters. It’s safe to assume that you’ll be experiencing a new gameplay experience with the raising of the level cap. @PlayStation Will we see Ishgardians playing TT? Or will it be mostly traders/secretive in the areas since it's an "outsider" game? — Amber Grant (@Plutofaerie) March 2, 2015 Yoshida: It depends on how much dev time we allocate. In terms of Triple Triad, there will be 20 additional cards added in 3.0. Perhaps somebody in Ishgard is playing Triple Triad. Everyone’s been so focused on Triple Triad and Chocobo Racing that nobody’s doing the Hunt anymore! @PlayStation what are the winning numbers for the next jumbo cactpot? — Mature (@GregsVice) March 2, 2015 Yoshida: I participated and could have won first place… but I came in fifth. I was actually working that day, but rushed home to check the numbers thinking “I’m gonna win the jackpot!†but it turned out to be fifth place. But the winning numbers vary with each world. Only the Twelve know… Quotations provided through an on-site translator. They have been edited for brevity and clarity. View the full article

As the winter snow melts and we turn towards spring, baseball fans across the world are making their annual pilgrimage to Arizona and Florida for Spring Training. This year the team at MLB 15 The Show reported, too. We drove the MLB 15 The Show Bus to the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues in order to show off this year’s game to six of our favorite players: Yasiel “Wild Horse†Puig, Hunter “Captain Underpants†Pence, Eric “The Hos†Hosmer, Russell “The Muscle†Martin, Andrew “Cutch†McCutchen, and Adam “Stay Hungry†Jones. These guys had the time of their life picking up the sticks and seeing why baseball is better in MLB 15 The Show thanks to enhanced visuals, their favorite legends, licensed equipment, and Year-to-Year Saves. It was amazing to watch players training for a long season become so excited to play this year’s game. Which is why we can’t wait to show you all the great moments, baseball insights, and MLB 15 The Show gameplay we captured. We’ve got a whole lineup of amazing content that will be coming your way until our game launch on March 31st, but for now, check out the trailer batting in the leadoff spot: With such great athletes and so many game-changing features added this year, make sure you follow MLB The Show on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to ensure you catch every piece of content. And don’t forget everyone’s essential Spring Training ritual: pre-ordering The Show. Pick up the 10th Anniversary Edition — while supplies last (Physical/Digital) or Standard Edition (Physical/Digital) of MLB 15 The Show for PS4 to ensure you receive your DualShock 4 skin from Skinnit and — if you pre-order from GameStop — your bonus 6 item packs. Also be sure to check out all the archived MLB 15 The Show Developer Twitch Streams and be sure to follow the channel for updates on more live streams as we near launch. We here at PlayStation couldn’t be more excited that baseball is back. Play ball! View the full article

Set in Celestia several years after The Guided Fate Paradox, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum follows the defeat of the powerful Satanael, and yet the war between the angels and devils wages on. Shin Kamikaze, your average high school student, is stabbed in the heart by devils while walking home from school. Before he dies, Shin is saved by Jupiel, an angel from Celestia, who brings him to Ariael, a devil scientist, who shoves the Fate Awakening Crystal into his chest, thus making him God. He is then thrust into this conflict, and must make “Ultimate Choices†involving angel, human and devil lives — determining who will live, and who will die. As the player guides Shin in his journey of being god, each Ultimate Choice and decision made by Shin heavily affects the story. Shin’s choices not only affect the characters he interacts with, but also the fates of those around him in Celestia. Upon undertaking his role as god, Shin is tied to two girls, Jupiel and Ariael, who familiarize him with the war in Celestia and guide him through his journey to accepting his role as god. These two girls could not be any more different. His exclusively assigned angel, Jupiel, is a sweet, hardworking angel who loves stuffed animals. Born into a noble family, Jupiel faces the expectation to become a splendid angel like her older sister, and is tasked with training Shin how to fight. In contrast, Ariael is not concerned with the war much, if at all. Although she is a prisoner in Celestia, she is given the freedom to act as she pleases in exchange for creating a god and researching the Fate Awakening Crystal, which is her top priority. While both of these girls care for Shin, the way they interact with him is vastly different. Jupiel is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It is essential that Jupiel follows her sister’s orders and continues to be strong in the rough war, but she still supports Shin’s decisions whether it coincides with her sister’s orders or completely opposes them. Ariael doesn’t show her feelings as directly as Jupiel, and shows she cares in her own unique way. She often appears to only care about the crystal that she created, but she displays her concerns and always offers him instant noodles. By providing Shin with good, yet cold advice, Ariael leads him to coming up with alternative options and scenarios to the challenging choices he is forced to make throughout the game. In the war, Shin is also challenged by Hien Inugami, a human who is similarly turned into a god. Unlike Shin, Hien’s powers are awakened in the Netherworld by the Fate Awakening Crystal and in order to become God, two souls were sacrificed. He is only focused on battle and doesn’t care about those around him or the war — only to fight the strongest angels, and he becomes excited when Shin appears. As he battles Hien, Shin is faced with the reality of his existence. In order for Shin to become God, both Jupiel and Ariael sacrificed part of their soul to save him, and as a result, his powers are draining the souls of his two guardians. Presented with this harsh reality, Shin must cope with the weight of his decisions, and must ultimately make the choice of who he will be able to save and who will die. How will you choose between the two girls? Make your ultimate decision on March 17th. View the full article

Hey gang! This is Eric Pope from Harmonix. All of us at the studio are beyond thrilled to announce today that Rock Band will make its triumphant return to living rooms this year with Rock Band 4 for PlayStation 4! I’ve spent years as a community manager playing our various installments of Rock Band around the world with fans at every event you can imagine. I’m as excited as you are to have the next evolution of the franchise, Rock Band 4, on the current generation of console hardware. Since we released Rock Band 3 in 2010, Harmonix has branched out, developing projects in a number of new areas including motion control, PC and even VR. With every new project, the studio has challenged the perception of what a “music game†can be, and learned a lot in the process. With those lessons under our belt, we felt like we were prepared to dive back into our beloved Rock Band series, and actually push the genre forward. We’ve landed on a design that doubles down on the core Rock Band experience fans love, while innovating on gameplay in some super exciting ways that we’ll have more to say about a little later this year. I know what you’re wondering right about now: “How about all those Rock Band DLC songs I bought on my PlayStation 3?†That’s a fair question! We’ve always been committed to the idea that Rock Band is a platform, and as such Rock Band 4 will support all your previous DLC purchases at no additional cost! (Be sure to thank our friends at PlayStation, because we couldn’t pull this off without significant work from them!) Meet the TeamThe Rock Band 4 team is comprised of an immensely talented group of veteran game developers. I’m honored and humbled to work with these folks every day. This video piece will give you a chance to meet some of the passionate people behind the game and understand why we think the time is right for Rock Band’s return. Make no mistake, Rock Band 4 isn’t a simple “next-gen remaster†of an existing game- it’s the next step forward for the series. I can’t wait to rock out with you later this year! View the full article

Ever dreamed of being a Desert Ranger? Soon enough, that will become a reality. We’re excited to announce we’re bringing our crowdfunded RPG Wasteland 2 to PS4, after an award-winning debut on PC. With Wasteland 2 Game of the Year Edition, we’re eager to open up the wastes to an even bigger crowd, along with tons of enhancements and improvements. So what is Wasteland 2? In this hardcore RPG, you take control of a squad of four Desert Rangers — plus any followers you pick up along the way — to keep peace in the post-apocalyptic Arizona desert. But a larger threat looms on the horizon, and it will fall to your team to deal with it… or die trying. You may have heard of the original Wasteland, which dates back to 1988, and is the inspiration behind the Fallout series and the godfather of post-apocalyptic games. With the help of over 70,000 fans, we’ve delivered a sequel that’s been able to benefit from 25 years of innovations, taking the deep character building, engrossing game world, branching story and reactivity from games like Fallout, and tactical turn-based combat in the vein of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. More than anything, our focus is on reactivity. We crafted a game that truly reacts to your choices. Save someone from overgrown mutant honey badgers? Break into someone’s trunk of supplies? Shoot some punk in the street and deliver some “wasteland justice The game accounts for your choices and reacts accordingly, and no two experiences will be alike. The fate of the wasteland is in your hands, and the outcomes aren’t black and white. For the Game of the Year Edition, we’ve ported Wasteland 2 to Unity 5, the latest version of this highly versatile game engine, which has let us overhaul the game with some new visual effects, improved character models, upgraded environments, and Unity 5’s physically based shading to get more realistic lighting and shadowing. This is all something we wouldn’t have been able to do on the previous generation of tech. We are also not afraid of a rich narrative and memorable characters. Wasteland 2 is full of interesting and quirky personalities to interact with, logbooks and lore items to uncover, and detailed descriptions of the environments you’re exploring. We’ve even managed to go back and add new voiceover for key characters and story moments. We want the wasteland to be a place you really feel immersed in, and that goes beyond just graphics. Of course, that’s all great, but how does it play? In this new edition, we’re beefing up our existing gameplay and adding some new features. You’ll be able to customize your squad even more with our new Perks and Quirks (traits) to add unique bonuses and characteristics. Our new Precision Strike (aimed shots) system will let you target individual body parts to cripple or stun enemies, or shatter their armor so you can mop them up, giving you even more options in combat. And you’ll need those options, because we’ve been hard at work hand-crafting each battle you’ll find yourself in. With Wasteland 2, it was our goal to deliver our fans a game they wanted, and we were honored by PC World’s Game of the Year endorsement along with all the other accolades we received. With the Game of the Year Edition, we are totally thrilled to be able to bring that same hardcore gameplay to the PlayStation crowd in a bigger and better way this late summer 2015.
