We previously introduced Necrosoft Games‘ Gunsport to you back in April — it’s a cyberpunk volleyball with guns-style eSport for the PS4, coming in late 2015. After a successful showing at the PlayStation Experience, we’d like to finally reveal to you our first teaser trailer. In it, you’ll get a glimpse into the world of Gunsport – a world without war. In the alternate future of Gunsport, humanity has lost its taste for war, and regional pride now takes the form of sport and performance, much like football or soccer does in America and Europe. But each region, many of which were newly formed after the fall of war, has achieved its new found peace in a unique way. Today we will tell you about one of those: Neo Tokyo. Neo Tokyo reflects a Japan that is consumed by technology, much like you see in the real Tokyo of today. But Neo Tokyo also marries this with another real Tokyo trend – the desire by some to return to a time of master craftsmanship, strong national identity, and creation. This is why the Neo Tokyo you’ll see in Gunsport appears to be so analog focused – with neon signs, personally crafted automobiles, and buildings that are allowed to wear down and show their character, without losing their functionality. Everything in Neo Tokyo was hand crafted to bring out its unique flavor. Neo Tokyo also values a strong sense of group identity, which you’ll find in our characters, which we’ll be introducing at a later date. The current Neo Tokyo characters you see in the trailer, on the right side of the screen, are… shall we say apprentices in the game of Gunsport. Where you might consider these players to be initiates, or street punks, our final characters are masters, sponsored by the Yakuza for their prowess and what they represent to the national identity. That doesn’t mean they always go along with what others say, though. The future of GunsportIn this trailer you’ll also catch a few seconds of the Blue Cambodia background, as well as our team from the People’s Republic of Oakland (on the left), which is a new city-state in the US. There will be more stages and characters revealed as we move forward – we are trying to make this a very international game, as we are a very international team. No two people at Necrosoft even live in the same country! What we’re showing you here in this trailer is our prototype – since its creation we have been working hard to revamp and update all our backgrounds, characters, and we hope you’ll like what we have in store. The game is tough, it’s hard, it’s fast, and since each team has its own stage, its own weapon set, and its own personality, we think it will provide a fair amount of variety. Please feel free to follow our progress as we work on Gunsport via @NecrosoftGames on Twitter. We hope you like the trailer, and may all your shots be true! View the full article

Hey everyone – this is Tom Happ, the sole developer of Axiom Verge. I did all of the art, music, design, animation, and programming as a labor of love. After 5 years of working on Axiom Verge in isolation, I’m finally getting close to launch. I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve been able to make as a team of 1, but the ultimate judges will be you, the players. One of the newest features I added was a Speedrun Mode. For years I’ve loved watching ridiculously skilled players 100%-ing great games like Super Metroid, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee, and more. The recent AGDQ festival also made me think deeply about creating features specifically for the speedrunning community. To understand how Speedrun Mode works, it’s important to understand a little about Axiom Verge. In Axiom Verge, you play as Trace, a scientist who wakes up after a lab accident in a strange, alien world. Similar to classic games like Super Metroid, Master Blaster, Bionic Commando, and Contra, the game involves a mix of exploration, new weapons and powerups, new enemies to battle and epic boss fights. As you make your way through the world, you also encounter a number of secret areas that are randomly generated each game – both the location of these secret areas and the actual layout are procedurally generated so no two playthroughs will be entirely the same. In addition, some creatures in the world behave erratically and randomly. When people play normally, a big part of the fun of the game comes from exploration and discovering all of the secrets. Speedrunners, though, want to know that everything is where it’s supposed to be. It’s important that random elements are minimized so that every playthrough is comparing apples-to-apples. Originally, I considered just making the game the same for everyone on every playthrough, but I decided that that would take away some of the challenge and replayability. So instead I created a separate mode for speedrunners where all of the random elements are based off of the same seed number every time you play. So when you’re playing through in speedrun mode, every enemy is in its place, and there are no secret areas to serve as a distraction from the main game. Click here for more screens Another feature that is important for speedrunners is being able to bypass dialog quickly. For regular players, there is an interesting storyline that falls into place as Trace makes his way through the alien world. Not everything is always as it seems, and I don’t want to spoil anything beyond that. But speedrunners will have seen all of that already. They don’t want to keep tapping the X button repeatedly just to skip past the dialog – they just want to keep going, so I’ve set it up so Speedrun Mode works that way. The ability for speedrunners to track how they’re doing at certain points in the game is also really important. Fortunately, the boss fights serve well as landmarks along the way. So in addition to having a timer (which is based on elapsed frames rather than real time in case there are subtle differences between the speed at which the game runs) always going in the upper-left hand side of the screen, players will also be able to see how long it took them to reach each of these milestones. For players who don’t necessarily want to compete with the best of the best to squeeze out as much time as possible, this feature also lets people set more modest goals for themselves. Try to beat your time to reach and defeat the first boss, the second boss, and so on. Last but not least is Playstation Share. I cannot wait to watch players streaming their runs on Twitch and ultimately having them displayed on sites like speedrunslive.com or speeddemosarchive.com. Speedrun Mode is just one of the features I’m adding to Axiom Verge to make it the ideal game for diehard fans of the genre. Axiom Verge has been a passion project of mine for a really long time, so it will be very exciting to experience it with people who share my love for those classic games. If you’d like to stay up-to-date on the latest info on the game, please follow me on Twitter at @AxiomVerge and sign up for my newsletter on the Axiom Verge website! View the full article

The developers of the open-ended RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt describe their bold creation as a “morally indifferent†fantasy world, but it’s difficult to illustrate the true breadth of that claim. The world of The Witcher 3 is violent, desperate, dark, beautiful, and palpably old. It teems with quests and hidden dangers, alongside gritty heroes and the wrongdoers to match them. Playing Wild Hunt on PS4 for the first time, its world came to life in unexpected ways, but delivered a consistently rewarding introduction to a rich tale. Those new to the Witcher series need not slink away, overwhelmed — The Witcher 3 is designed with you in mind. It begins with a prologue that deftly establishes the important characters and the stakes of the conflict around them. You play as a slayer of monsters — a Witcher — one in a long line of highly-trained, mutated beings that seek out and destroy threats against humanity. This background has gifted (or cursed) hero Geralt of Rivia with an unnaturally long life, and a set of skills suitable for his profession. At the onset of The Witcher 3’s story, Geralt and his old master Vesemir are tracking a mutual friend (and in Geralt’s case, former lover) named Yennefer of Vengerberg. This raven-haired sorceress sent a cryptic letter to the pair and little else, leaving Geralt and Vesemir to track her down on horseback. This scene quickly reveals the open world, which feels almost impossibly alive as Geralt and his mentor ride down dirt paths and weave through rich forests in search of clues. Peasants tend to their work, children dash through villages, and birds take flight from rustled trees. The attention to detail is admirable, and that extends into Wild Hunt’s combat system. Danger lurks in all corners of the world, and comes in forms both human and otherwise. At the start of Wild Hunt, Geralt is armed with swords of steel and silver — best used to dispatch men and monsters, respectively. When in combat, Geralt can unleash light and heavy strikes, dodge in any direction, and parry incoming attacks. A perfect parry will result in a riposte (counter), giving Geralt a temporary edge over his opponent. But Witchers have much more than blades to their name. Geralt’s order has a basic understanding of magic (simple gestures called “Signsâ€) and alchemy, both of which have a tremendous impact on combat. At first, Geralt has access to five Signs that can serve both offensive and defensive purposes. Quen, for example, forms a protective shield around its caster that can absorb one attack. Igni, on the other hand, casts a spray of fire before the Witcher in a glorious display of smoke and embers. Geralt can also utilize a variety of potions and bombs to complement his swordplay. But keep in mind that reaping the benefits of alchemy requires ingredients, which can be scavenged from the world or purchased at one of many shops or inns. The PS4 version of Wild Hunt looks gorgeous, whether Geralt is spurring his horse Roach through sweeping fields or just relaxing at the pub. The characters — including minor roles — are expertly written and acted, which bolsters an already impressive feeling of authenticity in the game world. In fact, some of The Witcher 3’s best moments come from random conversations between Geralt and the villagers, which give players several dialogue options for a branching narrative. The team at CD Projekt Red has created something quite remarkable with The Witcher 3; a fitting endeavor, given the quality of the previous two adventures and the legacy that Wild Hunt will follow on May 19th. Hi! Our names are Uli Wanitschke, Game Director for Silence, and Marco Hüllen, Lead Designer of the game. Together with a team of approximately 20 highly talented developers, we’re making Marco’s concept for Silence: The Whispered World 2 become a reality. We’re all huge adventure game fans here at Daedalic Entertainment. We grew up with the likes of Monkey Island, and we all feel that the genre is alive and well. However, we also believe there’s a lot of room for modernization within the genre, while at the same time not abandoning its roots. What springs to mind first is Silence’s visual style. At Daedalic, we have an incredible art department, drawing beautiful backgrounds, locations etc. We used to show these in 2D games. For Silence, however, we now use 3D technology, by following a method we call “camera projection.†We place 3D objects and 3D characters in 3D environments, but then project 2D art on everything. Marco calls this ‘three-dimensional artwork’ when creating all these magnificent backgrounds. This procedure allows us to maintain the high detail level of our hand-drawn art, while still being able to use the benefits of 3D game design. Puzzle design for us is the biggest part of the game that will see a significant makeover to how we usually expect games in this genre to be. We have designed puzzles in a way that makes them part of the story experience. Puzzles are supposed to never keep players in Silence from moving forward within the story. They’re designed in a way to let them be solved intuitively while also being part of the current on-screen experience. So, players are supposed to explore the environment around them, listen to dialogue, talk to other characters and observe what’s happening around them — just as they’re used to in adventure games or RPGs. The puzzle solutions are always kept on a logical, comprehensible level, and stay within the current area. This also means that we won’t be needing an inventory. Players can focus on one puzzle at a time, and one item at a time. Thus, we’re eliminating puzzles for which you have to try a huge number of item combinations to find the answer, for example. Silence will feature two playable characters — Noah and Renie — as well as an important sidekick named Spot. Noah and Renie will both come with different abilities, which players need to consider in order to solve puzzles. Noah is a tall, 16-year old boy. So he’ll be much stronger, for example, than his younger sister Renie, who is only six years of age. Renie won’t be able to tell left from right yet, however, she’ll be much more curious and thus fearless than her brother. That can be a good thing in a game! Spot will be accompanying both characters. When players switch freely between Noah and Renie, Spot will run over to the chosen character as well. He’ll be able to shift his shape into all kinds of things, and thus can be used just like a Swiss army knife to be the piece that was missing to solve a puzzle. Besides, he can explore his environment on his own, and will mostly come up with a very individual reaction, even depending on the current shape he’s exploring the world in. This way, he’ll shed additional light on things — and cause some cute moments. Now what’s this all for? Well, the game will take you to a fantasy world — Silence, or sometimes also called The Whispered World — from which Noah and Renie will have to escape. Noah has been to this world once before, but he didn’t know it still existed. He knows that it’s a beautiful place only on first sight. What he doesn’t know yet, though, is that Silence has turned into a more hostile place since he visited it last. It will be Noah’s task to save Renie from this place — and to find out how and why the Whispered World has managed to endure. View the full article

Hello from all of the DONTNOD development team. We’re still hard at work at the studio but would like to share the second Life is Strange Dev Diary for you to see more of the game we’ve been creating here in Paris. This second video from the three part series is called The Butterfly Effect, and it explains everything you need to know about Max’s ability to rewind time — including how the concept originated and exactly how rewinding time in Life is Strange works. If you want to ask us any questions about the game we’re hosting a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, January 27th at 6:00am Pacific / 2:00pm UK time. Hope to see you there! Thanks for all the support and kind comments so far. The first episode is being released in just 7 days and counting, the wait for Life is Strange is almost over and we can’t wait to hear what you think. View the full article

Well, it took a few years to get here, but I’m happy to say that The Order: 1886 went gold last week! It’s almost hard to believe that the game is wrapped up. There are definitely times when we miss the madness that takes place when finishing a game. From our first initial pitch of the project back in 2010, to growing our team over the last four years, we have poured all our energy and passion into this game and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it. Back at PlayStation Experience in December, we were able to finally show a long demo of the game that encompasses the many things we have revealed until now; Neo-Victorian London, The Order, its Knights and their weapons and technology, and their struggle against the Rebellion and the Half-Breeds. We still have a lot more to tell you before launch, but today we’re presenting a brand new trailer that we hope will whet your appetite; a glimpse into the conspiracy that has been slowly brewing in the city of London. From the whole team at RAD, a very big thank you to all for your support and encouragement. We’re looking forward to letting everyone get their hands on the game on February 20th. We are excited to announce that The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited edition will be arriving on PS4 on Tuesday, June 9th! This marks the first time in the series’ history that you’ll be able to play an Elder Scrolls game on PlayStation with your friends. Tamriel Unlimited features all the major updates that the game has seen on PC over the last year plus many important changes that will be rolling out in the coming months. Click here to learn more on PlayStation.com The biggest change coming with Tamriel Unlimited is that you will no longer need a game subscription to play! Because we are removing the requirement for a monthly game subscription, you will now need to ensure you have an active PSN account with PlayStation Plus to play ESO as long as you like. If you’ve played ESO on PC, you’ll immediately notice the major changes made to the game’s user interface. The game now caters to your DualShock 4, and feels closer to experiences you’ve had with past Elder Scrolls games on consoles. One of our biggest changes arriving in time for ESO’s PS4 launch is the addition of the Champion and Justice systems. The Champion System is a totally new progression system for max-level characters, while the Justice System, which allows you to steal, murder, and be brought to justice if you’re caught! Stop there, criminal scum! Tamriel Unlimited also debuts ESO’s new optional membership package, ESO Plus. With this premium membership service, players will be granted free access to all of the game’s DLC game packs; bonuses to XP, gold, and crafting; and a monthly allotment of Crowns to purchase items from the Crown Store. What’s the Crown Store, you ask? This is an all-new merchant store to ESO full of optional cosmetic and convenience items you can purchase for Crowns, a new currency allowing you to buy content directly from PlayStation Store. You’ll be able to fully enjoy ESO without being a member, but we think you’ll really enjoy the benefits if you have fun playing the game. Those that don’t enroll in ESO Plus can still expect free patches that implement fixes and other improvements along with optional DLC offerings you can purchase to add more adventures to the already-enormous game. Between now and the game’s launch, we’ve got plenty more to share on Tamriel Unlimited — including details on when you’ll first be able to play the game in Beta. On behalf of everyone at ZeniMax Online and Bethesda, we look forward to having our Elder Scrolls fans in the PlayStation community join our adventure. See you online in June! View the full article

Hey PlayStation Nation, we have been listening to you and want to share some great news with you. Later on today we’re bringing the Plex service to PS3 and PS4 today in the US, Canada and Latin America. I have actually seen the app in action and it’s pretty sweet. For those not familiar, Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any device. Whether it’s your movie and TV show collection, your music library or your photos and home videos, Plex makes all your media beautiful by automatically incorporating movie posters, plot summaries, album covers and descriptions. Plex also allows you to share your media collection across all major platforms and devices as well as with your friends and family. At launch, the app will only allow you to stream your videos, but the ability to stream your music and photos will be coming shortly. Plex for PlayStation is currently available for free to Plex Pass subscribers. In the future, it will be made available, for a fee, to those without a Plex Pass. In addition to the PlayStation app, a Plex Pass also gives you exclusive premium features and early access to new ones. To get more information about how the app will work and a general FAQ, please click here. Enjoy!!! View the full article

Greetings, PlayStation gamers! My name is Matt “Bayohne†Hilton and I’m on the Final Fantasy XIV community team. We’re extremely excited that Part 1 of our latest Patch 2.5, titled “Before the Fall,†is now live! As with each major update, there is a lot of exciting content to tackle and I’d like to introduce PlayStation Blog readers to some of the major points to experience. First off, if you haven’t seen it, check out the Patch 2.5 – Before the Fall trailer! We’ve got new dungeons for you and your fellow adventurers to challenge, including the massive “Keeper of the Lake!†Here you’ll be tasked with climbing inside the wreckage of a giant Garlean airship that was destroyed by wyrm lord Midgardsormr. The remains of the wyrm lord are still wrapped around his defeated foe to this day… The final chapter of the Crystal Tower story also makes its debut and sends players into the World of Darkness, where familiar Final Fantasy bosses await. Will your alliance of 24 adventurers be able to overcome the Cloud of Darkness? The primal elder Odin has been spotted once more in the Shroud and adventurers have been asked to investigate. You know what that means? It’s time to form a party to try and take him down! This special battle was originally created for our global fan events, but now it’s available for everyone to try — and it’s even harder than before. Of course, everyone’s favorite Manderville man makes his return as well! Hildibrand — agent of enquiry, inspector extraordinaire — is hot on the trail of the phantom thief and it’s up to you to assist in solving the case! It seems that Gilgamesh has returned with even more arms than before… each wielding a different weapon, too! Maybe we should talk this out??? We’ll also be launching Patch 2.51 in February, featuring the Manderville Gold Saucer! If you’re a Final Fantasy VII fan, you may find a lot of similarities here from the Gold Saucer there! Mini-games, chocobo racing (that you’ll actually control yourself!) and even a full version of the Triple Triad card game from Final Fantasy VIII will be playable! (I can’t wait to spend a ton of time here… fighting bosses and saving the world can wait a bit!) As I mentioned earlier, this is just a look at “Part 1†of our Patch 2.5 release. Before the Fall Part 2, set to release in March, will conclude the main storyline that began with A Realm Reborn and prepare players for the release of Heavensward, our first expansion! This is just a brief look at what’s available to play and there is much more waiting for you to experience. What’s that? You don’t currently play FFXIV, but you want to try it out? Well, perfect, because we have a 14-day (get it?) trial available for free on PS4 and PS3! It’s a great opportunity to jump into the realm of Eorzea and take the first steps of your adventure! Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn 14-day trial (PlayStation 4) Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn 14-day trial (PlayStation 3) Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to start tackling some of this new Patch 2.5 content! Greetings, citizens of Earth — I’m here to talk about, uh… Citizens of Earth. Errr, right! Today, ATLUS and indie developer Eden Industries will put you in the role of the second-highest bureaucrat on the planet, the Vice President of Earth. But don’t let the politics fool you, because there aren’t any in the game. It’s a retro-inspired RPG through and through, where as the VP you have to go around and figure out why the world has gone mad. But here’s the deal. When you’re a career politician, you don’t get your hands dirty, you make other people do it for you. As the VP, your job will be to recruit as many citizens as possible and use their special abilities to round out your party. There are more than 40 citizens total, but you can only bring three of them with you at a time. And in addition to basic combat skills, the citizens also have special talents that can be utilized to help outside of combat. Deep in a dungeon and need some health items? Have your Brother order some health items from FedUPs delivery. Difficulty too easy/hard? Check in with the School Mascot. Tired of traveling on foot? The Used Car Salesman can hook you up with a sweet ride! And then there’s the combat: it’s not quite as simple as mashing “Attack†for every fight. Every skill either depletes or replenishes energy — the more damaging or powerful skills require more energy, so it’s best to put a bit of thought into your attacks beforehand. Of course, if you really wanted to, you could avoid combat as much as possible — there are no random encounters in Citizens of Earth, you can see every enemy on the world map. If you’re quick enough, you can slip through unscathed! Alternatively, if you’re overly powerful for some enemies, you can send your citizens charging through their ranks and earn XP without even having to go into combat! Sounds pretty awesome, correct? Correct! But we want you to start off on the right foot, so we put together a list of some of our favorite citizens to have in your party: Baker — He has a lot of funny lines in the game and is just a really well-rounded character that gets fire elemental attacks early on. Plus, you can score some super useful baked goods from him. Handyman — There’s no skating around this, he’s seen some… things… in his life, and his world-weary demeanor leads to some great interactions between him and the Vice President. Plus, if there’s a broken door blocking your egress, the Handyman’s got you covered. Oh, plus his combat philosophy is “there’s no problem a power tool can’t fixâ€, and let’s not forget about the healing powers of duct tape. Pilot — Straight out of Top Gun and a total badass. Once recruited, she can fly you around to different map locations making life much easier. And there may be no greater joy than watching her turn on the afterburners on some dirty hippies. Musician — They must’ve pulled him from a back-up band, because the Musician is an excellent support class. The dulcet tones of a funky bass line will heal your party over time, while his inspiring pop-ballads will damage enemies every turn. The Cat Lady — She loves cats more than the internet does. So much so that her abilities scale with not just her energy but the amount of Cats she has on her. The additional resource management takes some strategizing, but like her 2-story in-home cat gymnasium, it’s worth it. The Captain — Yarr! This heavy damage dealer is the scourge of the seven seas! …And also the scourge of various lakes and streams, and at least one fjord! Plus, he’s a %&$@ pirate! What’s not to like!? Hey! This is Jakub from Grip Games. We are ready to release our upcoming adventure-puzzle game Unmechanical: Extended, which we have been working on with our colleagues from Talawa Games and Teotl Studios, for PS3 and PS4. Unmechanical: Extended will launch on February 10th and will cost you only $9.99. The game will also offer cross-buy, so if you buy it once, you’ll be able to download it on both PS3 and PS4. If that’s not enough, we’ll be offering a short initial 20% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers. If you have missed our initial announcement of Unmechanical: Extended, you should know that it’s an adventure game with a lot of puzzles. You will play as a little robot that has been kidnapped into a strange underground complex and has to find his way out. On your journey, you will discover many secrets of that place, you’ll meet several mysterious characters and you will solve puzzles. A lot of puzzles. Unmechanical: Extended is all about the experience. You can discover the gorgeous non-linear levels at your own pace — whenever you encounter a new puzzle, it feels more like a natural problem to solve, using your wits, than a barrier that the game has thrown at you. Many of the puzzles will require some out-of-the-box thinking and the process of trying to find the solution is just as important as progressing the story. Speaking of the story, this version of the game contains an exclusive second story mode, called “Extended,†where you will return to the Unmechanical complex once again to unravel even more mysteries and to save your friend. If you want to know more about Unmechanical: Extended feel free to ask me here in the comments section. We’re looking forward to see how you like the game! View the full article

Hey PlayStation Nation! Brian Michael Bendis here again, co-creator of the POWERS comic books and executive producer of the show, and I have some big updates from the set of POWERS, the first original live-action series for PlayStation Network. I’m happy to report that production has wrapped on all 10 episodes of POWERS. Under the skillful hands of our showrunners Charlie Huston and Remi Aubuchon, our amazing directors, writers, cast and crew, the episodes are coming together beautifully. As I sift through different cuts of the episodes and the raw footage, I’ve been hearing from our cast on the set about how much fun everyone has been having. They battled the Atlanta weather and the flu and they pulled together and really gave it their all. So it is my honor and privilege to officially tell you that PlayStation will be releasing the first three episodes on March 10th followed by the debut of a new episode every Tuesday on PlayStation Store. Stream the first episode for free on PlayStation Store or at playstation.com/powers and the full season will be available free to members of PlayStation Plus…which you should have already because it’s awesome. As we head toward the launch date I will be updating you on all kinds of special surprises and giveaways. For instance, for those of you looking to get a head start into the POWERS universe, this Wednesday, January 21st at your local comic book store or at comixology.com you can pick up a brand-new POWERS number one…its double-sized story for the regular price. This is a perfect place for new readers and old to hop on board the world of POWERS. And you can catch me tonight on Late Night with Seth Meyers talking more about the show. Yes, it is very weird to even type those words. Be sure to also follow the official pages on Twitter and Facebook for more fun extras. Thank you to everyone who has been sending me notes on Tumblr and Twitter about their eager anticipation for the show. I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate that. We think of you during the long hours…we really do. So, it’s not going to be too much longer… March 10th!! I leave you with the key art from the series. It’s just a little tease, a little taste, of what’s to come over the next couple of months. See you online…and if I killed you in GTA V, I’m sorry (not really). View the full article

Ever since we announced Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, nearly every fan I’ve heard from at trade shows, on Twitter, in the comments, or on the forums has asked one question: when is it coming to PS4? Well, we appreciate your patience, and today we have some good news for all of you: not only are we bringing The Pre-Sequel to PS4 on March 24th, but Borderlands 2 is coming along with it! Both titles will be available in one package as Borderlands: The Handsome Collection for $59.99. The Handsome Collection has both games running in gorgeous HD and looking pretty damn great, at a resolution and performance level never before seen in Borderlands on consoles. Beyond that, The Handsome Collection also has another cool first for Borderlands: four-player split-screen! Yup, four friends can hang out on the couch and play in split-screen on a single TV with The Handsome Collection, in Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel. Have you already started Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and/or Borderlands 2 on PS3 or Borderlands 2 PS Vita? Don’t worry: using cross-save functionality, you’ll be able to transfer your save to and from PS4 to pick up right where you left off, along with your leveled-up character, Badass Rank, and everything else you worked so hard for. But what about the DLC? Well, that’s all included, too. Yup, The Handsome Collection includes ALL of the add-on content for both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, which is a heck of a lot of stuff. To give you an idea of just how much we’ve stuffed into that little box, here’s a list of everything you’ll get in addition to the base games: Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty (campaign add-on) Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage (campaign add-on) Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt (campaign add-on) Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep (campaign add-on) The Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack (level cap increase) Gaige the Mechromancer (playable class) Krieg the Psycho (playable class) Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2: Digistruct Peak Challenge (level cap increase & challenge arena) Creature Slaughter Dome (challenge arena) T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest (Headhunter Pack) The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler (Headhunter Pack) How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day (Headhunter Pack) Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre (Headhunter Pack) Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax (Headhunter Pack) Character Customization Packs Collector’s Edition Pack Commando Madness Pack Commando Supremacy Pack Commando Domination Pack Siren Madness Pack Siren Supremacy Pack Siren Domination Pack Gunzerker Madness Pack Gunzerker Supremacy Pack Gunzerker Domination Pack Mechromancer Madness Pack Mechromancer Supremacy Pack Mechromancer Domination Pack Assassin Madness Pack Assassin Supremacy Pack Assassin Domination Pack Mechromancer Steampunk Slayer Pack Gunzerker Dapper Gent Pack Psycho Dark Psyche Pack Psycho Madness Pack Psycho Supremacy Pack Psycho Domination Pack Siren Glitter and Gore Pack Commando Haggard Hunter Pack Assassin Stinging Blade Pack Mechromancer Beatmaster Pack Gunzerker Greasy Grunt Pack Psycho Party Pack Siren Learned Warrior Pack Commando Devilish Good Looks Pack Assassin Cl0ckw0rk Pack Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack (playable class) Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught (level cap increase & challenge arena) Shock Drop Slaughter Pit (challenge arena) Upcoming Season Pass Content (playable class) Upcoming Season Pass Content (campaign add-on) Back when Borderlands 2 came out in 2012, it launched alongside a pretty extravagant Collector’s Edition that some of you might have been able to snag. With Borderlands 2 and all of its add-on content coming to next-gen, we knew we had to top ourselves. And so, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will receive an extremely limited Collector’s Edition, the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition! Limited to only 5,000 units worldwide, the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition includes a remote controlled Claptrap steward bot that you’ll control with a companion app from your iOS or Android device. You’ll be able to play voice samples of some of Claptrap’s most iconic lines and look through a camera to see where Claptrap is headed, all while you control his every move (while balancing on one wheel)! The Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition also includes 12 really cool exclusive Vault Hunter lithographs, and a collectible steel case. It’ll be available for $399 at participating retailers, and we recommend getting a move on it if you’re interested — we don’t expect these to last long. Lastly, we’ll be talking more about The Handsome Collection during our panels at PAX South this week, and I hope we’ll see some of you in San Antonio. Even if you can’t make it, stay tuned for more details leading up to launch. See you on Pandora and Elpis! View the full article

Late last year we revealed that Ironclad Tactics would be coming to the PS4 in early 2015. Everything has gone according to plan, and Ironclad Tactics will be launching on PlayStation Store next Tuesday, January 20th! The game will be available for $14.99, and includes all of the available add-on campaigns as a free bonus. And, if you’re a PS Plus member like me, you’ll enjoy a 20% discount if you grab the game in the first week! In case this is the first time you’re hearing about it, Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots! Although it’s reminiscent of the tactics games and collectible card games that we’re all familiar with, we’ve done a lot to make it fast-paced, streamlined, and completely free from the microtransactions that seem to plague digital card games lately. It’s also completely co-op enabled, allowing you to switch between playing solo or with a friend over the internet with ease. We’re super excited to be bringing one of our best games to PS4, and hope you’re looking forward to it, too. View the full article

Hi Saints fans! We’re super excited that Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is about to launch next week on January 20th. Our teams had a tremendous amount of fun putting this game together, and we can’t wait for all of you to get your hands on it. We have certainly had a crazy, exhilarating trip with the Saints Row franchise, and none of us at Volition could have ever predicted how the Saints series would progress. I can assure you when the team was making the first Saints Row, none of us would have guessed we would eventually have a Saints game with things like Satan, musicals, armchair weapons and supernatural wings! This is what makes it so fun to work on the Saints Row series — we have the freedom to create over-the-top content with a complete focus on fun. Now that we are closing out the Saints Row IV story arc, we hope you will love this expansion pack as much as we enjoyed making it. We’re excited to bring new content to existing fans, and to bring Saints Row IV to PS4 as well! There are tons of things to do, all new places to visit in Hell, and a fun story to experience (regardless of how you chose the game to end). Enjoy your trip to Hell! View the full article

Admission: I’m a bona-fide horror nut. I love it. Can’t get enough. You name it, I’ll watch it: past-their-sell-by-date franchise sequels, grotty Eastern European video nasties, creepy found-footage indies, cliché-ridden teen slashers, and everything in between. So, PS4-exclusive interactive horror Until Dawn is right up my alley. Duly, last month I sat down with Jez Harris from developer Supermassive Games to pick his brains about the science of scaring poor innocent folk like you and I. He happily obliged, talking me through a few of the strategies the Guildford-based studio is employing to ensure you’ll need to keep a clean change of underwear close at hand when the game hits the shelves later this year. 1. Bring in the experts“We have Larry Fassenden and Graham Reznick as our script writers,†explains Jez. “They are horror encyclopaedias in human form and have worked on all sorts of acclaimed horror movies, like The Innkeepers and Stakeland.†He’s not wrong – these two know what they’re doing. If you’re curious and of a hardy disposition – check out The House of the Devil and The Roost too. 2. The element of surprise“What we’ve tried to do is ensure that if you’re a fan of horror movies it will feel familiar – and that’s absolutely deliberate,†says Jez. “What we want to do is put you in a playable horror movie. We want to make you feel like you know what’s going on and that you’re in your comfort zone. Then we can yank you out of it extremely hard as the twists and turns play out.†3. Always have willing test subjects“One of the things we realized very early on is that once we’ve been scared by something, that scare quickly diminishes every time you play,†Jez explains. “And of course we play the game an awful lot, so you start questioning whether something is scary, forgetting the fact that it scared the life out of you six months ago. So we do a lot of user testing. We get players in that are completely fresh to the game, so we can check that we’re still making an impact.†4. Harness the science of fear“We do a lot of work with galvanic skin response,†Jez continues. “We have testers strapped into apparatus that monitors their temperature and the level of moisture in their skin. We’ll sit and watch the data as the person plays the game, and if we get a good spike we know we’re doing our jobs right. And if those spikes correlate across a number of separate players then we can be confident we’re on the right track.†While these poor test subjects help the developers deliver on their promise, Jez – with a sadistic glint in his eye – is happy to acknowledge the team enjoyed a little schadenfreude too. “We’ve had some great fun seeing the video output of our user testing – guys who are sat there, playing the game peeking through their fingers, not being able to look at the next scene, telling themselves to ‘man up’. We haven’t induced any heart attacks yet, but I think we’re getting close!†5. Throw out the rulebookThe best horror movies keep the viewer guessing, eschewing cheap scares in favor of atmosphere and the unexpected. And that’s a rule that Supermassive seems keenly aware of. “We were aware from early on that we didn’t want the game to be an endless stream of jump scares,†Jez insists. “People just become numb to it.†“To make the horror as effective as possible you need to telegraph in some of the scares and then obscure others, otherwise players get wise to a formula. So a lot of Until Dawn is about the quiet dread of not knowing what’s going to happen next. You might think there’s a jump scare coming any second, and then there’s nothing for five minutes – when you’re not expecting it. It has more impact that way.†While I love the genre, I’ll freely admit to being a bit of a coward when push comes to shove. No matter how many horror movies I inflict upon myself, and how familiar I become with the genre’s structures and rhythms, I still watch them with the lights on, squirming, with a cushion close at hand. And having spent some time with the game, I’m happy to report that’s exactly how I’ll be enjoying Until Dawn too. “We’ve seen people at events playing with the full headphone set-up, and they’re literally falling over at what they’re experiencing!†says Jez, when I ask for permission to play the demo build like a lily-livered wet blanket – with the volume down and headphones off. “What we’re doing here is making a playable horror movie. How you’d sit and watch a horror movie at home is probably how you should play Until Dawn. For me personally, that would definitely be with friends – I wouldn’t want to do it on my own. I’d be too scared!†View the full article
