In last year’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, the series’ staple protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz manages to snap out of a coma, remove himself from the wheelchair he’s been confined to for decades, and quickly move on to his favorite pastime: killing Nazis. Seemingly an impossible feat… but by the time you complete Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, out today, you’ll realize it’s just another day at the office for Blazkowicz. The Old Blood is a prequel to The New Order offering the same high-intensity, story-driven, first-person action players have come to expect from the game’s developer MachineGames. The story unfolds as B.J. and ally spy Agent One begin an undercover mission to infiltrate the infamous Castle Wolfenstein (longtime fans of the series will appreciate MachineGames’ nods to the 2001 classic, Return to Castle Wolfenstein) in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. B.J.’s battles within Castle Wolfenstein are what legends are made of, but Castle Wolfenstein only represents the game’s first act: Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves. Serving as the warden of Castle Wolfenstein’s prison, Jäger might seem like the most sinister villain you’ll meet — until you reach the game’s second act, The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs. A renowned archaeologist in the Nazi party, Von Schabbs heads the party’s SS Paranormal division, and her passion for the occult will lead to very bad things. How bad? Have a look at the game’s new launch trailer embedded above. To help Blazkowicz through these near-impossible odds, MachineGames has added a number of weapons worthy of the FPS Hall of Fame. It begins with a multi-purpose metal pipe that can be used to traverse and break walls, and also execute enemies with one- and two-handed melee attacks. Of course The Old Blood has its fair share of memorable guns, too. The new bolt-action rifle packs a powerful punch and is perfect for long-range sniping. And if you find yourself in a real jam, take advantage of the Kampfpistole — a pocket-sized rocket launcher! Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is available today on PS4; you can download it from PlayStation Store for $19.99. For more detailed information on the game, check out all our game updates on Bethesda Blog. View the full article

Welcome back to PlayStation Underground, our online show about video games! Today, we go underground with Skullgirls: 2nd Encore, a spectacular fighting game with a ton of personality that’s coming to PS4, and PS Vita soon after. I crash on the couch with Lab Zero Games Designer Earl Gertwagen, who decimates me with the newest characters coming to the Skullgirls roster. These up-and-coming fighters include a wrestler inspired by Old English epic poetry, and a robotic cat girl. Truly, few fighting game lineups have quite this much flavor. Join Earl and I as we play just about 20 minutes of 2nd Encore on PS4, discussing everything from game balance to developer easter eggs. What does a fighting game built by fighting game fans really look like? Watch below! Let me know what you think in the comments, and remember that we’ll be back soon with more Underground in the weeks to come. Enjoy the show. View the full article

While working on Lost Orbit, we were faced with two seemingly opposing ideas. We wanted to create a lonely, unforgiving universe that followed the journey of a doomed astronaut. At the same time, as designers, we wanted to entertain and reward our players with sound mechanics and positive reinforcement. We wanted players to have fun. Trying to reconcile these two different elements of Lost Orbit was challenging. How can a player experience feelings of hopelessness, while enjoying their time in the game? The solution was a twisted and dark sense of humor, where tragedy and comedy merge using the design, narrative, and visual elements of death. Designing DeathIt is a difficult line between challenging a player and frustrating them. In Lost Orbit, it was clear that the game was most fun when played quickly. The ability to blast through levels is addictive, and is positively reinforced through upgrading your equipment. We found by raising the stakes, we were able to amplify the sense of speed in the game. Harrison is little more than a fragile sack of organs. Players will discover this all too quickly with one poorly timed turn or barrel roll. It’s in knowing that death comes instantly that successfully navigating any given level is so rewarding. You must be perfect in your efforts, and knowing what’s at risk makes every moment more intense. The speed and the stakes combine to challenge your reaction times. Often, you’ll barely have a moment to scream something unintelligible before you paint an asteroid with your guts, and therein lays the sick sense of humor. Narrating DeathGood designers want to immerse players in a world of their creation without boring them with endless cutscenes and backstories. The universe of Lost Orbit couples beautiful environments with the hopelessness of being stranded in space. It would have been easy for the game to take on a monotonously dark tone, but all too often games that take themselves too seriously end up being the biggest jokes. Max Payne, Total Recall (Starship Troopers, Robocop if you prefer…), Road Runner, and Monty Python have all mastered the art of fusing dark themes with comedy. We were inspired to do the same. In Lost Orbit, no one expects you to live. Light Spans away from nowhere, without equipment, support, food, or even a convenient way to go to the bathroom, you’re essentially doomed. Even your side-kick Atley, an alien space Probe, reminds you of this on a regular basis. Desperate to prove you’re talented enough to make it through, you’ll press on. When the split second juicy explosion abruptly ends your story and ambitions, you can’t help but laugh. It pulls you back to the reality of the situation: you barely had a chance to begin with. Illustrating DeathWhen we decided Lost Orbit was going to be a challenging game with insta-death, it became apparent that we were going to have to make death entertaining or risk a ton of invoices over broken gamepads and HDTVs. The inspiration behind the visual effects came from sources like Army of Darkness, Looney Toons, and Itchy & Scratchy. Harrison has packed inside his little suit, not only a skeleton, but all of his major organs, modelled and rigged with physics so they plop around the screen when released. In addition, he is crammed with so much blood, that in an instant, you’ll leave a lasting mark on any asteroid you meet. There are dozens of specific custom death sequences that we built in effort to keep losing fresh enough that it challenges you without becoming frustrating. “Good Frustrationâ€, we call it. It is some consolation that if you must die, you can at least make a big mess. In the end, the fragility of your life in Lost Orbit not only adds to the risk, and sense of speed in the game, but also sets up the potential for a well-timed laugh at your expense. It’s a strange way of diffusing the frustration that a challenging game presents, but it works in our case. Sometimes, even death can be a reward, if not for you, at least for the people pointing and laughing. Lost Orbit will launch on May 12th for PS4. We hope you’ll all enjoy our morbid little game. The team at Naughty Dog is excited that Left Behind, the critically-acclaimed and award-winning single-player chapter to The Last of Us, will be available as a standalone download via PlayStation Store. The Last of Us: Left Behind standalone will be available on both PS4 and PS3 starting May 12th for only $9.99. We will be dropping the price of the Left Behind Add-on on PS3 to the same price on that day as well. If you haven’t had a chance yet to check out The Last of Us, this is a nicely priced gateway to checking out the world and characters so many people (and critics) loved. While part of the story of Left Behind takes place during the main narrative arc of The Last of Us, I think some of the best and most touching moments of any game in recent memory occur during the prequel segments, as we follow Ellie and Riley as they sneak out of boarding school to visit an abandoned mall, getting one final chance to enjoy their friendship before Riley leaves to join the Fireflies. You can get more immersed into the story of Ellie and Riley in The Last of Us: American Dreams comic book, published by Dark Horse, co-written by Faith Erin Hicks and The Last of Us Creative Director Neil Druckmann, with interior art by Faith Erin Hicks. I highly, highly recommend it. We realize that most of Naughty Dog fans and readers of PlayStation.Blog will have probably already played The Last of Us and maybe even the Left Behind Add-on chapter — if you enjoyed the games, be sure to tell your friends that haven’t played this great introduction to The Last of Us. We’ve also included a two hour trial of the Factions Multiplayer mode. The Left Behind standalone game will have built-in upgrade paths through the in-game store to both the full Factions experience and/or the full game for The Last of Us. Below are the details on the upgrade possibilities on both PS4 and PS3 after you already own the Left Behind standalone game. PS4Full Factions Multiplayer$9.99Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack (if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)$29.99Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle$39.99PS3Full Factions Multiplayer$9.99Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack (if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)$19.99Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle$29.99These prices reflect US pricing. Hi. It’s Simon Byron from Curve Digital, and I’m here to tell you that Ultratron is coming to PS4, PS3, and PS Vita on May 12th. Also, I’m here to tell you what it’s like to be the oldest person alive. I was born in the 70s, which is a decade that no one really remembers because it was pretty grim. Genuinely, I struggle to think of anything good that happened during that time — it was broadly rendered in black and white, and the weather had the default setting of miserable. Things improved dramatically in the following decade. Color was discovered, for example. It was the decade of shoulder pads, big hair, linen trousers, and soft rock. It’s tempting to look back and laugh at People From The 80s, but many things we enjoy now can be traced back to that period. Particularly video games. The 1980s were the years that the video game arcades rose to prominence. Initially popping up on seaside towns, these imposing machines were worshiped by teenagers, drawn towards them with pockets full of change. Compared to now, these arcade cabinets were technically limited, meaning designers learned to innovate, creating stunning games within basic hardware confines. A modern-day doorbell probably has more oomph than some of the games back then. But what they lacked in visuals, they more than made up for in gameplay. We all have our favorites — but surely one game which has the ability to transport anyone of — ahem — a certain age back in time is Robotron 2084. Looking at screenshots of Robotron 2084 these days, it’s impossible to appreciate the sense of terror created by that particular cabinet. It popularized the twin-stick control scheme now used widely across a range of games and genres. Those who managed to digitally carve their initials into the high score tables were truly gods among teenagers. I could not tell you how much I spent on Robotron. But every single coin was worth it. Ultratron — which is out globally on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita (cross buy) on May 12th — is what happens when you take the spirit of Robotron but update it for the PlayStation generation. The last human has been slain by evil killer robots. You are the one remaining humanoid battle droid. Your mission: avenge the human race. Boost your battledroid with power-ups, buy cute but deadly pets in the shop. Blast your way through 40-plus glowing neon levels, avoiding Chasers, Turrets, Spawners, Minelayers, bombs, and bullets, and take on the four giant boss ‘bots of the Apocalypse:†Leiunitas, Bellum, Lues, and Letum. Whilst the core old-school gameplay remains, Puppygames has brought the genre bang up to date, with a host of unlocks and upgrades designed to keep players challenged way into the night. The visuals are hypnotic — modern, with a retro twist. There’s even a simulated CRT screen curve designed to mimic the displays of the era, which were the opposite of high definition. Ultratron will be available on all PlayStation formats on May 12th. We hope you enjoy being transported back in time — without the risk of accidentally splitting your parents up. In February, you wreaked Havoc, now get ready for Ascendance, the next DLC pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Available today on PS4 and PS3, Ascendance introduces four new multiplayer maps, a new directed energy weapon, and Infection, the next chapter in Exo Zombies. Click here to see the full gallery For the competitive multiplayer crowd, Ascendance’s four new maps — Perplex, Site 244, Climate, and Chop Shop — will take the fight to new destinations, ranging from an alien crash site beneath Mt. Rushmore to the corridors of a black market exoskeleton complex. But there’s more to the maps than just new environments: Ascendance introduces a new Exo Grappling ability, which allows players to rapidly reach an elevated vantage point. Players will be able to sample the new mechanic in an Exo Grappling ability playlist exclusively for Ascendance maps. Here’s a rundown of each map: Perplex Venture to the streets of Sydney and battle through a five-story modular apartment complex. With elevated vantages and tight corridors, Perplex is small-to-medium sized map that fits a variety of play styles. Construction drones will shake things up, however, as they shift apartment modules and create new strategic pathways. Site 244 An alien craft has crash-landed beneath Mt. Rushmore, USA, making for an awesome medium-to-large sized three-lane map littered with extraterrestrial debris. Gain a competitive edge by earning the map-based scorestreak to open an alien spore that enhances your perks and exo abilities. Climate Settle in to your dome away from home in Climate — a lush climate-controlled bio dome. With a circular layout with a central island structure for teams to fight for control of, Climate keeps the pace of the action high. The tides can turn, however, when the rivers begin to rage and become a treacherous obstacle. Chop Shop Discover the seedy underbelly of the unauthorized exoekeleton trade in Chop Shop, a medium-sized industrial complex with a devastating map-based scorestreak: the Advanced Repulsion Turret. Ascendance also continues the Exo Zombies story with Infection, a brand new chapter wherein the four survivors find themselves on the outskirts of the mutant-ravaged Atlas Corporation facility and facing new, never-before-seen enemies. The returning celebrity cast of John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, RED, Burn After Reading), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Titanic, Edge of Tomorrow), Rose McGowan (Planet Terror, Scream), and Jon Bernthal (Fury) fight tooth and nail through undead zombie hordes. To help them in their fight for survival, players will leverage an expanded arsenal of weapons and traps. And if you’re a longtime fan of the series, you might spot a familiar fast food chain within the zombie-filled ruins. That’s right, it’s time for another trip to Burgertown. Lastly, Ascendance introduces a new weapon to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer: the OHM directed energy hybrid weapon. Packing a powerful punch between its two switchable LMG and shotgun modes, the OHM is ideal for laying down suppressing fire or clearing out an objective. For more on Call of Duty, Destiny, Guitar Hero, Skylanders, and more, check out the Activision Games Blog and follow us on Twitter. View the full article

Hello again, PlayStation.Blog readers! Along with independent developer Mouldy Toof, we’re thrilled to let you know that The Escapists will be heading to PS4 on June 2nd! The award-winning, sandbox, prison-escape game features 6 uniquely themed prisons to escape from. Escaping won’t be easy, though. You’ll have to work around the strict prison schedule and avoid the unwanted attention of guards! You’ll need some cash to put your plan into action. Get a prison job or perform favor requests for your fellow inmates to earn those vital funds. You can then use them to barter with traders for tools and crafting supplies. Just make sure you find a good hiding place for your stash and pay attention during roll call to avoid cell shakedown — you wouldn’t want to lose that coveted shovel you’ve worked so hard to gather and craft! Once you’ve tried your hand at all 6 prisons, you can even try to escape from one of the most famous prisons in the world with the Alcatraz DLC prison! Many have tried to escape, many have failed. Now is your chance to add your name to this list of “famousâ€â€˜ escape attempts as you try and escape from one of America’s strongest prisons. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary has been rebuilt in The Escapists. Master the daily routine, plan your strategy, and execute your very own Alcatraz escape! The Escapists will be available to download on PS4 on June 2nd for $19.99 The Alcatraz DLC prison will be available for just $2.99. Thanks as ever for reading! We can’t wait to hear your glorious tales of escape! View the full article

Click here to see the full gallery With House of Wolves, Bungie aims to bring a bigger, more rewarding competitive experience to Destiny. In addition to three new Crucible maps (plus an exclusive fourth map for PS4 and PS3 owners), Bungie is shaking up the formula with more loot and more activities for high-level players. PS4 and PS3 owners will get Timekeeper, a close-quarters battleground set inside a mysterious Vex device amidst the arid dunes of Mars. Black Shield is a medium-sized map set on Phobos. Thieves’ Den is an intimate arena set in the tunnels under Venus. Widow’s Court takes the fight to Earth’s European Dead Zone, a striking thematic departure for Destiny — expect crumbling gothic spires, stained glass, and overgrown plant life. Across the board, Bungie is laser focused on making Crucible matches more rewarding. You’ll earn double the engrams and marks in Crucible matches, as well as guaranteed rewards for participating in the daily featured game. Not bad! Then there’s Trials of Osiris, a new weekly event designed to captivate high-level Crucible players with new challenges and exclusive payouts. The pitch: you gather your best gear and two friends to take on a punishing 3v3 Elimination challenge. The Trials of Osiris challenge opens up each Friday and closes each Sunday. These Elimination matches are tight, intense affairs where every kill counts. Fall, and you’ll need to be revived by a teammate (unless you’re a Warlock sporting that uber-handy Fireborn self-revive ability). The first team to win five rounds claims victory, though you’re free to keep competing again and again all weekend long. To participate in the Trials, you’ll need to buy a Trials Passage from Brother Vance, a new NPC in The Reef, House of Wolves’ new social space. This Passage works like a scorecard; once you’re ready to claim your hard-earned rewards, you’ll hand the Passage into Brother Vance for a shot at winning exclusive weapons and armor. Take note: the Osiris-themed gear is some of the best in the game. House of Wolves comes to PS4 and PS3 on May 19th. Got questions? Let me know in the comments! View the full article

Konnichiwa, everyone! We’re kicking off Golden Week the PlayStation way — with deals on Japan-inspired games, movies, and TV shows. During the Golden Week Sale, grab games like Resident Evil, Demon’s Souls, and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, films like Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Inuyasha, and shows like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon and more — all at a sweet discount, today through Monday, May 4th. We know fans have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get Freedom Wars themes on PS Vita. So in honor of Golden Week, we’re releasing two Freedom Wars themes for PS Vita today. You there! How’d you like to be an idol music star? On second thought, you look more like the behind-the-scenes type. How’d you like to make someone else an idol music star? Yes, I mean it! Well, today’s your chance. Did I mention you’ll need to save the world while you’re at it? So hurry up kid, and let’s take a glimpse behind the music. Omega Quintet is the first ever hybrid RPG/idol simulation game to hit PS4! You’ll play the manager of the idol group Omega Quintet, who is tasked to save the world from the dark forces known as Beep. The game is first and foremost an RPG, and I’ve already covered how you’ll take part in turn-based RPG battles with a set of interchangeable weapons, strategizing turn orders and attacks to gain the upper hand, and combining skills to unleash ultra-flashy, ultra-deadly Harmonic Chain combinations on the enemy. But now it’s time to take a look at what your idol group does when it’s taking a break from saving the world. In PVS Mode, you’ll lay your weapons down and turn the music up! Once you select from a variety of original songs in the Omega Quintet repertoire to perform, you can customize every bit of the performance. You’ve got the say in whether the whole group performs or just a few of them, but my favorite part is the choreography. On top of that, you can choose who’s singing for each moment of the song and even where the camera goes! The right performance is all about knowing who should get the solo and close-ups, but I’d definitely try to make every idol feel like a star — you don’t want jealous idols on your hands. Finally, did I mention you can join your idols onstage? Using the PlayStation 4 Camera, you can put yourself on the big screen behind the performers, dancing along to every move. Throw in the PlayStation Move controller and you’ll really make sparks fly with added special effects! Or you can use the regular controller to disrupt the main performance with items like bombs, which will temporarily fling the idols offstage. Believe me, it is consistently hilarious. Now, I’m no mathologist, but with up to five different characters, nearly a hundred different dance moves, and complete control of how the video is created, you can create literally KRILLIONS of unique performances. All this depth in the optional game mode just goes to show how much work has been put into all of Omega Quintet. So let your idol imagination run wild and create a PVS worthy of the stage — or blow your audience away with a completely off-the-wall visual cacophony of weird choreography. The choice is yours — and it’s sure to entertain! View the full article

Powers, PlayStation’s first ever scripted original series, delivers an exciting season finale today. Since the inaugural episodes launched on March 10th, the response from the PlayStation Nation has been every bit as awesome as we had hoped. In case you haven’t had a chance to watch Powers yet, we have a cannibalistic killer with unparalleled power on the loose, several characters on the cusp of life-altering decisions, and a vicious group plotting to murder Powers. The season has culminated into an epic finale that cannot be missed. For those binge watchers out there, you can devour the entire season with all 10 episodes available today on your PS4, PS3, or online on PlayStation Store. Don’t forget that PlayStation Plus members in the U.S. will be able to watch the entire season free. For those of you who may have skimmed past it in the store, here is a sneak peek of what you’ve missed this season, above. Share your thoughts on the show! Be sure to let us know what you think at @POWERStheSeries and tag #POWERSonPS. View the full article

Hello PlayStation fans! At long last am I able to share new and exciting details about Mighty No. 9, as Deep Silver announces a partnership with comcept and legendary designer Keiji Inafune to increase the reach and scope of this incredible, beloved title. Deep Silver will bring the title to retail this fall, with even more content for new and established fans around the world. Mighty No. 9 is truly a transformative experience for the 2D side-scrolling action genre, with deep roots in gaming spanning generations of gamers. Taking into account decades of design experience as well as tens of thousands of pieces of feedback from the Kickstarter backers (thank you!), comcept and Inti Creates have put together all of the best elements of 8 and 16-bit classics that you love, and infused them with fresh mechanics to reinvigorate the genre. With today’s announcement, we’re pleased to tell you that the game will release physically on PlayStation 4 as well as digitally on all three PlayStation platforms: PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 will launch simultaneously on September 15, 2015, with the PS Vita version coming shortly after. Comcept is continuing their hard work making Mighty No. 9 the best game possible. We’re excited for everyone to get their hands on the game, but in the meantime we’ve listed a couple of the specific features you can look forward to when the game launches on September 15th. Play through 12 Unique and Challenging Stages in a single player campaign. Unlock the New Game+ to add an additional two extra difficulty levels including a punishing Turbo mode. The Single Player Challenge mode with dozens of mini missions for the hardest of challenges. Boss Rush Mode: Play through each of the game‘s bosses, back to back, with a clock ticking to keep track of your best time. Show the world how Mighty you are in the 2 Player Online Race Battle where you compete online, racing through each stage together in a head to head battle – adding an all new twist on versus mode play that will give Mighty No. 9 life well beyond the single-player campaign. 2 Player Online Co-Op Challenge Mode: take on over a dozen missions online with a friend, playing as Beck and his partner, Call! Use Beck and Call’s different powers together in order to defeat these special challenges. Toggle between regular and 8-bit music: this game is a veritable who’s who of veteran game composers – Manami Matsumae, Takeshi Tateishi, Ippo Yamada. As such, Mighty No. 9 features an optional chiptune version of the entire game soundtrack which you can toggle on and off. Brand new Ray DLC which features a new stage with its own unique boss as well as a brand new unlockable playable character. Look for us as we showcase Mighty No. 9 at various events this summer! We’re pretty excited to share the world’s first look at the gameplay of Just Cause 3 with all of you here on PlayStation.Blog. Every explosion in the trailer pretty much speaks for itself, but before you hit the play button, there’s really only one thing you need to know: this is 100% gameplay, captured using cinematic camera angles. There is no scripting or staging, and you’re not watching cut scenes. Got it? Okay, now you can hit play. If you’re a longtime fan of the series, did you pick up on anything new? There are definitely a few nods to some of the ways we’ve upped the ante in Just Cause 3. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg — all this fiery chaos is really only a glimpse of the mayhem you’ll be bringing to the beautiful countryside of Medici, currently under the iron boot of its despotic ruler, General Di Ravello. But that’s where Rico Rodriguez, you, and a whole lot of firepower come in, right? And if you’ve never played Just Cause before, welcome aboard. Strap into your wingsuit and get ready to dive into restricted airspace, answer guns with even bigger guns, and tether a bus to a helicopter. More to come. View the full article
