  1. What’s up, PlayStation? Today, we’re happy to announce that a fourth Monster, Behemoth, and four new Hunters are coming to Evolve March 31st on PS4. These new characters look and play differently than anything in the game so far. And even if you don’t purchase these new Hunters or Monster, you can still play with and against them online — and against them while playing solo offline — giving all Evolve players a new hunting experience. So let’s take a look… BehemothBehemoth is a tank of a Monster that becomes a giant, destructive boulder and rolls through the environment for quick traversal. He has the most armor, the largest pool of health, and packs the biggest punch of any Monster in Evolve, making Behemoth extremely dangerous in close quarters. While he is the slowest of any Monster, his abilities allow him to control the movement of his opponents by trapping, stunning, or pulling them towards their demise. Torvald (Assault)Torvald is a cyborg out for revenge, and he has one job: deal as much damage to the Monsters as possible. At longer ranges he’s a threat with his back mounted Mortar Cannons, but he does the most damage in close quarters. Torvald’s Shrapnel Grenades pepper the target with weak spots, and his Autofire Shotgun follows up with multiplied damage. Crow (Trapper)Crow’s job is to locate and contain the monster. Gobi, his pet Batray, scouts ahead looking for the Monster. Once the Monster is located, Crow has a couple of new Trapper tricks up his sleeve. His Stasis Gun can be fired in two modes: rapid fire mode slows the monster for a very short amount of time, while a charged shot slows the monster for a longer period. His Kinetic Long Rifle can also be fired in two modes: rapid fire deals the most damage per second, but a charged shot bypasses a Monster’s armor entirely, digging into its permanent health pool. Slim (Medic)Slim’s DNA was genetically modified, so he joins Bucket as the only non-humans on the Hunter team. Slim is a combat medic tasked with keeping the team alive. The more damage Slim does with his Leech Gun, the quicker he can use his Heal Burst, which has the widest radius of all medics in Evolve. His Spore Cloud Launcher helps him get in close by eliminating the Monster’s ability to smell. And Slim’s Healing Drone can be sent to distant teammates in need of health. Sunny (Support)Sunny has a history with the Hunters: she previously worked with Abe and Parnell before the team arrived on Shear. As a support character, Sunny’s job is to protect the team. Her primary weapon is a Mininuke Grenade Launcher, which packs more punch in a single projectile than any other hand-wielded weapon in the game. She can deploy a Shield Drone to protect teammates while she fights, and she has a Jetpack Booster to use on teammates to quickly fly them away from trouble. Behemoth is free for those who pre-ordered Evolve from participating retailers, and is also available separately. The four new Hunters are available for purchase individually or together as a part of the Evolve Hunting Season Pass. Before you start facing off against Behemoth later this month, learn some tips to bring down Kraken, Evolve’s airborne Monster. Using aerial abilities to levitate and fly, Kraken uses dark energy to fight Hunters with bolts of lightning, banshee mines, a dangerous aftershock attack, and forceful vortex waves. The most important thing for taking down Kraken in Evolve is just that — bringing him down out of the air by whatever means necessary. While any coordinated Hunter team can defeat Kraken, one good lineup to use is Abe, Parnell, Hank, and Val, though Cabot and Caira is a great Support/Medic combo against Kraken as well. Use Val’s Tranquilizer and Abe’s Stasis Grenades to keep Kraken grounded and the odds in your favor. Because Kraken is so mobile, think of Hank’s Orbital Barrage as a defensive tool to deny Kraken mobility to specific areas and drive him towards your attacking teammates. If you happen to be playing as Cabot instead of Hank, coordinate with Parnell to combo your Damage Amplifier with Parnell’s Super Soldier Serum to do a crazy amount of damage, even with Kraken aloft. Parnell’s abilities are skill shots, so it’s important for Parnell to remain accurate, but this combination can do a massive amount of damage in a short amount of time. To avoid losing to Kraken, it’s important to stay separated in battle. Just one Level 3 Lightning Strike by Kraken can wipe out a group with low health or strikes against them, so never group up and conserve your jetpack fuel for quick getaways. If you happen to be playing as Caira, use the Acceleration Field to avoid Kraken’s attacks; the Lightning Strike takes a little time to charge, so use your jetpack and Acceleration Field to dodge it. Finally, avoid enclosed spaces, as Kraken can be devastating when chaining attacks against multiple targets. A good Aftershock followed by a Vortex can be brutal in close quarters, significantly damaging or even incapping multiple Hunters at once. View the full article
  2. Dig, if you will, this picture: you’re part of the world’s biggest and well-known idol group, warming up your vocals in sound check before performing for your adoring fans. The harmonies are sounding sweet and your choreography’s on point, when suddenly a gang of giant mutant rats and robots crash the party! What’s an idol to do? Luckily for the idols in Omega Quintet, a couple of rats and robots is nothing they can’t handle. As Verse Maidens in a world slowly being consumed by a force known as “Blare,†these idols don’t just sing and dance — they fight! Possessing abilities that turn their Mics into weapons, they’re the only thing stopping the Blare from destroying all of humanity, and I’m happy to announce here that you’ll be able to start saving the world in the first JRPG/idol simulation game for PS4 starting on April 28th! You’ll play as Takt, who finds himself in the role of bodyguard and manager of the Verse Maidens. There’s Otoha, your childhood friend, who makes up for her lack of experience with enthusiasm; Kyouka, the wise and responsible one; Kanadeko, who’s driven by impulse; Nene, the shy one with a fierce side in battle; and Aria, who is a vortex of mystery and confusion. Tasked with saving the world, these idols will have to build up their strength in turn-based combat. Each girl is proficient in special weapons that range from giant hammers to guns, BUT they can wield any weapon and build up their strength with each! So give the gun girl a spear and the fan girl some metal fists and diversify their lethal skills portfolio! Don’t get too confident — take too much damage and you’ll cause a Costume Break, tearing your idol’s clothes and drastically lowering their defense. Battles go a lot deeper than just weapons choice, though. Within each character’s turn, they can perform multiple attacks and skills in a row. Throw all your strongest attacks at the enemy at once or only hit them with your weakest attacks — how you fight will affect that character’s turn order. On top of that, Takt takes on a support role in battle. Paired up with one of the girls, he’ll provide follow-up attacks, defend, and knock back the enemy’s turn. With the right strategy, you can get two or more idols to have consecutive turns and activate Harmonics! With Harmonics, you can string multiple skills and attacks between idols, and maybe even unlock a Harmonic Chain — attacks that are stronger and flashier than any individual attack! You hear that? That’s the sound of manager and idols executing some deadly idol harmonies! Speaking of harmonies, what’s an idol group without some music? When you’re not out saving the world, you can enter PVS Mode, where you’ll shine as the Verse Maidens’ manager and choreograph your own idol performance. Choose camera angles, who performs, what outfits they wear, who gets the solo, and, of course, the choreography. With almost a hundred moves that range from air guitar-ing to graceful kabuki, every performance is unique. (We’ve spent a lot of time messing with this at IFI headquarters). You can even throw yourself up on the big screen with PlayStation 4 Camera and add special flavor with the PlayStation Move controller. Or use the regular controller to wreak havoc upon the performance with some truly ridiculous items. When you’re done, sit back and watch the performance, save it, and use the PlayStation Share function to show it to the world! I hope you’re not getting stage fright, because humanity is gonna need you and the power of music to restore balance to the world on April 28th. Build up your idols’ battle prowess, master Omega Quintet’s battle system, and be rewarded with the sweet sounds of the Blare’s defeat! And when you’re not saving the world, choreograph some amazing musical performances with the PVS Mode! Like any good pop song, Omega Quintet will draw you in with its charm and keep your attention with its hidden depths! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to practice my vocals! View the full article

  6. Since Warframe is a free-to-play third-person shooter, we try to fill every update with as many unique weapons and events as we can. When it comes to space ninja-ing, there are few things more satisfying than leaping into action and unleashing a hailstorm of bullets from a shiny new gun, or cutting through enemies with a newly polished blade. For Warframe, Update: Stolen Dreams adds a lot. New Quest: Stolen DreamsChase the thief Maroo’s stolen Arcane Codices across the Solar System! Both Corpus and Grineer enemies have taken great lengths to guard the information they’ve obtained. Breaking in and extracting the Arcane Codices will be no easy task. New Missions: Spy 2.0The Spy Mission type has received a major overhaul. In Spy 2.0, players need to break into three different data vaults guarded by security cameras, detection drones, patrolling guards and motion-sensing laser grids. Bonus affinity and extra rewards go to the stealthiest Tenno! New WeaponsThe Akjagara is our latest set of hard-hitting dual pistols, featuring a mix of organic and bladed elements from other weapons. Joining it is the Tenno polearm, the Tonbo — ideal for cutting through Infested flesh given its high base damage. Or you can make a sandwich from 6 feet away. Nothing wrong with that. New Tactical Alerts and Crossfire MissionsEver wanted to take advantage of Grineer and Corpus conflicts? Crossfire Missions put Tenno between Corpus and Grineer in the middle of Exterminate firefights. Additionally, we have new Tactical Alerts that are rolling out shortly after the Update launches. Both Alerts feature unique objectives and rewards, so keep a close eye on the Liset’s console for updates from the Lotus! New cosmetics, Syndicate Syadanas, Liset decorations, bug fixes and a slew of other changes are also featured in Update: Stolen Dreams. Be sure to check out a full list of changes in our Update notes on PS4 and good luck hunting down those Codices. View the full article
  7. Greetings, Helldivers. As a civilian, you made the most important decision of your life by enlisting in the Helldivers. As a Helldiver, you made Liberty… Democracy… and the protection of Super-Earth your personal responsibility. You have made a difference. The positive response and recruitment rate since Helldivers first launched into the galaxy on March 3rd have been overwhelming. The latest statistics coming in from the Galactic Fleet bring us some heartening news: 4.2 billion shots fired by the Helldivers (avg. accuracy 38%) 500 million enemies of Super-Earth neutralized (killed) 772 thousand planets liberated 33 thousand cape spinning Trophies earned We remember and salute the 9 million brave Helldivers who have already sacrificed their lives in our fight for freedom! (2.3 million of those to Friendly Fire). New Reinforcements — To meet the alien threat today, we are deploying 3 DLC packs to any Helldiver in need of new outfits and gear. Each pack is available individually for $2.99, or you can buy all 3 Packs in the Helldivers add-on bundle for $5.99 . Commando PackHelldiver Commandos are the best of the best, specialists at being a one man army capable of leaving a wake of death and destruction. Though they are seen as one man armies, the Commandos value teamwork greatly due to their equipment. The Commando Pack contains: The Commando Uniform (Helmet, Armor, and Cape). SMG-34 ‘Ninja': A silenced, compact, submachine gun with short reach and good accuracy. The silenced aspect has been debated much and there is no proof that it actually reduces the risk of detection. MLS-4X ‘Commando': A multiple missile launcher system similar to the one used on the EXO-44. From its four barrels it fires seeking missiles at a high rate of fire; primarily an anti-personnel weapon, it can be upgraded to have limited anti-tank capabilities. Defender PackHelldiver Defenders are the unmovable objects of humanity, capable of holding their ground in any situation. They have a bulkier look and a helmet reminiscent of the knights of Old Earth and used to double as riot police before humanity unified properly. The Defender Pack contains: The Defender Uniform (Helmet, Armor, and Cape). CR-9 ‘Suppressor': A semi-automatic rifle firing small fragmentation grenades. It is a volatile weapon but capable of devastating large masses of enemies, hence the nickname ‘Suppressor’. AD-334 ‘Guard Dog': A backpack drone system, featuring an automated defensive combat drone armed with a small submachine gun. The drone circles ahead, firing at targets of opportunity and will land in the backpack to reload. Support PackSupport Helldivers are much loved by their squad mates and bring both firepower and medical aid to any squad they join. Wearing the classic grey cape with a black cross they project an aura of capable concern for fellow humans. The Support Uniform, a cosmetic helmet, armor, and cape. LAS-16 ‘Sickle': A carbine based on laser technology, modified to behave more as a regular assault rifle. It overheats quickly but well placed shots do excellent damage and the virtually unlimited ammunition is invaluable in tight situations. AD-289 ‘Angel': A backpack drone system, with an automated healing and repair drone that will try to help all friendly targets in its vicinity. It will land in the backpack to refill the restorative substance. Don’t forget the still ongoing Limited Edition bundle, until 4/28. Citizens that enlist before this date will receive special Helldivers Ranger training at no added cost. Ranger Limited Edition BundleHelldivers specially trained in scouting and assassination of high value targets, these Rangers are the first to drop into the unknown. Ranger training was standard procedure for all Helldivers in the early days of Super-Earth, but has now become rarer. The Ranger Uniform, a cosmetic helmet, armor, and cape. LHO-63 ‘Camper': A designated marksman rifle with high power and accuracy traded for fire rate, few enemies take more than a few shots to kill. ‘Humblebee’ UAV: An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, capable of revealing enemies and hidden objectives at greater distances. 9. Crafting the world and visuals of The Order: 1886 has been a long and hard fought labor of love from the art and creative team at Ready At Dawn Studios, and it is our great pleasure to now be able to share some of the massive trove of visual development and production art that we have brought to life along the way. Curated by our lead concept artist Joe Studzinski, alongside our talented design partners at BlueCanvas, we are proud to present the Blackwater Archives | The Art of The Order: 1886, a beautifully leather bound art book, spanning over 260 pages of some of the most spectacular work from the project, and now available for purchase on Amazon. Convincing players to accept the plausibility of half-breed creatures and Nikola Tesla designed arc guns, co-existing alongside a vibrant realization of a Victorian London right out of a period film, was both an exciting and daunting challenge for us, but it was one we embraced wholeheartedly. From fusing the lore of our world into painstaking recreations of historical architecture and locations, to the meticulous tailoring of unique costumes for each Knight down to the very fabric and stitching of the era, we set out to completely blur the lines between the historical reality that was and our vision of what it could have been, with a degree of research and attention to detail that bordered on the obsessive. In the pages of this book, we have hand selected a wide range of pieces to reflect all aspects of the game, covering characters, creatures, weapons, props, and environments, from the earliest conceptual sketches through final production art. With such an enormous library of beautiful work to choose from, we tried to select pieces that were not only a stunning representation of the artistry behind The Order: 1886, but that also give people a deeper insight to the creative and artistic thought process that went into building characters, technology, and a world with its own cohesive sense of identity of time, place, and history — believable, but slightly off from our own. We are thrilled to be able to give our fans such a deep look into the rich visuals behind The Order: 1886, and this book is a wonderful testament to the collective vision of a group of incredibly talented artists that I have the privilege of working with on a daily basis. We hope you find the same sense of inspiration and wonder within these pages that we did in its creation. Blackwater Archives | The Art of The Order: 1886 View the full article
  10. Good news and bad news, all. Buckle up. Bad news first: Jamestown+, the long-awaited PS4 release of our critically-acclaimed 4-player co-op shoot-em-up, is NOT coming out last summer like we promised. I know. You’re shocked. Here’s the good news: Jamestown+ is coming out TOMORROW! AND WE’RE SUPER PROUD OF IT! Here, check out this emotional short film on the topic of its release: The original PC version of Jamestown took two years to put together. We spent an additional year on Jamestown+ for the PS4. A whole year! See that little “+†in the upper-right corner of the logo? A YEAR OF OUR LIVES IS INSIDE OF THAT “+â€! Here are some other things you’ll find tucked away inside that “+â€: - A Platinum trophy*. That’s right, we’re coming out strong with the big guns right up front. *Seriously though: Platinum trophy. Also, earning this particular Platinum trophy comes with a bonus: a little thing called self-respect. - The Armada Matrix: three (3) new characters, each with your choice of two (2) unique Special weapons and six (6)(!) new Shot types. You can combine these weapons/shots any way you want, as you would at a delicious salad bar… A SALAD BAR OF VENGEANCE: *We get this question a lot, so just to be completely above-board on this issue: yes, that is a giant spaceship-sword made of Martian death crystal. - Two completely new levels, set on the mysterious moons of Mars: The Black Garrison of Phobos, and the Shifting Sands of Deimos! These are full-fledged, canonical Jamestown levels with brand-new art, tons of new enemy types, story sequences, full orchestral soundtracks, and huge new bosses like the Pirate Queen here: - The original soundtrack and sound effects have all been carefully remastered for 5.1 surround sound. Honestly, I wasn’t sure this was going to make that much of a difference to the overall game experience. Tim (my brother, also our lead programmer/chieftain) was all like “Dude shut up it’s going to be amazing†and then I was all like “my man, you said that about those Hobbit movies†and then we almost had a Workplace Incident. But you guys? I WAS WRONG, REMASTERED 5.1 SURROUND SOUND MAKES A HUUUUGE DIFFERENCE. - The Gunpowder, Treason, & Plot DLC has ALSO made the journey to your PS4, and will ALSO be available tomorrow! Four more new ships, for just two dollars?! They told us not to do it, but we couldn’t hear them over the sound of our own excited screaming! Thanks for your patience while we brought this game in for a landing. We hope you and your friends check out Jamestown+ on PS4, available tomorrow on the Playstation Store, and have a great time exploring 17th-century British colonial Mars together! Because THAT… …would be the greatest news of all. View the full article

  12. Though Bloodborne shares some broad similarities with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, it translates From Software’s trademark high risk, high reward play style to PS4 in new and interesting ways. Starting with its zippier movement speed, Bloodborne seems bound and determined to strip away anything that might encumber the moment-to-moment flow. Shields are no longer central to gameplay, replaced with dodging and a new “regain†system that allows you to regenerate lost health by striking the creature that inflicted the damage (don’t expect to mash buttons hoping for an easy health boost, though). These strategic tweaks further heighten From Software’s blissful blend of risk and reward and encourage you to stay on the offense. Character creation will be familiar to veteran Souls players. In selecting a character “origin,†you’ll choose from colorful descriptors such as Troubled Childhood (high resilience), Violent Past (high strength), and Waste of Skin (nearly helpless). I opted for the Military Veteran, which gave a balanced boost to my strength and skill ratings. Moments into the game, it’s clear that From Software is putting PS4’s processing power to good use. Bloodborne’s grim hellscapes are a clear generational leap from the castles and courtyards of the Souls games. Bottles and boxes tumble realistically when struck. Fog flows like spilled blood. Light sources glow menacingly. The environments look and feel alive in ways the eight year-old PS3 hardware just can’t accommodate. After ogling the environments, my Military Veteran set to work. Some friendly demons presented me with a choice of three starting weapons: I skipped the Hunter’s Axe and Saw Cleaver in favor of the Threaded Cane, a nasty piece of work that bashed skulls up close and expanded into a bladed whip for longer distance work. Bloodborne’s weapons are multifaceted marvels, each effectively serving as two weapons in one. Combined with firearms like the Hunter’s Pistol and Blunderbuss, I strung together wicked multipart combos that shredded enemy mobs quickly and efficiently. Bloodborne also taps into some of DualShock 4’s unique control features, starting with the touchpad. Click the right side and you’ll see your personal effects (molotovs, notebook, etc); click the left side and you’ll see your available gestures, which you’ll activate using DualShock 4’s internal motion sensor. Bloodborne + PS Vita Remote Play ImpressionsJustin Massongill, PlayStation.Blog Being a PS4 title, we naturally had questions about how Bloodborne’s faster combat would translate to PS Vita‘s smaller form factor. I can happily report that FromSoftware has implemented various niceties that ensure a smooth transition from DualShock 4 to PS Vita, including a few clever re-mapping solutions: DualShock 4 ControlIn-game functionRemote Play ControlL2 & R2Gun & Strong attackBottom corners of front touchscreenDS4 Touchpad (split to left & right halves)Gestures & Personal EffectsFront Touchpad (split to left & right halves)R3Lock-on to enemyRight half of Rear TouchpadAfter about five minutes of re-training my muscle memory, I was already dodging and counterattacking Bloodborne’s nightmarish beasts with the same finesse and ferocity as I was managing while playing natively on PS4. Then there are the new Chalice Dungeons, procedurally generated levels set in the vast ruins beneath Yharnam. I test drove one dungeon called “Chamber of the Seal,†and its gloomy atmosphere and haunting ambient audio gave a tantalizing preview of what’s in store. After hacking through a mob of scuttling rats and hulking horrors, a towering undead giant flattened me in two mighty blows. This experience perfectly encapsulated the major differences — as well as some key similarities — between Bloodborne and the Souls games. The melee combat felt more immediate, and I made rapid progress thanks to my faster movement speed. But in classic Souls style, all it took was one moment of hesitation to seal my fate. I’m dying to dive back into Bloodborne when it lands on PS4 March 24th. View the full article
  13. Hi everybody! This is Marcus from SideQuest Studios with some good news for PS Vita fans and shmup lovers! I’m excited to announce that we are launching an updated version of Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype along with the “The Last Chapter†expansion for Vita and PlayStation TV tomorrow. For those of you unfamiliar with the Söldner-X 2 series hopefully this trailer will get you up to speed. While some of you are eager to face the challenge, others might be worried that Söldner-X 2 is one of those insanely difficult bullet hell shooters. We love shmups and wanted to make the genre a little more accessible to new players. Söldner-X 2 includes a unique feature we call the Play Rank System, which automatically adjusts the game’s difficulty level while you are playing. This even occurs mid-level so inexperienced players are likely to encounter less enemies, fewer bullets and take less damage. On the other hand, when your skills improve the game will become more challenging to match your ability and reward you with much higher scores. Speaking of high scores, every run can be uploaded to our servers meaning that replay files from other players are available to be downloaded and played back on your PS Vita. That way instead of wondering “How did they get such a high score!?†you can now watch their run and find out. To make things more exciting for existing fans, (And a bit fairer on new players!), the PS Vita version will have a completely fresh high score table and added tracking for additional stats. Ever wanted to know how many total enemies have been killed or see a detailed breakdown of your friends’ activity? Head over to www.soldner-x.com/sx2/ and check it out. There is still an active battle for high scores on the PS3 version so we’re really excited to see who will rise to the top of the leaderboards! We put a lot of effort into making Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype look as great on PS Vita as it did on PS3, and we worked really hard to ensure the game runs at a constant 60 frames per second without compromise. Even with hundreds of bullets and enemies on screen, you will be able to enjoy the game without any slowdown. We also want to say a big thank you to the guys over at PlayStation for their support during our tricky engine optimizations. The game will be available tomorrow for $9.99 with the DLC priced at $4.99. You can also pick both up in one bundle for $12.99. Söldner-X 2 is cross buy, meaning that if you already own the game on PS3, you can download it for free for PS Vita and PlayStation TV. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and for checking out our game. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below. View the full article

  16. My name is Mike Lindsey and I’m the Community Manager here at FarSight Studios. Badger and I handle many of the community tasks at the studio, as well as host a monthly Twitch stream where we show off the new pinball table before it’s released. We live in the mountains of Southern California and frequently have to shovel the snow from our driveways before leaving for work. We didn’t choose the thug life, the thug life chose us. It’s been a little while since we posted, and we have lots of new DLC coming out with this one! We are proud to announce that we will be releasing the awesome Addams Family, Starship Troopers, Earthshaker, and Party Zone tables for PS4 on March 17th. This launch brings the amount of tables available in your digital pinball collection to 56! These machines used to be found in arcades across America before video arcade games replaced them (bummer). That’s why we are here, to introduce a new generation to the amazing themes, designs, and deep rules that come with pinball tables. The Addams Family was released by Williams in 1992 and is unquestionably one of the greatest pinball tables in the history of pinball, with over 20,000 units sold (More than any table ever!). It was designed by the legendary Pat Lawlor and Larry DeMar (who also designed Twilight Zone, Banzai Run, and Funhouse). This table was integrated more deeply to the movie than any other licensed pinball table of its time. The Addams Family featured the first ever optical target bank (in the bookcase), and the “Thing Flip†which was the first time a pinball tables flippers could be controlled by the tables CPU. When the “Thing Flip†is active the table can actually make shots for you. Another great feature is “The Power†which causes magnets to dramatically affect the direction of the ball on the playfield. It’s one of our favorite tables ever! Thanks to our amazing Kickstarter backers, we were able to raise the funds needed to secure the licenses to digitize this amazing piece of Americana. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the overwhelming support of our fans! THANK YOU GUYS! The Addams Family isn’t the only headliner launching with this batch of tables, though! Starship TroopersBadger and I would agree that Starship Troopers is one of our favorite licenses. The movie came out when we were around 10 (give or take) and it definitely had us running around the yard calling ourselves “Rico.†And don’t even get us started on Denise Richards. Starship Troopers (1997): features the license for the popular film of the same name released in 1997. Designed by Joe Balcer and Joe Kaminkow, this table conveys the style and feel of the movie with its vibrantly colored playfield, music from the movie, and custom speech. The gameplay features hardcore sci-fi action with three Flippers, high scoring Nuke ‘em rounds, four unique Multi-Ball modes, a moving Warrior Bug live fire battle simulator, and a Brain Bug that pops out of the playfield! Starship Troopers has appropriately been described as easy to play but hard to master. EarthshakerI’m sure many of you have heard, we have some pretty crazy earthquakes out here in California. This table was inspired by the semi-frequent earthshakers we get due to the San Andreas Fault. It’s just a little taste of some California excitement! Earthshaker (1989): Designed by Pat Lawlor, this entertaining table features a shaker motor built into the cabinet that physically shakes the table when an earthquake is triggered. Early versions of the table featured a building that sunk down into the table during the earthquake but was removed for cost reasons. 200 of these special tables were released. A bright colorful playfield, interesting rule set, and great music and sound make Earthshaker a true pinball classic. 5,265 units of this table were produced. Party ZoneSometimes you gotta party, but don’t want to leave the house. Now you can! Just fire up Party Zone and never leave home again! Party Zone (1991): Designed by Dennis Nordman, this table’s theme is all about having a good time. Players are challenged with getting the Party Animals, Party Monsters and Party Dudes to the Cosmic Cottage for a Multi-Ball Party! From there, they’ll score Jackpots and shoot for the ultimate Big Bang! Request Time allows players to make way cool musical selections using the Flippers, including Pinball Wizard from The Who! The colorful Playfield includes awesome features such as the Dancing Dummy who bops ’til he drops, the host and DJ, Captain B. Zarr, whose head animates and follows the ball around the Playfield and the Prince of Puns, the Supersonic Robotic Comic. When it’s time to party, there is no better place than Bally’s Party Zone. 4,000 units of this table were produced. Come hang out with Badger and I on Twitch Wednesday, March 18th at 3:00 PM Pacific! We will be showing off the new tables and the super cool Addams Family Ball Pack which you definitely don’t want to miss. Everyone that shows up has the chance to win some free stuff so, set a reminder and don’t forget to follow us. We will see you at the Twitch stream! View the full article
  17. Just minutes into my demo with Magicka 2 on PS4, Paradox Studio Manager Mattias Wiking told me that the game does not protect its players. In any way. I discovered this by tumbling off a cliff while running from monsters, and my success with Magicka 2 did not improve drastically during the remainder of the demonstration. So how can all these sudden deaths and comical explosions of the arcane be so much fun? Magicka 2, like its predecessor, places players in control of a robed wizard and a selection of eight devastating elements. With the touch of a face button, players can charge their wizard with crackling orbs of lightning or burning plumes of fire. These elements can then be channeled through the wizard’s staff and directed at enemies, imbued into the wizard’s sword, used as an area attack, or just cast upon the wizard itself. With this straight-forward elemental system, all the fun in Magicka 2 comes roaring to the foreground. Wiking explained that after a short introduction, all the elements are fully unlocked to players and open to experimentation. Charge a wizard with fire and water, for example, and a searing-hot blast of steam will issue forth from its staff. Or mix ice and water together for some snowball fun. Even three different elements can be fused together to form some interesting combinations, from life-restoring health-pellets to powerful death mines (yes, death mines). There is no limitation to the system outside of the simple rule that opposite elements (fire and ice, for example) will cancel each other out. Otherwise, if players want to cast a death spell on themselves, they can — and they will suffer for it. Friendly fire is always turned on and, like the recently released Helldivers, will cause hilarious misadventure. Wiking noted that the development team took special care to ensure that the DualShock 4 controls were refined and easy to use. Pressing one of the face buttons loads up one of four different elemental orbs. Holding L1 will change each face button into the opposite element, so players have easy access to all eight. This makes lightning-fast combinations a reality, and keeps spell-casting a constant, entertaining challenge. Magicka 2 fully supports drop-in, drop-out cooperative play, with any combination of online or offline players. The game has a full campaign to play through, solo or multiplayer, but also boasts a collection of wave-based challenges. Survive against increasingly difficult sets of enemies to earn a better score, or to just test one’s own spellcasting prowess. The biggest addition to Magicka 2 comes in the form of artifacts, which are adjustable game parameters that players can use to either help or hinder their progress. There are 32 artifacts to unlock and experiment with across several categories. These artifacts could buff a player’s health and spell power, or empower monsters with similar stat boosts. With up to six artifacts in play, players have much more control over the degree of the challenge they want in battle. Despite my many deaths and accidental friendly kills, Magicka 2 was an absolute blast — even if I only sampled a small taste of the spell casting. If chaotic, elemental co-op sounds like your cup of tea, Magicka 2 hits PS4 on May 26th. View the full article
  18. Now that The Order: 1886 has been released to the world, we wanted to shed some additional insight into the work that went into capturing the game’s unique atmosphere. Once the initial story treatment was done, the wheels were set in motion. Our setting was to be London in the Victorian Era and no other setting would have better suited our first foray into creating a new game world. We felt that the aesthetic we were seeking had not yet been realized in games. All we needed to do was materialize the things that were on our head into a 3D environment. That was definitely easier said than done, but we knew that over the years we had assembled the right team to tackle this goal. Our visual target was not only influenced by the era itself, it was guided by real world techniques from photography and cinematography, both old and new. We had to find a way to recreate the texture of the real world and the imperfections we have been so accustomed to in all we see, whether with our own eyes or through the lens of a camera. This was truly a massive undertaking. From the lenses we recreated in our engine to emulate actual physical glass, to stage lighting that replicated the “thickness†of the atmosphere around us, all of these aspects formed the foundation of the visuals we wanted to deliver. This is in many ways why we had waited until PS4 to start working on this game. We needed this platform to do justice to the goals we had set for ourselves. It was no easy challenge but in the end we created our vision of late 19th century Europe while infusing the anachronistic elements that defines our IP. It’s been a delicate balance of integrating all of the team’s work into making something truly unique, and painting the canvas of our world to show what we felt the next-generation of games could bring in terms of visuals. We have been both motivated and humbled by the feedback we have received since revealing the very first frames from our game back in June of 2013. Lastly, from all of us at Ready At Dawn, our heartfelt thanks to all our fans for your support, through thick and thin. It has meant a great deal to us. Until next time… “Honi soit qui mal y pense.†View the full article

  20. Sid ShumanI’ve decided that describing virtual reality to someone who’s never tried it is basically impossible. Like tasting or smelling or seeing, VR is a sensory experience that you have to try for yourself to truly understand. Words can’t do it justice. Nonetheless, Justin and I will do our best. Fresh off our positive test drive of last year’s original prototype, we were curious how much Project Morpheus’s upgraded specs have enhanced the overall VR experience, most notably that illusion of “presence†— the fragile feeling that you’re actually inhabiting the game’s world. Read on for Justin’s thoughts. But based on what I experienced, Project Morpheus has indeed come a long, long way since last March. For starters, the headset feels far lighter and much more comfortable. The screen can slide forward a few inches, which makes makes taking it on and off a much simpler affair. “The new display makes a world of difference.†Then there’s the display, which has seen a hefty upgrade from last year’s LCD to an OLED 1920 X RGB X 1080 specification that boasts richer colors and silky smoothness thanks to the new 120hz refresh rate. There’s no doubt about it: The new display makes a world of difference. There are myriad other enhancements. Nine LEDs now adorn the front and sides of Project Morpheus, which will allow PS Camera to track in 360 degrees. And latency, that eternal enemy of VR engineers, has been reduced to less than 18 milliseconds — a key technical achievement that promises to make the player’s movements more responsive and the experience more immersive. What none of these technical specs explain is how immersive Project Morpheus really is. It’s groundbreaking. I tried out two demos, “Magic Controller†and “Bedroom Robots,†both of which starred the cute little Asobi robots from PS4’s Playroom app. “Magic Controller†was a great introduction to the basics of VR. As I peered down at my DualShock 4, I saw a 3D cartoon simulacrum accurately overlaid over the form of my actual DualShock 4, keeping up a perfect illusion as I rotated the controller in my (real) hands. This was fascinating enough, but then the “magic†DualShock 4 transformed into a music player, and then a working flashlight, before my eyes. “It’s impossible to explain.†This demo might sound like kid’s stuff, but I was totally engrossed. I clicked the touchpad to deploy a small army of Asobi robots, who began dancing frantically while I waved my DualShock 4 flashlight’s beam over them. Thanks to the headset’s realistic depth perception, I felt like I was there, inhabiting that smoky dance floor with them. It was an impressive start. The second demo, “Bedroom Robots,†took a different approach. In this voyeuristic VR demo, I peered into a dollhouse populated with tiny robots. Leaning in closer to get a better look, I watched them ride exercise bikes, throw frisbees, and play ping-pong. Project Morpheus kept up perfectly with all of my real-life moments, letting me change my viewing angle as naturally as in real life. As I studied the tiny figures, a shiver traveled up my spine. The animations were charming enough, but if I had viewed this scene on a TV screen I wouldn’t have given it a second glance. Seen through Project Morpheus, the scene took on a weight and a gravity I haven’t experienced outside of, well, real life. Again, it’s impossible to explain. You really do have to try it. The technical stuff is way beyond me. But I’m hugely hopeful that Project Morpheus will empower completely new approaches to “game†design. Imagine a VR murder mystery that puts you at the center of a dinner party, or a stroll through an alien garden where you can stop to smell the (flesh-eating) roses. Played on a 2D TV screen, these experiences might look neat, but you’d be done in minutes. Experienced through Project Morpheus, they have the potential to be truly memorable and powerful. My body is ready. Justin MassongillMy Project Morpheus experience involved a cage, some jellyfish, an agitated shark, an increased heart rate and a genuine sense of terror. First things first: strapping the newest prototype onto my noggin was a trivial affair, requiring minimal adjustments to find a comfortable fit (which left space for my glasses without sacrificing precious immersion). “It left space for my glasses without sacrificing immersion.†A refresh of last year’s demo, “The Deep†showcases just how convincingly PS4’s prototype VR headset can persuade the human brain that you’re somewhere you’re not. Project Morpheus’ new enhancements coalesce to drastically elevate the demo’s immersiveness. As the demo began, I found myself standing in a cage maybe 20 feet under water. When I looked straight up I could see the cable suspending me, leading back up to a small boat on the surface. Schools of fish swam by, and bubbles floated through the water, sometimes just in front of my face — an unexpected “wow†moment each time it happened. I descended further down through different scenes, including a particularly gorgeous area lit only by passing jellyfish, leading to the meat of the demo: a tense standoff with a shark who had a hankerin’ for some tasty human flesh. After circling my cage a few times, the creature lunged at me. Thankfully my steadfast vessel fended off my would-be killer. The shark latched on to one of the cage’s light fixtures, jerking and thrashing it loose and tossing it to the ocean floor. The cage shook with each pull, which — get this — my brain interpreted as actual movement. Embarrassingly, I involuntarily tried to compensate for this by moving my real-life legs. I had to make a concerted effort to remind myself that I wasn’t actually hundreds of feet underwater, being attacked by a highly evolved aquatic predator. “One time, I caught myself actually taking a step back.†After a couple more circles around my beaten and battered cage, the shark came at me again. Then again. Each time, he would barely miss and nudge the cage to the side, or he would tear into another part of the cage and rip it off. Eventually, the entire front panel of the cage was gone, leaving nothing but fear between me and my impending end. I stood, alone and vulnerable, inside three fourths of a cage, watching as the animal circled, eyeing me — toying with me. He made a run for me a couple more times, and one time I caught myself actually taking a step back. Again, involuntary. At this point, my palms were sweaty. My heart was beating just a bit faster than normal. I felt genuinely uncomfortable even though I knew none of this was real. As far as my brain was concerned, it was real. I was there. I was, in some small part of my mind, mildly scared for my life. This is the most exciting proposition of Project Morpheus, and of virtual reality as a concept. If someone who’s closely followed and scrutinized this new technology can still be awed by it, imagine how inspiring and transformative it could be for others! One of our most impossible science fiction fantasies is here, it’s real, and it’s exactly as unbelievable as we had hoped it would be. View the full article

  22. While developing the PlayStation 4 system, our hardware and software teams relied on feedback from our community of developers. The result is the most innovative and forward-thinking gaming console in the market today. Since launch, PlayStation has continued that trend of listening to feedback by bringing some of the most highly requested features from the PlayStation Nation to PS4 with each of our system software updates. When we unveiled PS4 two years ago, we announced Suspend/Resume, a feature that would enable PS4 users to jump in and out of their games faster than ever. This has been a feature gamers have been excited about since then, and today I am honored to officially confirm that system software update 2.50, “Yukimura,†will soon deliver Suspend/Resume, as well as a number of other requested features to PS4. Suspend/Resume, which will be supported by nearly all PS4 titles, will create an atmosphere where your games are immediately available at any time — just pick up your DualShock 4 wireless controller, hit the PS button and get right back into the action of your games. When it’s time to log off, simply put your PS4 in Rest Mode and when you power up the next time, you’ll start your game where you left off. Spend less time getting into your games and more time playing them. 24. With a bow, cape, and his trusty (perhaps iconic) cap, Sir Graham enters a cave riddled with spare beds and a slumbering dragon. This odd story is only one of many being told in King’s Quest, the ambitious rekindling of the decades-old adventure series. Although the new King’s Quest is coming to PS4 and PS3 later this year, I was treated to an early look by none other than Matt Korba, the president and creative director of The Odd Gentlemen. Korba’s reverence of the original series resonates behind his every word, and that reverence translates into a charming, colorful adventure about an old king and a curious granddaughter. Graham, the aging protagonist and storyteller, narrates the plot as he explains his past adventures to his granddaughter Gwendolyn. This allows the team at The Odd Gentlemen to skim across different timelines, exploring a narrative in the past and “present†simultaneously. And like its predecessors, King’s Quest remains a story-driven experience, in which players interact with the world around them, solve puzzles, and live out Graham’s adventures in comical (and touching) fashion. While Korba never explained why there were a legion of discarded beds in the dragon’s cave, he hinted that everything would be revealed over time, even in small details like a discarded arrow nestled into the cave wall. In the dragon’s lair, Graham is trying to reclaim a magic mirror from the dragon’s clutches. If he fails to hide in a bed on time, he plays a role in a light-hearted “death scene.†But of course, since King Graham is actually alive and well doing narration, he quips that he was just making sure Gwendolyn is still awake. Later in the demo, Korba skipped ahead to a later section of the story which takes place before Sir Graham was even a knight. With a little less resolve and a lot less skill, Graham is attempting to cross a river in order to attend a knight’s tournament. This introduces yet more puzzles, tasking players with finding creative ways to ford the fast-flowing water and reach the arena. Korba explained that their design is heavily inspired by Ken and Roberta Williams’ original philosophies, which form a pyramid of sorts between art, story, and gameplay. They strive for a balance between these three elements. This is clear in The Odd Gentlemen’s vision, as even simple gameplay animations showcase Graham’s personality; his pitiful attempts to fire an arrow, or a stumble while lifting a heavy gear into place. While players can lead Graham to a variety of fictional deaths, there are no actual “dead ends†or fail states outside of “try it again.†Korba wants King’s Quest to click with families; not just children, not just adults, but the whole bunch. And with such a charming story and enticing artistic direction, the studio looks well poised to live up to the enormous expectations set by the project’s legacy. View the full article
  25. Hey everyone, John from ATLUS here. You know how in some RPGs, you spend all this time and experience perfecting your combat strategies, honing the best possible team imaginable to face off with the big bad boss at The End? Well, let me paint a nightmare scenario for you: your pool of warriors that are leveling up and gaining experience have a few traitors in their midst. And as you inch closer and closer towards the final boss, you’re forced to kill one of your teammates — hoping against all hope that you figured out enough clues along the way to be able to correctly identify which one of them is actually a traitor. And after you repeatedly undergo this pattern of trial of accusations and executions (bear in mind this is on top of a full day of combat) you’re squaring off against the final boss, only to have several party members turn on you because SURPRISE, you picked the wrong traitor. The End. Or rather, the beginning, because that’s the scenario that PS3 and PS Vita users will be facing when ATLUS launches the tactical RPG Lost Dimension this summer. In this wild mashup of an RPG, the player is the main protagonist of SEALED — a group of psychically gifted warriors — and acts as their commander on the battlefield. After combat, the warriors wait back in their base camp where the protagonist can chat with several members to improve their relationships, and at certain points use his unique ability to read minds to try and sniff out the traitors. Of course since you’ll be bonding with the rest of your combat unit, you get to use their experience in combat to both level up their individual abilities as well as get insight as to whether they may be the traitor. And man, let me tell you how much it sucks when you have to “erase†an ally you’ve really been pouring experience into. And for those worried about replayability, the traitors are randomly chosen each playthrough, so good luck with New Game+ mode! You can expect to see Lost Dimension on PS3 and PS Vita this summer in North America. View the full article
