  1. Hello, everybody! Allow me to take you on a magical ride into storyland. I once waved my hands and foretold a nebulous launch date for Paperbound of “March 2015.†Entire weeks have passed, and some quantity of humans has been anxiously awaiting the happy ending for this tale. By Jules Verne’s nightgown, the stars have aligned and the hallowed pages have revealed… oh, screw it. Paperbound will launch on March 31 in the Americas. It’s going to be $9.99. Think of all the butt-sitting hours of fun you can have with that. By comparison, here are some other things you could buy with $10. 1.23 quality burritos. Estimated duration: 15 minutes. A ninja turtle toy. Estimated duration: depends on dog. One of those photo frames with the photo of the happy family. Estimated duration: a lifelong reminder of your family’s inadequacies. A bottle of water at Disneyland. Estimated duration: 30 nicely-hydrated minutes. If you’re not familiar with Paperbound (shame on you), it’s a local multiplayer (that means a bunch of people on a couch), 2D brawler in which you enter the pages of old books to have twitchy battles and manipulate the direction of your own gravity. We have 11 original characters taken from these books, as well as a cabal of playable characters popping in from other games. You use weapons like pencils, scissors, and ink bombs to take out your enemies in the most whimsically-satisfying way. Paperbound will feature all the wall walking and adorable decapitation you’ve come to love in other games, plus some newly-added and tricksy AI bots that are good for the following purposes: Embarrassing yourself (when they beat you) Filling the holes in your heart Evening out teams in 2v2 games Knitting* Flying solo Each bot has his/her own personality. For example, Mumsy (the one-eyed mummy) can be coy and keep his distance, tossing scissors when you come near. All the tossing and scissoring you can handle. Juan (making a guest appearance from Guacamelee!) is aggressive and pretty much doesn’t need anything but his fists. Jasmine doesn’t take crap from anybody and will hunt you down should you momentarily get the best of her. The bots are something I decided to add recently because I know that not everyone has their friends over all the time. As fun as sleepovers are, sometimes your wife doesn’t appreciate them. So these bots are for all you lone wolves out there. They’re also good when you’ve only got one or two pals over and you want to play a sweaty, sweaty match of the 2v2 Capture the Quill game mode (or any of the other 2v2 modes). I think they’re quite formidable (Mike, the character artist, lost 10 out of the first 12 matches he played against them), but some people are naturals and might think they need more of a challenge. Well, I’m glad to say that once you think you’ve mastered them in some of the easier arenas, the more chaotic ones like The Book of Void or Grinder (a sadistic arena from Dante’s Inferno) will cut you back down to size. There are 18 arenas from the pages of all 5 books (A Journey to the Center of the Earth, Skull Kingdom, A Book of Five Rings, The Book of the Dead, and Dante’s Inferno), so you’ll have plenty of challenges to face. One thing that was a major goal for Paperbound was for the arenas to feel very different from each other, allowing for a lot of variety. And I think we’ve hit that mark, from the screen-wrap teleporting of The Book of Void to the springy platforms of Spirit Stones and the narrow channels of Labyrinth. Some arenas are tight, condensed experiences, such as The Book of Water, while Whirlygigs and others are expansive and allow you to really master navigation. The Paperbound team is really excited to be hitting your PS4 at the end of the month. It’s a great platform for Paperbound because you can get your best friends alternatively staring at the same screen and then giving each other menacing glares. This a type of experience that’s making a bit of a comeback, and I’m happy that Paperbound can be at the forefront of it. *Not really. View the full article

You have all been such a big part of our successes, and we have carefully listened to your requests to make your PlayStation experiences even better. We’re happy to be delivering many of them with “Yukimura.†Please keep the feedback flowing, so we can continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. *Suspend/Resume is not fully supported by some software titles. **A sufficiently robust wi-fi connection is required. 5. Last time we checked in, we were absolutely thrilled to bring you Slender: The Arrival on PS3. This time around we’re bringing the scares to PS4, and they’re better than ever. One of the things we loved most about Slender: The Arrival was the haunting soundtrack. From exploring dark, ominous areas to running frantically for your life, we wanted to ensure players were always on edge. Combined with some beautiful, calming audio in the more tranquil areas of the game, we were able to create a unique emotional experience. So now, not only is the game looking and running better on PS4, but we’ve also decided to take the audio one step further and take advantage of the system’s brand spanking new video recording functionality to bring you an awesome new giveaway. Here’s a look at what you’re in for: “Whispers around the town of Oakside Park speak of a legend. Many longtime residents will know of it, fearing the tale as children and growing old enough to eventually pass it along to children of their own. It speaks of a voice in the woods, a soft and alluring melody known to draw inquisitive wanderers deep into the forest where they are never to be seen again. Many believe the voice to belong to an old woman named Frieda who has long since passed, tragically taking her grandchildren with her. Frieda’s gravestone can still be found on an old homestead just outside of town. Is this simply an urban legend concocted by worried parents to keep their children from getting lost in the woods, or is there something more to it..?†Throughout the game on any given play session there is a small chance that a melody sung by a calming voice will play whenever the player ventures through outdoor environments. If players can capture a recording of the voice, upload it, and send it our way to prove it is more than a mere urban legend, they will have the chance to win some great giveaways, courtesy of Blue Isle Studios. For more details and rules about the giveaway, head over to our website. Slender: The Arrival lands on Playstation 4 today. We hope you enjoy the game, and don’t forget to keep your eyes and ears open! View the full article
  6. We’re proud to announce today’s launch of Metal Slug 3, the pinnacle of 2D run & gun action on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita during Spring Fever! Metal Slug 3 | PlayStation.com Originally launched in 2000 by SNK on the NEOGEO game console — which celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, Metal Slug 3 is the most highly-praised installment in the series by Metal Slug fans around the world for its refined game balance and massive volume. Together with Code Mystics and SCEA Third Party Productions, not only did we want to bring a high-quality version of the original NEOGEO game with added Trophy support and online multiplayer, this download version of Metal Slug 3 also includes convenient cross save functionality, and a cross play feature allowing players to enjoy co-op gameplay on any of these three PlayStation platforms. 7. The wait is finally over, Borderlands fans. Today, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection arrives on PlayStation 4, ushering in the current-gen debuts of Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and all of their add-on content! It’s incredibly cool to see both games in a single package, especially with all of that add-on content, which is an absolutely insane amount. Also, if you’re an easily-impressed dork like me, you’ll spend at least a few minutes flicking back and forth between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on the game select screen, because the animated menu is mesmerizing. Beyond the games and all of the add-on content, we’ve also got some cool new features like four-player local split-screen and the ability to transfer your saves from prior-gen systems. Using cross save, you can transfer your characters and Badass Rank from PS3 to PS4 or vice versa, and for Borderlands 2, PS Vita saves can also be transferred back and forth. Today also marks the launch of the final Season Pass add-on content for Borderlands: The Pre Sequel — Claptastic Voyage and Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2! Claptastic Voyage is a brand new add-on campaign set inside Claptrap’s mind. It involves Handsome Jack digitizing the Vault Hunters and sending them inside to find the mysterious “H-Source†code, while trying to get out of Claptrap’s consciousness without going completely insane. As a bonus, this add-on pack includes the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, which raises the level cap to 70. Claptastic Voyage and the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2 are available on PS4 in The Handsome Collection today, and is also available for PS3 Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel players (either included with a Season Pass purchase, or as a separate purchase for $9.99). Also available today are cool bonuses for Tales from the Borderlands players. If you’ve been playing the excellent Tales from the Borderlands from our friends over at Telltale Games and have purchased the Season Pass, starting today you’ll be able to unlock bonus heads and skins in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It’s great to see so much cool Borderlands content arrive all at once, and it’s even greater to see it finally arriving on PS4. We’ll have a lot more great stuff coming for PS4 players as Battleborn ramps up in the months ahead, so stay tuned! View the full article

  9. The wait is over: Bloodborne is now available in North America. Please find below a special message from game director Hidetaka Miyazaki: To all Bloodborne fans, As From Software’s first game for PlayStation 4, development of Bloodborne was not without its ups and downs. But thanks to the tireless efforts of the development team, and the support of all of the staff at Sony Computer Entertainment, we somehow made it to the finish line. Bloodborne takes place in an old city called Yharnam, where a sickness called the “scourge of the beast†turns humans into malformed beasts. And it is here that Hunters will engage in deadly blood-drenched combat. I hope you all get to enjoy this dark, terror-filled, horrific experience. –Bloodborne Director, Hidetaka Miyazaki Bloodborne is out now, on shelves and via PlayStation Store, exclusively for PlayStation 4. Don’t forget, starting today, you can download the custom Bloodborne audio mode, tuned specifically for the game, to your PlayStation headset through the PlayStation 4 Headset Companion App. As a special treat just for launch, please enjoy these two music tracks: one from the game, and one from the TV commercial. First up is “Cleric Beast,†from the Bloodborne Original Soundtrack. Composed by Tsukasa Saitoh, this piece is also featured on the Bloodborne Mini Soundtrack, a three-track album available as a gift to those who purchase Bloodborne digitally from PlayStation Store this week, through March 31st.* The second music track is the full length song HUNT YOU DOWN by The Hit House Featuring Ruby Friedman, featured in the Bloodborne TV commercial and 90s CG trailer.** See you in Yharnam, hunters * For promotional use only. © & (P) 2015 Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. **(© 2015 Hit House Global Publishing | BMI). 10. Psst.. Bloodborne is out tonight! And if you know anything about From Software, you know they don’t make cakewalks. To give you a head start, PlayStation’s internal teams joined forces to provide a list of crucial tips. Enjoy, and leave your advice in the comments below! Character DevelopmentChoose carefully. Spend time selecting your “Origin†during character customization. Selecting the one that fits your play style will save you time and Blood Echoes in the long run. –Julie Abdalla, SCEA Test Analyst Stats 101. Vitality grants more health and is always helpful. Endurance and Strength are good bets if you want to maximize your melee, while Bloodtinge boosts the effectiveness of your firearms. Whichever play style you prefer, pick a few key stats and pump them. Don’t spread yourself thin! Blood money. Blood Echoes are your sole form of currency, both for purchasing items and leveling up. If you die (and you will), you’ll lose them… but if you can get back to your body without dying again, you can reclaim them. Look for a puddle on the ground or an enemy with glowing eyes. Dress to kill. As soon as possible, save up Blood Echoes to buy the Yharnam attire from the shop in Hunter’s Dream. This new garb will greatly increase your defense and help keep you breathing early in the game. Invest for success. Use Blood Stone Shards to “reinforce†(aka upgrade) a weapon’s damage. You can do this in the workshop located in Hunter’s Dream. Once you’ve chosen a good melee weapon, reinforce it as much as possible as early as you can. The extra damage will make your life so much easier. You are the weapon. It’s best to stick with one weapon and learn its intricacies — how far it reaches, how long it takes to swing, which buttons yield the best attacks. For example, the Kirkhammer starts as a humble sword, but tap L1 and it transforms into a mighty hammer that can eradicate mobs of beasts with one swing. – Justin Massongill, PlayStation.Blog Smart shopping. Quicksilver Bullets are hugely overpriced in Hunter’s Dream, so make runs through Central Yharnam and scoop them off the snipers instead. Save your Blood Echoes for Molotovs and other, more exotic purchases. Insightful mind. Your Insight level is shown in the upper right-hand corner of the screen under your Blood Echoes. It indicates the depth of inhuman knowledge you have attained, and you can spend a point to call in other players for help. Pay close attention to your Insight level — things around you may change as it increases… – Kumi Yuasa, SCEA Bloodborne Producer Combat StrategiesThe best defense. Bloodborne rewards a smart offense. After you take damage, for a few seconds you can regain lost health by landing blows on enemies. In tough combat scenarios, it may pay to launch into a berserker rage and earn back every possible drop of life. Lock and load. You can click R3 to lock onto a foe, and you’ll circle strafe around it. You’ll need to lock on to throw items or fire projectiles. Locking on isn’t always the best choice, though. When fighting multiple foes or certain bosses, you may want to preserve your freedom of movement. Generally, it’s best to lock on when you’re facing one tough enemy, such as a Wolf Beast or Brick Troll. Gun stunner. Bloodborne’s firearms inflict little direct damage. Instead, use them to stun enemies and set up devastating Visceral Strikes. Lock on to an enemy (click R3) and press L2 to fire. A well-timed shot, landed just as the enemy is attacking, will briefly stun it. Then, at close range, quickly tap R1 to inflict a deadly Visceral Strike. This will kill most beasts in just one hit, and even works against many bosses. Practice this and you’ll be unstoppable. Free ammo. Heading into a crucial battle and need Quicksilver Bullets? No worries. Tap Up on the directional pad and, at the cost of a little life, you’ll snag five free rounds. If you’re quick, you can even regain that lost life by slashing at a nearby foe. – Justin Massongill, PlayStation.Blog Drink up. Blood Vials are quite common in Yharnam, so don’t skimp on healing. Tap Triangle whenever you’re not at maximum health — yes, even during a fight. Meet the Molotov. Early on, Molotovs will be your best friend. They’re affordable, inflict significant damage, and will allow you to defeat enemies that are much tougher than you. Combine them with the Oil Urns to inflict grave damage. Hit and run. The lunging attack (Up on the left analog stick and R2, simultaneously) is a powerful move you’ll want to use again and again. Use it to land the first strike on a dangerous enemy or to deliver a final blow from afar. Wear and tear. Inflicting less melee damage than normal? Your weapon is probably in disrepair. Keep your weapons in tip-top shape by visiting the workshop in Hunter’s Dream. Flame on. The torch illuminates dark spaces, and can inflict decent damage up close. But when equipped, it will also keep certain, dangerous enemy types at bay. It’s a useful tool for any Hunter. Trap ‘em. Try to lure large enemies into smaller pathways where they cannot easily get through, and then perform thrusting attacks to kill them from relative safety. – Brandon Buchholtz, SCEA Test Analyst Build a combo. Hops and rolls count as a “move†in a combo. Try dodge rolling and following that up with L1 or R1. You’ll attack in a unique way. – Brian Dunn, SCEA Brand Marketing Tips For Central YharnamFear the wolves. Wolf Beasts spell trouble. You’ll first encounter a pair of them on the Great Bridge in Yharnam en route to the Cleric Beast. Throw a Pebble to lure one out, then fight it one-on-one, being mindful to hop backwards before it attacks. If that doesn’t work, melt ‘em with Molotovs. Troll the Trolls. A Brick Troll can be a handful. Early in the game, don’t mess around: Toss two Molotovs and be on your way. If you don’t have that luxury, use lock on (click R3) and work your way around to its backside. Land a blow or two, then get out of the way. Wash, rinse, repeat. Stone’s throw. In Central Yharnam, the Hunter mobs crowded around the fire pit can easily overwhelm you. Throw a Pebble to lure one away and deal with him Mano y mano. – Brandon Buchholtz, SCEA Test Analyst Cut corners. Explore the environment to find secret paths and routes, and be sure to unlock doors and gates to create shortcuts. When you need to return later to pick up your dropped Blood Echoes, shortcuts may be a big time saver! – Kumi Yuasa, SCEA Bloodborne Producer Watch the windows. Keep an eye out for illuminated lanterns near doors or windows. These signify that you can interact with an NPC inside. Some of these NPCs will issue side quests. – Tommy Garry and Colin Fannon, SCEA Test Analysts View the full article

Meanwhile, far across land and sea in Westeros, Mira must deal with the lethal politics of King’s Landing. To the North, in Ironrath, the Whitehill occupation continues. 12. Greetings to the PlayStation community! Hideaki Itsuno of Capcom here. As you may know, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is set to release in the summer of 2015, some seven years after the launch of the original game back in January 2008 to a positive reception from fans of the series. The original Devil May Cry 4 was actually Capcom’s very first title for PS3. This year Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition will make its way to PlayStation 4 with new modes, gameplay and visual improvements, and the largest roster of playable characters in any Devil May Cry game to date. One of the biggest new attractions in Special Edition is that you will be able to play as Vergil, who has proven to be an extraordinarily popular character amongst fans. For his appearance in Special Edition, we’ve used his Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition rendition as a gameplay foundation, and added in elements of his DmC rendition to create the definitive version of the character. We’ve also added in a brand new “Concentration†mechanic, which complements Vergil’s signature “iaijutsu†fighting style, making his attacks grow stronger and stronger the more calmly and flawlessly he fights. Additionally, the “Grim Trick†ability, which allows Vergil to teleport using his “Sword Illusions,†makes for an action experience that will feel new and distinctly different from that of Nero or Dante. We also decided that we wanted to make Lady and Trish playable for the Special Edition. On top of the already playable Nero and Dante from the original game, this makes for a total of five playable characters in the game. Lady, who is a playable character for the first time in the series, has a fighting style that is conceptually quite different from that of the other DMC4 characters, with a special emphasis on firearms. Lady’s focus on long-range fighting will feel like a completely different way to take on the action. When playing as Trish, you will see that she does away with weapon switching, and instead makes skillful use of the Sparda sword in a variety of ways that require the use of relatively few buttons. This again makes for a play style that will feel distinctly different from anything you’ve seen in the game until now. “Legendary Dark Knight Mode,â€a feature we were previously unable to include in the PS3 version, will be added to the game. This mode pits players against a tremendous number of enemies. Players will have to adjust their fighting style to adapt, making for a fresh gameplay experience for even long-time fans. The game will also feature a plethora of new costumes, which are fully compatible with in-game cutscenes, bringing a fresh look to scenes some fans may have seen before. It’s a great honor to be able to bring Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition to PS4. Stay tuned for more information, and please look forward to a fun game with tons of content this summer, whether you’re a stylish seven-year veteran or a newcomer to the series. View the full article

Creating an original game is really hard; it takes a combination of creativity, tenacity, guts, skill, and let’s be honest here, no small amount of total lunacy to imagine and see to the finish an entirely new world. So making an original game that is successful, well that is just lightning in a bottle, my friends. I believe that David Jaffe did just that when he created and directed the first God of War game. God of War PlayStation GearOfficial God of War merchandise is now available on the PlayStation Gear Store at gear.playstation.com. The collection includes several t-shirts to choose from and a limited edition Kratos statue! The Kratos on Throne Statue depicts the final scene in the original God of War. The statue is being produced as a limited edition of 1,250 and stands at an incredible 29 inches tall, showing Kratos sitting upon his throne as the new God of War. Reserve yours with a deposit today! I joined the Studio later in the development of the first game and had the pleasure of being part of making Kratos who he is today. It all began with Dave’s vision of a brutal mythological world that was equal parts amazing and insane. Then slowly it coalesced with our desire to make the best “pick-up-and-play†action adventure game, seamlessly taking the player to the far reaches of their imagination. All of this was rolled into the capable hands of one of the most talented development teams I have had the pleasure of working with, the Santa Monica Studio. Together we fought our way to the finish, battling side-by-side (and sometimes even against each other) to reach the finish line and release a game that we all were proud of. As luck would have it, many of you played that game and liked it enough to let us make many incredible entries into the series. As a fan action adventure and story based games myself, I am forever thankful to Dave Jaffe for the amazing world he created, out of his freaking head. As a professional I owe much of my current career to the opportunity that he and Shannon Studstill (now head of Santa Monica Studio) gave me to go on and direct the second game The story I wrote for God of War II set the stage for an epic finish to the trilogy Dave and I had always imagined, an all out war between the Gods, Titans, and our favorite angst-ridden Spartan warrior. Going into the third game I set to work on a script and game layout that would push the PS3 to its absolute limit. While I did not continue on to direct the game, Stig Assmussen, the badass Art Director on the series, took the helm as Director and continued crafting the game and story to its eventual meteoric heights with creative gravitas and skill, and along with his amazing team created one of the craziest, most bombastic and most visually resplendent entries in the series. Seriously, every time I play through that game I see the unique brand of brilliance the Santa Monica team pours into every game they do. Imagine if a game like that came out on PS4, right? Well, thanks to the fine folks at SCEA (or Santa Monica Studio) we do not have to imagine anymore because God of War III Remastered is here! Well, not here yet, but here in the sense that we are announcing it, here. It actually comes out on July 14th. This action packed thrill ride of a game will take series newcomers and regulars alike on a retina-popping thrill ride filled to the absolute brim with 1080p gameplay, silky smooth combat, earth-shaking weapons, bosses you simply have to face to believe, and an all-new new photo mode so you can share those most tender of God of War moments, like stabbing a Minotaur in the frickin face, with your friends and loved ones. I highly recommend everyone grab a copy and play because whether you are new to the series or Spartan veterans, God of War III Remastered is one damn fine game. On this glorious day of celebration we are also taking some of the world’s best speed runners and bringing them together under one roof to watch them break, exploit, and skip all the long hours and hard work the development team put into these games, all in hopes of achieving the fastest completion time! Huzzah! Seriously, they can finish the game in less time than it took for us to agree on a dinner order, its nuts. You should just watch it. Will there be another ten years? Hmm… View the full article

  20. Okay, let’s make this 100% clear. When it comes to the Souls series – and the work of creator Hidetaka Miyazaki in general – I’m a proud, unabashed fanboy and I’ll happily assault anyone who comes within shouting distance with irrefutable testament. Duly, with From Software’s latest effort – the deliciously dark action epic Bloodborne - just a few days out from launch, I’ve got one last chance to jump on my sandbox and bang the drum Last week, Miyazaki-san was kind enough to put aside a little of his valuable time to answer a few questions about his eagerly anticipated PS4 exclusive. Read on to find out what he had to say – and you need not worry about spoilers. Like so many of you, I’m doing my upmost to ensure I know as little as possible about the gruesome treats that lie in wait when I boot up my copy of the game next Friday. The Souls titles were never specifically labelled ‘horror’, but I can think of few other games that fill me with such a sense of fear and dread while playing. It looks like you’re taking that ball and running with it in Bloodborne – just watching the trailers makes me incredibly anxious… Hidetaka Miyazaki: There are several reasons why you need a sense of horror in the world, especially with Bloodborne, which has a more chilling world view than Souls. It’s not like horror is something we specifically go for, but it’s important to have that sense of fear and terror because it directly ties into the player overcoming that and enhancing their sense of achievement. At the same time, my personal view is that the world we live in can be a harsh and unkind place. To create a game world that is always kind to players – that’s not how I see the real world. Whether it be nature or society, it’s often a harsh and unkind environment – so that translates into my games. I know there are some who prefer the ‘hub’ system from Demon’s Souls but for me, one of the most memorable aspects of your recent work was the extraordinary world-building of Dark Souls – how the game’s locations all linked up like some grand, intricate work of origami. How have you approached Bloodborne’s map design? Hidetaka Miyazaki: I wanted to take the best of both approaches. So every area is linked in one way or another much like the first Dark Souls, but you also have a hub system like Demon’s Souls. The world itself is a painted world in several respects – like Dark Souls – but essentially each area is still seamlessly connected. At the same time, to access each point, there are central hubs that act as warp points, and to reach new points, you still have the hub which also acts as a refuge as well. I wanted to combine the best of these elements so that you’d be able to easily go to areas you’ve already discovered. Since launch, the stature of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls has grown and grown, and they now inhabit pretty rarefied air, comfortably sitting among the all-time greats. How do you deal with having such an obsessive and passionate fanbase? Hidetaka Miyazaki: First of all, I’m incredibly happy to have these fans. I’d be lying if I didn’t feel pressure to meet their expectations, but I get a lot of enjoyment reading and hearing what they have to say. For these people to put so much time into my games and really discuss things that I’ve created with such passion… I’ll go online and enjoy reading what they have to say. Of course, sometimes there are things that are not so enjoyable to read – but even taking that on board, over all I take great pleasure in their comments. As a creator it’s such a valuable resource, to listen to their honest feedback and think about what game I’m going to make next. You couldn’t go out there and pay people money to put in the hours that these people do! When I went to PlayStation Experience in the USA at the end of last year, there was a Q&A panel there with the players, and I realised the level of passion that people have. Does it bother you that people are so fixated on your games’ perceived high level of difficulty, rather than other aspects of the experience? Hidetaka Miyazaki: It’s not something I find frustrating. I do understand why people ask about it a lot, but I’m happy that people are fascinated by it – in that respect I don’t mind being repeatedly asked about difficulty. It’s something that I find enjoyable to discuss. As a game creator – or a creator of anything – for people to be fascinated and ask questions and be curious about what I’m making, that’s something that can’t be taken for granted and I’m very grateful for that. Often to the detriment of my social life, I’ve found Souls games to be hugely replayable, relinquishing new secrets every time I return to them. How are you approaching New Game + in Bloodborne? Hidetaka Miyazaki: The actual set-up is essentially the same, but if you play it I think you’ll see that the feel is a bit different to Souls. There is that replayability in the same form for Bloodborne as there was in Dark Souls, but it’s a different game, so even if the feature is similar, you might have a different experience with New Game + or New Game ++ – or however many times you choose to replay. A simple example is that there is no defensive style of play in Bloodborne. That starts to be more apparent the more New Game + playthroughs you go through. So a gamer can experience a different taste of New Game + compared to a Souls game. I’d like gamers to challenge themselves and see what they can get out of New Game +. There’s been a little consternation among Souls fans on the web at the suggestion that Bloodborne won’t feature quite so many weapons as in the Souls games. Can you clarify exactly how the weapon system works in Bloodborne? Hidetaka Miyazaki: In terms of how many physical weapons there are, the amount is less than in a Souls game, but that’s to some extent a decision made due to the game design. The weapons transform – so one weapon will have various uses and strategies that you can implement. You can also customise your weapon with Blood Gems. There are different types and you can slot in up to three at a time. One gem might have you use less stamina per swing, for example. You can have many different combinations – so actually the amount of weapons in Souls is absorbed in Bloodborne by this customisation element and how someone can tailor a weapon to how they want to use it. In a way, the variety is still there, but it’s absorbed down on a customisation level, rather than in the quantity of actual weapons, much more than in Souls. View the full article

  23. Hello, PlayStation fans! We’re just a few days away from the launch of Bloodborne, and the team at Japan Studio and From Software couldn’t be more excited about the fans finally getting to experience this game for yourselves. To tide you over these last few days, I’m here to share some brand new information about some of the game’s customization and leveling, as well as the 90-second extended cut of our TV commercial. If you caught our preview of the first 18 minutes of the game during the IGN First coverage in February, you know that the main hub that players will use as their home base is the Hunter’s Dream. Find lanterns spread throughout Yharnam to return to the Hunter’s Dream at any time. In the Hunter’s Dream, you’ll be able to purchase items, level up your character by speaking to the Doll, repair and upgrade your weapons (more on that below), and get useful advice from Gehrman, the old man in the wheelchair. The main currency in Bloodborne is called Blood Echoes, which you can earn by hunting beasts and more. Use Blood Echoes to purchase items from the shop in the Hunter’s Dream, or even repair and strengthen your weapons. In your adventures, you’ll soon come across special items called Blood Gems, which can be attached to weapons in order to increase their attack power and even add special characteristics to your weapons. In the Hunter’s Dream, you can also interact with the Memory Altar in order to memorize special Caryll Runes to upgrade your character. Some runes may allow you to carry more items in your inventory, or boost the amount of Blood Echoes you receive from each beast you hunt down, allowing you to customize your hunter however you see fit. I don’t want to give away any more information so as to not spoil any major surprises for you. But I do have one cool piece news for those of you who have an official PlayStation Gold, Silver or Pulse Elite headset: on March 24, open your Headset Companion App to download a custom Bloodborne Audio Mode that’s been tuned specifically to bring the unique world of Yharnam to life. The hunt begins March 24th. See you soon. View the full article
  24. Desert Ashes just came out a few weeks ago, and I want to thank the PS Vita fans who have been playing it so much. Now I’m back to announce a spinoff of the Desert Ashes franchise. This time it’s something special — I’m sure many of you know the succesful game and comic series Pocket God. We have partnered with Bolt Creative to bring you Pocket God vs Desert Ashes. In a way this title was always meant to happen. A few years ago I was reading a interview with Dave Castelnuovo, and I saw how much he had liked my old title Mecho Wars. Then I mentioned on Twitter that I was playing Pocket God, and Dave saw. We both loved each others’ work, and I got to work with Bolt Creative at one point with both Dave and Alan and it was a fun experience. So once I finished Desert Ashes last year, I decided to hit them up to make this happen. Pocket God vs. Desert Ashes will play similarly to Desert Ashes, so you will get the usual campaign, skirmish and multiplayer modes. The PS Vita, PSTV and PS4 versions will also get their own exclusive multiplayer maps too, and possibly more things to come in the future. The Pocket God franchise does have a reputation for doing lots of updates To celebrate this annoucment, there will be double XP in Desert Ashes for the next 48 hours. Dave Castelnuovo // Programmer, Bolt Creative I’ve known Luc for some time. We were both around in the early days of the mobile gaming revolution, and he was kind enough to create this game/cross over with characters from both our games. Like he said, I really love Mecho Wars and it’s awesome to be a part of its spiritual successor. I’ve owed my PS Vita since day 1, and before that I remember standing outside the Metreon all night to get my PSP when it launched. PS Vita is such a great gaming platform; it’s the only mobile device that has real console-like controls and marries that with things we play with in the mobile world like touch screens and accelerometers. I hope this is the first of many games we launch on the platform. Allan Dye // Designer, Bolt Creative I’m a huge fan of Luc’s work, so I was excited when he came to us with the idea of mashing up Pocket God with Desert Ashes. As the designer of the Pocket God characters, I personally get a kick out of other interpretations and Luc’s are awesome! I love the off-center humor he injects into everything and it meshes great with the PG humor. As a bonus, he added a few new characters, which I think are fantastic! View the full article
  25. Hi everybody. It’s Jakub from Grip Games. A few months ago, our friends at Toxic Games announced that their brain-twisting first-person puzzler Q.U.B.E. was heading to PS4 and PS3. Since then, we’ve taken over the development and publishing duties from them, so that Toxic Games can focus on their future projects while we will bring you the best version of Q.U.B.E yet — the Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut. Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is a first-person puzzle game. You wake up inside a mysterious white cube and you will have to solve dozens of physics-based puzzles and platforming challenges, using a pair of hi-tech gloves that can manipulate some parts of the environment to get out. What’s new and really cool about the Director’s Cut version is the story. It’s like the story itself is a puzzle you have to figure out inside your own head. It’s hard to explain, I don’t want to spoil it! The new story was created by veteran writer Rob Yescombe. He’s written for games like The Division, Alien: Isolation, Rime, and the Crysis franchise. The second major addition is a time-trial game mode, called Against the Qlock, where the game pits you against the clock. Combining precision, logic, and quick reactions you’ll have to speed through each of the ten levels using a variety of pick-ups to your advantage. Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is coming to both PS4 and PS3 and will be released this summer. The game’s on Unreal Engine, so expect it to look sleek and gorgeous, and the PS4 version will run in 1080p at 60 frames per second. And like with all our games, we’re supporting cross buy.
