  4. Hello, PlayStation.Blog! We’re happy to say that today is the day Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines launches for PS Vita and PlayStation TV, on PlayStation Store for $19.99! To celebrate the launch — and as a thank you for purchasing — starting today until the store update on March 17th, you will receive two additional gods as a bonus that cannot be normally unlocked from within the game. As a quick reminder, Oreshika is a story about revenge that takes place in ancient Japan. Your clan was sentenced to death for crimes they did not commit, and then had two curses placed on them. You have just been resurrected by a god and are now searching for those who cursed and conspired against your clan so that you may redeem the honor of your family name. Within the game you will choose from 8 unique classes for the warriors of your clan. Each class has unique strengths that add to the strategy when choosing which warriors to take into battle, along with which items and equipment. Or you can leave it up to your trusted advisor, KÅchin. Travel to distant lands of other AI or player-controlled clans. In these far-off lands you can explore new dungeons, find new rare items, discover new gods, combat new demons, and interact with the towns of the distant clans. Within their towns you can purchase exotic items, adopt their members, hire mercenaries to aid you, or form a union with members of other clans. Invest in your town to invite armorers and weaponsmiths to create heirloom items, which can grow stronger the more they are used and can be passed down the generations. Unlock secret arts to unleash devastating damage to your enemies and show them the might of your clan. Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines is a deep and challenging JRPG featuring beautiful artwork come to life, the authentic original voice cast, a game mode that takes an estimated 100 hours of gameplay to complete, and an epic story about finding those who cursed your family and seeking retribution. Through countless deaths, your clan becomes more powerful… Through countless lives, the curse will be broken… View the full article
  5. Hey there, fellow FreQ! It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to talk to you about Amplitude, but with PAX East right around the corner, and looking at the great progress we’ve been making in development, it seems like a great time to show you what we are up to. Team Amplitude has been working feverishly to bring a sweet build of the game to PAX East, and as of this past week, we think that we nailed it. In the past few months since showing the game at PlayStation Experience, we’ve put a real focus on multiplayer, hoping to get groups battling it out at PAX East. While we were focusing on the gameplay for Amplitude multiplayer, I started posing a question to the team: What can we do to even the playing field when pro players sit on the couch to play against new players? During a team meeting, I discussed thoughts that I had for things like “rubber-banding†and power-up distribution, and out of nowhere, Amplitude Audio Lead Pete Maguire threw out the idea of team play. TEAM PLAY!? Genius! Team play is something we’d never done in Amplitude before, and allowing players to team up 2v2 or even 3v1 sounded like an amazing way to even the playing field without disrupting the current design. We decided to give it a shot, and after some iteration and tweaking, we are proud to say that it’s already super fun. It’s been a really interesting challenge, balancing the gameplay carefully between casual and hardcore. We want to create a game that can be super fun in a party situation, while also being tight and sharp in a way that could potentially even appeal to the competitive gaming community. I think that we’re on the right track now that we have both the classic Free-For-All Multiplayer mode and the new Team Play mode. Time will tell, but we have a couple of months to really suss it out, playtest the crap out of it, and get some great feedback from fans. We’re excited to showcase this brand new feature at PAX East this week. There will be a few Amplitude kiosks set up at the Harmonix booth on the show floor (#4224). We’ll be there playing the game with everyone, so stop by and check it out if you’re attending! Speaking of Team Play and PAX, we were invited by the fine folks at Penny Arcade some weeks ago asking if they could use Amplitude as one of the games in their Omegathon tournament! They specifically asked if we had a way to whittle down teams. Luckily, we were working on the perfect feature for that, and we can’t wait to see folks go head-to-head with one another in front of a large audience Saturday morning of PAX East. Keep an eye out for us on the PAX East floor and in the Omegathon this weekend. In the meantime, we’d like to give the PlayStation community an opportunity to check out new gameplay footage in the world premiere of our very first Amplitude gameplay trailer here on the PlayStation.Blog, just above this very paragraph. We hope you like it! View the full article
  6. Hey everyone! I’m Alonso Martin, the lead developer of Heart Forth, Alicia — an upcoming Metroidvania RPG about a young wizard on her journey to stop a Spirit from consuming her homeland. Heart Forth, Alicia is a ’90s-inspired adventure that combines the electrifying gameplay of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the expansive world & dungeons of the Zelda series, and the unfolding story style of Xenogears… except it’s a little darker and has its own fantasy twist. You can watch the trailer here. Up till May last year, I’d been the sole developer of this game for a few years. Thanks to the incredible support of the Kickstarter crowd and the outlets that covered the campaign, the game grew into a much bigger project, and it’s thanks to them that we’re able to bring the game to PS4 and PS Vita in early 2016. Even the legendary Manami Matsumae (composer of Mega Man, Mighty No. 9, Shovel Knight) came aboard to produce a few tracks for the game! These past months have been one of the best things that’ve ever happened to me. Features of the gameHeart Forth, Alicia’s inspired by games that hold a special place in my heart and by the things I loved about them. There’s always been something magical about the open-world nature of games like Zelda and Super Metroid where everything’s filled with content, and the compelling story style of games like Xenogears or Final Fantasy VII. These two things are seldom packaged together in Metroidvanias, so I took it upon myself to make a game where the player can enjoy both the fun, open-ended exploration experience with upgrades and unlockables, and the excitement of taking part in an epic storyline like those in some of my favorite Square games of the late ’90s. Making this happen is a tall order for sure, but if Heart Forth, Alicia can even bring back part of the wonder and magic those great games had, I’ll consider it a job well done. Adventure through an intricately detailed world filled with wonders, creative puzzles, secrets and lethal dungeons. Engage in fast, agile melee combat with over 20 special attacks & upgrades, and devastating magic spells to annihilate your enemies. Play with powerful RPG elements that include the gear, loot, sidequests, and gameplay depth that make for a classic RPG experience. Discover 5 secret fairy familiars to crush, shock, freeze, and burn your enemies, or save you at your most dire moment of need. Experience a deep and unfolding story that takes place centuries after the War of the Fatherlands, starring a cast of fascinating and complex characters. Going to GDC!The nice guys at PlayStation gave us the opportunity to showcase a PS4 demo of the game at GDC this next Wednesday, March 4th @ their South Hall Expo booths. We will be showing a part of the recently overhauled introduction, which is also sporting the recent change into widescreen mode, adding 80 sexy pixels horizontally. This is both really exciting and thrilling for me, as it will be the first time the game will be shown in public after several years in the making. The team and I have worked our best to make this PS4 demo as fun and engaging as possible, so it’ll be really rewarding to watch people play through it. Stay tuned for more updates on Heart Forth, Alicia, and thanks for reading! View the full article

  11. Hello, PlayStation Blog readers. This is Kitao, PR Manager for Bloodborne in Japan. Today I would like to introduce a brand new boss enemy from the game. Just like in Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne will feature many boss enemies of all shapes and sizes, and there will be a variety of ways to defeat them. So I think you will find that the gameplay in Bloodborne is rich and diverse. Show/hide I am happy to introduce a new boss character called “Darkbeast.†This electric beast emerges from giant skeletal remains. With lightning coursing through its body, it bombards the player with its erratic and off-speed movements. You can check out this beast in action in the video just released as part of IGN First. DarkbeastA malformed beast enveloped in blue lightning. With a long body made of only bones, and a wrinkle-covered skull, people say this beast must be very old, very ancient. Or perhaps, it is a descendent of the city of the plague of beasts. This marks the last post covering content from IGN First’s month-long coverage of Bloodborne, but we have more in store for you before the game launches on March 24, so please stay tuned. 12. I can’t tell you how exciting it’s been to be a PlayStation developer. I jumped on board with the PS4 and Vita launch of my horror game Home last fall, and now I’m excited to finally share with you some lovely news about my new title in development, Alone With You! Alone With You will be available to play for the very first time ever on PS4 at the GDC Expo PlayStation booth. Barely a dozen people in the entire universe have even seen the game up until now, so imagine how exciting it is to know that next week, tens of thousands of conference-goers might give it a go! (Replace “exciting†with “terrifying†for a more accurate assessment.) The GDC demo is a small, vertical slice; it takes you through the intro, one mission, and even lets you see how the dating works. But I know lots of you won’t be able to make it to GDC, so allow me to share a few exclusive tidbits with you right here! What’s This Game About, Again? To recap: you play as the sole remaining member of a doomed terraforming colony. Your planet will crumble and implode in less than a month, and you must use your remaining time to try to escape. There is only one escape pod left, and it isn’t functioning. Even worse, the only people who specialized in its systems are all dead as a result of the colony’s failure. But the colony’s AI is still with you, and together you plan to get yourselves off the planet — by recreating those key colony members and learning how to fix the ship, so you can both flee to safety. In Space, No One Can Hear You HugSimilar to Home, Alone With You is a narrative-focused exploration game. It’s not about dodging bullets or tripping instant-death cutscenes — it’s about soaking yourself in the game’s world and hopefully getting just way too emotionally invested along the way. As you can see here, you go on missions that your AI companion — lovingly named AF4B/3B by the company that made it — sends you on. You’ll need to find specific things, and use your scanner to gather data. As you explore the game’s environments, you’ll inevitably come across other, less critical items — some of which help immerse you in the world around you, and some of which play a role when it’s time to do some romancin’. The face buttons on DualShock 4, or on PS Vita, let you interact with AF4B/3B, even if you’re doing other things. So by using the Square, Triangle or Circle button, you can make choices and keep dialogue moving. Once you’ve completed each mission, AF4B/3B will ask you to come home, and while it crunches the day’s data, you can take a breather. But sometimes, at night, you might be asked to visit the colony’s holo-sim chamber, where the digital versions of those old colonists are trying to orchestrate your salvation. Except on these occasions, a particular colonist might not want to talk about work… Let’s Talk About LoveAlone With You is a “romance adventure,†but that doesn’t mean it’s just another dating sim. In fact, true to form, I’ve adopted a kind of focused minimalism with the game; it’s not about maxing out dating stats or trying to form a love harem — rather, it’s about the curious threads you discover when love happens at the most inopportune times. (Can love bloom on a doomed terraforming colony?) You’ll speak to the colonists as you gather the data you need for them to help you, but you’ll also get a little one-on-one time, depending on the choices you make. In these scenes, the things you may have seen or not seen, or decisions you have made previously, will affect what you can talk about — and decisions you make while doing so can affect what happens later on, too! There’s one really important aspect of Alone With You’s romantic gameplay, too, that I want to discuss: it’s completely open to all players, regardless of gender or orientation. There are four potential love interests in the game, and you can choose to spend time with whomever you wish — and yes, you can enter your name, for that personal touch. The Look and the LifestyleOkay, I’m going to level with you all: Alone With You is a giant love-letter to the Sega CD. Yes, you read that correctly; that old Genesis add-on from the mid-nineties. The game features a color palette chock full of those classic greens and purples, and a hearty 16-bit resolution (the UI runs at 1080p, though, and is beautiful and clean). It also features a few nifty graphical tricks that, I hope, make it stand out from other titles. Even better, Alone With You has lots of whimsical, full-screen animation for everything from using doors to revving up your sweet hover shuttle. Everything (so far) is hand-drawn by yours truly. I’m using my years of comic-making experience to (I hope) deliver some tasty, unique visuals. The Future Sounds FunkyIf you played Home, you might have noticed its sparse, eerie soundtrack — one that had pretty much no music, and lots of creepy ambience. Well, with Alone With You, I am stoked beyond belief to be making a game that features an actual soundtrack you’ll want to listen to, even when you’re not playing! Longtime collaborator Ivor Stines (who created that creepy title theme for Home) is on full-time as Alone With You’s sound designer and musician. Every beat and beep is his creation, and in grand Sega CD fashion, you’ll get a sophisticated soundscape that belies the game’s classic visuals. Which is why we both want you to hear a track from the game right now. Lots of games have ambient, melodic tones these days — but what about some funk? Desperately gathering materials to fend off your impending doom has never sounded so… booty-shakin’. So that’s today’s update! If you’re attending GDC, please check out the game at the PlayStation booth. There’s still a lot of development to go on the game, so if you continue to have questions, post a reply and I’ll answer you! View the full article
  13. Hello, fellow explorers! It’s been a while but, finally, I’m happy to say that thanks to our friends at Rising Star Games, the western release of La-Mulana EX on PS Vita is right around the corner! The game is already out in Japan and the response from Japanese fans has been overwhelming, so I hope you’re all looking forward to playing it soon, too. If you’ve played it before, the idea of diving into La-Mulana once again will be very exciting, especially as PS Vita means you can go exploring whenever and wherever you like. However, other people might not have even heard of La-Mulana — what a tragedy! That’s why I thought I should give a quick introduction to the game, before introducing the improvements and additions that make La-Mulana EX the ultimate version. What is La-Mulana EX?I’m glad you asked! La-Mulana is the original Archeological Ruins Exploration Action game, and a throwback to the days when games tested you to your very limit. First created by developer NIGORO in 2005, players use their skills and wits to explore the ruins and discover the ultimate treasure without falling foul of the monsters and traps in their way. It might look like a straightforward, Metroidvania-style platformer, but it’s not just an action game. You’ll also need to solve riddles and keep mental notes to make progress, so it’s much more! Of course, we’re thinking of La-Mulana EX as the ultimate version of La-Mulana — as the blog title says, the EX stands for Extra. In developing the game, we’ve worked with NIGORO to make some important tweaks that not just tighten up the game’s puzzle logic but also enhance the overall experience. We also added new material that everyone from new players to dedicated archaeologists could enjoy; it was a lot of work, but the results are worth the effort. What’s New in La-Mulana EX?For starters, the new Monster Bestiary is where you can check out details of every monster you slay and character you meet. It’s useful to read, but you’ll also get to see some wonderful art for the creatures in the ruins. We were amazed when we saw how much previously unseen art there was for La-Mulana, so this was the perfect way to show it off. We’ve also tweaked the gameplay. La-Mulana lets you go almost anywhere you like from the start, which can be a bit daunting to some. When we first started developing La-Mulana EX, the plan was to have two modes: the original version for returning players, and a revised adventure that was more accessible for new players. However, as time went on, we decided to bring both versions together in a way that improves the experience for everyone. Of course, this doesn’t mean we’ve made La-Mulana EX easier. Trust me, it’s still just as challenging as ever — it’s just also more accessible for those who might be too scared to enter the ruins otherwise. The signposting is improved, some of the puzzles and obstacles have been altered slightly (Don’t rely on your memories if you’ve played the game before!), it’s now possible to undo the Hard Mode curse if you want to, and so on. We’ve even added more languages (French and German, on top of English, Spanish and Russian) and improved the old translations, so now even more people can enjoy La-Mulana than ever before. Got Any Tips, Please?Absolutely! Here are some to get you started: Read every stone tablet you find. The clues to solving the ruin’s puzzles are there for you to unravel! Collect the Shell Horn and listen for it sounding. That means something has changed in the ruins for you to find. If you hit a dead-end or meet an enemy you can’t beat, don’t be afraid to run away and explore somewhere else. I know it’s old-fashioned, but please read the e-manual! Seriously, read it. Especially page 26. I hope you all enjoy La-Mulana EX when it arrives on PS Vita! And if you have any questions in the meantime, please put them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them. Thank you! View the full article
  14. Earlier this month, we announced PlayStation HEROES, a new initiative that brings PlayStation 4 owners and celebrities together to benefit some great charities, and today the official PlayStation HEROES app for PS4 is available for download on PlayStation Store. Now is your opportunity to enter for the chance to play Bungie’s Destiny in-person with legendary snowboarder Shaun White in March to benefit Make-A-Wish. To celebrate the start of PlayStation HEROES, we held a special event in New York City with some of our PlayStation HEROES – Shaun White, Stephen Curry, Yasiel Puig and multiplatinum recording artist Snoop Dogg. All four HEROES played some of their favorite PS4 games with some special members of PlayStation Nation. Check out some highlights from the event: PlayStation Heroes | PlayStation.com I think my favorite point of the night was when Stephen Curry was battling a Marine, playing for the USO, in NBA 2K15, and was sweating his way through a super competitive game. And that’s what’s going to make PlayStation HEROES so fun – we will be working with celebs that play games and are uber competitive. Since we announced PlayStation HEROES, many of you have asked for celebs from the gaming and entertainment world – and don’t worry, we heard you. Remember – to enter, just download the official PlayStation HEROES app from PlayStation Store and purchase a $1, $5, $10 or $15 theme (or a special $20 bundle with all four themes). Each dollar spent counts as an entry, with the exception of the $20 bundle, which counts as 31 entries. And, if you download the app before 1:00 pm Pacific on March 3, you’ll receive 5 entries for the Shaun White sweepstakes. Act fast because the sweepstakes closes at 1:00 pm Pacific on March 3rd. Don’t miss your chance to meet Shaun White and play with him in person. After you download the PlayStation HEROES app, be sure to explore the app to find out more about future events and which celebrities will be taking part in those events. We’ve got Yasiel Puig in April, Snoop Dogg in May and Stephen Curry this summer. Keep posting to let us know who you’d like to play with and against and we will work to line them up. It’s a great way to use gaming for a good cause – while watching your favorite celebrity recognize your true skills! View the full article
  15. Greetings, PlayStation nation! I am beyond excited to announce that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s Havoc DLC has arrived on PS4 and PS3, heralding the arrival of Exo Zombies, four new multiplayer maps, and the AE4 directed energy assault rifle. Let’s kick things off with Exo Zombies. With a celebrity cast including John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, RED, Burn After Reading), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Titanic, Edge of Tomorrow), Rose McGowan (Planet Terror, Scream), and Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street), Exo Zombies takes a new spin on the zombie survival experience. As four Atlas Corporation employees battling deadly hordes infected by a DNA bioweapon, players must survive the onslaught and unravel the mysteries of the outbreak in Exo Zombies’ standalone story. But these aren’t your run of the mill undead—armed with exoskeletons and unpredictable mutations, the enemies in Exo Zombies are faster and more lethal than ever before. For a little friendly competition, there are also four new multiplayer maps to dive into: CoreFight through the ruins of a nuclear fusion plant that features a both narrow pathways for close-quarters combat and long sightlines for long-range players. Rack up enough points and unlock the map-based scorestreak, which unleashes a swarm of decontamination drones to take out your enemies. SideshowSet in an abandoned inn beneath Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, Sideshow’s wide-open exteriors and rooftops are prime for snipers and getting the jump on the competition. At certain points in a match, the clown inn’s sign may tip its hat and start raining down a barrage of explosives with rainbow smoke trails, which you can pick up and lob at other players. DriftHigh in the Rocky Mountains, you’ll find Drift—a picturesque snow-covered ski resort. Its three primary lanes keep the pace high and the action focused, but players can use a number of elevated vantages and a rotating carousel in the center of the map to maintain a competitive edge. Don’t get too comfortable, though, as an avalanche may occur unexpectedly, taking out anyone in its path. UrbanThose that enjoy fast, frenetic matches will love Urban. Taking on a smaller, three-lane design, Urban is perfect for SMGs and close-range weapons. However, new pathways and routes can emerge as the futuristic mega structure goes into lockdown, so watch your back. Finally, those that pick up Havoc will unlock the AE4 directed energy assault rifle and its Widowmaker variant, which Season Pass owners gained early access to in January. Like its heavier sibling, the EM1, the AE4 fires bursts of energy, but performs like a lightweight assault rifle, making it quicker on the draw but offering infinite ammunition—just make sure you don’t let it overheat. For an in-depth look at all that’s included in Havoc, check out the Activision Games Blog. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing everyone online! View the full article
  16. Hello, PlayStation fans! I’m Claudio Pinto from Fair Play Labs, and I’m excited to share some news with you: we’re going to launch our latest game, Color Guardians, on both PS4 and PS Vita on April 14th of this year. You might have seen Color Guardians if you were with us in Las Vegas at the first PlayStation Experience, where we had a chance to share our work so far. If you couldn’t make it, though, let me get you up to speed — here’s what our game is all about! In Color Guardians, you play as the three Guardians, Rod, Lia, and Grock, as they race through their worlds to restore the stolen color. It might look at first like a regular side-scrolling action game, but there’s a couple of twists to the gameplay: not only do you have to dodge and jump incoming hazards, but you have to switch between three lanes while doing so, hopping in and out of the background and foreground. If that weren’t tricky enough, you ALSO have to switch your own color on the fly to match yourself with pick-ups and objects in the world. People who tried it at PlayStation Experience described it as being an “Ikaruga-style†game, which is a pretty fair (and flattering) comparison. Color Guardians is our first game to come out on PS4, and we want to make sure it’s got everything that PlayStation gamers have come to expect to go with it! It’ll be released as a cross buy game, for starters, so you can enjoy it on the couch or on the go. It also allows you to earn a Platinum Trophy, if that’s your thing (it’s definitely one of mine)! Beyond the extras, of course, it also happens to be a vibrant, fast-paced experience that really shines when it comes to life on PS4 and PS Vita. When I started Fair Play Labs in 2004, I’d been working in business (translation: boring) software for a long time, but I really wanted the chance to make something I could share and enjoy with my son. We were gaming together on PC, and he suggested to me that I should program games instead. It would be easy, he suggested; he would design them and I could code them. It turned out to be a little trickier than that. I was able to find a lot of talented young engineers and artists right here in Costa Rica, but breaking into gaming was difficult at the time — if you wanted to get your games picked up by major publishers, everybody wanted to know how many games you’d had picked up by major publishers! It turned out PlayStation was our way out of that pesky little Catch-22: when they started the Sony Developer Incubation Program here in Latin America, we finally got our chance to publish our first game on PSP — and the rest is history. Most enjoyable of all, bringing this latest game to PS4 and Vita has given us the chance to share the game in person with PlayStation fans all over the world. We had a blast in Las Vegas last year, and we’re coming back to the United States in just a few days for Game Connection in San Francisco! If you’ll be at the show, we’ll be there with a handful of other developers from Costa Rica, showing off what kind of games we’ve been making lately in our part of the world. Come and say hello, and you can try out Color Guardians for yourself before it launches in April! If not, of course, the whole game awaits you on PS4 and Vita on April 14th. Until then, we’ll be hard at work. Play Fair, everyone! View the full article

  19. Hello everyone! I’m Laurent Mercure, community manager at Frima. Last fall, we launched our latest game, Chariot, on PS4, and we were thrilled to have the PlayStation community embrace it! With Chariot, we wanted to make a game that was accessible and that players of different skill levels could play together and have a good time. My colleague Phil explained his vision in a previous post: Chariot, Bringing Gamers Together. However, being seasoned gamers ourselves, we always envisioned a more hardcore side for Chariot as well. We wanted to give skilled players a worthy challenge to tackle. This is the idea that spawned the Speedrun mode for each level. Speedrunning levels in Chariot and scoring the gold medal isn’t easy. Even the timers in level 1-1 are pretty unforgiving. We know that a lot of dedicated PlayStation players are Trophy hunters, so I’m here to teach you a few tricks to help you get the Greased Lightning trophy (Getting gold in all 25 levels). 1. Always Be Winding Up Don’t just drag the Chariot around with your rope at full length. Keeping the rope short will help you make certain jumps, while winding up will allow you to speed up the Chariot, even on a flat surface. Keep a distance from the Chariot, then attach your rope and wind up while walking. The Chariot will gain more speed than your character, so you can jump on it while it passes and just ride it. When walking uphill, try jumping ahead of the Chariot every time you wind up to speed up your ascension. 2. The Ropes Are Elastic The royal engineers used a little bit of rubber while designing the Chariot’s ropes. Try using this to your advantage. When the weight of the Chariot feels like it’s dragging you down, try playing with the length of the rope a bit. If you wind it up rapidly after it reaches its maximum length, the Chariot will be launched upward, making it easier to get from platform to platform. Remember to anchor your character when you do that, however, otherwise you might have to start all over again. 3. Cut Through the Walls In some levels, the regular path has you taking the long way around to get the momentum necessary to break a brittle wall. If you’re equipped with the Repulsor, the Canary or even the Sprint Boots, you can cut directly through these walls and save a huge amount of time. This advice is device-dependent however, which brings up the next tip. 4. Choose Your Gadget Wisely Some levels are mostly flat, some levels are all about going up, and other levels are mazes riddled with shortcuts. It’s crucial that you choose your gadget accordingly. The Sprint Boots may seem like the most pertinent gadget for a speedrun, but having more raw speed may end up causing you to fall off narrow ledges. In levels with a lot of death rails, the Repulsor can increase your speed. On levels with a lot of platforming, an Attractor double jump can let you skip entire areas. Trial and error will teach you which gadget is the best for each level. 5. Upgrade Those Gadgets I kept the most important tip for the end. You absolutely must upgrade your gadgets, as they will have a major impact on your speedrun times. Not only will an upgraded gadget have a greater effect, but its cooldown will be reduced, allowing you to use it more often. That’s true for all the gadgets except the Peg… you don’t really need to upgrade the Peg for speedruns. If you keep these five tips in mind, getting a gold medal in every level (except maybe the hidden level) will be a breeze. If you’re the competitive type, though, getting the gold isn’t the end goal; you can compete with other players on the online leaderboards. There are already some pretty impressive times on the PlayStation leaderboards! If these tricks got you interested in speedrunning Chariot, take note that we’re launching a worldwide co-op Speedrun contest today, and the stakes are pretty high. You can find out more about the competition directly on our website. We will be streaming on our Twitch channel this evening between 5pm and 7pm Eastern to show you a couple more tricks. Lastly, if you’re in the Boston area next week, we’ll be at PAX East in booth 10057. Come say hi and show us your speedrunning skills! Thanks for reading! View the full article
  20. Hey everyone! We’re only a few days away from the arrival of Shiftlings on PS4 March 3rd, and to celebrate, we thought we’d share with you a few of the devious inspirations behind the creation of some of the game’s various worlds and bonus levels! First off, we designed 50 levels spread over five unique worlds. What you don’t know is there are also five additional, unlockable levels for you to conquer. These bonus levels are a completely different experience, if you manage to actually unlock them. The inspirations and ideas behind the levels: Event HorizonWe wanted to achieve a hectic and wildly fun level with constant movement. So we decided that you would have to ride an elevator through the entire level while avoiding obstacles. Naturally, you’ll also have to avoid getting pushed or pulled off of your platform. Of course we also just had to have this platform carried by a giant robot of doom along with a sea of fire waiting for you should you make a slight misstep. HyperactiviaIn Hyperactivia we introduce gravity beams and springs, which can be particularly fun if you have both players being bounced around while switching sizes. To add to the chaos, you’re being chased by a giant spinning flame wheel of death. Think of it like an extreme game of tag! VeravilleWe haven’t shown this level to anyone yet, are you excited? Get your spurs because Western ways are the flavor of the month here, partner! In this level, you will fire yourself out of a cannon onto conveyor belts that are moving in all directions. You’ll have to shift the sizes of your characters accordingly, so going down the wrong path doesn’t have to mean inevitable death (Or does it?). Earth 2.0This should feel like home! Here we have hinged platforms that will slow your progress to a dead stop if you don’t know what you’re doing. Every time you swap sizes or jump, look out for swinging platforms. In the interest of hilarious mistaken deaths, the player must ride an elevator down to the exit while controlling the platforms to block hazards and find a safe path… or else! SherbertDisappearing platforms are another fun way to halt your inexorable progress to beating our game. Think you’re safe on a platform? Oops, there it goes. This level is a marathon of disappearing platforms where you have to keep moving to avoid coming down with a serious case of the deadsies. Oh yeah, did we mention you’ll be chased by a giant bank of laser beams? We sincerely hope that you enjoy all the work and ideas we put into Shiftlings, even when you’re being zapped for the hundredth time or are staring down yet another maniacal robot. We know it will create a fun and challenging experience for you! See you on the flip-side and thanks for reading! View the full article
  21. Do you remember the good ol’ days when you built castles and fortresses? Then imagining your castle’s defenses attacked by the armies of darkness in the ultimate battle of good versus evil? That’s exactly what inspired us to create The Castle Game, a new single-player strategy defense game for PS4. We are Neptune Interactive Inc., a small, Toronto-based studio comprised of a programmer, an artist, and an audio wizard, and we want to give you the experience of the medieval times. In the Castle Game you build your fortress using a variety of medieval weaponry. Archers, knights, sorceresses, catapults, traps, and more are at your service in your fight against the minions of evil. You can create elaborate mazes with walls and traps, or build an impenetrable fortress of spiked walls and burning oil, backed up by archers with flaming arrows, knights at choke points, and long-range catapults that rain stony death. Like what you see? You’ll love what we have in store for you. We’re huge fans of Warcraft, the Lord of the Rings, and the Game of Thrones. The Castle Game’s environments and designs are hugely inspired by these awesome works of art. One of the most important things we wanted to achieve with The Castle Game was to make the DualShock 4 controls feel slick and natural. RTS game controls can be quite complex, especially on a controller. So we focused a lot of our time streamlining the control scheme. Here are a few of the things we targeted: Quickly moving through battlefield using FPS style controls, with a bird’s eye view of the action. Auto-selecting defenses and reducing constant button presses for building, upgrading, selling, and repairing. Focusing and directing the attack of nearby defenders at the press of a button. Unleashing powerful spells with tactical precision. Having every attacker class have his own audio danger cue, giving you warning of where and when they attack even if they are out of view. As an example of an audio danger cue, we have a pesky little Barrel Bomber who screams “incooooming†as he wheels his bomb straight at your walls. Once you hear his scream, you’ll only have moments to blast him with your Lightning spell before he gets too close and takes an explosive chunk out of your defenses. We are planning for a launch sometime in the next few months. View the full article
  22. It’s almost one year since we announced that forma.8 was coming to PS4 and PS Vita on PlayStation.Blog, so it’s time for an update, isn’t it? In the announcement we shared a “late 2014†as a tentative release date and, as you can see since the game is still not available we, err… missed it, plain and simple.
Two factors contributed to the delay: first we focused on launching Futuridium EP Deluxe on PS4 and PS Vita and it took a bit more than expected, then we decided to raise the bar on forma.8, with a massive visual and technical overhaul. As crazy as it may sound for a small team like MixedBag and on a long in the making project like forma.8 (we started working on it back in 2011!), we really felt that we had to try harder and polish the game further, pushing more and more to reach our original vision. And we’re proud to finally share our progress with you for the first time here, right from the new demo we’ll show at GDC next week! Bringing An Alien World to Life
Forma.8 is an action adventure where you pilot a small robot probe stranded on an alien planet, on a dangerous mission to recover a powerful energy source from huge underground caves and bring it back to an orbiting space mothership that is too low on energy to continue its intergalactic voyage. It’s a so-called ‘metroidvania’, where you have to explore a huge interconnected open world, solving puzzles, killing enemies and getting new power ups to progress. The alien planet and its eerie mood plays a huge part in the game, and giving it the right look makes or breaks the whole forma.8 experience.
First, while we settled on a peculiar, very stylized graphic design early on, there’s a lot of subtle detail we can add without giving it up. This is a quick look on how the game looked like back in 2012 and how it looks now, from the same area. This is one of the zones that changed less from start, please don’t search online for other screenshots from the 2012 build, we know they’re around and they could be embarrassing for us! Oh we were so young and inexperienced…
Here are a couple more examples of the forma.8 improved look. Another thing we’re working on hard are animations. Everything was a bit stiff before, but thanks to the addition of the awesome Andrea Marchi to our team (by the way, welcome Andrea!), things really changed during the last two months. Andrea is a very talented 3D modeler and animator and his years of experience are helping us injecting more life into the forma.8 world.
And for life we mean… say hi to one of our new friends, the creepy giant spider! All enemies and creatures in forma.8 are being redone from scratch by Andrea, sporting new animations and sometimes a totally new look. To sum the redesign up, we’re focusing on improving all the particle and special effects. Ranging from subtle ambient particles suspended in the air to big explosions and lava burst, with added full screen effects like wobbly heat haze distortions in the vulcano area. Under the Hood
We’re using Unity3D as our engine for forma.8, and since the start of the project things evolved a lot: four years are ages in videogame and technology land. When we started working on forma.8, Unity offered a 3D physics engine and almost no 2D capabilities out of the box, so we had to wrestle with it to make a 2D game with what was essentially a 3D game-making tool. Things worked wonderfully, but then Unity evolved and got a lot of awesome 2D features, so we decided to switch forma.8 to the new 2D physic system in Unity. It required a lot of coding work but…
Ok, ok, that’s boring stuff I know, so let’s make things short: since 2D physics drive all the game, giving it a nice unpredictable spin, we can now throw a lot more action and interactive stuff on screen, with even better performances as icing on the cake. Which means: full resolution and 60 constant fps on PS Vita (on PS4 that’s a given), a magic number that’s really important in a smooth game like forma.8. It simply doesn’t work at 30fps, trust us, we’ve tried it. What Now?
After this big visual and technical transition, things are going smoothly on the development front, and we’ll post more and more about the progress on the game in the future. But we won’t make the error of giving out another release date that we may miss: we made this mistake before (ah, inexperience!), and we don’t want to promise something we can’t deliver. We want forma.8 to be the best game we can make, it’s our little baby after all, and we don’t want to rush it. It’ll still take a bit of time, but we really hope you’ll enjoy it when it’ll came out. Since we’ve shared only ‘redesigned stuff’ today, how about a glimpse at one of the never-seen-before, work in progress areas? Here it is, and trust me it’s huge, forma.8 is like 1 pixel small here, and he has to deal with that giant… spider thing? Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter or Facebook, we can’t wait to share more with you in the future, hope you enjoyed our update on the project! Bye from Italy! View the full article
  23. For many that have completed The Evil Within, the mysteries surrounding Sebastian’s partner, Juli Kidman, are among the most discussed plotlines in the game. These questions (and perhaps some new ones…) will arise in Part 1 of Kidman’s DLC adventure: The Assignment. Assuming the role of Kidman, The Assignment features an increased focus on stealth gameplay mechanics as you not only untangle the secrets of what happened to her, but learn the truth behind her connection with Mobius. Introducing new enemies and gameplay tactics, The Assignment sets the stage for the concluding chapter of Kidman’s Adventure, The Consequence, releasing later this Spring. The Evil Within: The Assignment releases on PS4 and PS3 Tuesday, March 10th for $9.99. Watch the trailer above, and for an extended look at gameplay, follow Bethesda on Twitch and tune in Monday, March 9th at 4pm Eastern. To save on all three DLCs planned for The Evil Within you can purchase the game’s Season Pass on PlayStation Store, either on PS4 or PS3. In addition to The Assignment and The Consequence, this package will also feature content surrounding the safe pick for everyone’s favorite villain — The Keeper — in our third DLC: The Executioner View the full article
