Story by Devils Own @ GamersMint.com. Despite the game’s lackluster reception, Gearbox Software has decided to continue supporting Duke Nukem Forever and has drawn the curtains on the first piece of DLC. The Hail to the Icons Parody Pack brings to the table, four new multiplayer maps and a trio of interesting takes on some of the popular modes of today’s shooters. More details on the maps were detailed on the game’s official forum: Call of Duke – Duke engages in modern combat in a war-torn city. Foes don’t stand a chance against the Duke when he spams the map with the N00b T00b. Sandpit – Players take the role of mini-Duke in a giant sandbox with two bases at either end made out of children’s toys. This map features Sticky Bombs. Inferno – Time machine engage! Duke does combat in a hellish landscape of lava and teleporters. Who turned on the 16-bit graphics, and more importantly, where did this DFG come from? 2Forts1Bridge – Hats? Duke doesn’t need no stinking hats. Give him a minigun and he’ll beat off all comers. And about the new game modes: As the title suggest, players will find themselves joining hands to freeze and shatter their opponents for point streaks and combos in Freeze Tag. The one who holds on the girl for the longest time in Hot Potato takes home the prize. And finally, Hail to the King is your typical free-for-all. The DLC pack is scheduled to arrive sometime in Autumn. Pricing has yet to be announced. However, first access club members will receive the DLC for absolutely free. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by Jessica Conditt @ Joystiq.com. The Walking Dead is coming alive with the first screenshot from Telltale‘s adaptation, featuring the escaped criminal Lee Everett and the young girl, Clementine, looking terrified in front of a decrepit motel. Telltale has apparently stepped up its graphics game, and just in time to make The Walking Dead as gory and twisted as its ink-and-paper form. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by Jessica Conditt @ Joystiq.com. Battlefield 3‘s lock-and-key social gaming network, Battlelog, is scheduled to launch its beta in September, its full system in October, and is currently in an extremely selective alpha testing stage. But that doesn’t mean non-alpha players can’t see what it looks like, right now. The Robin Hood of Battlelog sent us some behind-the-scenes screens of the alpha social and profile system, all of which you can check out below. Story by Jamie Donnelly @ Gamersmint.com. Activision has announced that Prototype 2 will be releasing on the 24th of April 2012. No EU release date was given, but it will probably be the standard three days later. A new trailer of the game has also been released, via GameTrailers, and it shows Prototype 2 protagonist Sgt. James Heller taking on Alex Mercer who fans will know from the first game. The trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, but it’s still pretty exciting. Check it out below: Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by Alexander Sliwinski @ Joystiq.com. The launch date for PS3′s Splinter Cell Trilogy appears to have shifted once again, this time to September. Ubisoft told us in May that it didn’t have a ship date for the title, but several major retailers listed an August launch at the time. The bundle had previously missed its appointed March and June launch dates. The latest release date of September 27 is now listed by the retail trinity of Amazon, GameStop and GameFly (which conveys only publisher-provided intel). We’ve contacted Ubisoft for an official sitrep on the Sam Fisher HD bundle. Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by Jordan Mallory @ Joystiq.com. Fresh news out of Comic-Con for zombie hunters and presidential-daughter-babysitting-simulator enthusiasts alike: the previously announced HD remakes of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X will be shambling and moaning onto US shores this September. RE4HD lands on September 20, with Code Veronica X HD‘s charmingly incomprehensible plot following a week later on September 27. That’s a few weeks after the far superior Japanese launch, not that we’re bitter or anything. Story by Owen Good @ Kotaku.com. Insomniac Games has launched the beta for a web-based strategy game called Global Resistance, described as a “massive strategy game,” featuring all players battling on the same global map in a game offering crossover features with the upcoming console title. In a trailer shown at Resistance‘s Comic-Con 2011 panel, the conflict between humans and Chimera resembles table-top strategy games like Risk and Axis & Allies. Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith cited Risk as an inspiration. Players will progress in rank and experience, fortifying their base and, it appears, building out a character for special player-vs-player conflicts. Gameplay in Global Resistance will earn players unlockables, multiplayer skins and other premiums. In addition to linking to players’ PlayStation Network accounts, it can also link to their Facebook accounts for social purposes. “The massiveness of it is on the map. When you’re fighting skirmishes on the map, youre fighting with thousands and thousands of people,” Smith said. Smith said a beta for the game should launch tomorrow, being available through the game’s official site, myresistance.net. Smith said Insomniac is still tinkering with the length of matches, leaning toward a multiple-week length. “We want it to be an important event.” On another note, Insomniac noted that the multiplayer beta for Resistance 3 will be the first week of August, and will feature two modes: Team Deathmatch and Chain Reaction Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by Leah Jackson @ G4TV.com. It was outed by Entertainment Weekly during Comic-Con 2011 that Talia al Ghul will be making an appearance in Batman: Arkham City. The daughter of the villain Ra’s al Ghul will be voiced by Stana Katic (Castle). If you’re not familiar with Talia from Batman lore, she played a love interest of Batman’s and became the eventual mother of the caped crusader’s son, Damian. Here’s a picture of Talia’s character design in Batman: Arkham City. I must admit that after seeing Harley Quinn and Catwoman’s designs, I was a bit disappointed with Talia’s. What do you think? Also, don’t forget to check out the news that Solomon Grundy will also be making an appearance in Arkham City. It seems like just about everyone can make it into this game. Story by Brenna Hillier @ VG247.com. Mortal Kombat just turned it up a notch by revealing its final DLC character as A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger. This trailer is a ball buster. Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain were shown alongside a final, unrevealed character, and speculation has ranged across the entire Mortal Kombat canon as well as stopping by several Xbox 360 exclusives, but persistant whispers of a movie monster clearly won out. Freddy’s claws, link to hell and relationship with fire are simple horror techniques but even against the freak show that is Mortal Kombat’s cast he looks terrifying. Sold! Story by Stephen Totilo @ Kotaku.com. With no new James Bond movie coming out soon enough for Activision, we are indeed getting another polish of the GoldenEye remake for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as a screenshot dump from yesterday more or less confirmed. Today, the game is official, announced in the form of a press release that manages to neither mention the Nintendo 64 original or last year’s Wii remake upon which this not-quite-new game is based. But who hasn’t heard of at least the first GoldenEye, which for many players is the Bond gaming standard? Reloaded, like the Wii remake of last year, re-tells the events of the 1990s GoldenEye film, re-casting current Bond Daniel Craig in place of Pierce Brosnan. Some levels pay homage to the first game, but this is no level-by-level remake, not in single-player or multiplayer. Activision promises that the game will run at 60 frames per second and will support the PlayStation Move Sharpshooter gun controller for immersive play and (my words, not theirs), a control experience similar to what was offered last year on the Wii. The game also has some bonus content planned, according to the press release: “Additional to the legendary story campaign, the game introduces the brand new ‘Mi6 Ops Missions’ – new, distinct levels separate from the campaign that span the varied environments from the story and challenge players to complete different Assault, Elimination, Stealth and Defense objectives. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded also takes multiplayer to new heights, maintaining and improving its renowned four-player split-screen action and adding full, adrenaline-pumping 16-player online matches with more maps, weapons, characters and game modes than ever before.” The Wii version’s online only supported eight players. The most distinct feature of last year’s Wii remake was that, like the N64 original, it allowed players to sneak through their first-person shooter. You could shoot your way through each mission, but you could also be a better Bond, sniping security cameras, baffling enemy soldiers with nifty gadgets and keeping the body count as low as a suave agent should. GoldenEye 007 Reloaded will be out this fall on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That’s fall of this year which is already stuffed with first-person shooters. Good luck, James. *Story by: CritiKiL COD games have almost always been of the ‘run and gun’ type. It’s now just a shame how people will do anything to get enough kill-streaks by “camping their asses off”. There’s a place for that, but not the way people play NOW. Many games which developers are putting out are not what many of us ‘mature players’ are seeking. Favoritism is going to those who know nothing about ‘team-play’ and tactics IMO. I ‘used’ to say that, ‘Camping is a Weapon‘ and that ‘Camping is a Strategy‘…But to those who’ve heard me say that, let me remind you that I was referring to gameplay where there was the goal of ‘protecting a bomb’ like in Demolition and etc. The way people camp on a totally ‘run and gun’ gameplay is not a strategy, it’s a means to acquire killstreaks quickly-enough to enable and call in total chaos of advanced weaponry and airstrikes (not to mention, Attack Dogs!) to overwhelm those who run out or run ‘inside buildings into traps’, and end the game at an unfair level. But I shouldn’t even be talking about ‘fair’ regarding some of the latest games which have developed. I cannot believe what efforts are being put forth just to get a higher rank. What ever happened to earning medals and rewards for ‘Team-tactics’? Is getting an award for teamplay and helping a dying member by reviving him, too much to ask? It would definitely turn the tides towards people who want ‘medals’, to change their style of play to a more ‘team-oriented’ fashion. It would be a START as opposed to the way people play video games now. This song ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops: Camper Song by BrySi Bieber‘, sums things up quite accurately. So I’ll share it with you because it tells my story much better than words could ever do ~ lol: Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...

Story by: CritiKiL When playing first-person shooters online it is sometimes obvious that certain classes have an unfair edge when compared to others. When we heard that Battlefield 3 would allow snipers to lay down (aka prone), we were a little worried that this could potentially ruin the multiplayer experience, however we are now hearing that EA DICE’s developers are doing things to balance things out. So basically, new features have been added to balance the addition of prone to Battlefield 3 gameplay.*It will prevent snipers from being overused and stops snipers from constantly camping. A recent article posted on www.Battlefield03.com tells us that developers have taken action to balance out their prone ability by giving them scope reflection and sway. This means that snipers who do not move a lot will give away their position thanks to scope reflection, this is a great way of combating camping in our opinion. When it comes to scope sway this is something we have seen in other games such as lots of games in the Call of Duty series, we think that this is a realistic way of combating snipers sitting back and picking off multiple enemies in quick succession, perhaps on consoles you will have to hold in the analog stick to hold your breath for a limited time to keep the crosshair steady. This news was revealed on a podcast where DICE’s community manager, Daniel Matros, spoke to Dont Revive Me Bro, you can listen to and watch the full podcast for yourself,*below. Check it out and then feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section at the end of this post, are you happy with EA DICE’s attempts to balance the sniper class? Story by Joel Johnson @ Kotaku.com. Microsoft has trouble making hardware. Sony has trouble running online services. What if the next Xbox and the next PlayStation are one and the same? A few months ago, while reporting about the then unannounced Wii U console for Nintendo, we stumbled on an interesting ancillary rumor: Microsoft and Sony were in active discussions regarding their next consoles. For two giants in the home video game console market to be talk from time to time isn’t wholly surprising. Sony and Microsoft are clearly competitors in the console market, but they’re also unlikely allies in a gaming landscape undergoing upheaval brought on by the likes of Zynga and Apple. Triple-A console games like Halo and Uncharted are still going strong, but the expansive growth in the industry at larger has been in the casual and mobile space—an area in which Microsoft and Sony only dabble, especially if you count Sony’s PlayStation Vita as more of a “portable home console”. (Don’t get me wrong. The Vita looks fantastic. But it doesn’t really compete with, say, the iPhone.) Launching a new home console is an expensive and risky endeavor. Microsoft took a multi-billion dollar loss when the Xbox 360 had its infamous “red ring” crashes; Sony lost a few billion getting the PlayStation 3 off the ground. The real money is in games—and increasingly, in online services, like downloadable games and other media offerings. It has come to light that someone—probably Microsoft—has registered the domain Microsoft-Sony.com. On its own, that means little—domain names are cheap to buy and easy to spoof—but it does prompt a moment of reflection: Microsoft and Sony working on their next console together makes a tremendous amount of sense. Sony still has the hardware knack. A few aesthetic clunkers aside, Sony still makes lovely, sturdy hardware. The PlayStation 3 still looks perfectly fine. And my launch version has held up well enough over the lengthening years. Plus, Sony has access to tremendous production facilities of their own, unlike Microsoft who largely contracts out to third-party builders for not just assembly, but components. (Crack open your phone someday. There’s a good chance it has some Sony hardware in there somewhere.) Microsoft makes the best development tools in the industry. “Best” is subjective, but most of the developers I know greatly prefer programming using Microsoft’s excellent tools over those of their competitors. That’s certainly been part of the reason so many cross-platform games begin their life on Xbox and are ported to the PlayStation later. (Although certainly as multi-platform development has matured, it’s increasingly a port-as-you-go situation.) A Sony-built hardware platform that ships with Microsoft development tools on Day 1 would give game developers a tremendous leg up in unlocking the power of the hardware. Xbox Live is the best online gaming platform in existence. While PC-based Steam is a close second overall, there’s no better platform for getting games, media, and networking with friends than Xbox Live. And a unified Xbox Live and PlayStation Network would be instantly a huge community, which would be attractive to publishers and advertisers. Plus, well, the hack. Sony got a black eye over the hack against the PlayStation Network over the last few months. While the problem has largely abated, online has never been one of Sony’s strengths. (Evinced by their numerous aborted music download services and hesitance in putting the PS2 online, for instance.) Sony doesn’t have the technical acumen to run end-to-end networking platforms, while Microsoft is perhaps the best in the business at doing so. Sony gets to retreat into hardware and content, its greatest strengths. Remember, Sony was the Apple of the ‘80s and ‘90s: a hardware company that happened to sell and produce a lot of media designed to be played on the hardware it sold. Every time Sony has strayed from their core competencies, they’ve been half-hearted at best—catastrophic at worst. But they remain tremendously profitable in the areas where they just build good hardware—their HDTVs, for instance—and leave the fancy network and software business to someone else. It might get Microsoft a toehold into Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson has been on shaky ground since before the iPhone, but even its modern Android phones—including the gaming-oriented Xperia Play—aren’t anything special. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is pretty great. It just needs apps—like games. A combined Sony and Microsoft attack on the mobile gaming space would be pretty powerful. (Although wholly unnecessary in making a Microsoft+Sony home console a success; it would just be nice.) We’ll probably know sooner than later if Microsoft and Sony intend to team up on a new console. And there are plenty of reasons why they might not want to go in together—loss of their own exclusive platform being the most compelling one—but there sure are a lot of upsides to a team-up, aren’t there? And if you think about it, that Microsoft is making hardware and Sony is making software to compete against each other is actually the exception of their relationship, not the rule: Sony laptops have been running Microsoft Windows for years. You could even look at that as another reason why Microsoft would be willing to cede the Xbox hardware business: Sony’s latest hardware experiments, like their tablets, run Google’s Android. It might be worth a few billion here and there to Microsoft to bring Sony more fully back into the fold. (See also: Nokia.) Do I think this is going to happen? Probably not. I’d give it a 20% chance using my Statistical Confabulator with a +/- 10% for the heat added to our economy by Nascent Fanboy Psycho-Kinectic Pedantry. But it sure doesn’t sound totally crazy either, does it? Score: 0 (0 votes cast) More...
