Are multiple sigs a nuisance?

Recommended Posts

SO I like to stop by UF from my mobile, but lately with all the animated sigs and multi-sigs, I can't. It runs out of freakin memory before I even get the last three posts in!

I think they are actually a nuicance, and don't see it as neccessary. I'm happy for the guys that got the MAG beta (actually Im REALLY REALLY jealous!) but an extra sig isn't neccessary IMO.

Also the animated ones...NOT the U guys, as their animation is slight and done in such a way where it's very tactful, but those that are hosting the MW2 countdown.....damn. It completely ensure's I can't view a thread they have posted in via mobile.

Anyhow, this discussion arose in the Ranger's section, and I wanted to get some opinion on it. What do you think?

Animated sigs can't be seen on mobile unless you have a flash player. They are automatically not seen. Right?

Not on my cell........I can see them with the Instinct, they simply don't do the animation and show the first frame.

It's more about the bandwidth they require, and the time it takes to upload the forums.

I guess it depends on the mobile phone browser you are using, cause if you are using opera mobile or ie for mobile there are no graphics at all just a simple text version of the forums that is very fast loading

I see a lot of members have already removed their second sig just as a matter of courtesy so it doesn't really matter how the poll votes go as I suspected most community members are just happy to make other members UF experience better once they are made aware of an issue which may be causing others problems.

I've use to come on UF regularly on my mobile but now I stopped unless I am at a computer. It's the ads taking too long to load before that with animated sigs or two sigs a person I personally had no problem on my blackberry. I actually go to a Infiniti forum regularly and they have heavily animated sigs and I haven't had any problem.

Ok well if by the majority its fine with the community than by all means… UF tends to let things go the way the community wishes. This wasn’t that big a concern.. after all its not as if porn or other disallowed graphics were being posted. It was meant more to just inform the community that for some members it causes some minor issues. The reason this was put forth in a poll type general opinion way and not some sort of new rule to be enforced.

As usual if sigs are done in a manner that demonstrates a respectful and tactful way then we can live with a few double sigs. Sigs are meant often as a way to show pride and affiliation as well as individual accomplishments So for the most part a lot of individual freedom is granted. The purpose of this thread/poll was more of a informative post in order to let the community know that for some too much graphics can hinder their ability to view the forums.

So no one is stating they aren’t allowed, but akin to having a huge graphic or a large kb sized image such as mega animations for a sig that can cause large bandwidth usage and page loading delays some degree of moderation should be observed. Sigs get posted and reposted every time an individual adds to a thread, so just be aware that the size can quickly become multiplied. Knowing this the community should just be mindful of it since its not so much a double sig issue as much as it is a self enforcement for size and kb.

If you want to use multiple sigs than use this information as a way to be considerate to others, perhaps lessen the size somewhat so that they don’t take up half a thread page by one post as well as if animation is used try to reduce the amount of frames using only the minimum needed for the desired result.

And for the sake of all of us please don’t get out of control and start having three.. four or fifteen graphics for use on your sig. This issue wasn’t brought up to censure anyone’s signature. It was meant just as a means to inform the community as a whole. Giving the dedication we all have for respect towards one another I’m sure the community will take it in a good way and be somewhat mindful when it comes to their sig choices. There won’t be any steadfast rule made to disallow two sigs.. as long as its done with some degree of moderation and consideration towards others and the majority of the community is ok with it.

I’m speaking on behalf of the Ranger team that looked into this with thanks for Tool_Minion for posting the poll on the issue and everyone who gave their opinions. The owners of UF may or may not concur as they have the final say on things..
