  1. It’s been a while since we’ve updated you all on Until Dawn but I’m pleased to be back on PlayStation.Blog with some thrilling news. Today we are delighted to announce the release date for Until Dawn! Until Dawn | PlayStation.com You will be able to determine the fate of eight friends starting on Tuesday, August 25th! This is a really exciting time for us as we enter the final stages in the run up to release, so you can expect to see plenty more coming from the Until Dawn team over the next few months. I’m also really thrilled to reveal a new cast member that you’ll be seeing in Until Dawn – Peter Stormare, who you might recognise from Prison Break, The Big Lebowski and (more recently) Arrow! He gave some incredibly powerful performances in the motion capture studio and you can tell from the end result in the game that he had some fun with the character. We couldn’t be happier to have him in the games and I can’t wait for you to see him in full flow. If you’re itching to get your hands on Until Dawn you can pre-order it from today, so that you’ll be able to play from day one and you’ll unlock a special bonus scene for free! This exclusive scene sees Matt and Emily, a new couple, out on the mountain – but it’s not long until they start to suspect they aren’t alone. Stay tuned for more info on Until Dawn, but in the meantime watch our new trailer and let us know what you think! View the full article
  2. It was great to see that our recent gameplay overview trailer was greeted with such a positive response. Now, we are ready to release a new video, the Savage Road trailer. We know that everyone was crying out for gameplay and we were happy to oblige. With your appetites now sated, it’s time to take a deeper look at the story and some of the characters. As you know, Mad Max is an open-world action adventure game set in the post-apocalyptic universe made famous by the films. However, while you may recognize certain elements, it is truly a standalone game with original characters, storyline and setting crafted from the ground up to rival the best games out there. So, what’s the story all about? Well, at the start of the game, as is so often the case for Max, he is simply trying to avoid contact with what passes for humanity in the Wasteland. He is searching for some sort of respite, whether it is in a real world place or somewhere in his head. We start our story as he gets tangled up in a fight with a group of warboys. These are the zealous foot soldiers of the Wasteland Warlord and ruler of Gastown, Scabrous Scrotus. Stripped of his prized Interceptor, he is left for the Wasteland to chew up. However, he receives help from an unlikely companion, a Wasteland Blackfinger named Chumbucket, who realises that Max has ‘otherworldly skills’ as a driver and survivor. Chum’ convinces Max that together they can craft a mighty machine, which he calls Max’s Magnum Opus (meaning ‘Great Masterpiece’). In the game, you will have much use of Chumbucket’s insider knowledge of the Wasteland and its inhabitants. As long as your paths are aligned, he will also be of great value in improving and weaponizing your Magnum Opus. He will even man the harpoon and repair your vehicle in battle when you need it. Both Max and Chum are acutely aware that the car will require a powerful V8 engine if it is to survive in battle. In the video you will see that Max ventures into the heart of Gastown in order to compete in a race to the death. The prize — the V8 he so desperately needs. First he will have to face his enmity with Scrotus’ most feared henchman, Stank Gum, a despicable character who revels in spreading Scrotus’ terror in the most grotesque ways possible. The closer Max is driven to breaking point, the more he struggles with his sanity. (There’s a hint of that in the video, too!) Enjoy Savage Road and we’ll be back soon with more content! 3. We announced our new game, What Remains of Edith Finch, at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event last December but haven’t said much about it since. It’s come a long way in the last 6 months and we’re finally at a point where we’re ready to start talking about (and showing!) more of it. At E3 this year we’ll be demoing the beginning of the game and our first story. Today we’re releasing our first screenshots along with a new trailer. It’s hard to sum up the game in a screenshot because the game is a collection of short stories. Each of those stories is about the death of a different Finch family member and each is meant to look and feel different from the others, the way no two people in any family are alike. Which is why to start with we’re focusing a lot on the Finch family house where the game begins. As Edith, players will be exploring this house and eventually unlocking bedrooms for all the various family members. Inside each bedroom is something that tells a story about that person’s life (like a diary, or a collection of photos, etc). The Finch family house, by the way, is crazy. The family has been living here for the last hundred years and each generation adds on to it. By the time Edith arrives the house is an enormous artifact influenced by a range of eccentric, stubborn folks. Hopefully it’s also a place that comes across as believable and familiar. Our goal has been to make the house feel fantastical but at the same time like it was all made out of stuff you could buy at Home Depot. And that’s the game in a nutshell: a surreal experience that’s grounded in a familiar world. The deaths in each of the stories are a little bizarre but the really strange thing is death itself. The house is both a monument to the people who have died and a record of how the family reacted to those deaths. Where the short stories focus on individuals, the house is the story of the family as a whole, told through architecture. Hope you enjoy your first look inside the house! View the full article

  8. It’s great to be back here on PlayStation.Blog to talk to you about Need for Speed — and in just a few weeks’ time at E3 you’ll get to witness the full unveiling, but until then we just want to touch base on a few things, so let’s clear the air. While we’ve been busy making the game we’ve also been reading, watching, and listening to you, our NFS Community. The feedback you’ve provided across every medium possible has urged us forward, and directed us towards our goals. To know that there’s such a passionate set of gamers out there is one of the best feelings you can have as a developer, so thank you for that. Every day someone proudly proclaims that we simply must have customization in the next Need for Speed game, so that’s exactly what you’ll have. When Need for Speed launches later this year you’ll be able to fully customize a car, in the process turning it into a truly unique resident of your garage. We’ve been working really closely with Speedhunters, our very own community who have helped us deliver a Need for Speed that is grounded in authentic car culture by diving into the world of past, present, and emergent trends of the urban car scene. Need for Speed will unleash a passion for cars and speed when it launches this fall! With more than 20 years of history in its rear view mirror, we’re bringing Need for Speed back with a reboot that delivers on what Need for Speed stands for — rich customization, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that drives your Need for Speed experience. We can’t wait to see you at E3, where among other things you’ll also be able to see customization in action for the first time. You won’t want to miss it! View the full article

  10. Whenever I interact with the PlayStation community I’m always struck by their passion and excitement for gaming. I saw this firsthand at E3 2014, when I teamed up with PlayStation and Fathom Events to bring the E3 Press Conference live to over 10,000 fans around the country as part of the PlayStation E3 Experience in movie theaters. It was amazing to see fans line up all across America to experience the news and announcements live with others in the community. This year I’m happy to announce that the PlayStation E3 Experience will return on Monday, June 15. Due to the quick sell-outs in 2014, we will be staging it in significantly more theaters — and yes, it will still be free. Last year tickets in most markets sold out in 15 minutes or less, so for 2015 we are increasing the number of theaters by more than 150%, with at least one theater in every state across the US — including Hawaii and Alaska — plus 3 cities in Canada. You and fellow members of the PlayStation community will get to see the full PlayStation E3 press conference in HD on the big screen, plus there are special bonuses for those who come out to the theater experience. I’ll be hosting an exclusive 30-minute in-theater post show with extended footage and interviews with developers, and everyone who attends will take home a PlayStation surprise, which will consist of PlayStation goods and digital codes we can’t disclose yet. (Last year attendees received early access to the Destiny Alpha and Battlefield: Hardline beta, along with a great poster and VIP laminate). To make it fair to everyone in the community, this year we are giving you advance notice of ticket sales. Free tickets will be made available on Wednesday, May 27 starting at 9:00 a.m. PT at playstation.com/e3experience. Eighty percent of theater capacity will be reserved for ticket holders, with 20% of the theater held for those on the wait list, who will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. We saw the big lines last year and want to make sure that everyone has a fair chance to be in the theater. The PlayStation.Blog guys also tell me that their big PlayStation LiveCast show will be back again in a big way, kicking off with the PlayStation Press Conference on June 15th, starting at 5:45 p.m. Pacific Time. They’ll have plenty of game demos, new trailers, and developer interviews over the next three days – and you’ll be able to watch on your PS4 or PS3 using the Live Events Viewer app, too. Stay tuned for more details. View the full article
  11. Throughout the development of Batman: Arkham Knight, our goal has been to create the ultimate Batman experience and give players the chance to be the Batman like never before. Batman: Arkham Knight | PlayStation.com For us that has meant building out all of Gotham City, showing Batman at the peak of his powers, and putting him in control of a brand new, unstoppable Batmobile. But it’s not just about the power fantasy of being the savior and protector of Gotham: Batman will be tested like never before by a united force of super-villains that are hell-bent on taking him down. It’s the moments when we are all tested that we explore in our new live-action trailer: times of trial, and how we can rise above them. Selflessness, determination, and courage are all traits that we share with the Dark Knight, and so in many ways we can all be the Batman every day. For those who take up the cape and cowl on June 23rd, you’ll need all of these traits and more to truly be the Batman, and take on the greatest threat Gotham City has ever seen. What does it mean to be the Batman? Let us know moments when you’ve channelled the Dark Knight in the comments below. View the full article
  12. Back in December at PlayStation Experience, our friend Gio Corsi let everyone know that, with the help of Sickhead Games, we would be bringing Octodad: Dadliest Catch to PS Vita. Today Young Horses is happy to announce that on May 26th for $14.99 you’ll be able to take Octodad on the go! With the launch of Octodad: Dadliest Catch on PS Vita, we’re also introducing a couple of new features we think both current and new players will enjoy. First of all, Octodad will be available as a cross-buy title, which means that if you’ve already purchased the game on PS4, you’ll automatically have access to play it on your PS Vita. Although we won’t have cross-save support, we have added a new set of Trophies to the PS Vita version of the game to give you even more opportunities to achieve the impossible with your normal human hands. Another cool feature is the ability to play co-op locally using one device. With Sickhead Games’ help, we managed to stuff in enough control for two players (one on each side) to wobble your favorite dad through everyday life while rubbing shoulders with a real life friend. We’re excited to share this cool new way of playing Octodad and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. <3, Young Horses View the full article
  13. Hello everyone! In just one week we’ll finally have the chance to bring the world of Magicka to console for the first time and we’ve been prepping for it by wearing flame-retardant robes — it’s embarrassing when you accidentally set yourself on fire during fits of excitement. We’ve also created this list of the 11 things you should know about Magicka 2 ahead of its launch on May 26th. Vlad is Not a VampireFirst of all, don’t listen to the rumors about Vlad. Sure, he may look like a vampire. He may act like a vampire. But, he is not a vampire, honest! He is just… Vlad. More Magicka, More Madness, More Misanthropic MischiefMagicka 2 is a sequel where we picked up all the things that the fans loved about the first game and improved them. All the things that were good are now great! Casting and dodging at the same time makes for a much more fast-paced game. We’ve also added a new story, a game-changing artifact system for a big pile of replayability — and, new for 2015, working netcode! Friendly Fire is Always OnBeing a powerful and irresponsible wizard is a lot of fun, but it does come with the price of loneliness. The friends you do make tend not to last long, unless your aim is good and your healing magicks are potent. Spells do not discriminate between friend and foe, so watch that crossfire! How Do You Spell Success?Magicka is all about conjuring spells by combining eight different elements, using up to five at a time. These elements will then create a spell that you can cast for all kinds of constructive or destructive purposes! Not only that, but every combination can be cast in a direction, or as an area-of-effect, or into your melee weapon, or even upon yourself. Not only THAT, but certain elements combine to create unique effects; for example, you can combine water and fire to make scalding steam, or water and cold to generate shards of ice, or even life and shield to make landmines that heal people! There are thousands of possibilities, and at least most of them are good ideas. It’s a Kind of MagickMagicks are powerful spells that brings death and devastation for your foes and friends. Giving yourself some hasty feet, summoning a wave of flames, or reviving an “accidentally†exploded teammate; that sort of thing. Magicks can be cast from a hotbar with a cooldown system, or by using the right element combinations. The element combinations are harder to pull off, but more useful in the long run! However, not all magicks can be conjured with combos… Play with Your Friends Until They Aren’t Your FriendsCouch co-op, online co-op, or a mixture of both! Magicka 2 supports every sort of multiplayer, whether it’s two wizards on one couch playing with two more online, or four players in four places, or three players in one room connected to one guy with an online PS4 in his secret underground bunker. We also use the PS4 chat support to ensure you can yell at the wizard who just took off your head with a boulder, whether they’re sitting next to you or not. Challenge ModesIn Magicka 2, we have added “challenges†as a game mode. Challenges are either score or time-based game modes where wave after wave of angry creatures will hunt you and your friends to the ends of… well, of the level. Thankfully, the longer you last during a challenge, the more magicks you can unlock to help you survive! Check your ArtifactsArtifacts — the good kind, not the weird rendering kind — are components that you can turn on or off to change the experience of Magicka 2. They can do everything from messing around with the look of your game to fundamentally changing the way you play! Want your wizards to look really fat? Want the game to have a laugh track? Want to turn the Fire element up to 300% damage? Want to turn every explosion into an IMPLOSION? Artifacts can do it! You can select up to six different artifacts to mix and match your way into a completely new game mode. Unlock more artifacts and effects by playing the adventure mode and challenges at different difficulties. Items, Glorious ItemsCustomize your wizard with all sorts of different items to get a more varied gameplay experience. Change up your melee attacks with different weapons, or make your spells even more excessive and ridiculous with a selection of staves! Once you start mixing items and artifacts, too, that’s when things get really weird. Not every item can be unlocked the first time you find it, however, the items your friends are carrying might just fall on the ground if your friends were to, say, stop living for a few seconds. We’re just saying. No real reason to bring it up. What were we talking about, again? Cloud SavesPlay on your PS4 at home. Continue at your friend’s place. Get thrown out of your friend’s place because you didn’t ask if you could come over. Continue back at home. Easy access to your personal wizard anywhere, any time! New Technology and “Working Netcodeâ€Magicka 2 has an all-new game engine that keeps it going, and lets it really shine on the PS4! The fire is hotter, the death beams glow more, and most importantly, you can link up with your friends over PSN quickly and easily, letting you get to the mayhem much faster. Jump in with your friends, or make (and rapidly unmake) new friends with other PlayStation fans in a pick-up group! View the full article

  18. Are you ready for some action? Today’s the day that Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed is… unleashed! As Neptunia’s very first hack ‘n’ slash (developed by Tamsoft, the fine folks behind the Senran Kagura games), you know this game will bring the action and the laughs to your PS Vita! The setting is a peaceful Gamindustri, but the CPUs and the CPU Candidates tasked with protecting the land find all this peace a little dull. Enter esteemed journalists Famitsu and Dengekiko to give these Goddesses something to do! What is it they have them do? Why, fight in newsworthy brawls for fans to read about as a meta-commentary on the game industry, of course! Pick from a roster of ten characters, including newcomer playable characters Famitsu (weapon: a giant shrimp) and Dengekiko. From combo-crazy to heavy damage-dealers to ranged attackers, each character is equipped with her own unique fighting style! You can go solo or you can pair up two characters to fight in battle, freely tagging in the other with a tap of the D-pad. Strategically choose your characters based on their fighting styles and the requirements of the mission, or just pick them to hear the character-specific banter they’d have. The more times two characters fight in battle, the higher their Lily Rank will get, unlocking special bonuses like faster EXP gains! During battle, you’ll face down relentless hordes of enemies using a variety of light and heavy attack combinations both on the ground and in the air. As you attack, you can build up your SP gauge to unleash devastating special attacks you’ve learned. And this wouldn’t be a Hyperdimension Neptunia game if you couldn’t perform an HDD transformation — build up your EXE bar to assume your ultra-powerful Goddess form with new attack combos and her own special attacks that are heavy on the pain! Even Famitsu and Dengekiko get their own transformations. Don’t get too confident though, because if you take too much damage or spam too many high-level attacks, you’ll experience a “Costume Break,†dramatically lowering your defense but upping your attack. For all of its flashy hack ‘n’ slashery, we’ve still gotta pay homage to our RPG roots. You’ll get to level up your characters and boost their stats in battle, while also collecting enemy medals to unlock powerful new weapons, stats, and equipment — including unbreakable outfits! Like any good RPG, you’ll also receive a variety of missions that go beyond slaughtering enemies, including some special mystery missions! Even when you’ve finished the main story, you’ll have two extra challenging game modes, one of which pits you in a tournament against the other characters in a one-on-one test of strength and skill. Show ’em who the real Goddess is! So grab your ridiculously oversized gun and blast your way into a hack ‘n’ slash experience with depth and humor, and let’s bring a little action up in this piece! 20. Bloodborne’s boss fights are dead scary, and heightening the sense of terror is the epic musical score. The ambitious music project was a globe-spanning collaboration between JAPAN Studio, From Software, and SCEA’s Product Development Services Group (PDSG), and was recorded at London’s prestigious AIR Studios. And you can now set your heart racing even when you’re not playing Bloodborne, with the score available to listen to on its own — from the punishing orchestral stabs of “Blood-starved Beast†to the soothing respite of “Hunter’s Dream.†To celebrate the CD and digital release of the Bloodborne Original Soundtrack and gain a little insight into how it was made, we spoke with Tsukasa Saitoh, Yuka Kitamura and Nobuyoshi Suzuki from the sound team at FromSoftware; composer Ryan Amon, whose previous credits include the soundtrack to Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium; and Peter Scaturro at PDSG. Congratulations on the CD and digital release of the Bloodborne Original Soundtrack! What influences and inspirations drove the style and composition of the score? Ryan Amon: Visually, there was a Victorian-Gothic crossover and just a hint of fantasy. The game developers discussed certain musical elements that they thought would represent the world of Bloodborne well, and the colors of the artwork were very influential in deciding the colors of the score for me as well. Also, Bram Stoker’s Dracula was one of my first soundtrack purchases when I was younger, and with composer Wojciech Kilar’s recent passing in 2013 I felt that it was something I wanted to pay tribute to in my own way. Tsukasa Saitoh: We drew on the keywords of “mortal struggle†and “horror†which were determined at the beginning of development, and also built up an image from things like the boss and map designs. In order to express the early-modern Victorian setting, we decided to rule out organ, woodwind instruments and certain brass instruments, such as trumpet, and so on. Rather than something grandiose, we aimed for a black and withered atmosphere. The music in Bloodborne has been highly praised for its enhancement of the game world and atmosphere. Was storytelling part of the music brief? Ryan Amon: We definitely talked about the story and why the main character is on his journey, and the fact that there is no one really holding your hand as you progress. There was a great emphasis on capturing the small intuitive details of the world, especially the loneliness and forlorn beauty of it. (L-R) Tsukasa Saitoh, Nobuyoshi Suzuki, Yuka Kitamura, Ryan Amon and Peter ScaturroEach boss battle comes with its own intense theme. How much did the design and back-story of each specific boss affect the way you composed the music? Nobuyoshi Suzuki: The design and back-story had a large effect on me. The One Reborn, whose music I was in charge of composing, is a ghastly figure of ritual mass-sacrifice, and so the feeling of horror and of something disgusting was the underlying premise, with greater themes of adornment and royalty. So I started with the simple image of using deep bass-instrument riffs to invoke a sense of royalty, and the choir to express adornment, and began composing from there. Yuka Kitamura: While composing the music for (rollover for spoiler) Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos, I sensed themes of the universe, of finality, of something godly, and I was filled with visions of the end of the world as I worked on that song. What were some of the challenges of working with composers and performers on three separate continents? Peter Scaturro: Talking about music is a challenge with every project, but this one was particularly unique because the language barrier added another layer of potential misinterpretation. In this regard, the production team at JAPAN Studio was key to the success of the score. And what were some of the benefits of working in this way? Peter Scaturro: I think we all benefited from the cross-cultural exchange of ideas presented during this project. The Japanese composers brought a unique approach to the music that was very refreshing. And I think that the American composers were able to inject some of the sensibilities of a modern film score. We’re all very proud of the fusion of ideas that are presented in the Bloodborne score. Finally, the music you wrote for Bloodborne will haunt the nightmares of gamers for years to come. How do you feel about that? Tsukasa Saitoh: That’s quite an honor. My hope is that the fans will immerse themselves so fully in the world of Bloodborne that listening to the music, even when they’re not playing, will trigger lots of precious nightmares!
