  1. The IGN First for February 2015 is Bloodborne, and I couldn’t be more excited about that. As a huge fan of the Souls series, I jumped at the chance to helm this project. In preparation for our month of coverage, we flew to Japan to visit the offices of From Software, as well as Sony Japan Studio, and let me tell you, we have so many awesome things in the works. We’re proud to kick off the month with the first 18 virtually uninterrupted minutes of Bloodborne. I could gush on and on about how great the opening is, but honestly, the footage speaks for itself. The capture is from a slightly older build and the game is still under development, so definitely be aware of that if you notice a rough edge or two. The rest of February is going to be packed with amazing reveals, including brand-new enemies, crazy new environments, and so much more. We sat down with Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki and picked his brain about what makes his games so appealing to us masochists. And of course, we spent hours going hands-on with a good chunk of the game (Spoilers: we died a lot). So sit back, relax, and prepare for the hunt. View the full article
  2. The PlayStation Now subscription service launched on PS4 last month with more than 100 games, and we’re just getting started. We’ll add games to the service each month, ranging from big blockbuster hits, unique indie games, and everything in between. Perhaps you had a PS3 but missed some of these games, or maybe you never owned a PS3 at all — either way, our PlayStation Now subscription service offers an easy and convenient way to catch up on your backlog. Of course, you can choose from two subscription plans — monthly for $19.99, or a three-month package for $44.99 (about $15 per month). This month you’ll find 5 additional games spanning a range of genres. All of these games will be added to the PlayStation Now subscription library on February 3rd, bringing the total of games you can play with your membership to 109. Also, make sure to check out the weekly PlayStation Store Update post to see the new games available to rent on PlayStation Now. Uncharted 2: Among ThievesFortune hunter Nathan Drake returns in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, a pulse-pounding, third-person adventure created by award-winning developer Naughty Dog. Down on his luck, Drake is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers he had sought to leave behind. When a mysterious artifact propels Drake on an expedition to find the legendary Himalayan valley of Shambhala, he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse against a fugitive war criminal who’s after more than just the fabled riches of the lost city. God of War II HDKratos, the once mortal warrior turned ruthless god, sits atop his throne on Olympus as a threat far worse than his predecessor Ares had ever been, striking down anyone who crosses his path or the path of his beloved Sparta. The “Ghost of Sparta†sets out to alter that which no mortal or god has ever changed. His fate. Red Faction: ArmageddonMars is drowning in chaos. A separatist faction of Marauders intent on wiping out the Martian colonists has destroyed the terraformers and sparked a decade-long war that has rendered the planet’s surface uninhabitable. Forced to rebuild their society underground, the colonists cling to whatever hope for survival they can find. Galaga Legions DXThe legendary hit arcade shooter returns with Galaga Legions DX! Featuring a new twist on the classic gameplay, slick new graphics and devastating weapon power-ups, the fate of the galaxy lies in your hands! Board your fighter and prepare to defend Earth from wave after wave of relentless aliens. Target your enemies’ critical weak spots to earn bonuses and rack-up an astronomical score. Blast your way through unique levels and epic boss battles on your mission to defend the galaxy and prevent an intergalactic catastrophe. Arcana Heart 3In Arcana Heart 3, chaos is erupting in Japan. Planar rifts are appearing in various locations around the country and it is suspected that the Drexler Institute, a player in the Great War many years ago and creator of the Divine Celestial Weapon, is involved. There is a rumor circulating that if one gets their hands on a celestial stone from a rift, their wishes will be granted. Their power draws many young women to search for them, either to seal them away or in hopes that the rumors are true. Each has their own reasons for the hunt, and they won’t allow anyone stand in their way… enemy or friend alike. View the full article

  4. Starting OSome Studio was a pretty frightening adventure in the beginning. I met Domenico Albani and Mathieu Fremont while employed together at Eden Games, where we worked on the fifth instalment of Alone in the Dark. We all went our separate ways after that project finished, picking up experience at other studios, but there was always the feeling of “what if†in the back of our minds. After a few more years of exhausting ourselves on blockbuster titles, the three of us took a step back and realized we each wanted to do something that would let loose our creativities and replenish our passions. OSome Studio was founded to produce original, refreshing games with powerful and immersive environments. We didn’t have much of a budget back then, but we shared a common vision for an original gaming experience and the will to make it a reality. It wouldn’t be a big project, but it would be ours to own. White Night is the product of that dream. Set in Boston in the 1930s, White Night is an old-school survival horror adventure with a distinct black-and-white film noir look that grabs you immediately. We wanted to create something that people would enjoy, but also something that would stand out as unusual and refreshing in today’s survival horror landscape. That meant revisiting the themes that made classic horror games like the original Alone in the Dark so gripping: mature storytelling, strong characters, compelling environments, and equal respect for tension and terror. White Night is a good old ghost story full of mystery, poetry, alchemy, and suspense. And true to classic survival horror fashion, it’s set in a deserted mansion. We worked everywhere — out of our homes, co-working sites, even in bars, partly to save money, but also because we were working as freelancers, and that meant going by a less rigid set of rules. It was a breath of fresh air that helped us get out of that old office development mentality we’d been so used to. We hunted for inspiration wherever we could find it. We listened to jazz music from the era. We drew from the bold look of black-and-white cinema, not only to define White Night’s art style, but to create a chilling game world in which scarce sources of light are the only ways to reveal your surroundings. We even went so far as to rent a real-life mansion in Normandy, where we stowed away for a week to talk about the game, take pictures of the architecture and, most importantly, steep ourselves in the setting. We wanted to get it all right. And White Night definitely reflects those efforts. When we reached out to Frederick Raynal, the author of the first Alone in the Dark, to show him a prototype of the game, we were thrilled to find out he was very enthusiastic about the project. I can’t truly describe how great it was to share tips and advice with someone so central to shaping the genre, but it was an extremely enriching conversation, and we came away more motivated than ever. We showed White Night to press and publishers for the first time at the 2013 Game Connection Europe show in Paris, where it was honored with several awards. The prize included — wait for it — a nifty PS4 development kit, which you can probably gather we put to good use! We sometimes have to pinch ourselves, because seeing our own independent design come to fruition — and seeing people really respond to it — often feels like a dream! Looking back on how far we’ve come, with only a few weeks left before launch, it’s hard to believe where all the time went. White Night, our little pet project that came to life while sharing a bar table, will finally be available for download on March 3rd. We hope you enjoy your stay at the mansion! View the full article
  5. From Kratos to Nathan Drake, Killzone to LittleBigPlanet, and the many other iconic characters and franchises that have delivered greatness in technology, storytelling, and gameplay through the power of the PlayStation for the last 20 years, it’s these incredible, captivating experiences that empower your passion for PlayStation. This is why we partnered with the amazing talent of Ready At Dawn Studios to bring you the next “Big Game†for your PS4, hitting Feb 20th: The Order: 1886. Fittingly, from one Big Game to the biggest of them all this Sunday, Sir Galahad and The Knights of The Order: 1886 will debut a new TV trailer in the build up to kick-off. As one of PlayStation 4’s biggest new exclusives in recent memory, it’s the perfect time for The Order: 1886 to be at the forefront. In development for over 3 years by Ready at Dawn Studios in conjunction with Santa Monica Studio External Development, The Order: 1886 harnesses the power of PS4 to bring you a visceral, cinematic storytelling experience the likes of which you have never seen before on a gaming console. Set deep within a unique vision of Victorian-Era London, you are put directly in the middle of a centuries-old war as Sir Galahad, a member of an elite order of Knights, against a powerful threat that will determine the course of history forever. It’s been a long fantastic, journey bringing The Order: 1886 to PS4, and we are extremely proud to see it showcased before Sunday’s big game. Which begs the question, who will win? Seattle? New England? My pick? Easy…The Order: 1886. If you haven’t already, you can pre-order The Order: 1886 right here. View the full article
  6. When DmC: Devil May Cry launched in January of 2013, Ninja Theory introduced the world to a fresh interpretation of an iconic video game (anti)hero. Half angel, half demon, the Dante of DmC not only fought legions of demon spawn, but the misinformation of an evil corporation. The demon king Mundus took a CEO’s office, not a dark throne. It was a new game world, and Dante kicked its ass. Now the smart-talking Dante fights on in DmC: Definitive Edition, launching March 10th on PS4. It’s an enhanced version of the original PS3 game with a slew of new features and a layer of polish that makes Dante’s demon-killing exploits and confident gunplay even more satisfying. I had a chance to put the Definitive Edition through its paces, and managed to avoid embarrassing myself in the Bloody Palace along the way. Starting with the basics: the Definitive Edition runs at 60 frames per second in crisp 1080p. This propels the fast-paced combat and kinetic environments to new heights, enhancing Dante’s deft swordwork and the ever-shifting realm of Limbo. To fully wring every advantage out of these new performance upgrades, the Definitive Edition also features a Turbo Mode that amps the game speed up 20 percent. If you thought fending off hordes of twisted abominations was both a challenge and a thrill in the original version, just wait. The developers have also included a new difficulty level aptly named “Gods Must Die†in which all enemies have their Devil Triggers active when they spawn. This is the game’s way of saying “good luck, LOL,†and then throwing Dante into a giant hell blender. But what would Devil May Cry be without those over-the-top challenges that keep players coming back for additional punishment? DmC: Definitive Edition also comes equipped with a Hardcore Mode, which adjusts the combat design to feel more like the traditional Devil May Cry games. This means a more rigorous Style ranking system, modified Devil Trigger, and other tweaks to give gamers that worshipped the original series something else to sink their combo-hungry teeth into. Definitive Edition allows for the mixing and matching of these different modes, too, to give players an unprecedented degree of control over how the game plays. If you want to crank the difficulty, turn on Turbo and Hardcore, then bang your head against a wall, you’re welcome to do so. Most of these new additions are also reflected in Vergil’s Downfall, a campaign that follows Dante’s brother after the events of the main story and casts players as the arrogant, samurai-like Nephilim. As a bonus: Ninja Theory built an entire Bloody Palace just for Vergil in this edition, which means a new arena with dozens of enemy waves to train against and dispatch in short order. Even if you already cleared the original DmC, the Definitive Edition gives you a plethora of reasons to go back in with your fists swinging. Good luck with that SSS ranking. View the full article

  8. Just another day in the life of a high school student — wake up, go to school, walk back home, get stabbed in the heart by some demons, become a god… No big deal. If that sounds familiar to you, then you must live quite an exciting life. But for those who haven’t become a god, you can in NIS America’s new PS3 game The Awakened Fate Ultimatum, coming out on March 17th in North America. Guide ordinary high school student Shin Kamikaze (super epic name) as he learns the ropes of being god in The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. While sleeping on the school’s rooftop, Shin has a cryptic dream with a mysterious girl babbling about fate and saving the world, but is suddenly woken up by his friend. Thinking nothing of the weird dream, he heads home, but gets stopped by a group of demons flying down from the sky. One of the demons looks at him, apologizes, and then proceeds to stab him in the chest. As he’s dying, an angel swoops down to fight off the demons and takes him off to a place called Celestia. Awaking to a red-headed scientist named Ariael, he is told that the Awakened Fate crystal has been shoved into his chest to save his life, which has made him a god. Now it’s his job to fight in the war between angels and devils, and determine the fate of the world! This story-based roguelike RPG looks and feels similar to its predecessor, The Guided Fate Paradox. As Shin, you will jump into randomly generated dungeons, battle angels and demons, and collect items to survive each grid-based level. In these dungeons, every move counts. Your enemies will move when you do, so strategizing your approach to each level is key. Just don’t die — when you die, you’ll start from the beginning of the dungeon and lose all the items you were carrying. After fighting through all the levels of a dungeon, you are forced to make “Ultimate Choices†and must live with the consequence of those choices. Depending on the decision, you will be granted either angel or devil Choice Points (aka CP), which are used in the wing-shaped skill tree. In addition to equipping different items, you are able to customize Shin’s permanent stats and special skills by applying CP to either side of the skill tree. Go all angel powers or all devil powers — it’s your choice! The amazing art for this game is done by the one and only Noizi Ito, the artist behind anime like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Shakugan no Shana. Characters are high-resolution 3D sprites, perfect for the ridiculously over-the-top special attack animations. Not only will you see these gorgeous images in the attacks, you’ll get to enjoy them featured in the special scenes throughout the game. While being a god is cool, do you think you can make the ultimate decision? Will you side with the angels, lead the devils, or toe the line? And in the end — when faced with the death of the two girls you’re closest to — who will you save and who will fall? Make your ultimate decision on March 17th. For more information about The Awakened Fate Ultimatum, please visit the official site. View the full article
  9. So in our last post we said that Apotheon would be launching sometime in January. Turns out we were off by a few days. Apotheon will actually be launching on February 3rd, 2015. But, we’ve got a really good excuse! The reason for the short delay is because Apotheon will also be featured as part of Playstation Plus, and will be free for the month of February to all Playstation Plus subscribers for PS4! Check out our new launch trailer showing off a bit of our voice acting talent. While sorting out all the paperwork involved with this deal, we’ve had a bit of extra time to do even more optimizations and playtesting to polish off the last few bugs. With the help of Sickhead Games doing the PS4 version, we’re very happy with how the game has shaped up, and are very excited to finally release it to the world! Back when we first started development in 2012, our original aspirations were much different. Apotheon actually started life as a sci-fi open world game where the player could sneak around a giant space station and cause trouble with lasers and rockets. While trying to flesh out the narrative setting, we starting going in the direction of a sci-fi mythology, with technologically advanced godlike beings pulling the strings behind the curtain. Coming up with a unique mythology was troublesome, so we opted to simply transpose classical Greek mythology into a futuristic setting, with Zeus and friends puppeting hapless mortals from their sub-orbital space colony called Olympus. After doing some more research into the source material, it seemed interesting enough by itself to not even need the tacked on sci-fi elements. From there it was only a hop skip and a jump to get to the Apotheon you see now. Most of what we know about these Myths is told through the earthenware of the time. Pottery that sort of acted like story or comic books, depicting famous characters and heroes of popular legends. It made perfect sense that we adopt this artwork for our game, as it and the narratives they tell go hand in hand. Surprisingly, the art style hasn’t been utilized as much as would be expected, considering the influence of the Myths themselves in popular media. Aside from a few cinematics or flavourful intro sequences, not many games have made use of it at all. The black and red figure art of Greek pottery is almost the perfect art style for a 2D game. It is bold and instantly readable, with heavy use of symbols, ideal for conveying information to the player. It is flat and uses many patterns, perfect for efficient texture tiling for environments and levels. And most importantly, it is linked with some of the most interesting narratives in human history! And with that bit of our own history about Apotheon, we’ve got a few more days of hard work until we set it loose it upon the world on February 3rd! See you all on launch day! View the full article
  10. Hi everyone, Jmax from DONTNOD here, and I’m delighted to share the launch trailer for Life is Strange, which is out tomorrow on PS4 and PS3! We are all thrilled at the idea that players are finally getting their hands on our new game. It’s been an intense and sometimes challenging journey, but it was definitely worth it. And, well, it’s far from over, as the team here is very hard at work on parts 2 through 5, ensuring they get released at timely intervals so you always know when the next one is going to drop. The first episode that you’ll play is called Chrysalis, and it’s basically an introduction to the world of Life is Strange. You’ll see Max and Chloe reunite and you’ll make important choices that will influence their destiny. You will see some of the short-term consequences of those choices but bear in mind that there are also mid and long-term repercussions that will pan out over the course of the later episodes, in a butterfly effect manner. So you might rewind your choices as much as you want in the short term but you will never know what might happen further down the line. And of course we’ll ensure that you always get surprised by unexpected turns of events and that your experience really feels unique and customized by your choices. This first episode is also an introduction to the general mechanics of the game, and although Life is Strange emphasizes story and choice over puzzles, you will also see an evolution over the next episodes in terms of how you need to combine different types of interactions and rewinds. A trial is also coming to PS4 and PS3 so you can get a feel for the game before you make your first meaningful choice: to buy or not to buy! So that’s it, I hope you like the trailer and the first episode, and we already can’t wait to bring you parts 2 through 5! Enjoy. View the full article

  13. Get ready for a dream duel of epic proportions! Here at Sega, we are beyond thrilled to announce that Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is coming to the West exclusively for PS3 and Vita. Thanks to all our fans for supporting efforts to bring Japanese content like Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax over from Japan. We’re excited to reveal more about the game as we get closer to launch! Developed by Ecole and French Bread in cooperation with ASCII Media Works, this 2D fighting game celebrates the 20th anniversary of Dengeki Bunko with an all-star cast of their popular characters set against Sega-themed worlds. With playable characters such as Asuna from Sword Art Online or Kuroyukihime from Accel World, and support characters like Touma Kamijou from A Certain Magical Index or Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax makes the most unlikely of character matchups a reality. Fighting Climax features a fighting system that is both easily understood and complex, thus catering to veterans and newcomers alike. Using weak, medium and strong attacks, each of the playable characters have move sets that are similar in execution, yet differ in attack range, power and speed. Assist characters each have two moves that can either help you chain your combos or add a defensive strike, giving players a large range of flexibility in custom combo creation and play style. Speaking of characters, Akira Yuki from Virtua Fighter and Selvaria Bles from Valkyria Chronicles join the battle as unlockable characters in Versus and Online multiplayer modes, along with their support character counterparts Pai Chan and Alicia Melchiott. In addition to an original story campaign in Arcade mode where characters are summoned to overthrow the evil Zetsumu, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax features over 60 new vignettes in its Dream Duel mode. Exclusive to the console launch, these original cutscenes are penned under the supervision of Dengeki Bunko’s writers and add further depth to the interactions of this fantasy crossover of characters. But the fan service doesn’t stop there! All of the stages have been designed after some of Sega’s most iconic series, so prepare to go faster in the nostalgic stage themed after Sonic the Hedgehog or declare war against your opponent amongst the Gallian and Imperial tanks of Valkyria Chronicles. Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax will be available exclusive to PS3 and PS Vita in Summer 2015, both digitally and at retail. View the full article
  14. Hi everyone! This is Teemu from Frogmind. I hope everyones’ 2015 is off to an awesome start. I’m excited to be able to reach out to you and tell you about our plans to bring our award-winning action adventure game, Badland, to PS4, PS3, and PS Vita this spring with Badland: Game of the Year Edition. Badland was initially released in 2013 on tablet. It got a brilliant reception and has won numerous awards. Most important of all, it has been received heart-warmingly well by the gamers who play it. Our original goal in making Badland was to create a console quality game for tablets. Back then we were a team of two with too few resources to enter the console market. But we hoped to bring Badland here. Luckily, it did well and we can finally make this dream a reality. We’ve also got many requests for a PlayStation version from our fans. It’s great to finally be able to say that it’s coming soon. Badland is a unique mix of innovative physics-based gameplay, creative level design, power-ups — from cloning to growing to slowing down time — and stunning, atmospheric graphics and audio. It’s set in a beautiful forest with an ominous undertone. You control a flying creature, Clony, to find out what’s going on, and discover an astonishing number of imaginative traps, puzzles, and obstacles on the way. We wanted the game to be perfect on PlayStation platforms. The PS version builds on the atmospheric, hand-painted graphics of the original with enhanced, full-HD visuals. We put a lot of focus on delivering the best possible gameplay. The controls have been expanded for the analog stick and triggers and feel very natural. You can now fly backwards and control the speed of your flying, which was a change that required us to carefully modify all levels of the game to accommodate. Badland: Game of Year Edition features four times more content than the original did at launch. It has 100 single-player levels that take around 15 hours to complete. And it has another 100 co-op and 27 multiplayer deathmatch stages in an awesome up-to-four-person local multiplayer mode. The PlayStation versions have Trophies, as well as cross buy and cross save functionality. So not only can you continue your progress on your Vita after playing on your PS4, but you also need to pay only once to get it for them. Badland will launch this spring. We’ll be back on PlayStation.Blog to talk more about the game and reveal the exact launch date. So, if you’re into beautiful, atmospheric action adventures, or just want to try something unique, keep an eye out for this! I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions in the comments below! 17. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. And what a glorious morning it is! You know why? Because Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation comes out today, exclusively for PS Vita! For those who haven’t played a Hyperdimension Neptunia title before, it takes place in a world fittingly called Gamindustri, where four Goddesses — each representing a certain game console — battle for control of the land (while breaking the fourth wall at every opportune moment). In Re;Birth2, however, these Goddesses have been banished to an underworld by the piracy-loving Arfoire Syndicate and now it’s up to their younger sisters to save the Goddesses and save the day. A remake of the PS3 title Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, this game comes packed to the gills with new characters, new story, and new gameplay! You’ll encounter enemies like Super Otaku, living Tetris-like blocks, and screenshots of visual novels in battles that combine action RPG and turn-based RPG elements. Cut them down with 8 characters in battle — 4 on the main line, and 4 others that can jump in with support attacks or that can be swapped in at any time. Throw in the Lily Rank system that builds up links between characters to enable devastating duo attacks, main characters that can transform into super-powerful Goddess forms, and a roster of 20-something playable characters, and it makes for an infinite* amount of battle combinations to take down your enemies! Not only can you customize your battle setup, you can customize the world of Gamindustri itself! Want more enemies in a dungeon? Different items? More difficulty? Pick up the right Plan by talking to NPCs and you can implement them in the world of Gamindustri! You’ll want to talk to the NPCs anyway, since they are rife with gaming and otaku allusions. On top of that, you can also craft unique, ability-granting equipment using Blank Discs to max out your party’s powers! If all that wasn’t enough, you’ll also get the Stella’s Dungeon side-game, where you equip the helpful Stella with gear and send her off on a quest to find you extra items. Her quests run in the background while the Vita’s on, so you can go make yourself a sandwich and come back to some great loot. Watch out, though, because she’s in what appears to be a roguelike, so if she dies in her dungeon, she’ll lose all her equipment! As the internet might say, one does not simply enter Stella’s Dungeon. Whew, there’s still a ton of more stuff to cover, but I’m worn out! Suffice to say that Re;Birth2 comes loaded with a bunch of content that newcomers and veterans of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series can both appreciate. With all these character combos, subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the gaming world, and loads of customization, there’s no way you won’t have a blast in the world of Gamindustri, so get in there and break the fourth wall! *I’m not good at math. 18. We previously introduced Necrosoft Games‘ Gunsport to you back in April — it’s a cyberpunk volleyball with guns-style eSport for the PS4, coming in late 2015. After a successful showing at the PlayStation Experience, we’d like to finally reveal to you our first teaser trailer. In it, you’ll get a glimpse into the world of Gunsport – a world without war. In the alternate future of Gunsport, humanity has lost its taste for war, and regional pride now takes the form of sport and performance, much like football or soccer does in America and Europe. But each region, many of which were newly formed after the fall of war, has achieved its new found peace in a unique way. Today we will tell you about one of those: Neo Tokyo. Neo Tokyo reflects a Japan that is consumed by technology, much like you see in the real Tokyo of today. But Neo Tokyo also marries this with another real Tokyo trend – the desire by some to return to a time of master craftsmanship, strong national identity, and creation. This is why the Neo Tokyo you’ll see in Gunsport appears to be so analog focused – with neon signs, personally crafted automobiles, and buildings that are allowed to wear down and show their character, without losing their functionality. Everything in Neo Tokyo was hand crafted to bring out its unique flavor. Neo Tokyo also values a strong sense of group identity, which you’ll find in our characters, which we’ll be introducing at a later date. The current Neo Tokyo characters you see in the trailer, on the right side of the screen, are… shall we say apprentices in the game of Gunsport. Where you might consider these players to be initiates, or street punks, our final characters are masters, sponsored by the Yakuza for their prowess and what they represent to the national identity. That doesn’t mean they always go along with what others say, though. The future of GunsportIn this trailer you’ll also catch a few seconds of the Blue Cambodia background, as well as our team from the People’s Republic of Oakland (on the left), which is a new city-state in the US. There will be more stages and characters revealed as we move forward – we are trying to make this a very international game, as we are a very international team. No two people at Necrosoft even live in the same country! What we’re showing you here in this trailer is our prototype – since its creation we have been working hard to revamp and update all our backgrounds, characters, and we hope you’ll like what we have in store. The game is tough, it’s hard, it’s fast, and since each team has its own stage, its own weapon set, and its own personality, we think it will provide a fair amount of variety. Please feel free to follow our progress as we work on Gunsport via @NecrosoftGames on Twitter. We hope you like the trailer, and may all your shots be true! View the full article
  19. Hey everyone – this is Tom Happ, the sole developer of Axiom Verge. I did all of the art, music, design, animation, and programming as a labor of love. After 5 years of working on Axiom Verge in isolation, I’m finally getting close to launch. I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve been able to make as a team of 1, but the ultimate judges will be you, the players. One of the newest features I added was a Speedrun Mode. For years I’ve loved watching ridiculously skilled players 100%-ing great games like Super Metroid, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee, and more. The recent AGDQ festival also made me think deeply about creating features specifically for the speedrunning community. To understand how Speedrun Mode works, it’s important to understand a little about Axiom Verge. In Axiom Verge, you play as Trace, a scientist who wakes up after a lab accident in a strange, alien world. Similar to classic games like Super Metroid, Master Blaster, Bionic Commando, and Contra, the game involves a mix of exploration, new weapons and powerups, new enemies to battle and epic boss fights. As you make your way through the world, you also encounter a number of secret areas that are randomly generated each game – both the location of these secret areas and the actual layout are procedurally generated so no two playthroughs will be entirely the same. In addition, some creatures in the world behave erratically and randomly. When people play normally, a big part of the fun of the game comes from exploration and discovering all of the secrets. Speedrunners, though, want to know that everything is where it’s supposed to be. It’s important that random elements are minimized so that every playthrough is comparing apples-to-apples. Originally, I considered just making the game the same for everyone on every playthrough, but I decided that that would take away some of the challenge and replayability. So instead I created a separate mode for speedrunners where all of the random elements are based off of the same seed number every time you play. So when you’re playing through in speedrun mode, every enemy is in its place, and there are no secret areas to serve as a distraction from the main game. Click here for more screens Another feature that is important for speedrunners is being able to bypass dialog quickly. For regular players, there is an interesting storyline that falls into place as Trace makes his way through the alien world. Not everything is always as it seems, and I don’t want to spoil anything beyond that. But speedrunners will have seen all of that already. They don’t want to keep tapping the X button repeatedly just to skip past the dialog – they just want to keep going, so I’ve set it up so Speedrun Mode works that way. The ability for speedrunners to track how they’re doing at certain points in the game is also really important. Fortunately, the boss fights serve well as landmarks along the way. So in addition to having a timer (which is based on elapsed frames rather than real time in case there are subtle differences between the speed at which the game runs) always going in the upper-left hand side of the screen, players will also be able to see how long it took them to reach each of these milestones. For players who don’t necessarily want to compete with the best of the best to squeeze out as much time as possible, this feature also lets people set more modest goals for themselves. Try to beat your time to reach and defeat the first boss, the second boss, and so on. Last but not least is Playstation Share. I cannot wait to watch players streaming their runs on Twitch and ultimately having them displayed on sites like speedrunslive.com or speeddemosarchive.com. Speedrun Mode is just one of the features I’m adding to Axiom Verge to make it the ideal game for diehard fans of the genre. Axiom Verge has been a passion project of mine for a really long time, so it will be very exciting to experience it with people who share my love for those classic games. If you’d like to stay up-to-date on the latest info on the game, please follow me on Twitter at @AxiomVerge and sign up for my newsletter on the Axiom Verge website! View the full article
  20. The developers of the open-ended RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt describe their bold creation as a “morally indifferent†fantasy world, but it’s difficult to illustrate the true breadth of that claim. The world of The Witcher 3 is violent, desperate, dark, beautiful, and palpably old. It teems with quests and hidden dangers, alongside gritty heroes and the wrongdoers to match them. Playing Wild Hunt on PS4 for the first time, its world came to life in unexpected ways, but delivered a consistently rewarding introduction to a rich tale. Those new to the Witcher series need not slink away, overwhelmed — The Witcher 3 is designed with you in mind. It begins with a prologue that deftly establishes the important characters and the stakes of the conflict around them. You play as a slayer of monsters — a Witcher — one in a long line of highly-trained, mutated beings that seek out and destroy threats against humanity. This background has gifted (or cursed) hero Geralt of Rivia with an unnaturally long life, and a set of skills suitable for his profession. At the onset of The Witcher 3’s story, Geralt and his old master Vesemir are tracking a mutual friend (and in Geralt’s case, former lover) named Yennefer of Vengerberg. This raven-haired sorceress sent a cryptic letter to the pair and little else, leaving Geralt and Vesemir to track her down on horseback. This scene quickly reveals the open world, which feels almost impossibly alive as Geralt and his mentor ride down dirt paths and weave through rich forests in search of clues. Peasants tend to their work, children dash through villages, and birds take flight from rustled trees. The attention to detail is admirable, and that extends into Wild Hunt’s combat system. Danger lurks in all corners of the world, and comes in forms both human and otherwise. At the start of Wild Hunt, Geralt is armed with swords of steel and silver — best used to dispatch men and monsters, respectively. When in combat, Geralt can unleash light and heavy strikes, dodge in any direction, and parry incoming attacks. A perfect parry will result in a riposte (counter), giving Geralt a temporary edge over his opponent. But Witchers have much more than blades to their name. Geralt’s order has a basic understanding of magic (simple gestures called “Signsâ€) and alchemy, both of which have a tremendous impact on combat. At first, Geralt has access to five Signs that can serve both offensive and defensive purposes. Quen, for example, forms a protective shield around its caster that can absorb one attack. Igni, on the other hand, casts a spray of fire before the Witcher in a glorious display of smoke and embers. Geralt can also utilize a variety of potions and bombs to complement his swordplay. But keep in mind that reaping the benefits of alchemy requires ingredients, which can be scavenged from the world or purchased at one of many shops or inns. The PS4 version of Wild Hunt looks gorgeous, whether Geralt is spurring his horse Roach through sweeping fields or just relaxing at the pub. The characters — including minor roles — are expertly written and acted, which bolsters an already impressive feeling of authenticity in the game world. In fact, some of The Witcher 3’s best moments come from random conversations between Geralt and the villagers, which give players several dialogue options for a branching narrative. The team at CD Projekt Red has created something quite remarkable with The Witcher 3; a fitting endeavor, given the quality of the previous two adventures and the legacy that Wild Hunt will follow on May 19th. 24. Hi! Our names are Uli Wanitschke, Game Director for Silence, and Marco Hüllen, Lead Designer of the game. Together with a team of approximately 20 highly talented developers, we’re making Marco’s concept for Silence: The Whispered World 2 become a reality. We’re all huge adventure game fans here at Daedalic Entertainment. We grew up with the likes of Monkey Island, and we all feel that the genre is alive and well. However, we also believe there’s a lot of room for modernization within the genre, while at the same time not abandoning its roots. What springs to mind first is Silence’s visual style. At Daedalic, we have an incredible art department, drawing beautiful backgrounds, locations etc. We used to show these in 2D games. For Silence, however, we now use 3D technology, by following a method we call “camera projection.†We place 3D objects and 3D characters in 3D environments, but then project 2D art on everything. Marco calls this ‘three-dimensional artwork’ when creating all these magnificent backgrounds. This procedure allows us to maintain the high detail level of our hand-drawn art, while still being able to use the benefits of 3D game design. Puzzle design for us is the biggest part of the game that will see a significant makeover to how we usually expect games in this genre to be. We have designed puzzles in a way that makes them part of the story experience. Puzzles are supposed to never keep players in Silence from moving forward within the story. They’re designed in a way to let them be solved intuitively while also being part of the current on-screen experience. So, players are supposed to explore the environment around them, listen to dialogue, talk to other characters and observe what’s happening around them — just as they’re used to in adventure games or RPGs. The puzzle solutions are always kept on a logical, comprehensible level, and stay within the current area. This also means that we won’t be needing an inventory. Players can focus on one puzzle at a time, and one item at a time. Thus, we’re eliminating puzzles for which you have to try a huge number of item combinations to find the answer, for example. Silence will feature two playable characters — Noah and Renie — as well as an important sidekick named Spot. Noah and Renie will both come with different abilities, which players need to consider in order to solve puzzles. Noah is a tall, 16-year old boy. So he’ll be much stronger, for example, than his younger sister Renie, who is only six years of age. Renie won’t be able to tell left from right yet, however, she’ll be much more curious and thus fearless than her brother. That can be a good thing in a game! Spot will be accompanying both characters. When players switch freely between Noah and Renie, Spot will run over to the chosen character as well. He’ll be able to shift his shape into all kinds of things, and thus can be used just like a Swiss army knife to be the piece that was missing to solve a puzzle. Besides, he can explore his environment on his own, and will mostly come up with a very individual reaction, even depending on the current shape he’s exploring the world in. This way, he’ll shed additional light on things — and cause some cute moments. Now what’s this all for? Well, the game will take you to a fantasy world — Silence, or sometimes also called The Whispered World — from which Noah and Renie will have to escape. Noah has been to this world once before, but he didn’t know it still existed. He knows that it’s a beautiful place only on first sight. What he doesn’t know yet, though, is that Silence has turned into a more hostile place since he visited it last. It will be Noah’s task to save Renie from this place — and to find out how and why the Whispered World has managed to endure. View the full article
  25. Hello from all of the DONTNOD development team. We’re still hard at work at the studio but would like to share the second Life is Strange Dev Diary for you to see more of the game we’ve been creating here in Paris. This second video from the three part series is called The Butterfly Effect, and it explains everything you need to know about Max’s ability to rewind time — including how the concept originated and exactly how rewinding time in Life is Strange works. If you want to ask us any questions about the game we’re hosting a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, January 27th at 6:00am Pacific / 2:00pm UK time. Hope to see you there! Thanks for all the support and kind comments so far. The first episode is being released in just 7 days and counting, the wait for Life is Strange is almost over and we can’t wait to hear what you think. View the full article
