  1. Christmas may be over, but the gaming fun has just begun. For those of you who got a PS Vita from Santa, or as a gift to yourself — congrats! I’ve collected some handy tips and tricks for you to get the most out of your new Vita. Longtime PS Vita owners, feel free to chime in and let us know your favorite tips & tricks in the comments section. Remote Play with PS4Remote Play is one of my favorite features of PS Vita. This feature lets you steam your PS4 games from your PS4 system over Wi-Fi to your PS Vita. So if the living room TV is tied up, just use Remote Play to send your PS4 game to your Vita and continue playing. For instructions on how to link your PS4 to your PS Vita for Remote Play, click here. PlayStation NowOur game streaming service that uses cloud-based technology, PS Now, launched in open beta on PS Vita just a few months ago. Through PS Now, you can play hit PS3 games like God of War: Ascension and inFAMOUS on a portable system — how cool is that? To get started, download the PlayStation Now Open Beta App from PlayStation Store. Quick Settings MenuPS Vita’s Quick Settings menu lets you easily change settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, music, brightness, chat audio and microphone, even while you’re in the middle of your gameplay. Just hold the PS home for a few seconds and the quick setting menu will pop up. Personalize Your PS Vita BackgroundCustomize your PS Vita with themes from PlayStation Store, or upload photos taken from PS Vita’s camera in the Themes & Background menu under Settings. Some cool themes currently available free on PlayStation Store include Uncharted Golden Abyss and PlayStation’s 20th Anniversary theme. Take a ScreenshotJust like PS4, you can snap a screenshot of your game on PS Vita. To take a screenshot, press the PS button and the START button at the same time. You can view the captured screenshots in (Photos), and attach them to tweets using Vita’s LiveTweet application. Organize Your Apps with FoldersGot a lot of apps on your home screen? You can quickly create folders to organize your games and apps. Just hold down on the icon, select Create Folder, name it, and start dragging other similar apps/games to the folder you’ve just created. Calendar AppUse the calendar application to set up gaming events with your friends. You can also sync your Google calendar to have all your events with you on your PS Vita. The app also makes it easy to share your favorite events by using the Messages and Email applications. PlayStation PlusGet access to a rotating list of free games from the Instant Game Collection, 1GB of cloud storage for game saves, deep discounts off select content, and more with PS Plus. For December, Final Horizon and Titan Attacks! are currently free for PS Plus members via the Instant Game Collection. Also, one PS Plus membership works across PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. 2. Good things coming from the oven! A minute more, or maybe two. Made with art and code and lovin’ From Double Fine to all of you! 2014 was one heck of a year! From launching a bunch of new games into the wild to taking on our own indie publishing initiative, you can call us ambitious… or crazy, maybe both?! In addition to a bunch of PC releases and another round of our Amnesia Fortnight game jam (this time with Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward), we also had a bunch of fun stuff go down for PlayStation fans! Halloween RPG sequel Costume Quest 2 came out this October on PS4 and PS3! We also became midwives to a handful of amazing indie titles under our publishing initiative Double Fine Presents, including Escape Goat 2 from Magical Time Bean which is now available on PS4. And PlayStation Experience also saw the announce of another DF Presents title coming to PS4, Boneloaf’s Gang Beasts! Mazel Tov! Next year is looking to be an exciting one for the PlayStation Nation with Double Fine games Grim Fandango Remastered, Broken Age — The Complete Adventure, and Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition all slated for launch on PS4 and PS Vita in 2015. We’re super pumped about it and we hope you are too! We wish you all the warmth and tenderness this holiday season! Merry Chrismahanukwanzakah! View the full article
  3. What a year for us. Not everyone knows this, but at Switchblade Monkeys we’re a tiny group of friends — our game started as a passion project. Secret Ponchos just launched earlier this month, and we felt so proud to see it on PS4 (with players able to grab it for free on PS Plus!). 2015 is going to be an important year for us; we learned so much from community feedback, and we already have a big wishlist of improvements and enhancements! We’re going to be there working with the PS4 community to grow and expand Secret Ponchos, and see how far we can take this title. Thank you so much for your support in 2014, and we’re excited to see what we can do in 2015 to keep pushing the game. Happy Holidays from the Switchblade Monkeys! View the full article
  4. Hello PlayStation Blog, I’m Sean Murray, I’m a programmer working on No Man’s Sky with a group of friends, here at Hello Games. We’ve just come back from Vegas, where the whole team went to Playstation Experience, The Game Awards (and then the Grand Canyon for biome research). This has been a very different kind of year for us. This time last year I was worried that no one would watch our reveal trailer, and now I just worry if we can live up to some people’s excitement. So many people have been so lovely and supportive. Personally I’m going to disappear in 2015, probably until the game is out. I just want to focus on programming, which I definitely prefer to talking to press, which I’ve done a lot this month. If you want to know more about the game, there’s lots of new No Man’s Sky videos to watch. We showed No Man’s Sky off at The Game Awards. Then we showed at PlayStation Experience, and finally we threw a concert with the band 65daysofstatic, who will be doing our soundtrack. Also this month we are on the cover of Game Informer, which was a huge moment for me (it’s a first for an indie game). They are doing lots of video features, and people say the quickfire question one is good. I haven’t actually watched any of these, but I saw some animated gifs of my face whilst browsing NeoGAF, so that was enough for me. Hopefully the vids are ok. It’s been an incredible year. We’re going to focus on finishing No Man’s Sky, but I want you to know how much we’ve valued each message you’ve sent us. Thank you. It means a lot to me and the team. Have a super happy Christmas and New Year. Here’s to 2015, the year No Man’s Sky comes out. Love you guys, Sean View the full article
  5. Our last showing at PlayStation Experience was amazing, and a great opportunity to meet some of you. First and foremost, we wanted to thank you for all your support. It’s only a couple of months until the launch of our game and we’re really looking forward to having everyone play The Order: 1886. Tis the season to give, so don’t forget, our 1886 Countdown Sweepstakes has started. As a reminder, we will be awarding prizes every 18 hours, 8 minutes, and 6 seconds, from now until the launch of The Order: 1886 on February 20th, 2015. Finally, with Christmas and the New Year upon us, we wanted to send everyone our best wishes and leave you with a little something special from 1886. Happy Holidays! View the full article

  7. Happy Holidays, PlayStation.Blog readers! The Kingdom Hearts team would like to wish you a very merry holiday to you and your loved ones. The launch of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX on December 2nd has brought together countless people and the #feels have spread in good spirits. The magical saga continues in three remastered journeys… and each individual’s journey with the Kingdom Hearts franchise has been quite unique. For those who have seen the Kingdom Hearts launch trailer, you saw fans across the globe expressing their love and passion to the creators of Kingdom Hearts. To shoot the trailer in North America, 293 people came out to voice their experience with the game. In EU it was a very special few dozen of fans from England, France, Germany and Spain, and in Japan I counted at least 50 smiling faces of the development team. Working with the North America team, I’ve never had the chance to actually meet all the artists, programmers, character creators, storywriters, producers, and art-directors that have been working on Kingdom Hearts since its birth 14 years ago. Let alone, I’ve never really had full conversations with a group of savvy Kingdom Hearts fans at once! Thanks to our very sweet counterpart in Japan, we were successfully able to coordinate a surprise reaction video shoot with Japan. The US and EU team eagerly anticipated to see the faces behind the creativity and work that goes into our games. Oh boy… it was extremely hard to cut the developer reaction from hours into literally one minute. Developer reactions stating that they felt “love from around the world” were no surprise and some of the comments they had about the “cool style” of our fans were super sweet. What we didn’t get to add into the trailer was that the Japan staff initially thought that all of the fans were actors! Everyone’s “labor of love” really made a piece that just cannot be scripted. Thank you Kingdom Hearts fans for embracing your voice and experiences through life. We found through getting to know you that we all have overcome so many obstacles in life. The way you cheer each other on and support fellow Kingdom Hearts fans is such a special gift. In closing, as this very special game brought all of us together please remember… no matter where we go, we will always be connected. View the full article
  8. It’s that holly jolly season to spend time with your loved ones, dust off your Christmas tree lights, and reflect on all the great moments you’ve had in the past year — especially your greatest gaming moments! Here in our Bandai Namco Games America office, we’ve experienced some great highs this year, like finally beating a boss in Dark Souls II with co-workers cheering us on, as well as some face palming lows, like accidentally rolling off a cliff in Dark Souls II… with co-workers watching. Nonetheless, 2014 has been a great year. Since the beginning we have prided ourselves on bringing well-loved anime franchises to video games in the West, and 2014 was no exception. Kicking off the year, we launched Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z and One Piece: Romance Dawn and kept the anime train rolling throughout the year with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn for our anime fans. Speaking of fans, something needs to be said about our “Tales of” fans. The immense support and devotion we receive from our “Tales of” fans has spurred and motivated the Bandai Namco team to localize more and more Tales of games and prove that classic JRPGs are as strong as ever! Just in 2014, we were able to bring over Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Tales of Xillia 2, and Tales of Hearts R and the reception for each one was fabulous! However, the biggest highlight from 2014 that all of us at Bandai Namco Games America would agree on would be the much anticipated and celebrated launch of Dark Souls II. The Bandai Namco elves worked long hours and late into the nights, even during the 2013 holiday season, and boy did all that hard work pay off! With over 400 million in-game deaths worldwide from the game’s launch until now, we believe it’s safe to say that Dark Souls II is the most challenging and punishing, yet gloriously rewarding, action RPG experience that has come out of the Bandai Namco Games lineup to date. With 2015 creeping up fast, we fully intend to keep the 2014 momentum going and hope everybody is looking forward to another fantastic year of epic battles, nail-biting victories, and pwning noobs! But for now, have a wonderful holiday season and happy New Year! -From the Bandai Namco Games America crew View the full article
  9. A joyous “Season’s Greetings” from the entire ATLUS Crew! As 2015 (with massive emphasis on the “5” in 2015) approaches, we wanted to sit back, kick up a nice glass of nog, and reflect on the PlayStation-tastic year we had this year. Some of you have been accustomed to your PlayStation devices being home for your Persona (or depending on the generation, Shin Megami Tensei) games, but 2014 was a banner year for ATLUS’ indie titles. We started things off with the first-person procedural horror title Daylight from Zombie Studios, we released ACE Team’s Abyss Odyssey, the 2D platformer with a heavy dose of fighting game mechanics in it, Rollers of the Realm, and the Pinball RPG mashup from Phantom Compass. Not to mention the baby-making PS Vita dungeon crawler Conception II and the elephant-riding, turn-based strategy RPG for the PS3, Tears to Tiara II, but I guess Spike Chunsoft nor Aquaplus count as an Indie studios, now do they? For all the tournament fighters, tournament hopefuls, and button mashers (Like myself!), we released Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the sequel to our award-winning fighting game on PS3 in September — there was an impressive final at the NorthEast Championship (NEC) fighting tourney last month. Hopefully you’ve had some equally tense, nerve-wracking fights in the online lobbies. Keep an eye out on P4AU on the long road to EVO! But while 2014 was a great year for ATLUS and PlayStation, 2015 is going to be even bigger! Right out of the gate, we’ll have Citizens of Earth, the indie-developed RPG from Eden Industries. Players will guide the Vice President of the World in this western take on a retro-inspired JRPG, chock full of colorful characters to recruit to your party and then force to do your dirty work. Why? Because when you’re the VP of the world, you don’t fight, you delegate. It’s coming to both PS4 and PS Vita, because we can. But seriously, this game will scratch that JRPG itch if you’ve been needing something to occupy your time. Then of course, we can’t forget the two titles ATLUS has shrouded behind the veil of mystery — Persona 4: Dancing All Night and Persona 5. We don’t have much news other than they’re coming in 2015, but rest assured that when we do, you’ll read about it on PlayStation.Blog! We may have a few other PlayStation titles to announce along the way, but for now, keep your eye out for Citizens and more news about the upcoming Persona titles. So as we all kick back and relax with a cup of spiked completely normal eggnog and enjoy playing a metric buttload of video games over the holiday break, please take the warm tidings and thanks we give to all of you for being ATLUS fans! 12. Happy holidays, everyone! 2014 was a big year for us. We turned thirty years old, launched The Last of Us Remastered to widespread acclaim, opened a shop, had a couple art shows, and revealed gameplay from our next project, just to name some highlights. To celebrate the season, here’s our studio holiday card for this year. Pretty fantastic, huh? This sweater, designed by our very own Alexandria Neonakis, will be available in physical form at some point in the near future. It might be perfect for a Christmas in July situation or perhaps a holiday 2015 addition to our ND Shop. Let us know if you’d buy one in the comments and we’ll see when we can make it appear on the shop. December has been a joyous month for us as we revealed fifteen minutes of gameplay from our next project, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and talked about re- at the first ever PlayStation Experience. This reveal was truly the icing on our thirty year cake.As a special holiday treat we’re making our full length 30th anniversary video, which we screened for the first time at PlayStation Experience, available for free. Watch it now: While we had many cool things happen when we turned thirty, we have much more to share with you. First off, we’ll be rolling out a timeline of our history in the coming months. Additionally, we have some cool surprises with Penny Arcade coming that will expand our Pinny collection with them. Obviously, we’ll be talking more about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End over the next year as well. Thirty was pretty great, but thirty-one is going to be even better. Get ready for an incredible 2015! 13. H-O-L-I-D-A-Y time is here! …And nothing really changes at DrinkBox Studios because we’re still hard at work. Luckily though, I do have the privilege to give you a little recap of how we’re sending out the year. Severed We just got back from showing Severed publicly for the first time at PlayStation Experience, which was amazing for a bunch of reasons. First, there was a real excitement in the air from all the gamers walking around at the inaugural event. Second, we got to chat with fans of Guacamelee!, who were nice enough to come up and say positive things about our game. I can’t tell you how great this makes us feel. Thirdly, we were able to let people play Severed for the first time, allowing us to get valuable feedback, and hopefully leaving everyone with a good impression or two. People seemed really excited, which, in turn, pumped us up a lot. Guacamelee! STCE 4 Player But hold on, that’s not all! As a special treat for PlayStation Experience, we added four-player support to Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition. WHAT?! That’s right, Guacamelee! STCE 4-player. And if you’re wondering if it’s as hectic and crazy as it sounds, the answer is 100% yes. We’re hoping to release a four-player patch sometime in the new year. Guacamelee! PSTV Not done! Since I’m sure all of you will be getting a PlayStation TV as a gift (from yourself) pretty soon, we figured you might want to play co-op with the original Guacamelee!. What?! That is correct. Our free update to Guacamelee! Vita is now live, making the game fully compatible with PS TV and adding two-player support on it as well. What this means to you: if you own Guacamelee! on PS3 or PS Vita, and have a PlayStation TV, then you can play Guacamelee! for free. With all of this said — everyone over here at DrinkBox Studios would like to send out a very warm happy holidays to everyone out there who have supported us in any way. DrinkBox Studios would not exist if it wasn’t for your support — we never forget this. Happy New Year! View the full article
  14. Happy Holidays, everyone! This is Hajime Tabata, Director of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and Final Fantasy XV. I won’t take up too much of your time as you prepare for your holiday festivities, but I did want to share our holiday card with you today that truly encapsulates my feelings about Final Fantasy Type-0 HD in a single sentence. We launched the original Final Fantasy Type-0 on PSP back in 2011 in Japan, and due to the market conditions and many other factors, the Western release of the title simply wasn’t feasible at the time, as much as we tried. But thanks to you and your perseverance in letting us know that you wanted to play it, here we are in 2014 nearing the release of the HD version. In this case, it is you who made the fantasy become fact. In Japan around this time every year, we have a large festival (much like the conventions you attend in the West) called JumpFesta. We’ve debuted two new trailers for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and Final Fantasy XV. With JumpFesta behind us, I’m personally looking forward to 2015 very much, with a visit to the US in January, where I’ll be joining you for a Reddit AMA on 1/23/15 at 10:00AM Pacific. Please bring your questions about Final Fantasy Type-0 HD for me! And after that, it’s only two short months before the launch of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it, so please remember what made this game possible in the first place — you! Have a safe and happy New Year, everyone! -Hajime Tabata View the full article
  15. Hey, PlayStation Nation. It’s been a crazy year at Bungie. Not only did we launch a new game, but we saw a brand new community rally around it. We’ve had an amazing time welcoming you to the Tower, and fighting alongside you in public events. Even better, we got to meet some of you in real life – at E3, gamescom, or even the very first PlayStation Experience. With the holiday season upon us, we’re grateful for the past year that we’ve shared. As Guardians, you’ve made Destiny better than it could have been without you. As players, you’ve given us the feedback we need to make the game even better. That conversation will continue into the new year and beyond. There’s a lot more to look forward to, and we’re thrilled that you’re a part of that process. Over on Bungie.net, we’re taking a final look back at the first 100 days of Destiny. Check it out. More than the statistics, it’s the memories that we value the most. We have some gifts in store for each of you – a small token of our appreciation. See the End-of-Year Update for details. Thanks for playing. See you next year. DeeJ_BNG View the full article
  16. Hello aspiring projection clones! I’m John Davis, a community manager here at Q-Games. As you might know, we recently finished the closed alpha test for our upcoming PS4 exclusive, The Tomorrow Children. The alpha was amazing and gave players a great sneak peek at what we we’re working on, plus it was a chance to get lots of data on exactly what players will be doing in the Void once The Tomorrow Children arrives on PS4 next year. We had a great time playing with everyone and it was incredibly informative on top of that. The best of both worlds! For the vast majority of people who didn’t get into the alpha, there’s been a lot of questions about exactly what The Tomorrow Children is, and we can understand that. If you’ve been keeping up with our posts here on PlayStation.Blog, you know that The Tomorrow Children takes place in a dystopian future where a Cold War experiment to meld the minds of all of humanity resulted in the near extinction of the human race. What was left was a planet-wide Void, where the remnants of human thought manifest themselves strange islands and creatures. As a projected clone created from a sliver of human DNA, you are tasked with venturing out into that Void and reclaiming the souls of humanity that are now trapped in hidden matryoshka dolls. You’ll explore the Void, find the lost humans, collect resources to expand and upgrade your town, and defend it from the walking nightmares called Izverg. Are you still with me? Keep up! This is just the tip of the genre mash-up that is The Tomorrow Children! We know lots of folks, myself included, would probably be able to wrap their heads around it a little better if there was a handy video. Well you’re in luck because we just so happen to have one! We’ve put together a primer for you with commentary by Q-Games head honcho and veteran game programmer and director Dylan Cuthbert for the TLDR folks. For those of you who want a deeper look, I’ll explain some of the pillars of the game in detail below. A Clone’s Closet When heading out into the Void, players can choose to outfit their characters in different uniforms that cater to whichever role they want to fill. There are five uniforms in The Tomorrow Children: Citizen, Engineer Commander, Miner, Radio Officer, and Combatant. While every citizen can perform the same actions, each uniform has different merits and demerits. For example, just for the alpha test, the Miner starts with a Pick Axe, while the Combatant gets a shotgun. There are many other abilities such as increasing your bag’s capacity or the player’s running speed. The final game will give players even more freedom to shape themselves into the productive members of society they long to be! Defending Your Town! As I mentioned before, collecting humanity’s lost souls is your main mission in The Tomorrow Children. Each matryoshka doll you find in the Void can be brought to town and then resurrected to increase your town population. Your new citizens are fragile and disoriented, so you have to defend them from the dangers of the Void, the Izverg. You have lots of different ways to defend your town in The Tomorrow Children. Basic defenses include shotguns and rocket launchers that you can purchase. As your town becomes more populous and upgrades up, you’ll open new avenues to defend it, like manned artillery turrets and mobile hover tanks. These are just a few of the options we’ve shown in the alpha and there are more planned for launch. Unite for Glory! To survive in the harsh Void, you’ll have to work with your fellow citizens! The Tomorrow Children uses a unique asynchronous multiplayer system in which players exist in the town, but only appear in your world when they’ve interacted with something in theirs. As projected clones, you only appear to all when you’ve physically changed the world. This creates a unique “connected but disconnected” feeling that makes The Tomorrow Children feel even more otherworldly. It also makes working together more challenging, as you’ll have to pay attention to the needs of the town to understand what your role should be at any given moment. Alpha Test Imagineering! Making each town “Your Town” is one of the most exciting things about The Tomorrow Children. We were excited to see everything that the players created in the alpha with only the small sample of the tools that were available for the test. I think the video speaks volumes about the crazy stuff people created, so give it a look! Daily Void News As I said before, we got mountains of data from the alpha test. We’ve taken a pickaxe and shovel to it and mined some of the most interesting facts for a handy infographic, seen at the top of this post! There are a few things that stand out: The most popular class was the Engineer Commander, followed closely by the Miner and Citizen. Surprisingly, the Combatant was the least favorite of our fellow comrades. Pickaxes over Shotguns, I guess! There were over 396,000 resources collected over the two weeks! Dems a lot of apples! The battle between the Izverg and Projected Clones was heated! Over 36,000 Izverg were toppled, but the Clones suffered equally with around 28,000 deaths. Luckily, fellow Citizens were there to pick us up with 12,000 resurrections! Players were all about the speed, as the mayoral candidate who promised faster vehicles was elected 1049 times during the test! Whew! I’m sure that was a lot to take in, but we’ve just scratched the surface of The Tomorrow Children. We’ll be back with more blogs as we get closer to launch. We’ll leave you with a little holiday cheer from everyone here at Q-Games! View the full article
  17. Hi, I’m Mike Bithell and I’m the chap in charge of Volume, a Robin Hood inspired stealth game for PS4 and Vita, due next year. Me and the team wanted to drop into Playstation.Blog and give you our own festive message. We decided to spend a few hours more in the office before running off for presents and chocolate to have a bit of friendly competition. You see, Volume (The game I’ll be repeating the name of a fair few times, so as to market to you effectively, it’s what Christmas is all about.) is all about user-generated content. Along with all the levels we’re making, you’ll be able to play maps created by your friends, while combating the evil Guy Gisborne (played by Andy Serkis). I set the team a challenge: show just how awesome our tools are by making some slightly cheesy Christmas levels for the Playstation.Blog crowd. I didn’t tell them that I would be judging them, and crowning a winner for your entertainment. Every level here, as with all levels in the final game, was made in the exact tools you’ll be getting when the game launches next year! Level Name: Ho Ho Oh dear! Creator: Andrew Roper Day Job on Volume: Server Coder The first of the levels in the “maps shaped like Christmas” genre that quickly emerged. The player gets to mess around in an open and shadowy space (the face and beard) before going into the more confined hat area for some clever avoidance and wall play. This level uses teleporters to join up separate areas and make for a compact, but well paced environment. There’s even a blackjack in the bobble on Santa’s hat, which allows for a fun run back to the exit, knocking out guards as you go (but only for a few seconds, you’ll need to be quick). Gameplay – 2/5 – fun gameplay, but slightly ambiguous puzzles in places. Art: 4/5 – It’s a pretty good likeness, and the teleporter eyes are cool. Story – 0/5 – There isn’t any, as far as I can tell. Christmassyness – 5/5 – Hard to imagine this feeling more festive Overall – 11/20 – A solid level Level Name: North Pole Creator: Hamish Lockwood Day Job on Volume: Level Designer This is a fun level. The player is spawned uncovering weird, creepy toy collections. They’re unclear of where they are, or what’s going on, but start pocketing goods as they find them. Of course, it’s all a fiendish plot from Gisborne, who successfully tricks them into robbing from Santa himself, thus spoiling Christmas! This sequence of puzzle rooms tests the player’s skills nicely, and some fun text triggers give good story context. If we were making a game this silly, we’d put the map in as is. Instead, we’ll likely tweak this one with new story context. Gameplay – 4/5 – This is a fun level, with some clever bugle action for the player to get into as they progress. Some ambiguities keep it just off that perfect 5. Art – 2/5 – This could stand to be a bit prettier… prop work is a bit light, and I’m not sure the colors sing quite as well as they could. Story – 4/5 – A fun level which starts as a heist on a weird Toy collecting character, but a last minute twist let’s us know it’s another one of Gisborne’s tricks. I enjoyed that. Christmassyness – 5/5 – While Roper’s level showed us Santa’s face, this level showed us his entire operation, this feels like the most “Volume” Christmas level made in the competition. Overall – 15/20 – This one does well across the board. A little more art love, and this could be a great level. Level Name: Tree Creator: Hamish Lockwood Day Job on Volume: Level Designer Tree is a great, minimalist level. Simple shape, but really tightly woven challenge. The lack of gadgets forces the player to rely on their wits, and whistling, to get the gems and exit the level. This is the stuff Hamish excels at, and has done a great job of in the main game. Stripped down, back to basics Volume gameplay. The kind of level I love to play. Gameplay -5/5 – Really solid gameplay which requires some awesome, pure stealth from the player. Art – 3/5 – An impressive tree, and the green / red color scheme is nice and bright. Story – 0/5 – Another “no story” level here. Christmassyness – 4/5 – A pretty impressive tree, but I’d have needed some tinsel to give this one the full 5 points. Overall – 12/20 – Great level design (unsurprising, given Hamish’s job on the game) but a lack of story, and of a Santa, hold this one back from greatness. Level Name: Nakatomi Plaza Creator: Sam Robinson Day Job on Volume: Level Designer Sam’s a smart guy, and here he is pandering directly to my tastes. I love me some Die Hard, and this level is just a massive celebration of it. It certainly works, with some notable scenes. Where it gets particularly interesting is in its layout. This level does a great job of looking impossible, right up until the moment where you figure out one specific thread to pull (in this case, flushing a toilet to distract an enemy across the map) to bring a watertight security setup tumbling down. Grabbing a figment gadget to misdirect enemies as you return to the exit provides for an empowering end to the level. Gameplay – 5/5 – tense difficulty and a fun toilet maneuver lead up to a fun blackjack run. This one’s going in the game. Art – 4/5 – Great prop use. I’d want to take a pass at a bit more saturation, but this level looks great. Story – 3/5 – This level is full of references to one of my top ten movies of all time. Pandering? Yes. Copyright Infringing? Absolutely. Christmassyness – 4/5 – It doesn’t get a lot more Christmassy than Die Hard jokes. A winner. Overall – 16/20 – Solid, solid level. It’s going in the game. Level Name: Winning Christmas Creator: Kerry Dyer Day Job on Volume: Planning and Logistics Kerry, who (as well as being the love of my life) handles the nuts and bolts of keeping everyone on the project moving, asked to dive in and produce a level. This was her first time using our, or anybody else’s, level editor. She did an awesome job. A fun puzzle, a quirky story about a kid aiming to outdo everyone else with their present giving, and some fun, tight use of the Bugle gadget. I was so impressed, I’ve set Kerry going on a bunch of other levels for the game. Gameplay – 2/5 – really fun, with some great loop backs, thanks to the level shape. Art – 2/5 – Bright, vivid colors, and a house floor plan that makes sense thanks to good prop choices. I’d like to see some more interesting floor / wall breaks, but other than that, cool. Story – 3/5 – A child aims to beat their family to the punch with better presents, by checking what they’ve received. Festive and fun. Christmassyness – 4/5 – A level about a family home at Christmas, and it’s in the shape of a present? Metachristmas. Overall – 11/20 – Cool work, from a first time designer no less. She’s now making levels for the full game. So, there it is, Die Hard fanboying wins the day. You’ll be able to play these levels when the game launches, along with the 100 core levels we’re already working on. This time next year, we’ll run the competition again, hopefully you’ll join us! Thanks, and Merry Christmas. View the full article

  20. Go vote for the best games of 2014! Feel free to share your picks in the comments — I’ll do the same. A few highlights that didn’t quite make the top ten this week: Sid went hands-on with Evolve’s terrifyingly graceful new monster, the Wraith, Square Enix revealed a lust-worthy Collector’s Edition for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, Supergiant and Roll7 (two of my favorite studios!) stopped by to wish everyone a happy holiday, and Road Not Taken got a new update that a) you can download for free and adds a bunch of new stuff. I’m back on the Destiny grind since The Dark Below came out — see you in the Iron Banner? I also finally got around to checking out the first episode of Tales From the Borderlands. I already regret one of the decisions I made, but I will not go back and replay it. I will stand by my choices! I’m this close to logging back into Final Fantasy XIV after all the Heavensward announcements they just made at Tokyo Fan Fest (three new jobs, Alexander raid dungeon, new playable race), but once I do I fear I may not be able to log out. Maybe I’ll try the new Destiny raid one more time… What are you playing? 22. As 2014 winds down and we look toward the new year, we wanted to take a moment to wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season from all of us at Supergiant. We shall do so now in the universal language of wallpaper JPEGs! It’s been a big year for us, and we’re very grateful for the incredible enthusiasm we’ve received from our fans. From the moment we revealed Transistor, you’ve been incredibly supportive, and that enthusiasm makes a huge difference during development. Even now, months after the game’s launch back in May, we still get wonderful messages from you about your experiences with the game — from all over the world. Having launched Transistor, we’re now in that relatively quiet period where we’re putting our heads together figuring out what’s next. We’re keeping busy in the mean time! Just this month we announced Bastion’s coming to PlayStation 4 and Vita, and Transistor for PS4 will soon be available on PSN in Japan, come January 8. Plus, we just moved to a new space in San Francisco that’s a better fit for us (and besides, our old lease was up). The change of scenery marks a fresh start for whatever comes next, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted. Thanks for sticking with us in 2014, and see you next year! View the full article

  25. When it comes to video game development, it’s a rare miracle when your team has a week in which everything goes right — but that’s exactly what happened for us when we brought Rocket League to PlayStation Experience earlier this month. It was a fantastic show and one that we were definitely honored to be a part of, but to be honest, we weren’t sure what to expect. After all, we’ve been developing Rocket League with longtime Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars fans in mind; so how “new” players would take to it was a bit of a mystery until we put the game into their hands. Luckily, they loved it. The sheer amount of positive feedback we received for Rocket League was both encouraging and humbling. Watching new and returning Battle-Cars fans pick up the controls and dive into their first game with ease, while flashing massive smiles, was “our new best moment of the show” every time it happened — and it happened a lot! When all was said and done, though, these were the Top Five things we took away from our time at PlayStation Experience: 1.) We didn’t make enough shirts. The demand for Rocket League t-shirts was enormous. Most folks wanted to buy them off of us, but were happy to learn that they could win one by being the MVP in one of our four-player split-screen matches. Even so, we were out of every shirt in every size and every color by the start of Day Two. We’ll remember to print more for next time… 2.) Customization is a big deal. Though we weren’t showing anything specific at PlayStation Experience, Rocket League’s customization options came up a lot — pretty much in every game that was played. The bad news was that we couldn’t talk about it yet, but the good news was that it took every fiber of our being to not talk about it. We have big plans for this, more than 100+ customization items and a ton of really cool items that should have people talking once we get into it next year. 3.) Four-player splitscreen is an even bigger deal. “Games just don’t have this anymore” was a comment we heard on numerous occasions, “My son and I are going to play the heck out of this” was another. Quotes like these permeated our booth for the entirety of PlayStation Experience. We were extremely encouraged to see other people get excited at the prospect of playing our game with their friends and loved ones. It struck a chord with us on several levels, both nostalgically and creatively, and it’s hard to put into words just how much it meant to us to see so much happiness surrounding our game. 4.) Players want control options and we’re going to give it to them. Despite the high level of praise we received about how the game felt, we also got a lot of feedback regarding the control scheme and how players had a personal preference to see it another way. Because Rocket League is the sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, we’ve left the control scheme almost identical to what we had in the original, but we also recognize (especially after the show) that folks want options — and that’s why we are now making sure to include multiple control schemes for gamers of every variety in the final version. 5.) We need to add more player events, and so we will. In Rocket League, we award individual points for playing well: Blocking a Shot, Attempting a Shot, Scoring a Goal, Setting up an Assist, etc. On the show floor, we saw an impressive amount of creative and impromptu maneuvers that felt like they needed special call-outs and points awards. Using an opponent’s car to hit the ball into the goal billiards-style, for example, made for awesome, yell-out-loud moments. Watching players score goals while in reverse was just as amazing. And so, as a result of seeing all these fantastic plays, we’re going to bolster our existing roster of player events to encourage folks to try as many crazy things as possible. And that sums up our entire PlayStation Experience. We hope that for those of you who were in attendance had as much fun playing our game as we had watching you. We look forward to bringing Rocket League to even more players worldwide when we launch this coming spring. On behalf of the entire Psyonix team, thank you very much. View the full article
